THE ECHO PRESIDENT’S LETTER Dear Sisters, I hope you are enjoying the lovely spring weather. Our chapter has had a very busy winter and we are looking forward to our upcoming events, which include our IRD brunch in April and annual potluck/officer installation in May. We had a November social at the Durham Life and Science Museum. It was an afterhours event on Fermentology, where we investigated the science behind our favorite fermentables with some of North Carolina’s best brewers and chefs.

In December we gathered for our annual holiday celebration and gift exchange at the home of Charity Metz Schuller.

Elsie Manny Eads hosted our January meeting at the Springmoor Retirement Community where Jeanette Drane Benjey gave a slideshow presentation of her Mediterranean cruise.

We filled out Valentine’s Day cards and put together care packages for our Adopt-AChapters, Theta Mu and Theta Omicron.

In February we met at the home of Jan Thorpe White and had a memorial service for Daphne Adams Ashworth. It was wonderful to see her husband Ralph in attendance. Jean Campbell Burroughs gave a beautiful eulogy and others spoke about their fond memories.

Jean Campbell Burroughs also gave a program about the Honors of Epsilon Pi as well as other awards and their requirements. Members donated canned goods to the Backpack Buddies program at Athens Drive High School.

We have had a few Lunch Bunch get-togethers at Vivace, Midtown Grille and Coquette.

Our Junior Circle visited the Christmas Carousel Holiday Gift Market at the NC State Fairgrounds, First Night in Raleigh on New Year’s Eve, and the Morehead Planetarium and Science Center. Our Junior Circle is not only for our younger members but also for the “young at heart.”

This banquet recognized those sisters who achieved a high GPA for the Fall 2017 semester. We presented awards, gave speeches, had a tour of the house, and met with several of their members. It was so much fun to share Alpha Gam experiences with a brand-new chapter! I look forward to visiting the house again on Saturday, April 21st as GRAC and Nu Gamma share the celebration of International Reunion Day! The theme this year is “Coming Together to Fight Hunger.” More details about this can be found inside this issue – we hope you can attend!

SISTER NEWS Michelle Kenney Alexander (ΓΟ ‘05) passed her Project Management Professional (PMP) certification exam.

Jacquelyn “Jacque” Goodwin Burgess (ΓΕ ‘48) celebrated her 90th birthday on February 23. Jacque is an active member of GRAC.

Stephanie Mancini Rutter (BΞ ‘05) and her husband, Charlie, welcomed a son, Charles Henry Rutter, on November 20, 2017. Henry weighed 8 pounds 12 ounces and was 22 inches long.

The Annie Morgan McLeod scholarship was endowed in 2017. Annie was a sister who was killed in a car accident by a drunk driver. GRAC has made donations over the years to help fund this endowment. One of Theta Mu’s members, Adriana Castille, has been serving as an Alpha Gamma Delta 20172018 Leadership Consultant. On March 24th, our Theta Mu sisters initiated new members.

Theta Mu Spring 2018 New Members

Theta Omicron (Western Carolina University) Theta Omicron welcomed 21 new members on March 17th. Members have been active in a number of causes including attendance at the Association of Fraternal Leadership & Values Social Good Summit: A Startup Workshop for People Who Want to Change the World in Indianapolis, the Moral March in Raleigh and North Carolina Association of Residence Halls Conference at Meredith College in Raleigh.

CHAPTER GRAND Daphne Adams Ashworth (ΓΕ ‘54) passed away peacefully at home following a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s on Friday, January 19, 2018.

Daphne’s husband, Ralph, attended GRAC’s February meeting in which we held the Alpha Gamma Delta Memorial Service in Daphne’s honor.

PURPLE PANTRY East Carolina University (ECU) has created a new food pantry to aide college students in need. The food pantry opened at the beginning of this semester and is a collaborative effort between the ECU Dean of Students Office, the Collegiate Recovery Center and the Center for Leadership and Civic Engagement on campus. Specifically, the food pantry (known as the “Purple Pantry”) will be sponsored by the Collegiate Recovery Center.

This was born out of an idea by a junior anthropology major, Ashton Fisher, based on some volunteer work she does with a local homeless shelter. Jarmichael Harris, coordinator of the Collegiate Recovery Community, indicated that ECU’s counselors have noted that food and security often come up in counseling sessions with students. ECU was able to put together a plan after visiting North Carolina State University to see how their food pantry operation worked.

Harris pointed out that it is a misconception to think if a student can afford college that they can afford food. Purple Pantry will help students focus on their studies rather than getting their next meals. http://www.theeastcarolinian.com/news/article_6bc749a2-d3c9-11e7-b7a39b0b4b06614a.html

IRD 2018: COMING TOGETHER TO FIGHT HUNGER GRAC will join Nu Gamma chapter at East Carolina University for a celebration of IRD at their new house. Nu Gamma was installed on November 12, 2017. Nu Gamma brings the total of number of Alpha Gam chapters in NC to seven with five active and two inactive.

Those attending IRD should bring any of the following items for donation to Purple Pantry: Canned Fruits, Vegetables, Meat, and Soup (Pop-top cans and low sodium a plus!)
