Buying and Selling a Hair Restoration Business

Are you considering selling your business? Identifying potential buyers and understanding their motivations are crucial steps. Are you selling an established business or a small, owner-dependent operation?

If you own a hair restoration studio, it is essential to have a well-defined strategic plan. Evaluate whether you have a workable business model, qualified staff, and stable financials.

Motivations for selling your business may include retirement, inability to continue operations, or the need to liquidate assets. A business should demonstrate profitability, accurate financial records, operational systems, and positive cash flow to attract investors. If not yet fully developed, potential buyers might be interested in continuing your legacy due to personal admiration or entrepreneurial aspirations.

The decision to sell a business is always challenging. Questions about the optimal time to sell, marketing strategies, and pricing need careful consideration. The primary question is whether you are selling

a fully operational business or owner-dependent operation. A genuine business operates independently of its owner, generating income and maintaining structure without constant personal involvement. On the other hand, owner-dependent operations typically rely heavily on the owner's presence for its viability.

A well-established business should generate income autonomously, with systems and personnel ensuring continued operation in the owner’s absence. Business assets should be held under the business name and supported by a comprehensive business plan, clear goals, initiatives, and metrics for success. Once these aspects are established, identifying potential buyers becomes the next step.

A profitable business can appeal to entrepreneurs due to its existing operational model. While the transitions may require some guidance, a well-structured business attracts individuals who see potential for improvement. If you own an owner-dependent operation, it is necessary to find someone willing to learn and maintain your system or potentially evolve

it into a more autonomous enterprise.

Prospective buyers should also consider their fit for ownership. Are you selfmotivated and capable of driving business growth? How well do you manage time, employees, inventory, client demands, and conflict resolution?

When evaluating the purchase of a hair restoration business, assess if your strengths align with the demands of ownership. Business-minded individuals will bring strategic planning, financial oversight, and operational management skills, positioning them to streamline systems and ensure long-term profitability and growth.

Conversely, if your passion lies in the artistry and service of hair restoration, connecting with clients and keeping hands-on involvement can guide you to enhance the studio's personal touch. While business acumen remains essential, a passion for the craft drives individuals to preserve the essence and culture of the salon.

Ultimately, balancing sharp business skills with a deep-rooted passion for hair restoration is key. Aligning your vision with the business's current structure will help determine whether the goal is to maintain a legacy or transform the operation into a scalable, independent enterprise.

BREAKING THE STIGMA

How Impact Hair Studio Is Redefining Hair Replacement Services in Society

For decades, hair loss has been a silent struggle for millions of men and women. Often hidden under hats, wigs, or quiet avoidance of mirrors, it has carried unnecessary stigma and emotional weight. But in today’s world, that’s changing — and at the forefront of this movement is Celso Enrique Rivera, an international educator, master trainer in Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), and Director of Education for Hairskeen USA.

As co-founder of Impact Hair Studio in Bedford, Massachusetts, Celso is on a mission to make hair replacement services as normal, accessible, and celebrated as any other beauty or grooming treatment. “When you get your hair cut, colored, or styled, you’re enhancing your appearance — hair replacement is no different. It’s simply another service designed to help you look and feel your best,” says Celso.

An Open Concept for an Open Conversation

Impact Hair Studio was built on the idea of transparency — both in its design and in its purpose. The open-concept layout is intentionally welcoming, creating a space where clients feel part of a community rather than isolated in a back room. This setting fosters conversation, curiosity, and most importantly, normalization of hair

replacement as a mainstream service.

By removing the secrecy, Celso and his team have helped shift perceptions. The salon has become a hub for transformation, not just of appearance but of self-image. He emphasizes that “The more we see it, the more we talk about it, the more we accept it".

Turning Insecurity Into Inspiration

One of Celso’s most impactful strategies for helping clients who feel nervous or insecure about the process is something he calls a “confidence crossover.” He will intentionally schedule an appointment so that a new client’s visit overlaps with that of a returning client who has already gone through the journey — someone who has embraced and welcomed their new version of themselves.

The result is powerful. The new client gets to witness, in real time, someone wearing their hair system naturally, engaging confidently, and sharing their own story of transformation. These organic interactions often dissolve fear and hesitation far more effectively than any sales pitch could. Celso says, “When you see living proof in front of you — someone just like you, thriving — it becomes easier to imagine it for yourself."

A Unique Integration

Celso’s approach goes beyond offering world-class hair replacement systems. As Lead Educator he travels nationwide teaching barbers and hairstylists how to integrate these services into their own businesses. His training blends the artistry of modern hair systems with the communication, consultation, and mindset tools of NLP coaching — equipping beauty professionals with both the technical skill and emotional intelligence needed to serve clients with empathy and confidence.

