Afrovibes Festival 2023 - Liquid Traces

EAST AFRICAN BOLERO Dans | Rwanda | 2021 Choreografie Wesley Ruzibiza Choreograaf Wesley Ruzibiza liet de opzwepende muziek van Ravel’s Bolero los en vormde deze om tot een mythisch Afrikaans scheppingsverhaal.

Zijn East African Bolero begint met de ijle klanken van Ravel, de stem van een verteller over het scheppingsverhaal en elektronische muziek door Chandresh Kudwa. Acht dansers uit Rwanda, Burundi en Tanzania smelten de polyfonie van traditionele dansen uit Oost Afrika samen tot een eigentijdse moderne dans op het ritme van de Bolero. Met East African Bolero combineert Ruzibiza de kracht van Afrikaanse spiritualiteit met de abstractie van moderne dans. Op het raakvlak van Oost-Afrikaanse traditionele dansen en moderne dans blaast hij de kracht van mythen in de adembenemende ritmes van Ravel.

THE BLACK CIRCUS OF THE REPUBLIC OF BANTU Theater | Zuid-Afrika | 2022 Regie Princess Rose Zinzi Mhlongo The Black Circus of the Republic of Bantu legt de gewelddadige en beschamende erfenis bloot van etnologische tentoonstellingen (zoals menselijke dierentuinen) die in de 19e eeuw populair waren in de westerse samenleving. De Zuid-Afrikaanse performer en kunstenaar Albert Khoza onderzoekt tijdens de voorstelling het effect van de imperiale en koloniale blik op zwarte lichamen. Hoe is deze blik vandaag de dag nog steeds voelbaar? Khoza gaat de confrontatie aan met de schoonheid en trots van zijn zwarte, niet-witte, niet-slanke lichaam. Hij onderzoekt de voortdurende pijn van historisch en systematisch racisme en creëert ruimte voor collectieve genezing en een kans om waardigheid terug te winnen.

The Black Circus of the Republic of Bantu exposes the violent and shameful legacy of ethnological displays (such as human zoos and exhibitions) that were popular in Western society in the 19th century. The South African artist/ performer Albert Khoza explores in his performance the effect of the imperial and colonial gaze on Black bodies. How is this gaze still felt today? Khoza confronts us with the ethnic beauty and pride of his black, non-white, and non-slender body. He examines the ongoing pain of historical and continuing racism and creates a space for collective healing and an opportunity for dignity to be reclaimed.

The Netherlands marks 2023 as a commemorative year for the end of slavery by the Netherlands.

Afrovibes expresses this with the theme Liquid Traces. The oceans are central to this as protagonists. The waters of the oceans served as ancient migration routes for trade and carrying people away from their territories. The oceans harbour countless memories and traces of colonial voyages but are also a connecting force between cultures and continents. Water performs a poetic function and appears in healing rituals and ceremonies in many African cultures. Liquid Traces and the power of water evokes memories of our (colonial) past, traces of slavery and attempts to come to terms with our past.

Choreographer Wesley Ruzibiza took the exhilarating music of Ravel’s Bolero and transformed it into a mythical African story of creation. His East African Bolero begins with ethereal sounds from Ravel’s Bolero, the voice of a narrator about the tale of creation and electronic music by Chandresh Kudwa. Eight dancers from Rwanda, Burundi and Tanzania fuse the polyphony in traditional East African dances into a contemporary modern dance set to the rhythm of the Bolero. With East African Bolero Ruzibiza’s combines the power of African spirituality with the abstraction of modern dance. At the crossroads of East African traditional dances and modern dance, he blows the power of myths into the breathtaking rhythms of Ravel.

Nederland markeert 2023 als een herdenkingsjaar voor het einde van de slavernij door Nederland.

Afrovibes geeft hier vorm aan met het thema Liquid Traces | Vloeibare Sporen. De oceanen staan hierin centraal als hoofdrolspelers. Het water van de oceanen diende als eeuwenoude trekroutes voor handel en het wegvoeren van mensen uit hun gebieden. De oceanen herbergen talloze herinneringen en sporen aan koloniale reizen, maar zijn ook een verbindende kracht tussen culturen en continenten. Water vervult een poëtische functie en komt voor in genezingsrituelen en ceremonies in veel Afrikaanse culturen. Liquid Traces en de kracht van het water roept de herinneringen op aan ons (koloniale) verleden, de sporen van slavernij en de pogingen in het reine met ons verleden te komen.

Afrikan Party van choreograaf Oulouy is een futuristische ode aan Afrika.

