Rotor loss in Corn, Soy beans & Wheat on all John Deere STS combines happens because of an over-loaded separation section. I introduced “The Disrupter”, (14 lugs bolted into the two front separation grates), in the summer of 2010 and the response was tremendous. (Disrupter lugs cut up corn shucks, green bean stems, & wheat straw). We have over 600 sets in operation. But the rotor loss problem still exists with 8 row and 12 row corn heads. The separation section in the JD STS, (in my opinion) is not large enough nor open enough to get 8 rows let alone 12 rows through without sacrificing a lot of ground speed. Corn, soy beans & wheat thrash completely over the first 1 & 1/2 round bar concaves, but very little separation will happen over the back half of the concave sections due to the small space between the remaining round bars. (5/8 inch)

I have designed a concave/grate that has 1/2” sq bars with 1 1/4” opening between. The new concave/grate will replace the rear concave on all of the STS machines. The 1/2” Square bars plus the 1 1/4 space between the bars will increase material volume flow by 68%. The more crop volume you can get out of the concave section, the less has to be separated over the grate section.

NCBA Commends Administration for Walking Away From Proposing Burdensome Transportation Regulations WASHINGTON – National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) Manager of Legislative Affairs Kent Bacus said the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) made the right decision to walk away from proposing additional transportation regulations on America’s farmers and ranchers. Bacus said that proposing additional regulations would have resulted in new financial and regulatory burdens without providing significant improvements to the safety and efficiency of transportation. “The safety of cattle, equipment and other pedestrians on roads is a priority for cattlemen. That is why farmers and ranchers invest time and financial resources to ensure their equipment meets all current transportation standards,” Bacus said. “We were concerned that the questions raised by DOT failed to recognize the diversity within production agriculture and would have imposed unnecessary, burdensome regulations on cattlemen without providing significant improvements to a safe and efficient transportation system. We commend DOT for recognizing that new regula-

Water Grass What Is It? Noel Mues, Extension Educator University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Extension Furnas County You say, "water grass." I say, "What is it?" Take a poll at your coffee shop and you will get wildly different descriptions for water grass. Numerous grassy weed species are called water grass. It may not seem like a big deal but proper identification is key to controlling grassy weeds in lawns. Several annual grasses that are often referred to as “water grass” include crabgrass, foxtail, barnyard grass, goose grass, grassy sandbur, and fall panicum. First of all, the best way to prevent weeds from invading your lawn is through proper lawn care practices which encourage a dense stand of vigorous grass. Weeds get a clear invitation anytime turf is opened up due to traffic next to sidewalks, poor growing conditions or improper management practices. For example, lawns mowed higher (over 2 inches) tend to have fewer problems with annual grasses such as crabgrass. Closely mowed lawns tend to become open, allowing weed invasions. Light, frequent watering also favors crabgrass. It often invades areas seeded in late spring because of bare soil, frequent watering, and onset of hot weather, ideal for its growth. Ideally, new lawns should be seeded in fall. If you have a gray-green colored grass which is growing during early spring with white fleshy rhizomes then it is probably quackgrass. Fortunately for us, quackgrass isn’t that common in our area but it is one of the most difficult weeds to control in lawns and flowerbeds in eastern Nebraska. Tall fescue can also appear as a weed in Kentucky bluegrass lawns. It is a clump grass with a wide leaf blade. This tall fescue is the pasture type and not one of the more desirable turf-type tall fescues. Quackgrass and tall fescue are both cool season grasses so they start to green up the same time as Kentucky bluegrass. A couple of warm season grassy weeds that can be serious problems in lawns are windmill grass and nimblewill. Windmill grass is a warm season, native, perennial that shows up during late summer. It has pale green (light blue-gray) leaves and reproduces by seeds and rooting at the lower nodes. Preferred growing conditions are full sun and dry barren soil containing gravel or sand. Nimblewill is most noticeable during early spring as a straw colored patch that greens as the weather warms then goes straw colored early in the fall. more Quackgrass, tall fescue, windmill grass, and nimblewill are perennials which mean the same plant comes back every year, bringing its family of seedlings and/or rhizomes with it. There aren't any selective herbicides available to home gardeners to kill these perennial weeds and not kill your desirable grass. Conventional crabgrass controls will not control these perennial grasses. You have three options: either thoroughly dig it out; spot treat it with a non-selective herbicide such as glyphosate sold as Round Up or Kleen Up; or live with it and only look at
your lawn through your car windshield. After the weed is dead or removed, the area may need to be reseeded or resodded. Crabgrass is an annual that comes back every year from seed, so it germinates from late April through May. It germinates when soil temperatures are greater than 55 to 60 degrees F for 7-10 consecutive days, and continues until soils reach 95 degrees F. Several other annual grasses germinate later as soils warm. If a herbicide is desired to control crabgrass, it is usually a preemergence herbicide which keeps annual grassy weeds such as crabgrass from emerging. Timing of application is very important. The preemergence herbicide for crabgrass should be applied in our area from mid to late April.
