How to Care for Ageing Skin As we go through life, our skin goes through changes too, and understanding how it ages is key to keeping it healthy. It’s essential to be aware of the internal and external factors that can speed up the ageing process. This knowledge can help safeguard against premature ageing, combatting concerns such as wrinkles, fine lines, hyperpigmentation, and dull skin. That’s why we spoke to founder of CellDerma skincare, Dr Dev Patel, who reveals how the skin ages and how you should care for it. His top tips provide the foundation to optimise your skincare routine, so it is effective in every stage in life.

Dehydration and moisture loss Our skin needs water to maintain its plumpness, elasticity, and overall health. As we age, our skin's ability to retain moisture naturally declines due to the gradual breakdown of the lipid layer.

This causes the skin to become dehydrated and lose its ability to bounce back, leading to the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Harsh weather, low humidity, and pollution can negatively impact your skin's moisture levels. That's why it's crucial to wear SPF daily, consider an indoor humidifier in, and opt for stress defence creams that creates a biomimetic shield to protect against environmental damage. This will help balance skin moisture and better support the skins protective barrier.

Sun damage The sun’s damaging UVA and UVB rays contribute significantly to visible signs of ageing. Prolonged exposure results in various forms of damage, including wrinkles, fine lines, sunspots and a breakdown of collagen and elastin that keeps your skin supple. Exposure to UV rays extends beyond cosmetic concerns, and failing to apply SPF daily can elevate the risk of developing melanoma, a potentially severe form of skin cancer. To maintain your skins health, opt for a mineralbased sunscreen that provides broad-spectrum protection, while protecting the skin from environmental aggressors. My go-to product is CellDerma Ultralight Mineral SPF25, as it’s a weightless formula containing zinc oxide to ensure protection across the entire UVA protection. Unlike other sunscreens, it does not leave a grey hue, so is suitable for all skin tones and types.

Muscle contractions and expression lines Everyday facial expressions are a natural aspect of life – we smile, frown, laugh, and scrunch our noses. However, when these expressions become repetitive, they can play a role in the development of wrinkles. As your facial muscles engage, grooves may form beneath the skin's surface. Gradually, the skin can lose its ability to bounce back, resulting in the formation of fine lines, wrinkles, and permanent furrows in the brow area. As the first step, protect your eyes with sunglasses when you are outdoors in hot weather to avoid squinting and brow furrows from developing. Barcode lip lines run vertically down into the top lip, and can be caused by repetitive pouting from smoking or drinking through a straw. So, it is important to examine and change any lifestyle habits that contribute to premature ageing. Also, try not to clench the teeth together, as this can put unnecessary tension on your jawline and contribute to a sagging smile. Botulinum toxin anti-wrinkle injections can add volume to smooth out wrinkles, or dermal filler can be injected by a reputable aesthetics practitioner to decrease the appearance of fine lines.

Decreased cell turnover Cell turnover is when old or damaged skin cells are shed and replaced by new, healthy ones. This natural process is essential for maintaining a bright and youthful complexion. However, as we age, cell turnover slows down to approximately 4-6 weeks, instead of 2-4 weeks. This means that dead skin cells can pile up on the surface, making the skin

appear dull and rough. To mitigate these effects, incorporate retinoids into your skincare routine to speed up cell turnover. New generation retinoids such as hydroxypinacolone retinoate (HCP) have been developed to offer the benefits of retinol, without the expected side effects such as skin irritation, increased sensitivity, dryness, and flaking. HCP has a higher potency to reduce wrinkles, and when combined with powerful antioxidants Vitamin C and E, it can further help cell repair. I recommend patients use Retin-ACE which contains a powerful blend of HCP, Vitamin C and E, followed by a rich moisturiser.

Loss of collagen and elasticity As we age, the skin decreases in collagen and elastin production, which are essential for keeping the skin looking plump and youthful.

Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body, helping provide support to your skin, hair, nails, and joints. Unfortunately, collagen levels decline naturally from our mid 20s onwards, which translates to thinner skin and the formation of fine lines. While collagen provides the base, elastin gives your skin resilience. Without enough elastin, the skin loses its bounce and begins to sag over time. To address prominent signs of ageing, I would recommend a Collagen Restore cream with messenger peptides for collagen stimulation, and neuro-peptides which target muscles of facial expression. The effect is strong enough to slow down formation of expression lines and soften existing wrinkles, however, not capable of negatively impacting on expression, like anti-wrinkle injections can (when done badly). As well as this, look for ingredients such as hyaluronic acid and squalene to help hydrate and plump the skin.