Een urban dance party over de diversiteit aan culturen van het Afrikaanse continent. De voorstelling vertelt het verhaal van een Afrikaans kind uit 2090, geboren en getogen in de Verenigde Staten van Afrika. Een plek vol met verschillende culturen, tradities, rituelen en vieringen die dit kind verbinden met zijn verleden, zijn heden en zijn toekomst. Oulouy neemt ons mee in een viering van dit leven, waarbij hij elke mijlpaal in de reis van het kind van geboorte tot dood belicht. De voorstelling is een waar dans- en theaterfestijn vol humor, poëzie en levenslust.

Oulouy takes us into a celebration of this life, highlighting each milestone in the child’s journey from birth to death. In Black Privilege richt Mamela Nyamza zich op de hypocriete structuur van onze samenleving waarin we elkaar beoordelen op basis van ras, geslacht, seksuele geaardheid en klasse. Tijdens de performance wisselt ze haar spel af tussen rituelen waarin ze sterke vrouwen uit het verleden oproept en de verbeelding van een rechtszaak waarin ze machtsfiguren ter verantwoording roept voor hun daden in het verleden. Voor Nyamza is Black Privilege het recht van een zwarte vrouw te heersen, af te breken, haar eigen weg te vinden.

In Black Privilege, Nyamza focuses on the hypocritical structure of our society in which we judge each other based on race, gender, sexual orientation, and class. During the performance, she alternates her play between rituals in which she evokes strong women from the past and the depiction of a court case in which she calls power figures to account for their past actions. For Nyamza, Black Privilege is a black woman’s right to rule, to break down, to find her own way.

DEUS NOS ACUDI Dans | Mozambique | 2022 Choreografie Pak Ndjamena In Deus Nos Acudi onderzoekt choreograaf Pak Ndjamena hoe tradities en de culturele context waarin wij leven onze houding tegenover anderen bepalen. Wat zijn onze fysieke en emotionele mogelijkheden om vrijheid en geborgenheid te vinden in een wereld vol met tradities, symbolen, consumptiecultuur en raciale verschillen? Ndjamena stelt zich de vraag of ons lichaam vrij is of gebonden. Is ons lichaam origineel en autonoom of worden de ervaringen en de identiteit van ons lichaam beïnvloed door het culturele patroon waarin wij ons bevinden? In hoeverre wordt ons lichaam in zijn beweging, zijn houding en zijn reactie op de omgeving beïnvloedt door tradities, mondelinge overleveringen, symbolen en teksten die ons dagelijks omringen.

In Deus Nos Acudi choreographer Pak Ndjamena explores how traditions determine our attitudes towards others. What are our physical and emotional possibilities of finding freedom and security in a world of traditions, symbols, consumer culture and racial differences. Ndjamena asks himself the question whether our body is free or is it controlled and bound. Is our body original and autonomous or are our body’s experiences and identity influenced by the cultural pattern in which we find ourselves. To what extent is our body influenced in its movements, posture, and reactions to the environment by traditions, oral traditions, symbols, and manuscripts that surround us daily.

RISE AND FALL Dans | Tanzania | 2021 Choreografie Sisti Richard Mushi Choreograaf Sisti Mushi laat met het duet Rise and Fall zien dat elk levenspad opofferingen kent om dromen te kunnen realiseren. Tijdens de voorstelling nemen twee dansers ons mee op reis en volgen we hun strijd om hun dromen te kunnen volgen. Ze onderzoeken hoe ze steun en zorgzaamheid voor hun dromenjacht kunnen vinden bij de mensen om hen heen. Met humor laten ze de betekenis van steun zien, het belang om elkaar bij te staan en letterlijk ‘op te heffen’ in de donkerste momenten.

Rise en Fall herinnert ons eraan dat we samen bijna elke moeilijke situatie om kunnen zetten in magie!

The Tanzanian choreographer Sisti Mushi shows in the duet Rise and Fall that every path in life knows sacrifices to realise dreams. In the performance two dancers takes us on a journey and we follow their struggle to make their dreams come true. They explore how they can find support and caring from those around them for the pursuit of their dreams. With humour they show the meaning of support, the importance of standing by one another and literally ‘lifting up’ in their darkest moments. Rise and Fall reminds us that almost any difficult situation can be turned into magic by sharing with others!

In Unbreakable vertellen de dansers van Soweto Skeleton Movers met een combinatie van Zuid-Afrikaanse streetdance (Pantsula), ‘bone breaking‘, Afrohouse, Amapiano beats, humor en indrukwekkende visuals hun persoonlijke levensverhalen. Ondanks tegenslagen en verleidingen die hun pad kruisten zijn deze dansers ‘unbreakable’. Ze brengen een krachtige mix van zang, straatscenes, visuals en hun eigen skeleton pantsule. Unbreakable is een samenwerking tussen Rotterdams choreograaf Lloyd Marengo, de Londense theaterregisseur Jonzi D en de Soweto Skeleton Movers uit Johannesburg, Zuid-Afrika.

