Scammers target desperate renters

AFTER the region faces an even bigger squeeze on the rental market post-flood, scammers are increasingly targeting would-be renters on Facebook.

Appearing on Facebook Marketplace or local community groups and noticeboards, the scammers pose as landlords and advertise a local property (usually one that is as rare as hen’s teeth to come by).

When a prospective tenant expresses interest, they say they are located overseas or interstate and that you must conduct a transaction online to secure a rental agreement. Continued Page 8

Brophy re-elected as deputy

COUNCILLOR Anthony Brophy was re-elected as deputy mayor within Greater Shepparton City Council at an additional council meeting last Tuesday.

The position had remained vacant since an election was held in October 2022, which resulted in a hung vote due to the vacancy of former mayor, Kim O’Keeffe.

Now with a full panel of council members, Cr Andrew Brophy was elected against Cr Sam Spinks, in a vote of 5-4.

Mayor Shane Sali and councillors Brophy, Ben Ladson, Greg James and Geoff Dobson voted for Cr Brophy, while councillors Spinks, Dinny Adem, Fern Summer and Seema Abdullah voted for Cr Spinks.

Speaking to The Adviser after the vote, Cr Brophy said the past few months without someone in the deputy role has been challenging, but he felt honoured to go forward in the position and continue supporting the mayor and fellow councillors.

“I’m privileged to be able to help Mayor Sali, who has not been in the role that long. To be able to have that unified voice together, particularly on the big projects coming up will be so important, “The deputy mayor is very much a support role within the council. We need to make sure – and I’m using my political experience and negotiating skills and all that, to support Cr Sali in that particular

This is Cr Brophy’s second term as deputy mayor, having served in 2021/22. He will hold the position for the remainder of the

idea came from Shepparton, and it was Shepparton that progressed the business case supported by a few other councils,” said Ms O’Keeffe.

“We are proud to think that this idea will bring billions of dollars into regional Victoria, although we are disappointed that we did not get a sports village.”

Ms O’Keeffe said she is determined to ensure that the state government matches the $260M the Nationals committed to the Shepparton Bypass in the 2022 election campaign.

“On pre-poll, we witnessed a truck and car side swipe each other right in the front of the polling booth. We saw the impact of only one river crossing during the floods when the Peter Ross Edwards Causeway was flooded

and completely shut down causing complete chaos at an already stressful time.”

Ms O’Keeffe also said Victoria must address cost of living concerns, the housing crisis and homelessness, affordable housing, rental affordability, and housing availability.

“We must ensure that regional Victoria is also considered, and please we must consider looking at different ways to attract and increase the job workforce. Let’s look at some incentives.

“I urge investment into our region, including the final stage and the completion of Goulburn Valley Health redevelopment, and it was pleasing to hear today that the Labor Government are very supportive of doing that, and again the Shepparton Bypass,” Ms O’Keeffe said.

SPEAKING OUT... Member for Shepparton Kim O’Keeffe has addressed state parliament for the first time, speaking out on the need for regional investment and in particular, funding for some of Shepparton’s priority projects such as the Bypass and need for affordable housing.

In response, the

Broken CMA and Goulburn Murray Water have developed a program to assess and respond to the impacts of flooding in the Shepparton Irrigation Region.

Other proposed initiatives include the acceleration of new hybrid drainage projects and the inclusion of new areas for updated drainage schemes.

GMW and GB CMA staff will be on the ground over the next five months carrying out these works.

Hoon hotspots on patrol radar

IT’S a sound that grates, annoys and even wakes during the middle of the night, but despite police and community efforts to stamp it out, hoon driving is not only a noisy problem but a deadly one. Falling under the umbrella term, high-risk driving, Shepparton Highway Patrol sergeant Janne Kennedy said that police were continuing to take both a proactive and reactive approach towards combating reckless driving in the region.

With the Shepparton Police Station receiving a high volume of complaints, particularly on Friday and Saturday nights, sergeant Kennedy said that ‘hoon hotspots,’ such as Kialla Lakes were well known to police and received extra patrols consequently.

Nevertheless, despite police efforts to counteract high-risk driving, 111 offenders were processed by the courts last year in Greater Shepparton (the highest on record), resulting in vehicles being impounded and

licences being suspended.

Noting the higher frequency of reckless driving post Covid, sergeant Kennedy said, “The police can only work within legislation, sending offenders to court to curb behaviour.

