Managing risks and inputs Data from ISU farm trials can help level the odds by Gordon Wolf Producers who attended the annual meeting of the Western Iowa Experimental Farm Association on February 27 in Mapleton were reminded how Iowa State University farm trials can help them manage risk. Thirteen Iowa State University (ISU) research farm are located in Iowa. Eight are owned or leased by local, nonprofit associations of farmers and business people, the state owns five, and ISU affiliate organizations own land for research in central Iowa, according to the ISU Research and Demonstration Farms website, www.ag.iastate. edu/farms/. ISU Extension field agronomist Joel DeJong, who serves northwest Iowa, pointed out that the power of the farm trials lies in experiments conducted in multiple locations in multiple years.

“That’s when that repeatability is better and when the power of information is better,” he said when addressing the annual meeting of the Western Iowa Experimental Farm Association. The nonprofit organization owns the Western Research and Demonstration Farm located near Castana. DeJong pointed out that the job of an Extension field agronomist is “kind of like the odds maker in Las Vegas. I’m trying to take research-based information, which is the replicated trials, and I’m trying to share that information with producers so they can make management decisions on their farms. “What research is to me is the odds creation. What are the odds that this is going to happen?” DeJong added, however, that plants are biological systems, so farm trials never happen the same. The more data, the better the odds are. Among the on-farm trials discussed were sulfur fertilization of corn and soybeans, corn fertilizer, corn and soybean management, soybean seed treatment, soybeans fungicide, corn rootworm and corn population. When talking about the latter on-farm trial, DeJong mentioned that producers have very narrow margins now. INPUTS, Page 2A

INPUTS, from Page 1A “We have to figure out where the odds are, where we’re going to cut back on input costs,” he said. “There’s risks that come with cutting back on (corn plant) populations. There’s no doubt about it. But yet, maybe the risk isn’t as extreme as we think, sometimes.” The corn population trials were conducted in Story, Boon, Dallas, Monona and Crawford counties. Populations ranged from 25,000 plants per acre on up to 40,000 to 45,000

plants per acre. Cultivation methods varied. Fall plant stand, fall ear count and yields were reported. DeJong said he can’t remember any studies where 38,000 or 40,000 plants per acre were the best populations for any of the onfarm trials. “Typically, it’s been in that lower 30,000s range, consistently,” he said. Looking at the data, DeJong commented, “Every year is a little different. Maybe those populations change. That’s the hard part. This is one year with

multiple people looking at a similar response.” DeJong said that when decent margins exist, most people manage risk by making sure they have enough plants in the field so they don’t run short. “How do you want to manage that risk as you move forward?” he asked. “There’s more data (the results of the trials) to help you put into that risk package. “I hate to see everybody at the bottom end of it (the lowest populations),” DeJong continued. “I like to see a little room for error,

because errors do occur. But yet, those are things we can put in that package to do some fine tuning. “If you’ve been at 36,000 (plants) and you’re going to drop to 28,000, I think you’d be crazy. You have to be close to your comfort package. Make minor adjustments, not big ones at one time, if that’s what you choose to do. But that’s one year data. Under a different environment, maybe it will be a different answer.” For those interested in the on-farm trials from the Western Research and Demonstration Farm and

DeJong said annual reports for all the farms can be found back to 2000 and added that the ISU farm trial from a year ago included several population trials. On the Plymouth County ISU Extension website, http://www.extension.iastate.edu/plymouth/, data on plant population trials conducted at the Northwest Research and Demonstration Farm can be found for the two previous years.

