The more things change

E

very time you visit Nova Scotia, things are a bit different, with offerings for visitors evolving as our province grows and diversifies.

But at the same time, the fabled Bluenose hospitality is as strong as ever, with communities around the province, from Atlantic Canada’s largest city to tiny fishing villages and farming hamlets, welcoming visitors as they have for centuries.

And today, visitors can have a richer experience than ever.

Nova Scotia is telling its cultural story more fully. Learn about the rich history and resilience of the Black community at the Africville Museum (page 6) in Halifax or the Mathieu Da Costa African Heritage Trail (page 7) in the Annapolis Valley. In Cape Breton, Eskasoni Cultural Journeys (page 6) immerses visitors in Mi’kmaw culture, as does the Membertou Mi’kmaq Medicine Walk (page 7), which includes a three-hour guided excursion.

2025 is the ideal year to learn more about our Acadian culture, which resisted government oppression and thrives today. From July 25-Aug.15, Festival Acadien de Clare (page 7) returns. It’s the world’s oldest Acadian festival (dating back to 1955), a community celebration of Acadian culture and heritage on the shores of St. Mary’s Bay. And many other touchstones you may recall from earlier visits continue to be must-sees, such as the iconic Halifax Citadel (page 10), the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia (page 11) and its huge collection of works by folk artist Maud Lewis, and the living history of, Port-Royal (page 24), and Fort Anne (page 26) national historic sites, where the earliest European settlers tried to carve out a life in the New World.

You’ll also notice shift in Nova Scotia’s culinary offerings. The old favourites like fish and chips, seafood chowder, and lobster rolls are still plentiful and justifiably popular but there are more opportunities for unique culinary adventures. Try East Coast flavours prepared with high-level artistic flair at Mystic (page 55) on the Halifax waterfront, enjoy a meal with ingredients fresh from the on-site farm at Lupin Dining & Pantry (page 54) in Musquodoboit Harbour, or have a true Maritime pub experience at the Red Shoe (page 55) in Mabou, owned by the famed Rankin Sisters singers.

Even the province’s sports scene has grown. Major-junior hockey’s Halifax Mooseheads (page 15) have long had their loyal fans through the winter, and now they share space at Scotiabank Centre with the Halifax Thunderbirds (page 15), the East Coast’s only professional lacrosse team. And in summer, there’s soccer action aplenty at the Wanderers Grounds near Halifax Citadel, as the men of Hfx Wanderers FC (page 15) represent the city in Canadian Premier League action, while the women of Halifax Tides FC (page 15) recently made their debut in the Northern Super League.

We could fill a book with examples of how the past and present are coming together for an exciting new Nova Scotia, but experience is the best teacher, so our final advice: Hit the road with an open heart and an open mind. Whether you’re visiting for a month or day tripping for an afternoon, our province is prepared to surprise and delight.

ova Scotia is a treasure trove of cultural experiences, each offering a unique glimpse into its rich heritage and vibrant communities.

Each of these destinations promises a memorable journey through Nova Scotia’s history and culture.

Africville Museum 5805 Africville Rd., Halifax Near the MacKay Bridge on the shores of Halifax Harbour is the Africville Museum. The museum is on the site of a thriving community Black Nova Scotians called home for a century, until the government expropriated their land and homes in the 1960s. Built and opened in 2011, the museum replicates the previously demolished Seaview African United Church. Exhibits share stories of the experiences of Africville residents, plus the community’s history.

On a 2.4-kilometre trail on Goat Island, you’ll find a unique experience while learning about Native culture.

Mi’kmaw cultural interpreters guide you through the woods. The island is on Bras d’Or Lake, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The Storied Island Trail Tour is a unique experience taking you through Goat Island Trail and on to Gaelic (Highland Village Museum) and French (Fortress of Louisbourg) destinations, all with significant historical roots in Nova Scotia.

Eskasoni Cultural Journeys offers an immersive experience.

Festival Acadien de Clare Clare The world’s oldest Acadian festival (dating back to 1955) returns for its 70th edition from July 26-Aug. 6, and Aug. 15, a community celebration of Acadian culture and heritage. Visitors flock to Baie Sainte-Marie for concerts, dinner theatre, and parades. New this year is the Festival Expo-Culturel, showcasing Acadian food and music, plus a trade show. The climax of this festival is Le Tintamarre on National Acadian Day (Aug. 15), a traditional noisy procession through the various communities of Clare, followed by a concert.

Mathieu Da Costa African Heritage Trail Annapolis Royal to Windsor Named after an African explorer and multilingual interpreter who travelled in Atlantic Canada with French and Dutch traders during the 17th century, this scenic trail shares the story of 400 years of Black Nova Scotian heritage.