Since crabgrass preventer works against annual grasses, it will also control other unwanted grasses such as foxtail, goose grass, grassy sandbur, fall panicum, and barnyard grass. A second application of preemergence herbicide in mid to late June will be beneficial for controlling many of these annual grasses. Do not use preemergence control if you plan on also reseeding the lawn in the spring. Only one preemergence herbicide, siduron (Tupersan) is labeled for application to newly seeded areas. All others have a waiting period. Be sure to read, understand and follow all pesticide label directions. Just remember that if all these control measures fail you can say, "at least my lawn’s green most of the time."

While three local high school graduates learned a lot this summer about dry edible bean varieties, they also gained a lot of general knowledge that will help them in their chosen fields of study. Much of what they learned from working with Dr. Carlos Urrea, dry bean breeding specialist at the University of Nebraska Panhandle Research and Extension Center, can be applied to other careers. Charity Burkey and Danni Becker began working with Urrea after they graduated from Scottsbluff High School this summer. Burkey plans to study Agri Business, and Becker is looking at a career involving biology, most likely as a veterinarian. Scout Wilson, a third student, worked with Urrea during the summer of 2010, and returned this summer as an undergraduate student after graduating from Gering High School earlier this summer. All three are enrolled in the BeanCAP program, which is designed to interest students in careers in dry bean development. They agree that the program is very worthwhile. It provides money and an unparalleled learning experience for students in this region. They get to work with an internationally recognized bean breeder, whose fine-tuned teaching skills impress his three students. "He's a great hands-on boss," Becker said last Tuesday morning, standing in a field of beans where they were taking the temperatures of bean leaves as part of a
study on drought tolerance. "We learned a lot about varieties, gave the plants diseases, and learned to identify and scale the amount of disease in the plants." Burkey said she has learned a lot about what goes on behind the crops she sees in the fields as she drives by. "There's a lot more going into it," Burkey said, standing next to Becker with a leaf thermometer in her hand. "We learned about the genetics involved, and I give myself more credit for doing all of this labor. And we have great bosses -- Carlos and John (Thomas, research technician). It's great when the boss enjoys his work." For his part, Wilson said he continues to learn more than he expected. By continuing in the BeanCAP program this fall and into next spring, he will get to see almost the entire cycle from the genetics to the harvest and the data processing that goes on in the lab. "We learn quite a bit, and enjoy it," he said, waiting for Urrea to return for another inspection of pods that are setting on the plants in the drought tolerance study. "What I've learned, like open pollination, I could apply to another crop, so I'm not sure what I'll do. Maybe I'll take some botany classes. "Right now I understand more about the whole scheme of everything, but this is just the first stepping stone," he said. Wilson encourages other students, either high school or college, to look into the program. "But you have to be serious," he cautioned. "There are things you need to know, to do this, but Carlos is a great teacher and he explains every step."
