I really thought no one read my editorial! WRONG, WRONG, WRONG, BAD WRONG. A recent editorial was about the best and worst concession stand food around the stock show rings. I really didn’t give it much thought. Obviously! I’m old and I guess forgetful. I’m dumb, I eat without thinking, completely clueless! I’m crazy. I’m lazy. And I’m out of excuses for leaving lots of good people out of my editorial.

Do you know how hard it is to answer a person who has diligently volunteered time and cooking ability to help out stock show kids? Try answering her or him on why they were left out, the best kid magazine in the country. My email, text and phone lit up, and at first, I couldn’t really figure out why. Why were they saying, “Why didn’t you mention the homemade pies at my show.”

I’m not going to mention any names or schools in this article. I’ve made that mistake once and not again. Why wasn’t our soup mentioned you said? Three years ago, it was the best meal you’ve ever eaten, you said.

Why wasn’t our German Kraut dogs mentioned? You ate so many of them at the sale that you got sick?

How can you not mention the ribeye sandwiches that saved your tail at the district, year after year?

How could you not mention the ladies homemade pies and desserts that you snacked on through the whole show?

How can you forget us when our money raised each year funds mud boots and Carhartt coveralls for all our show team? Why! Why! Why! Why didn’t I mention the corn chowder dip that has been the staple, my food source at OKC for 30+ years or better yet the refrigerator in the goat stall that provides me with that boost of energy in mid-afternoon?

I do actually love all of you and respect your efforts and ability. I’m just stupid. I’m just an idiot. Yes, I’m trying to save face. If I don’t, I’ll be skinny by the end of March. So when you see me and I give you a hug and start apologizing and ask for food, just know that you are saving me.

Me, the needy. Keep up all of your great work. Booster clubs and concession stands, you are the local communities rock stars to our show kids.

See you down the road, and I work for food. I really do love you all that take care of me. OYE, here we come!

Oologah members collected 135 winter clothing items for local school students.

Oologah club set out to “Share the Warmth” for their local schools in January. Led by member, Tad Dillard, he encouraged his fellow members to collect gently used and new winter hats, gloves, scarves, coats and sweatshirts for the two local elementary schools.

The club set a goal to collect 100 items to share with their friends. Trummel’s Drug and Gift store located in Oologah welcomed the opportunity to be a main collection point for the community.

4-H members worked together and encouraged the community to give towards their project. The club was able to collect 135 winter clothing items!

Items were shared with the lower and upper elementary schools in Oologah to freely give to any student needing a bit, warmth.

Oologah wants to encourage you to share the warmth with your friends in your community this winter season.

The Stilwell shop classes have agreed to restore Mr. Starr’s tractor as a tribute to his contributions to the program and in celebration, the chapter’s 100 year history.

By Kaylee Stewart, Stilwell Reporter The Stilwell Agriculture Education Program is celebrating its 100th year anniversary. Stilwell High School implemented it’s agricultural education program back in 1922, that’s six years before the National Association was even established in ‘28.

Agriculture Education has always been a source, pride and tradition for the Stilwell community, and the marks that this program has left on those that took advantage, its offerings can be seen all over the county and the state. Through the years this program has impacted countless students by teaching them valuable life skills that have supported them in endeavors from all walks, life.

This program has helped produce doctors, lawyers, teachers, and congressmen, not to mention the hundreds, past, present and future agriculturalists that dot the landscape and help feed the world.

One, the major contributors to the success and productivity, this program has been the men and women who have led the program through Page 14 - MARCH 2022

its 100 year journey. Stilwell Ag-Ed has had 30 instructors each, which in their own way have left behind a legacy.

One instructor stands out among the rest as having led the program for nearly half, its existence. Mr. Colbert Starr served as a chapter advisor for 39 years. In that time Mr. Starr left a legacy that will not soon be forgotten.

In the late 70’s and early 1980’s the Stilwell Agriculture Education program was breaking records right and left. From speech contests to career development events, and livestock exhibitions the program was hard to beat. The program also boasted some, the highest enrollment numbers in the state calling for additional instructors to be hired, this program was in desperate need, more room.

Mr. Starr and his co-teacher Mr. Bob Doyle had no idea at the time but in the early 80’s they were establishing their legacy…..the “new” agriculture education building Mr. Starr spearheaded the design, the classrooms and the animal science lab. While Mr. Doyle took point on the design, the shop facility, and the greenhouses. These men championed

their plans until their dream came to fruition in 1982 when the building was completed.