Place of History and Memory linked to Enslavement and the Slave Trade

Along the trail, eight interpretive panels celebrate the contributions of people and communities, including the African Baptist United Church, Gibson Woods community, educator W.P. Oliver, and independent businesswoman Rose Porter.

Membertou Mi’kmaq Medicine Walk Membertou Starting at the Membertou Welcome Centre, the Medicine Walk is a threehour guided tour that immerses visitors in culture and tradition. One leg of the tour leads you to Greenlink Trail System, a place boasting traditional plants and medicines the Mi’kmaq have used for centuries. Drumming surrounds you, representing Earth’s heartbeat. There are dream-catching and bread-making (Luskinikn) workshops and a gift shop with cultural arts and crafts.

A homage to Viola Desmond, the Black civil-rights leader who fought for equality, this pedestrian-only street is adjacent to the site of the Roseland Theatre, where Desmond was arrested after refusing to give up her seat in the whites-only section in November 1946. At Viola’s Way, the artwork on the theatre’s exterior tells her story. There are also interpretive panels and a plaque commemorating the ongoing fight for equality in Nova Scotia.

tart your exploration on Halifax’s historic waterfront. It’s the heart of the city and the province. From Casino Nova Scotia and the Historic Properties to Bishops Landing, you’ll find dozens of shops, vendors, and dining options.

As you stroll, the first thing you’re likely to notice is Queen’s Marque, a recent waterfront development that marries present and past with contemporary and high-end dining and shopping.

Watch for the Tidal Beacon, a 20-metre art installation with an appearance changing as its lights rise and fall with the tides. Follow the boardwalk to its southern end, and you’ll come to Point

Pleasant Park, with its 39 kilometres of groomed woodland and seaside trails.

Want a faster pace? Try a rental from Segway Nova Scotia or I Heart Bikes. You’re also a short stroll from the Halifax Transit ferry to Dartmouth, which docks at Alderney Landing, home to summer festivals and events, plus a weekly market.

A mighty fortress

Back ashore, Halifax Citadel National Historic Site is the city’s best known and most popular landmark. Several forts have stood on the hilltop over the last 250 years, guarding the city.

The site has permanent exhibitions, special exhibits, period rooms, artillery, and fortifications. Tours include Citadel Adventures, a mystery game for kids ages nine to 15, and the Distilled Experiences tour for grownups, including a locally-made spirits tasting.

Aim! Fire! Experience or be a Soldier for a Day. Also on site, you’ll find the Army Museum, documenting Nova Scotia’s rich military heritage. Grounds open year-round; dates and times for exhibitions and experiences vary.

One of the city’s newest historic attractions sits on an island near the centre of Halifax Harbour. The recently opened Georges Island National Historic Site offers scenic views from a new perspective. This small island and its fortifications played a key, and at times dark, role in Canadian history, as a prison and internment camp for

expelled Acadian settlers. It’s only accessible by sea. Take the ferry (early June to mid-October) with Ambassatours Gray Line, charter a private boat, or rent a kayak.

Meet Maud

A couple blocks up the hill from the waterfront on Hollis Street, the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia is a must-visit for fans of acclaimed folk artist Maud Lewis.

The gallery hosts dozens of her works, plus the tiny house she lived and worked in for 30 years. There’s also a steady schedule of rotating guest exhibitions and works from the gallery’s permanent collection, including a spotlight of environmental and historic painter Alex Livingstone, continuing until Nov. 9.

The Halifax Transit ferry docks at Alderney Landing, which hosts the wildly popular Harbourside Ribfest from June 28-July 1, plus festivals and events throughout the year.

A few blocks inland, you’ll find the Dartmouth Heritage Museum (open year-round) at Evergreen House on Newcastle Street and Quaker House (open early June-late August) on Ochterloney Street.

If you’re venturing further afield, The Cat leaves most days between May and October at 9:30 a.m., and arrives in Bar Harbor at 3 p.m. local time. Advance bookings are recommended and you’ll need your passport to enter the U.S. Yarmouth showcases its diverse history in many fascinating museums. The Sweeney Fisheries Museum is a visitor favourite. It “contains seven reproduced buildings, an 18.5-metre replica coastal freighter, and a 30-metre wharf, which allows visitors to experience a historical waterfront from the 20th century,” says its website. Northeast of Yarmouth, via Hardscratch Road, is the Chebogue Meadows Wildlife Interpretive Trail, which over the course of a 1.5-hour hike winds through 12 habitats, including meadows, wetlands, and a black spruce swamp.