Impact of lifestyle choices While genes play a role in how gracefully we age, the good news is that we have more control than we think! Our daily choices, from what we eat to how we sleep, can significantly impact how our skin ages. Unhealthy habits such as smoking, poor diet and excessive alcohol consumption can cause premature ageing as it hinders our skin’s ability to repair and renew. As well as this, a lack of sleep often results in dark circles, fine lines, and dull complexions. This is because adequate sleep is essential for all cellular functions so poor sleep means more collagen degradation and generally unhealthier skin. Understanding the repercussions of these lifestyle choices can help you make informed decisions to prioritise skin health.

Inflammation Skin inflammation has many possible causes including infections, allergens, stress, photosensitivity, and autoimmune conditions.

Symptoms can include rash, itching, redness, swelling or blistering.

As well as this, long-term inflammation activates enzymes that degrade collagen and elastin. As these structural elements break down, the skin becomes more prone to fine lines and wrinkles.

Inflammation also generates free radicals, highly reactive molecules that can damage skin cells and contribute to premature aging. Free radicals can also accelerate the breakdown of collagen and disrupt the skin's natural repair. Over time, this can result in the visible signs of ageing, including dull skin, sagging skin and an uneven skin tone.

If you are prone to inflammation in the skin, looking for skincare products with anti-inflammatory ingredients such as active vitamin C compounds (rather than L-ascorbic acid which can be irritating) based in a sodium hyaluronate medium. This is the most soluble form of hyaluronic acid and offers good hydration for the skin, as well as enhancing the penetration of vitamin C. Steer clear of harsh chemicals, fragrances, and excessive sun exposure, which can aggravate inflammation. www.cellderma.com

Stress and its Impact on Hormone Health Stress is a common experience in modern society, and its impact on health cannot be underestimated, we caught up with Dr Fiona MacRae, a specialist in integrative women's health and bioidentical hormone balancing for the Marion Gluck Clinic who explains more.

Stress may be physical, due to trauma or surgery, social, due to pressures of work or financial constraints, or psychological. One of the key areas in which stress can have a profound effect is hormonal health. Hormones play a crucial role in regulating various bodily functions, and when stress disrupts this delicate balance, it can have serious consequences for overall well-being.

Hormones are powerful chemical messengers that influence every cell in our bodies.

When we experience stress, the body goes into a state of heightened alertness, triggering the release of stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline. These hormones help prepare us for the "fight or flight" response, by increasing heart rate, blood pressure, and energy levels. We may feel a sensation in the pit of our stomach as blood is redirected from our gastrointestinal system to skeletal muscle ready for action. While this response is a necessary protective measure in certain acute situations, chronic stress can lead to dysregulation of these hormones, and subsequent negative effects on our health.

One of the keyways in which stress can disrupt hormonal health is through the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis.

Activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis is a prominent neuroendocrine response to stress and promotes survival. This system is responsible for regulating the body's stress response and is inextricably linked to the hypothalamicpituitary-thyroid and hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal systems.

These systems are normally under the control of delicate feedback mechanisms, but chronic stress can cause dysregulation of these systems, leading to disordered hormone release.

An excess of cortisol impacts inflammation, immunological function, blood glucose control, fat storage and salt and water retention. Persistently elevated cortisol can lead to a metabolic syndrome characterised by raised blood pressure, disordered lipid profile, diabetes, weight gain and heart disease.

Cortisol and the sex steroids originate from the same precursor molecule, cholesterol. In stress there is suppression of gonadotrophins and gonadal steroids, and this can lead to disruption of normal menstrual cycle. Prolonged exposure to stress can see complete impairment of reproductive function in both men and women. Chronic overproduction of cortisol therefore sees a reduction in sex steroids presenting symptoms and signs of estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone deficiency.

This effect is known as cortisol steal.

Chronic stress has also been linked to thyroid dysfunction.

Thyroid function is downregulated with stress and circulating thyroid hormones are diminished. An excess glucocorticoid (produced by adrenal glands) inhibits thyroid stimulating hormone which is the pituitary driver of the thyroid gland. An underactive thyroid can then lead to symptoms such as fatigue, weight gain, disordered thermoregulation, and mood changes.