Mr. Starr retired in 1988 and the district dedicated the building in his honor. To this day the Stilwell Agriculture Education building is the envy, districts across the state and has been repeatedly copied by districts wanting to improve their own facilities.

On Wednesday, January 12, the Stilwell chapter held their monthly chapter meeting at the Agricultural Education building at Stilwell High School. At this meeting, the current advisors unveiled a special project that students will be working on for the next few months.

Mr. Gilstrap was discussing the chapter’s 100 year history with members, the Starr Family in Stilwell and they generously donated Colbert Starr’s 1948 Farmall H tractor to the chapter. This tractor is a significant piece, agricultural history, and is an important symbol, our chapter and the community because, the legacy and impact Mr. Starr left behind.

competition this fall, as well as be exhibited at local and state fairs and shows. Stay tuned for more details….

I am a history buff and this tractor represents a lot, history for our chapter. I hope when we are done it will honor Mr. Starr’s legacy and be a source, pride for the community. I believe this will be a good accomplishment for the chapter and the town.” - Riley O’Neal, Greenhand “I’m extremely excited to be restoring this tractor with my friends.

Sentinel has been on the move these past few winter months... everything from speech contests to Share-theFun performances to livestock shows and everything in between.

The West District South Region Speech Contest was held at Fort Cobb, Jan. 8. Representing Sentinel Junior were Bentlee Lester, 1st place “The Life, Dr Seuss,” expressive arts illustrated presentation; Hadley Russ, 3rd place, “All About Sloths,” animal science speech; Maddux Funkhouser, 1st place, “How to Bottle Feed a Calf,” animal science illustrated presentation; and Madi Davidson, 3rd place, “Rocks Rule!” expressive arts illustrated presentation.

Washita County Share-the-Fun, held at Burns Flat, was the end of January. Once again, these girls did a great job performing their acts: Jr small group act, “The Cat in the Hat” skit, by Maddux Funkhouser, Hadley Russ, Grace Rose and Bentlee Lester- 2nd place; Jr individual act, “A Million Dreams” solo, by Bentlee Lester- 2nd place; and Jr individual act, “Maybe” solo, by Madi Davidson- 1st and champion. The “Cat in the Hat” skit was both written and “directed” by Junior Maddux Funkhouser. It was about growing up leaders, and it was exciting to see her vision come to life!

Show season is in full force for all our livestock exhibitors. Local, county and district shows are building momentum for the all-important OYE! At the 77th Sentinel Junior Livestock Show in February, Seniors offered a petting zoo to the elementary students who came to watch the show. Brianna Cross committed to leading this project. She had great help from Maggie, Marya and Gunther. These four, along with Jackson, led the petting zoo

all on their own. They even found and arranged for the animals to be there! The elementary students enjoyed this “hands-on” experience at the barn! Clover shout-out to Mr. Graybill for transportation out to the barn, to him and Jackson for loaning a rabbit, to Cori Musick for bringing Gus the mini-bull to town, to Mr. Carlson for sharing Hot Wing the rooster, and Susan Baker for offering Karen the sheep and Buster the dog. THANK YOU!!

Sentinel rounded out February with attending the overnight Science Museum trip and learning some fun new photo-taking tips from local photographer Julie Towery during their monthly meeting. Two 4-H’ers, Noah Burris and Madi Davidson enjoyed this unique hands-on “after hours” experience at the Museum in OKC. Jackson Graybill shares his rabbit with younger students at the petting zoo during the local livestock show.

Hi guys, this is Trenton!

Even though it’s snowing, spring is coming soon.

OYE is only 45 days away as I write this with the snow falling.

Since it’s really cold make sure your animals are warm and have clean water and that is not frozen.

We have a snowdrift around my house and barn.

I got a cool four wheeler for Christmas, and I have got to use it. It is set up for hunting and it has two gun racks on the front. I attended the one-day ATV training class in Guthrie. Mom‘s friend Jim Rhodes with OSU Extension teaches it. Farm Bureau also sponsors the training. I got a really cool helmet for completing the training.

At school, we have been playing a lot, basketball. We have only two more games to win before going to the small school rural state tournament.

I like basketball at the New Year’s Nationals in Woodward. They have a knockout tournament for basketball kids, and I won the banner. I have a few banners in my barn but not a basketball one hanging.

This is my first. School has been out and we have been distance learning because, bad weather.

