Drop in land values a driving factor in estimate for lower production costs by Gordon Wolf Authors of an Iowa State University (ISU) Extension publication anticipate that the cost of producing corn and soybeans in Iowa will be less in 2015, but cautioned that many factors will cause costs to vary. The publication, “Estimated Costs of Crop Production in Iowa – 2015,” which was released this week, is a tool to help farmers determine their potential crop costs per acre and per bushel, according to a release from ISU Extension. Tillage practices, machinery, inputs, labor and land are among the crop cost factors that are considered in the calculations. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Economist Alejandro Plastina told Iowa Farm and Ranch that whether a producer sees a decline in the cost of crop production in 2015 will depend on the cash rent or cash rent equivalent. “We are seeing that our estimates for 2015 are slightly lower than in 2014, but that is really depending on our assumptions that tenants can renegotiate land rents from five to seven percent lower compared to 2014,” he said. Plastina explained that land values, in general, declined substantially, an average of eight percent. “We’ve heard of many producers who have renegoti-
ated their rents around that percentage, some more than five percent, some less than five percent, and others are still renegotiating their cash rents,” he said. Plastina added, though, that his concern is if a producer isn’t able to renegotiate his or her cash rent, then they probably won’t see a decline in the cost of production. He continued it is important for producers to find their break-even point. “These are just the guidelines for the average farm,” Plastina said, explaining that operators of very small or very large farm will have different findings. He also said it is important for producers to use the final column in each table of the “Estimated Costs of Crop Production in Iowa – 2015,” which is reserved for the producer’s estimates. “That is there for the producer to use,” Plastina said. “That is the whole idea. We’re trying to guide and trying to help the producer to find his or her break-even point.” The goal, of course, is to help producers with their marketing plan. “Once they know the break-even point, they can plan on selling part of their production when the price is close to the break-even point,” said Plastina. “If they (the producers) don’t know their break-even point, it’s just a guesstimate of what the break-even
point is,” he added. “Given the not-so-bright outlook in prices, when the price gets close to the break-even point, it would be smart to sell part of your production at that price. It is best to be conservative and make sure you cover most of your costs.” In addition to the value of land as the main driver in the estimate that production costs will be less in 2015, other factors are also pushing costs down. Lower fuel costs help reduce machinery costs and the cost of crop insurance is estimated to be less because of lower prices. Plastina said the costs for seed and chemicals are about the same or slightly higher, while labor costs are flat. Even with the slightly lower production costs predicted, producers can still expect tighter margins, Plastina said. The declining prices are much bigger than the declining costs, he pointed out. “It’s important to highlight the need for a good, strategic marketing plan, because margins will be squeezed,” Plastina said. In a press release, Steve Johnson, farm management specialist with ISU Extension and Outreach, said a drop in the crop cost estimates is expected for both corn and soybean production in Iowa. Johnson explained in the January 2015 issue of “Ag Decision Maker” how the crop production estimates are presented: “The 2015 Iowa Crop Cost Estimates bar chart indicates the 2015 cost estimates for three different crop rotation options assuming conventional tillage practices and medium-yield expectations. Total costs are expected to decline from 2014 by one to two percent depending on the crop planted.” The cost estimates represent average costs for farms in Iowa, and very large or small farms may have lower or higher fixed costs per acre, the Extension release said. The January issue of “Ag Decision Maker” listed the
following estimates: • The total cost for soybeans after corn rotation is expected to decline by 2 percent with the cost per bushel projected at $10.96 • Total costs for corn after soybeans rotation and a corn after corn rotation are expected to drop by 1 percent, with the costs per bushel projected at $4.23 and $4.93, respectively. • Cash rent equivalent estimates for medium- and high-grade land are estimated to decline by 5 percent. • Rents for lower-grade land are projected to drop by 7 percent. • Machinery operating costs are estimated to decline by 7 percent, driven by an expected 17 percent decline in diesel fuel prices and a 9 percent drop in liquid propane gas. • Lower crop futures prices will result in lower crop insurance revenue guarantees and therefore lower insurance premiums. • The cost of seed corn is estimated to be 2 percent higher, while the cost of fertilizer and lime for corn
production is estimated to increase by 6 percent. • Herbicide costs are up slightly from the 2014 projections. • The cost of soybean seed in 2015 is projected at 8 percent higher for the GMO varieties, at $55 per acre, but 2 percent lower for non-GMO varieties, at $41.80. • Fertilizer and lime costs for soybean production are expected to rise at 4 percent for both types of seed varieties. • Herbicide costs for the GMO varieties are projected to increase more than for the non-GMO varieties. Other notes from “Estimated Costs of Crop Production in Iowa – 2015”: • The data does not include the costs of storage, only production costs. • Labor was treated as a fixed cost. • Corn yields reflect rotation effects. • Machinery costs reflect both new and used equipment. • Estimates represent typical costs and are only intended to be guidelines.
Cellulosic ethanol enters the stage From Omaha World-Herald News Service After years of anticipation, cellulosic ethanol production has taken a major step forward, with Iowa leading the way. Plants in Iowa in 2014 became the first to produce cellulosic ethanol on a commercial scale. Production was centered at the Quad County Corn Processors plant in Galva and the POET-DSM Advanced Biofuels plants in Emmetsburg. Meanwhile, DuPont has plans to open a $225 million cellulosic ethanol plant in Nevada later this year. The advantage provided by cellulosic production is that it maximizes the conversion of corn byproducts and other inedible plant products into fuel. “More ethanol out of the same kernel of corn,” said Delayne Johnson, CEO of Quad County Corn Processors. Iowa’s ethanol sector is the nation’s largest, with the state’s 43 ethanol refineries having an annual capacity of some 3.8 billion gallons. The cellulosic component, just 22 million gallons at present, is small but growing. Iowa has 12 biodiesel facilities with an annual capacity of almost 315 million gallons. In Nebraska, the state’s 24 ethanol plants have a capacity exceeding 2 billion gallons. The facilities provide direct full-time employment for around 3,000 Nebraskans. How much cellulosic production can expand isn’t clear, given the current uncertainty over what federal regulators may do in regard to the mandated amount of renewable fuels in the nation’s energy supply. A pullback in the current mandate would likley have a negative effect on the types of ethanol production. The Iowa Corn Growers Association notes that the nation’s ethanol output of about 13.3 billion gallons in 2013 meant the United States required 476 million fewer barrels of imported oil. Education and showcations The number of people who haven’t been around animals in their lives who randomly decide to sit down and watch a cattle show or walk through the cattle barn never ceases to amaze me. My sons’ calves were at the end of the cattle area by the horses when we were in Denver at the National Western Show last week. Because of this, the animals had a lot of people checking them out and wanting to touch them. It was so bad that my little

