elcome to the last half of 2018! With some 150 odd days until Christmas the year is passing by quickly for many of us. For the Northern Gold Coast Locals, it seems every turn we take on the roads there are plenty of development sites and upgrades of shops, houses and facilities, this includes new schools that are very much needed in this area. The next 6 months will be an exciting time for the area with the long-awaited Westfield to open and roads being improved to some degree. In this edition we have included some history of the area with a “past and present” article. With progress comes some pain and our native animals are showing signs of stress with all that’s going on. As such we thought it timely to remind everyone with what we can do to assist them during this time and moving forward. The Coomera Conservation Group have kindly provided us with hints and tips on how we can help our Koalas of the region.

Local Living


Junction Farm • ‘Junction Farm’ was located just upstream from where the Coomera River flows into Southern Moreton Bay. There is a narrow passage between Coomera Island and the northern bank of the Coomera mainland and this is was the site of the farm. The Coomera River divides into two arms as it curves around Coomera Island – hence the name ‘Junction Farm’. A section of Hope Island is visible from the site of the farm. The surrounding area in 2005 was developed as is now known as Coomera Waters and Coomera. The Coleman Family still reside in the area. • Mains power did not reach the area until 1975, when power lines were extended to a golf course on a neighbouring property. Up until then, the family used a kerosene fridge, kerosene and later tilley lamps and for time generated their own power. Building materials were often salvaged and re-used. When the Upper Coomera School or Baker’s Creek School was closed, Bill Colman purchased the old school and re-erected it as a residence on his farm. It replaced the old residence built by James. When a neighbouring farm house was to be demolished, Bill acquired the house and removed it to his farm. Local Living

for koalas to cross, cars and dogs become a serious threat. These factors can also cause stress-induced sickness and increase rates of diseases like Chlamydia. The risk of dog attacks on koalas can be greatly reduced. All dogs should be kept on lead, it is an offence to have dogs off-leash in public areas. Over 4000 koalas are killed each year by cars and dogs. A single dog bite can seriously injure or kill a koala. Signs of a bite may not be outwardly visible, although there may be significant internal damage.

What should I do if I suspect koala is injured/sick or has encountered a dog? Look for signs of illness/injury: • Red, gunky or closed looking eyes • Wet or stained (rusty brown) rump • Poor body condition • Unusual behaviour (panting, sitting still on the ground) • Signs of trauma or injury (limp, blood, unusual limb position, facial differences) To confine an injured koala temporarily while waiting for a wildlife carer, place an upturned box or washing basket over the top of it.