Next return to the coast and visit the Sandford Draw Bridge. Touted as the world’s smallest draw bridge, it spans a fishing boat channel near the eponymous community.

et, rural region draws few visitors, making it perhaps the perfect spot to slow down, stop and enjoy the beaches, and leave your everyday cares far behind.

The Evangeline Trail, named for a fictional young Acadian girl who lost her love Gabriel during the expulsion of the Acadians (immortalized in the poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow), leads you on to Smuggler’s Cove Provincial Park, an ideal place for a picnic lunch. Nearby on Aug. 6-9, the Clare Bluegrass Association celebrates the region’s musical heritage with its 23rd Annual Bluegrass Festival in the town of Meteghan. While there, grab a quick drive through-only lunch (11:30 a.m. 2 p.m. only) at Meteghan Râpure. The namesake râpure (rappie pie) is an Acadian potato casserole, the

region’s signature dish. Finally in Weymouth, Sissiboo Story Book Trail presents stories of the area’s five founding cultures, sharing tales of the Mi’kmaq, the Black Loyalists, the United Empire Loyalists, the New France settlers, and the Acadians.

Rolling in

Hundreds of cyclists will travel to Clare Sept. 13-14 for Gran Fondo Baie Sainte-Marie, the largest cycling event in Atlantic Canada. Experienced riders will take on the 128-kilometre Gran route, while intermediate and novice cyclists prefer the 67-kilometre Medio or 35-kilometre Piccolo rides. Participants rave about the breathtaking scenery, unforgettable Acadian hospitality, and delicious lobster meal at the end.

ake a trip through the Annapolis Valley, the land of orchards and tides, a 195-kilometre tour along the province’s Bay of Fundy coast from Mount Uniacke to Digby. Bring your appetite for farm-fresh fare and bountiful crops from rhubarb to apples, plus your thirst for the many wineries, breweries, and distilleries along the way.

Living history

The valley is so called because it is bordered by the North and South mountains, part of the Appalachian chain. The area has been home to the Indigenous Mi’kmaq for millennia. In the early 17th century, French settlers arrived on the shores of the Annapolis Basin and began the first settlement at the Habitation, today re-created at Port-Royal National Historic Site in Granville Ferry.

The Acadians spread out from there, claiming land from the ocean with ingenious sluiceways called aboiteaux,

many of which still exist. In 1755, the British governor ordered the Acadians expelled, an event known to this day as the Grand Derangement and memorialized at Grand-Pré National Historic Site, less than an hour’s drive northwest of Halifax.

he secret to exploring the South Shore is to get off of the highway and stick to the coastal roads.

Coastal treasures

Heading west from Halifax, your first stop should be the seaside village of Chester. Known as the gateway to the South Shore, the community offers fine dining, unique artisan shops, cycling and hiking routes, free music concerts at

the bandstand, and access to the Tancook Island Ferry. It’s near Graves Island Provincial Park, a camper’s delight, and home to the seasonal Chester Farmers’ and Artisan Market, seasonally open Fridays 9-12.

Take the curving and scenic Highway 3 down the road to Mahone Bay. Just past the little orange Visitor’s Information Centre, you’ll come to the three churches that are the centerpiece of the town’s skyline,

looking across the harbour to the colourful heritage buildings along the town waterfront. The area is home to many galleries, craft stores, and cafés. The Four Points Vintage Market in nearby Blockhouse hosts vendors selling quality antiques and collectibles. The Mahone Bay Music Association presents free summer concerts at the downtown gazebo Wednesday evenings from July to September.

Lunenburg is the home port of the historic Bluenose II schooner.

Continue along Highway 3, the Lighthouse Route, to Lunenburg, home of the Bluenose II sailing ship.

An afternoon on the water under the iconic schooner’s billowing sails is an essential part of any visit. Allow time to saunter downtown Lunenburg and visit the excellent bookstores Block Shop Books and Lunenburg Bound, both on Montague Street. This historic neighbourhood is also jammed with friendly little restaurants and boutiques, while Ironworks Distillery creates award-winning craft spirits nearby on Kempt Street.

In the stately red and white building on the hill overlooking the town, the Lunenburg Academy of Music Performance trains world-class musicians and presents intimate classical music concerts by performers from around the world. This year’s schedule includes the World Premieres Concert on June 21 (featuring works by emerging artists), Summer Jazz on July 26, and innovative guitar with the Roddy Ellias Eastern Trio on Oct. 25.