“It is a community-based issue, and it requires police, the courts, Council and community members to work together in addressing the problem by building awareness about the consequences associated with road trauma.

“Programs such as the Cool Heads Road Safety aim to educate young and inexperienced drivers, as well as offenders, and is confronting, but effective,” sergeant Kennedy said.

To find out more about the Cool Heads Road Safety program, where parents and young drivers are welcome to attend, head to www.greatershepparton.com. au/community/safety-and-wellbeing/ community-safety/cool-heads.

Outwit the nit

bags, crisp uniforms and new shoes mark the beginning of a fresh school year, but as students happily head off to school, an obstinate, irritating little pest is often waiting in the wings.

Unfortunately, classrooms are the perfect environment for head lice to proliferate and with children commonly at work or play with their heads close together, lice can easily crawl from one host to another.

Master of Pharmacy Student, Connie McClelland

The first sign that your child may have head lice is constant itching and scratching, especially around the back of the neck and behind the ears.

When you look closely at your child’s hair, you might see small, oval-shaped, white or brown-black nits (eggs) attached to the root of the hair, near the scalp. You might also catch a glimpse of fast-moving lice.

With many products available to rid lice, Master of Pharmacy Student, Connie McClelland said treatments with the medicated ingredient, malathion, were the most effective.

Undertaking a placement at Reid’s Pharmacy, Connie said that while natural solutions were also available, remembering to repeat treatment seven days after the first, was key to ensuring complete removal as well as washing your child’s pillowcase in hot water.

Following each treatment, a fine toothcomb is essential for getting the nits out of the hair and can be purchased at any pharmacy.

Dispelling the myth that head lice only like clean hair, Connie said, “Lice don’t discriminate and will crawl into anyone’s hair no matter what their age or how clean their hair is.”

Crumbling country roads

IN THE first sitting week of parliament, State Member for Northern Victoria Wendy Lovell has blasted the State Government on the poor condition of roads in regional Victoria.

Addressing the new Minister for Roads and Road Safety, Melissa Horne, Ms Lovell described the condition of Victoria’s regional road network as “deplorable” and blamed chronic underinvestment in road maintenance.

Ms Lovell said that the Andrews Government had never prioritised the maintenance and safety of regional roads, evidenced by scrapping of the State Coalition’s ‘Country Roads and Bridges Program’ in 2014. The program provided $160M to 40 small regional councils and shires to maintain and repair local roads.

In her contribution, Ms Lovell highlighted the dangerous condition of the Katamatite-Nathalia Rd, which has a large pothole on a sweeping bend, causing some drivers to

cross onto the wrong side of the road. Like many others, the pothole has been filled several times with premix, which begins to break up with the first vehicle to cross it.

“Road users must ensure their cars are roadworthy but sadly our roads are not roadworthy because of the chronic lack of funding from the Andrews Government since their election in 2014,” said Ms Lovell.

“The practice of not repairing potholes properly has led to sections of roads in my electorate being extremely dangerous and I call on the Minister to articulate her plan and provide the substantial funding required to fix regional Victoria’s deplorable road network.”She requested Minister Horne to unveil her plan to fix regional roads and match or better the Coalition’s election commitment of at least $1B a year for the next 10 years to complete the intensive maintenance program required.

FANTASTIC PERFORMANCE BY

LOCAL TALENTS

Dear Sir,

On Saturday, January 28, along with two friends, I attended the evening performance of the Initial Stages Summer Workshop production of Xanadu Jnr.

Huge congratulations to everyone involved in staging the show. The singing and acting talent shown by these young people is amazing and it was obvious they were thoroughly enjoying their time to shine. They must have worked incredibly hard to stage such a brilliant production in such short time.

Congratulations must also go to Helen Janke, their director and mentor, who has nurtured their talent over many years with dedication and commitment.

Well done everyone, a great night’s entertainment.

Yours truly,

GRATEFUL AWARD RECIPIENT

Dear Editor,

We are writing to you and The Adviser to say a big thank you on behalf of Kai, our son, for receiving such an amazing helmet after a winning prize in your recent RoadSafe GV kid’s colouring competition.

As parents, we believe that this is such a great initiative and a very positive message being send out to all children and their parents in our local communities that brings awareness around road safety.