Burkey especially likes not having to spend so much time in a classroom, and being able to work outside. "I never wanted a cubicle job," she said, holding the leaf thermometer out so she could read the digital numbers in the sunshine. "I really appreciate this experience," Becker said, her head down, recording numbers given by Burkey. "I feel like I actually accomplished something, and I've learned skills I can use in the future. Besides learning to count real well," she added with a laugh, thinking about the more than 800,000 beans the trio counted at the beginning of the season. The impact of knowing that what they have worked on all summer will generate information when tests are conducted in Puerto Rico on the same varieties is especially impressive, she said. The whole picture was made more visible through the presence of Angela Lineras, a Ph.D. student with Urrea, who has spent time this summer working on another part of the drought tolerance project. She will use the data in her doctoral research. All of the students will soon be back in classrooms, but they agree that what they learned through the program and from the silent beans has been very rewarding. NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) and the Quality Deer Management Association (QDMA) renewed their collaborative commitment to enhance habitat for white-tailed deer and other wildlife with the signing of a cooperative agreement today during QDMA's 11th Annual National Convention. The agreement was signed by Bruce Nelson, FSA Administrator, and Brian Murphy, QDMA Chief Executive Officer. "FSA and QDMA share mutual conservation interests in ensuring the future of white-tailed deer, wildlife habitat and our hunting heritage," Nelson said. "Whitetailed deer are an iconic species of America's great outdoors and protecting this habitat will help preserve the species for future generations." FSA-administered programs, such as those funded through the Commodity Credit Corporation (CCC), like the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) and the Voluntary Public Access and Habitat Incentive Program (VPA-HIP), are designed to conserve soil, protect water quality and enhance wildlife habitat. The VPA-HIP provides incentives to encourage farmers, ranchers and forest landowners to open their land for public
access to hunting, fishing and other wildlifedependent recreational activities. Conservation covers established through both CRP and VPA-HIP promote plant diversity, an important aspect of deer habitat. Quality deer habitat includes a mixture of trees, shrubs, grasses, forbs and other plants such as fungi and sedges. Today's announcement is part of a broader USDA effort to support conservation and restoration of important habitats for wildlife. Also today, USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Service announced that more than 150 Northern Plains farmers and ranchers have applied for a new initiative designed to enhance migratory bird habitat, improve water quality and the health of grasslands in the Prairie Pothole Region of Iowa, Minnesota, Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota. Additionally, FSA announced that it has approved the reallocation of 153,972 acres available through the Conservation Reserve Program initiative entitled State Acres for Wildlife Enhancement, to conserve and restore critical habitat for lesser prairie chickens, sage and sharp-tailed grouse, and other grassland, sage or prairie-dependent species in eight states.
White-tailed deer are found throughout the lower 48 states and parts of Canada and Mexico. It is estimated that there are 30 million white-tailed deer in the U.S. Deer hunting is part of the social framework of many rural families and is enjoyed by millions of Americans annually. Sportsmen expenditures are a significant contributor to the economy of many rural communities. Quality deer management is a science based approach to producing deer herds with appropriate adult sex ratios in balance with their habitat in order to develop buck age structures which include middle and older age class individuals. This approach requires habitat, herd and hunter management, and constant monitoring. QDMA is the leading proponent of quality deer management. QDMA is a 501-c (3) non-profit wildlife conservation organization whose 50,000 members are found throughout the 50 states, Canada and several other countries. General objectives of QDMA include research, education, advocacy and certification of both individuals and land. QDMA membership includes 2,500 wildlife resource professionals. It is estimated that QDMA members own or control and practice quality deer management on approximately 20 million acres of land.

Experiments on the rooting propagation has found plants irrigated with FRE-FLOTM conditioned water develop far faster with much healthier root systems than those irrigated with non-treated water. The picture below shows a comparison with the FRE-FLOTM treated plant on the right. In another test, the speed of rooting was compared in FRE-FLOTM conditioned water (shown in green) and untreated water as a control (in red). After 10 weeks none of the untreated plants had initiated roots, while a third of those growing in FRE-FLOTM conditioned water, had started roots. After 12 weeks FRE-FLOTM produced 58% rooting, with only 8% in the untreated water.

DURANGO, Colo. (AP) _ The Colorado Department of Transportation is adding wildlife detectors to the safety improvements it is making to U.S. Highway 550 south of Durango. Four wildlife escape ramps and five deer guards similar to cattle guards are also being added. According to the Durango Herald, an underground cable will emit an electromagnetic field that becomes disrupted when large animals such as deer, elk and horses cross the highway. The system then activates electronic signs to warn motorists that wildlife is near the road.
Plane Lands in Soybean Field South of Waterloo WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) _ A pilot suffered minor cuts and bruises when his experimental plane made an emergency landing in a field of soybeans south of Waterloo. Steve Hendryx, of Mt. Auburn, says he heard something snap while flying Sunday afternoon. Hendryx says he looked for a place to land and quickly came down in the field. His plane nosed over onto its top as it stopped. The Federal Aviation Administration will investigate the accident. Hendryx says he and another man have spent the past eight years building the single-engine plane. He says it can carry four people.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) _ Kansas Congressman Tim Huelskamp says Vietnam's ambassador to the United States joined him on a tour of a swine farm in the north-central part of the state. The visit was Aug. 24 at the Brylin Farm near Washington, followed by lunch at First National Bank in Washington. Huelskamp says he discussed the trade relationship between the U.S. and Vietnam and how the two nations can strengthen their economic ties. Huelskamp is a Republican serving his first term in the U.S. House. He represents the 1st Congressional District, which covers western, central and north-central Kansas.
