PICTURE PERFECT PORTUGAL Marianne & Jamie 1/07/2023

winter2024.qxp_Layout 1 13/02/2024 21:31 Page 37

Marianne and Jamie have been a couple since 2011 when they connected on Facebook and after some backwards and forwards, and lovely beach walks, they realised they were in for something special.

How did the proposal happen? We got engaged high in the Dolomites in Italy, just as Italy was reopening after Covid. We’ve always been a big fan of the mountains, so it was just the ideal setting. The day itself was magical we seemed to have the entire alpine meadow to ourselves. Jamie sent me out ahead for a photo, and when I turned around he was down on one knee. Afterwards, we celebrated in a stunning boutique hotel built into the mountainside. It is and always will be a treasured memory for us. We can’t wait to revisit one day soon! Where did the wedding take place? The Algarve, Portugal. We had our ceremony in Alte; an old, quaint village in the Algarvian countryside. It felt like going back in time that day, with friendly locals gathering outside small bars to watch us pass by. The church was cosy and picturesque, and our Priest was the loveliest man who filled us all with joy through his warmth and wit. The ceremony felt like a hearty hug, it was so wholesome.

After the ceremony, a vintage car took us to Monte do Serrinho Country House, our venue for the evening. On arrival, all of our guests soaked up the sunshine and music and enjoyed amazing cocktails and canapes.

Algarve Wedding Planners Paula, Karina and Daniela were on hand ensuring everything ran smoothly. The food was absolutely beautiful (our guests still rave about it!) The dinner setting was under the trees and branches, lit up by the warm light of the lanterns. What colour were your bridesmaid dresses? Our bridesmaid dresses were rust in colour, which complemented the Algarvian countryside, and our beautiful venue perfectly.

winter2024.qxp_Layout 1 13/02/2024 21:32 Page 38

The theme Our theme was rustic vibes with pops of colour. I created a moodboard to represent our vision for the day and our wedding planners went above and beyond to bring this vision to life.

The cake A three-tiered cake of chocolate, lemon and carrot was simplistic in style with white textured icing and decorated with rust orange flowers. Something blue I included blue thistles in my bouquet.

Flats or heels? Heels. I saved the flats for the dancing!

Your best buy? Algarve Wedding Planners Paula, Karina and all the team were nothing short of phenomenal. From day one, their organisational skills kept everything on schedule and flowing accordingly, and by the time the big day finally arrived, we were relaxed in knowing that everything would work out perfectly.

How did it end? We finished off the night clinking glasses by the pool and toasting to an incredible day.

Is there anything you wish you’d done differently? We’ve replayed the day over in our heads thousands of times, and there is not a single thing we would change. It couldn’t have been more magical. We just wish we could relive it again and again! Where did you go on honeymoon? We “mini-mooned” in the Swiss Alps right after our wedding and did some lovely hikes and sightseeing. We have since made the move to live in the United Arab Emirates, and so our adventure continues!

NAPA VALLEY LUXURY LeBrina & William 15/07/2023

winter2024.qxp_Layout 1 13/02/2024 21:32 Page 41

LeBrina, owner of Escape Spa in Cypress, Texas met William a former NFL football player, via a mutual friend.

How did the proposal happen? The proposal happened at a barn where we were boarding our horses. It was truly magical. Flowers covered the isle of the barn surrounded by family and friends. William asked me to get ready for a party at a country club, but pretended he received a call at the barn that my favourite horse wasn't feeling well and showing signs of colic. We opened the barn doors and there was beautiful decor everywhere. Where did the wedding take place? The wedding took place at Stanly Ranch on the southern edge of Napa Valley, where pristine vineyards blanket gently rolling hills that rise up to meet the wide-open California sky. What colour were your bridesmaid dresses? Half Blush and half mushroom tone The theme Rustic Boho chic

The cake It was an extremely moist tiered olive oil cake

Something blue A small blue pendant with a picture of my late Great grandmother inside of it. Flats or heels? Heels.