Severe stress may also be a risk factor for diabetes and it certainly disrupts blood sugar control in established diabetics.

Mental stress with chronic activation of the neuroendocrine system, disrupts the appetite hormones leptin and ghrelin. A decrease in leptin and concomitant increase in ghrelin, leads to increased appetite, and increased food consumption. Cortisol favours central fat deposition and weight gain.

Hormonal imbalances caused by stress can exacerbate existing health conditions, making them harder to manage and potentially leading to further complications.

The magnitude of impact of stress on our hormonal health may be huge. We can take steps to address the problem through techniques such as CBT and mindfulness. Relaxing exercise routines such as Yoga, Pilates and Tai chi may also be beneficial.

Aerobic workouts including dance and boxing classes can be fun and provided a valuable release from stress, as well as boosting cardiovascular and metabolic health. Supplements such as Ashwagandha for cortisol reduction and L-Theanine for calming influence are also helpful.

Seeking advice from a hormonal expert may be very valuable. We can assess a variety of hormone levels by blood and / or urine testing; we can assess the effect of chronic stress on the gut microbiome through stool testing and can also test individual genetics with regard to the stress response. This then enables targeted support.

In conclusion, the impact of stress on hormonal health cannot be underestimated. Chronic stress can disrupt the delicate balance of the body's hormonal systems, leading to a number of negative effects on our health. Understanding the mechanisms by which stress impacts hormonal health is crucial in order to mitigate these effects and promote overall well-being. By managing stress through techniques such as mindfulness, exercise, and social support, we can help protect our hormonal health and prevent the development of chronic health conditions. Digging Deeper Many of us, in an effort to grow, heal or regain balance in our life try to alter some of our behaviours, but often when we do this we focus on the behaviour itself rather than the emotions or beliefs that may drive those behaviours.

Imagine that you’ve had a rotten day at work and when your partner or a friend asks how you are - you snap at them. You don’t want them to snap back or be offended what you want is for them to realise that all is not well and ask how you are or if they can help.

Approach the emotion behind the behaviour NOT the behaviour.

A common issue people try to deal with is procrastination defined by the google online dictionary as “the action of delaying or postponing something”.

Many people procrastinate because they think they are reducing stress but in actual fact studies show that procrastination causes more stress in the long run.

One of the underlying emotions behind procrastination is fear. If we are dreading something – perhaps getting a test result from hospital for example it is understandable that we might seek to put it off BUT of course part of us knows putting it off won’t change the result and while we wait we probably worry a lot anyway.

Another of the reasons behind procrastination can be anxiety about the task(s) to be completed. Sometimes this is related to perfectionism with an anxiety around being able to complete the task to the ‘right’ standard.

People who suffer with anxiety will often feel overwhelmed by what they need to face even if those tasks are fairly mundane.

Depression may cause procrastination too. People who are depressed tend to dwell on negative thoughts and will often experience self-doubt.

Lower energy levels and difficulty motivating oneself are two common symptoms of depression as well. If someone can’t muster the energy to complete a task, they may find it easier to put it off until they feel better.

With depression, though, it can be difficult to gauge if, or when, someone feels motivated enough to complete what they need to.

They may also ruminate on past procrastination and lack self-compassion, which can further the cycle of putting things off. Indecisiveness, another symptom of depression, also contributes to procrastination.

Procrastination can also be linked to specific issues like ADHD and this may then be helped with medical attention. But for most of us what can we do to overcome procrastination if it is a problem?

If you always have a lengthy ‘to do list’ but find that while you may add to it not much comes off it, then procrastination may be at play. In terms of overcoming it the following steps may help.

First, stop being hard on yourself or beating yourself up. It won’t help and procrastination is rarely to do with laziness. Instead ask yourself what the underlying reasons may be and begin to tackle them instead.

It’s useful to spend a bit of time reflecting on why you procrastinate – dig deeper consider the possible reasons. Whatever the reasons it will often help to break bigger tasks into smaller chunks – large tasks or projects can make anyone feel overwhelmed.

Break down tasks. Nothing needs to be so huge that it overwhelms you.

One step at a time one thing at a time.

Work on your mindset, if you are used to focussing on the negative try to change that to focus on the good or positive. Look for things within the task that can be pleasurable or positive. I’m not saying this is easy – if you’ve spent a long time feeling negative about things it can be hard to change – but change is possible and when we start to change – things often start to look different.