Reports from the USDA’s National Agriculture Statistics Service 2014 corn harvest third largest on record Iowa corn growers produced 2.37 billon bushels of corn in 2014, the third largest harvest on record. The harvest was two percent below the record high set in 2009 and less than one percent below 2007, according to estimates released February 19 by the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service. Kossuth County was the largest corn producing county in Iowa with 57.2 million bushels. Others among the top five counties are Webster, Plymouth, Sioux and Pottawattamie. The Iowa corn yield, at 178 bushels per acre, was the third highest on records. The record high yield was 181 bushels per acre, set in 2004 and tied in 2009. Four of the five highest yielding counties were in the Southeast District. Jefferson led all counties with an average of 200.9 bushels per acre. Lee County also

topped the 200 bushelsper-acre level. Des Moines, Clinton and Henry counties rounded out the top five. Generally favorable conditions supported corn development during 2014, with widespread heavy rainfall during the last half of August. High grain moisture levels kept harvest one to two weeks behind normal throughout October before more favorable conditions in November let the corn harvest finish on schedule. Soybean yield tied for third highest on record The average state soybean yield of 51.5 bushels per acre was tied for third highest on record, according to a February 19 report issued by the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service. Eighty-four counties had yields increase compared to 2013. The yield increase was more than 10 bushels per acre in 24 counties. The highest county yields were recorded in Sioux (60.9), Scott (60.2) and

Clinton (58.1) The counties with the lowest yields were Wright (43.1), Emmet (42.9) and Decatur (40.5). The above-average yields were due to moderate temperatures with adequate rain during the growing season. In 2014, Plymouth, Pottawattamie, Kossuth and Sioux were the four largest soybean-producing counties in Iowa. Plymouth County produced 11.2 million bushels of soybeans. Iowa’s soybean production of 506 million bushels was the third largest on record, behind only 2005 and 2006. Five of Iowa’s districts had record production, including North Central, West Central and all three southern districts.

The Northeastern District produced 1.49 million tons of silage, representing 24 percent of the state total. No other district had more than 10 percent of the state total silage production. The highest silage yields were recorded in the Central District, where yields averaged 22.5 tons per acre. the largest decrease in the number of farms was in the $1,000 to $9,999 sales range with a decrease of 400 farms from 27,500 in 2013 to 27,100 in 2014. Total land in farms in Iowa in 2014 was 30.5 million acres, down 100,000 acres from 2013. The decrease came from farms in the $500,000 to $999,999 sales range, with fell to 8.7 million acres. The average farm size in Iowa in 2014 was 347 acres, up one acre from 2013. The average farm size in the $1 million in sales and over class increased 77 acres from 1,284 acres in 2013 to 1,301 acres in 2014. The number of farms in the United States for 2014 was estimated at 2.08 million, down 18,000 farms from 2013. Total land in farms, at 913 million acres, decreased 1.03 million acres from 2013. The average farm size for 2014 was 438 acres, up three acres from 2013.

Feedlot facilities workshops offered Workshops focused on comparison of feedlot facility investments, production benefits, cattle comfort and environmental stewardship will take place on March 25 at the Carroll County Extension Office in Car-

roll, and on March 18 at the Wallace Foundation Learning Center, Armstrong Farm, near Lewis. The meetings will run from 9:45 a.m. to 3 p.m. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach and the Iowa Beef Center

will conduct the workshops. The workshops are supported by a North Central Region Risk Management Education grant. Iowa Cattlemen’s Association, and the Coalition to support Iowa

Farmers are cooperating partners. A revised feedlot systems manual and decision tool will be available to workshop participants. Workshop participants will work with several scenarios to make deci-

sions regarding feedlot facility investments and learn how different facility types may work for each scenario. A $20 registration fee will be payable at the door, but those interested in participating need to

Odebolt woman selected for national beef committee Terri Carstensen, a cattle feeder from Odebolt, was selected to serve a one-year term on the Beef Promotion Operating Committee, during the Cattle Industry Annual Convention in San Antonio, Texas, on February 3 through 7. The Beef Promotion Operating Committee will make final budget allocations for fiscal year 2016 national beef checkoff programs, following input from beef productions nationwide. Two other Iowans were

selected to serve on national committees to oversee the beef checkoff. Scott McGregor, a cattle feeder from Nashua, will also serve a one-year term on the Beef Promotion Operating Committee, and Kent Pruismann, a feedlot operator from Rock Valley, was selected to serve on the executive committee of the Cattlemen’s Beef Board. Pruismann, appointed by the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, represents Iowa cattle producers on the Beef Board.