Your best buy? The venue decor and my dress

How did it end? The wedding party and friends all jumped in the pool with our formal wear on, and security laughed and just asked for us to "keep it down!" Is there anything you wish you’d done differently? Yes, not allowing other people to make their opinions and energy the centre of attention on our special day Where did you go on honeymoon? I

Happy Ever After at L’Alpaga

n a hamlet above Megève and nestled within the rolling mountain slopes of Mont Blanc is luxury at its best, L’Alpaga, a five-star hotel that’s more than a hotel, it’s an alpine retreat that is just as appealing in the summer as it is in the winter and is the most idyllic hideaway to exchange vows and begin your ‘Happy Ever After’.

I’ve only ever visited Mont Blanc and its surrounding mountainscapes in the wintertime, when there’s snow everywhere and the order of the day is to ski, so when I was invited to experience L’Alpaga and take part in a ‘real life wedding’ in sunny September it was of course a resounding “I Do” from me. Arriving at L’Alpaga one of the first things you notice is Mont Blanc in all its glory, the most scenic landscape to create picture perfect photographs of your special day, whether it’s a winter wedding surrounded by snow or a summer wedding radiating nature’s rolling green hills and forests of pine trees, it’s an untouched landscape whatever season you choose. L’Alpaga’s collection of wooden chalets blends effortlessly into its alpine surroundings, naturally radiating nature’s brilliance wherever you look.

Boasting luxury accommodation that individually accommodates all your needs, you can choose from one of 33 rooms or suites along with 5 private chalets, making it ideal for the happy couple and all their guests. All slightly different in design and décor, but all just as luxurious and comfortable as each other.

My room oozed sophisticated luxe, an oasis of calm and tranquillity complemented by a rustic-chic vibe. The soft limed oak panelling accessorised with muted tones of creams and browns and added

hues of alpine green and black, created an idyllic mountain retreat. Step onto the balcony and it doesn’t get any better than this, styled with rustic, comfy furniture you’re greeted by the most exhilarating panoramic views of Mont Blanc and the surrounding scenery, I knew exactly where I would be later, curled up in the chair, wrapped in a throw and sipping on hot chocolate, lost in the ambience of the sounds of nature, never tiring of the ever changing views.

Whether you’ve had a hard day on the pistes, a stroll around Megève or explored the area on a bike ride, once back at L’Alpaga the rest and relaxation begin. Visit the spa to take a swim or spoil yourself with a massage, breath in even more of the wonderous views of Mont Blanc whilst indulging in the outdoor hot tub and sauna or grab yourself a cool glass of wine or a cocktail and sit in the sumptuous chairs on the outdoor terrace as you soak up the serene atmosphere, which is exactly what we did after venturing into Megève for a horse drawn carriage tour around the cobbled streets of this charming village, finishing off the evening roasting marshmallows around the firepit, creating memories that’ll last a lifetime. Weddings at L’Alpaga are a multitude of infinite possibilities all tailored-made to your requirements in a tranquil alpine hamlet that will allow you to create your very own fairy-tale.

Summer or winter, the spaces are yours to do with as you want. Whether it’s pre-ceremony aperitifs and canapes on the terrace, an intimate horse drawn carriage ride for the happy couple or fireworks to light up the night sky, the possibilities are endless, L’Alpaga is there to make sure your dreams really do become a reality.

It’s a haven of breath-taking scenery right in the heart of nature with the French Alps as its backdrop, the elegance and grandeur shining through in every detail.

The food is just as exquisite as its surrounding and offers a gastronomic journey for your tastebuds. Using fresh local ingredients Head Chef Alexandre Baule and his team construct a ‘wedding breakfast’ fit for a King. Toasting the happy couple with only the best champagne, it really can’t get any better or so you think! The ‘icing on the cake’ (literally) is the appearance of the ‘wedding cake’ a hand-crafted creation by pastry chef Tess Evans Mialet, that’s an elaborate masterpiece and needs to be wheeled out on a trolley, impressing guests with the delicate attention to detail, it really is perfection. As day turns into evening, the dancing begins, carefully curated cocktails are sipped, champagne corks are popped and the night sky twinkles above as guest’s revel in a unique day where memories that’ll last a lifetime have been created. Manor House Hideaway at

Horwood House hy go abroad when the UK itself has some breathtakingly beautiful places, ideal for escaping with your partner for a sneaky premoon or minimoon before jetting off somewhere exotic later in the year.