Theater | Guinee, Frankrijk | 2021 Regie Hakim Bah In 1999 werd de jonge immigrant Amadou Diallo uit Guinee in New York doodgeschoten door vier witte politieagenten. Hij toonde niet snel genoeg zijn identiteitsbewijs toen ze daar om vroegen. In het licht van de dood van George Floyd en de opkomst van Black Lives Matter kijkt regisseur en acteur Bah terug op deze ‘andere blunder’ van de politie. Hij stelt een samenleving aan de kaak waarin zwarte mensen het risico lopen doelwit te worden van institutioneel racisme en geweld. Terwijl Bah zijn poëtische teksten rapt, begeleidt acrobaat Juan Tula hem met zijn Cyr Wiel; een metafoor voor de zittende macht en het institutioneel geweld tegen zwarte mensen. Live muziek van Arthur Gillette roept de sfeer op van New York van het zerotolerance beleid van burgermeester Rudy Giuliani.

In If our Ancestors could speak verkennen de dansers van SboNdaba Dance Company de geschiedenis van de oudste menselijke bewoners van Zuidelijk Afrika; de Khoisan. Tegen het einde van de 17e eeuw kwam het grootste deel van de Westkaap in Zuid-Afrika onder Nederlandse controle. De Khoisan werden onteigend, uitgeroeid of tot slaaf gemaakt. Ze werden gedwongen om te werken op boerderijen samen met nieuwkomers, slaven die van ver over de oceanen naar de Kaap waren vervoerd. Dit zijn de voorouders van de gemarginaliseerde mensen in Zuid-Afrika die in barre omstandigheden leven in de Cape Flats en de townships. Armoede viert hoogtij onder hen, maar de dansers van SboNdaba Dance Company laten zien dat het veerkrachtige overlevers zijn!

Despite setbacks and temptations that crossed their path, these dancers are ‘unbreakable’. They perform a powerful mix of vocals, street scenes, visuals, and their own skeleton armour. Unbreakable is a collaboration between Rotterdam choreographer Lloyd Marengo, London-based theatre director Jonzi D and the Soweto Skeleton Movers from Johannesburg, South Africa.

DARKMATTER Dans | Theater | Nederland | 2022 Choreografie Cherish Menzo Cherish Menzo en Camilo Mejía Cortés trekken in DARKMATTER ogenschijnlijk herkenbare beelden uit elkaar en kneden deze tot een geheel eigen dansen bewegingstaal. Reis af naar het gitzwarte, punky en vervreemdende DARKMATTER-universum waar de mogelijkheden van het lichaam tot het maximale worden opgerekt. Voor DARKMATTER put Menzo uit de hiphopen rapcultuur, posthumanisme en afrofuturisme. Om haar universum te creëren vond Menzo inspiratie in de ruimte. In donkere materie, waar sterren en zwarte gaten elkaar ontmoeten en met elkaar botsen. Menzo rekt de bewegingstaal op door de Chopped & Screwed-methode toe te passen, een remixtechniek binnen de hiphopmuziek waarbij het tempo sterk wordt teruggedraaid.

DARKMATTER zit in de officiële jury selectie van het Nederlands Theater festival 2023 en Het TheaterFestival 2023 (België). Tevens genomineerd voor de VSCD Mime/Performance Prijs 2023.

Dans- en poppentheater geïnspireerd op West-Afrikaanse mythen en rituelen.‘Reclaim de kracht van de voorouders’. Nom.Nos vermengt dansers, poppen, mythes en rituelen rond leven en dood, heden en verleden, in een nieuwe kijk op ons koloniale verleden. Waar liggen de roots, welke geschiedenissen van vóór de kolonisatie kunnen en moeten er worden verteld? De voorstelling schijnt licht op het Nederlandse en het wereldwijde koloniale verleden; welke invloed heeft deze geschiedenis op hoe we met elkaar en de wereld omgaan? Moving Beyond Bro! is a musical choreography about brotherhood, based on the stories recorded by Alioune Diagne of young men in Senegal who dream to migrate to Europe. Together with Joris Buizer and keyboard player Thomas Lotgering he explores brotherhood in a globalising world and in relation to the place they both belong to, The Netherlands and Senegal. Alioune Diagne explores an African expression of brotherhood and belonging from his African context and with crossovers between dance and visual art. Joris Buizer explores brotherhood and identity from his context as a young Dutch maker working with rap and spoken word. This performance is the third part in a triptych in which African and Dutch makers create new work.

