The Modern Rules of Dating Too many kisses on a text, sending a Facebook friend request and taking longer than 15 minutes to respond to a message all put pay to a second date, according to new research. A study exploring the dos and don’ts of dating highlights the rules singletons should adhere to if they want to follow up a first date with a second. Men should be the ones to first send a text after a successful first meeting and women should respond within a quarter of an hour if keen. But when making contact, a maximum of TWO kisses is all that is required – any more and the potential love interest may be put off, any less and you’re in danger of seeming ‘cold’.

texting back straight away is a sign of being ‘too keen’ with the majority saying they’re happy to get right back in contact with a potential love interest.

The study also revealed that locking lips is acceptable at the end of date one – if things have gone well – although a smooch is more likely after the second encounter.

Venturing online is stickier territory. On average, it’s best to wait until some point between the third and fourth dates before sending a Facebook friend request or following them on Twitter.

Jo Hemmings, Behavioural Psychologist said: “The advance of smartphones has made dating both easier, and more difficult. There are countless apps to help people find dates, but the conundrum of how soon to follow someone on social media or get in contact opens up a new layer of pitfalls.”

Half of us say we’ve looked up a potential date online before meeting in person, to get a feel for their personality and see more pictures – and 15 per cent say they’ve cancelled a date after seeing something on social media they didn’t like.

“Our parents may have had nothing more complicated to worry about than when to ring a date up on the landline, but these days there are dozens of methods of communication that all have to be carefully orchestrated.”

When actually on the date, there are countless faux pas to avoid - Don’t get lost talking about yourself, the mistakes you’ve made and your exes. When getting to know someone new they want to know all about you in the present and not who you were in a past relationship.

The study shows that three is the magic number when it comes to the number of dates needed before an overnight stay, although one in 10 say they’ll need over 10 dates to get to that point.

Thankfully, old school dating rules no longer apply, which is probably a good thing, but there are still some guidelines that come in handy in the search for love;

A definite no-no is waiting for the other person to text first. Half of respondents say that they want their potential love interest to make the first contact – which means the other half of daters will be disappointed. It seems that playing it cool may be a thing of the past, too – a third of people reckon they’ll text back within a quarter of an hour, with just 5 percent saying they’d wait as long as two hours. Just 23 percent of people think that

Could these 10 ‘healthy’ foods be stopping you from shedding those extra pounds? to the amount of white rice in each serving. Some outlets do have brown rice sushi which would be better, but that is still a higher serving of starchy carbohydrates to vegetables and protein. It would be healthier to have a fist sized portion of protein alongside half a dinning plates worth of vegetables and a brown rice portion that fits into an espresso coffee mug,” (Shona Wilkinson, Nutritionist at SuperfoodUK.com).

When roaming around the supermarket many of us are adding items that we think will help us reach our weight loss goal and improve our overall health. However, in some case these foods could be contributing to our jeans feeling that bit tighter, or just pumping more of the sweet stuff into our bodies. Our Nutritionists reveal all… “Weight loss is all about cutting calories. This is a myth. All calories are not created equally. Calories from sugar and refined carbohydrates are likely to be stored as fat, whereas calories from healthy fats such as protein and vegetables are to help shed fat. I’d recommend that you skip calorie counting and shed the weight by eating whole, unprocessed foods,” explains Lily Soutter, Nutritionist and weight loss expert at lilysoutternutrition.com.

Honey “Although this is a natural sugar, you should only use it sparingly. Honey is a simple sugar, made up primarily of glucose and fructose, and so it is absorbed into your blood stream quickly hence, it’s not ideal for controlling your blood sugar, or trying to loose weight. The fructose content can be up to 40% in some honeys.” (www.marilynglenville.com).

Friend or Foe?

