Dear Families and Friends,
The strength of our community is found in our shared connections. When we come together, we create meaningful new outcomes that improve lives and create lasting change.
From our December meeting with Acting Commissioner Willow Baer to assisting neighbors facing food insecurity during our annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service, the impact our connections make is evident and there are many wonderful opportunities to get involved.
Over the next few weeks, I urge you to take a moment to visit www.ahrc.org/advocate and use our one-click email tool to share your perspective on federal and state issues with your elected officials. Doing so, you not only show your support, you highlight the needs within their respective districts. You may also want to sign up for a volunteer opportunity at www.ahrc.org/volunteer. Whether you’re interested in lending a helping hand once or on an ongoing basis, we have opportunities to match your interests.
Thank you for being a part of our community. Your involvement is critical as we work to advance a shared vision of a world where people of all abilities are valued.
Best regards,
Stanfort J. Perry CEO, AHRC Nassau
On the morning of December 11, AHRC Nassau, Citizens Options Unlimited, and Brookville Center for Children’s Services had the joint honor of welcoming Willow Baer, Acting Commissioner of New York State’s Office for People With Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD), and her colleagues to the Brookville campus.
The visit offered a valuable opportunity for self-advocates, parents, siblings, and team members to engage in meaningful discussions about the key priorities, current supports, and future services for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD).
The conversations highlighted shared goals, including how providers and OPWDD can work together to address pressing challenges and meet the evolving needs of the I/DD community. The topics included the need for and growth of self-directed services, DSP shortages/compensation and residential selection through the Certified Residential Opportunities (CRO) list.
Following the discussions, Acting Commissioner Baer and her team toured the Thomas S. Gulotta Wheatley Farms & Arts Center, AHRC Nassau’s recent initiative advancing employment and education.
“It was a morning of collaboration and shared learning,” said Stanfort J. Perry, CEO. “We deeply value the opportunity to connect and discuss the priorities OPWDD is addressing, the challenges faced by providers, and how we can work together to create new outcomes.”
The visit underscored the agencies’ commitment to advocacy and partnerships that prioritize people with I/DD and the staff providing essential care and services.
It was a day on, not off. The AHRC Nassau community took action, honoring the legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. alongside neighbors in the City of Glen Cove and Glen Cove City School District’s 41st Annual MLK Commemorative Commission Program and Motorcade. Michelle Rudoff, Quality Assurance Trainer, delivered a powerful and inspiring speech emphasizing the vital role of inclusion. Volunteers also rallied to collect food donations for NOSH! Delivers pantry, embodying Dr. King’s spirit of community service . Leaders, including Assemblyman Charles Lavine, Glen Cove Mayor Pam Panzenbeck, County Legislator Delia DeRiggi-Whitton, and Glen Cove Town Council members, came together with our community to celebrate and strengthen our shared commitment to service.
On Sunday, Dec. 8, AHRC Nassau’s Board of Directors reaffirmed their commitment to the agency during the annual Dansant at the Brookville mansion.
We are grateful to AHRC Nassau’s board members for another year of service ensuring meaningful opportunities and advocacy for people with developmental disabilities.

The spirit of giving and community-building made the 2025 holiday season especially memorable. Together, people supported, agency staff and volunteers created moments of joy and connection during meaningful traditions, festive events, and activities that celebrated the warmth of the season.
“With the rising cost of living on Long Island, the kindness and generosity of volunteers made sure the holiday spirit shone brightly for families in need,” said Jerri Walker, Volunteer and Project Coordinator. “I cannot say thank you enough to everyone in our community who gave this holiday season — and contributes to the extraordinary community spirit that shines year-round.”
For more than two decades, the GrecoMunz family —led by Marie and Eric Greco, and their daughter Tina Munz— has been making Christmas wishes come true for AHRC families in need during the holiday season. This heartfelt tradition began long before Tina’s son, Michael Munz, was born but it’s a tradition he has grown up witnessing and now plays a role in continuing. Each year, the family adopts several families and spends many weekends and online hours shopping for gifts, wrapping them, and delivering everything to AHRC Nassau in Plainview so that presents are under the tree in time for Christmas.
This year, Michael, now 17 and a junior at Chaminade High School, used money he saved from his summer job to purchase a bicycle—one of the most wished-for gifts.
“Growing up, my parents instilled the importance of giving back and helping others when we can,” shared Tina. “It’s really wonderful to see my son learning those same values and finding joy in making someone else’s holiday special.”
Thank you to the Greco-Munz family for continuing to spread kindness, warmth, and the true spirit of the season, year after year!
Another meaningful giving tradition centered on the holiday tree in the heart of the Brookville mansion. Decorated with ornaments highlighting gift requests for families in need, AHRC staff and community volunteers exchanged ornaments for gifts, ranging from articles of clothing to electronics and toys. All requests help families caring for a family member with a developmental disability living at home who struggle during the holidays.
