News from the Greater Raleigh Alumnae Chapter of Alpha Gamma Delta

Fall 2017 Volume 70, Issue 1

THE ECHO PRESIDENT’S LETTER Dear Sisters, I hope you are having a wonderful fall season so far and enjoying these beautiful days! The 2016-17 year was a great one for the Greater Raleigh Alumnae Chapter. We remain in Good Standing and our chapter received the “Living with Purpose” distinction, which is the highest level in the Alumnae Recognition Program. I want to thank all our sisters who have given their time and shared their talents to help make our chapter such a great place to gather in sisterhood. We had another excellent year when it comes to philanthropy! We participated in the JDRF One walk and donated the proceeds from our pecan sale fundraiser to Shepherd’s Table, American Diabetes Association - Camp Carolina Trails, JDRF, and Crayons to Calculators. In December we gathered goods for House of Hope, a Christian therapeutic school, home, and counseling center for hurting and troubled girls ages 12-17 and their families. We also had a clothes swap in May where the remaining articles of clothing and accessories were donated to several local charities. We celebrated IRD on April 8th with a beautiful brunch at the home of Mary Ann Walsh Akin (ZI ’83). The theme for IRD was “Empowering Women to Lead the Way.” Our guest speaker was North Carolina’s Secretary of State Elaine Marshall (AΞ ’64). Alpha Gamma Delta’s new philanthropic focus of fighting hunger was launched at The Leadership Conference (TLC) this summer. Allison Hinson (ΘO ‘99) attended TLC and participated in the Fraternity’s first hunger service project where 74,000 meals were packaged and donated to the Million Meals Movement. In September we had Alpha Gam Always at Milton’s Restaurant. Alpha Gam Always is a laid-back social event where sisters can renew their bonds of sisterhood and connect with other Alpha Gams. It’s a great way to start the new year!

WAYS AND MEANS The Ways and Means Committee is excited to announce two new incentives involving Shop with Scrip! Shop with Scrip is a great way for our Chapter to earn money, all while we make our everyday purchases! To encourage those who may be interested in trying it out, or those who may want to explore more of what Scrip has to offer, we have come up with two new reasons to shop. Dues/Donation to Foundation A sister who raises $75 or more for the Chapter through their Scrip purchases (July 2017-July 2018), may select to have her 2018 dues paid by the Chapter OR a donation made in her name to Foundation for 2018.

Support Fees are $25. Support Fees are not required, but the money goes to support chapter activities as well as send a member to convention. You can pay your annual support fee at http:// www.greaterraleigh.alphagam madelta.org/how-to-join A convenience charge is added for online payments.

ADDRESS CHANGE If you have had an address change in the past year, please contact Jan Thorpe White with your updated details at jtwhite6@bellsouth.net.

Monthly Shopping Challenge As an additional incentive, for any sister who makes at least one purchase from Scrip every month from October 2017 – April 2018, we will have a special token of recognition to be given at our May meeting (or if unable to attend that meeting, soon after). INTERESTING FACT: With just 5 sisters actively participating last year we raised $387.28. We're sure we can do even better this year! Want to make things even easier? That’s okay! If you sign up for PrestoPay, you can order Scrip Now or Reloads anytime. Signing up for Prestopay is easy, and still earns money for the Greater Raleigh Chapter. We encourage everyone to learn more about this system. You can go to https://goo.gl/VbXevu to learn all about PrestoPay and additional information is available on www.shopwithscrip.com.

Elaine Marshall (AΞ), North Carolina's Secretary of State and Alpha Gamma Delta Distinguished Citizen, was our speaker at our IRD brunch held on April 8th at the home of Mary Ann Walsh Akin (ZI). Elaine inspired us through the telling of her humble beginnings as the daughter of a farmer in rural Maryland. She received a degree in textiles from the University of Maryland where she served as chapter president of the Alpha Xi Chapter of Alpha Gamma Delta. She went on to earn a law degree and has committed her life to serving others. Elaine became the first woman elected as North Carolina Secretary of State and to a statewide executive office in North Carolina. She is also the longest-serving mem-

ber of the Council of State. Elaine challenged us to always keep moving forward. She reminded us that we are always influencing someone and we are the ones who will decide if that is positive or negative. GRAC also honored Sarah Elkins (ΘO) with the chapter’s GEM award for outstanding service to our chapter over the past year.

BELK CHARITY DAYS GRAC is once again participating in the Belk Charity Day Sale to raise funds for AGD Foundation. Our Chapter is selling Charity Day tickets and gets to keep 100% of the proceeds – that’s $5 per ticket sold! In-store sales of Charity Day tickets are divided among charities and churches that send representatives to greet and sell tickets on the day of the event. Thanks to Joyce Anne for volunteering to represent GRAC and work that morning! Everyone needs a $5 ticket to shop. Ticket holders will get 20-70% off most purchases, and there will be savings on rarely discounted brands. Ticket holders will also get $5 off their first purchase. The sale is Saturday, November 4 from 6:00-10:00am at all local area Belk stores. If you are interested in purchasing tickets for the sale, then please contact Joyce Anne Porter at japorter@bellsouth.net.

“With one in seven Americans and one in eight Canadians facing hunger, it goes beyond not having enough food to eat.”

“FULL PLATES. HEARTS. MINDS.” The components of our Alpha Gamma Delta philanthropy activities are serving and fundraising. Through hands-on activities we give back to our communities through service. We make donations to organizations through fundraising. The focus of Alpha Gamma Delta’s philanthropy is fighting hunger. With one in seven Americans and one in eight Canadians facing hunger, it goes beyond not having enough food to eat. “It impacts behavior, well-being, your ability to focus and much more. When a person is well fed, they are happier and they are able to learn more and focus on work or school.” This is a real problem that impacts our communities and goes across all ages and races. “By fighting hunger with these things in mind, we are able to make an impact on not only providing food for those in need, but filling their hearts and minds as well.” It also is an area in which we can truly contribute to the world’s work in the community where we are placed.

Alpha Gamma Delta has partnered with Feeding America and Meals on Wheels to help fight hunger in North America. In addition to supporting our foundation, Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation, “the Fraternity also encourages all sisters to engage in volunteer service activities related to fighting hunger on your campuses and in your communities.” https:// alphagammadelta.org/ fighting-hunger/
