Hungry After Eating? Hungry again? It's not just you – turns out, feeling hungry all of the time is more common than you might think. These cravings don't just disrupt our eating habits and food budgets, but they can also become highly frustrating and inconvenient.

In the UK, Google searches for 'most filling lowcalorie foods' have spiked by 250% in the past week, highlighting a rising interest in foods that keep us full for longer. This could reflect that Brits are feeling hungrier during the winter months, a time when colder weather and reduced daylight may influence cravings. UK Registered Nutritionist from Green Chef, Anna Tebbs, comments, “Persistent hunger serves as a crucial warning, indicating potential lifestyle and dietary imbalances that, if unaddressed, can not only disrupt daily energy, focus, and productivity but also pose risks to long-term physical and mental health. “Constantly feeling this way is a reminder to check how our body's needs align with our daily routines. Fixing this isn't just about stopping the hunger; it's a crucial step towards a healthier, more balanced life. When we understand and address why we're always hungry, we can regain control and prevent feeling unnecessarily hungry.” To help you combat these cravings, she recommends these tips to help curb that persistent hunger:

Inadequate Water Intake Dehydration can often be mistaken for hunger, as the body may interpret thirst as a need for food. To address this, make a conscious effort to stay hydrated by drinking at around eight glasses of water a day. Additionally, incorporate hydrating foods like water-rich fruits and vegetables into your diet. Lack of Protein in Diet Protein plays a crucial role in maintaining a feeling of fullness. Ensure you include a varied range of lean protein sources into your diet, such as chicken, fish, beans, nuts, and tofu. This not only helps control hunger but also provides essential nutrients for overall health. Low-Fibre Diet Fibre adds bulk to meals and promotes a sense of fullness. Opt for whole grains, legumes, fruits, and vegetables to increase your fibre intake. Not only does this aid in satiety, but it also supports digestive health.

Mindful Snacking Avoid reaching for less nutritious snacks out of boredom or habit. Instead, choose nutrientdense options such as fruit, nuts or legumes, and pay attention to portion sizes. Practising mindful snacking can help regulate your appetite and contribute to a healthier approach to eating throughout the day.

Stress and Emotional Eating For some of us, stress can lead to emotional eating, typically involving high-calorie comfort foods. Combat stress by practising effective stress management techniques, such as deep breathing, meditation, or engaging in activities that bring you joy and relaxation.

Not Enough Fat in the Diet Healthy fats contribute to a feeling of satiety and support various bodily functions. Incorporate sources of healthy fats, such as avocados, nuts, seeds, and olive oil, into your diet for a balanced and satisfying approach to eating. Over Reliance on Refined Carbohydrates Refined carbohydrates can cause rapid spikes and crashes in blood sugar levels, leading to increased hunger. Opt for complex carbohydrates like whole grains, quinoa, and sweet potatoes to provide sustained energy and help regulate appetite.

Skipping Meals Skipping meals disrupts the body's natural hunger and fullness cues, often leading to overeating later in the day. Plan regular, balanced meals and consider incorporating healthy snacks to avoid prolonged gaps between eating. This helps stabilise blood sugar levels and promotes more consistent energy throughout the day. Lack of Physical Activity Sedentary lifestyles can contribute to increased feelings of hunger. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week to not only support overall health but also help regulate appetite and promote a healthy metabolism.

Note: medical issues or medications can also influence hunger levels, emphasising the need for personalised and informed approaches to dietary changes. This is not medical advice. If readers have symptoms that are causing concern they should seek advice from a healthcare professional.

Taking Things Back t’s something we all do, we buy something that doesn’t fit or isn’t as we thought it would be so we simply, take it back for either a refund or exchange. But that’s not the kind of taking back I am talking about.

I

The things I’m talking about are things that we give away – aspects of ourselves and our wellbeing - and there comes a time when we need to take some of those things back.

Let’s think about our time first of all. Many of us feel short of time yet often we give it away sometimes without really planning to or wanting to. Perhaps you once offered to help someone then suddenly it slides into being a regular thing – almost imperceptibly. Sometimes and when we notice that is the case we need to take stock and take it back. Time is energy it is worth taking stock of where we are spending it. It might be that it is us who fritter away our time and in some ways that’s easier to claim back and worth doing periodically – we can all consider our use of social media, TV watching or other activities, that are not wrong but we need to be aware that time spent is time gone – does the way we spend out time add value? If not, maybe we should take some of it back. Many of us need to put a bit of effort into taking back our mind. We live in a society that seems to value multi-tasking which, while it might have some advantages often means never giving anything our full attention. There seems to be an increase in people suffering from anxiety and overthinking and often the remedy is to work at being ‘present’ in the moment AND guarding what we put into our mind.

When we start to take back our mind it often becomes easier to take back our peace. Pause for a moment and think what is it that robs you of your peace. Very often it is things external to you – the actions of other people or specific situations – often ones we have no control over at all. It is tough but if we can’t alter the outcome of something we shouldn’t let it destroy our peace.

Finding peace can involve accepting certain situations that we find ourselves in, where we have no control over them, forgiving ourselves for things we may have said or done, learning to live in the present moment rather than regretting the past or worrying about the future. When we can do that often we are on the way to finding happiness and joy in the simple pleasures of life.

Part of finding inner peace is also being able to acknowledge you own truth. However, if we have found ourselves in situations where our ‘truth’ has been rejected, we’ve maybe not been able to uphold our values we’ve had people who have perhaps overridden our values and denied the validity of our perspectives then our truth is definitely something we need to take back so we can get to be our authentic selves again.

All of the above, and more, like our power for example, are things we need to make an active choice to take back. If we feel we have been disempowered in a relationship or situation and lost aspects of our freedom, we need to take them back. It might not be something we can do instantly often it is about retraining ourselves and pausing to consider how we react to people and situations.