Carstensen and McGregor represent the Iowa Beef Industry Council on the Federation of State Beef Councils, which is an alliance of 44 state beef councils that collect the $1 perhead beef checkoff. Beef councils forward 50 cents to the national Cattlemen’s Beef Board (CBB) and retain the other 50 cents for in-state use or to reinvest with the federation to extend national beef promotion efforts. Each year the beef checkoff undergoes a producer-

NRCS announces renewal option, extends deadline for CSP sign up

driven budget and program planning process. The operating committee, with 10 federation members and 10 CBB members, approves the final national plan. National programs are funded by investments from the federation (from state beef council investments) and the national 50 cents, collected through the Cattlemen’s Beef Board. The operating committee will approve plans for fiscal year 2016, which begins October 1, 2015.

USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) Chief Jason Weller announced a renewal option through March 31, 2015, for eligible agricultural producers with 2011 expiring Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP) contracts. The producers must adopt additional activities to help them achieve higher levels of conservation on their farms. USDA also extended the deadline for farmers to submit applications for the general CSP sign up, until March 13. CSP is offered through a continuous sign up, but NRCS periodically makes funding selections. Last year, Iowa NRCS obligated more than $4.5 million through 436 contracts covering 201,000 acres. The program emphasizes conservation performance through which producers earn higher payments for higher performance. A CSP self-screening checklist is available to help producers determine if the program is suitable for their operation. The checklist highlights basic information about CSP eligibility requirements, stewardship threshold requirements and payment types.

Iowa native’s Kenya school project moves forward by Dan Mundt Construction is underway at the Simbolei Academy, in Rift Valley Province, Kenya. The project is the creation of Andrea and Richard Kaitany, whose goal is to build a high school for girls in Richard’s hometown, Iten. Andrea grew up on a farm near Denison and is a 1982 graduate of Denison High School. She is currently a professor in the department of writing at Grand Valley State University, in Michigan. The school building’s foundation, support columns and first story stone walls are now complete. “Next year, we expect to finish the roof. So we’re getting there,” Andrea said. When Simbolei Academy opens, it will be a boarding school for about 300 girls. “It will offer, first of all, the standard high school curriculum, which girls have to now travel a long ways to get,” Andrea said. Andrea said the project initially grew out of her husband’s wish to pay back his community for helping him go to college. Richard grew up in rural Kenya and was given a running scholarship to attend Iowa State University. “He didn’t have enough money for the plane ticket, even though he had a full scholarship,” Andrea said. “So all the people in the area got together and raised the money for the plane ticket.” Andrea said many years later, when the Kaitany family was visiting Kenya, they discussed what kind of project they could do to help return the favor. The area had a good private high school for boys, which is where Richard went to school, but there was no high school for girls. “So that’s how the project idea got started,” she said. The Kaitanys bought the land for the school in 2006 and broke ground for construction in 2011. “About that time, when we were beginning construction, I decided I wanted to be in on it,” Andrea said. Richard always goes to Kenya in January when he can take time off from his job as plant pathologist for the state of Michigan, Andrea said. “I can’t go then because I’m teaching,” she explained. “So we started a summer literacy program,

which we’ve been doing since 2012.” Andrea visits primary schools, donates books and reads to kids. She also presents a workshop for teachers to talk about the importance of leisure reading for children. She said her summer visits also help generate interest about the school among the children of the Kamariny neighborhood, where the school is being built. Andrea also takes care of organizational details for the project during her summer literacy outreach program. She visits government offices to get permits and makes arrangements for the next phase of construction. “Every year, Richard gets one major part of the construction done and then, in July, when I go I do the literacy program, I also check and make sure everything is secure and go over the bookkeeping and all the paperwork,” she said. The school will have a library that will be open to all the members of the community. “The closest public library is about 20 miles away and since most people don’t have cars, that means effectively they don’t have a library,” Andrea said. “We may think public libraries are old-fashioned, but (community members) don’t have computers, either.” Most members of the local community, especially the older people and children, don’t have an easy way to get news of the world, she said. “Our plan is, since we’re in this rural, culturally diverse area, that we would have an open public community library and we would continue to offer literacy programs through the school,” Andrea said. “The girls could go out and help with the tutoring, too, so that it’s not always just a few volunteers.” School/community interaction is a fairly radical idea for Kenya. Many of the boarding schools in the country are separated from the communities in which they are located. Community members aren’t allowed into the schools and the schools don’t allow the kids out. “We want the school to be