Rice milk “Plant milks are not only a helpful alternative for those who genuinely cannot tolerate animal milks, but many people drink them because of the trend to consume less

Sushi “The amount of protein and vegetables you actually get in sushi is often very tiny (if not minuscule) in comparison 16

dairy. Rice milk unfortunately is made from white rice which is quite sugary and release its sugar more quickly than brown rice. Instead look for a brown rice brand (they used to be almost non existent) but companies are slowly realising brown is better than white,” explains Shona.

choice – fruit is good for us, right? But a single serving bottle of fruit smoothie can easily contain 25 grams of sugar or more – that’s 5 to 6 teaspoons! Therefore, these drinks are not a great idea especially when trying to shed a few extra pounds. Try making your own smoothie at home with 100g of berries, quarter of a large avocado (or half a small one), a small handful of spinach and topped up with unsweetened almond milk. As well as containing less sugar, it will fill you up for longer and make you less likely to want to snack on sweet foods later in the day,” says Shona.

Tofu burgers “Soya products such as tofu burgers are often touted as being ‘healthier’ than eating meat and commonly used to fulfill protein requirements by vegetarians and vegans. However, soya contains small amounts of plant oestrogens. These may be helpful for women who have menopaused (no longer have a period) and therefore have a diminished supply of natural oestrogen in the body, but women who are still of menstruating age often do not need extra oestrogen. Eating soya products in moderation is preferable, for example once or twice per week, but not all day every day,” says Nutritionist, Cassandra Barns.

Low fat fruit Yogurt “The label might say ‘low fat fruit yogurt’ and so you would think it would help with controlling your weight, but the yogurt can contain up to 8 teaspoons of added refined sugar. Often sugar is the next ingredient after milk in highest amounts in the yogurt. This type of yogurt will be a high GI food, causing your body to release more insulin to deal with the quick rise in blood sugar (blood glucose) and insulin is your fat storing hormone of the body,” says Marilyn. Butter spreads “Butter spreads often combine a smaller amount of butter with buttermilk or other oils, which may seem healthier due to the bad reputation of saturated fats. Those with buttermilk and without vegetable oils may not be a bad option. However, spreads that do contain a higher content of vegetable oils may not be a good choice. In order to make vegetable oils (which are naturally liquid at room temperature) into a solid substance, they may be partially 'hydrogenated'. This process changes the structure of the fat molecules in the oil, and they can turn into an unhealthy form of fat called a ‘trans’ fat. This type of fat is not found naturally in foods or in our body. When we consume these types of fats, they may be incorporated into our cell walls and replace the natural fats that should be there; and when consumed in large quantities, they may be linked to negative effects on our health, for example, for heart health and hormonal balance. Real butter may be high in saturated fat, but At least this is a 'natural' fat. When consumed in moderation as part of a healthy diet, it should not be a cause for concern for most people,” explains Shona.

Cereal bars “They sound so healthy – surely cereal is good for you? Yes cereal itself may be fine – especially if its wholegrain. But many cereal bars contain a great deal of refined sugar and worse – sugar syrups, such as glucose and high fructose corn syrup. These types of sugar syrups travel through our bodies very quickly and are potentially damaging on a cellular level – which isn’t good for immune system and skin for example. Fruit added to cereal bars is often pre-coated in sweet syrups so that just loads on more sugar,” says Shona.

Wholemeal bread “If you want to buy a healthier loaf of bread, make sure you choose one which is made using wholegrain wheat (or ‘whole’ versions of other/mixed grains) as the main ingredient. Those labeled ‘wholemeal’ are usually made from the whole grain. However, avoid those that just say ‘brown’ bread – this can be made from refined grains with colourings added to make it look brown. Also, look carefully at all the ingredients of your bread, even wholemeal loaves, as they can contain less-healthy ingredients such as sugar and salt, potato starch, and stabilisers. Usually, the smaller the number of ingredients, and the fewer chemical-sounding names, the healthier it is!” says Shona.

Muesli “Muesli conjures up a picture of a healthy breakfast and is often accompanied in adverts in a beautiful alpine setting with trees, bright blue skies, clear lakes and clean air. But not all muesli’s are the same, and as with anything you buy you need to read the label and not just go by the hype on the front of the packet. Many can be laden with high amounts of added sugar and salt and this can turn a healthy breakfast into an unhealthy one,” explains Marilyn. Premade smoothies “Shop-bought fruit smoothies can seem like a healthy

So next time you’re at the supermarket ask yourself “am I actually choosing a healthier option?” 17

When it comes to your beauty routine, sleep may be the closest thing there is to a fountain of youth, so with the help of our experts we bring you the “Top to Toe” guide to sleeping soundly and waking up beautiful.

our shut-eye. Lavender has been shown to decrease heart rate and blood pressure, putting you in a relaxed state. Having lavender oils, candles or pillow spray in your room can be a great part of a relaxing bedtime routine.