Bighorn Sheep Transplants Proposed for Montana BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) _ Montana wildlife officials are proposing to transplant bighorn sheep into three areas in the southwestern portion of the state as part of an effort to restore the animals to their historical habitat. If the proposal is approved by the state Fish, Wildlife and Parks Commission, bighorn sheep would be captured from other sites in Montana and moved to release sites possibly as soon as this winter. The areas that would receive sheep are the Bull Mountains near Whitehall, Lewis and Clark Caverns State Park, and Doherty Mountain, which is just north of the caverns. Officials say the three areas could support 200 to 300 sheep. A public comment period on the proposal is open through Sept. 12.
Demand Has US Looking to Expand Canola Crop DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) _ The demand for canola, best known for the cooking oil it produces, continues to rise and the industry is working to grow more of the plant in the U.S. to keep pace with increased sales. Experts said the best hope for meeting demand is to grow a variety of canola that is planted in the fall and harvested in the spring, offering farmers in some regions a chance to make use of their land during a normally dormant period. Most of the nation's canola crop is a spring variety, planted in the spring and harvested in late summer or early fall. About 90 percent of U.S. canola is grown in North Dakota, but by growing more winter canola, industry officials believe canola acres in the U.S. could more than triple. ``There is no reason we couldn't see 4 to 5 million acres planted from the Carolinas to the Great Plains,'' said Dale Thorenson, assistant director of the U.S. Canola Association. Brian Jenks, a professor at North Dakota State University, said the country needs to keep pace with the growing demand for canola, which is seen as healthier than oils containing more saturated fat. ``We grow about 1.5 million acres in the U.S. and that is not enough to satisfy demand so we have to import a lot of canola from Canada,'' he said.

Sustainable Practices Like Recycling: Could Colleges and Universities be Role Models? For the very first time in the history of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, this year's summer graduates wore a "green" gown for their commencement exercises. The gown is made from sustainably harvested wood pulp, with zippers made from 100 percent recycled plastics. Practices like these are a step in a positive direction, suggesting colleges and universities could become leaders in sustainable practices, as well as in ensuring that the curriculum used in helping form the education obtained by students includes sustainability principles. Recently, a non-profit group, the Sustainable Endowments Institute, reviewed sustainable practices of 300 colleges and universities in the United States and published a College Sustainability Report Card 2011, available at: http://www.greenreportcard.org/ The University of Nebraska-Lincoln earned an overall grade of C (down from C+ in 2010), ranking 11th out of 12 among the Big Ten schools, with the University of Iowa being last. Creighton University, the only other Nebraska college or university graded in the report, had an overall score of B-. Such profiles show substantive potential for future progress. In addition to shifting to renewable energy sources, sustainability is also served by addressing the fact that we never truly are able to actually “get rid of” anything, but rather we just change the form of it. It is still with us, even if buried in the landfill or otherwise deposited into the environment in water or air pollution. As a result, recycling practices in general need attention. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reports that in the year 2009 (the year of latest data availability), Americans generated about 243 million tons of trash, with individual waste generation of 4.34 pounds per person per day. The EPA estimates that commercial and institutional waste, which includes schools, colleges and universities, contributes 35 to 45 percent of the total Municipal Solid Waste (MSW). Through recycling and composting 82 million tons of the total MSW (34 percent recycling rate), were saved from ending up in landfill sites. This translates into huge energy savings as well as an annual benefit of 178 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions reduced, comparable to the annual GHG emissions (and related energy use) from more than 33 million passenger vehicles. The management of municipal solid waste is primarily the responsibility of state and local jurisdictions. The importance of recycling was recognized in the Nebraska Litter Reduction and Recycling Act of 1979, which called for the implementation of a compre-
hensive litter and recycling program throughout the state, and the rapid development of technologically and economically feasible operational projects for the recovery of energy and resources. The later Nebraska Litter Reduction and Recycling Incentive Act of 1994 stated that, “Recycling and waste reduction are necessary components of any well managed waste management system and can extend the lifespan of a landfill and provide alternative waste management options.” Yet there are no mandates, with recycling still strictly a voluntary effort, which also means that recycling is at the discretion of Nebraska’s colleges and universities. While this need not be the main reason for doing so, for most colleges and universities recycling can actually reduce costs of handling wastes. A comparative analysis of recycling programs in three universities: University of Oregon, University of Colorado–Boulder and University of Nebraska–Lincoln, showed that the average net costs for recycling were $22-$122 less per ton than costs for waste disposal (Jones, 2010). This finding is on par with similar findings conducted at household levels by a number of researchers – the net recycling costs are typically less than landfill disposal costs. Yet there may be even more substantive reasons for colleges and universities to be engaged in sustainable practices like recycling. Colleges and universities are places for higher learning, embracing the need to constantly seek excellence in teaching, research and service. These entities are also often the primary intellectual and cultural resource for the city, state and nation. As the community struggles to find solutions to problems in their daily lives, they look for leadership in the university community to suggest and provide them with science based assistance. As noted earlier – we as individuals produce 4.34 lbs. solid waste per day amounting to 243 million tons in a year. These consumption habits can have serious repercussions unless recycling is addressed, especially regarding the amount of energy (which cannot be recycled), spent in and the GHG emissions associated with, the process. It follows that it may well be an important mission of the university to seek excellence in sustainability education, research and service. Colleges and universities can play a lead role, demonstrating the unique opportunities in which waste reduction and recycling enhancements are possible. Also, when one actively engages in recycling activity on campus, especially during such things as concerts, theatre and sporting events (e.g. football, volleyball, etc.), the individual participant becomes aware of sustainability prac-
tices that he/she can employ at their own individual levels, while potentially getting a “warm-glow” in return. Research conducted with respect to Nebraska households and their recycling choices suggests the drivers go well beyond financial incentives and ease of recycling (Kalinowski, Lynne and Johnson, 2006). While the latter are important, generally what distinguishes those who put substantial effort into recycling and those who do less of it is best described in the notion of “joining in unity with cause.” Much like Nebraska football fans join and participate in “Husker Nation,” they could also join in a cause like “Game Day Challenge," where Big Ten Universities could compete to see who recycles the most intensely during home football games. A college or university can serve as a great place to teach and learn about sustainable practices such as recycling. Recycling is a powerful example of how we can “think globally and act locally” to address larger energy and waste management problems that we share. There is only one Earth, and recycling gives us a substantive way to address its longterm capacity to sustain life. U.S. Grains Council Hosts Sorghum Export Mission to Africa, Europe (LINCOLN, NE) – A delegation of U.S. sorghum industry representatives recently traveled to Morocco, Spain and Belgium as the U.S. Grains Council continues their efforts in developing sorghum markets abroad. Morocco grain buyers began importing sorghum two years ago as a result of export missions hosted by the Council that have connected end-users with industry representatives to help them learn more about sorghum. As of July 28, U.S. sorghum sales to Morocco total 112,000 metric tons (4.4 million bushels) for the current market year. Moroccan purchases totaled 98,000 tons (3.9 million bushels) in the 2009/2010 market year. The latest sales are part of a regular pattern that has taken place since the team visits. While in Morocco, the delegation met with grain buyers, feed millers and poultry and dairy operations that have recently started utilizing U.S. sorghum. Nebraska Grain Sorghum Board Chairman John Dvoracek, from Farwell, was a part of the delegation along with other growers representing Kansas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and South Dakota.
“It is important that we as an industry continue to foster these international relationships,” Dvoracek said. “The increased sorghum purchases from Morocco are a clear example of the success we are having in developing markets overseas. It is clear that Moroccan end users are seeing the value in using sorghum, and this market continues to provide opportunities for growers in the U.S.” While in Spain, the delegation toured two major European ports in Tarragona and Malaga that play a vital role in the importation of U.S. sorghum and other grains into Europe. Spain is the second largest importer of U.S. sorghum, and will remain a major player in sorghum export markets. Following visits in Morocco and Spain, the delegation met with European Union officials in Brussels, Belgium, to confirm that a yearlong effort to resolve an obsolete provision in the EU tariff regulations that has hindered U.S. sorghum sales to Europe. The EU levy system had been using incorrect data when establishing a reference price for sorghum. As a result, the levy on U.S. sorghum inched up, pushing sorghum prices in Europe higher than the price of corn on occasion.
“With the recent adjustment of the sorghum import levy in the European Union, timing was right for this delegation to meet with the European Agricultural Commission in Brussels,” said Cary Sifferath, USGC regional director for the Mediterranean and Africa. “The Sorghum Checkoff and the Council have been working with the Commission to establish a more transparent process for the sorghum levy. This is a big success and a crucial foothold to future and increased imports of U.S. sorghum in the area.” Sorghum representatives on the mission were sorghum growers Bill Greving, of Prairie View, Kan., Kansas Grain Sorghum Commission; Jerry Van Zee, of Pierre, S.D., United Sorghum Checkoff Program; John Dvoracek of Farwell, Neb., Nebraska Grain Sorghum Board; Jeff Rutledge of Newport, Ark., Arkansas Corn and Grain Sorghum Board; and Brad Brainard of Enid, Okla., Oklahoma Sorghum Commission; David Thomas of New Deal, Texas, National Sorghum Producers; Benjamin Smith of Amarillo, Texas, Attebury Grain; and Lindsay Kennedy, external affairs director, United Sorghum Checkoff Program.
