The picture says it all. Sometimes when a bad situation occurs and you, as an individual or company, have no control, it hurts. OYE 2020 was just that. Whether you were market exhibitors, OYE leadership, OYE supporter, or a grandparent cheering on the efforts of your kid, it hurt. But as we look forward, which is an agriculture-kind-of-thing we do, we realize some good will come out of this bad.

Trenton’s Thank You Note Drive was just that. At the Ag Youth booth, we got to see good people. People who cared about our industry, who cared about our leadership, who cared about our kids, and simply wanted to say thank you everyone for trying.

Folks, OYE 2021 will be here soon. Before that, there will be field days, judging camps, jackpot shows, local shows, county fairs, district shows, and yes, there will be the big ones, state fairs and OYE. Here we come. We will never again take these events nor the leaders of these events for granted.

It makes griping about a weight break or about the judge or about the facilities seems silly, now. We realize all the work and heart and effort that goes in to that thing we call stock showing. We will miss it for a bit, but look out, we will come back stronger. We will reload stock. We will regroup our shows and events, and all of us will appreciate everybody involved even more.

So if you have an event, it’s time to plan. It’s time to make it bigger. It’s time to make it better. We’ve learned in this industry what is important. God bless, be safe, and will see you down the road.

R E M R A F A K THAN T S A F K BREA Agriculture is a big part of most rural communities in Oklahoma. Every year during FFA week, the Fairview FFA chapter holds a “Thank A Farmer” breakfast.

On Wednesday, Feb. 26, the Fairview FFA chapter officers fed farmers Blue & Gold Sausage along with pancakes from MIO (made in Oklahoma) products.

This activity was started as an opportunity to farmers who give so much to us. As FFA members we realize that today farmers raise more commodities on less land.

These farmers further face more input costs and receive less money than his father or even grandfather did. Hopefully, this event lets our producers know they are appreciated and provides a place for fellowship and networking among those whose interests lie heavily in agriculture.

The Varnum 4-H has been visiting the Pioneer Nursing home in Seminole, Oklahoma, for years. The group’s visit this past December, however, was different than the rest.

The Varnum 4-H’ers were taught how to make homemade stockings and made a total of 54 for the nursing home residents. It took a lot of hard work and several weeks for the club members to complete the stockings.

Jenny Basque, a staff member at Varnum Elementary, took it upon herself to present a workshop in which she taught a few of the 4-H members how to cut the fabric, pin and sew together the stockings.

Those 4-H members then taught the rest of the group.

Once the stockings were completed, the 4-H’ers filled them with candy and goodies for the residents of the nursing home.

The Varnum 4-H members visited the Pioneer Nursing Home with bright smiles on their faces and were ready to present their gifts to the residents. The 4-H’ers started by singing some Christmas carols while another club member played the piano. The residents cheered them on and even sang along with them! After a few carols, the 4-H’ers split up and began delivering the stockings to all of the residents.

Visiting the residents of the nursing home has been a long-standing activity for Varnum 4-H, but club members never had gotten the responses from the residents they got on this visit. The reactions varied from person to person—some said thank you and some were curious as to who made the stockings. But, the most shocking reactions of all were those that were brought to tears.

One of the residents explained to a few 4-H members this was the only Christmas present she had gotten. She began to tear up as she expressed her gratitude to the 4-H members. This nursing home resident never had any visitors, and she said her heart was filled with joy that somebody would really go to all that trouble to make something so special for her. She hugged the 4-H members and said she hoped to see them soon, and she sure would.

All 4-H members pledge their hands to a larger service, and that is exactly what these Varnum 4-Hers did! Experiences like that one really are what 4-H is about.

None of the 4-H members knew how much of an impact they would make simply by giving someone a Christmas present. They learned that even the smallest act can make the biggest difference in someone’s life. agyouth.com

By Lainey Seaman On Tuesday, Feb, 18, six members of the Waynoka FFA Officer team traveled to Oklahoma City to attend FFA Day at the Capitol. The officers in attendance were Tabor Budy, Garrison George, Robert Perot, Sagelyn Budy, Mattie Pitts and Lainey Seaman.

Superintendent Scott Cline and Mr. Chad Budy accompanied the officers to the State Capital. While there,

the officers toured the capital and had the privilege to meet with State Representative Carl Newton, State Senators Casey Murdock and Roland Pederson and State FFA Advisor, Jack Staats. W We were honored that each of these men took time out of their busy day to meet with us. We are very fortunate to have the support of all these men for our FFA Organization!