The roads less travelled

From Lunenburg you can travel south on Route 322 past Rose Bay and Riverport until you come to the LaHave River. Just past Parks Cove, you can board the tiny LaHave River Cable Ferry.

There’s no charge as the ferry carries a dozen or so cars at a time across the river. On the south bank, turn left to visit the LaHave River Bakery on Route 331. It’s a friendly gem with a cafe, bookshop, and local crafts.

bikes. Explore the island’s past at the Tancook Museum and find local art in the Wishing Stones Studio & Gallery, in the old general store building on the south side of the island. Ferry tickets are available at the dock in Chester; stormy weather can delay or cancel crossings.

Head north along the river and you’ll soon arrive in Bridgewater, the biggest town on the South Shore, and great place to stock up on essentials. From July 21-27, it hosts the South Shore Exhibition (AKA “the Big Ex”). Dating back to 1891, it’s the region’s largest and oldest agricultural fair, featuring 500 head of livestock, vendors, arts and crafts, 4-H exhibits, and a midway.

Or, travelling in the other direction, follow the Port Medway Road to Rosefinch Mercantile for tasty snacks, crafting, and if you’re lucky, the occasional Drag Brunches, one of the premiere LGBTQ events on the South Shore. Arrive early for a good seat.

Past and present

Passing through Brooklyn, the home of Olympian shot-putter Sarah Mitton, you’ll soon arrive in Liverpool. A small town with a thriving arts and culture scene, it’s the home of the Hank Snow Home Town Museum on Bristol Avenue, documenting the life and times of the music legend. In the heart of the downtown, the Astor Theatre on Main Street hosts films, concerts, and live theatre, plus regular art exhibitions showcasing local talents. After the show, pop into the Main and Mersey Restaurant for pastries and espresso.

The Quarterdeck Resort boasts a breathtaking seaside vista.

Continuing southwest, take side roads to the coast at St. Catherines River Beach or visit , the seaside portion of the inland national park, with winding trails along the dunes and coast. An important natural habitat for many species, this region also has two bird sanctuaries, Port Joli and Port Hebert, plus the Sacred Grove Ocean Sanctuary.

Reload and recharge

Shelburne is the next big town along the Atlantic shore, offering banks and shops of all sorts, every amenity a traveller might need.

On Water Street, you’ll find antiques, books, and several charming eateries, including the Emerald Light Kitchen + Bar, the Ship’s Galley Pub and Eatery, and the Teapot & Tankard Inn & Gallery — touted as “Shelburne’s couples’ getaway.”

If you’re there on Sunday, be sure to take in the Shelburne Guild Hall Market, open 12-3 pm from June to October.

Many local producers and artists set up shop, selling everything from crafts to local saffron.

Catch the wave

The South Shore has a strong surf community, with surfers on the Atlantic waves year-round. The Nova Scotia Web Cams site will show you current conditions at several beaches, and the Rossignol Surf Shop, near Summerville Beach Provincial Park, is the place to buy or rent equipment, get advice, or sign up for surf lessons.

The shop is close to White Point Beach Resort, a first-class resort with fine dining, a spa, a friendly pub, seaside cabins, and a long beach. It’s the ideal spot for a romantic escape. Also nearby is another seaside escape, the Quarterdeck Resort, a seaside haven since the 1930s and home to another outstanding restaurant, the simply named Grill.

Learning to Surf 4348 Lawrencetown Rd., East Lawrencetown From May 17-Oct. 14, try a surf lesson at Lawrencetown Beach Provincial Park. The high waves make this beach Atlantic Canada’s premier surf destination. If surfing isn’t your thing, the beach is also popular with swimmers. Be careful of the strong Atlantic currents; lifeguards are on duty in July and August. There’s also a quiet and well-groomed coastal trail.

That Dutchman’s Cheese Farm Animal & Nature Park, 4595 Rte. 2, Upper Economy When you enter, the farm feels like an oasis teeming with life — swans, ducks, turkeys, redfish, and tadpoles in the pond. Further down is a herb garden and a field where fowl roam.

Goats of all sizes frolic about; the baby ones are especially affectionate. Emus roost in their little huts feeding them seeds from the coin-operated machine is always entertaining. Pigs, cows, and rabbits sit along the path as peacocks keep an aloof distance. Animal lovers of any age can spend hours here.

Le Caveau 11611 Evangeline Trail, Grand Pré Intimate and inviting, just like the name promises, Le Caveau at Grand Pré Winery delivers excellent food under the skilled guidance of Chef Jason Lynch and his talented team, showcasing local ingredients. Opt for the four-course tasting menu for the chef’s inspiration of the day or try for the main menu with creative dishes like Nova Scotia Red Deer Civet with spätzle, braised red cabbage, pearl onions, and lardons. Add a Grand Pré wine, and epicureans will be satiated.