Another area to consider is your self-talk – it is very hard to be positive and motivated if the voice in your head is telling you that you are useless and you’ll never do it. Try using some positive affirmations instead like I can do this, I will manage, I am competent and able etc. The problem with self-talk that is negative is that we believe it and it can keep us very stuck.

In addition to these strategies it is also important to reflect on the tasks in hand – are they things you want to do? some things are a must, I recognise that but apart from things that are necessary for survival or living a civilised life, what are you asking of yourself?

You may have embarked on certain things a while ago and maybe they no longer fit your purpose, remind yourself it is okay to change.

Or maybe other people persuade you to do things, well you can decide not to do those things – that’s where it can be useful to revisit the personal boundaries you have in place to protect yourself and your wellbeing.

The above with some simple strategies like diarising things, checking which environments you find most productive and focussing on what you want to do not what you want to avoid – should help you beat procrastination.

Chicken Marbella

“An easy, delicious way to upgrade your regular one-pot chicken dish” Ingredients

4 Chicken Thighs 4 Chicken Drumsticks Salt and black pepper, to taste 4 cloves Garlic, minced 2 tbsp Dried Oregano 2 tbsp Red Wine Vinegar 2 tbsp Olive Oil 1/2 cup Pitted Prunes 100g Pitted Green Olives 100g Pitted Black Olives 1 jar Opies Capers, drained 2 Bay Leaves 120ml White Wine 2 tbsp Brown Sugar 2 tbsp Fresh Parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Method

Season the chicken thighs and drumsticks with salt and black pepper.

Place in a large bowl.

In a separate bowl, mix together the minced garlic, dried oregano, red wine vinegar and olive oil. Pour this mixture over the chicken pieces, making sure they are well coated. Allow the chicken to marinate for at least 30 minutes. For better flavour, cover and refrigerate for a few hours or overnight.

Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F). In a large ovenproof dish or roasting pan, arrange the chicken pieces in a single layer. Scatter the prunes, green olives, black olives, capers, and bay leaves evenly around the chicken. Drizzle the white wine over the chicken and fruit. Then sprinkle over the brown sugar. Cover the dish with foil and bake in the preheated oven for about 45 minutes. Remove the foil and continue baking for an additional 15-20 minutes or until the chicken is cooked through and has a nicely browned skin.

Remove the bay leaves before serving. Garnish the Chicken Marbella with fresh chopped parsley. Serve hot, and you can pair it with rice, couscous, or crusty bread to soak up the delicious sauce.

Plum, Pumpkin and Lentil Korma “This curry makes a delicious springtime supper that’s perfect for vegans and vegeterians too”

Ingredients 500g pumpkin or butternut squash, cut into chunks 1 large red onion, chopped 2tbsp olive oil 1tsp cumin seeds 6 South African plums, pitted and sliced 2 x 400g cans green or brown lentils, rinsed and drained 4tsp vegetable stock powder or 1 vegetable stock cube 4tbsp Korma curry paste 200g coconut cream 2tbsp chopped fresh coriander Salt and freshly ground black pepper 4tbsp natural yogurt (dairy-free for vegans) Fresh coriander, to garnish Naan bread, to serve

Method

Preheat the oven to 200°C, Fan Oven 180°C, Gas Mark 6. Put the chunks of pumpkin or butternut squash and red onion into a roasting tin and add the olive oil, tossing to coat. Roast for 25-30 minutes, until just tender.

Add the cumin seeds and South African plums to the roasting tin and roast for 5 more minutes. Meanwhile, tip the lentils into a large saucepan and stir in the stock powder or crumble in the cube. Add the curry paste, coconut cream and chopped coriander. Heat, stirring occasionally until simmering.

Tip the roasted vegetable mixture into the saucepan and stir gently to mix.

Season to taste with salt and pepper and cook for a few minutes. Serve, garnished with natural yogurt and coriander sprigs, accompanied by warm naan bread.

If you want to keep the curry vegan, be sure to use a dairy-free yogurt for the garnish. If you need an alternative to pumpkin or butternut squash, try sweet potatoes instead.