Organise your mind Hectic and busy lifestyles can often make it impossible to switch off, when we’re worrying about all the jobs we need to do the next day. “At least an hour before bed, put together a ‘to do’ list. This can prevent worries or mulling over tasks for the next day whilst trying to sleep,” advises Lily Soutter, Nutritionist and weight loss expert at www.lilysoutternutrition.com.

Snack to sleep Although a big meal before going to sleep isn’t recommended, having a light bedtime snack can help you drift off easily. “A snack of a complex carbohydrate food before bed, such as a couple of oatcakes, half a slice of rye bread or some rye crackers with a bit of hummus can give a gentle release of energy and help to stop you waking up hungry during the night”, advises Shona Wilkinson, Nutritionist at Superfood UK (www.superfooduk.com).

Switch off for your eyes Most of us are guilty of scrolling through our social media feeds or emails before bed. While we think this can be a relaxing habit before we drift off, it does in fact have the opposite effect, due to the harmful blue light being emitted from electrical devices. “Blocking blue light before bed can transform sleep. Blue light from laptops, phones, ipads and TV’s can trick our brain into thinking that it’s daytime. This can disrupt the brain’s natural sleep-wake cycle leading to a poor night’s sleep.

Relax those toes We all know there’s nothing better than putting our feet up after a long day, and while the thought of a relaxing foot massage sending us off to sleep sounds amazing, it's not always possible. Take matters into your own hands (and feet) and relieve those tired soles with a PediRoller from Carnation Footcare. Simply placing the cooling PediRoller under your foot and rolling it back and forth can work wonders. For an extra anti-inflammatory effect, the PediRoller can be frozen before use, which will help to reduce any swelling and ease the tension in the underside of the feet. Carnation Footcare PediRoller, £9.48, available from Boots or www.carnationfootcare.co.uk.

Regenerate your skin It is a well-known fact that skin repairs itself while we’re sleeping. Make sure you’ve got your pre-bedtime beauty right by applying What Skin Needs’ new Hydrating Facial Serum after cleansing. This sumptuous serum, containing Plantolin and Vitamin E, encourages skin cell renewal whilst targeting scarring and pigmentation, healing skin while you sleep. What Skin Needs’ Hydrating Facial Serum, £17.99, available from www.whatskinneeds.co.uk.

*Bonus Beauty Sleep Tip*: Take a magnesium bath for full body relaxation Magnesium is a calming mineral and has been dubbed ‘natures tranquiliser’. Those who are under a lot of stress are often deficient in magnesium. Magnesium is absorbed well transdermally, making baths a relaxing way to increase our intake. Try some relaxing magnesium bath salts from your local health store.

Breathe easy Whether you’re a silent sleeper or the loud foghorn snorer, what we breathe in while we sleep can affect the quality of

Midlife Madness Beware of the Box Set Apologies in advance but this month I really do need to get something off my chest and so I need to confide in you, of course I know my secret - even my guilty secret - will be safe with you! I guess it’s been going on a month or so now, it’s very intense and I find myself drawn into all sorts of lies to cover my tracks which, of course, was never what I intended. At the outset I thought it was all completely harmless - a bit of a diversion really for those quiet evenings when not much was going on. But as with lots of seemingly harmless diversions it doesn’t seem to take too long before you become embroiled and sort of addicted, you find yourself thinking about it during the day, even cancelling things or making excuses so you can get back to it, and as many of us will have experienced, after the thrill and almost intoxication comes the break -up! But even then I know that it won’t be long before I find myself drawn into another very similar situation.