more like an American high school, in that there is always activity that involves the community,” she explained. “Rather than just being an isolated sort of elitist institution, we want it to be part of the community, so that the kids are out working with their neighbors and the neighbors are coming in to use the library and to attend workshops.” Iten already has a building that will be used as a community center. The school will use the center for student performances, workshops, mentoring and small business tutoring. “People are still not quite sure what we’re up to, I think,” she said. “The school will have se-

curity in place for the dormitory and other areas, but we’re actually going to let people come into the campus. They just have never seen anything like that.” The Kaitanys funded the early stages of the project themselves. “When we started out, Richard and I refinanced our house to buy the land,” Andrea said. “We put in as much as we could, to get the construction started.” In 2012, they started a non-profit organization to help generate additional funds. The Simbolei Community Assistance Association does small fundraisers, such as a concert and spaghetti dinner in Denison

two years ago. “I’d say that probably Richard and I are still financing probably at least 70 percent of it, but a lot of it now is starting to come from donations,” she said. “A lot of it is small donations from individuals and they just add up over time and that really speeds things up.” Donations can be given to the project at www.simboleiacademy.org. Andrea said another donation option is to purchase the cookbook available on the website. The cookbook has African recipes and pictures of the Simbolei project. Interested volunteers can also visit the school this summer.

“This year, we have a plan for a volunteer trip,” Andrea said. “That’s really going to be helpful to us as far as getting the word out, but it will also be a chance for people who want to know more about the project, and want a little bit of a fun adventure, to come and see the project, work with the kids and get to see Kenya, too.” The volunteer trip is scheduled for July 10 to 21. Information is available on the website. The next step in the construction project will be the addition of the school’s roof, which will happen in January, 2016. “We’re expecting to open in January 2017, at this

MARCH 2015 point. It will take at least a year after the roof is on to get all the inside finishing done and hire staff,” Andrea said. After their daughter, Jelimo, graduates from high school in 2018, Andrea and Richard plan to move to Kenya to run the school. “I like teaching college students, but you can only do the same thing for so long and then you want something different,” she said. “Our plan is that I would

run the school,” Andrea said. “Richard has other projects that he’d work on. He’d help (with the school), but he’s mostly more interested in running his family farm and doing agricultural consulting. “He’s a little older than I am, so we see it as sort of an early retirement or a late career change, depending on how you look at it. He likes his job pretty well, but he has always wanted to go home and so he’s looking forward to it.”

Roush congratulated on service to ISU research farm, association by Gordon Wolf During the annual meeting of the Western Iowa Experimental Farm Association Friday morning at the Beef ‘n Brew in Mapleton, Wayne Roush, superintendent of the Western Research and Demonstration Farm near Castana, was honored for 26 years of service. Roush will be retiring after June, and he and his wife, Pat, principal of Denison Middle School, will be moving to northern Minnesota. Roush used a road analogy to describe his 26 years at the research farm, describing it as a fairly straight route where many projects have been accomplished, although a no passing sign was encountered from time to time. He said his road ahead is changing and will not be as well defined as it was in the past; the road will not be as straight. Roush added that at the top of the hill, another view can be seen. Roush quipped that he expected to continue to be

involved in research, only in his favorite hobby; his research will be centered on what makes fish bite. He thanked the Western Iowa Experimental Farm Association for cooperating with the research farm and for all the support given during his 26 years. Mark Honeyman, coordinator of the research farms for Iowa State, spoke during the presentation of a plaque to Roush. He said Roush is probably one of the most versatile individuals that has worked within the research farm system. He said Roush learned how to raise alligators, fed on baby pigs that had died. The experiment was conducted more than 10 years ago. Honeyman recalled a phone call in which Roush said he discovered why the alligators weren’t growing as expected; the concrete in the tanks in which the alligators lived was too cold, and alligators are coldblooded animals. Roush’s solution was to install waterbed heaters, and the alligators began eating more.

