RESULTS | NOT PROMISES

The recent floods have had such a devastating impact on our community it sometimes feels inappropriate to talk about politics. So many Shepparton District people have been seriously flood-affected, and unfortunately the problems have not receded with the water.

People are still feeling the effects of isolation from loved ones and essential services, of property damage and loss of earnings.

The worst may be behind us, but now the clean-up has started, the recovery ahead of us can seem daunting.

I feel it is now more important than ever to keep Shepparton District a marginal seat and to use those networks that have been built up during the past eight years to keep funding and support flowing into our region.

People ask Peter and myself why I am standing again for another four years, and I always reply there is so much more to be done.

We are now faced with major flood recovery, health issues, an urgent need for more housing and the need for a second river crossing has never been more important.

We need greater investment in health infrastructure and we must ensure future funding streams reach into Mooroopna including addressing the upgrading of Westside Performing Arts Centre and find a future for the vacant secondary school site and more housing. Right now, we need to pick ourselves up and keep going. I think the first thing we need to do is look after our mental health.

If you feel you need support it is available through the Flood Recovery Hotline on 1800 560 760. Emergency financial assistance is also available through the same hotline, which is open from 7.30am to 7.30pm every day.

Please know my door is always open, so call my office on 5831 6944, or pop in to our office at 5 Vaughan St, Shepparton and we will help in any way we can.

Let’s keep the money flowing into our communities by keeping Shepparton District proudly independent.

WE STAND WITH

ACHIEVEMENTS

As an independent member of parliament I do not rely on a large party machine for funding, advice or ideas.

The community I represent is my party.

After two terms as the Independent Member for Shepparton District, I am very proud of what we have achieved together as a community.

Here are the highlights:

$1 billion for the Shepparton train line and VLocity trains.

$229 million for the redevelopment of Goulburn Valley Health.

$163 million to build a new mental health facility.

$140.5 million for the Shepparton Education Plan, including the new Greater Shepparton Secondary College.

LOOKING FORWARD

$45 million for social housing.

$25 million to build an early parenting centre.

$24 million for the redevelopment and relocation of Verney Road School to the former Wanganui school site.

$23 million for the Munarra Centre for Regional Excellence.

We have come a long way as a community over the past eight years, but we have more to look forward to, and there is more to be done.

Let’s keep the momentum going and work together to achieve even greater things for a proudly independent Shepparton District. We must continue to work together for the future economic development and wellbeing of our community.

My vision for the next four years includes:

Flood recovery

As your local member, it has been a privilege to have had direct access to government during the recent devastating floods. I plan to keep working with the State Government and relief agencies to secure proper funding and ongoing support for those affected by floods in the area.

Health

Workforce shortage is our major challenge. To address this I am calling for the government to continue the redevelopment of Goulburn Valley Health focusing on the multi-level carpark for staff safety and convenience and a clinical health school to train more nurses and allied health professionals.

Social housing

Two years ago, I welcomed the State Government’s commitment to a guaranteed minimum investment of $45 million to build at least 150 new social housing homes in our district. Those figures now need to be revised in the wake of the damaging floods. I will work with state and federal governments and local business leaders to maximise the number of social housing homes.

Bypass

The floods have exposed the need for a second river crossing as a priority project. I will be pushing hard for serious attention to be given to repairing and upgrading our roads.

And I want the government to hold contractors who do this work accountable for its quality.

Public transport

As our population continues to grow, bus services in our district are severely inadequate, particularly between Kialla, Mooroopna and Shepparton. The network has had no substantial update since 2009. In September I asked for an extensive review of our bus services and I will be following this up urgently with the next government.

Agriculture and environment

The need for food security has never been more important than now.

We need a strong voice to prevent further damage

from water buybacks on our farming community. At the same time, we need to increase our renewable energies while preserving our prime agricultural land for irrigated farming.

Education

Our State secondary school students now have state-of the-art facilities thanks to a $140.5 million State Government investment.

The Shepparton Education Plan sets out the community’s way forward and has to be implemented without delay. Presently in Australia we have the lowest unemployment rate ever and we need to ensure that every student in the Shepparton District has a pathway to a career of their choosing.

Mooroopna

We also now have the chance to develop new and exciting ideas on how to use the old Mooroopna Secondary School site.

The floods have highlighted inadequacies in drainage and also in protection of vital infrastructure such as the electricity substation and these inadequacies must be remedied.

