The Healing Power of Nature

In a world that is increasingly digital, fast-paced, and overwhelmed with noise, many people are rediscovering something ancient and profoundly simple: the healing power of nature. For centuries, human beings have found comfort, inspiration, and restoration in the natural world. Whether it's a quiet walk in the forest, the sound of waves crashing on the shore, or the simple act of breathing in fresh mountain air, nature has an undeniable ability to soothe our minds, heal our bodies, and nurture our spirits. This connection is not just poetic or philosophical—it is increasingly backed by science.

Nature and Mental Health

One of the most studied aspects of nature's healing power is its effect on mental health. Numerous studies have shown that spending time in green spaces can significantly reduce symptoms of anxiety, depression, and stress. The Japanese practice of shinrin-yoku, or "forest bathing," is a prime example. This simple act of immersing oneself in a forest environment has been shown to lower cortisol levels (a key stress hormone), reduce blood pressure, and improve mood.

City life often disconnects people from natural surroundings, leading to what researchers call “nature deficit disorder.” While not a formal medical diagnosis, this term reflects the growing recognition that time spent away from nature can negatively impact psychological well-being. Green spaces provide a kind of mental “reset,” allowing individuals to disengage from technology and constant stimulation, and instead connect with something quieter, older, and more enduring.

Even brief exposures to nature—like a 20-minute walk in a park—can significantly boost mood and cognitive performance. Hospitals that include gardens or views of natural landscapes have found that patients recover faster and require fewer pain medications. These findings suggest that nature does not just make us feel better; it actively contributes to our healing.

Physical Health Benefits

Nature’s healing power is not limited to the mind; it also extends to the body. Physical activity in natural settings, like hiking, swimming, or biking, improves cardiovascular health, strengthens muscles, and enhances immune function. But even without strenuous exercise, simply being in nature can have profound physiological effects.

Trees and plants emit organic compounds called phytoncides, which have been shown to increase the number and activity of natural killer (NK) cells in the human body. These cells play a critical role in fighting off infections. Additionally, exposure to sunlight helps our bodies produce vitamin D, which is essential for bone health, immune function, and mood regulation.

Nature also promotes better sleep. The natural light-dark cycle, as well as the calming environment of natural settings, helps regulate circadian rhythms and improve sleep quality. This is particularly important in a modern society where artificial lighting and screen time can disrupt normal sleep patterns.

Spiritual and Emotional Restoration

For many people, nature is not just a physical environment—it is a spiritual sanctuary. The aweinspiring beauty of a sunrise, the intricate patterns of a snowflake, or the rhythmic crashing of ocean waves can evoke a deep sense of peace and connection to something greater than ourselves. This spiritual nourishment is an essential aspect of healing.

Nature also brings us perspective. When standing on the edge of a hill or mountain looking at the sky and breathing in the air or even when we’re staring up at a sky full of stars, our everyday worries can suddenly seem small. This shift in perspective helps reduce rumination and can foster a sense of humility, wonder, and purpose.

Social and Community Connections

Engaging with nature also encourages stronger social bonds. Community gardens, hiking clubs and other nature-based activities bring people together around shared values and goals. These activities can bring a sense of belonging, support mental health, and reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation.

Moreover, teaching children to engage with the natural world helps cultivate empathy, responsibility, and respect—for others and for the planet. When communities prioritise access to green spaces, they often see improvements in overall well-being, safety, and cohesion.

Break your ‘Doomscrolling’ habit with a new hobby

It’s a familiar picture for many of us: after a long day at work, we find ourselves glued to the couch, phone in hand. Maybe even for hours at a time. What starts as a way to mentally unwind or catch up on the news quickly becomes hours spent compulsively “doomscrolling” – the act of spending an excessive amount of time on social media scrolling through overwhelmingly negative content. A fear of missing out is what drives many of us to continue our repetitive scroll.

While it might feel like doomscrolling helps you to stay informed, research shows that this habit often results in considerable psychological distress. This ultimately leads to lower mental wellbeing, poorer life satisfaction, and reduced engagement at work.

We spoke to Dr Emma Palmer-Cooper, a Chartered Research Psychologist who told us the good news that there are many ways to break this bad habit – and oneway people have successfully replaced time on their phones is with a hobby.

By making a conscious decision to change a habit –such as picking up your phone and doomscrolling for hours – you can replace it with one that’s more fulfilling.