By investing in a helmet and appropriately wearing a protective head covering while riding, possibly a trike or

a bike, it is necessary to always remember that helmets play a very important role and they do support and protect a very precious part of the body – our head!

So, thank you again and all the best from our family to yours!

Warm regards,

BASIN PLAN POLITICAL CON OR SOUND WATER POLICY?

To the Editor,

In 2018, following considerable agitation from communities in southern NSW and northern Victoria, Federal and State Water Ministers agreed to what was termed the ‘Neutrality Test.’

In effect, it was a way to ensure the considerable social and economic damage caused over the previous decade by water buybacks was never repeated.

Under the ‘Neutrality Test,’ there are specific criteria to be applied for any projects to recover water under the 450 gigalitres of ‘upwater,’ as part of the Murray-Darling Basin Plan. These criteria are designed to ensure no regional community is ‘worse off’ in economic and social terms.

In other words, we were told this would protect rural communities and avoid a repeat of the significant employment loss in irrigation dependent towns and regions from previous water recovery.

We are about to witness the test for this ‘Neutrality Test’, and we will learn whether it was just another Basin Plan political con, or a genuine attempt to protect the social and economic fabric of our communities.

When Water Ministers meet later this month, there is little doubt the Federal Water Minister Tanya Plibersek will put devastating water buybacks on the table. While this is a great shame, because they are not only damaging but also unnecessary, buybacks are politically expedient.

The question is: Will the State Water Ministers hold firm and protect their farming communities, or will they bow to the pressure (and maybe $$$ that will be a sweetener)?

We live in hope that the true intent of the Neutrality Test is upheld, but perhaps can be forgiven for being more than a little sceptical.

Yours faithfully,

Partnering to ease the pain felt by physiotherapists

SHEPPARTON’S Fix Movement

Performance and Bendigo’s 3D Physio & Pilates have joined forces to provide emerging physiotherapists with varied experiences and structured mentoring to support and nurture their development and reduce the number of young professionals leaving the industry.

“Julie and I have known each other for a long time, and we identified a need to collaborate to give new graduates a taste for working across regional areas and to help them to thrive,” explained Fix MP owner, Cher Hetherington.

“When I started out, I was learning in a room by myself. I know how valuable an experience like this would have been. Understanding some of the challenges facing the industry, we partnered to have a crack at improving a widespread regional physiotherapy workforce shortage.”

“Through the program, graduates gain a variety of input and multi-disciplined disciplinary experiences, which is exciting for them and should help retain professionals while improving local services,” said Julie Sheahan, owner of 3D Physio & Pilates and physiotherapist with

Rebuilding the backbone of the Italian community

continued from front page

PRIOR to Covid, the SISC had over 100 members and was just getting back on its feet went the devastating 2022 floods swept in and destroyed the interior of the club building.

Situated on the edge of the Goulburn River in Marungi Street, flood waters reached 1.8 meters inside the club and did not recede for four weeks.

The club lost everything, including a dance floor, bar,

cool room, bocce courts and a large kitchen capable of catering up to 300 people.

With no club space and no member generated income, the SISC will sadly be unable to present their Italian Festa for a third year running, but club committee members Vince Tassoni and Vince Sagoleo want the Greater Shepparton Community to know, “We are going to rebuild the club and it is going to be bigger and better than ever.

“The City Council deserves a pat-on-the-back for its assistance and although tradies are hard to get at

the moment, the rebuild will hopefully see the facilities extended and although we can’t have the Festa this year, we will be having it again in April 2024 when the backbone of our community is rebuilt,” Vince Tassoni said.

If you would like to support the historic and stalwart community club in its rebuild, please follow the link, www.gofundme.com/f/shepparton-italian-social-club-incfunction-room to make your donation.

$150,000 to fund stronger communities

COMMUNITY groups and local governments can now submit their Expressions of Interest (EoI) for Round 8 of the Stronger Communities Program.

Grants of up to $20,000 are available for small capital projects that deliver social benefits. Sam Birrell MP urges groups to submit their EoI applications that will support infrastructure and equipment projects that would benefit the wider community.

“The Stronger Communities Program is a fantastic opportunity to help get grass roots community projects off the ground, as well as much needed upgrades,” Mr Birrell said.

“A wide variety of groups have benefited from previous rounds of this program, which includes Tongala Development Group, Kyabram Youth Club and Rushworth Cricket Club.”

