By Tala Gillenwaters, Ag Youth Magazine Intern Stocks shows consist of early mornings where kids don’t want to get out of bed and getting the animals loaded up to head down the road. But, this morning was different. How different you may ask?

Kids helping other kids with special needs at a stock show.

The kids in agricultural education classes who have the opportunity to show animals are fortunate.

When these FFA leaders came and helped the special needs students, they felt like it made an impact on them and their FFA chapters.

Hagen Nielsen, second grader at Mooreland Elementary School, has Bruck Syndrome, which causes brittle bones and contracture joints in his knees. Until this summer, he was confined to a wheelchair. In July, he had surgery to help repair his leg bones so that he could learn to walk. He can now walk with the assistance of a walker but still uses his wheelchair for daily activities, which limits his physical activities. He was selected to participate in the Red Carpet Classic Show, which gave him the opportunity to show livestock like some of his friends do.

“Hagen had been looking forward to this show for weeks,” said Amanda Nielsen, Hagen’s mom.

“Anytime anyone would ask if he was busy, he would tell them he couldn’t do anything on January 8 because he had a stock show. It absolutely made his Page 10 - March 2020

day!”

Maggie Brown, Sharon-Mutual agricultural education instructor and show coordinator, said it was a great opportunity for FFA members and students with disabilities to come together.

“This show provided an opportunity for students with disabilities to experience a livestock show and the agriculture industry. Many of them have little to no experience with animals,” she said. “Second, it was a great opportunity for local FFA members to do community service and gain leadership skills. It also provided an opportunity for FFA members who do not show livestock to also experience this side of this organization and what a livestock show is all about.”

The FFA members taught those who were participating how to show the animal in the show ring.

The members had the animals washed, groomed, and ready.

“The boys who were paired with Hagen were so sweet and supportive. They made a huge impression on Hagen,” Nielsen said. “He will always remember this event.”

Not only did the students benefit from this, but also the FFA members who helped with the event.

“It was a great experience to help special needs kids to get the chance to show animals,” said Bracen Continued on Page 12

Lewis, Mooreland FFA chapter president. “We can sometimes take things like showing animals for granted and forget about how some people do not get these amazing experiences in their life. I do believe it helped us as a chapter become better leaders, and at the end of the day, it looked like everyone had a fun time.”

Small acts can make a huge impact on those around you. Helping others in need is just one way to make that impact.

“We are so thankful for events like these that make students with special needs feel like a superstar,” Nielsen said. “It was so great to see all of these children, who may not get an opportunity like this one, to have the chance to work with animals and their peers to succeed.”

Connors State College First Ever Fall on the Farm

By Taylynn Williamson,Connors State College On October 15, the Agriculture Division and Agriculture teams partnered with the community and school to host an event letting elementary students into the world of agriculture. Nearly 100 CSC students, faculty, staff, departments, FFA Chapters (Checotah, Warner, Oktaha, Stigler, Porum, Midway, Eufaula), Oklahoma associations (Soybean Commission, Quail and Pheasant, OSU Extension) and community members volunteered during the three rotations.

Warner Elementary, Checotah Elementary, Mounds Elementary, Eufaula Elementary, and Oktaha Elementary brought over 700 students, teachers, and parents to the indoor arena on Warner campus.

Twenty-six different stations showing the many industries involved in agriculture were set up for students to experience.

These activities included, but were not limited to, the beef industry, swine industry, equine industry, sheep industry, dairy industry, soybean industry, food nutrition, poultry industry, horseshoeing, quail and pheasant forever, apple art, paper quilt blocks, roping dummies, wagon rides, and chuck wagon tales.

We were delighted with this year’s turnout, and new ideas are prepared for this year’s event coming in October.

Our teams, local FFA chapters, and community supporters hope to continue educating today’s youth about agriculture and the significant impact it has.

HOOK N CHASE Fish Like Water

A former student of mine called recently and I quote, he said, “What is the difference between a lake and a pond and a creek and a river.”

I gave an answer, uneducated as it might be, but my original thought was, “Does it really matter? You can fish in them all. Fish Like Water.”

This question clouded the caverns of my mind as I traveled southeast Oklahoma down straight roads and winding trails to stock shows.

In the southeast, there is lots of water. I began to notice the highway signs. Eufaula Lake, Henrietta City Lake, Lake of the Arbuckle’s, McGee Creek Reservoir, Muddy Boggy Creek (bigger and deeper than any river out west), Canadian River, North Canadian River, Two Hatchet Creek.

They all look good for fishing, but what is the difference between a lake and reservoir, pond and lake, creek or crik or river?

Here’s what my research found…

•Lakes are large bodies of water surrounded by land.

•Ponds are small bodies of water naturally or by building.

