There's nothing that says Fall like cool air and the smell of the fair. To watch a city or county or state fair come alive as the sun goes down is exciting. I am always amazed at how good food, good folks, and fun for the kids have remained such a yearly tradition. Fairs were started by farmers and farmers' wives many years ago to showcase the fruits of their local harvest and their labors of love. Wow has it gone into so much more. It is so fun to watch as kids compete not only in the showring, but Farm Hand Olympics. Riding rides and showing livestock are almost a sideshow compared to the urban crowd grazing at a rabbit or a calf. That's not to mention the look on a child's face when a chicken crows.

So this fall, all you stock show buddies, I challenge you to step across the street. Get out of the barn. It won't kill ya. Do a little people watching for those are the people of our future. It is our job to feed, clothe, and house that population that is amazed at our animals and culture. Oh, and don't forget the food. You can find me at the Oklahoma Cattlemen's Rib Eye Sandwich line at the Tulsa State Fair. I can smell it now.

Inola FFA Shares Love of Animals

While talking with the owners of Zena Suri Alpacas located in Zena, OK, they learned all about breeding, showing, and by-products. Their favorite part was getting to pet the alpacas and even getting kissed by one! The team learned all about something new, and enjoyed a very unique experience.

ALPACA TOUR The Inola FFA officer team got the privilege of taking an agriculture industry tour to an alpaca farm during their officer retreat this summer. They went to grow their knowledge in an industry they knew nothing about, and accomplished their goal!

PETTING ZOO The Inola FFA held a petting zoo in the ag barn. All animals were provided by students enrolled in Inola FFA. The entire Pre-K class came to visit and so did the entire Special Needs program. We had goats, sheep, chickens, a horse, and a steer. The officers took turns sharing facts about each animal and answered all the questions the kids had. And to top it all off, we had students giving the kids face paintings. This was a great experience for younger kids who don't get to leave the classroom very often to learn about animals in agriculture. The FFA members also learned how to interact with all kinds of people, and that it is important for

On August 3, the Foyil FFA Offi cers hosted a back to school bash for the chapter members and friends. The bash was held at the local Spencer Creek Cove Park on Oologah Lake. Foyil FFA members participated in yard games such as corn hole, spike ball, horse shoes and ladder ball. Members also had the opportunity to go swimming at the sandy beach. The chapter brought a set of fishing poles for the members to try their hand at fishing. Members could just hang out with each other and enjoy the time outside. Theo Loyd and Ryley’s dad, fired up the grill, and Mr. Jinkens cooked hamburgers and hotdogs for the crew. There was chips, veggies and fruit trays with dip for each. Foyilstudents are very close to each other, so the chapter invited other students to the Back to School Bash.

There were around 50 Foyil FFA members in attendance as well as an The Pavilion at Spencer Creek made for a great meeting spot. Foyil FFA members and friends gathered round for a quick photo. There were so many activities, it was hard to get everyone in the picture at once. other 10-15 fellow students, siblings, and parents. It was an opportunity for members and officers to get to know each other. Richard Lomax, chapter parliamentarian, stated he enjoyed playing spike ball without knowing the rules, swimming with his socks on, and playing corn hole with other members. Carolina, sophomore member, enjoyed the food, swimming, and bonding with members. Jack, sophomore member, enjoyed being outside the ag building and bonding with members. Joelle Peterson, president; Alexis Ryder, historian; and Shadow Holmes, secretary; all enjoyed being able to bond with all members and having a FFA monthly meeting outside of the ag building.Theevening ended with ev eryone pitching in to pick up trash around the area, loading up the truck, and riding the bus back to the school. The Foyil FFA Chapter would like to send a huge thank you to the Oologah Corp of Engineers for providing such a great place to events at the Spencer Creek Pavilion as well as the parents that helped make the evening a success. The swimming beach is a good place at Spencer Creek Cove. Swimming with your fellow friends is always a great time.

The Reserve Grand Champion Market Ham honor went to Carter Petree of Tipton. He is the son of Garret Petree and Shonda Koechner and is a member of the Tipton FFA Chapter. Carter’s ham weighed 20.71 pounds. The ham was purchased by OBP Agency for $2,000 and was donated to the Missouri 4-H Foundation.

