News from the Greater Raleigh Alumnae Chapter of Alpha Gamma Delta

Fall 2018 Volume 71, Issue 1

THE ECHO PRESIDENT’S LETTER Dear Sisters, The 2017-18 year was another successful one for the Greater Raleigh Alumnae Chapter (GRAC). We remain in Good Standing and our chapter received the “Living with Purpose” distinction, which is the highest level in the Alumnae Recognition Program. I want to thank all our sisters who have given their time and shared their talents to help make our chapter such a great place to gather in sisterhood. We also had another excellent year when it comes to philanthropy! We participated in the JDRF One walk and donated the proceeds from our pecan sale fundraiser to Backpack buddies, Shepherd’s Table, American Diabetes Association - Camp Carolina Trails, JDRF, and Crayons to Calculators. We celebrated IRD with one of our adopted chapters, Nu Gamma – East Carolina University (ECU) on April 21st at their beautiful newly renovated home in Greenville, NC. The theme was “Coming Together to Fight Hunger.” Our guest speaker was Jarmichael Harris, ECU collegiate recovery community coordinator. Mr. Harris shared information with us about ECU’s Purple Pantry (food pantry) and other support activities offered to ECU students. Over the summer, I was honored to serve as Greater Raleigh Alumnae Chapter’s (GRAC) delegate for the at Alpha Gamma Delta’s 50th International Convention in San Antonio, TX held June 28 th-30th. Our chapter was well recognized at Convention. First, GRAC was recognized as a Jewel chapter for raising a $1,000 or more for the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation for the past year. During the Inspire and Impact Luncheon, we received the Joy of Service Award and a $100 cash award. GRAC received two more awards at the Awards Banquet, the Adopt-A-Chapter Award and the Alumnae Annulet Award, the latter is the highest alumnae chapter honor. This recognition came with $200 cash awards. In addition, four GRAC members received Honors of Epsilon Pi: Arc - Lisa Pinyan Poole, Arc with Diamond – Carrie Wheeler Doriguzzi and Allison Hinson, Arc with Diamonds and Pearl – Jan Thorpe White. Another personally touching moment of Convention for me occurred with the 2018-20 officer installation. I was thrilled to see my ΓA chapter sister, Lee Woodham Langub, installed as International President. Lee was my undergraduate president and initiated me into Alpha Gamma Delta. Thank you to all of your who worked so hard to make this such a successful biennium for GRAC and Alpha Gamma Delta!

While summer draws to a close, we reflect on Hurricane Florence’s impact. Thankfully the effects of the hurricane were relatively minor for the greater Raleigh area, our thoughts do go out to our sisters and their families who were impacted by the storm. If you or any sisters that you know are in need of emergency assistance, please check out of Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation Disaster Relief Grants at https:// alphagammadeltafoundation.org/grants/disaster-relief/. Or if you want to help other sisters in need, I encourage you to please consider making a gift to our Foundation at https:// alphagammadeltafoundation.org/donate/.

As a pre-convention activity, I along with other Alpha Gams volunteered at the San Antonio Food Bank. We made ~2,000 meals for San Antonio children. Alpha Gamma Delta also donated $1,650, which would make another 11,550 meals. The opening session included introductions and a Flag Parade of the 6 chapters installed during the biennium. Our adopted chapter’s (NΓ –

CONVENTION, CONT’D East Carolina University) president, Makenzie Evans carried their flag. We then had breakout sessions. The first session, I attended, “Good Standing or Outstanding,” was an open discussion of ideas for successful alumnae events, connecting with collegiate seniors sooner, fundraising opportunities, philanthropic efforts, alumnae recruitment, and sisterhood activities. At this session, I met Judith Hand, ΓE chapter advisor from 1961-65 and EC chair from 1962-65. She recalled many of our ΓE sisters and sent her regards. The next session I attended was “Prioritizing Philanthropic Partners” with representatives from The Food Bank and Meals on Wheels. Volunteer ideas included community education on cooking, hands-on activities with other local alumni groups, and writing fundraiser thank you notes to help undergraduate chapters. That evening, we boarded buses to Knibbe Ranch in Spring Branch, TX, where we enjoyed an authentic TX BBQ dinner, armadillo races, country line dance lessons and fireworks. The next day, the Foundation hosted a Jewel chapter breakfast. A business session followed with International Council biennual progress reports. A State of the Fraternity video highlighted Alpha Gamma Delta’s achievements. Four resolutions were passed to amend the proposed Constitution and Standing Rules. Subsequently, the Inspire and Impact Luncheon honored outstanding service and financial contribution to Foundation. I then attended a breakout session on “Connecting with College Seniors Sooner.” We heard about Generation Z and had a brainstorming session on how engage more with soon-to-be alumnae. A memorial service was held for those who entered Chapter Grand during the biennium. Then we initiated 7 new alumnae members. The Honors of Epsilon Pi Banquet and ceremony ended the day.

At the final day’s breakfast, our Regional Area Coordinator and alumnae chapter presidents shared ideas on how to improve and maintain our chapters. During our business session, we received and reviewed the new Alpha Experience book, given to all new members. Distinguished Citizen Awards were presented to Andrea Canning, Sharon Downey Johnston and Sonnee Stallman Weedon. Then keynote speaker, Chef Jeff Henderson spoke on his experiences growing up, turning criminal, prison life and becoming a success. Afterwards, the Awards Banquet and 2018-20 officer installation were held. Our new International President, Lee Woodham Langub spoke on how Alpha Gamma Delta can be the golden thread in our lives, how we can inspire others, and impact the world. In addition, the Foundation appreciation roses sale raised $29,415. During the evening’s Feast of Roses Banquet, the dimly room was illuminated as more than 800 sisters’ tapers were lit with chapter roll call. The convention closed with the Living Circle and singing some of the Fraternity’s favorite songs.
