2020 South Shore Guide

PRIVATE ISLAND YURT FOR TWO

2020 South Shore Guide

PEGGY’S COVE Peggy’s Cove, the most photographed spot in Canada needs little description! Climb massive granite boulders to the iconic lighthouse and imagine 20,000 years ago when retreating glaciers moved those same boulders across this rugged landscape as if they were pebbles. A tiny harbour still shelters the fishing boats that have plied these rough seas for centuries. Reputedly named after the only survivor of a schooner that sank here in 1800, Peggy’s Cove and its iconic lighthouse offer one of Canada’s most extraordinary coastal seascapes. Explore the rocks with care, though, as the waves are dangerous. Experience the essence of Nova Scotia.

Peggy’s Cove Checklist Visit the deGarthe Art Gallery Shop for a one-of-a kind souvenir made by local artisans Hike one of the area’s scenic trails Espresso on the deck at Beales’ Bailiwick Taste Dee Dee’s Ice Cream Explore the Coastal Heritage Trail

It’s a 10-minute walk through this active fishing village but we suggest taking the day to step back in time and leisurely shop, snack, sightsee and experience the tranquil atmosphere of Peggy’s Cove. The best way to see Peggy’s Cove is to walk through the village from one end to the other, to experience the contrast between quiet fishing village at sunset and the breaking waves on the rocks. The parking lot on the road into the village provides interpretive plaques. This starting point places you within walking distance of the deGarthe Fisherman’s Monument and Gallery, the St. John’s Anglican Church, the Cove area with fishing boats and wharves, and then the lighthouse and rocks. 30 • novascotia.com/southshore

2020 South Shore Guide

Become a lobster chef in 12 minutes. If you haven’t eaten lobster in the worldfamous Peggy’s Cove, cooked the traditional way, then you haven’t really eaten lobster. Nova Scotia lobster is world-famous. And for good reason. We have some of the most fertile lobster fishing grounds, not just in Canada, but

in the world. But many people don’t know how to cook live lobsters. At Peggy’s Cove U-Cook Lobster, cooking and handling a live lobster is part of the fun of our unique process. We offer fresh locally-caught Atlantic lobster and explain the best cooking techniques for your meal that you then can enjoy or take-out. See peggyscovelobster.com.

Hidden Gem

Visit the William E. deGarthe Memorial Monument, a 30-metre rock face behind the renowned sculptor’s home that depicts the lives and legends of 30 local fishermen, plus their wives and children, which he chiseled from the wave-washed granite.

2020 South Shore Guide Shore Club Lobster Suppers

St. Margaret’s Bay to Lunenburg For centuries, the lives of residents along the coast from St. Margaret’s Bay to historic Old Town Lunenburg relied on the Atlantic seascape for their livelihood. These rich, windswept waters help us recall our shipbuilding heritage, while fishermen still nourish us with the finest seafood. These vocations shaped our culture as the waves sculpted a coastal landscape that’s unmatched in rugged beauty. Explore our sandy beaches and sheltered coves. Sail or kayak among the 365 islands dotting the twin basins of St. Margaret’s Bay and Mahone Bay, where seals bask in the sun. Visit our vibrant small towns and villages, where you’ll find chic boutiques, country markets, and art galleries galore. Join in the many fun-filled festivals and events staged throughout the year. Treat yourself to some succulent seafood at one of our nationally-acclaimed restaurants, then take an after-dinner stroll through the preserved 18th-century streets of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Recommended Scenic Drive The Coastal Heritage Trail, starting in the picturesque community of Terence Bay and extending to the village of Blandford, offers visitors a scenic route from the Head of St. Margaret’s Bay around the Aspotogan Peninsula. Following the bay’s many inlets, the winding coastal road is a museum without walls. You’ll pass villages and sites that highlight some of our most significant history and culture. Follow Route 333 and you will learn of shipwrecks, lighthouses, churches, old fishing villages, and their settlers. Hike or bike on a trail that once served as the main road across Nova Scotia. Walk or bike the rail bed once used by the Halifax South-Western Railway. See beaches and shore birds and towns full of that strong seaside spirit.

A Must Experience

Since 1832, LaHave has been connected to East LaHave, located on the opposite side of the LaHave river, via a cable ferry. In 1982, Brady E. Himmelman retired after 35 years of service, being the longest serving captain of LaHave ferries. In 2010, the LaHave Ferry II was replaced by a 14 car capacity ferry named in the honour of Brady E Himmelman. The Ferry is operated by The Province of Nova Scotia and costs $7 for a one-way ticket. The trip lasts about five minutes one way.

Kejimkujik National Park Seaside

2020 South Shore Guide Kejimkujik National Park and National Historic Site

GREENFIELD AND CALEDONIA Recommended Scenic Drive Take the Kejimkujik Scenic Drive (Route 8) from Liverpool to Annapolis Royal in late September through early October, and you’ll be rewarded with spectacular fall foliage. Stop mid-way through your journey and rent a canoe or hike and explore the beautiful Mersey River in Kejimkujik National Park and National Historic Site. The crimson maples, golden hemlocks, yellow aspens, and russet oaks, along with their reflections in lakes, rivers, and streams, will delight you. No trip through the bustling hamlet of Greenfield is complete without picking up a coconut cream pie from Stew’s Corner Convenience and Gas. They stock most everything you need for a week at the cabin, as Greenfield is the access point into the lake country of Molega and Ponhook—a maze of roads and paths allow walkers, runners, and 44 • novascotia.com/southshore

cyclists to discover probably the best lakes in Nova Scotia. You can also pick up tasty food from the Kespuwitk Eats ‘n’ Treats and Gas Bar, or if you are lucky to be travelling through in late July, check out the Annual Planked Salmon Supper hosted by the Greenfield and District Volunteer Fire Department. Caledonia has long been the gateway to the Tobeatic Wilderness Area, and now Kejimkujik National Park and National Historic Site, with a rich tradition of outdoor activity and adventure. For 2020, camping is limited at the Park whilst extensive renovations take place, but you can choose to camp at the new Gateway Campground, or choose a roof over your head at the Whitman Inn, Mersey River Chalets, or B&B Art of Germany. Stop in at the Hollow Log Café and ask about their Big Rig Challenge.

Past the majestic colonial houses of sea captains of old, sits historic Fort Point Lighthouse. Climb up and sound the hand-cranked foghorn. The rich history and culture are reflected in the area’s festivals, museums and performing arts venues. Couple that with endless opportunities for hiking, biking, paddling, and swimming— or simply enjoy a perfect beach day—and see why we say: Seek Nature’s Rewards!

Shelburne

SHELBURNE & AREA Shelburne has a deep multicultural history. Originally known as Port Roseway, Shelburne was once occupied by Mi’kmaq, Acadians, Blacks, and American Loyalists. In 1783, during the American Revolution, 3,000 Black Loyalists escaped to freedom in Shelburne, making Shelburne one of the largest cities in North America. Shelburne found its calling in the fishing and shipbuilding industry, but racial tensions forced the Black Loyalists to move to nearby Birchtown, making this land the world’s largest free African population outside of Africa, in the late 18th century. The Shelburne area provides unique experiences that are rich in culture and adventure while providing visitors with places to relax and unwind in a surrounding of historic treasures, wilderness, and beauty.