Having an after-work hobby is linked to better wellbeing and may play a part in reducing workrelated stress.

Creative activities in particular are known to encourage a sense of personal fulfilment through developing new skills. Personal fulfilment is important for emotional resilience.

Some of the most beneficial hobbies to try in order to break your doomscrolling habit are those that encourage mindfulness. Doing a hobby mindfully simply means paying attention to what you’re doing and being in the moment – whether that’s colouring, knitting or sewing.

Mindfulness is the practice of focusing your attention on the present moment and experiencing your thoughts and feelings without judgment. It’s not necessarily about clearing your mind, but about engaging in an activity with your full attention, and not being distracted by other thoughts.

Here are just a few ways that mindful hobbies can help you break your doomscrolling habit.

They hold positive attention - When you’re focused on a craft, your hands are busy, so you’ll be too engaged to reach for your phone. Creative hobbies that require

attention, such as knitting or colouring, can also act as a “flow activity”, where you lose track of time and feel fully immersed in what you’re doing. This can be a great antidote to losing hours doomscrolling.

They’re calming - Many people who have a creative hobby say the physical repetitive actions are meditative and calming.

Crafts can also support healthy emotion regulation –our ability to manage and respond to emotional experiences. Soothing your nervous system can counteract tension triggered by doomscrolling.

They provide a sense of achievement - Doomscrolling can leave people feeling a loss of control, whereas mindful hobbies provide a sense of control along with tangible results: a colourful drawing, a knitted scarf or perhaps an embroidered trinket.

Achievement is considered one of the core ingredients of psychological wellbeing – and is a key remedy to distress.

They reduce stress and anxiety - Mindful crafting offers a break from ruminating. Just ten minutes of regular mindful colouring – at least three times a week for two weeks – can reduce stress, anxiety and feelings of low mood, alongside improving quality of life.

Creative hobbies can also significantly lower levels of our stress hormone, cortisol, which promotes a sense relaxation.

They offer a sense of belonging - By engaging in a new hobby you also join a community of people with similar interests. This opens you up to more positive social interactions, and a sense of belonging is linked to better wellbeing.

Activities such as colouring, knitting, sewing and crochet are a good place to start as they involve repetitive, soothing movements along with a sense of achievement. Of course, you should choose a hobby you think you’ll enjoy, as you won’t build new habits doing activities you don’t want to do.

Start small. Actively setting a small and achievable change in behaviour can increase your success in building new, positive habits. So to begin with, choose a simple project that’s not too hard to complete – such as colouring a single page or knitting a small square. Or, set a goal to spend 10-20 minutes a day on your hobby after work before reaching for your phone. Early, achievable wins lead to a sense of achievement, and keep you motivated.

Spring Clean Your Health

As the days get longer and the daffodils return, spring brings a chance to reawaken your energy and shake off the winter cobwebs – physically, mentally, and emotionally. Walk into spring with an added sense of renewal, play, and lightness.

We spoke to ‘The Happy Pear’ who share 10 fresh and joyful ways to spring clean your health from the inside out.

Grow Something – Even on a Windowsill!

Spring is literally about growth, so get involved!

Try planting herbs like basil, mint, or parsley on your windowsill – or take a few beans like chickpeas or whole lentils and start sprouting your own. Watching something grow (especially if you eat it!) is grounding, joyful, and naturally mindful.

Go Foraging: Make Nettle Tea or Soup

Nettles are one of nature’s superfoods and are abundant right now. Pick them (wear gloves!), steep them into tea or add them to potato and leek soup. Nettles are rich in iron, calcium and minerals – and foraging reconnects you with local food, nature, and old traditions. There is also lots of wild garlic around at the moment too which is fab in pasta, pesto or risotto.

Catch a Sunrise & Listen to the Dawn Chorus

Get up early one morning and head out for sunrise. Spring birdsong – the dawn chorus – is one of the most uplifting natural concerts there is! Add a flask of tea and a friend and you’ve got a life-affirming morning with zero cost!

Eat the Rainbow of Spring

This season brings its own colour palette –radishes, spring greens, purple sprouting broccoli, wild garlic, rhubarb. Make it a game: how many colours can you eat today? Your gut (and microbiome) will love the diversity, and so will your tastebuds.