good drama. It starts out with just an episode a night when I am just getting acquainted with my latest box set, but, as is the way of things, it quickly increases as I get caught up with the characters and the plots and often they leave you fretting about what has happened to your hero or heroine - so you simply have to watch the next episode….and the next…and the next. That is the stage where I think, from my own experience, great care should be exercised. I guess it is ok to watch 2 or even 3 but when you find yourself yawning at 3am still unable to turn off your ‘device’ well you are, quite frankly, straying into the problem area. If you don’t take care the next step will be deciding to take a day off work, or simply spend a whole 24 hours pretty much just eating and watching - isn’t it funny how watching a series also seems to make you want to eat and drink, I do hope it’s not just me! So not only do you run the risk of going square eyed, you could become obese and an alcoholic all though over-indulgence in a box set! Not to mention the dangers of ruined relationships, getting the sack or forgetting, at least for a few days, that you have responsibilities, dogs to walk, cats to feed or even small children to care for!! I think as a society, at the very least, there should be a warning - a bit like on a good book where they’d say it might be difficult to put down - box sets can seriously damage your health unless you are either a very disciplined individual or you have simply chosen a very boring box set.

I am of course talking about the love affair that happens with a box set. As a child and even as an adult, I actually remember a time when there was no Sky or Netflix, illegal streaming sites didn’t exist - in fact I even remember a time before videos so you would literally have to make it home on time to see the latest episode of your favourite drama - I bet lots of people reading this will even remember where they were when they watched JR being shot in Dallas!! Nowadays of course, things have moved on with ever improving technology - but that has changed our habits too. Watching one episode a week is seriously not enough. In fact I just don’t bother, I either record the whole series, or I indulge in a box set. I like to think that as I work away from home sometimes, it is a sort of perk - being stuck in a hotel room doesn’t seem nearly so bad when I have the company of a

20

But even those problems are not nearly so heart rending as that moment when you come to the end of the season and realise that the next season hasn’t been released - or worse still there are no more. I can almost feel myself hyperventilating!! That truly is a box set bereavement and frankly the only cure is start another one IMMEDIATELY.

Learning to

Take Responsibility

I believe we are solely responsible for our choices, and we have to accept the consequences of every deed, word and thought throughout our lifetime. Elizabeth Kubler-Ross

W

e all have moments when we like to dodge responsibility, sometimes things are clearly our responsibility – and others aren’t or shouldn’t be. What I am talking about here is the emotional responsibility we can feel about all sorts of things or even the way we might blame others for situations we find ourselves in or feelings that we have. What I’m concentrating on here is acknowledging the things you can and should take responsibility for and being clear about the things you can’t or shouldn’t take responsibility for - it really will make life a lot easier.

One thing that is often NOT your responsibility is the hand that life deals out. Yes, life is unfair; sometimes bad things happen to good people. You may be responsible for some things - a consequence of an earlier action perhaps but, like the weather, there are a lot of aspects of life that you simply are not responsible for. So don’t waste time telling 24

Take responsibility and initiative for yourself. Stop blaming your circumstances on what you are not able to change. Sonya Teclas

How often do you hear people say that they aren’t happy with their life or that particular things are making them feel a particular way? I have certainly heard it a number of times and the sad thing is that as long as people believe that they can’t change things, because somehow it is all down to other people, then their lives won’t improve. However dire the circumstances might seem there will be some parts of the situation that you can decide to take responsibility for and actually work to change. But you will never have the motivation to do that while you think that all your problems are down to others or even to circumstances. Fairy tales might have a Prince or Fairy Godmother to sort things out but that is rarely the case in life - it is almost always up to you. Accept responsibility for your life. Know that it is you who will get you where you want to go no one else Les Brown

However as a therapist I can spend a lot of time trying to help people understand what is NOT their responsibility. It really isn’t fair to feel responsible for how others feel when you make a decision in your own best interests. So if a friend needs help it is always nice if we can oblige - after all we ourselves will need help sometime. But if you can’t for some reason and they choose to be offended, you really can’t be held responsible for their feelings. The same applies to situations where people try to guilt you into doing things you don’t want to do - you are actually at liberty to make your own decision and how others choose to respond to you or your decision is up to them, it really isn’t your responsibility. So remember, you can really only be responsible for yourself and your own happiness and let’s be honest that is usually more than enough for anyone.

yourself you are unlucky or that bad things always happen to you. The simple fact is that life is wonderful but it is not fair, people get ill, people lose jobs, relationships fail. Be honest with yourself, but unless challenges are a result or consequence of your own earlier actions then don’t take responsibility for everything that happens. Having said that YOU can be and are responsible for how you react to what happens. That is definitely down to you. You could go around saying life is not fair (true) or that you are unlucky (not really true) or you can accept that what happens might not be down to you, but how you react is completely your responsibility.