This integration has created a ripple effect in the beauty industry. Professionals who train under Celso not only learn cuttingedge techniques, but they also discover how to build trust, overcome client hesitations, and create a safe space for transformation.

A Mission That’s Bigger Than Hair

Celso’s vision is clear: to help dismantle outdated beliefs about hair loss and hair replacement, and to inspire an industrywide embrace of this life-changing service. Through Impact Hair Studio’s open concept, his collaboration with us, and his deep commitment to professional coaching, he’s proving that beauty is not just about appearance — it’s about empowerment, acceptance, and freedom of choice.

“As more people see this service as a natural part of self-care, we’re not just restoring hair. We’re restoring the way people see themselves."

Five Easy Tips to Get Started on Social Media

The time, attention, and money reserved for marketing always shifts to where the people are. Undeniably, people are on social media platforms. According to Sprout Social, there are an estimated 5.42 billion total social media users worldwide, and the average person uses 6.83 different social networks each month. A whopping 90% of consumers rely on social media to keep up with trends and cultural moments. For all of those billions of users, what brings people together – even in a digital space – is wanting to participate in shared trends and culture. Social media is really all about finding your people, and from a business perspective, it’s about conveying value to those people in an authentic way.

While posting on social media feels natural for some, it can feel a little awkward for others. But don’t fret – it’s not that hard to get started.

Here are five tips to try at the beginning of your social journey.

1. Choose the right platforms for you

Facebook. Instagram. TikTok. YouTube. Tumblr. Pinterest. Threads. There are a LOT of different social platforms. Each of them brings their own unique userbase and culture. How could you ever know which one is right for you? Think about the people whom you want to follow your business on social media. What do you know about them? Which social media platforms do they use? It’s also important to consider

what the strengths of any given platform are. Instagram is great for any visual media, while YouTube sticks to video. LinkedIn is better for conveying your business as a thought leader in your industry, and Snapchat is perfect for showing an average day in your life. By considering where your target market is online and weighing the pros and cons of each of those platforms, you’ll be able to find the right home for your business.

2. Post regularly

Keeping your page active with a few posts each week provides a variety of benefits. From a user’s point of view, no one likes to follow a dead page where the last post was from two Decembers ago. From a platform point of view: if your account is actively posting, it is infinitely more likely to appear in users’ feeds as they scroll. You might be thinking, “what could I possibly have to post that could

be interesting multiple times every week?” It’s okay to mix it up: maybe a nice photo of the sunrise reflecting off the building’s façade. Perhaps a product is back in stock. What if there’s a client success story to tell, or a funny anecdote from a beloved staff member? Anything that helps create an authentic connection between your brand and your customers should be what you consider.

3. Make sure your profile photo is appropriately-sized, especially if it’s a logo

I’ve got to admit, I’ve seen this happen so many times over the years - WAY too many! If you want your logo (whether as a standalone file or as a picture of a sign) to be your profile photo, take an extra second to make sure it looks good before hitting “save”. Typically, the entire logo should be visible, unimpeded. If it doesn’t look great the first time around, no worries: if you’re uploading this image from a phone, just drag the corners of the image before you save it to resize for maximum effect.

4. Little interactions can go a long way

Creating your own posts is the minimum. It’s fine, but what can help even more? Interacting with your users. If there’s a comment on a post that makes you smile, give it a ‘like’ or reply with a kind message of your own! Maybe someone tags your business in a different post saying how pleased they were with their experience. That’s a perfect opportunity to show just how great your customer service is! If someone has a negative experience, keeping an eye on social media can potentially also help to make a problem right.

5. Don’t forget to use your business'

contact info

The business name, address, phone number, website, and any other relevant contact info should be easily visible. Take full advantage of the bio or about sections in your social platform of choice!

Bonus tip: Links don’t work in Instagram feed posts!

While links in IG Stories can be clickable, users are not given an option to click links in feed posts. It’s always good to have either a link to your website or a link landing page, like Linktree, in your bio to direct your followers if necessary.

Social communities are built gradually, little by little, as they grow and change. When starting your social media journey, it’s important to practice doing the basics. You’ll get better at it with practice, and who knows where this journey could take you!

More Than Hair

A Cancer Survivor’s Story of Healing and NonSurgical Hair Restoration

Cancer leaves its mark in many ways. For survivors, the battle doesn’t always end when treatments or surgeries are complete. Beyond the physical toll, the visible changes — hair loss, thinning, or surgical scarring — often serve as daily reminders of what they’ve endured. While these changes may seem cosmetic, they can deeply affect identity, confidence, and emotional recovery. As professionals in the hair loss industry, we know that our work is about more than providing hair. It’s about restoring dignity, normalcy, and the sense of self that illness can strip away. One client’s story illustrates why our profession matters so deeply.

