Spains continued support for decades of UNRWAs efforts through AECID to improve the living conditions of the Palestinianrefugeepopulation

Within Baqa'a camp, the largest refugee camp in Jordan, a series of specific initiatives have been carried out improving the living conditions of its residents: Creation of a green recreational area at the girls' school, providing a safe space for recreation, installation of a rainwater collection and storagesystemattheschoolitself,andacquisitionofgarbage collectionequipment,contributingtosolidwastemanagement inthecamp.
RENOVATION OF WATER INFRASTRUCTURE IN THE SOUTH OF JORDAN
Within the grant support provided from the Spanish Cooperation to the Jordan Water Authority - JWA in Jordan, the initiative to rehabilitate the water system in Al Lajoun (Karak) is making substantial progress
Improving the access to drinking water in Jordan is one of the priorities stated in the Jordan-Spain Strategic Framework 2020-2024 and this project, signed in 2022, is part of this contribution from the Spanish Cooperation.
The grant provided by AECID amounts to 1,5 million Euros and is currently cofinancing the rehabilitation of
Regarding the water distribution pipelines, the JWA has installed a supplying ductile, installed the new pipes between wells, air valves and washouts For the rehabilitation of the wells, the submersible pumps have been installed after running all technical works and tests, as well as all wells arrangement collection system in well chamber, including new equipment.
When it comes to the rehabilitation of the treatment plant, many different structures and parts have been rehabilitated or upgraded, including new equipment installed. The completion of the works currently stands between 60 and 80%.
The objective of this project is improving the access to drinking water to the residents in the southern governorates of Jordan, while improving the efficiency and effectiveness of service operations by the Jordan Water Authority.
EMERGENCY RESPONSE. WAR IN LEBANON
The intense conflict, between 8 October 2023 and 24 November 2024, caused thousands of casualties and injured among civilians, displaced at least 899,725 people within Lebanon. At the pick of the crises, 190,102 people were registered in 1,177 collective shelters and 3,316 were registered in 11 UNRWA emergency shelters UNHCR identified over 105,000 refugees who were secondarily displaced in Lebanon, while an estimated 562,000 people had left Lebanon to Syria fleeing from the hostilities. Some 25,000 migrants were also forced to flee their homes and workplaces (IOM).
The conflict, which impacted one in ten hospitals and killed more than 200 health workers while on duty, took a devastating toll on basic infrastructure and interrupted education for more than two million children
September to November 2024 witnessed most of the death toll and human suffering since the beginning of this war and was the period where AECID activated most of its emergency and lifesaving response to this crisis
Using different emergency mechanisms, AECID secured a total contribution of 2,87 MEUR responding
to the Flash Appeal released under the coordination of the UN system.
The main contribution targeted the emergency appeal of the International Federation of the Red Cross, with an activation of 1 MEUR, followed by the contribution to the Appeal launched by Internacional Committee of the Red Cross, with 0,5 MEUR. These were unearmarked contributions.
Then, 5 Spanish INGO activated their global emergency agreements with AECID, mobilizing an additional 0,97 MEUR for 6 different interventions.
AECID contributed financially to the Emergency Response Teams coordination effort provided by WHO and finally, an in-kind contribution containing essential medicines and medical supplies and worth 150 000 euros was handed over to the Lebanese Ministry of Public Health based on its international appeal for support
All these contributions are additional to the regular humanitarian and development funding that AECID committed to Lebanon in 2024
MASAR AL’AN PROGRAMMEAECID
Masar al’an is a programme recently launched by AECID with the aim of contributing to a threefold transition social, ecological and economic in Arab countries, in response to their economic, social and climate-related challenges, and particularly creation of jobs for young people; and to foster partnerships by enhancing regional cooperation and pursuing practical solutions based on innovative knowledge.

FUNDACIÓN LA LIGA
This project, launched in Jordan by the Sports Projects department of LALIGA and FUNDACIÓN LALIGA, in collaboration with AFDP Global (Association Football Development Programme), has been pursuing since 2018 the goal of using football as a tool to transmit the positive values of sport and empower refugees to improve their psychological well-being, resilience, and way of relating to others
At the beginning of 2025, the new edition of the project's football competition will begin, in which more than 300 boys and girls will participate, divided into 16 male teams and 12 female teams in the case of Za’atari; and 144 boys and girls divided into 8 male teams and 8 female teams in the tournament held in Azraq. All of them will be uniformed with the kits that the different LALIGA clubs have provided for this project to give color and a sense of belonging to the participating teams
Both in Za’atari and Azraq, the league will be divided into three categories based on the age of the players: under-18 and under-15 for the female teams, and under-13 for the male teams
In the sports aspect, the LALIGA Za’atari & Azraq Social Project has the invaluable collaboration of 90 adults who are part of the competition in the technical teams, as well as acting as referees and staff Many of them, trained in previous years within the project's training framework, are generating different job opportunities, as well as undeniable personal growth.
Additionally, for the development of this league, there is also support from various organizations that work
regularly on the ground, creating a very important collaborative network in these regions: Blumont, Questscope, UNICEF Makani, Norwegian Refugee Council, Lutheran World Federation, Save the Children & UEFA Foundation / AFDPG, World Vision, and Care International.
Parallel to the sports competition, both in Za’atari and Azraq, training courses for coaches and referees continue based on FUNDACIÓN LALIGA's own methodology 'Values to Win', expanding their knowledge in technical-tactical aspects of the game, training methodology, first aid, and values education. A series of contents that are of utmost necessity and practicality given the social context in the refugee community