Moving Beyond Bro! is een muzikale choreografie over broederschap, gebaseerd op de verhalen die Alioune Diagne optekende van jonge mannen in Senegal die dromen om naar Europa te migreren. Samen met Joris Buizer en toetsenist Thomas Lotgering onderzoeken zij wat broederschap betekent in een globaliserende wereld en in relatie tot de plek waartoe zij behoren, Nederland en Senegal. Alioune Diagne verkent vanuit zijn Afrikaanse context en met cross-overs tussen dans en beeldende kunst een Afrikaanse expressie van broederschap en verbondenheid. Joris Buizer verkent broederschap vanuit zijn context als jonge Nederlandse maker die werkt met rap en spoken word. Deze voorstelling is het derde deel in een drieluik waarin Afrikaanse en Nederlandse makers nieuw werk maken.

In If our Ancestors could speak, the dancers of SboNdaba Dance Company explore the history of the oldest human inhabitants of Southern Africa: the Khoisan. Their story begins centuries ago at a time when people were free to hunt in their own land. Towards the end of the 17th century, most of the Western Cape in South Africa came under Dutch control. The Khoisan were dispossessed, exterminated, or enslaved. They were forced to work on farms along with new arrivals, slaves who had been transported to the Cape from far across the oceans. These are the ancestors of South Africa’s marginalised people living in harsh conditions in the Cape Flats and townships. Poverty reigns supreme among them, but the dancers of SboNdaba Dance Company show that they are resilient survivors!

In 1999, in New York, a young immigrant from Guinea, Amadou Diallo, was shot dead by four white police officers. He did not show his ID quickly enough when they asked for it. Following the death of George Floyd and the rise of Black Lives Matter, Guinea-French director and actor Hakim Bah looks back at this ‘other blunder’ by the police. He denounces a society in which black people are at risk of becoming targets of institutional racism and violence. While Hakim Bah almost raps his poetic lyrics, acrobat Juan Tula accompanies him with his Cyr Wheel, a metaphor for incumbency and institutional violence against black people. The live music of Arthur Gillette’s evokes the ambience of New York from the era of mayor Rudy Giuliani’s zerotolerance policy.

KOULOUNISATION Theater | Algerije, België | 2022 Concept Salim Djaferi Regie Laurie Fouvet Toen acteur Salim Djaferi in 2018 naar Algiers trok, ging hij in boekenwinkels op zoek naar boeken over de Algerijnse oorlog. Hij kwam met lege handen thuis: er waren geen boeken over de Algerijnse oorlog. Hij kreeg als tip dat hij wellicht op de afdeling Revolutie kon zoeken. Een oorlog voor sommigen, een revolutie voor anderen. Vastbesloten de situatie te begrijpen gaat Djaferi op onderzoek uit. Koulounisation houdt het midden tussen reportage, intiem verhaal en historisch onderzoek. In de vorm van een conference traceert Djaferi de draad van de Frans-Algerijnse geschiedenis. Zijn humor is die van een minzame glimlach – die uitnodigt tot reflectie, afstand en kritiek.

When actor Salim Djaferi went to Algiers in 2018, he went to bookstores looking for books on the Algerian war. He came back home empty-handed, not finding a single rack on the Algerian war. He was told that he might finds books on the subject under the heading ‘Revolution’. A war to some, a revolution to others. Determined to understand the situation, Djaferi interviews witnesses and families, consults books and archival documents, collects stories and anecdotes. Koulounisation straddles the line between reportage, intimate narrative, and historical research. In the form of a conference, he traces the thread of French-Algerian history. His humour is that of the affable smile - inviting reflection, distance, and criticism.

In DARKMATTER, Cherish Menzo and Camilo Mejía Cortés pull apart seemingly recognisable images and mould them into a dance and movement language all their own. Travel off into the pitch-black, punky, and alienating DARKMATTER universe where the possibilities of the body are stretched to the maximum. For DARKMATTER, Menzo draws on hip-hop and rap culture, post humanism and Afrofuturism. To create her universe, Menzo found inspiration in space. In dark matter, where stars and black holes meet and collide. Menzo stretches the language of movement by applying the Chopped & Screwed method, a remix technique within hip-hop music in which the tempo is sharply reduced.

DARKMATTER is in the official jury selection Nederlands Theater festival 2023 and Het Theater Festival 2023 (Belgium). Also nominated for the VSCD Mime/ Performance Award 2023.

