Simple Movements to Help Relieve Back Pain Many of us suffer from general aches and pains in our backs, most likely caused by a lack of movement or from spending the day hunched over a computer.

We caught up with Korin Nolan (one of the UK’s leading Pilates experts and founder of Power Pilates UK studio in London) to show us a few simple moves you can do to strengthen and support your back. Curl Up To get into position: Lay on your back with your feet flat down and knees bent. Interlock your hands behind your head and lift your elbows a little. Inhale to prepare, engage your core, exhale and curl your head off the matt with your chin to your chest.

• Inhale as you lower your head back down. Focusing on keeping length in your neck by keeping your head heavy in your hands. Ensure you move nice and slowly and repeat 10-20 times. Extension To get into position: Lay on your front with your legs apart and your hands under your forehead. • Inhale as you engage your core and push your pubic bone towards the matt.

• Exhale as you lift your head and your hands together. • You do not have to lift very high just work on keeping your abs engaged and your shoulders down towards your lower back. • Ensure once again you are moving nice and slowly and repeat 10-15 times.

Rotation To get into position: Lay on your side, bending your knees, stacking your hips on top of one another and arms reaching out in front of you. • Inhale to prepare, as you exhale engage the core lifting your top arm and reaching back as far as you can reach. • Ensure your hips stay still as you do this, head following your top hand so it rolls backwards onto the mat. • Inhale, breathing into the stretch and as you exhale return to the starting point. • Repeat this exercise 5-10 times Lateral Flexion To get into position: sit with your knees to one side, one knee forwards and one knee back and place one hand down the opposite side to your feet • Inhale and as you exhale lift your hips and reach your free hand over your head into a side bend. • Repeat 5-10 times each side. www.korinnolan.com

HOW HEALTHY ARE YOUR VEINS? Around 20 million people in the UK live with poor vein health and whilst this doesn’t usually cause lifethreatening concerns, for most, the discomfort, pain and self-consciousness has a big impact on quality of life and for many, it often leads to poor body image.

Most of us understand the importance of good cardiovascular health, but how many of us think specifically about good vein health? Understanding and identifying the early signs of vein problems can often prevent worsening problems as we get older.

Each adult has around 60,000 miles of blood vessels (arteries, veins and capillaries) inside their body, enough to wrap around our planet more than twice, whilst our arteries carry oxygenated blood around the body, veins carry the de-oxygenated blood back to the heart. Tiny oneway valves ensure that the blood flows in the right direction, but when these valves become damaged and stop working effectively, it can be difficult for blood to work against the forces of gravity and it collects (pools) and causes swelling. Professor Stephen Black, Vascular Consultant and Surgeon at UK Vein Clinic describes the effects of unhealthy veins: “Swollen veins cause swelling, usually in the legs and ankles, which can lead to a tired, heavy and achy feeling. They can become itchy and painful, and when they start to become noticeable, can cause distress and embarrassment because they don’t look very nice. Some patients also experience numbness, tingling or burning sensations and most people who live with vein disorders find standing for long periods of time uncomfortable, and in the longer-term, may find that wounds take longer to heal.”

Who’s at risk? Family history is a major factor in vein health and if one or both of your parents has suffered from varicose veins, there’s a strong possibility that you will too.

Vein disorders, sometimes called vein disease or Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI), are more common in older people and women, although they can affect people of any age, regardless of their gender. Lifestyle also influences vein health: being overweight increases risk and smokers are also more likely to develop problems with their veins.