Go Barefoot for 10 Minutes a Day

Sounds odd, but studies show that ‘earthing’ –standing or walking barefoot on grass or sand –can reduce stress and inflammation. Try it in the

garden or at the beach. Just 5-10 minutes can help you feel grounded and recharged.

Get Outside (Not Just for Steps)

We’ve all heard “get your steps in”, but spring is a chance to do it differently. Swap the treadmill for a forest path. Trade headphones for birdsong. Exposure to natural light and green spaces has been linked to improved gut health, immunity, and mood.

Declutter Your Snack Cupboard

Spring clean your kitchen too. Ditch the ultraprocessed, beige snacks and stock your cupboards with colourful, whole food goodies –nuts, fresh fruit, roasted chickpeas, hummus, dark chocolate. Keep them visible and you’ll be more likely to eat them.

Cook with a Friend (or a Child)

Cooking doesn’t need to be solo or stressful. Invite a friend over and make a big pot of lentil stew, or let the kids join in and make a mess with pizzas. Food should be joyful, and shared.

Unplug for an Evening a Week

Try one tech-free evening a week. No phones, no scrolling, no screens. Cook, chat, walk, read, or just be. Spring is a reminder that life happens outside the feed – it’s blooming, buzzing and real.

Pick One New Weekly Ritual

Whether it’s a Sunday sea swim, a Saturday market visit, or Friday evening soup-making; pick one new weekly ritual that brings joy, nourishment, and connection. Rituals anchor us and help us stay healthy without needing ‘willpower’.

Health doesn’t have to mean being strict or ‘on track’. Spring is a season of possibility and pleasure, and sometimes a mug of nettle tea in the garden is more powerful than any supplement.

Pea Pesto Pasta Salad

Full of springtime flavours and tasty textures, this dish is an alfresco favourite

Ingredients

1lb small pasta shells

1 (16-oz.) bag frozen peas, steamed and divided

2 cloves garlic, peeled and smashed

1 1/4 cups fresh basil

1/2 cup flat-leaf parsley, leaves and stems

1/2 cup freshly grated parmesan cheese

2 Tbsp lemon zest (from about 2 lemons)

1/4 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice (from about 2 lemons)

1/4 cup plus 2 tbsp. extra virgin olive oil, plus more for drizzling

Kosher salt, to taste

Ground black pepper, to taste

6 slices prosciutto

1/2 cup panko breadcrumbs

3 cups baby arugula

1 cup mozzarella pearls

Method

Bring a large pan of salted water to the boil. Cook the pasta until al dente, about 2 minutes less than the package directions. Drain, keep 1/2 cup pasta water. Transfer the pasta to a large bowl, and set aside to cool.

In a food processor, combine 1 1/4 cup peas with the garlic, basil, parsley, 1/4 cup parmesan cheese, 1 tablespoon lemon zest, and 2 tablespoons lemon juice. Pulse until the pesto begins to come together. Scrape down the sides of the bowl with a rubber spatula. Slowly stream in 1/4 cup olive oil with the food processor running until the pesto is smooth. Season with salt and pepper, then transfer the pesto to the bowl of cooled pasta. Toss the pasta and pesto together, adding the reserved pasta water, 1 to 2 tablespoons at a time, if necessary to thin the sauce.

In a large non-stick pan, heat the remaining 2 tablespoons of olive oil over medium heat. Working in batches if necessary, arrange the prosciutto in an even layer and cook, turning occasionally, until crisp, 6 to 8 minutes. Remove from the pan, and transfer to a plate lined with paper towels to drain. Add the panko breadcrumbs to the pan, along with another drizzle of olive oil if the pan seems dry. Cook, stirring often, until lightly golden and toasted, 3 to 5 minutes. Transfer to a small bowl. To the breadcrumbs, add 1 teaspoon of lemon zest and the remaining 1/4 cup of parmesan cheese. Stir and set aside. Roughly chop the crispy prosciutto and add half to the bowl of pasta. Add the remaining peas, arugula, and mozzarella, along with the remaining 2 teaspoons of lemon zest, remaining 2 tablespoons of lemon juice, and a good drizzle of olive oil and stir together. Taste and adjust the seasoning as necessary, then serve the pasta salad sprinkled with the lemon-parmesan breadcrumbs and remaining crispy prosciutto.

Classic Carrot Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting

This afternoon tea classic is a sweet, lightly spiced, carrot walnut cake with a tangy cream cheese frosting, delicious!