Sound of Berberia vertelt het verhaal van twee jonge Marokkaanse muzikanten die door Noord-Afrika trekken, op zoek naar de ultieme ‘Amazigh sound’ voor hun nieuwe album. Ze ontmoeten een journaliste die hen overhaalt hun route te wijzigen om met de Touareg in noordelijk Mali te spelen, maar de beweegredenen van de journaliste blijven onduidelijk.

Als ze haar intenties doorkrijgen, is het te laat. Sound of Berberia toont de overeenkomsten en verscheidenheid in muziek, taal en cultuur van de Amazigh-volkeren in Noord-Afrika, de Imazighen. Hun leefgebied strekte zich uit van de Canarische eilanden tot aan de oase Siwa in Egypte en van Tunesië tot aan de Sahel.

Where are the roots, what histories from before the colonization can and should be told? Sound of Berberia tells the story of two young Moroccan musicians travelling through North Africa in search of the ultimate ‘Amazigh sound’ for their new album. They meet a journalist who persuades them to change their route to play with the Touareg in northern Mali, but the journalist’s motives remain unclear. When they realise her intentions, it is too late. Sound of Berberia shows the similarities and diversity in music, language, and culture of the Amazigh peoples of North Africa, the Imazigh people. Their territory stretched from the Canary Islands to the Siwa oasis in Egypt and from Tunisia to the Sahel.

Rrways is de Zuid-Marokkaanse traditie die muziek, zang, poëzie en dans samenbrengt. Fatima Tihihit is al veertig jaar een fenomeen in deze stijl.

Tales of Amazigh vertegenwoordigt de nieuwe generatie met een sleutelrol voor het karakteristieke snaarinstrument ribab. ‘Raïssa’ is de meestertitel die Fatima Tihihit kreeg voor haar zangkunst. Ze zingt in de taal van ZuidMarokko, net als Aziz Ozouss, zanger, violist en ribab-speler van Tales of Amazigh. Hij vormt het duo met percussionist Sjahin During, bekend van de bands Arifa en Namibian Tales.

Rrways is the Southern Moroccan tradition that unites music, song, poetry, and dance. Fatima Tahitit has been a phenomenon in this style for forty years. Tales of Amazigh represents the new generation. with a key role for the characteristic string instrument ribab. ‘Raïssa’ is the master title that Fatima Tihihit was granted for her vocal art. She sings in the language of Southern Morocco, like Aziz Ozouss, singer, violinist and ribab player in Tales of Amazigh. He forms the duo together with percussionist Sjahin During, known from Arifa and Namibian Tales.

FACE TO FACE Film & dans | Congo | 2021-2023 Choreografie & regie Florent Mahoukou

Op een moeilijk keerpunt in zijn persoonlijke en professionele leven keert choreograaf Florent Mahoukou terug naar de stad Pointe Noire waar voor hem alles begon met dans. Zijn geboorteland is weinig veranderd en er wordt de mensen niets geboden om uit de onzekerheid te geraken.

Alleen met informele activiteiten kunnen ze overleven. Face to Face gaat over een zelfonderzoek met een verlangen om het leven te begrijpen, een verlangen waarbij vindingrijkheid grenst aan kunst. Face to Face is een combinatie van een dansfilm en een live performance. De dansfilm speelt zich af op het strand en op straat in de stad Pointe Noir in Congo.

Choreograaf en danser Florent Mahoukou danst live in dialoog met de dansfilm.

THE OCEANIC MARIGOLD BEADS Expositie | Zimbabwe, Zuid-Afrika | 2023 Ontwerp Marigold Beadwork Co-operative & Joni Brenner

De Oceanic Marigold Beads van het Marigold Beadwork Co-operative in Zimbabwe brengt het uitgestrekte kleurenpalet van de oceaan tot leven, niet alleen blauw en groen, maar ook de tinten van zand, de branding, kelp en de open zee en het rood, paars en zwart van de diepste oceaan. De sensuele schittering van de kralen brengt ons in contact met de geschiedenis van het Afrikaanse beadwork en met de oceaan, met de geschiedenis van slavernij en geweld en het vermogen van water om te reinigen en te helen. Een kunstwerk geboren uit vloeibare sporen van de oceaan en dat deze sporen ook weer achterlaat.

The Oceanic Marigold Beads from the Marigold Beadwork Co-operative from Zimbabwe bring to live the vast range of colours of the ocean, not just blue and green, but also the shades of sand, surf, kelp, the open sea, and the red, purple, and black of the deepest ocean. The sensual shimmer of the beads that puts us in touch with the history of African beadwork and with the ocean, with the histories of slavery and violence as well as the capacity of water to cleanse and heal. An artwork that is born out of, and leaves, liquid traces.