People who spend large parts of the day on their feet, like hairdressers, shopworkers, nurses and air crew, are also at higher risk for vein disorders. When the damaged valves in their veins aren’t working effectively, blood can’t keep moving upwards and the effects of gravity lead to the blood pooling. HOW CAN YOU SPOT VEIN DISORDERS? Unfortunately, a lack of understanding means that too

many people put up with vein problems because for the most part, they simply don’t know the difference between healthy veins and veins that might need a little bit more attention. Lots of people think that it’s just a part of getting older but knowing how to recognise the signs of vein problems can put you back in control and help you take steps to address the problems before they start to control your life. Professor Stephen Black, Vascular Consultant and Surgeon describes five signs that can indicate poor vein health

Poor circulation symptoms Numbness or tingling in the hands or feet, or cold hands and feet can often be the first sign of poor circulation, because it can mean that the blood flow is restricted. It’s always recommended that you get this checked out by a healthcare professional to investigate the causes and understand potential complications. Prominent veins Veins that are noticeable, particularly in your legs or feet are often the first sign of potential problems. If the tiny valves in veins are damaged, blood pools in other veins, which causes them to become enlarged and more noticeable.

Heavy, tired or aching legs Patients often report that their legs ache and feel heavy and swollen, which is because of the build-up of fluid and the poor circulation of healthy blood. It can often take extra effort just to move and legs feel fatigued, particularly towards the end of the day or if they’ve been on their feet for long periods of time. This doesn’t always occur with prominent veins, so the heavy aching feeling can be the first sign of vein problems for some patients.

Changes to skin Deteriorating veins can become apparent in other, less obvious ways. As blood circulation deteriorates, the skin around the ankle and leg can thin and appear shiny; gradually the skin becomes harder and drier, which may eventually lead to cracking or discolouration.

Burning, throbbing, painful or itchy varicose veins Most patients may not realise the destructive impact that their damaged veins are having on the skin and tissues surrounding them. This unpleasant combination of impaired circulation and varicose eczema causes dry, inflamed and itchy skin, and is often accompanied by a painful burning or throbbing sensation, which gets worse in warmer weather as the veins and tissues expand to lower body temperature. These signs are indicating factors that you may have a vein disease, or that your varicose veins have experienced complications and require further treatment. Midlife Madness I must confess I’ve been enjoying getting back to things we love, eating out, visiting the theatre and other attractions and of course entertaining ay home. But during the years of lockdowns and restrictions things seem to have changed.

I’ll start with the house, never pristine but after a couple of years of not entertaining much, if at all, certain lax habits have crept in. Perhaps my housework hasn’t been done with much gusto, so it was a bit of a surprise to see quite how many spiders have taken up residence in the dark corners of our abode, and while our table may have been used for jigsaws or ‘creative’ endeavours rarely have we used it to eat off, preferring ‘teas on knees’ with a box set. Entertaining therefore presented a few challenges! I can’t believe how reckless we must have been with crockery and glassware – cutlery fared better but it is pretty non-breakable. There were only 5 of us for dinner but we really struggled to get 5 of anything that matched, plates, bowls or glasses, and didn’t have chips!! I never actually noticed us breaking things but clearly, we must have – honestly, we didn’t throw plates at each other with any great regularity.

I also hadn’t noticed how utterly grubby the carpets had become, yes, we did a lot of walks, in all weathers, but I thought we usually took shoes off when we came home! We decided to play cards – something we’ve not done with just the 2 of us and it took a lot of memory work, guesswork and numerous ‘dummy’ rounds before we could remember all the rules. On, the plus side though I forgot how much we laughed with friends and it was really good to get back to that. One of the other aspects to entertaining is that often return invites are issued, and similarly with theatre outings, what on earth does one wear. Or worryingly, because I have a wardrobe full of dresses I’ve hardly

worn for the last two years, what still fits! Also, what still has the right number of attached buttons or zips that still work. How can things go so disastrously wrong in a wardrobe?

I know everybody’s journey is different but for me I’ve changed from travelling all over England to now largely being based at home, I used to have nails done regularly and pay perhaps slightly more attention to make up than seems necessary when conducting most business from the small bedroom now study.