First Nations Advocacy

Our First Nations community is now producing many exciting young leaders who are making significant contributions to their own and the wider community. I have been advocating for funding for the GoulburnMurray Regional Prosperity Plan and I will continue to work towards securing funding to make this plan a great success so our First Nations people will have more opportunities for advancement, careers and economic inclusion.

Protecting democracy

People outside parliament may not be aware that Victoria’s Legislative Assembly is the only lower house in Australia that does not allow non-government members to introduce bills, move motions or use many other vital procedures available to other members. Along with my fellow crossbenchers and opposition members I will continue to fight for Victorian parliamentary reform to ensure that minority voices are given equal access to power. This is an integrity issue.

ANDREW PRENTICE

Shepparton

“Suzanna is a proven performer, her detailed knowledge and understanding of the issues that affect the electorate is outstanding. She has quickly established herself as a strong voice for Shepparton in Parliament. I believe with the experience she has gained over the last eight years she will achieve even more in this next term. Her ongoing advocacy for the bypass and road infrastructure is beginning to yield results. I have lived in Shepparton all my life and not for decades have I felt so optimistic about our future.”

DUDLEY BRYANT Numurkah

“Suzanna has highlighted the important issues that needed to be addressed in our region very successfully. The outcome achieved for our increased train services has been sensational. I feel Suzanna as an independent member for Shepparton, has given our electorate strong honest leadership and I look forward to her continuing on this into the future.”

MEG PETHYBRIDGE

Shepparton

“Suzanna’s leadership in representing our region at State and Federal levels has helped us to achieve so much. With so much more needed to help us recover from these flood events, it’s critical more than ever to maintain this momentum.”

PAUL BRIGGS

Shepparton

“As an independent Suzanna came on the political scene at the right time. Both parties can see the need to invest in our region. She’s worked with us on indigenous development. Having an independent gives us a point of difference. I don’t think we can get that if we are in a safe seat. For me there is no reason to want to change.”

Re-elected mayor gains a new, two-year term in response to flood recovery

COUNCILLOR Shane Sali was re-elected as mayor for Greater Shepparton City Council at the Additional Council Meeting held on Thursday night, October 27.

This will be Cr Sali's second time holding the position of mayor, having been in the role since June of this year following the resignation of Cr Kim O'Keeffe. Cr Sali will serve as mayor for the next two years.

The new two-year term replaces the existing one-year mayoral term, following the successful passing of a new amendment proposal. The two-year extension was introduced in response to the recent floods

and in anticipation of a lengthy recovery period, which calls for stability and continuity at Council.

Not all councillors supported the extended mayoral period and raised concerns about the short notification they had received.

In Cr Sali's mayoral address following the election, he said he was grateful for another opportunity to represent his fellow councillors, Council office and the wider Greater Shepparton community.

"We've just been through a major flood disaster, and I was overwhelmed by how

the people of Greater Shepparton came together," he said.

"I am proud of my fellow councillors for rolling up their sleeves and joining the people on the frontline. This flood event further united this council, council staff and the people of Greater Shepparton."

Looking towards the future, Cr Sali said Council must continue to actively grow the economy, attract new business and inspire greater economic growth.

Nominations for the position of deputy mayor were also taken, with a hung vote reached between incumbent deputy mayor,

Anthony Brophy and Cr Sam Spinks. The election for the deputy mayor will now be decided at a future Additional Council Meeting.

Travelling the extra mile to service the community

WHEN the flood waters rose rapidly on Monday, October 17 forcing Fairley’s IGA on Numurkah road to briefly shut its doors, extraordinary work went on behind the scenes to ensure that the region had what it needed when the store reopened.

Introducing alternative trading hours, the following day and with only a skeleton staff available, the store was able to service the community effectively as customers filtered back through its opened doors.

With its own sizeable warehouse outback full of dry goods and grocery items, the most pressing challenge for Fairley’s IGA became the supply of fresh produce.

Applauding the intrepid efforts of many of Fairys suppliers, fresh produce operations manager, Dom D’Agostino said, “We see our suppliers as our business partners, and they all went over and above to see our region had what it needed.”

Explaining how the freight of fresh produce was coordinated by the massive effort of suppliers, many of whom are

established in Melbourne, Dom said, “Trucks were travelling over an extra hour, facing two-hour return trips in order to get stock here. They’d have to go all the way north to go south, then all that way north again to get home.”

Fresh produce operation supervisor, Debbie Hill added, “After having been diverted three times trying to find a safe route to the Supa store, one distribution truck had to use another supplier’s cool store in Numurkah overnight after having already travelled hundreds of kilometres out of his way.”