Daffodil Cake

“This delicate and fragrant springtime cake is the perfect balance between citrusy and sweet”

Ingredients Cake 1 cup self-raising flour 1.5 cups granulated sugar Egg whites (from about 10 large eggs) ¼ tsp salt 1.5 tsp cream of tartar ½ tsp vanilla extract 4 large egg yolks (room temperature) 1 tsp finely grated orange zest plus more for garnish 2 tbsp orange juice Glaze 1.5 cups icing sugar (sifted) 3 tbsp orange juice 1 tbsp butter (melted)

Method Preheat oven to 375°F. Sift the flour and mix with 1/2 cup sugar. In a large bowl, beat egg whites with salt, cream of tartar and vanilla until soft peaks form, then beat in 1 cup sugar, adding 1⁄4 cup at a time over the egg whites. Beat until sugar is just blended.

Gently fold in the flour mixture by fourths until fully incorporated. In another bowl, beat the egg yolks with orange zest and juice and the remaining 2 tablespoons of sugar until thickened and pale. Fold in onethird of the white mixture.

In an ungreased 4-inch-deep 10-inch tube pan, alternate yellow and white mixture to give a marbleised effect, with white mixture on top.

Bake for 35 to 40 minutes or until a cake tester/fork inserted in the centre comes out clean.

Once cooled remove cake from pan. In a small bowl, mix icing sugar, orange juice and butter until smooth. Brush all over cooled cake and let it sit until set. Garnish cake with orange zest.

We caught up with Yeukayi Ushe (Genie) to talk three wishes, flying carpets and magic lamps.

What are audiences in store for when they come see Aladdin?

They can expect a night of Broadway-style glitz, glamor and magic with true heart.

How would you sum up the character of Genie? And can you relate to him in any way?

He's this magical being who is full of sunshine, wit, energy and vibrancy. I can only hope to live up to the massive list of incredible people who have played the role before me and he's like nobody I've ever played before myself. He is just so full of energy, so frontfooted and so much fun. Hopefully I can relate to his sunshine and warmth.

What attracted you to the show?

Genie is a character where you have all of this creative license, all of this comedy and all of these iconic songs that he gets to sing.

Having played Simba in The Lion King, to get to play another iconic Disney character is amazing. There is no way that I was going to pass up this opportunity.

Can you recall when you first saw Aladdin and what effect did it have on you?

The movie came out in 1992 and I'm not gonna give away my age

but I watched it when I was younger. I'm a massive Disney fan, so I've watched it a fair few times since. Before I knew it was Robin Williams in the movie I was like 'Is this really just one actor voicing this character?' I was inspired by his performance and then you've got the underdog story of Aladdin as well. It made me think that I can be anything, I can shape shift and do whatever I want. And then the music. My God, the music!

Speaking of the music, what's your favourite song in the show and why?

That's a really difficult question because the score is beautiful.

Prince Ali is great and so full of life but I would have to say my favourite has to be Friend Like Me. In that number you get treated to all of the magic, all of the glitz, all of the glamor, all of the abundance, and the song builds and builds and builds.

If you could have three wishes granted, what would they be?

I would wish for the ability to eat anything that I wanted with the proviso that wouldn't gain any weight. I would wish to be able to travel to so many beautiful places across the world without having to queue up and get on a flight; I'd just click my fingers and I'm there. And then lastly, I would wish for my family and my friends to be comfortable and happy.

What lead you into a showbusiness career?

It was actually because of Robin Williams. His performances in Mrs. Doubtfire and Aladdin inspired me from such a young age because there were no limitations to his voice, his comedy and the characters he played. I also watched a lot of Disney animation growing up, [laughs] which was probably a good way to keep us quiet but it made me want to do this career and I'm so glad that I've landed where I am now.

You've done lots of stage work. What have been your favourite roles to date?

I would say that Kinky Boots was one of my absolute favourites. I loved playing Lola, going up and down the UK, giving people that sense of escapism but also spreading the message of 'Just be who you wanna be'. This show [Aladdin] is very similar. It says you can be who you want to be. You don't have to just accept the circumstances you were born into. It's wonderful that I get to take these stories - with these characters who are larger than life but who are also very human at the heart of it - up and down the country.

When were you last on tour and what are you most looking forward to about getting back out there?

The last time was with Kinky Boots and I'm really looking forward

to reconnecting with the crowds that I connected with on the tour circuit, going to all the coffee shops that I frequented and seeing new places that I otherwise maybe wouldn't travel to which have loads of hidden gems. The UK is incredible, Ireland is incredible, and there's so much that these cities have to give that I don't get to see all that often. It's amazing that a Disney musical is taking me to these corners of the country.