W

Horwood House in Buckinghamshire is the ideal place for this. Centrally located in the village of Little Horwood, this sprawling Manor House is set within 38 acres and surrounded by the lush Pytheas Gardens and serene lakes, offering a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. As you approach down the picturesque tree-lined driveway, this stunning Grade II listed Manor House built in 1911, oozes Lady of The Manor country chic. Having recently undergone a 6-millionpound renovation it is acutely evident throughout the hotel that its heritage has been carefully preserved through a mood enhancing palette of neutral and earthy tones and a fusion of botanical prints, creating a distinctive style and calming ambience.

There are more than 150 rooms and suites in the main hotel and 3 Suites in The Manor House. We were lucky enough to be staying in one of the Manor House suites, the Verney Suite, a pure indulgence of stylish sophistication. The suite has separate rooms, a bedroom and living/dining room both with large original stone leaded bay windows that look out onto sweeping views of the lily pond and surrounding gardens. Designed with ‘country chic’ in mind, the calming palette of neutral earthy colours continue on the walls, with the furniture fusing modern and contemporary vibes, gold hues along with botanical touches and original features.

Walk through the imposing bedroom into the bathroom, an example of Art Deco opulence at its best. Gold taps, scallop tiles and marble splash-backs, along with a walk-in rain shower, twin sinks (of course), fluffy bathrobes and slippers, make this suite the most perfect place for a little romance.

The Manor House itself is brimming with grand features that include exquisite chandeliers, a sweeping staircase and stone fireplaces, blending classic styling with modern luxury. Although the Manor House has three suites we were the only people staying in one so it felt like we were most definitely Lord and Lady of our very own Manor House. Dinner is served in Harry’s Bar & Kitchen a contemporary and stylish restaurant, with an eclectic mix of informal seating, botanical touches and a relaxed atmosphere. We began our dining experience with Kiln Roasted Smoked Salmon Fish Cake served with fennel jam, the flavours in this were a perfect combination as were the tastes and textures in the Coal Roasted Beetroot served with a goat’s cheese mousse and maple walnuts, washed down effortlessly with a glass of Vendange White Zinfandel.

The chef here is from Egypt and having visited Egypt many times I opted for the authentic Pomegranate Glazed Grilled Chicken on onion flat bread alongside a fennel salad. Colourfully presented, this dish reflected Egyptian flavours effortlessly and was a mouthwateringly delicious treat for the taste buds. Hubbie’s main was a 10oz Aged Rump Steak topped with a Tiger Prawn, cooked to perfection this literally melted in the mouth.

I decided to end the evening with a Paris-Brest with Vanilla Crème Diplomat, and it certainly didn’t disappoint. Hubbie opted for the Rum Roasted Pineapple Brioche served with coconut marshmallow ice cream, absolutely delicious and the perfect way to end a delightful dining experience. Suitably full from some fabulous food, the Manor House Suite was calling us for a nightcap and a blissful night’s sleep. Next morning after breakfast we set off to explore the idyllic grounds that include formal gardens, a Lilypond, a secret garden

winter2024.qxp_Layout 1 13/02/2024 21:36 Page 69

and woodlands. The grounds are a significant part of the Horwood experience, and another example of its heritage.

Worn out from all the exploring it was time for a little pampering in The H Spa, where botanicals and nature are at the forefront once again, a tranquil haven, perfect for a swim, unwinding in the sauna or steam room or just relaxing on a lounger by the pool, what more could you want? Well maybe a facial! Tempted by the extensive menu of treatments, I indulged in a Vinosource Hydrating & Nourishing Facial that includes a massage with fresh grapes followed by a recovery essential oil massage to soothe my tired skin. Dimmed lights, beautiful aromas and soothing music add to the whole ambience of peace and tranquillity.

Horwood House is a mix of historic touches and modern luxuries, a peaceful and calming haven away from all the hustle and bustle of wedding prep, honeymoon planning or post wedding blues. A romantic retreat just for the two of you, where you can hear the cow’s moo and the birds sing and you can do as much or as little as you want in your own little Manor House hideaway. BOOK IT

Prices start from £489 per night including breakfast in a Manor Suite. For more information or to book, visit www.horwoodhouse.co.uk

A Fairy-tale of Love erched on a hillside in the heart of the French Alps and overlooking the capital of Savoie is a bewitching 14th century fairy-tale castle – Purple Summer’s Château de Candie. Surrounded by a hundred-year-old forest and its own vineyards this enchanting hotel with an ivy-cloaked façade, trickling fountains, and historic charm is the start of your journey to ‘happy ever after’. A blissful hideaway for your honeymoon or wedding day.