kid was concerned that people would mess up his heifer’s hair on show day, so we had to make a sign telling people not to touch on that day. My husband and son thought that we should just put “Please don’t touch” on the sign, but I added a couple lines: “It’s Show Day!” “Please don’t touch my calf!” “We’re making her pretty for the judge.” “You know how girls get when their hair isn’t just right.”

After he showed the heifer the first time in the youth division, he put her back in the stall to wait for the second time in for open class. I watched a few people read the sign, laugh, and take a picture of it. But nobody touched her. After the big kid’s calf was washed and dried, but not yet finished, a little boy walked by and wanted to touch her. The big kid escorted the boy up to the front of the calf where he stood with a huge smile on his face and petted the calf NEW

for awhile. His mom took a picture, and told me that his “lifelong dream” was to pet a calf. Wow! I can’t imagine living in a place where my kids dream of seeing and petting a calf. I grew up spending time on my grandparents’ farms. On one farm, I helped with chicken chores, and on the other I sometimes helped with sheep chores. I love the 10 minutes the kids are actually in the ring showing their calves, but I do not like a lot of other stuff about the “showcations” we have, including the dirty cattle barn, the flying shards of hay from the fans, the cloud of hair products on show day, which all contribute to an inability to breathe through my nose. However, I do see them as a great opportunity to teach these random people who walk through the barn and sit down to watch the show. A young family sat beside me, as I was waiting for one of my sons to

