The Afton Chemical Grease Portfolio

Multi-functional Componentry

Multi-functional componentry is a building block approach that combines several performance attributes into a single product. This is an efficient and increasingly popular way to streamline your grease portfolio. The right system can save time and money while maintaining flexibility in creating a full grease product line – from core to enhanced performance.

Building Blocks

Building blocks offer a flexible approach to constructing your finished grease formulation. Starting with an appropriate foundation – from core to enhanced –additional performance can be “dialed in” to meet the goals of your custom grease needs.

High Performance Additives

High performance additives are traditionally used by grease formulators to add individual performance characteristics to their finished greases, maintaining maximum flexibility and uniqueness of formulations.

Anti-wear (AW) and Extreme Pressure (EP) Additives

AW characteristics and protection against EP regimes are important performance characteristics that need to be incorporated in greases for various applications. Afton offers many different options for the formulator seeking to strike the right balance between structural stability, surface activity, performance and cost.

Corrosion Inhibition (CI)

Corrosion inhibition is critical in many grease applications. From testing in salt spray to Emcor dynamic bearings to yellow metal protection, Afton has a wide range of options to allow maximum synergy while minimizing the impact on thickener structure and other important performance criteria.

High Temperature

Grease manufacturers need special additives to meet the unique demands of applications for which heat is a critical variable. Afton offers a range of chemistry designed to meet the stringent needs of your individual grease formulations. From increasing oxidation resistance to improving structural stability at high temperatures, these components can help you meet the distinctive challenges of grease formulating.

Multi-functional Componentry

ENHANCED PERFORMANCE

Robust performance package, provides excellent fortification against corrosion and oxidation combined with EP and AW protection. This system can be used to produce high temperature, multipurpose greases such as those used in chassis and wheel bearings.

Ashless economic performance package, provides good protection against EP and AW while also providing oxidation and corrosion resistance necessary in a fullyformulated, multipurpose grease suitable for use at higher temperatures.

These enhanced performance packages offer an efficient and convenient approach to streamlining grease formulations. The right system can save time and money while maintaining your flexibility and providing targeted performance.

High Performance Additives

Anti-wear (AW) and Extreme Pressure (EP) Additives

| Zinc DialkylDithioPhosphate

(ZDDP)

ZDDP is an effective and cost efficient way for a grease formulator to reduce wear and oxidation in a wide range of grease formulations.

HiTEC® 7197G (C4/C5/C8)

HiTEC® 55450 (C3/C4/C8)

HiTEC® 7169 (C3/C6)

Excellent AW protection combined with antioxidancy.

Wider functional temperature range for protection by degradation of ZDDP.

Provides AW and oxidation protection at lower temperatures.

SECONDARY ALCOHOLS PRIMARY ALCOHOLS

Zinc complexity - all zincs aren’t created equal

• ZDDP requires partial decomposition to deposit Zn, P and S on the metal surface.

• The type, branching and chain length of the alcohol used can affect performance in several ways.

ZDDPs made from secondary alcohols decompose more easily than those made from primary alcohols providing anti-wear protection at lower temperatures.

Antioxidant (and EP) performance requires that sulfur be “released”; this process is made more difficult in ZDDPs made with longer alcohols.

• Branching of the alcohol groups will also affect the stability of the ZDDP in both positive and negative ways further complicating formulation challenges.

| Sulfur Extreme Pressure (EP) Sources

Different sulfur-based chemistries are important for giving grease formulations added protection under EP conditions.

Corrosion Inhibition (CI)

| Rust Inhibitors

Protection against rust attack on ferrous parts is critical in many grease applications. From static to salt spray to dynamic bearings, Afton has a full slate of corrosion inhibitors designed to cost-effectively enhance your grease’s performance in these critical areas while maintaining grease stability, extreme pressure and wear protection.

• Succinate ester

HiTEC® 559

• Acidic inhibitor, used at low treat, good synergy with other CIs.

HiTEC® 538

• Poly ester succinimide

• Neutral inhibitor, good rust protection and friction reduction, synergistic

HiTEC® 614

• Low TBN calcium sulfonate

• Excellent in protecting against corrosive/ humid conditions such as ASTM B117 salt fog test

Formulating with rust inhibitors

Why don’t all additives behave the same?

Synergy

To meet the demands of severely corrosive conditions (such as 3% NaCl), individual rust inhibitors can offer some protection at higher treat rates. However, synergistic combinations can often be identified that can lower overall treat rate and cost.

Thickener Interaction

The complexities inherent in grease formulating include variations in grease thickener chemistry and manufacturing conditions which can have an enormous impact on additive effectiveness – especially with regard to interactions with polar additives such as rust inhibitors.

8

| Yellow Metal Protection

Well-formulated grease products should not be chemically aggressive to parts containing yellow metals.

High Performance Additives

• Maximum flexibility

• Customized speciality formulations

• Top treat performance enhancement

Ashless alkyl thiadiazole is an excellent sulfur scavenger and metal passivator when used in greases at low treat rates. It also contributes to EP properties and antioxidancy especially at higher concentrations.

High Temperature

From increasing oxidation resistance to improving structural stability under thermal stress, these additives can help you gain specific performance benefits that will help you meet the unique challenges of developing a high temperature grease formulation.

Syngergistic antioxidant combination

• Designed to extend grease life in high temperature applications by providing resistance against oxidation, and protecting grease stability

• Can be used to boost antioxidant capability of multifunctional componentry

Boronated succinimide dispersants

• Gives antiwear protection and extreme pressure performance

• Mitigates the effects of deposits due to oxidation

• Provides the structural benefits of a PIB thickener

• Can deliver dropping point enhancement in some thickener systems