But as I mentioned at the beginning I really enjoyed getting back to going out as well as entertaining at home. So, as well as finally enjoying a theatre trip that was a Christmas present from 2019 the other week I had also booked a couple of outings. One such was the immersive Van Gogh experience in London which I really enjoyed, but when we came to go - could I find the tickets? Trawling emails for hours all I could only find one ticket. Ridiculous because no part of me would ever book 1 ticket – especially as it was a giftie for him indoors. But I searched and searched and all I was ever able to find was one ticket. Perhaps we were foolish but we decided to go anyway. After a fairly ridiculous journey with delayed trains and being given fairly hopeless advice to get off the slow train and catch the delayed fast train at Luton (thank goodness we didn’t take that advice or we’d have missed both trains and been even later) we got to the venue explained our predicament in that I was sure I’d bought 2 but they only found one – but bank statement looked like I’d paid for 2- the very kind lady decided to pay it forward and give us the benefit of the doubt. Faith in humanity restored, at least temporarily. I suppose getting back to what we love also means getting back to stuff we don’t love so very much or do as well as we used to like housework and booking the right number of tickets!

The Rhythm of Life Nature and life are all about rhythms. Life is not static it involves change, constantly. Each day we have a rhythm, the circadian rhythm is an internal process that regulates our sleep and wake cycle. There are monthly rhythms in terms of ovulation and rhythms throughout life in terms of the different phases, childhood puberty adulthood mid-life and aging.

These happen whether we like it or not. In nature we have the seasons, we can see new life sprouting all around us as spring flowers begin to bloom. It’s not so much about the weather, though that is part of it, but about the rhythm of life. The moon waxes and wanes and tides go in and out. Nothing about life or nature is static. But in todays world we have come to be used to things that work in the same way, all of the time. You can shop online at midnight, book flights or theatre in the middle of the night send emails via automated servers which work all of the time and are not dependent on mood or the usual rhythms of life, though there may be the occasional ‘outage’.

We are not automated, though sometimes we try to live our lives in way that is. Trying to be productive all the time, to keep going all the time behaving a bit like a machine and sadly learning NOT to listen to the signals our bodies and mind give us about what we need.

To maintain our wellbeing, we’d be wise to acknowledge that we are not designed to work non-stop, to always be available, to always perform to the same standard. Our humanity demands that we have periods of rest and relaxation, periods of a slower pace. Listen to what you need The first step to learning to live in tune worth our rhythms is learning to listen to our body and mind. They give us signals that we’d be wise to listen to – but modern life means that we often skip meals even though we are hungry – keep working even though we are tired or stressed.

I acknowledge that it is tough to give ourselves what we need at times but there is a price to be paid for not doing so. As humans, small amounts of stress are good for us but as we probably all know prolonged stress has a negative impact on the body. We can survive with less sleep than we

need or less food than we need though in my experience its not that we eat less when we are very busy but rather eat foods that are not so good for us. We can skip exercise or meeting friends, or spending time with our family for short periods of time without it being particularly detrimental. But when you start to do this often it can quickly become the norm. Ultimately that is likely to cause problems. Take Action Listening is all very well and we have probably all had times when we listen to the signals our body or mind gives us but then carry on regardless, ignoring those messages. The point of listening to our body or mind is to do something, to act. We’ll often tell ourselves we will slow down relax rest as soon as this crisis is over but we rarely do we get used to working and living at a different pace. Sometimes it’s because we don’t actually believe we can change or that somehow, we need to do what ever is asked of us. As ever if that is the case it’s a change of mindset that is needed.

Begin by reminding yourself that your needs count just as much as anyone else’s.

Yes, it’s nice to please others to be kind and caring but not to the detriment of your own wellbeing. Part of prioritising your own needs is learning to say no. That can be tough and really is only possible when there is an underlying belief that you deserve to be able to look after yourself, that your needs matter that you are important. The key to learning to live with regard to life’s rhythms is self-love, an appropriate valuing of yourself and your needs. If you don’t value something it’s hard to look after it -what really is the point. So, accept that you are of value, you matter and start making decision about what you will and won’t do based on that premise.