ITALY

A Little Taste of

A

truly authentic delicious Italian dishes so I was pleased to see that the menu was a duplicate of the Ampthill one. As always the decision of what to choose was a difficult one, although it was helped slightly by the nice cool glass of prosecco I had in my hand.

beautiful Summer’s evening (yes we do get them!) and we were off to Woburn to take a culinary journey around Italy at the newly opened Fratelli Italian Restaurant – And before you all start telling me I have the wrong village and that Fratelli is in Ampthill it is, but the 3 brothers Carmelo, Mario and Antonio have decided to open their second restaurant under the Fratelli brand, this time in the picturesque village of Woburn.

Choices were made and we teased our tastebuds with some olives and breads whilst waiting for our starters. Bruschetta Funghi (pan fried button mushrooms, smoked bacon and garlic in a creamy white wine sauce served on toasted Italian bread) the creamy texture of the mushrooms on the toasted bread was a delicious combination, with the garlic and bacon adding that extra bit of flavour, definitely a big hit for me. Antipasto Parma (thin sliced Parma ham, grilled aubergines, roasted peppers, grilled courgettes, marinated olives, mozzarella, wild rocket and salami Napoli) was hubby’s choice and considering he’s Italian in his own words “simply

Stylish and contemporary with a traditional twist is the only way to describe the interior, wooden beams, rustic tables, exposed brickwork all added to the ambience of the restaurant with the outside space adding that extra WOW factor, large umbrellas, rattan furniture and outdoor lanterns made this space just perfect for long summer evenings. The food had a lot to live up to. Fratelli in Ampthill serves 38

delicious, a truly authentic Italian platter” with the aubergines and courgettes tasting as good as his mother’s (which is praise indeed!) Starters finished we just sat back and watched one of the chef’s in the open plan kitchen area where pizzas, breads etc were prepared. Mains followed with dishes of Fettuccine Pollo Pesto (strips of chicken breast, vine tomatoes, and pesto topped with pine nuts), this was full of flavour with the combination of pesto and sweet tomatoes complimenting each other perfectly. The other dish was Linguine Frutti di Mare – (fresh mussels, squid, prawns, onions, garlic, red chili and white wine in a vine tomato and basil sauce) an abundance of fresh tasty seafood, with the chili adding a slight kick to the sauce, this dish has been tried many times at various restaurants we’ve visited but I have to say Fratelli win it hands down! The dessert menu was just as varied, but really there was no choice to make. It had to be the Tiramisu another authentic Italian favourite. This was served in a glass teacup a real quirky touch that I loved. Flavours were just as lovable with the taste of coffee seeping through and mixing with the alcohol, mouthwateringly delicious. This is a dish where presentation is unique and flavours divine. Coffee was the perfect end to a perfect evening that was full of delicious food, warm friendly staff and a venue that looks amazing – Can’t wait for our next visit. Pea and Goats Cheese Risotto Method

“The risotto combination of pea, ham and cheese is really quick and easy to put together – perfect for a last minute supper”

Pre-heat the oven to 400F/ 200C/ Gas 6.On a foil lined baking tray, line up the bacon, bake for 10 minutes, flip, and bake for an additional 8-10 minutes or until at your desired crispiness. Once out of the oven, set aside to cool. In a medium saucepan, heat the stock so that it’s just warmed through and at a VERY minimal simmer. Keep on the heat until needed. In a large pot, heat the butter until just melted and then add the onion and thyme and cook until the onion is just translucent. Turning up the heat a bit, add the risotto rice and let cook for a few minutes, stirring frequently to let the rice get to the point that it's almost frying and the rice becomes a bit translucent. Add the wine and stir to combine. Turn the heat back down to a gentle simmer. Add in just one ladle full of the stock and a pinch of salt. Stir to combine and let simmer until most of the liquid has been absorbed. Repeat this until all of the stock has been added. When you add in your last ladle full of stock, stir in the peas. You can cook the risotto so that most/ all of the liquid has been absorbed OR you can stop cooking the risotto so that there's a decent amount of liquid remaining. Once done, take off of the heat and stir in roughly 2/3 of the goat cheese and all of the Parmesan cheese. Stir until the cheese is fully melted and combined. Stir in a bit of freshly ground black pepper if desired. Chop the bacon into bite size pieces and stir into the risotto. Reserve a bit of the bacon for topping if desired. Serve and top each dish with the remaining goat cheese and any remaining bacon. Adapted from www.jamieoliver.com