Ingredients

150 g cups carrots, grated

3 Clarence Court Burford Brown eggs

220 g brown sugar

180 ml vegetable or sunflower oil

120 g walnuts or pecans, chopped

40 g raisins (optional)

1 teaspoon vanilla

150g cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

1 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon cumin

½ teaspoon ginger powder

Pinch of salt

Frosting

150 g cream cheese (room temperature)

100 g powdered sugar, sifted

50 g butter (room temperature)

Edible flowers (optional)

Chopped walnuts (optional)

Method

Preheat the oven to 300F / 170C / Gas 3 and grease a 20cm round tin. Alternatively, you can use a square tin of 17 to 20 cm. You can also use a layer of parchment paper to line the base.

In a large bowl mix the eggs and sugar. Whisk them until the sugar has completely dissolved.

Gradually add the oil into the mix and whisk after each addition. Once you obtain a homogeneous mixture, add the grated carrots, walnuts, raisins, and vanilla extract. Mix well.

Bake for about 30 minutes until the top turns golden brown and it’s cooked through. You can check with a wooden skewer if the cake has cooked through – it should come out clean.

Allow the cake cool down completely on a wire rack. Meanwhile, prepare the cream cheese frosting. Beat the butter until it’s fluffy and light. Then add the cream cheese and powdered sugar. Beat until it’s all well incorporated and you achieve a creamy texture. Place the frosting in the fridge for at least 30 minutes before you spread it on the cake. Once the cake has cooled down and the frosting has chilled, you can proceed with decorating the cake. First spread the frosting over the cake. You can go for a fluffy messy look or for a more smooth look. Then add your favourite toppings! Any leftover carrot cake can be stored covered in the fridge for up to five days.

Alternatively you can freeze the unfrosted cakes for between 2-3 months. Simply double wrap it tightly in some plastic wrap or an airtight freezer-safe bag, to maintain texture and avoid freezer burn. Allow it to thaw overnight then frost before serving.

A New Era of Timeless Glamour in Mauritius

St. Regis Hotels & Resorts is set to unveil The St. Regis Le Morne Resort, Mauritius on 6th May 2025. Set against the dramatic backdrop of Le Morne Brabant Mountain, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with cliffs that soar down to one of the Indian Ocean’s most coveted beaches, the resort will bring the brand’s celebrated traditions, sophisticated dining and signature family programming to the island’s best beachfront address.

As part of a rebrand from JW Marriott Mauritius Resort to The St. Regis Le Morne Resort, Mauritius, the all-suite property has undergone thoughtful enhancements including elevating the dining experience at the signature Le Manoir restaurant presenting refined Mauritian curries infused with local ingredients. The restaurant’s renovated French-inspired La Patisserie offers handcrafted pastries including the Signature Exotic, a tropical delight of creamy passion fruit, banana and mango, topped with poached pineapple, vanilla and coconut mousse.

Later this year, the resort’s ocean front villa will be reimagined as The St. Regis Grand Beachfront Villa. Inspired by private retreats favoured by the brand’s founding family, the Astors, the 1,659 square meter villa will be one of the largest in the Indian Ocean accommodating up to 16 guests with direct access to the beach and features four guestrooms each with their own deck, indoor and outdoor living spaces, three plunge pools and an infinity pool.

The St. Regis Le Morne Resort, Mauritius will honour the brand’s signature tradition by marking the transition from day to night with a celebratory champagne sabering at seven o’ clock in the evening, set against the stunning backdrop of the setting sun. Guests can enjoy an Afternoon Tea by the Sea offering an array of the finest teas, either by the beach or in the shade of the grand colonial veranda at La Patisserie.

The world-renowned Bloody Mary cocktail, which was first created at The St. Regis New York’s King Cole Bar in 1934, will be presented with local flavours and ingredients. ‘L’île Mary’ will feature local Cane Rhum, slowly infused with curry leaves with a touch of mango vinegar, freshly pressed lemon juice, black pepper and cayenne with a ripe tomato juice base and crowned by masala foam.

The legendary St. Regis Butler Service, a personalised hallmark of the brand for more than a century, will ensure that each guest’s individual preferences are anticipated at every turn.

Offering crafted experiences to connect with the destination, culture and cuisine. As part of the Family Traditions programming, children can enjoy a magical experience flying colourful kites along Le Morne beach, renowned for its gentle breezy days. Other activities include private kite surfing lessons and horse riding.