About one week prior to the historical shut down of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo due to COVID-19 the NOC Sheep Production and Management Class attended the HLSR Open Sheep Show.

The students exhibited 15 head of Dorset, Hampshire and Suffolk sheep at this year’s show. The group ended up with 4 class winners, including the Champion Dorset Ewe. By Casey Kelso, Quinton FFA Advisor Quinton FFA started a “Seeds of Hope” outreach program where we donate fruit and vegetables seeds to the community Blessing Box. The seeds are available for community members to take home and start a garden as an additional food source during this time of uncertaint. It also provides an opportunity for agriculture education and family time.

We make deliveries and restock the Blessing Box every day since our community is rallying behind the idea. We try to keep a variety available for them to choose from. We feel this was an awesome way for us as an FFA chapter to truly continue to live to serve.

HOOK N CHASE Social Distancing

Until early March, I’m not sure I had ever heard the term social distancing. Not to be funny or make light of this horrible situation we are in, I just hadn’t heard or maybe never paid attention. I had to look up exactly what it meant. Here’s what I found. Social distancing is a measure taken to prevent the spread of a contagious disease by maintaining a physical distance and reduce the number of times people come in close contact with others.

You may ask what does this have to do with hunting and fishing articles? It’s easy. From days gone by in my youth on a red hill farm in Custer County in Western Oklahoma, I always wondered why I would always see wildlife that always appeared healthy. You very seldom seen a sick or old crippled wildlife of any kind. I would see the babies before they grew up, but even they appeared fast and healthy.

Then, the other day it dawned on me that Mother Nature has been practicing social distancing forever.

You may see turkeys in a flock, but you rarely see them touch. They roost in the trees spread out on different limbs and once they hit the ground, they spread out, feed and move along, separately.

Let’s think about the deer herds. A beautiful sight in the early morning is a small herd of deer spread out across a wheat field. It’s possible that days go by without a deer ever touching another deer in the herd.

about on the pond or lake seemingly to never touch.

From my fall deer stand, I always see squirrels scamper up and down the trees, and you never see one of them touch or ever running into each other.

My favorite wildlife, the bobwhite quail, which I hope we have a good spring for hatching, fly, spread out to feed on bugs or seeds while definitely keeping social distancing in mind. They do sleep together at night.

Quail roost on the ground most often they sleep with their heads pointed outward. Yes, that makes it easy for them to escape and fly, but somehow that seems like a form of social distancing.

We do know schools of fish gracefully swim through the water. Rarely will one of them ever touch another.

So, where am I going with all of this rambling?

I’m not sure I know. I am sure that the human race is a part of the animal kingdom and through the years, due to our population increase, we have less and less social distancing. Once again, it appears Mother Nature is on course. And once again, I think it’s time for me to do a little more social distancing, Or should I say a little more fishing and a little more turkey hunting!

We’re going to make it through this very unusual time. But, while we’re at it, let’s get outdoors. Let’s breathe some as God‘s beautiful air. Absorb some of his beautiful sunshine, and enjoy viewing, chasing, or just walking around observing Mother Nature at her finest.

Champion Hampshire Ram and Reserve Supreme Ram The Northern Oklahoma College Sheep Production and Management class attended the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo to exhibit the NOC Sheep Center Flock in the FWSSR Open Sheep Show. The students had a very successful day at the FWSSR as they exhibited the Reserve Hampshire Ewe, NOC 9066, the Champion Dorset Ewe, NOC 9008 and the Champion Hampshire Ram and Reserve Supreme Ram of the show, NOC 9129. TRENTON’S POST Hey guys! It’s me Trenton.

I just got done with OYE and it was kind of disappointing that the market show got canceled for this year. At least the people with breeding animals got to show.

Even though I didn’t get to show, I did get to go down for the breeding show and see a lot of my friends. We played football in the ring and then played some football and a little bit more football. And, I got in a game of basketball. I have some great friends.

Our Thank You Campaign that we did at OYE went for the longest that it could and we collected 253 thank you notes. Thank you to everyone that came by the Ag Youth booth. I also want to thank Tyler, Kass, Melissa and the OYE staff and supporters that kept OYE on for as long as it could. I sent the thank you notes to the OYE staff, OYE board, OALE students, Governor Stitt, and Secretary of Agriculture, Blayne Arthur.

There is always next year. Now, we just need to stay away from the coronavirus, and we can go fishing and get back to showing soon. It will come someday.

I’m going to go get my fishing pole and hit up my favorite spot! Peace out!