The fact is that we have one life and it is ours alone. It is not an infinite life, in fact we never know when it could all be cut short so we owe it to ourselves to take back the things that help us live the life we want. Most of us want a life that is healthy and peaceful, one where can be our authentic selves and don’t feel that we need to behave in certain ways or believe certain things in order to gain acceptance or love. Taking things back is all about NOT being a people pleaser! Learning to say no is an important part of that journey. So, if you feel like you aren’t living the life you want and that you have lost aspects of yourself along the way – then now is the time to start taking things back.

Top Tips to Combat the Blues With up to 2 million people in the UK navigating the challenges of SAD annually, Brainworks Neurotherapy's (www.brainworksneurotherapy.com) brain health experts offer valuable insights on how to combat the winter blues beyond traditional light therapy.

One of the best and most effective ways is to adopt a holistic approach to your health, and these simple and easy-to-implement lifestyle changes aim to simultaneously address mood, sleep, physical health, and lifestyle factors. Strategic Sunlight Exposure No matter how dreary the weather outside may be, make it a point to step outside for 10-15 minutes every day before 12:00. To maximise the benefits of this exercise, position yourself to face east, as this aligns you with the direction of the morning sun. It's also important to repeat this practice in the evening, during sunset. This time, you should face west as the sun sets in that direction.

Exposure to natural light in this way and time frame is essential for supporting your hormonal system. This is because the amount of light that enters your eyes during these times directly influences the production and regulation of hormones in your body, such as serotonin, melatonin and cortisol, which play a critical role in mood and sleep patterns. This effectiveness extends even to areas with cloudy weather, as the light can penetrate through clouds. Grounding Grounding, also known as earthing, is a practice that involves physically connecting with the Earth's surface to absorb its natural, subtle electrical charge. The idea behind grounding is that in our modern lives, we are often insulated from direct contact with the Earth due to the prevalence of rubber-soled shoes, buildings, and other non-conductive materials. Research indicates that grounding can reduce inflammation, help manage stress levels, and improve sleep patterns. To practise grounding, all you need is to locate a patch of grass, sand, or even mud and let your bare skin make

contact with the natural earth. In winter conditions, there are several alternative approaches to choose from to practice grounding. One method involves physical contact with a tree or your dog while standing on natural surfaces like stone, sand, or grass. Another option is to wear grounded shoes, with or without grounding socks. Unlike typical footwear, these shoes incorporate conductive materials such as carbon, silver, and copper in both the outer and inner soles, facilitating ground energy transfer to your feet. Aim to spend at least 20 minutes every day practising this to see the benefits.

Bedtime Routine Set a fixed bedtime for every night, and as the clock ticks, put away your phone, turn off the lights, and gently close your eyes. This simple lifestyle adjustment is often underrated, yet it stands as one of the most effective antistress habits. Going to bed at the same time every day offers multiple benefits: It aids in regulating our circadian rhythms, ensuring our body's internal clock is in sync. This, in turn, helps stabilise the production of crucial hormones like melatonin and cortisol. Such regularity not only contributes to improved sleep quality but also plays a vital role in stabilising mood and promoting better mental health.

Connections While the natural reaction when experiencing SAD symptoms might be to isolate oneself, it's essential to try the opposite by nurturing connections with others. Engaging in social activities, whether with friends, family, or support groups, can offer a sense of connection and belonging that acts as a potent antidote to the winter blues. These interactions not only provide emotional support but also serve as a reminder that you are not alone in your battle against SAD. Please note that cases of SAD with more severe symptoms should be evaluated and treated by medical professionals. Treatment options may include cognitivebehavioural therapy, antidepressant medication, or a combination of therapies. In such cases, your GP should be your first point of contact for guidance and appropriate care.

Filo Fish Pie

“A rich fish pie topped with a crispy filo pastry and a silky sauce that simply melts in your mouth” Ingredients

2 sprays of low-calorie cooking spray (add more if needed) 1 onion, peeled and finely chopped 2 leeks, trimmed, washed and sliced 1 garlic clove, peeled and crushed 250ml semi-skimmed milk 350g skinless cod fillets, cut into large chunks 230g skinless smoked haddock fillets, cut into large chunks 2 bay leaves 80g frozen peas 1 pinch each of sea salt and freshly ground black pepper 175g cooked and peeled prawns, drained 1 tbsp cornflour 4 sheets filo pastry 1 egg, beaten

Method

Preheat the oven to 180°C/fan 160°C/350°F/gas mark 4. Spray a large frying pan (with a lid) with low-calorie cooking spray and place over a medium heat. Add the onion and leeks and fry for 10 minutes, until softened. Add the garlic and fry for 2–3 minutes. Add the milk, cod, haddock, bay leaves, peas and seasoning. Cover and simmer over a low heat for 15 minutes or until the fish is just starting to flake. Don't stir; try to keep the fish in chunks. Place a colander over a large bowl. Gently tip the contents of the frying pan into the colander to drain off the cooking liquid. Place the drained fish and vegetables in an 18cm x 27cm (roughly 7in x 10.5in) ovenproof dish, add the prawns and remove the bay leaves. Set aside. Place the cooking liquid in the frying pan and place on a medium heat. Mix the cornflour with 1 tbsp of water until smooth. Stir the cornflour mixture into the cooking liquid and simmer for 3–4 minutes until slightly thickened. Season again if needed. Pour the sauce over the fish and vegetables. Scrunch up each sheet of filo and place on top of the pie. Glaze with the beaten egg. Place in the oven and cook for 30–35 minutes, until piping hot and golden brown.