show, and asked me questions. Luckily, I pay attention so I can answer the simple questions they ask. Cook’s Corner Mediterranean Stuffed Chicken
Baked Potato Cupcakes
Ingredients 2 tbsp olive oil ½ cup chopped onion 1 cup diced tomatoes 1 tsp minced garlic 1 6 oz. bag baby spinach 1 cup part-skim, shredded Mozzarella cheese ¼ cup shredded Parmesan cheese 4 boneless, skinless medium chicken breast halves (approx. 1.5 lbs) 2 tsp Italian seasoning blend ½ cup low-sodium chicken broth Instructions 1. Heat oil over medium heat in a nonstick skillet. Add onion and cook, stirring until onions are tender, about 5 minutes. Stir in tomatoes and garlic. Add spinach, cover and cook for about 3 minutes until spinach is soft. Remove from heat. Let mixture cool slightly; stir in Mozzarella and Parmesan. 2. Heat oven to 375°. Beginning in the center of the thicker end of the breast, insert a small knife horizontally, stopping about 1 inch from opposite end. Open incision to create a 1-inch-wide pocket and pack ¼ of the filling mixture into each breast. 3. Season chicken with Italian seasoning blend and place in 13 x 9 x 2-inch baking dish. Pour broth over chicken. Cover loosely with foil and bake for 40 minutes; keep warm until served. Recipe found at DairyMakesSense.com.
Ingredients 5 large russet potatoes, skins on, cut into quarters 1 cup diced Cheddar or Colby Jack cheese 1 tablespoon unsalted butter 3 large eggs, beaten ¼ teaspoon black pepper ¼ teaspoon salt Cooking spray Instructions 1. Place cut potatoes in a large pot and just cover with water. Bring to a boil, then gently boil until potatoes are tender, about 15 -20 minutes. Drain. 2. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. 3. Add potatoes to a large bowl and mash well. Mix in cheese and butter. Add in eggs, pepper and salt; mix until thoroughly incorporated. 4. Spray muffin tins with cooking spray. Divide potato mix among 15 muffins cups, filling them as high as you would like them to be when they are baked because they will not rise in the oven. 5. Bake until golden brown on top, about 40-45 minutes. Remove from oven and cool on rack for 10 minutes before removing from pan. Survey finds Americans worried DNA may be in their food by Randy Krehbiel, Omaha World-Herald News Service As anyone with a passing knowledge of biology should know, deoxyribonucleic acid, DNA, is present in every living thing, from single-cell algae to blue whales. DNA is the genetic code that makes beef beef and arugula arugula. This, apparently, does not reassure the 80 percent of respondents in a recent poll who answered in the affirmative when asked if they favored “mandatory labels on food containing DNA.” “I don’t interpret this as a deeply held belief,” said Jayson Lusk, regents
professor of agricultural economics at Oklahoma State University and the author of the survey, “but I think it does speak a little bit about a lack of knowledge of biology and biotechnology.” For about two years, Lusk and research specialist Susan Murray have overseen a national survey that focuses mostly on consumer habits and expectations concerning meat. The survey asks how much respondents are willing to pay for different items such as steak, chicken breasts and pork chops, measures concerns about such things as genetically modified
foods, called GMOs, E. coli, salmonella and hormones, and whether they support a list of current or proposed policies. “About 95 percent of the survey is the exact same every time,” said Lusk. The other five percent is what Lusk calls “ad hoc” questions usually asked only once. January’s ad hoc questions included the one about DNA. “I didn’t think a whole lot about it,” said Lusk. “I’ve been accused of some nefarious scheme to undermine GMO labeling, but ... I didn’t put any deep thought into it at all.” GMO labeling is a con-
tentious issue in some quarters. A lot of people are suspicious of genetically engineered food, although it has never been shown to be a health risk. Ballot initiatives in four states have sought mandatory labeling for GMO products, but all have failed. “I wasn’t even thinking about GMOs,” said Lusk. The survey’s more than 1,000 respondents were asked about support for various policies, from a tax on sugary drinks (61 percent opposed) to mandatory country-of-origin labels on meat (87 percent support). Lusk said he thinks the
results reflect “an initial gut reaction, and perhaps

Impact of energy policy topic at renewable fuels summit The Iowa Renewable Fuels Association (IRFA) announced that a panel of political experts will address the ninth Annual Iowa Renewable Fuels Summit on January 27. Panelists Dave Price, of WHO-TV’s “The Insiders,” Craig Robinson, of TheIowaRepublican.com, and Norm Sterzenbach, of Groundswell Public Strategies, will discuss how energy policy may impact the 2016 Iowa caucuses and general elections. “The Iowa caucuses kick off the 2016 election cycle and we’ve already seen potential candidates swarming to Iowa,” said IRFA Executive Director Monte Shaw. “In addition, Iowa is one of only a handful of states that will be truly ‘in play’ during the general election. We saw energy policy play a major role in Iowa’s 2014 senate race. This panel will discuss how energy policy may impact the 2016 elections.” Price currently serves as political director for WHOTV, where he is a weekend news anchor and hosts “The Insiders.” Price’s work has been honored with a national Emmy and Edward R. Murrow award, and he recently published a new book titled, “Caucus Chaos.” Robinson is founder and editor-in-chief of TheIowaRepublican.com, a political news and commentary site he launched in 2009. Prior to The Iowa Republican, Robinson served as Political Director of the Republican Party of Iowa. Sterzenbach is principal of Groundswell Public Strategies, a public strategy firm serving political and public affairs campaigns and companies. Before joining Groundswell, Sterzenbach served as executive drector of the Iowa Democratic Party, and has worked on numerous political campaigns for both state and federal office. Legislation in U.S. Senate proposes to abolish corn ethanol mandate Grassley says he is working to prevent a vote on amendment by Gordon Wolf Legislation introduced in the U.S. Senate on January 16 would abolish the corn ethanol mandate in the Renewable Fuels Standard (RFS). The legislation, the Corn Ethanol Mandate Elimination Act of 2015, is an amendment to the Keystone XL pipeline bill. It was introduced by U.S. Senators Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) and Pat Toomey (R-PA). Senator Jeff Flake (R-AZ) is also a co-sponsor. In a press release, Feinstein said, “The federal mandate for corn ethanol is both unwise and unworkable. Roughly 40 percent of corn in the United States