Ingredients 5-6 strips of thickly cut bacon 4 cups of vegetable stock 2 tbsp of butter 1/2 a sweet onion, finely chopped 5 sprigs of fresh thyme, de-stemmed 1 1/2 cups of risotto rice 2/3 cup of white wine Heaped cup of peas (can be frozen) Salt & pepper to taste 4oz goat cheese, divided 3oz Parmesan, freshly grated

Pesto Pasta with Chicken Ingredients

“A delicious alfresco dish to enjoy with family and friends”

On a large sheet of greaseproof paper, toss the chicken with salt, pepper, fennel seeds and the rosemary leaves, fold over the paper, then bash and flatten the chicken to 1.5cm thick with a rolling pin. Put into the frying pan with the rapeseed oil, the bashed unpeeled garlic cloves and halved chilies, turning after about 3 or 4 minutes, until golden and cooked through. Line the beans up and cut off the stalks, put into the casserole pan, cover with boiling salted water and cook for 6 minutes with the lid on. Pick a few basil leaves for garnish, then rip off the stalks and put the rest of the bunch into the processor with the almonds, Parmesan, extra virgin olive oil and lemon juice, squash in the unpeeled garlic through a garlic crusher • Blitz until smooth, adding a ladle or two of cooking water from the beans to loosen, then season to taste. Slice the lasagne sheets up into random handkerchief shapes and add to the beans to cook for a couple of minutes. Halve or quarter the tomatoes, add to the chicken and give the pan a shake Stir the spinach into the pasta pan, then drain, reserving a cupful of the starchy cooking water. Return the pasta, beans and spinach to the pan, pour in the pesto from the processor and stir together, loosening with splashes of cooking water until silky. Slice the chicken breasts in half and serve with the tomatoes and chilli spooned over the top • Finely grate a little extra Parmesan over the pasta, then sprinkle everything with basil leaves. www.jamieoliver.com

Method For the chicken: 2 x 200 g skinless free-range chicken breasts 1 tsp fennel seeds 2 sprigs of fresh rosemary 2 tbsp rapeseed oil 4-5 cloves of garlic 1-2 fresh red chilies 8 ripe cherry tomatoes 250 g green beans

For the pasta & pesto: 1 big bunch of fresh basil 50 g blanched almonds 50 g Parmesan cheese, plus extra to serve 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil 1 lemon 1 clove of garlic 300 g fresh lasagne sheets 200 g baby spinach

Fry’s Footie Corner

aug2016master.qxp_Jan 2014 Aff 23/07/2016 18:11 Page 50

it last season, not even Leicester City themselves so it is hard to predict what will happen.

The football season is upon us, but before I take a look at the Premier League and the Football League, I must comment on the appointment of Sam Allardyce as the new manager of England. Personally, I believe this is an excellent appointment by the Football Association and one that as a country, we should get behind.

What we do know is that there are some top manager’s working in the league. Jose Mourinho at Manchester United, Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, Antonio Conte at Chelsea and they join Arsene Wenger at Arsenal and Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool – it promises to be a mouthwatering season.

Sam is passionate about his country, he wants it to succeed and I know that he is relishing the opportunity that he has been given. Sam is vastly experienced, he has worked in the Football League as well as the Premier League and his record speaks for itself.

The Championship is another league that is so hard to predict. I always feel the teams that are relegated from the Premier League have a bit of an advantage and you have to say that Newcastle have bought extremely well and retained the services of Rafa Benitez as their manager so you would make them favourites.