Up to 20 projects will be chosen to share in $150,000 which has been allocated to

Nicholls.

Mr Birrell said Round 8 aims to support communities to recover from the impact of recent weather events and current economic pressures.

“Investment in our region is needed more than ever to help our towns bounce back from recent flooding as well as drive economic growth during these tough times,”

Mr Birrell said.

“These cash injections will allow groups to go ahead with much needed upgrades or buy equipment which will have lasting social benefits to residents for generations to come.”

• For this round, grant funding is up to 100 percent of eligible project costs except for local governing bodies (councils, authorities) where grant funding will be up to 50 percent of eligible project costs

• Minimum grant amount is $2,500 while the maximum is $20,000

STRENGTH IN COMMUNITY... Scammers target desperate renters

continued from front page

SCAMMERS in some cases provide real photos, genuine addresses of properties, land title deeds and even scans of stolen passports. They steal funds by asking for a month’s bond and rent to secure the property. If you pay by money transfer, there is extraordinarily little chance of recovering your money.

They may also ask for personal details such as bank and credit card numbers and driver’s licence details, which they use for credit card and identity fraud.

A dead giveaway for these posts is copy and pasted information within the post that may not even match up

with the actual property, eg, how many car spaces. Other common signs of suspicious posts are vague messages, low prices, a lack of photos, and no contact information.

While Facebook administrators do their best to filter through and reject these posts, it’s ultimately up to the public to remain vigilant and work to secure a rental property through the usual channels.

Sport and competing are no stranger to me, as I was an Elite Athlete Scholarship holder for my tennis at the University of Melbourne, competing in two University Nationals winning gold and silver. I apply the same drive I have for sport to all my clients to help them achieve success.

I am excited to be moving back home to Bendigo, after spending time in Melbourne for my studies. Outside of the clinic I enjoy almost all sports, with a particular love for tennis. I play and coach tennis and I also string racquets as a side hustle!

My areas of interest are:

• Sporting & musculoskeletal conditions

Building LGBTIQ+ regional leadership

APPLICATIONS are now open for the 2023 LGBTIQ+ Leadership Program – which, for the first time, will be tailored to regional and rural participants, allowing leaders to develop their skills and build their networks to address the unique experiences and needs of LGBTIQ+ communities in the regions.

The Leadership Program will support at least 25 leaders from across the regions to develop their expertise in a safe and supportive environment that will address their unique experiences and needs.

Grants are also open for LGBTIQ+ organisations and groups across Victoria to strengthen their operations, with $700,000 of LGBTIQ+ Organisational Development Grants on offer to support groups’

sustainability, develop inclusive practices, and strengthen their engagement with diverse LGBTIQ+ communities.

Grants of up to $25,000 are available for new or emerging LGBTIQ+ groups, and up to $50,000 available for long-established LGBTIQ+ organisations. This year’s program will prioritise activities and groups supporting LGBTIQ+ multicultural and First Nations communities, people with disability and regional rainbow communities.

Minister for Equality, Harriet Shing, said of the grants and program, “We’re determined to continue our support for LGBTIQ+ leaders and organisations right across Victoria. We are a state that is recognised around the world for LGBTIQ+

Walking on sunshine

IN a bid to raise dementia awareness, well over 100 people joined Mick Simpson on Mick’s Memory Walk around Victoria Lake Park on Sunday.

“What a great turnout we had on Sunday. It was wonderful to see people out there, walking in the name of awareness of this somewhat invisible condition. It can be an incredibly isolating diagnosis to face, but with social support, and the right community, it doesn’t have to be a path people forge on their own,” said Mick.

Dementia Advocate and the walk’s namesake, Mick Simpson, received this year's Kyabram citizen of the year and Campaspe citizen of the year awards. Mick’s determination to reduce the stigma,

and support others with dementia and their carers, is a testament to his passion that those living with dementia need not let their diagnosis define them.

Dementia is a disease that does not discriminate, it takes away the memories and shared experiences that help us connect with each other, but people living with dementia can still lead socially rich and fulfilling lives.

Given it affects so many people across our nation, it’s time to get the conversation flowing and remove the stigma facing such a diagnosis can incite. For information about a localised dementia support group, call KCLC on 5852 0000 or email kclc@kclc.com.au.

