Deira International School were pleased to welcome students from 81 different nationalities and try our best to make everyone feel supported. We have many new ELL (English Language Learner) students who love to attend DIS. The ELL community at our school is a vibrant and diverse group of students who come from various cultural and linguistic backgrounds. These students are actively engaged in learning English as a second language through the support of their teachers and peers. The ELL community at our school provides a safe and welcoming environment for these students to learn and grow, and encourages them to share their unique experiences and perspectives with others. One of our Year 8 ELL students from Cuba is an expert chess player who competes in competitions all over the world. She recently attended the FIDE World School Chess Championships which was held in Rhodes, Greece. She came an incredible 4th after a marathon of nine rounds from students around the world. This Secondary Inclusion Department Science practical involved a small group of Y11 students leading a group of Y6 students to do the Flame Test chemistry practical Inclusion students all attend curriculum support lessons within the Inclusion Department. The Science curriculum support lessons for this group happen every week. The overwhelming response from both the Y6 and the Y11 students was that they loved the session and really thrive within the Inclusion Department with activities like this one. Within our alternative curriculum pupils particularly love supporting and helping with the younger children. Pupil ’s realised that they are really good at working outside the classroom and they have career options in the future. Enthusiastically, this young girl speaks to Primary staff when she leaves a session by in ‘S t time!’ or even remind here to help tomorrow !