One Gentleman’s Story

Recently, we worked with an older gentleman who had undergone surgery to remove a cranial tumor. The procedure saved his

life, but it left behind significant scarring and an area of permanent hair loss. While he was grateful for his recovery, he shared that living with the visible scar was emotionally exhausting. He explained that social settings became uncomfortable — whether with family, friends, or strangers. Even the mirror became a source of pain, reflecting back not only his scar but also the emotional weight of his cancer journey. As he told us, “Having the wound exposed to others… embarrassed.” What he wanted wasn’t simply hair; it was relief from the constant reminder of what he had been through.

When he walked into our clinic, we began not with measurements or color swatches, but with listening. We asked about his concerns, what he missed about his appearance, and what outcome would make him feel whole again. Admitting the difficulty of that first step, he recalled feeling “apprehension” walking into the salon for the first time.

The Transformation

Our team designed a fully customized hair replacement solution tailored to his needs. We measured the scarred area with precision, created a base that would fit seamlessly against the scalp, and matched the hair color and texture to blend naturally with his existing hair. Finally, we cut and styled the piece to reflect his age, personality, and natural look. The first time he saw himself in the mirror with his new hair, his entire expression changed. His eyes lit up, and the heaviness he carried seemed to lift. He later shared, “Happy with how realistic it looked with my real hair. Amazed! Made me feel confident.” What surprised him most wasn’t only the outcome, but the care and craftsmanship it took to get there: “How extensive the process was.” When asked if he would recommend

the experience to others, his response was immediate: “Would highly, highly recommend it.” For him, this wasn’t just about looking different. It was about walking into a room without fear of judgment, smiling in family photos without hesitation, and moving through life without a constant reminder of illness. His transformation was emotional, not just physical.

Lessons for Professionals

Stories like his remind us of the responsibility and privilege we carry as salon and clinic owners. The technical side of our work — achieving a flawless fit, blending colors, and mastering styling — is vital. But the heart of what we do lies in compassion. Every consultation should be approached as more than a service. Listening carefully to a client’s fears and hopes is just as important as measuring a scalp or cutting a template. Clients who come to us after cancer are often carrying more than just hair loss; they’re carrying grief, trauma, and the desire to feel normal again.

Customization matters, too. A well-designed, natural-looking piece can be the difference between someone feeling like they’re wearing a cover-up versus reclaiming their identity. Precision and artistry work hand-in-hand with empathy to deliver results that change lives. Just as important is sharing our experiences as professionals. By exchanging stories, techniques, and challenges within the hair loss industry, we can better serve clients who need us most. Collaboration helps raise the standard of care for all survivors seeking solutions.

Why Our Work Matters

Hair replacement is not simply about restoring appearance — it’s about restoring confidence and dignity. For cancer survivors especially, it can be the final step in healing, the bridge between surviving and thriving. Each client who sits in our chair represents more than a technical challenge. They represent a chance to give back a part of themselves that illness tried to take away. And when we succeed, the reward is profound: seeing someone recognize themselves again, smile again, and live again without hesitation. As members of the American Hair Loss Council and the broader professional community, let us never forget the significance of our craft. We are not just providing hair. We are offering healing, hope, and the possibility of a renewed self-image. That is why our work matters — because for survivors, it is always more than hair.

Reinvention at Any Age My Journey from Stylist to Hair Replacement Specialist

Reinvention doesn’t always come with fireworks. Sometimes, it sneaks in as a quiet nudge — a shift in perspective, a client conversation, or even a chance observation in the salon chair. Other times, it arrives as a loud, undeniable call that you can’t ignore.

chapter has required courage, curiosity, and the willingness to begin again

If you’re reading this and wondering whether it’s too late to change directions, let me assure you—it isn’t. In fact, some of the most rewarding seasons of life come after we’ve already invested years into our craft. Experience doesn’t weigh you down; it equips you.

L’Oréal Professionnel, and alongside industry legends like Vivienne Mackinder, Charlie Price, and Danilo Dixon.

Those years were exhilarating. I loved the lights, the energy, the collaboration. But they also shaped me into an educator at heart. I discovered that my real passion wasn’t just about creating beauty — it was about sharing knowledge and helping others grow.

