Driving home it hit me how small of a population niche we livestock show folks and ag folks are. We have to feed all those people plus millions more. We are a small crowd, in small towns, in a small state compared to the masses I witnessed on my drives across the fairgrounds. It's almost scary how they appear to take our passion for livestock and land for granted. Nevertheless, we will continue to feed the world. This is just Peck's view of the fair through the windshield of my golf cart. Enough said.
P.S.: One of my highlights of the day was giving Judy Col lins from Frederick a ride out to her car. One of the icons of our industry, former owner of Showstring Embroidery, one of the reason livestock showing has gown and grown, and a dear friend I don't see often enough.

Not all of you, but I figure many, have seen or rode on the Ag Youth golf cart. For those of you who haven't, it's a red golf cart with Ag Youth stickers all over it. I take it to OYE and the Tulsa State Fair. It's about 10 years old and has never been on a golfWell, course.just this past weekend, I decided to take my golf cart to the Oklahoma State Fair. I could park a mile away, easily carry several boxes of magazine, and give a few exhibitors rides, if needed. It worked great. I parked out past the OYE Office. It was a good ways to the barns. Probably a mile to go around and come in the main livestock gate, all the while driving through two main parking lots on the south side of the fairgrounds.

Now, I don't know how many people attend the first weekend of the Oklahoma State Fair. With the warm weather, there were many, many folks. I set this up to say that out of all those thousands I saw, I knew or recognized absolutely none. If it was OYE or Tulsa, I would recognize most.

Panama FFA member with an interest in Natural Resources took a field trip to the Red Slough Wildlife Management Area southeast of Idabel where members of the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation and Natural Resource Conservation Service gave them handson lessons in native wildlife and plant life. They discussed hydrology management to maintain and increase species diversity, climate factors on managing wildlife species and current alligator research projects underway.

Our students were very interested in career options in wildlife management and NRCS careers. Outdoor hands on learning is always more captivating than classroom, especially when alligators are involved.

In an attempt to get the community to get involved with the chapter, we held a new event called Ag Olym pics. It was a huge hit and a great day of fun.
In Inola, we have learned the benefits of working side by side with our community, and the best results are awe some traditions like Hay Day.

Every year the Town of Inola, Oklahoma, holds a community-wide event called Hay Day. Since Inola is considered the "Hay Capital of the World," businesses around town create objects out of hay and compete for a trophy. This year Inola FFA decided to join in on the compe tition and got first place! Along with the hay bale contest, there is also a parade float contest. We themed ours to the

classic movie "The Wizard of Oz" and placed first in that contest, too!

“I always had a love for agriculture and unfortunately in Hawaii there aren’t a lot of ag schools,” said Alexis Camara,
Hawaii, I never would have thought that I could intern with a breed association,” said Camara. “It’s a great learning experience. You get to experience a different ranch and how they do things, and every ranch has their ownDuringstyle.”

For many, hands-on learning serves as the most engag ing, interactive and practical way to retain information. The Talon internship program provides college-aged students the unique opportunity to spend their summer on an Angus operation gaining valuable, hands-on experience. Interns will gain extensive ranching knowledge while complimenting their skills as advocates for the beef industry. Host applications for the Angus/Talon Youth Educational Learning Program internship are due Oct. 31, and student intern applications are due Dec. 1.

“We are thankful for the vision of Cam Cooper in pre paring the next generation of leaders for Angus and the cattle industry,” said Jaclyn Upperman, Angus Foundation executive director.