Mark Honeyman, coordinator of the research farms for Iowa State, spoke during the presentation of a plaque to Roush. Later, Roush called Honeyman to tell him that he learned how to weigh the alligators; he turned down the heat the night before so they wouldn’t be as active. Roush was probably the only farm superintendent in the research farm system that hosted an anthropology dig. Two years ago in May, a professor from the ISU anthropology department told Honeyman he was planning to take a group of undergraduate students on a dig near Ute and wondered if

About 20 individuals stayed at the farm, but when it continued to rain, Roush had them stay inside the shop at the farm. The group stayed at the farm, when not involved in the dig, for six weeks.

Celebrating agriculture National Ag Week is March 15-21, Ag Day is March 18 The Agriculture Council of America (ACA) will host the 42nd anniversary of National Ag Day on March 18. The theme for National Ag Day is “Agriculture: Sustaining Future Generations.” The ACA will host major events in the nation’s capital including the Mix-and-Mingle Luncheon and the National Celebration of Agriculture Dinner. Additionally, the ACA will bring approximately 100 college students to Washington to deliver the message of Ag Day to the Hill. National Ag Day takes place during National Agriculture Week, which is March 15 through 21. The celebration of National Ag Day marks a nationwide effort to tell the story of American agriculture and remind citizens that agriculture is a part of everyone. A number of producers, agricultural associations, corporations, students and government organizations involved in agriculture are expected to participate. ACA is a nonprofit organization is comprises of leaders in the agricultural, food and fiber community, dedicating its efforts to increasing the public’s awareness of agriculture’s role in modern society. The National Ag Day program encourages every American to: Understand how food and fiber products are produced Appreciate the role agriculture plays in providing

safe, abundant and affordable products Value the essential role of agriculture in maintaining a strong economy Acknowledge and consider career opportunities in the agriculture, food and fiber industry Agriculture provides almost everything we eat, use and wear on a daily basis. But too few people truly understand the contribution. This is particularly the case in schools, where students may only be exposed to agriculture if they enroll in related vocational training. By building awareness, the ACA encourages young people to consider career opportunities in agriculture. Each American farmer feeds more than 144 people, a dramatic increase from 25 people in the 1960s. Quite simply, American agriculture is doing more, and doing it better. As the world population soars, an even greater demand exists for the food and fiber produced in the United States. According to the Iowa Agriculture Literacy Foundation, Iowa is a leading producer of agricultural products that are essential to feed a growing world population. World population is expected to reach more than 9 billion by 2050. Iowa is number one in the production of corn, soybeans, hogs and eggs. During a talk at the Cherokee County Ag Expo in February, Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey listed the following important points about agriculture in the state: w Iowa is the biggest corn producing state and produces more corn than all but three countries in the world - the United States, China and Brazil w Iowa produces more soybeans than all but four countries in the world - the United States, Brazil, Argentina and China. Iowa has more pork production than most other countries. w Iowa has more beef and dairy animals than people.