I’ve been in the hair industry for 37 years, and over those decades, I’ve learned that reinvention is not a single event. It’s a way of life. I’ve stepped into new roles and new versions of myself many times: competitor, educator, salon owner, trichologist, and now, a hair replacement specialist. Each

From the Stage to the Salon

In my early years, I thrived in the competitive and educational side of hairstyling. I was aiming to be part of the Hair Olympic Team, pushing my skills to the highest level of artistry. Later, I traveled the world as a platform artist, working with Matrix Essentials,

The Heart of Reinvention

I often tell clients and colleagues that reinvention is not about becoming someone new. It’s about becoming more fully who you are meant to be. Every season of my life — every pivot, every challenge — has led me here.

At nearly four decades in the beauty industry, I can say with certainty that this chapter is my favorite. Helping women reclaim confidence through hair replacement is the most rewarding work I’ve ever done.

So if you find yourself standing at a crossroads, don’t let fear keep you still. Be willing to take that first step. Whether you’ve been in the industry five years or fifty, there is always room for new beginnings.

The best part of your career — the most fulfilling, the most meaningful — might be waiting in the chapter you haven’t yet written.

Eventually, my path led me away from the stage and into the salon. In Miami, I opened one of the first organic salons in the area. At the time, “green beauty” was new, and clients were searching for healthier, more holistic options. It was another reinvention, another leap into something uncharted. And I loved it.

When Curiosity Becomes a Catalyst

The shift into trichology began with three clients. They each developed alopecia areata in the same area of their scalp after using the same no-poo conditioner-wash routine. I remember thinking: What are the chances?

That curiosity became a catalyst. I couldn’t ignore the patterns I was seeing. So, I enrolled in the World Trichology Society and spent four years studying the anatomy and physiology of hair and scalp and disorders. I graduated in 2020 — ironically, the year the world stood still.

It was an unsettling time to launch something new. But in that stillness, I found clarity. I realized that as much as I wanted to help every woman regrow her hair, that wasn’t always possible. That realization could have

felt like failure — but instead, it opened the door to something greater: hair replacement.

When you lean into curiosity, it has the power to change not just your career, but your life.

Discovering Hair Replacement and Community

When I began exploring hair replacement, I quickly realized this was the missing link. If trichology gave me the knowledge to understand hair loss, hair replacement gave me the tools to restore confidence, dignity, and beauty.

But what truly transformed my journey wasn’t just the technical training — it was finding community. Reinvention can feel lonely at times, but connecting with the right people makes all the difference. Lisa Ferestad was and continues to be my “911 hair replacement angel,” always available with wisdom and support when I needed it most. Eliana and Mirko offered guidance that grounded me in both skill and perspective. And Martina Candido, who I worked with first through CRLAB and now at the Italian Academy of Hair Microscopy, has been instrumental in helping me grow into advanced levels of analysis and care.

Community has also been at the heart of my membership with the American Hair Loss Council. Attending their HairNow Conferences has given me the chance to meet incredible peers, connect with vendors, and speak directly about the needs we face in this industry. The classes are always inspiring, but the relationships and conversations are what keep me coming back. And of course, I always look forward to The Link Magazine arriving in my mailbox — it feels like a lifeline that keeps us connected, informed, and inspired between conferences.

These connections remind me that reinvention is never done alone. Behind every new chapter are mentors, peers, and friends who lift you up and guide you forward.

Why Reinvention Matters

Malcolm Gladwell writes that it takes 10,000 hours to become an expert. When I look back on my career, I see those hours

Cindy’s Continuing Education Path

Reinvention is powered by learning. These are the key educational steps that shaped my transition from stylist to trichologist and hair replacement specialist:

• World Trichology Society: Formal training in the anatomy and physiology of hair and scalp, building the foundation for trichology practice.

• Advanced Hair Replacement Training: Comprehensive education that included trichology integration, non-surgical hair systems, and scalp treatment protocols.

• Italian Academy of Hair Microscopy: In-depth study of hair follicles and scalp health at a microscopic level, enabling precise analysis and personalized treatment plans.

• American Hair Loss Council: Membership and HairNow Conferences that provide ongoing education, industry updates, networking with peers, direct conversations with vendors, and a chance to share our needs as professionals. Education is never a finish line — it’s the bridge to every new beginning.

stacked up — behind the chair, on the stage, in classrooms, and in private client consultations. Each one was preparing me for this new season.

That’s the beauty of reinvention. You don’t leave your old skills behind — you carry them with you. My years as a master colorist and stylist help me design seamless, natural hair systems. My time as an educator gives me the confidence to guide clients through complex choices. My experience as a salon owner helps me create a space where women feel safe and supported.

Continuing education has also been the cornerstone of every reinvention in my career. After completing my training with the World Trichology Society and pursuing advanced certification in hair replacement, I sought out the Italian Academy of Hair Microscopy to deepen my expertise. Microscopy has given me the ability to study hair follicles and scalp health at an advanced level, uncovering details invisible to the naked eye. For my clients, this means more precise analysis and more personalized solutions. For me, it’s another reminder that no matter how many years you’ve been in the industry, there is always more to learn — and that curiosity is the fuel that drives meaningful reinvention. When you reinvent yourself, you don’t start over. You start forward.