is currently used for fuel, which increases the price of food and animal feed while also damaging the environment. Additionally, oil companies are unable to blend more corn ethanol into gasoline without causing problems for some gas stations and older automobiles.” She added that with the removal of the corn ethanol mandate, the RFS can serve its intended purpose,
to support the development of advanced, environmentally friendly biofuels, like biodiesel, cellulosic ethanol and other revolutionary fuels. Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA) is working to prevent the amendment from coming up for a vote, his office staff said in an email sent to Iowa Farm and Ranch on January 21. Staff added that if the amendment does come up
for a vote, it would likely be subject to a 60-vote threshold, which is difficult to achieve. Grassley’s staff said the amendment would undermine the commitment the United States made to develop alternative fuels and undermine the investment, research and planning that alternative fuel producers have made to fulfill the policy that Congress enacted in 2005 and 2007.

Senators want to reverse ISU Extension updates ruling on family farmer information about distillers grains bankruptcies Senators Chuck Grassley of Iowa and Al Franken of Minnesota introduced legislation that would reverse a Supreme Court ruling (Hall v. United States) that makes it more difficult for family farmers to reorganize their finances when they fall on hard times. The bill is expected to be referred to the Senate Judiciary Committee where Grassley is the chairman. Grassley and Franken said their Family Farmer Bankruptcy Clarification Act of 2015 remedies a May 2012 Supreme Court ruling that said, despite Congress’s express goal of helping family farmers, the language inserted into the Bankruptcy Code in 2005 conflicted with the Tax Code. The Family Farmer Bankruptcy Clarification Act clarifies that bankrupt family farmers that reorganize their debts are able to treat capital gains taxes owed to a governmental unit, arising from the sale of farm assets during a bankruptcy, as general unsecured claims. It would remove the Internal Revenue Service’s veto power over a bankruptcy reorganization plan’s confirmation, giving the family farmer a chance to reorganize successfully. “Family farmers are in a unique situation where so much of their capital is in the land itself. Congress made clear that it wants farmers to be able to reorganize so
they can keep in the business of farming. Unfortunately, the Supreme Court’s 2012 ruling failed to recognize that, and we intend to fix it,” Grassley said. “The bottom line is that the farmer and the small business creditors should come first, not the IRS.” Grassley and Franken said Chapter 12 recognizes the unique situation that family farmers face when reorganizing through bankruptcy proceedings. It was made permanent in 2005 after nearly 10 years of congressional debate to fine-tune the bankruptcy laws. Chapter 12 allows family farmers to sell portions of their farms to reorganize without capital gains taxes jeopardizing the reorganization. Before the permanent law was in place, the IRS was able to collect any tax liabilities generated during a family farmer bankruptcy reorganization. The senators said that, too often, when the IRS took its cut through the capital gains taxes, no money remained to pay the other creditors, and the farmer had to sell the rest of his land and still lost the family farm. They said Congress’ intent in the 2005 bankruptcy reform law was to create a narrow exception through Chapter 12, that if a family farmer sold land that resulted in a capital gains liability, then the IRS’s claim would not receive priority status.

by Dan Mundt “Ethanol Coproducts for Beef Cattle” is a new series of publications created by Iowa State University (ISU) Extension and Outreach. The publications present the results of new research to help beef producers better understand how to utilize distillers grains in their operations. “As we evaluated changes that have happened recently in the ethanol process, it became apparent that a lot of the information that we had developed on corn coproducts was out of date,” said Dan Loy, director of the ISU Extension and Outreach Iowa Beef Center and ISU Professor of Animal Science. “Basically, the technology had advanced in the ethanol industry so that we think as much as 80 to 85 percent of the ethanol plants are removing at least some oil in the process, compared to what they had done previously.” Loy said it was time to update the information available to beef producers, because oil is a major contributor to the energy content of distillers grains. “The distillers grains of today are at least two to three percent less in oil than what they were previously. And in some cases, there’s even more oil removed than that,” he said. Moisture content, which is variable
depending on the source of the plant, is also an important factor for producers to consider, Loy added. “If (beef producers) have good information from the plants that they’re dealing with, if they know the moisture content, know the oil content, then the nutritional value is much more predictable,” he said. Research into the changes in the nutritional value of distillers grains is an ongoing process, Loy added. ISU is doing initial research with an ethanol plant that is using a secondary fermentation to remove fibers from the distillers grains, he said. Even with the removal of some of the oil and some of the fiber, the resultant feed is still highly palatable and highly nutritious cattle feed that has as high or higher energy content than corn grain, he said. “It still has significant value for the Iowa cattle producer and is a major factor in terms of lowering their cost of production and being competitive with other regions of the United States,” he added.