Chapter leaders from more than 40 chapters participated this summer in the two-day Chapter Leadership Training conferences held across Kansas. While participating in the conference leaders were encouraged to participate in the chapter challenge at the conference. The state officers challenged the chapters to bring at least 10 non-perishable food items or toiletry products to be donated at the conclusion of the of each conference. More than 600 items were collected from the three conferences.

Carsyn Petree, daughter of Garret Petree and Shonda Koechner, is the exhibitor of the 2022 Grand Champion Ham at the Missouri State Fair. Carsyn is from Tipton, and is a member of the Tipton 4-H Club. Carsyn’s prize-win ning ham weighed 19.91 pounds. Carsyn’s ham was purchased by Missouri Soybean Association for $2,800. Carsyn donated 10% of the proceeds to the Missouri State Fair Foundation in support of the Goat Pavilion fund.

Hey guys It's me Trenton

We've started school, and I'm sure you have, too. This year, I'm doing three sports—football, basketball and track. What's really exciting, this is my first year to go to Newkirk School and my first year in FFA. I'm anxious to get my FFA jacket. My FFA advisor is Mrs. Rinehart. Make sure you do good on your grades in school or you won't get to play sports or to show your animal. Before school started, I was lucky to have a really fun summer. I went fishing, but that eight-pounder is still on the loose.

I attended my first 4-H Roundup. It was really fun to do different workshops and meet different kids from across the state. It wasn't too hot, but it was a little warm. I also went to the OSU Basketball Camp for three days and the Cowley County College Camp. They were really, really fun. Dove season is on now. Time to try to hit those fast flying things. Let's Go Huntin'!

How hard is it to learn the FFA Creed?

It's very easy. There are only 258 words, six sentences and five paragraphs. It was written by E.M. Tiffany.

I did host a one-day fishing clinic in Cordell in Washi ta County. There were 16 kids, and had good time. (See photos below.)

The Oklahoma Department of Agriculture did the research in checking with the Beef Breeds across the country and determining which young people had the best of the best in the many junior national cattle shows from across the United States during the summer of 2022.

Oklahoma Ag Secretary Blayne Arthur thought there might be a doz en or so winners, and she was looking forward to bringing them to the State Capitol to honor them. But, as the numbers were added up, it was a lot more than just 10 or 12. Based on the survey of the Beef Breed Associa tions, Oklahoma had 34 young people who brought home a champion or a reserve champion banner from a national cattle show this summer.

A celebration was planned by Oklahoma State Secretary of Ag Blayne Arthur and her ODAFF team. It included taking pictures of the young people on the steps of the State Capitol and for the winners to hear in person congratulations from Gov ernor Kevin Stitt, as well as several State Lawmakers. The group received citations from many state lawmakers. The 34 Champions represent sev eral hundred young Oklahomans who have traveled to multiple states for these summer shows here in 2022.

Senior Farm and Ranch Broad caster Ron Hays spent time with the young people and their families on Thursday. He talked to two of the "old hands" when it came to the show ring and are members of the Oklaho ma Department of Ag Youth Council for the coming year—Morley Griffith of Shawnee and Turner Longacre of Bristow.Here's the complete list of Grands and Reserves honored at the Capitol:

The AFR Youth Advisory Council is an opportunity for high school seniors who are active in the AFR Youth Program to further their leadership and program management skills. Council members assist in planning many AFR Youth Program events, facilitate general AFR events and act as mentors for younger Oklahoma youth. Council members also participate in agriculture-based service projects throughout the year.

Hobart FFA members Zell Freeman, Jenna Holt, and Polly Tacker recently attended the Washington Leadership Conference in Washington, D.C., June 19-27. Along with 92 other Oklahoma FFA members, they traveled through many states on a 27-hour bus ride to get to the conference. Upon arrival, they joined with 200 other members from various states. They saw Arlington National Cem etery, many monuments, and even got to be a part of histo ry. On Friday, June 24, WLC attendees were exploring Capitol Hill when the news broke that the Supreme Court had overturned Roe v. Wade less than a football field away from where they stood.