Tips for Transitioning into Hair Replacement Later in Life

• Stay Curious: The best ideas often come from asking “why” or “what if.” Let curiosity guide your next chapter.

• Listen for the Catalyst: Your turning point may come from a client’s story, a new trend, or even a challenge you can’t ignore. Trust that spark.

• Keep Learning: Education is the bridge to reinvention. Whether it’s trichology certification, hair replacement training, advanced microscopy, or AHLC conferences, learning keeps you sharp and relevant.

• Build on What You Already Know: Every season of your career has value. Blend your past skills into your new specialty — it’s what makes you unique.

• Find Your Community: Mentors and peers provide the support you need when challenges arise. Surround yourself with people who want to see you succeed.

• Lean Into Empathy: Hair loss is deeply emotional. Your ability to listen, comfort, and support may be more important than your technical skills.

• Embrace Innovation: Modern hair replacement and scalp treatments are sophisticated and life-changing. Staying open to new tools and protocols will keep your work meaningful and effective.

Heart and Care Supporting Scalp and Hair Health During Chemotherapy and Radiation

For anyone walking through the doors of a cancer clinic, the journey ahead is filled with unknowns. Alongside the physical toll of chemotherapy and radiation comes a deeply personal challenge: hair loss. For many, it’s not just about losing hair — it’s about losing part of their identity, their sense of normalcy, and even their confidence.

Creating a Holistic, Compassionate Environment

A typical chemotherapy or radiation client is already navigating an overwhelming number of medications. The last thing they need is another layer of complexity or stress. That’s why, in our centre, we encourage a holistic environment whenever possible.

Root Cause and Recovery

Our philosophy goes beyond simply addressing the surface symptoms of hair loss. We believe in looking at the root cause and supporting the body’s natural systems in recovery once treatment has ended.

As the owner of Wig Boutique Barrie and Hair Prosthesis Centre — with a background in nursing — I’ve had the privilege of caring for clients through both the medical and personal sides of hair loss. I have walked beside hundreds of clients during this difficult season. My role — and my heart — have always been focused on one guiding principle: care first. Every product recommendation, every fitting, and every conversation begins with that mindset.

This doesn’t mean ignoring the science or turning away from medical treatment — it means creating a supportive space where clients feel safe, heard, and nurtured. Gentle scalp care is at the forefront: non-irritating cleansers; soothing oils or serums for tender scalps; and breathable headwear options that bring comfort in every season.

We’ve dedicated an entire room in our boutique to headwear — soft caps, scarves, turbans, and seasonal options — so clients always have choices that align with both their comfort and their style.

Post-chemo, the body is in a fragile state. Rebuilding takes time, patience, and the right kind of support. That’s why we partner with trusted referral professionals — naturopaths, nutritionists, and medical specialists — who can help clients get the answers and tools they need to truly restore balance.

Regrowth is rarely an overnight process. It requires consistency, encouragement, and realistic expectations. Whether it’s using medical-grade laser caps, nourishing hair and scalp products, or simply reminding clients that new growth will come, we are always focused on building the system back up, not just masking the loss.

Community Connection and Advocacy

My work isn’t limited to the boutique. I

also sit on the board at my local hospital, which gives me the privilege of helping to shape broader conversations around patient care. I bring the voices of my clients into that room, ensuring that the importance of dignity, comfort, and self-confidence in cancer care is never overlooked.

My experience has shown me first hand how transformative it is when clients feel supported not just medically, but emotionally and socially. Teaching women how to tie a scarf, fit a wig, or care for their sensitive scalps is about so much more than aesthetics — it’s about restoring a sense of control and hope.

Walking Every Step Together

At the end of the day, products and procedures are only part of the picture. What matters most is being present. When a client walks into our center, they know they are not just a number or a transaction. They are a person on a journey — and we are committed to being there every step of the way. Sometimes that means helping them pick out their very first head covering. Other

times it means celebrating the first signs of regrowth months after treatment ends. Often, it simply means sitting with them, listening, and reminding them they are not alone.

At our facility, our philosophy is simple: we do everything one at a time. One client, one minute, one conversation, one act of care. This is how we ensure each person feels truly seen, supported, and valued on their path forward. Our goal has never been just about hair. It has always been about heart.

As professionals in this field, we have the unique privilege of walking with clients through some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives. When care comes first, every product, every referral, and every conversation becomes an act of healing.