P

Your fairy-tale experience begins from the minute you’re collected from the airport, a hamper full of fresh produce, courtesy of the Château for you to enjoy as you sit back, glass of champagne in hand and take in the magnificent mountain views and mesmerising scenery on your journey to the Château. This historic Château combines original features with contemporary touches, filled with antiques and period hues, decadent chandeliers and elegant accessories, its fairytale-esque ambience oozes French charm and countryside aesthetic.

There are 25 exceptional rooms and suites, all uniquely decorated, fusing contemporary and vintage designs each individually accommodating all your needs, making it ideal for you and your wedding guests. And for the happy couple themselves there is no question at all it has to be ‘The Tower’ a dream destination in its own right, whether you choose to have your wedding at Château de Candie or your honeymoon, The Tower is the ultimate suite for a romantic indulgent getaway. This three-floor decadent private tower divided into a bedroom, lounge and spacious bathroom with a large double bath was to be my home during my stay. High ceilings, wood panelling, textured wallpaper, antique furniture and a spiral cast iron staircase that exudes architectural elegance, the most charming hideaway to pour a glass of champagne, open the French doors and gaze from the top of the tower at the alpine landscape that surrounds the Château, you really do feel like a princess cocooned in her very own tower.

There’s so much to see and do at the Château, whether it’s indulgent wine tasting with the amazingly knowledgeable sommelier, laze around and dip your toes in the serene, shimmering pool, enjoy an indulgent glass of champagne and oysters in the decadent champagne and oyster bar or if whisky’s more your tipple of choice delight in a warming whisky-tasting experience in the Château’s whisky snug. Once you’re feeling relaxed after your little tipples why not retire back to The Tower for a tranquil massage tailored just for you, using elite essential oils it’s the ultimate way to recharge and relax before your big day. If you’re feeling more energetic take a long walk around the Château’s sprawling vineyards and surrounding woodland or venture into Chambery itself for a little sightseeing and shopping.

If it’s delicious cuisine in a scenic setting you’re looking for, a visit to the waterside restaurant Le Lido (just 15 minutes away) is a must. Situated on the banks of the Lac du Bourget, this picturesque lake is the largest fresh water lake in France and is the local’s destination of choice for walking, cycling, water sports and of course swimming. It’s a picture-perfect spot to just sit and breath-in the awe-inspiring views of the lake and mountains from the wrap around outdoor terrace and private platoon. Le Lido is open day and night. You can revel in delightful food, enjoy a glass of local wine or just grab a coffee with friends as you wonder at the blue water against the mountainous backdrop by day and watch the sunset and the twinkling sky at night.

Reflected in the menu is the restaurant’s commitment to locally sourced food and drink, including fish directly from the lake. The menu has so many enticing dishes including trout gravalax tartine, breaded goats cheese salad, veal escallop and lamb pastille, all an array of fresh flavours, delectable and faultless on the palette, washed down smoothly with a chilled glass of Savoie wine. I rarely indulge in dessert but the pull of the Tea Gourmande dessert (a selection of 4 mini desserts with coffee or tea) was too tempting and was the perfect way to end a delightful dining experience.

Our culinary wonders didn’t end here, back at the Château we were invited to try the ultimate gastronomy experience, the Château’s wedding breakfast choices. Where every mouthful of food is designed to make your dream wedding a reality. Couples can choose and sample an assortment of dishes, helping them decide what food to offer their guests on their wedding day. We began our evening of culinary delights with appetisers, that included light cream of mackerel, nage of prawns, Foie Gras dome and mushroom broth, all miniature mouthfuls of deliciousness and perfect for a pre-wedding breakfast cocktail reception.