On another note, last fall me and Papa made a bet when we were at the Perry show. I bet him that my goat Googin will place better than the goat he likes call Bandido. If Googin place is the highest at OYE, I’ll get a fishing reel of my choice. If I lose, I have to buy Papa one. I’m going to win. It’s been fun kidding Papa all winter and spring.

The ducks were late coming down from up north because it stayed warm for a long time up there. But what’s really neat is that it’s about time to go fishing.

So, we better clean our reels, put on new line and stock up on lures and bait . It’s time to catch your lunker! I have a goal to catch an 8-pound bass and a 12-pound catfish this summer. I can’t wait!

I will see all of you guys at the local, county, district and OYE. Work hard now, and we’ll have fun at the shows.

What’s the best hunting trip you’ve ever been on?

Six years ago when you and I shot rabbits in the tree row at our new Ag Youth Office in the snow. You learning to shoot the Model 37 410 single barrel made my day.

The OSU Animal Science Academic Quadrathlon Team from left are Chace McCoy, Miranda Iager, Erica Nightengale and Hunter McConnell.

The OSU Animal Science Academic Quadrathlon Team competed in the Southern Section Academic Quadrathlon on January 22-23 in Stephenville and Fort Worth, Texas. The team placed in the top five in three, the four events, including winning the Quiz Bowl portion, the competition, on their way to a fourth place overall finish. The team is coached by Blake Wilson and Brittany Lippy.

The Quiz Bowl team members are Ella Allen, Elisa Allen, Courtney Thomas, Colton Stinnett and Payton Irick.

For the first time in 60 years, Seminole County had a team competing at a national competition. They traveled to Louisville, Kentucky, to the North America International Livestock Expo. They competed in Livestock Quiz Bowl against other teams and won fifth place.

Newkirk and Livestock Booster held a Donkey Basketball Fundraiser on January 15. Over 200 people attended.

On January 29, three of the nine in the NOC Sheep Production and Management class traveled to Ft. Worth, Texas, to participate in the Open Sheep Show at the Ft Worth Stock Show and Rodeo (FWSSR). Brandi Whittle, Parker Gottschalk and Stetson LeForce were the students making the trip to exhibit 13 Dorset, Hampshire and Suffolk sheep in the show.

To wrap up a busy week and semester, the Members hosted their December meeting. Members wore their favorite Christmas pajamas and exchanged gifts for the holidays.

By Blaiklyn Grimmett, Wellston Reporter In the month, December The Wellston Chapter worked to bring holiday cheer to the community.

Each year, the chapter conducts an Angel Tree drive, where community members can sponsor a child in need for Christmas, purchasing necessities like clothes and shoes, as well as gifts for the student. This Christmas, 29 children were sponsored through the Angel Tree project. Without the support, community members and students, this activity would have not been possible.

A group, members spent time downtown, volunteering at the Acts,

Love food pantry. Students unpacked items from pallets and boxed them up to be collected by families later in the week. In total, the food pantry served the community, Wellston with over 80 boxes, food for families in need!

At the local elementary school, members, as well as Santa Clause, delivered “santa grams” to students.

The santa grams were sold to parents and teachers, who would have them sent to their students. Each Santa gram included a drink, their choice, a candy cane, and a note from Santa.

The proceeds from this activity went to a donation for the local senior citizens center.

To spread more holiday cheer, members delivered poinsettias to elderly members, the community.

Several, these individuals were former teachers or supporters, the school system.

“It was truly inspiring to see the joy that a small gift, like a poinsettia, could bring to people”, said Shaley Barnes, a senior Wellston member.

To conclude the first semester, the chapter held their December meeting, which was Christmas themed. Members wore their favorite holiday pajamas and brought gifts for one another to exchange during a game, “Dirty Santa.” Members enjoyed time spent together.

Each year, one student dresses up as Santa to deliver the Santa Grams to elementary students. This year, FFA Chaplain Cooper Priddy delivered Santa Grams to students.

Senior Food Science Tours Distillery Shattuck Celebrates the Holidays

The Shattuck Officers celebrated the holiday season a little differently this year. Instead, a gift exchange, the team decided to give back by shopping for angel tree gifts for the local community., course, the shopping included a little twist, every officer dressed up in some sort, Christmas costume, the goofier the better.

Stops were made at Dollar General and Walmart, and boy did the officers stand out! As the officers paired off to shop for various gifts,

other shoppers laughed, videoed, gave high fives, and congratulated each, them on their fun Christmas spirit and willingness to give back to our community.