With 95 percent of stock now back on the shelves, Debbie said,“We would like to thank all our suppliers for their energy and support not only for our store, but for the entire community.

“We would also like to thank all our amazing staff, some of whom have lost their homes to floods but still managed to turn up to work."

Birrell responds to Federal Budget

THE Australian Labor Party (ALP) handed down its federal budget on Tuesday, October 25. The ALP has described its first budget as, “a responsible budget for uncertain times,” but it is being criticised by Federal Member for Nicholls, Sam Birrell, for its failure to invest in regional Australia, or to address childcare needs and cost-ofliving pressures.

At least $4.6 billion

“I am all for helping people with childcare and I understand that support is important. But it is very generous to help two people on high incomes and to not address the shortage of childcare places in regional areas.”

Mr Birrell said, “We have some economic headwinds to be dealt with, especially with energy. What we are seeing though, is funding investment being diverted from the regions to the cities.”

Federal Member for

“While the treasurer announced $4.7 billion in childcare measures, he couldn’t create one new additional childcare place, leaving families across Nicholls no better off.”

Grants programs, like the $2B Regional Accelerator Program have been cancelled by the Government, leaving projects like the $19.5M Rural Clinical Health School in limbo.

The Government says it will save $4.6B over the next 12 years by cutting several of the previous Coalition Government’s water projects, as well as cancelling around $2B in grants promised by the previous government.

“Labor has also put an axe to funding for roads, rail and dams in regional and rural communities. Programs cut include the Energy Security and Regional Development Plan, Regional Accelerator Program, Community Development Grants Program and Building Better Regions Fund,” said Mr Birrell.

“At least $4.6 billion has been ripped out of regional and rural water projects.”

He said despite confusion in the news recently, the $600,000 funding promised by the Coalition for Shepparton Foodshare, supported by the Regional Accelerator Program, has been confirmed.

“Contracts had not been signed prior to the election caretaker periods, approval should have been a formality but instead Labor chose to delay and play politics.”

“The only failure was fact checking,” said Mr Birrell.

He said he was disappointed by the budget but would continue to seek answers for these “vital,” projects for Nicholls.

GV Health’s newest board member

DR Julia Cornwell McKean has been appointed as a Board Member of GV Health. Julia’s three-year appointment, by the Victorian Minister for Health, comes after a rigorous interview process, which saw 22 applicants for the position.

“I am delighted to be appointed as a board member at GV Health. My motivation stems from an opportunity to make a difference in our community,” said Julia.

“There is an increasing disparity of access to health services in regional and metro areas, and bridging that gap is vital. Attracting health professionals to rural areas is key, but so are alternative methods in the interim such as extending the use of telehealth for GPs, for example.”

A Doctor of Philosophy, Julia and holds

affiliations with several institutes. She is a Wiradjuri woman and is proud to reside on the lands of the Bpganerang people on the Victorian/NSW border at Barooga.

Julia currently works as a consultant and was a senior Commonwealth public servant. Her government roles over the past 12 years included responsibility for telecommunications consumer issues, enforcing spam and telemarketing laws for the Australian government, managing the Australian Internet Security Initiative, and in 2015 joining the Office of the Children’s eSafety Commissioner to set up and run its cyberbullying complaints scheme. Jukia is the director of her company, T One Enterprises, which provides a range of professional services to government and industry.

New campus in the heart of Benalla

GOTAFE is proud to reinforce its commitment to Benalla and provide more accessible education for the whole community, and therefore has made the decision to relocate to a new campus in the heart of town.

The $1.6M investment will deliver a new campus redefining vocational education delivery in Benalla, featuring contemporary learning spaces, modern technology, collaborative workspaces, engaging openflow classrooms and improved accessibility.

Travis Heeney, CEO GOTAFE said “The new CBD campus location will provide easy access to public transport, parking, food, shopping and services for our staff

GOTAFE is proud to be working with the Benalla Rural City Council and other local service providers to ensure that the campus will be an inclusive and supportive collaboration hub for all the community

GOTAFE is working with the Australian Christian College to optimise the use of the Samaria Road campus and provide further education resources to Benalla.

David Fyfe, Group CEO Christian Education Ministries said “Once we receive regulatory approval, we’re excited by the opportunity to relocate our school into the Samaria Road campus. Recent growth in student numbers means we are quickly outgrowing our current site, and the GOTAFE site has become available at the ideal time for our school community”.