In some ways we are machines, many intricate systems combined and to keep them all working smoothly takes care, but we are so much more than a machine and when we pay attention to our rhythms we’ll be better able to function well. Melt the butter and white chocolate in a heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water, stirring now and then until smooth. Remove from the heat and leave to cool for 5 mins. Tip the muscovado and caster sugars and the eggs into a large, clean bowl and whisk for 2 mins until the mixture is thick and foamy. Whisk a quarter of the mixture into the melted chocolate and butter mixture along with the vanilla. Carefully fold in the rest of the egg mixture until smooth, then fold in the flour, baking powder and a pinch of salt until everything is combined. Roughly chop 100g of the mini chocolate eggs, then fold into the batter. Pour the batter into the tin and gently shake to level the surface. Press half of the remaining whole mini chocolate eggs into the top. Bake the blondies for 45-50 minutes. Check they are cooked by giving the tin a gentle shake – they should be mostly set, with a slight wobble in the centre. Remove from the oven and immediately press the rest of the whole mini chocolate eggs into the top (these can be roughly crushed or halved first for a different texture, if you like). Leave to cool completely in the tin. Don't worry if the mixture sinks slightly. Once cooled, the blondies will be gooey, fudgy and moist, cut into squares and serve. RECIPE: BBC Good Food

Fry’s Footie Corner

We are fast approaching the end of the 2021-2022 campaign and there is still all to play for across the divisions with none more competitive than Sky Bet League Two. There are a host of teams that will feel they are within touching distance of automatic promotion and others that will feel they are timing their run perfectly for a shot of the play-offs.

job at Barrow and I think this is an example of club’s getting scared of suffering relegation to the National League and you can understand why. There are some huge clubs at that level and with only two promotion spots and one of them through the play-offs, a number of clubs with huge budgets are going to miss out.

At the other end of the table, Steve Evans, a former manager of Posh, has taken over the reins of Stevenage. They had been in freefall under Paul Tisdale and it is a wise appointment by Phil Wallace to get Steve and his right hand man Paul Raynor in. I fully expect them to put a string of results together and move away from the danger zone. Another former Posh boss, Mark Cooper, lost his

For us at Peterborough United, we will fight until the end. It is going to be difficult, but all we can do is focus on ourselves and try and get points on the board. We believe that we have the management team in place to enjoy a positive campaign next term whatever league we are in.

At the time of writing, one of the most in-form teams across the 92 is Bristol Rovers. I think most people assumed Joey Barton’s men would bounce straight back after relegation last term, but they took time to settle at the new level. However, they have put together an unbelievable run and are handily placed going into the final run of games.

You would think Stockport County would get the job done and Wrexham are flying too under the leadership of Phil Parkinson, but when you consider Notts County, Dagenham and Redbridge, Southend United and so many more are going to miss out, you realise just how tough that division is.

Let’s Talk Les Misérables with Dean Chisnall (Jean Valjean) and Nic Greenshields (Javert) You’re both playing two of the most iconic roles in musical theatre, Jean Valjean and Javert in Les Misérables. What’s it like taking on roles like these? Dean Chisnall: I say it to everybody, this is the dream role for anybody in musical theatre. It’s the pinnacle for any male performer and I just feel very lucky to do it, and to have done it for as long as I have. I’ve now played over 500 performances as Jean Valjean, and it still feels as magical as it did the first time I stepped on the stage. I pinch myself every day. Nic Greenshields: It’s a great privilege to play Javert. I first saw the show when I was in my teens, and to be doing it 25-years later is a huge honour. I try to bring out a different side to Javert, giving him multiple dimensions and making him more than just the baddie, showing a more emotional side to him.

Were you both fans of the show before being part of it, do you remember your first experience of Les Mis? DC: I do remember the first time I saw it. I’ve always been a fan, long before I even dreamt of having a career in theatre. I was in London on my own about the age of 18 and pootled off to get myself a single ticket to see Les Misérables at The Palace Theatre. I sat there and completely fell in love with the show. NG: I remember buying a cassette when I was about 11 years old of people singing songs from Les Mis. I remember listening to it and trying to imagine what the show would

be like. Eventually I begged my Mum to take me, and we queued for returns. I was just blown away. The show really resonated with me, and I thought “I want to be part of this. This is what I want to do.”