Luke’s Small Goods 2393 Agricola St., Halifax Looking to grab and go for a picnic? You won’t find a better sandwich in the city than Luke’s. The muffuletta will satisfy any foodie: mortadella, Genoa salami, Swiss cheese, olive salad, and vinaigrette on freshly baked sourdough. It’s a thing of beauty. Add the chips and pickle, plus a walnut and white chocolate cookie for later.

Chef and owner Kim McPherson offers an authentic farm-to-table experience in a rustic setting that’s a 45-minute drive east of Halifax. On the 16-hectare property, everything served is grown on-site or sourced locally, showcased in seven-course tastings. The relaxed atmosphere complements impeccable service and dishes like roasted cauliflower steak with a bold beet sauce, braised cabbage, wilted chard, or lobster with sunchoke purée. The menu evolves every few weeks, adding to the charm of this hidden gem.

A beautiful space, Mystic exudes an elevated Nova Scotian sense of place. Walls of glass show off the eye-level ocean views that form the perfect backdrop. The driftwood-inspired colour palette and sweeping curves of the ceiling, evoking a ship’s hull, anchor you in coastal beauty.

An open kitchen lets diners see the choreographed chef show and every intricate detail in preparing the set menu. They’re eight courses each, each plate a work of precision, emphasizing local produce. Whether it’s Nova Scotian saffron or Acadian caviar, it’s all dramatically beautiful.

It’s the kind of place where every night feels like a ceilidh. Warm, friendly, and charming — the quintessential Maritime pub. There’s always music playing, which is no surprise as the acclaimed Rankin Sister singers are the owners. Synch your visit with the Celtic Colours Festival (Oct. 10-18) when the pub hosts some of the island’s best performers. Try the Red Shoe meatloaf with a pint of Cereal Killer oatmeal stout from Big Spruce Brewing, and you’ll be doing the Cape Breton square set with the best of them.

Exposed brick walls and original five-metre ceilings set the cozy speakeasy vibe. Watch the open-plan kitchen and wood-burning rotisserie that Chef Zachary Blease feeds apple and birch wood to create the signature roasted chicken. Tasty in any iteration, but don’t skip the taquitos appetizer with chipotle sauce, chicken dripping mayo, burnt feta, and roasted corn. They also serve a mean rack of apple barbecue glazed ribs. Pair with the Acadian Honey Brown brew from nearby Annapolis Brewing. And as the name suggests, there’s a stellar whiskey menu. Spoil yourself with a wee dram of Nova Scotia’s own Glen Breton 10-year-old.

The South Shore Fish Shack 108 Montague St., Lunenburg Owned and operated by Martin and Sylvie Ruiz-Salvador, the husband-andwife team that operates a few other local hotspots, including Salt Shaker Inn & Deli and chic Beach Pea. The seasonal South Shore Fish Shack on the the Lunenburg waterfront features a small, high-quality menu of fresh seafood. Try the Mariner’s Mouthful of deep-fried clams, panko-crusted Adams & Knickle scallops, beer-battered haddock, hand-cut fries, and house-made tartar sauce. Grab a picnic table on the deck, order an icecold Lake City Cranberry Cider, and soak up the buzz of the busy harbour.

Stopping in for a pre-dinner brew or staying to eat, the Narrows offers an authentic feel and a love letter to the city of Halifax. It’s also where many of the city’s chefs like to eat after service, so you know it’s good. Explore the nooks, crannies, and paraphernalia in the beautifully restored Victorian home. Dinner includes an upscale take on Maritime fare like Solomon Gundy or classic boiled dinner, all with skill and finesse.

This is the place for a lobster roll that would make any Bluenoser happy. The classic lobster roll features chunks of fresh Atlantic lobster tossed with mayo, celery, green onions, and lemon juice, served with lettuce on a garlicky, buttered, toasted bun. Popular with locals and tourists, so be prepared to queue, but the service is good, and the line moves quickly. Find a colourful Adirondack chair in the sun with a view of the iconic Peggy’s Cove lighthouse and soak up that summer feeling.

Tucked away in tiny coastal village, Wild Caraway is a seasonal dining experience worth the trip. Husband-and-wife duo Sarah Griebel and Andrew Aitken own the restaurant, delivering exceptional food with loads of country charm. They focus on foraged and wild edibles: skill, imagination, and creativity collide in each dish. The yearly Foraging Dinner series is an unforgettable experience.