•Reservoirs are large lakes used as a water supply •Creeks are small stream that flows to river.

•Rivers are natural flowing water flowing towards an ocean, sea, lake or into another river.

Now, I’m not as confused but, in my research, I did find out that they all require water and eastern Oklahoma definitely has a lot more water than the west. You folks in the Panhandle almost get left out. I know you have Lake Optima or is it a pond or puddle?

Never mind, fish like water. I like to fish so therefore I can fish in a stream, lake, pond, river, reservoir, ocean, sea anywhere that has water, whatever you wish to call it.

Let’s get this little thing called OYE over, and it’s time to drown a worm, wet a hook, throw a plug in something with water

TRENTON’S POST Hey guys! It’s me, Trenton.

We just got done with Christmas. My Christmas was awesome. I hope yours was, too. Basketball season is over and my team did good and had a lot of fun. We have now started track and archery.

It’s show time! County Fair went great. I love seeing my friends. Enid, my district, and OYE are coming up. If any of your guys see me, tell me hi or if you see me playing football at OYE, I can buzz you in.

I hope school is going good for all of you guys. It has been awesome for me.

Remember, keep good grades so you will be able to show your livestock. And, for everyone who plays sports, remember to keep cool, calm and collected.

And, leave everything out on the floor.

I almost forgot, fishing time is here. Summer is around the corner. I wish it could come faster. I hope to catch a lot of fish.

Howe FFA is giving back for the second year with a project they call “Refueling Santa’s Sleigh.”

The organization encourages their members to bring bottled water and snack items. They then made care packages with everything they receive.

FFA members take them to postal workers to help them keep their energy while working long, exhausting hours to deliver every package in time for Christmas.

More often than not, these men and women are not appreciated or noticed for the hard work they put in. These care packages are to let them know that their community loves them and that we appreciate the hard work they do everyday.

These care packages were donated to the Heavener, Howe and Poteau post offices, UPS, and FEDEX. Thank you to everyone that participated in “Operation Refueling Santa’s Sleigh!” agyouth.com

By Oklahoma 4-H NE District Representative Clayton Wallace “I pledge my head to clearer thinking, my heart to greater loyalty, my hands to larger service, and my health to better living, for my club, my community, my country, and my world.” To the Cherokee County 4-H members, this is more than just a pledge, it is a lifestyle they live out daily.

Last summer, when much of our state was devastated with flooding, county 4-Hers stepped up to the plate in a big way. The week before summer camp, the officer team issued a challenge to all 4-Hers in attendance to bring $5 for a fundraiser. With an average attendance of 100 youth, this challenge should have raised around $500. However 4-Hers in Cherokee County aren’t your average youth and in just three short days at summer camp, 4-H members raised $692.

Along with roughly $1,800 worth of in-kind donations, the Cherokee County OSU Extension office and county officer team were able to purchase much needed supplies, including canned foods, bottled water, soap, toothbrushes, cleaning supplies and much more, all of which were donated to a local flood relief site and distributed among flood victims in Gore, Webber’s Falls, and Fort Gibson.

“It’s really nice to know that we can help people through some of the toughest times of their lives.

These people have lost everything and we’re playing a small role in helping them get back to normal,” said Chloe Silka, Cherokee County 4-H’er. “I could never have Page 32 - March 2020

organized a fundraiser like this on my own, so it just shows how 4-H brings people together for greater reasons. When people come together, so much can be accomplished that wouldn’t be possible otherwise.”

During the interview, the officers talked about how Waynoka celebrates National FFA Week, some of the activities that our chapter does throughout the year and the responsibilities of each of their offices.

Alex Cox, McClain County 4-H educator, and her 4-H members recently won the 4-H division of the OSU Extension Success Story Contest for their project: Ballot Boxes.

For 25 years, McClain County 4-H has partnered with the local Election Board to provide the Ballot Boxes program at the McClain County Courthouse. Ballot Boxes is a night where 4-H’ers help all 26 precinct chairmen with their equipment when arriving at the courthouse.

Not only do the 4-H members get to see all the equipment involved in an election, but they also experience what happens behind the scenes after an election has occurred.

Through this civic engagement project, youth learn about the election process, the importance of being an active voter, build decision-making skills and develop a sense of understanding and confidence in relating and connecting to other people.

Kansas Students Participate in Taiwan Agricultural Youth Exchange

Jeffrey Garcia from Cassoday, a freshman at Butler Community College majoring in Agribusiness; and Katherine Sleichter from Clay Center, a freshman at Kansas State University majoring in agribusiness (international option), Global Food Systems Leadership, and minoring in Spanish traveled to Taiwan last fall.