BIG 3—Members spent three days at Big 3 Livestock Field Days practicing their goat, sheep, hog and cattle judging skills.

Over the four days of Alumni Camp, members learned valuable leadership skills and made lasting friendships with other FFA members across the state. Courtney Blagg had the honor of raising the flag with Central Area Vice President Presley Pullen and speaking in the flag ceremo ny on the last morning of camp!

SHEEP AND GOAT CAMP—Oologah FFA held our annual sheep and goat camp on July 29 at our school arena. 4-H and FFA members learned valuable clipping, fitting, and showmanship skills taught by some of our own members as well as, Macy Koch, and Owen Hossack.

ALUMNI CAMP—Oologah FFA had 29 kids attend the 2022 Alumni Leadership Camp, Making it the largest number of members we’ve had attending in the same year! We had nine members attend the second session of the “happiest place on earth” and 20 members in session 3!

FARM BUREAU REPORTERS CONFERENCE—Courtney Blagg attended tthe Farm Bureau Reporters Conference to learn photography, social media, and writing skills.

AFR LEADERSHIP SUMMIT—Next, six of our members headed back to Oklahoma City to the AFR Leadership Summit. where they spent four days and three nights learning leadership skills.

LIVESTOCK SHOW—Members ended the summer competing in our very own livestock show, where Oologah FFA had a lot of success such as Grand Champion Market Steer, Reserve Champion Market Steer, Grand Champion Market Wether, and Reserve Champion Market Wether.

Kalei Kellog was also given the opportunity to lower the flag with Northeast Area Vice President Kyla Taylor and also spoke on the flag ceremony team.

OFFICER RETREAT—The 2022-2023 Oologah FFA officer team headed off to Beaver, Arkansas for our annual officer retreat. During those three days, we planned exciting new chapter meetings, activities and events for the upcoming year, and participated in leadership and bonding activities to better ourselves and our team!

OYLE—Emily Cook, Courtney Blagg, and Ross Turner attended the very first Oklahoma Youth Legislative Experience at the Oklahoma State Capitol. These mem bers spent two days engaging in a mock legislative experi ence at the capital, presenting bills they wrote, listening to other 4-H and FFA members' bills, and vetoing and pass ing bills on the house floor. They also had the opportunity to volunteer their time at the Oklahoma City Food Pantry.

Advanced learned more terms to use and gave their reasons with the help of Lane Howe, Chris Hall, and Tyler Gradert. Students learned how to memorize, set up, and present a complete set of reasons as well as learn about bull EPD's.

Plus, a big THANK YOU to our sponsors and volunteers for making this such a successful event!

The Waynoka FFA hosted the "Best of the Best" Reasons Camp May 2325. During this time there were many classes of breeding does, breeding ewes, performance bulls, Simmental heifers, Red Angus heifers, market hogs, and breeding gilts evaluated. FFA and 4-H livestock judging teams traveled from Alva, Fairview, Kingfisher, Seiling, Shat tuck, Vinita, and Waynoka to attend.

Throughout the three days the be ginners had help from Marlie Farris and Todd Blocker learning how to memorize a set of reasons while also presenting them,Brooketoo. Ferguson and Keith Martin helped the intermediates work on writing a set by themselves and giving them to the reasons taker.