All newcomers are welcome with the group meeting on the last Thursday each month at 1pm.

APPLICATIONS ARE NOW OPEN... for the 2023 LGBTIQ+ Leadership Program, tailored for the first time to regional and rural participants. Grants are also open for LGBTIQ organisations and groups to develop and strengthen both their practice and community engagement. Picture: Supplied

A year of incredible art announced at SAM

Sam BIRRELL MP FEDERAL MEMBER FOR NICHOLLS

Stronger Communities Program

Grants of up to $20,000 are now available for community organisations and local governments to apply for as part of Round 8 of the Stronger Communities Program. The program will fund small capital projects that deliver social benefits for local communities across Nicholls.

$150,000 is available for groups in our region, and this is a great opportunity to help grass roots organisations bounce back from recent flooding as well as drive economic growth during these tough times. I encourage community leaders and local governments to fill in an Expression Of Interest application that can be requested via my email - sam. birrell.mp@aph.gov.au or by picking up a form from my office at 426 Wyndham Street Shepparton. Applications close March 14th. The total cost of projects must not exceed $50,000 and works need to be complete by the end of the year.

Back in the Nation’s Capital

THE Shepparton Art Museum (SAM) has 17 extraordinary exhibitions on the way in 2023, promising to engage, delight, and challenge patrons while making connections with local stories and histories. Celebrating Australian talent, SAM’s next major exhibition will focus on the practice of Melbourne-based contemporary, artist, Ash Keating.

Elevation opens March 18 and will feature a series of large-scale paintings by Keating that atmospherically capture the natural environment through running, dripping paint, while responding to the local landscape.

Opening simultaneously, will be SAM’s new collection show, exquisitely titled, Dance Me to the End of Love , which will take visitors on a journey from birth to death, while reprising the smash-hit sculpture, Woman and Child by Sam Jinks.

In July, SAM will present Ngaylu Nyganganyi Ngura Winki (I Can See All Those Places) by Kunmanara Carroll.

This solo exhibition will explore Carroll’s influence and practice, examining

the legacy of cultural knowledge which he has sought to preserve through his paintings and ceramic sculptures.

An exhibition of selected works from the collection of Matthias Arndt, director of Arndt Art Agency, will show in November, while the Children’s Gallery will come alive with the colourful, geometric work of Melbourne artist, Beci Orpin in October, following a SAM collection show in May.

Three Hares will enliven ceramic showcases across the museum from late February, blending SAM collection pieces with contemporary works including those of guest curator, Adam John Cullen.

Celebrating local talent, Fresh: GV Top Art & Design 2022 also opens in February, featuring the work of VCE students, while the spotlight will continue to shine on local creatives this year, with open call outs SAM Open, SAM EOI and SAM Spotlight.

For more information about SAM’s 2023 exhibition program visit, www. sheppartonartmuseum.com.au/whats-on/ upcoming/

Parliament has returned for 2023 and I have spent the past two weeks pressing the government for action on a number of issues critical to the people of Nicholls. I’ve had several speaking opportunities in the House which included calling on the Government to help protect local orchards future crops from severe weather events by reintroducing the Horticulture Netting Program. The GV Rural Clinical Health School was also back on my agenda. This project urgently needs funding to ensure more nurses and allied health professionals can be trained locally to fill the gaps in our health system for generations to come.

I spoke about regional arts and the need for the new National Cultural Policy to focus on regional areas. Bringing the arts to regional areas not only stimulate local economies but also provide important social connections. In question time I pressured the Prime Minister to answer what his government was doing to ease the cost of energy prices for businesses who are facing sky rocketing bills in Nicholls.

A number of meetings were also held with Ministers and Shadow Ministers to advocate for issues facing our region.

Funding for Nicholls

2023 is off to a fantastic start for our region, having secured millions of dollars in Federal Government funding for projects across Nicholls. $2.3 million has been allocated for upgrades to the Echuca Aerodrome. This money will fund much needed upgrades including the installation of a patient transfer station and dedicated aeromedical helipad. The funding program previously introduced by the Coalition Government will ensure Echuca and nearby towns are equipped to cater for the urgent health and emergency needs of their residents. Tallygaroopna Football and Netball Club and Tatura Civic Halls Committee will each receive $10,000 from the Strengthening Rural Communities Program. Tallygaroopna will use the money to put towards seating while Tatura will replace the floors of the hall. Both of these projects aim to reconnect the community by providing up to date community spaces.