Guests can embark on guided walks on Le Morne mountain and enjoy light refreshments at the first plateau overlooking the lush landscape and azure waters whilst the more adventurous can hike to its summit. Culinary workshops will include the Chef's Table, a private dining experience guided by local flavours and heritage dishes from herbs and produce forged from Caroline’s Garden, a space named after Caroline Astor.

Launching later this year, The St. Regis Le Morne Pirogue, a beautifully renovated traditional Mauritian boat, will set sail offering family fishing trips, private excursions of the lagoon and romantic sunset cruises, complete with refreshments.

Le Morne Peninsula is one of the most captivating sites for water sports activities in Mauritius and is a favourite spot for the world’s elite kite surf aficionados. Enthusiasts can venture to the thrilling, world famous ‘One Eye’ wave or enjoy the site’s other smaller wave spots. Those preferring more serene water sport pursuits can embark on snorkelling and kayaking adventures through Le Morne’s turquoise lagoon.

A Peaceful Retreat in Puglia Puglia

Ostuni a Mare is just a short stroll from the seafront of Ostuni in Puglia, Italy – where Salento meets the Itria Valley – Ostuni a Mare is a contemporary gated resort surrounded by Mediterranean shrubland with only the soft sound of birdsong breaking the silence.

As part of the hotel’s ongoing refurbishment, Ostuni a Mare will unveil 29 newly renovated suites for 2025, meaning there will now be 40 in total. The number of Junior Suites will decrease from 16 to 8, as these suites have now doubled in size. Finally, the number of rooms (comfort, deluxe etc.) will decrease from 195 to 154. The reason for this is because some of the existing rooms have been enlarged - It’s about quality, not quantity.

Located on the ground and first floors, the Junior Suites come with either a veranda or a furnished terrace. The interiors evoke Puglia’s timeless essence with whitewashed walls, stone floors, and textural soft furnishings crafted from local materials. Each suite includes a separate lounge area ideal for families with young children.

The 29 new Suites offer an elevated take on the same layout, with two bathrooms (one featuring a bathtub), a walk-in wardrobe, and expansive outdoor living space. Natural light and warm neutral tones give these suites a feeling of relaxed elegance – perfect for longer stays or special occasions.

Also new for 2025 is the Rosa Marina Suite where the charm of times gone by combines with comfort. Featuring a double bed, two bathrooms (one with a whirlpool tub, the other with a shower) and a large private balcony overlooking the gardens. The living area includes a small kitchenette with a refrigerator, sink and dining table, perfect for families. Guests of the Rosa Marina Suite will also have exclusive access to a beach station (umbrella and two sun loungers), guaranteed in the first four rows.

Despite its 202 rooms, Ostuni a Mare feels like a peaceful retreat. At its heart are two swimming pools and a lagoonstyle children’s pool. The hotel’s modern fitness suite

overlooks the pool and is fitted with Technogym equipment, while outdoor activities include two tennis courts, two padel courts, a basketball court, and synthetic five-a-side football pitches, including one designed especially for children.

For golfers, the celebrated San Domenico Golf – Puglia’s largest 18-hole links course – is just 15 minutes away surrounded by olive groves and open sea views.

Ostuni a Mare is home to three restaurants, each offering a different way to experience Puglia’s culinary heritage.

At Il Pontile diners can enjoy freshly caught seafood to the soundtrack of lapping waves. For informal meals, Il Pergolato serves pizzas and traditional dishes beneath the dappled light of its vine-covered pergola, paired with wines from Italy’s finest producers. The buffet restaurant caters perfectly to families, with a diverse spread of antipasti, pasta, desserts, and everything in between.

Ostuni a Mare is a 15-minute drive from Ostuni, which is an Apulian region known for its whitewashed old town. Visitors love to wander the streets, admiring each and every corner –painted blue doors against white walls abundant with climbing bougainvillea, vespas scooting past tooting their horns, and locals going about their typical and authentic daily Italian life. The Corso Vittorio Emmanuel II viewpoint is considered the best viewpoint in all of Ostuni, and can be reached from the main square on foot in just fifteen minutes. A must-do when in the old town of Ostuni is to walk its city walls. Dating back to ancient times, the walls encircle the old town, and offer a unique perspective of the city’s architecture and landscape whilst also promising panoramic views of the white city and surrounding countryside.
