I hope this newsletter finds you well and looking forward to spring! Greater Raleigh Alumnae Chapter has had a variety of fun events, and we’re excited about more chances to enjoy each other’s company this spring during our IRD luncheon in April and our annual potluck dinner and officer installation in May. In November, we went to the N.C. Museum of Art to see “Rolling Sculpture: Art Deco Cars from the 1930s and ‘40s,” and in December we gathered for our annual holiday celebration and gift exchange at the home of Charity Schuller, who along with cohost Dawn Myers treated us to an assortment of treats. We held a special ceremony to present two Honors of Epsilon Pi: the Arc with Diamond to Erica Ring and the Arc to Dawn Myers. At our January meeting, hosted by Elsie Eads, we wore our Alpha Gam attire and brought in Valentine treats for our Adopt-A-Chapters. February’s meeting was held at the home of Jan White, and Quinn Willard co-hosted. The meeting focused on learning more about our sisters who were in attendance. We really appreciate our hosts and co-hosts for welcoming us into their homes and providing us with such wonderful hospitality! Our chapter has continued to enjoy our philanthropic success. We raised nearly $1,400 for Triangle JDRF during their One Walk, thanks to our walk captain Carrie Wheeler. At our December meeting, we collected food and household supplies for House of Hope, a Christian therapeutic school, home, and counseling center for hurting and troubled girls ages 12-17 and their families. We also had a successful year for our pecan sale, and at our March meeting we will determine which charities will receive the proceeds. Thank you to everyone who sold and

In-store sales of Charity Day tickets are divided among charities and churches that send representatives to greet and sell tickets on the day of the event. The sale is Saturday, April 29 from 6:00 AM to 10:00 AM at all local area Belk stores. If you are interested in purchasing and/or selling tickets for the sale, please contact Jean Campbell Burroughs at jean@cj4m.com.

purchased pecans! Jeanette Benjey continues to amaze us in her efforts as Philanthropy chair and coordinator of the annual pecan sale, a role she has held for many years. We hope you can join us on Saturday, April 8 as we celebrate International Reunion Day! Our theme this year is “Empowering Women to Lead the Way,” and it will be held at the home of Mary Ann Akin. North Carolina’s Secretary of State and Alpha Gam alumna Elaine Folk Marshall will be our guest speaker. More details about this celebration of sisterhood can be found inside this issue, and don’t forget – you can send in your RSVP online at www.agdraleigh.org. If you have ideas for future programs or activities or would like to host a meeting, please let us know. We really appreciate everyone's contributions of time, talent, and creativity; you are what makes our chapter a success! Best wishes for an excellent spring and summer! A big THANK YOU to all who bought and sold pecans to support our annual sale! This year, we sold 984 pounds of pecans, and our profit was just over $1,600. We use these funds each year to support the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation and other national and local charities.

Our November social was a tour of the “Rolling Sculpture: Art Deco Cars” special exhibit at the N.C. Museum of Art.

Ways & Means As part of our Ways & Means fundraising, GRAC is again participating in the Great Lakes Scrip Center Program. It is an easy way to raise money for the chapter while shopping at your favorite retailers - our chapter earns a rebate for each gift card sold through the Scrip program. There is a huge list of participating stores and websites, along with hotels, movie theaters, and restaurants. Several of our sisters purchase Scrip gift cards to make their regular purchases, such as groceries and home improvements. Scrip can also be used for travel, so keep it in mind when planning your next vacation! Please contact Jean Campbell Burroughs at jean@cj4m.com for more information.

Alumnae Dues

We had a great time at our December meeting and holiday party! As always, the gift exchange was a lot of fun - we unwrapped quite a few squirrels.

Erica Snell Ring and Dawn Pasley Myers were presented with Honors of Epsilon Pi at the December meeting. Erica now wears the Arc with Diamond, and Dawn wears the Arc.

Your $40.00 annual Alumnae Dues payment to the International Fraternity supports numerous Alpha Gam initiatives, collegiate members, our extension efforts and our volunteers. Your voluntary contribution makes a true impact, providing our Fraternity with the sustainability to extend our reach and the means to exceed our Purpose! You can pay your Alumnae Dues today by visiting www.alphagammadelta.org/ alphagams/alumnae/ alumnaedues.

April 8 - International Reunion Day Celebration at 11:00 a.m. (see invitation inside this issue)

Amber Salley Zelazny (AO ‘98) writes, “Since it has been sometime since I wrote to you I would like to share some updates on my life. I was married on August 29, 2015 to my husband Mitchell. He is a native Chicagoan so I'll be staying in Chicago for the foreseeable future. Last fall we bought a home in a neighborhood called Old Town. It is home to the Second City Theater company which is well known for discovering many of the talents that have starred in Saturday Night Live! It is also close to Lake Michigan and we are close enough to downtown Chicago that I could walk to work if I were so inclined. We are very happy in our new home and purchased it at a great time because I am pregnant and am due in early April. We don't know what we are having and want to keep it a surprise until the delivery. I am delivering at Northwestern University Hospital (Mary Lou may have interest in hearing that) which has very nice services. A friend of mine from Raleigh who moved to Chicago and has since moved back to Raleigh had her eldest there and said it was a great experience. My mom is planning to move to Chicago soon (she currently lives in Savannah) to be close to her first grandchild.”

May 11 - Annual Potluck Dinner and Officer Installation We take a break from formal chapter events during summer months, but we do get together for lunch a few times before our programming year begins in September. If you are interested in joining our e-mail list to receive all of our updates on chapter events, visit our Web site: agdraleigh.org.

Judith Hayes Hand (EA ’58) is in her 15th year as a Master Docent at the Birmingham Museum of Art and at Arlington Historical House, as well as participating in a variety of book, civic, cultural, and historical organizations. In a recent letter to the chapter, Judith wrote, “We were in Chapel Hill from fall 1961 to August 1967, when we moved to Pasadena, CA to Cal Tech for two years for George to do post-doc. We have been in Birmingham since August 1969, so 47 years. Even though I graduated from the University of Missouri in 1961, I was asked by National President Lorna Wilson to work with Gamma Epsilon Chapter at UNC, when she found out we were possibly moving there. I was on EC the first year, 1961-62 as an advisor (don’t remember position, possibly PH or Membership.) At the end of the year, Eleanor Grange Heath, who was EC Chair, resigned. There were very few GE alums living in CH, and they all had probably had their turn at EC positions. No one else was available so I was named EC Chair after having been out of college only one year. Thus, I was EC Chair from 1962-65, when the chapter was closed. I remember Marg Horner well, as well as Daphne, Jacque, Joan, and Jean, as I attended alumnae meetings after the chapter closed, until we left

in Aug. 1967. I still keep up with Barbara Mansfield Peck, GE, who has lived in Florence AL for years. She stayed with me in CH for a week one summer until a dormitory opened. I attended Convention in 1964, and was so fortunate to receive the Arc in 1966, petitioned by the Raleigh Chapter, and presented me by Jean along with a small ceramic badge box which is still on a table in my living room. My best to all.” Lauren Bednarcyk Bond (AM ‘87) writes, “My small company, Care is There, fills my working hours. I have two amazing parttime employees now, and we care for a small group of clients.”

Adopt-a-Chapter News

Philanthropy Update from IHQ Alpha Gamma Delta shared a communication in mid-January with exciting news about our Fraternity’s evolution and transition to a broader philanthropic focus, which is fighting hunger. Many alumnae chapters and clubs are already supporting the effort to fight hunger, and we look forward to the amazing impact our sisterhood will make across the continent! Additional information will be coming from the International Fraternity to help prepare for the official transition that will occur in July.