Tell us about your ‘not-for-profit’ community events via email at classifieds@sheppartonadviser.com.au (information is required at least 2 weeks before an event). Please note listings are to be fewer than 55 words.

How’s your financial wellness?

WE all know that exercise and a nutritious diet are important for our physical wellness. But what about our financial wellness –what is it and how do we achieve it? Financial wellness is a state of good financial health, where you have enough money to meet your needs now, and will have enough to meet your needs in the future too. Safe to say, most of us want that.

The current cost-of-living pressures might mean your household finances are being stretched, but taking the time to sit down and crunch the numbers often creeps down the ‘to-do list’. Sometimes we’re not sure where to start, and it can seem pretty challenging.

“It’s understandable to put off thinking about your finances to another day – life gets so busy! But not keeping a close eye on your financial wellbeing has a cost – to your peace of mind, and ultimately to your wallet,” said Amber Nicholas, GMCU team member since 2018 and more recently, team leader at the Shepparton branch.

The question of how to achieve financial wellness isn’t as daunting as you

might think, nor is it about high-flying investments or expensive advice. It can be preparing a household budget you think can stick to. It might be consolidating your debts (rolling them into one, that charges lower interest). Or it could be saving a bit of money – however small – from each pay.

The key is to get started. It doesn’t matter whether you’re a member of GMCU or not, Amber and any of her team are more than happy to have a chat about what financial wellness looks like for you – free of charge.

“We’re open to everyone here. It’s all about unleashing what’s possible in our communities and making a positive difference,” said Amber.

“If you’re wondering where to begin with budgeting, or have questions about your financial goals, pop in and have a chat. There’s no obligation, and you never know, you might learn something!”

Drop in and chat to Amber or one of her team at GMCU Shepparton, and start flexing those financial muscles, or visit www.gmcu.com.au for further information.

Positive Ageing Strategy consultation now open

COUNCIL is seeking feedback to help shape the Positive Ageing Strategy 2023-27. The Positive Ageing Committee and Council are committed to supporting the ageing population and values contributions from the community and partners to help inform the strategy.

Councillor representative on the Positive Ageing Committee, Cr Seema Abdullah, said, “Nearly 40 percent of our population are aged over 60, with an increase since 2016.”

“The pandemic and floods have highlighted the importance of keeping everyone including our ageing

community connected. We would like to hear about ideas and priorities for Council to focus on from the community,” she said.

Consultation is open to all community members.

Feedback can be provided online via the Shaping Greater Shepparton website, in person at one of Council’s drop-in sessions, or by calling Council. Consultation will close on Thursday, March 15 at 5pm.

Public consultation drop-in sessions:

• Monday, February 20, 5.30-7.30pm at the Mooroopna Education and Activity Centre (MEAC)

• Tuesday, February 21, 1-3pm at MEAC, Mooroopna

• Tuesday, February 21, 5.30-7.30pm, at The Shepparton

Senior Citizens Centre

• Thursday, February 23, 11am-1pm at The Shepparton

Senior Citizens Centre

• Friday, March 3, 10-11am, online session.

To provide feedback or find out more ways to have your say, head over to the Shaping Greater Shepp website shepp. city/positive-ageing-strategy

The Griffith Pioneer Park Museum ‘Action Day,’ also on Good Friday, will have fun kid's activities, market stalls, vintage machinery, demonstrations, and entertainment, along with food and beverages.

Easter Saturday morning, Griffith’s main street will be brimmed with sales to shop a bargain at the Banna Avenue Sidewalk Sale. Saturday afternoon, the most popular event is the Griffith Vintage Festival, featuring live music and an array of local wine and food to enjoy.

Returning Saturday is Blood, Sweat & Beers, Griffith's first homebrew competition

and independent craft beer festival. It is run by Grainmother Brewing Supplies in the Griffith Community Gardens and was an enormous success in 2022.

Easter Sunday will be all about wonderful wine and food. For instance, at Piccolo Family Farm you can explore producer and artisan market stalls, enjoy delicious coffee, sample incredible food and be entertained by live music. You can also catch a glimpse of their new Visitor Experience Centre and cellar door. That's just one example. You'll be spoilt for choice over the weekend with a winery event or tasting experience at many of Griffith's renown cellar doors.