He is a football man first and foremost and that is vitally important when you are running the national side, he knows everything there is to know about players. He has a reputation as an excellent man-manager and believe me when I say this, he won’t suffer any fools – he will unite that dressing room.

Norwich City have lost a few players and they looked a bit short when we played them in pre-season, but I am sure they will add to their squad before the curtain raiser. For ourselves, here at Peterborough United, we are looking forward to the new campaign and hopefully we can have a good season and challenge at the top end.

His team’s have always been well organised and I am confident he will be a success. The only down side in this appointment is for Sunderland who will obviously have to be careful with naming his successor because they have been in and around the bottom half of the division for a number of years. Of course, the Premier League title race is as wide open as it has ever been. Nobody expected Leicester City to win

Enjoy your football!

LaFerrari has Arrived

aug2016master.qxp_Jan 2014 Aff 23/07/2016 18:11 Page 52

The Open Top

Ferrari has released photos of an open-top version of its LaFerrari supercar, which will make its public debut at the Paris Motor Show later this year (October) and we are sharing them with you, just so you can have just a little drool! This new limited-edition special series is aimed at clients and collectors who refuse to compromise on the joy of al fresco driving even when at the wheel of a supercar. The name and technical characteristics of the new car will be announced at the Paris International Motor Show, as will the number of examples Ferrari will build. However, all available examples have already been sold after a special preview to clients and the order book is closed. The new limited-edition special series will be available with a removable carbon-fibre hard top and a removable soft top. It has the same running gear and performance figures as the original LaFerrari, sporting a 800 cv V12 (with a specific power output of 128 cv/l) coupled with a 120 kW electric motor (163 cv), unleashing 963 cv in total. Significant and extensive modifications have been made to the chassis with the aim of retaining the same torsional rigidity and beam stiffness as the coupÊ version. The car’s aerodynamics have also been further honed to guarantee the same drag coefficient when driving in the open configuration.

Follow in The Footsteps of

Roald Dahl

And experience the beauty and magic of Norway

aug2016master.qxp_Jan 2014 Aff 23/07/2016 18:11 Page 57

As Stephen Spielberg's film adaptation of Roald Dahl's childhood classic The BFG comes to the big screen, experience the beauty and magic of Norway that served as the inspiration for some of Roald Dahl's enchanting stories on the new Roald Dahl's Norway holiday from Best Served Scandinavia. Born to Norwegian parents, Roald Dahl spent many of his childhood holidays on the beaches and by the fjords of Norway, and his mother's tales of trolls and mythical Norwegian creatures are said to have been inspiration for some of his characters such as the BFG himself. The young Roald was transfixed by these tales and entranced by the country – as he wrote in his autobiography, Boy: Tales of Childhood 'unless you have sailed down the Oslo-fjord like this yourself on a tranquil summer's day, you cannot imagine what it is like.' Such was his love of the country that as an adult, he returned there to holiday for many years, with a particular favourite being The Strand Hotel in the seaside village of Fevik, on Norway's

southern tip. Best Served Scandinavia's 'Roald Dahl's Norway' is a new five-day tailor made holiday visiting Oslo and Fevik, staying at the very same Strand Hotel for three nights, following a one night stay exploring Oslo. Set on a beautiful sandy beach, overlooking the islands and skerries of Grimstad's archipelago, the hotel is one of Norway's last remaining functionalist hotels and hosted Dahl and his wife on their summer holidays for some 30 years. Now it offers the very best in Scandi-style, and is ideal for couples and families alike, with an excellent restaurant, outdoor hot tubs, a sauna, fitness area and activities such as beach volleyball, fishing, diving and boat trips to explore some of the hidden coves along the coastline. BOOK IT!

