TECHNICAL BULLETIN NLGI's High-Performance Multiuse (HPM) Grease Specifications Let Afton help you formulate to meet NLGI’s newest set of grease specifications. NLGI currently certifies the quality of commercial lubricating grease formulations through their Certification Mark program. This certification program has provided an internationally-recognized grease specification for grease manufacturers, users and consumers since 1989. Although this program was originated to specify quality for greases used in automotive chasses and wheel bearings, GC-LB Mark is used by many grease marketers as an indication of a high-quality grease and is used in many different applications. NLGI is finalizing a new specification to supplement GC-LB with a set of classifications for High-Performance Multiuse (HPM) greases. This HPM specification focuses on specific sets of performance areas that may be common to many applications so that the appropriate performance subcategories can be chosen by end-users to match their particular needs. Recognizing the diverse operating conditions that lubricating grease encounters, a number of subcategories are envisioned to aid in product selection. The performance subcategories that have been decided on for the first set of specifications are: water resistance (WR), high load carrying capacity (HL), salt water corrosion resistance (CR), and low temperature performance (LT). Each subcategory represents enhanced performance in a specific performance area in addition to the core HPM attributes (eg. HPM+CR, or HPM + HL/WR). These subcategories are shown in detail in the attached table (reverse) with the proposed limits for each of the performance tests. Additional subcategories may be developed in the future to address other common lubricating grease needs. Fully formulated greases would be certified and audited by NLGI against one or more of these categories allowing the grease marketer to display the appropriate HPM mark on their packaging. NLGI member & non-member companies may use the sample "HPM Core logo" which can be used with discretion for use with internal or external educational and marketing purposes. All HPM products must be approved before they can be branded with the official HPM certification mark, provided by NLGI. Afton presents this sample HPM Core logo, provided by NLGI, simply for educational purposes.