There are three menu types available: Château (starter, main course, cheeses and dessert), Candie (Starter, fish course, main course, cheeses and dessert) and Baron (starter 1, starter 2, fish course, main course, cheese, pre-dessert and dessert). We decided to opt for the Chateau and the Baron menu. Each dish was as exquisite as the next, showcasing the finest cuisine beautifully presented and prepared with locally-sourced ingredients. Our choices included mouth-wateringly tender veal steak served with courgettes, olives and piquillos, fresh and flavoursome langoustine with aubergine condiment and the creamiest goats cheese mousse I’ve ever tasted, it’s where culinary artistry meets regional authenticity.

Chef Badara Gueye has put together an exquisite menu full of delightful French flavours complimented with spices from his home country of Senegal. grandeur, continuing into the bathroom with its opulent marble walls and floors. The pièce de résistance though, is the breath-taking views – the window frames them effortlessly just like Monet’s Le Grand Canal painting, the most perfect spot to pull up a chair, open a bottle of champagne and just watch the world float by.

Another perfect choice for views is the hotel’s rooftop Skyline Bar (the highest in Venice) and the most idyllic place, could there be anything more romantic than sharing a cocktail or two as you watch the sunset over the city of ‘Love’.

Downstairs on the ground floor, is the Rialto Lobby Bar and Restaurant – perfect for lunch or a midday snack, plus Il Molino where breakfast is served in two of the original flour mill buildings, whether your tastebuds are craving sweet or savoury the choice is not only endless it’s authentic and delicious, and you really won’t go hungry!

If you only eat once at the hotel, it has to be Aromi, a destination in its own right, this award-winning restaurant offers a unique culinary journey in an intimate and elegant atmosphere whether you eat inside or out. Choose from wine-paired dinners led by the ‘aromas’ of the city and wider regions of Italy, tasting menus and individual mouth-watering dishes.

The pan-fried foie gras, pistachio, carrot puree and fig marmalade was a mirage of textures and tastes as was the Mazara del Vallo prawns served with leeks, black currant sauce and lime. Spaghetti with Canadian lobster, zucchini and authentic tomato sauce made a great choice as did the Turbot fish fillet with black squid ink and cauliflower puree, nothing disappoints it’s all freshly prepared and is a real treat to the taste buds, full of fresh seasonal flavours, you can almost taste the culinary passion in each mouthful.

This exquisite experience is al-fresco dining at its best, with seating close to the water’s edge, you savour each mouthful as you breathe in all the wonderous sights of Venice. Watching day slowly turn to night as the sun sets and the sky lights up with twinkling stars, you soak it all up and begin to understand why it’s said to be one of the most romantic cities in the world. The Hilton Molino Stucky Venice is the ideal base for exploring Giudecca island and its historic surroundings, absorbing a slower pace of life as you visit art galleries, churches, gorgeous gardens, boutique shops or one of the many eateries and bars, where frescos adorn the walls and ceilings and have you wondering many times ‘if only walls could talk!’ You can do as little or as much as you like, and if it’s doing nothing that you want then a visit to Hilton Molino Stucky Venice’s spa is a must, indulge in a Venetian couples massage,

where the strokes mimic those of a gondolier as he navigates his gondola or you can take the lift back up to the rooftop to the other gem in the hotel’s crown the rooftop swimming pool, which has the second highest vantage point across the whole city. If you’re feeling a little more energetic take the hotels’ 5-minute complimentary boat ride over to heart of Venice and get engulfed in the busy atmosphere of all the iconic sites including St. Mark’s Square, a walk over the Rialto bridge, a wander around Doge’s Palace, a must-have gondola ride or just get yourself lost and disappear into one of the many authentic book shops or hidden bars. – the choice is yours, staying on Giudecca island allows you the luxury of appreciating Venice at your own pace. The Hilton Molino Stucky Venice allows you to experience the two different faces of Venice, both completely different but both as romantic as each other, the ideal split between tourist and tranquil the most perfect destination for creating memories that last a lifetime. EVERLASTING MEMORIES IN

LAKE COMO For centuries Lake Como has been renowned for its imposing setting, lakeside villages, and glamorous celebrities. Located at the foot of the Alps, it offers some of the most romantic and picturesque scenery in Italy, a destination of pure beauty, a dreamy place that exceeds expectations.