A team representing the Guthrie FFA chapter in Guthrie, Oklahoma, has been named a finalist this year in the Power, Structural, and Technical Systems cate gory Division 2 of the competition. Team members are Zach Allen and Holden IngramThe National FFA Agriscience Fair is a key competition that is part of the annual National FFA Convention & Expo, Oct. 26 – 29, 2022 in Indianapolis. To qualify, FFA members working as individuals or teams in grades seven through 12 are required to conduct a scientific research project pertaining to the agriculture or food science industries and win their state’s FFA agriscience fair. Individuals or teams compete in one of six categories – animal systems; en vironmental services/natural resource systems; food products and processing systems; plant systems; power, structural and technical systems; or social science – in six divisions – individuals in grades 7-8, teams grades 7-8, individuals grades 9-10,teams grades 9-10, individuals in grades 11-12, and teams grades 11-12. First-place winners in each state have qualified for the national pre-qualifying judging. The panel of judges reviewed entries and selected a maximum of 12 in each category and division to move on to the national competition. The Fargo-Gage FFA chapter was represented at the 50th annual Okla homa FFA Alumni Leadership Camp at the Tulakogee Conference Center on Fort Gibson Lake near Wagoner, Okla.More than 1,600 FFA mem bers from over 300 Oklahoma FFA chapters are registered to attend one of four 3½-day sessions June 26-July 9 2022. Bexlei Good of the Fargo-Gage FFA along with many other FFA members from across the state attended Oklahoma Farm Bureau’s 2022 FFA Reporters Conference held Thursday, July 11, at the Sher aton Downtown Hotel in Oklahoma City. Designed to teach chapter FFA reporters how to promote FFA in their communities, the conference featured a variety of sessions to help students develop skills and knowledge in communications practices including photography and videography, social media, writing and graphic design.

Over 200 members and guests attended the annual Wellston FFA Banquet held at the High School Gymnasium on May 12. The evening began with an officer slide show as Lillianna Perrine and Mackenzie Webb introduced the 2021–2022 chapter officer team. Ava Davenport and Holli McConnell controlling the lights while Lawson Hunt did the sound. The 2021-2022 FFA Officers and Wylee Terrell presented opening ceremonies.Eighthgrade FFA members Hayden Green and Wylee Terrell gave the welcome. The invocation was given by Cooper Priddy before the meal. Freshman FFA members Brinley McLain, Ava Jo Davenport, Josie Murray, Tate McConnell, and Holli McConnel presented the FFA Creed to the guests. Blaiklyn Grim mett introduced the special guests in attendance.Proficiency awards were present ed by Shaley Barnes and Taylor Mc Connell to deserving FFA members with outstanding Supervised Agri cultural Experience programs. These Proficiency Awards were presented to Ross Nichols, Cooper Priddy, Tate McConnell, Saydee Her, Jett Golight ly, Hayden Green, Gauge McLin, Ja cob Fine, Justin Kelley, Wylee Terrell, and Shaley Barnes. FFA Advisors Marty Coulson and Brianna Roat presented the members with certificates for partici pating in Career Development Events. Kolton Hunt and Hayden Campbell presented the awards for the top meat sales to Kaden James, Jack McCork le, Mackenzie Webb, Brinley McLain, Hayden Green, Kaden Bozeman, Justin Kelley, Jett Golightly, Taylor McConnell, and Cooper Priddy. The Top Overall Salesman this year went to Cooper Priddy with a total sale of $8,328. FFA Advisers Marty Coulson and Brianna Roat presented Senior FFA member Shawn Bays with the Top Hand award for 2021-22. Re ceiving the Honorary Chapter FFA Degree was Micaela Halverson. The first annual Outstanding FFA Mem ber Award went to Wylee Terrell. Tate McConnell received the Star Greenhand award this year sponsored by Steffenson’s AFR Insurance in Wellston. Shawn Bays recognized all the Honorary State FFA Degree Recipients. Mr. Dwayne Danker and State Representative Kevin Wallace presented State FFA Degree Citations to Taylor McConnell, Shawn Bays, Haleigh Ohl, and Shaley Barnes. The Wellston FFA Chapter pre sented Vicky Magar with a thank you card and gift certificate for their ap preciation to her for all her hard work throughout the year. The Advisers presented Shaley Barnes with Chap ter Star in Agriscience and Taylor McConnell with Chapter Star Farmer. The AFR Scholarship, Bill Forgey Scholarship, Troy Swafford Schol arship, and Bill Mathew Scholarship was presented to Taylor McConnell. The Troy Swafford Scholarship was also presented to Haleigh Ohl. Final ly, the senior officers introduced the 2022-23 Chapter Officer Team. The Banquet ended with the 2022-23 offi cers presenting closing ceremonies.