“FARMLAND” to screen at National Ag Day 2014 documentary features six young farmers A special screening of the documentary feature film FARMLAND will be presented as part of National Ag Day in Sioux City on March 18. The event is hosted by the Iowa Agriculture Literacy Foundation (IALF) and will be open to the public. The film, from Academy Award-winning director James Moll, follows the lives of farmers and ranchers in their twenties, all of whom are now responsible for running their farming businesses. The film explores the risks and rewards associated with farming and the passion that is passed down from generation to generation. “Farmland” features stories about producers who are engaged in a variety of farming and ranching operations. “This film isn’t just about what it’s like to be a farmer; it’s about a way of life. It’s also about a subject that affects our lives daily,” said Moll. “Many Americans have never set foot on a farm or ranch,” said IALF executive director Will Fett. “Few have met or talked to the people who grow and raise the food we eat. This film will let them connect with modern agriculture in a whole new way.” FARMLAND, Page 11B

USDA adds EQIP signup cutoff deadline The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) is adding a second Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) signup deadline of April 17. Through EQIP, NRCS provides financial and technical assistance to install conservation practices such as nutrient management, terraces, grassed waterways, cover crops, manure management facilities, and pasture management. Many of these practices help reduce soil erosion, improve water quality, and even create much-needed wildlife habitat to the Iowa landscape. Several EQIP initiatives are included in the signup, where NRCS sets aside financial assistance for specific practices and

producers. Examples include practices that improve on-farm energy, assist in the organic transition process, add wildlife habitat, and target certain practices such as seasonal high tunnels. Iowa NRCS also sets aside 10 percent of the Iowa EQIP financial assistance program for the historically underserved, which include beginning farmers, socially disadvantaged farmers, limited resource producers, and veterans. Those interested should visit their local NRCS office for more information about conservation planning and financial assistance to fund conservation practices on their farm, or go to www.ia.nrcs.usda.gov.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) has contacted approximately 82,000 of the nation’s farmers for the March Agricultural Survey to determine their plans for the upcoming growing season, including 2,956 in Iowa. The USDA’s Prospective Plantings report provides USDA’s first survey-based estimates of farmers’ planting intentions for the year, according to NASS’ Upper Midwest Regional Director Greg Thessen. The survey questionnaire, which was mailed in late February, asks producers to provide information about the types of crops they intend to plant in 2015, how many acres they intend to plant, and the amounts of grain and oilseed they store

on their farms. NASS encourages producers to respond online or by mail. Those producers who do not respond by the deadline may be contacted for a telephone or personal interview. NASS will compile and analyze the survey information and publish the results in the annual Prospective Plantings report and quarterly Grain Stocks report, both to be released on March 31. As with all NASS surveys, information provided by respondents is confidential, as required by federal law. All NASS reports are available online at www.nass. usda.gov. Volunteer precipitation observers invited to join weather network The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship’s State Climatology Office and the National Weather Service are recruiting volunteer precipitation observers across Iowa to participate in the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow network, known as “CoCoRaHS.” All that is needed to participate is an interest in the weather, a four-inch diameter rain gauge, a suitable location to set up the gauge and access to the internet. All data collected are immediately available for free online and are routinely used for flood forecasting, drought assessment, news media stories, scientific research and general weather interest. More information about

the network is available on the CoCoRaHS website at www.cocorahs.org. The website includes information on how to join, where to purchase your rain gauge and how to accurately measure and report rain and snow. The network was established by the Colorado Climate Center in 1998 and has now spread to all 50 states and Canada. Iowa joined the volunteer network in 2007 and now has more than 300 registered CoCoRaHS observers across the state. However, more observers are needed to better document the amount and variability of rain and snow across Iowa. The need for additional observers is particularly

critical in the following counties: Adams, Allamakee, Audubon, Calhoun, Cedar, Davis, Delaware, Jefferson, Keokuk, Louisa, Lucas, Palo Alto, Pocahontas, Van Buren, Wapello, Wayne and Wright. “In 2014 Iowa experienced a mostly wet year with record flooding in far northwest Iowa in June, along with record high annual precipitation totals set at Denison and Greenfield, allowing current soil moisture levels to be the highest they have been for this time of year since 2011,” said State Climatologist Harry Hillaker. “Whatever comes our way in 2015, the weather observations obtained by this network can be of great benefit in obtaining a clearer picture of Iowa’s weather.”