It is recommended that you book your tickets early to ensure you don’t miss out on these fantastic events.

Spend an evening with Merv Hughes

IN celebration of their newly revamped home at Vibert Reserve, the Karramomus Cricket Club are pleased to present a special fund raising event on Saturday, March 4 with non-other than cricket legend, Merv Hughes.

One of Australia’s most feared fast bowlers, the infamously moustachioed cricketer will auction a selection of signed sports memorabilia on the night, with all proceeds going to the club for new equipment upgrades and replacements.

Having utilised a shipping container for club space while the pavilion at Vibert Reserve was being redeveloped, club president Nathan Delahey said the fund raiser would mark a thrilling return to the club’s social priorities.

“Such a big part of our sporting club is about the social side and although we’ve managed to catch up a few times at other venues during the redevelopment, the Merv Hughes

event will mark a return to what we really enjoy as a community.

“We’re looking forward to welcoming Merv to Karra and being entertained by his stories... and to hear his thoughts on current cricketing issues. What better way to hold our first official event than with the legend, Merv Hughes!” Nathan said.

Beginning at 7pm, the Merv Hughes auction is open to one and all, with tickets $150 per person which includes food and drinks (for three hours).

Back on court for 2023

YOUNG players relished being back on court when Kyabram Youth Club’s Summer Basketball competition resumed last Monday. There were no more excited players than Indi Kent and Mason Davis who were the top scorers across all grades for the night. Mason shot 30 points for Hornets in the Prep-1 boys division, and Indi also had a 30-game in the girls Grade Prep-4 division for Gators.

Other leading scorers across the grades were:

• Prep/1 - Nate Carmody (26), Hunter Bergman (12), Oliver Edwards (8), Joshua Ciavarella (6), Aiden Dennis (6)

• Grade 2/3/4 - Benny Barnes (21), Wes Smith (14), Alex Yaragin (12), Ryan Carmody (8), Ryder Morris (6)

• Girls Prep-4 - April Wilson (18), Charli Simm (8)

• Ben Chapman, Sam Bruhn and Cyhril

Cullinan were top scorers in the boys Grade 6/Year 7/8 division.

A great compliment was paid to one of the competition’s young referees Selina O’Brien who was noted on a scoresheet that she was “fantastic at explaining to kids their fouls.

Great work!”

Kyabram Youth Club is bringing basketball back to its community. Basketball was lost when the town’s basketball association ceased to exist about 20 years ago. The Club’s aim is to give Kyabram and district basketball enthusiasts an opportunity to play organised competitions and games in their own town again.

Adults play Sunday afternoons at 4pm and 5pm, and primary and secondary aged girls and boys play on Mondays from 3.307.30pm. A pre-school learn-to-play for boys and girls is also on Monday evenings.

With the event capped at 80 guests, you can call Nathan on 0438 418 148 for more information and/or visit www. trybooking.com/1012296 to book tickets.

The pavilion, home of Karramomus Cricket Club, is at Vibert Reserve, Archer Street, Shepparton.

Croquet workshops a smash hit

DESPITE being flooded in October and being unable to use their clubrooms at present time, Mooroopna Croquet Club is showing just how popular it is, attracting around 40 new members so far this year.

On Monday, croquet players from clubs in Albury, Shepparton, Mooroopna, Numurkah, Rich River, Deniliquin and Euroa gathered at Mooroopna for a demonstration of association croquet by former Australian title holder, Kenn Boal.

Association croquet is the traditional version of the game, it is a challenging and intriguing sport requiring tactical ability, judgment and skill rather than strength and fast reflexes. More than 20 players came out for the workshop, with many keen to further their skills in the sport.

Compared with association croquet, golf croquet has simpler rules and is more interactive, but it requires a similar level of

accuracy and tactical awareness.

Association croquet is held Wednesday night and Saturday mornings at Mooroopna, and golf croquet is played on Monday mornings and evenings, and Thursday afternoons.

Portable buildings have been provided to Mooroopna Croquet Club, who meet at the facility on Echuca Road. Club secretary, Helen Wrest, said they are very thankful to Council for their assistance during the floods and clean up.

“Our rooms were flooded back in October and the carpet and furnishings have all been removed. The council has

been wonderful. The rooms need to be assessed and asbestos removed still but we’re very thankful for the support,” said Helen.