Best Served Scandinavia offers a five-day Roald Dahl's Norway holiday priced from ÂŁ595 per person, including return flights from London to Oslo, one night at the Saga Hotel Oslo, 3 nights at the Strand Hotel Fevik and economy car hire for 4 days. (www.best-served.co.uk)

Cambodia,ACruising and Comfort Life of Luxury

What is a luxury holiday? For some, a holiday is in itself a luxury. Whether jetting off to an exotic coastal retreat for rejuvenation and serenity, or cruising the beautiful west coast of Scotland in the utmost comfort, here’s two of our f a v o u r i t e redefinitions of the ‘luxury holiday’. Knai Bang Chatt, Kep, Cambodia Kep in Cambodia has always held an allure for the elite, from 1908 when it was a fashionable French seaside retreat, and later as a playground for the wealthy in the 1960s, before it was abandoned during

the Khmer Rouge regime. Faded, haunting villas which hark back to Kep’s glamorous heyday are empty shells. However, at Knai Bang Chatt, some ‘60s villas have been lovingly transformed back to their former glory. Set right on the edge of the sea, surrounded by jungle-clad mountains and misty islands, Knai Bang Chatt could not be in a more spectacular and picturesque setting. The restored glamour of the villas, the casual, laid-back vibes of the resort, and the opportunity to enjoy some watersports or refreshing cocktails at the adjacent Sailing

Club are what adds a touch of ‘barefoot boutique’. Inspired by the Japanese concept of ‘Wabi Sabi’ – or finding the beauty in imperfection – accommodation is minimalist, rustic, and features earthy tones and natural materials, from teak for the frames of the traditional Khmer beds to organic paint on the walls. Each room has its own character, but all offer spaciousness, and a bright airiness.

Hebridean Princess, Hebridean Island Cruises A former MacBrayne car ferry and Royal Mail Ship, Hebridean Princess has since been transformed into an all-inclusive luxury ship boasting a country club atmosphere, with a wonderful reputation for being utterly unique. Her reputation is so well-respected, she's been chartered by the Queen twice for a private family holiday. The exceptionally small guest numbers, the attentive and friendly crew, and the ship’s charmingly quaint and country-house-hotellike décor all combine perfectly to create the most incredible friendly and intimate atmosphere. Hebridean Princess may not have all the bells and whistles that other cruise ships may have, there’s certainly no waterparks (there’s not even a pool), or a smorgasbord of restaurants and bars, no onboard spa, and certainly no Broadway productions onboard. Instead, you’ll discover an abundance of old-world charm from an exceptionally warm and welcoming Tiree Lounge – complete with an inviting fireplace – to a charming conservatory where you can enjoy teas and coffees, and fragrant flowers. She makes for an interesting comparison to m o r e ‘glamourous’ and swanky, modern ships, particularly externally. Hebridean Princess’ décor is warm and inviting, and replete with subtle touches of Scottish themes, with subdued tartan and Harris tweeds. Hebridean goes back to the basics of a truly exceptional and enjoyable cruising experience: attentive and friendly staff providing excellent service, exquisite food, and wonderful destinations along the Scottish coast, which she is purpose-built to explore.

A quiet night in... The Night Book by Richard Madeley An authentic and exciting story of dark suspense set in the Lake District where, beneath the inviting water of the lakes, danger and death are waiting. The summer of 1976 was unprecedented in living memory. Days of blazing sunshine bled into weeks and months. In the Lake District, Cumbria's mountains and valleys began to resemble a Grecian landscape. People swam in delightfully tropic waters to cool off. But, barely three feet below the surface, the temperature remained just a degree or so above freezing. As the summer blazed on, the drownings began...What if someone wanted to take revenge? To remove an abusive, controlling partner from their life? When and where better to stage a murder and pass it off as an accidental drowning?

Mechanic: Resurrection Meticulous assassin Jason Statham is forced to undertake three impossible kills in this stunt-packed sequel. Audiophile contract killer Arthur Bishop (Jason Statham) thought he'd retired. But then a formidable former foe re-emerges and kidnaps his girlfriend, Gina (Jessica Alba). Now Arthur is presented with his toughest challenge yet. To secure her release, he must pull off three kills on four continents over just five days, using his remarkable skills to make each appear as though it was an accident. But although the kidnappers are relentless and ruthless, Arthur has the resourcefulness to match them blow for blow. And Gina is no feeble damsel in distress, either. Release Date: 23rd August

10 Cloverfield Lane A young woman (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) wakes up in a cellar after suffering a severe car accident.