For anyone navigating chemotherapy or radiation, know this: your journey is valid, your feelings are real, and your story is worth honoring. Hair may be part of the journey, but it is never the whole story — and with the right support, confidence and self-love can bloom again.

Five Tips for Scalp Care During Chemo

1. Keep it gentle: Use mild, fragrance-free cleansers and avoid anything harsh. Your scalp deserves kindness.

2. Soothe & protect: A lightweight, nourishing oil or serum can help calm irritation and dryness.

3. Cover with comfort: Soft, breathable headwear protects against sun, cold, and irritation. Choose fabrics that feel good on sensitive skin.

4. Cool down: Avoid heat styling, hot showers, or direct sun exposure. Your scalp is more delicate now.

5. Take it one day at a time: Regrowth will come. Be patient, gentle, and know you are never alone on this journey.

Growing Up in Hair Replacement: The Heart Behind My Passion

Some children grow up in playgrounds - I grew up in the heart of the hair replacement industry.

My earliest memories aren’t of cartoons, but of hairpieces, color rings, and chignons. While other kids were playing house, I was helping my mother match hair shades and learning without even realizing it about an industry that would become my lifelong calling.

My mother was not just a hairstylist; she was an icon in the world of hair replacement. Over the course of more than 50 years, she dedicated her life to helping men, women, and children restore their confidence through innovative hair loss solutions. Along the way, she designed, invented, and patented several types of hair loss systems that shaped the industry and paved the way for future generations. To me, though, she was simply “Mom” and I had a front-row seat to her brilliance.

Some of my fondest memories are of standing in awe before a wall of chignons, carefully studying each one, holding them up to the light, and picking out colors for my mom to ventilate into hair systems. It felt like a game at the time, but in reality, I was absorbing the intricacies of color matching and system design at an age when most children were still learning multiplication tables.

Of course, being a child in a hair replacement salon had its playful side too. As my mom chatted with stylists and clients, I’d take the clear PVC domes that came inside hair systems and place them over my face, pretending to be a firefighter. While I was playing pretend, I didn’t realize that I was also learning, watching the artistry, compassion, and precision that went into every consultation and system.

This early exposure shaped not just my career path but my entire perspective on what it means to serve others. My mom taught me that hair replacement is not about vanity, it’s about restoring dignity, confidence, and identity. It’s about listening deeply, caring genuinely, and combining artistry with science to create transformations that go far beyond hair.

When I graduated high school, I initially felt the pull to go to college. After two years, and summers spent working alongside my mom, I realized where my true passion lay. I enrolled at the Aveda Institute in Minneapolis where I trained in cosmetology and laid the foundation for my career in hair replacement.

My first job was with International Hairgoods, where I literally counted hairs to understand what 600 looked like for a new, innovative system called Micro Point Links. At just 20 years old, I was given the extraordinary opportunity to travel to Japan to work with Aderans Hairgoods, the parent company, to help customize Micro Point Links for the U.S. market. While there, I also received intensive training on scalp treatments and sales, broadening my understanding of both the clinical and business sides of the industry.

When Micro Point Links was officially introduced in the U.S., I became its primary educator. I traveled extensively, training hundreds of salons across the country on this innovative process of attaching four new hairs to a client’s single hair, an advancement that offered density and volume in a completely non-invasive way. I went on to serve as the primary trainer for all things hair replacement, ensuring salons across the country had the knowledge and confidence to bring these advanced solutions to their clients. My mom and I went on to collaborate together on Micro Point Accents, designing several hair systems and color effects that would become industry staples. My career grew, so did the opportunities.

For 19 years, I had the privilege of traveling across the United States and internationally, working privately as the hair replacement specialist for a well-known celebrity. This experience not only challenged me to perfect my craft at the highest level, but also allowed me to see firsthand how deeply hair impacts identity and

confidence — whether for someone in the spotlight or an everyday guest in my chair.

Now, with 29 years in the industry, I can truly say I’ve lived and breathed every aspect of this business from manufacturing and innovation to hair loss work and client care. After working for a major manufacturer and in three different hair replacement salons, I realized it was time to take everything I had learned from my earliest days as a child at my mother’s side to the vast professional knowledge I gained through decades of hands-on experience and create something of my own. That dream became reality when I opened my own salon: Restore Hair Loss Salon.

Restore was born out of passion and purpose. I wanted to create a space where guests feel comfortable, cared for, and confident again. I know firsthand that hair loss can come from so many different journeys: chemotherapy, alopecia, trichotillomania, hormonal changes, or pattern baldness and that each journey carries its own weight. My role isn’t just about restoring hair; it’s about restoring hope, identity, and a sense of self.