After a fun shopping trip, which included photo opportunities with Walmart employees, the officers finished the night with a delicious meal at Wilson’s restaurant in Woodward.

Shattuck wrapped up a busy 2021 and plans were made for an even busier 2022. Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year from Shattuck!

By Emmie Swanson, Shattuck Reporter Recently, the Shattuck Senior Food Science class went on a field trip to the new Rock Creek Distillery, located in Shattuck, Oklahoma.

Jason Swanson, master distiller and owner, gave an entertaining and information-packed tour, their facility.

Swanson highlighted all the ways agriculture is integral in the distilling process.

That day, the crew was working on a batch, Dead Parrot Silver Rum, which started in the mash-tun, a distiller’s term for a big tank, where molasses and sugar cane are mixed together with water and yeast to begin fermentation.

Swanson stated that the origin, the sugar cane and molasses is very important, as the flavor, the rum is affected by how and where the ingredients are grown, including the type, soil they are grown in.

Rock Creek uses blackstrap molasses and raw cane sugar produced on a family farm in Louisiana, which gives the final product a rich and sweet taste. Molasses is actually a byproduct, the sugarcane refining process, and sugarcane is big business in American agriculture.

When vodka or whiskey are produced, cereal grains are used in the distillation process. Rock Creek’s signature vodka, Schultz Vodka, is made from locally grown wheat. The grain is mixed with yeast, creating a “mashbill,” which is a distillers term for the ingredients that are mixed together to create the liquor. After this base is mixed together, the fermentation process begins, and the ingredients begin to break down, forming simple ethyl alcohol.

Distillation is next. The mixture is heated, and the resulting vapor is collected as it condenses into a liquid.

This distilled liquid is what will become the bottled alcohol product, and the remaining solids that are left over are called spent grains, or distillers grains.

Distillers grains are a valuable by-product to both distillers and livestock producers, as most will test between 85%-95% total digestible nutrients. Rock Creek’s distillers grains are fed back to cattle on farms right here in Ellis County. Don’t worry though, you won't find any intoxicated cattle stumbling through local pastures, as the distillation process removes all the alcohol from the grains.

Swanson demonstrated their bottling process, discussed the rigorous federal approvals needed for alcohol producers, talked about the history, prohibition, food and flavor science involved in his industry, and even touched on marketing tactics used by liquor companies to sell their products. He used the example that some vodka brands advertise their product as gluten free, when in fact, all distilled alcohols are gluten free, as the distilling process removes the protein from the product.

Swanson reminded the students to be educated consumers, and to research food concerns or questions instead, buying something based on a label. All in all, the Senior Food Science had maybe the best and most informative field trip to date, and are grateful to have this new business in the Shattuck community!

President Baylee Brown, Vice President KayLea Taylor, Secretary Hanna Schmidt, and Reporter Casyn Larman traveled to the Stillwater Radio Station on January 4 to share their experiences and the M-O’s accomplishments with Radio Host Jay McRae on 105.5FM. Jay asked the officers many questions about how has impacted their lives, what activities the chapter had participated in during the first semester, the school year, and what we are looking forward to in 2022.

For the officers, this was a great opportunity to learn interviewing skills and represent their fellow members. The officers had a blast getting to meet and talk with Jay and are very thankful for the opportunity to express what the M-O is doing for the students and the community. The M-O chapter has focused on community service projects to help Mulhall and Orlando, as well as surrounding towns during this school year, and it was wonderful to discuss it with Jay. Once again, a big thank you to Jay McRae and 105.5 FM Stillwater Radio for letting our chapter visit!

“The Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Foundation is dedicated to preserving the heritage of the West and the viability of Oklahoma’s beef cattle industry through research and education,” said Tiffani Pruitt, OCA director of operations. “What better way to preserve our industry than to invest in young people that display a sincere interest in cattle and Oklahoma ranching.”

Application deadline is May 2.

Scholarship winners will be notified no later than July 5. Scholarship presentations will take place during the 70th Annual Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Association Convention and Trade Show in Norman, Okla., July 22–23, and the 38th Annual OCA Ranch Rodeo in Guthrie, Okla., August 19–20.

The Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Foundation was created to provide a charitable trust for the Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Association and Oklahoma Junior Cattlemen’s Association. When you support the Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Foundation, you support beef cattle educational programs, research projects in cooperation with Oklahoma State University, educational scholarships for Oklahoma’s 4-H and FFA youth and the preservation of the Oklahoma beef cattle industry and its traditions.