NASS Hogs and Pigs report to be released on March 27 Producers encouraged to respond to surveys

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) is contacting pork producers and contractors across the nation for the March Hogs and Pigs Survey. NASS is surveying producers for detailed information on market hog and breeding stock inventories, as well as farrowing intentions. The quarterly survey is

used by NASS to measure and report conditions and trends in the U.S. pork industry, according to Greg Thessen, regional NASS director for the Upper Midwest. He said the survey will help gauge the condition of the industry as it enters 2015. Producers who have received the survey questionnaire in the mail can respond using the internet, mail or fax. Producers who don’t respond will have the opportunity for a telephone or personal interview. All information provided by respondents is confidential, by law. NASS said it safeguards the privacy of all responses and

publishes only state- and national-level data, ensuring that no individual producer or operation can be identified. “By responding to the March Hog and Pigs Survey, producers can make sure that NASS can provide timely, accurate and objective data that all sectors of the U.S. pork industry, including producers themselves, depend on to help make sound business decisions,” said Thessen. Babies and names We’ve had our first baby calf of the season. The big kid’s heifer from last year, Rachael, had her first calf. Truth be told, our vet had to help Rachael deliver her calf because she wasn’t getting the job done on her own. My husband wanted to know why the show heifers always seem to have such a hard time delivering their calves the first time around. Pick me! Pick me! Maybe because they spend an entire ear pampered and treated like princesses, what with the daily showers and primping of the hair? You can’t expect

them to turn around and do actual WORK like push a baby out on their own. He weighed in around 75 pounds, but still not huge for a calf. And the pampering began from the beginning for him, with a blow dry to get him warm as mama patiently watched nearby. After much discussion and negotiation, my son decided to name him Oliver, or Ollie for short. The first choices for names were Damian and Dick. No thank you. I’d like to take this opportunity to say you’re welcome to my future daughters-in-law wherever they are. I’m teach-

ing my boys the fine art of picking good names for babies in a collaborative atmosphere. Either that, or they’re getting all their baby naming hankerings out of their system and my daughtersin-law will be able to pick whatever they want within reason. We’ve had some pretty strange name choices for the calves, most of which I can’t even remember. Or maybe I’ve just blocked them out because they were so strange. (Who names a black calf, “Buttercup?”) So, I instituted the no baby naming until mom gets home rule this year.

So far, it’s working out pretty well. I’ve negotiated my first name away from potentially bad choices. Seriously, if that calf ends up being shown as a steer next year at the fair, would you really want a steer named “Damian” stalled next to you? I think not. Mom and baby spent the next few nights in our “nursery” warming up because our weather was so cold. They’re now roaming free, and the nursery is ready for the next show calf baby to be born. Let’s just hope that the boys choose names wisely. We don’t need a Diablo or Lucifer on our hands!

Cook’s Corner Apple Pecan French Toast Cups

BBQ Ranch Quesadillas

Ingredients 3 cups baking apples, peeled, cored, finely chopped 4 eggs 8 cups French bread, cut into 1 inch cubes 1 cup milk ½ cup heavy whipping cream ½ tsp vanilla 2 tsp apple pie spice, divided 1 cup brown sugar, divided 2 tbsp cornstarch Topping 6 tbsp butter, melted ¾ cup pecans, chopped

1 tbsp plus 2 teaspoons maple syrup

Instructions 1. Place bread cubes in a large bowl. In medium bowl, beat together eggs, milk, whipping cream, vanilla and 1 teaspoon apple pie spice. Pour egg mixture over bread and let soak for 15 minutes. 2. Preheat oven to 350°F. Combine ¼ cup brown sugar, 1 teaspoon apple pie spice and cornstarch. Sprinkle over chopped apples and stir. 3. Divide soaked bread cubes among approximately 20 well-greased muffin cups, filling each about two-thirds full. Lightly press bread down. Top evenly with apple mixture. Combine melted butter with maple syrup, ¾ cup brown sugar and pecans. Mix well and spoon evenly over apples. 4. Bake for 22 to 25 minutes or until egg has set and tops are golden brown. Unmold and, if desired, serve with additional maple syrup, pecans and whipping cream.