Every day I walk into Restore Hair Loss Salon, I feel grateful. Grateful for the legacy my mom left me, for the craft I’ve mastered over nearly three decades, and most of all, for the privilege of walking beside each guest on their unique journey. This work has never been just a career, it's my calling.

My passion has always been to provide a place where guests can truly feel like themselves again, a space where they are cared for, understood, and supported. Now, as a salon owner, I get to combine my artistry, technical expertise, and lifelong experience to do what I absolutely love. And every morning when I walk into my salon, I feel immense gratitude that I not only followed in my mother’s footsteps, but built upon them, creating a legacy of care and innovation for the next generation.

I didn’t just inherit my mom’s skills, I inherited her heart for people. And that’s the legacy I carry forward at Restore Hair Loss Salon: a legacy of care, craft, and compassion, where every guest leaves feeling whole again.

The Hidden Market

Why Trich-Friendly Stylists Have a Competitive Edge

I used to go months, or sometimes over a year, without getting my hair cut. People would say to me, "Wow, your hair is getting so long!" and I'd respond with some vague comment about trying to grow it out. But the truth was, fear and embarrassment kept me out of salons.

I've had trichotillomania, or compulsive hair pulling, since I was about 12 years old,

which caused noticeable patches of missing hair. Other unsolicited comments have included, “Why is your ponytail so thin?” and, “Do you know you have a bald spot?” I had so much shame about my pulling that I told anyone who asked that my hair loss was caused by a medical condition, alopecia areata.

This explanation was usually sufficient to avoid further questioning or pushback from the general public, but I still avoided

getting my hair cut because it was so uncomfortable for me to have someone looking up close at the damage that my pulling had caused. When I did finally manage to schedule an appointment, I was so embarrassed by the end of it that I wouldn’t go back to them again – which left me “hairdresser hopping” for years.

When I started to open up about it in my 30s, I was finally able to tell one stylist, Renee, who had such a helpful response – she shared that she also pulled from her eyebrows, and used bangs to hide any irregularities.

The BFRB community isn’t just looking for a haircut – they’re looking for compassion, advanced skills, and a safe space. Stylists who can provide this combo don't just gain clients, they gain passionate advocates who will refer friends and family for years to come.

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 33

From then on, Renee was my girl! I had found someone that I trusted and felt safe with, so there was no need to keep jumping to other stylists. Renee also didn’t call out when I went to six months between haircuts. She understood. Unfortunately for me, after a few years, Renee decided to go back to school for a different profession, which left me looking for a new stylist again. I tried a few others, but their reactions when I disclosed the reason for my bald spots were awkward, or they just didn’t have the skills for my complex hair needs. So I was back to hairdresser hopping.

Then I found Bridget. Bridget didn’t have trich like Renee, but she was warm and understanding about my hair pulling, and she did a fabulous job of evening out my thin areas. And I have stuck with Bridget ever since.

My story isn’t unique. For many people with trichotillomania, going to a salon or meeting a new stylist can be such an uncomfortable and embarrassing ordeal that they just avoid it altogether. So when they find someone they can trust and feel comfortable with, they become incredibly loyal customers.

With an estimated 3 to 10 million people in America having trichotillomania, the body-focused repetitive behavior (BFRB)

community represents a significantly underserved market, and many of them are desperate to find a professional they can trust – they just don’t know how to find them.

Consider this: while typical clients might switch stylists for convenience, price, or variety, trich clients who find professionals they are comfortable with often stay for years. These are clients who will drive farther, pay more, and book regularly once they feel safe and understood. And when you connect with trich clients, it’s not only your professional services they’ll be receiving – it’s also a safe space and confidence boost for those who really need it.

So how can you help if you feel called to support the trich community? There are several strategic ways to connect with these potential clients:

Partner with Healthcare Providers: Contact local dermatology, psychiatry, or psychotherapy practices to let medical and mental health providers know that you’re a reliable resource for BFRB clients. Specialized providers such as psychodermatologists or therapists specializing in BFRBs are harder to find, but would be especially helpful to pair up with. Many doctors and therapists would love to have a stylist resource for clients, but don’t know who has the understanding and skills needed.

Connect with Local BFRB Support Groups: If your area has a local BFRB support group, contact the group organizer to let them know that you can help! They may already know who really needs your services and can pass your info on to attendees.

Identify Trich Customers Already In Your Chair: If you see a client with uneven density or length that’s not consistent with normal breakage, areas with varying degrees of hair loss, unusual regrowth pattern, they may have trich. You might help them feel more comfortable disclosing their hair pulling if you say something like, “I see clients who have hair loss for so many different reasons, from medical conditions to hair pulling, and I welcome them all. Hair loss is tough, regardless of the cause.”