Having visited most of Italy, Lake Como has been one place that has always eluded me (I really don’t know why) and so when I was invited to visit this truly exquisite part of Italy there was really no other answer than yes! We were staying at The Hilton Lake Como, a luxury hotel, just a picturesque 15-minute walk from the historical centre. Located on the site of an old silk factory, merging old and new together in a bright and elegant contemporary way. The old part of the hotel has been ingeniously connected to the new part by a ‘glass cube’, an all-glass lounge filled with plants and large plush sofas, just like an exquisite garden room, decorated in a soft palette of neutrals and browns to further enhance the outdoor feel. Fall into one of the sofas and you won’t want to get up they’re so comfy and just the perfect place to sit, people watch and while away the hours. And then there’s the smell, so exquisitely floral, it lingers in the air wherever you walk (courtesy of the large diffusers dotted around).

Heading up to the 6th floor for a little lunch in Terrazza 241, surrounded by rolling mountains, lush foliage, and panoramic views of the iconic crystal blue Lake you literally have your breath taken away, and it is at this moment you realise what all the fuss about ‘Como’ is! It’s the most idyllic backdrop for a wedding, minimoon, honeymoon or romantic getaway, the most heavenly place to create memories.

There are a selection of rooms and suites at Hilton Lake Como, many with impressive views of the lake and scenery beyond. We were lucky enough to be staying in a suite, an oasis of tranquillity with large floor-to-ceiling windows ensuring plenty of light, whilst tones of brown complimented the neutral delicate palette in the bedroom and soft hues of grey in the living area crafted a calm lakeside ambience that was further enhanced by a marble bathroom, including a large free standing bath to luxuriate with bubbles of both kinds in. The icing on the cake to this sumptuous suite was the

balcony offering even more serene views of the lake and its surrounding natural beauty, the perfect spot for an aperitif, morning coffee or just because.

Italy is renowned for its exceptional food, and Hilton Lake Como keeps this reputation alive. Terrazza 241 offers breakfast, lunch and dinner, a place to enjoy alfresco at its best, and if the weather isn’t perfect, the restaurant has inside seating so there’s no chance you’ll miss out on the delicious dishes. Whether it’s breakfast fit for a King or a dining delight it really is a foodie’s heaven. The menu offers creative contemporary dishes inspired by traditional recipes, the lobster spaghettoni was an explosion of mouth-watering flavours, the pasta was cooked al dente (hubbie’s Italian, so he’s the ideal critic) and just divine as was the Mediterranean sea bass served with cherry tomatoes and taggiasca olives, the flavours just tempted the tastebuds mouthful after mouthful, and then there was the scallops, tender and flavoursome all accompanied of course with champagne, memorable views and a symphony of colour when the sun set, it really is a place for romance and an Italian culinary journey that’ll stay forever in your memories.

Explore your foodie journey even further with of course a stroll to the main town, where although its only ten minutes away will take you far longer as you veer off track looking at exquisite villas, hidden alleyways and of course lake views from all angles. Maybe you’ll even spot an ‘A-Lister’ or two, and wonder if that speedboat on the lake is part of a new Bond film, who knows, the possibilities are endless, all I know is there’s no better way to reward yourself for all this exploring than with a cool Aperol Spritz and traditional pizza with the lake as your backdrop.

If all this eating, drinking and exploring has worn you out, then it’s most definitely time to pay the hotel’s award winning eforea spa a visit. A place to savour serenity and romance as you wrap yourself in a soft fluffy robe and are pampered with an enchanting treatment followed by a glass of bubbles as you relax and rejuvenate in your own cocoon of bliss. The spa has an indoor pool, but if the sun is shining it’ll be calling you to the rooftop where you can enjoy the outdoor rooftop pool, overlooking the lake and the natural beauty beyond. Sit back in one

of the surrounding loungers, a glass of something cold in your hand and who knows, you may get a little feeling of not only calm but maybe a slight glimpse into how George Clooney actually lives! Hilton Lake Como really is a couple’s dream, a tranquil setting with exhilarating views that allows for you to do as little or as much as you want. Lie around the pool sipping cocktails, tempt your tastebuds with delightful dishes, spoil yourself at the spa or wander into the town and take a boat out on the lake, the possibilities are endless, all you have to do is envelop yourself in a bubble of love and enjoy.