Ingredients 1 package (16 ounces) frozen pepper stir-fry blend (green, red, yellow peppers) ¼ cup diced onion 1½ cups prepared shredded barbecue beef ¼ cup barbecue sauce ½ cup light ranch dressing 8 (8-inch) whole wheat tortillas 1½ cups shredded Cheddar Cheese Non-stick cooking spray Instructions 1. Prepare stir-fry pepper blend with diced onion added and heat barbecue beef according to package directions. While vegetables and beef are cooking, mix barbecue sauce and ranch dressing in small serving bowl; set aside for dipping sauce. 2. On a tortilla, evenly layer ¼ cup plus 2 tablespoons each of shredded beef and cheese. Add about ¼ to ½ cup vegetables. Cover with a second tortilla. 3. Repeat for total of 4 quesadillas. Spray large skillet or counter-top grill with non-stick cooking spray. Cook each quesadilla for 3 minutes on each side or until golden and cheese is melted. 4. Cut into 8 wedges; serve with barbecue-ranch dipping sauce.

2015 Mystery Quilt ~ March Adventurous quilters will love this year’s quilt, which will be a mystery quilt put together in 24 sections throughout the year. Each month’s sections can be set aside in a box until the final section and assembly instructions are revealed in December. The entire quilt will be finished by the end of the year. Borders will be created along with each section. Refer to January’s instructions for fabric and cutting instructions. Refer to February’s instructions for piecing the half square triangles. PIECING Remember using a quarter inch foot will help piecing accurately. Make the half-square triangles as listed to the side of each section. Lay out the squares to the right and sew the columns together first, then sew those together to make the piece. Also, remember that “X” marks the miscellaneous medium background fabrics. Each finished block within the sections should be 2” square so you can match everything in the final month. After sewing this together, pin the section label to the top center, and place this in your project box until next month.

FARMLAND, from Page 1B David Loberg, a fifth-generation ag producer from Carroll, Nebraska, is one of six U.S. farmers featured in the film. “It was a little nerve-wracking, just because I’m not much for being filmed all the time,” Loberg said. The film was shot two growing seasons ago on the farm he inherited when his father passed away due to cancer, according to Loberg. The Loberg family’s struggle to come to grips with their loss, while keeping the farm running as usual, is one of the themes of the film. “At first we were a bit nervous, but in the end, we decided that sure, we could be a part of it,” Loberg said. “Most people never get a chance to do something like this in their life.” “Farmland” is intended to be a good representation of farming for individuals who aren’t necessarily familiar with the subject. The film puts names and faces to agricultural producers and shows what their everyday work is like. It also seeks to decrease the disconnection between the experiences of rural and urban producers. According to information available on the film’s website, the production features: w Leighton Cooley, a fourth-generation poultry farmer, who operates four farms in Georgia with his father. He has a cow-calf operation, raises chickens and grows hay. w Brad Bellah, a sixth-generation cattle rancher, who runs beef cattle opera-

tions in Texas and Colorado, including a natural beef herd. w Loberg, a fifth-generation corn and soybean farmer, who runs the family farm with his mother. The farm custom feeds 500 head of cows for a local dairy operation and runs an irrigation business. w Sutton Morgan, a fourth-generation farmer from California, grows, packs and sells onions and potatoes, and also grows melons, carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, lettuce, chard, kale and alfalfa. w Margaret Schlass, a first-generation Pennsylvania farmer of certified naturally grown vegetables. w Ryan Veldhuizen, a fourth-generation farmer, who is taking over the operation of his family’s hog farm in Minnesota with his brother and sister. The farm grows hogs, corn and soybeans, which they use for feed. The film will be presented in the Weikert Auditorium in Buhler Hall at Morningside College. The screening is free to the public. Doors will open at 5 p.m. and the film will begin at 6 p.m. The event will help celebrate National Ag Day, which recognizes the contributions of agriculture toward providing a safe and affordable food supply. After the film, guests will be invited to ask questions of a panel of experts from the agriculture industry.