The BFRB community isn’t just looking for a haircut – they’re looking for compassion, advanced skills, and a safe space. Stylists who can provide this combo don't just gain clients, they gain passionate advocates who will refer friends and family for years to come.

In a crowded market where stylists compete on price and convenience, you can differentiate yourself by offering something far more valuable: compassion. The trich community needs you, and when you show up for them they’ll show up for you, in ways that will transform your business.

Making Confidence

Choosing the Right Payment Plans for Your Salon

For many clients experiencing hair loss, investing in wigs, toppers, or high-quality extensions is about more than style; it’s about self-esteem and confidence. But with costs often ranging from a few hundred to several thousand dollars, sticker shock can cause hesitation at checkout.

The good news? Flexible payment plan options — from “buy now, pay later” (BNPL) apps to salon-focused financing platforms — make these life-changing products more affordable while helping salons close more sales.

But with so many providers — PayPal Pay Later, Klarna, Cherry, Afterpay, Affirm, GlossGenius, and beyond — how do you know which to choose? Here’s what salon owners need to know about the most popular options, what they cost, and best practices for rolling them out.

The Major Players

• Clients love it: Trusted name, shortterm “Pay in 4” interest-free or extended financing options.

• Downside: Requires a PayPal account; long-term plans may charge interest.

• Cost to salon: ~2.9% + $0.30 (slightly higher for BNPL). You’re paid upfront.

• Clients love it: Four interest-free payments, sleek app, heavily marketed.

• Clients love it: Tailored for healthcare/ beauty, soft credit checks, higher approval rates.

• Downside: Less recognized; may require your team to explain.

• Cost to salon: 2.9-5%. You get paid upfront.

• Clients love it: Great for big-ticket purchases, with financing up to 36 months. Clear, transparent terms.

• Downside: Interest rates can be steep; not every client qualifies.

• Cost to salon: 5-6%. Paid upfront.

• Downside: Limited long-term financing; potential late fees.

• Cost to salon: 3-6% per transaction. You’re paid in full immediately.

• Clients love it: Popular with younger shoppers, “Pay in 4” model, quick approvals.

• Downside: Purchase limits — better for toppers and small extension purchases, not custom wigs.

• Cost to salon: 4-6%. Paid upfront.

• Clients love it: Built for beauty and wellness, integrates booking, payments, and financing.

• Downside: Less recognition outside the industry; long-term financing limited.

• Cost to salon: 2.6% for cards, ~6% for BNPL. Paid upfront.

Other Notable Options

• Sezzle: Gen Z–friendly, soft credit checks, interest-free installments.

• Denefits & Credee: No-credit-check approvals, flexible plans, designed for beauty and personal care.

• Square + Afterpay: Combines POS hardware and BNPL.

• Salon management systems like MangoMint, Zenoti, and Pabau Pay: Integrated booking and payments with financing add-ons.

More Accessible Best Practices for Salons Adding Payment Plans

Which Payment Plan Fits Your Salon Best?

Average Purchase Under $500 (toppers, partial extensions)

• Afterpay or Klarna — interest-free installments, simple and familiar.

Average Purchase $500–$1,500 (premium toppers, ready-to-wear wigs)

• PayPal Pay Later or Sezzle — trusted brands with flexible options.

Average Purchase $1,500–$3,000 (custom wigs, premium bundles)

• Cherry or GlossGenius — industry-focused, flexible approvals.

Average Purchase Over $3,000 (custom systems, full extension packages)

• Affirm — long-term financing (up to 36 months), predictable monthly payments.

Want All-in-One Simplicity (booking

+ payments +

financing)?

• GlossGenius, MangoMint, or Zenoti — streamlined salon operations.

Pro Tip: Offer two options — one short-term (Klarna/Afterpay) and one long-term (Affirm/Cherry). This balances accessibility for smaller purchases with flexibility for premium investments.

For hair loss salons, payment plans are more than convenience — they’re a bridge to accessibility. By reducing the upfront cost barrier, you empower more clients to say “yes” to wigs, toppers, and extensions that restore confidence.

The winning strategy? Pair a mainstream BNPL provider with a salonfocused partner. That way, you meet clients where they are — whether they want a quick four-part payment or a longer-term financing plan.

Because at the end of the day, you’re not just selling hair. You’re helping clients feel like themselves again, and the right payment plan makes that transformation possible.

1. Know Your Margins. BNPL fees are higher than card processing. Price accordingly.

2. Promote Financing Early. Mention “monthly payments available” in marketing, not just at checkout.

3. Be Transparent. Build trust by clearly explaining terms and fees.

4. Train Your Team. Staff should present financing as a helpful option, not a last resort.

5. Start Small.

Begin with one or two providers, then expand if needed.