You’ve both played these roles for a long period of time. Have you found that your understanding of the character has changed since you first began performing the role? NG: Most definitely. I’ve changed since I first covered the role. I’m a dad now, I’m older and more mature and have experienced life a bit more. I’m now able to identify a lot more layers to him. It’s a great role and there’s no other role in the show I would rather do. I always like to discover more about him as I continue to play him. DC: I say to people that we always try to strive for perfection, which is not attainable, which means you never stop trying to achieve it. With someone like Jean Valjean, he is very complex in many ways but very simple in others, it’s always a challenge to try and work him out and I love that about him. I think I’ve probably played him a little bit differently every performance. There’s always something new you can find in him and he’s a wonderful person to play. What are your favourite moments in the show? DC: I love Bring Him Home. I know it’s a song that I sing on my own, but it has always felt like a whole company

apr22.qxp_Jan 2014 Aff 28/03/2022 20:05 Page 43

moment. The rest of the cast are asleep on the barricades, so it always feels quite magical. I also love the absolutely iconic One Day More, with the whole company there. To be honest, the whole show is two and a half hours of pure magic. NG: I absolutely agree, One Day More is such an iconic moment for everyone. There is no better way to end the first act of a

show! I always enjoy listening to Fantine sing ‘I Dreamed A Dream’, it’s a great number and I defy anyone to come and see it and not love that moment. The moments I have with Dean are wonderfully dramatic. I love the opening with the prisoners, and the moment that moves me is the finale with Valjean and Cosette. It’s musically so beautiful and the lyrics are stunning as well.

Does the role require a lot of stamina as a performer, and what helps you to perform each night? NG: I took up running during lockdown! I felt I needed to do something, and just before we started rehearsals, I ran a half marathon which was a big achievement. All the roles are demanding, if you keep delivering at the level we want to, it is tough work. You do have to look after yourself. Dean and I try and take care of our voices and energy to ensure that we’re performing well eight shows a week. DC: Preparation is key! Trying to stay healthy and get some sleep. I love my job, so it’s not a chore and I don’t think of it as being exhausting. It is tiring but I have to say probably more mentally exhausting than it is physically because of who Jean Valjean is and what a marathon journey he goes on. We are here to give the audience some sort of escape

and of course actors like to escape into a role as well. I undoubtedly feel that I am somewhere else during those two and a half hours, you have to live and breathe these characters. You can’t fake Les Mis. Why do you think audiences still love to come and see Les Mis? DC: The messages of Les Mis are still so relevant. Everyone has something that they can relate to in the show, something that they have experienced in their lives. The show now is as fresh as it ever was, it’s a wonderful company that we’ve got here, and we’re delighted to be sharing it with people. There is no show that has a reaction quite like this one. It’s the greatest show on earth. NG: The music is definitely a huge part of it. The score is stunning and has really broken through into popular culture bringing it to a new audience. Ultimately, I think the show has remained so popular because of the themes. It’s a show about redemption and the human condition and everything that still resonates with us all today. We connect with the characters and become engrossed in the story and the beautiful music pulls everything together. It’s clearly a magical formula.

Have you ever been given a piece of advice that has stuck with you? DC: I think just take on as much information as possible, as you’re like a sponge in rehearsals. I also always want the people I’ve worked with before to want to work with me again. So, just be nice, be kind and be a team player. Those are the fundamentals of being part of a show. NG: Mine is the same as Dean’s really, it really is so important to be nice to people, and to remember everything is a collaborative effort. I also remember my principal at drama school, Betty Laine, really instilling in me never to be late. I have a real thing about that, and I always plan to be early! Les Misérables is at Milton Keynes Theatre from Tuesday 26 April to Saturday 21 May.