To celebrate the season, over 100 people supported by AHRC Nassau Residential Services, staff and friends gathered at The Sterling in Bethpage to dance, share a meal, and make memories. Santa stopped by to join the festivities, take photos, and dance the night away.
Also, people supported by AHRC Day Services enjoyed holiday activities that included learning about different December celebrations like Kwanzaa and taking trips to see holiday shows. Thanks to a recreational grant from NYSARC Trust Services, special performances attended included The Happy Elf at the Argyle Theater and Christmas House at the Broadway Mall. These occasions supported people to explore their community and develop their social skills.
Day Services team members also capped off the year with a festive agency-wide spirit week featuring fun themed dress-up days like Holiday Hat Day and Ugly Christmas Sweater Day.
The season of giving extended to Americana Manhasset’s Champions for Charity™ 2024 shopping event. Thank you to all the holiday shoppers who kept us in mind while making your purchases. As a benefactor, 25% of your full-priced, pre-tax transaction went directly to our organization. This donation goes toward enhancing services and supports for people with developmental disabilities supported by AHRC Nassau.
A winter wonderland filled with inclusive activities awaited over 120 registered attendees on December 5 during the agency’s first Frost and Farm Fest held at the Wheatley Farms & Arts Center in Brookville.
Bringing the magic of winter and warmth of the holiday season to life, the event offered opportunities for festive and family-friendly fun.
“We are so excited to see the event was a sweet success that brought together people of differing abilities to mingle and have fun in the wintertime,” said Bridget Cariello, Assistant Director of Project Development.
A highlight of the event was a winter hay-bale decorating contest, weeks in the making, which showcased 20 creative and holiday-themed entries submitted by families, friends, employees, and people supported by our family of organizations. Judged by an independent panel, winning displays included “Holiday Village” by JNB Stars Day Options and “Frosty’s Snow Globe” by Amy Yan Yeung, Day Services Activity Specialist. See the entries at www.ahrc.org/blog!
The evening was filled with laughter and games lit by torchlight, ranging from ice bowling to a snowman toss. While visitors enjoyed hot cocoa and cookies from Wheatley Farms Catering, musical performances
of holiday favorites including “Holy Jolly Christmas” were heard on flute and violin from Syosset and Jericho High School students.
Patrick Sherrard, Assistant Director of Day Habilitation Services, also shared the spotlight by singing popular songs like “Jingle Bells” and “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town.”
Indoors, attendees had the option to create snowman crafts with self-advocate and agency volunteer Coleen Mackin, get their faces painted, or take snapshots with Santa Claus.
Parents and their children saw Caspian the Pig from the large windows in the Wheatley Farms clubhouse and learned about the different animals who live on the property from Farm Manager Allison Glass.
Holiday shopping was also available, with Big Tree Greenhouse & Gifts present for people to purchase wreaths and holiday gnomes.
Culminating the event was a tractor lighting, topped with an inflatable cow, Bessie, displaying the Frost and Farm Fest banner to highlight the farm theme. The event was an incredibly fun time for family and friends to come together and celebrate the season.
At the Oct. 16 Rights Rally in Brookville, over a hundred people supported by AHRC Day Services celebrated self-advocacy and self-discovery through presentations and activities exploring their interests and aspirations. Organized jointly by the Personal Outcome Measures (POMs) and Quality Assurance (QA) teams, this year’s rights rally focused on understanding one’s role in society. Self-advocate and QA Trainer Michelle Rudoff, Compass and QA Administrator Colleen Tapia and Personal Outcomes Department Coordinator Susan “Sue” Gil Orange led the presentation.
The trip to Celebrations in the Kitchen, a venue offering live baking events, was a sweet treat for the ladies and gentlemen in Day Services. During their session, they learned to bake cookies from scratch, packed their freshly made creations to take home, and finished off by having pizza for lunch. This experience was made possible through a generous grant from NYSARC Trust Services supporting recreational opportunities to enrich the lives of men and women supported by AHRC Nassau.
The men and women in Day Services took on the thoughtful project of working with the City of Long Beach to do beach cleanups. Back at their Day Services location, they break out their crafting materials and decorate the shells they found. Their creativity shines through as they transform the shells into beautiful works of art, showcasing both their talent and commitment to the community.
AHRC Nassau hosted the 2024 Annual Membership Meeting on Dec. 18 at the Brookville mansion and online. This special evening was a time for the membership to connect on agency milestones, the election of officers, and AHRC’s 75 years of advocacy, inclusion, and community impact through the “Fulfilling the Promise” Awards.
Congratulations to the Heart of the Community Award Recipients
DEI Liaison and community volunteer Noah Probert, remarkable Direct Support Professional Lordlyn Lewis, and outstanding Assistant Manager Althea Mowatt.
Three Cheers for Outstanding Volunteer Award Honoree Brian Quinn who shares his creativity and passion for art through weekly classes, and Youth Leadership Award recipient Emma Kurian for her dedication, kindness, and leadership over the past two years. Emma was unable to attend the meeting and was presented with the award at her volunteer assignment at AHRC’s bowling league.