Two Kansas students traveled to Taiwan Oct. 26-Nov. 3 to represent the state as part of a long-standing student exchange program to learn about Taiwan’s agricultural industry and how Kansas agriculture exports benefit both Kansas and Taiwan. The students were selected for the Taiwan Agricultural Youth Exchange Program by the Kansas Department of Agriculture (KDA) based on their exceptional leadership and communication skills, appreciation for international travel, and passion for Kansas agriculture.

“This exchange offers students an opportunity of a lifetime to experience another country’s agriculture, technology and culture,” said Suzanne Ryan-Numrich, international trade director at KDA. “The students who went on this exchange came home with a broader understanding of the global economy we live in.”

The two students who participated were Jeffrey Garcia from Cassoday, a freshman at Butler Community College majoring in Agribusiness; and Katherine Sleichter from Clay Center, a freshman at Kansas State University majoring in agribusiness (international option), Global Food Systems Leadership, and minoring in Spanish.

The students traveled with students from Missouri.

Their visit included tours of the National Chung Hsing University, interaction with Taiwanese students, meetings with the Taiwan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and visits to local farms and research institutes across Taiwan.

“It was interesting to me to see the difference between Page 60 - March 2020

Kansas agriculture and Taiwanese agriculture,” said Sleichter. “While in Taiwan we had the opportunity to tour a variety of different farming operations, specifically fruit farms. We toured a passion fruit farm, a dragon fruit farm, an organic tea farm, a guava farm, a tomato farm, and a cocoa farm. The farm tours opened my eyes to the diversity of agriculture, and that there is more than just the type of farms that are common in the United States.”

Garcia agreed that it was a great experience. “I really enjoyed trying all the new food and seeing how they grow all the fruit and vegetables they grow in Taiwan.”

The trip is coordinated by KDA and the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Denver, Colorado, and is sponsored by TECO. Opportunities such as the Taiwan Agricultural Youth Exchange Program provide tremendous knowledge and networking to the delegates. In 2018, Kansas exported over $167 million in agriculture commodities to Taiwan and it was the fifth-ranked export destination for Kansas products. International relationships with countries such as Taiwan help open opportunities for more exports in the future.

OSU Livestock Judging Team National Champion Oklahoma State University’s Livestock Judging Team earned top honors at the recent North American International Livestock Exposition’s renowned National Collegiate Livestock Judging Contest in Louisville, KY. “This accomplishment adds to the tradition of national championships awarded to OSU Livestock Judging Teams from the past,” said Dr. Blake Bloomberg, team coach and assistant professor of animal science. “In addition to the overall championship, our OSU team was also the contest’s high-scoring team in oral reasons, sheep and goats, swine and cattle.”

This is the 20th National Championship in livestock judging for Oklahoma State and the third national champion livestock judging team in a row at Oklahoma State University.

Team members are all OSU Animal Science majors.

Individual honors and recognition in the contest and within species were earned by: Kylie Patterson, a native of San Antonio, TX, earned first high individual honors overall. Kylie placed first in oral reasons, second in swine and sixth in cattle.

Dylan Enyart, a native of Vinita, OK, placed third in reasons, sixth in sheep/goats and finished as the contest’s third high individual overall Ryan Gifford, a native of Eagle Point, OR, placed third Page 74 - March 2020

in sheep and goats, seventh in oral reasons and was the contest’s fourth high individual overall Kash Allen, a native of Bunch, OK, finished as the 10th high individual overall.

Chase Ratliff, a native of Westphalia, KS, placed first in performance cattle, first in cattle reasons, second in cattle, second in oral reasons and finished as 12th high individual overall.

By Erika Meier, Shattuck FFA Reporter What better way to get FFA members involved and educated than a CDE contest? On January 21, Shattuck FFA hosted a CDE contest at the Woodward County Events Center and Fairgrounds for surrounding FFA chapters. This contest was designed as an introductory contest for 8th, 9th & 10th graders to compete in various career development events.

Area FFA chapters in the Woodward, Alva and Panhandle regions were invited.

Over 300 students, from Ellis, Harper, Dewey, Woodward & Major counties competed in 13 different career development event areas. Those CDE areas were as follows: Ag Communications, Ag Mechanics, Agronomy, Dairy Products, Electricity, Entomology, Farm Business Management, Floriculture, Food Science, Land, Meats, Natural Resources & Vet Science. The members could compete in as many areas as they wanted, furthering their knowledge on that specific CDE area.

The Shattuck FFA juniors and seniors worked to setup the contests, write tests and tabulate scores. The Shattuck FFA officer team handed out awards to high placing individuals and teams.

This contest was a success as the members learned more about each CDE area and everything went smoothly and effectively. The age group which this contest was designed for is the future of agriculture, so it is important to prepare them for the next years of their FFA and agriculture involvement.