State-of-the-art design named best in state

It’s official – the design of Greater Shepparton Secondary College has made it a winner with students, teachers and now the judges of the prestigious 2022 Victorian School Design Awards.

Architects Gray Puksand took out the category for ‘Best School Project’ for their design of GSSC’s new Hawdon St campus. They were praised for delivering the first-class sporting, technology, science and arts facilities of a large school, with students learning and socialising in their smaller, inclusive House and Neighbourhood.

Needing no convincing is Year 11’s Jaiden Heinzmann: “The new facilities are incredible, and provide students with great buildings to complete their studies - especially the Year 11 and 12 VCE and VCAL subjects.”

Call for bypass to ease future flood pain

“It was lovely to meet someone with so much authority,” said Paul Jerome, owner of Talisman Menswear. “I told him honestly that Covid felt like being kicked, and to now be experiencing this feels like being kicked by a boot with spikes.”

“We only lost six flannelette shirts, which in a shop with thousands of dollars in stock is incredible.”

“But if the floods have taught me one thing, it is that we need a bypass. It is vital that the bypass is funded for emergencies and so the community and transport can move freely,” said Paul.

“25 years, six changes of Parliament and still no bypass. The land has been purchased and they need to get on with it.”

He resounded praise for Cr Sali and Council, expressing that in his opinion, he has never seen Council working so prominently amongst the community.

“I told the Governor-General that he is going to have a hard time picking the next Australian of the Year with Shane Sali or Bill Dowling working so hard in the community.”

Bill and the Mooroopna FNC led a huge post-flood recovery “working bee” of over 200 volunteers across more than 30 teams assisting residents and businesses.

“Shane and Bill have shone through, and

it is tremendous to see. They are only two people though, there have been countless others helping one another. After the flood I had people knocking on my shop asking if they could help with anything, it really makes me so happy to see these true examples of community spirit.”

While in Shepparton, their Excellencies also visited Shepparton Emergency Relief to meet and thank staff and volunteers.

Talisman Menswear hopes to reopen on November 8, while Mooroopna FNC are making alternative arrangements for netball trials. Follow their Facebook pages to stay up to date.

Top local business for sale

A GREAT business opportunity has become available in the Shepparton CBD. After more than 30 years trading history, local produce outlet Finer Fruit, is for sale.

Its’ respected reputation is a credit to the hard work of the Rachele family, who purchased the business from the Andreadis family over 25 years ago, collectively building a successful fruit and vegetable retail business with an extensive wholesale network and fabulous local and interstate connections.

After a proud history servicing the Goulburn Valley and beyond, Sammy and Jodie Rachele are stepping back from the business after many fruitful years.

“It has been an honour providing fresh quality produce to the region. We are sad to go but equally excited to see the future growth of Finer Fruit,” said Sammy.

Located in the Vaughan and Rowe Streets precinct with ample free and paid on-street parking, plus plenty of foot

traffic, this offer is a golden opportunity with enviable patronage.

Finer Fruit is a very solid business with more than $3.8M annual turnover, it has three cool rooms and over 880sqm between the retail space and a separate storage facility, an excellent reputation for quality and service, and shop presentation that is as premier as its location.

The sale is being managed by Kelvin Maude from Kevin Hicks Real Estate, who said, “This is a cracking local business that has fantastic scope for a business owner to secure a well-known and beloved local enterprise with a successful organisation with a far-reaching wholesale network.”

Conserving pieces from our region’s rich history

COSERVATION EFFORTS RECEIVE A $40K BOOST...

The Tatura Internment and P.O.W. Camps Artefact Conservation Program is supported by the Victorian Government through the Living Heritage Grants Program. Tatura museum secretary George Ferguson stands in front of some of the 15 items the $40k grant will go towards preserving.

From tiny towns the most beautiful things grow

NOW on the cusp of opening, weather permitting, the Gargarro Botanic Gardens in Girgarre promises to be a bold and beautiful sensory destination.

Described as the jewel in the crown of the Campaspe region, the new world-class botanical installation will not only be alive with an abundance of natives but will also provide a spectacular sensory experience with five uniquely designed gardens, each appealing to one of the five senses.

See, Listen, Taste, Touch and Smell represent each of the five gardens to be developed and will fall under a stewardship that is responsive to climatic variables, celebratory of First Nations People and their history as well as endeavour to induce a sense of wellbeing

amongst its patrons.

With ongoing funding and grants supporting the Gargarro Botanic Gardens project, the new Girgarre Café is also set to open, offering visitors and locals alike with a meeting place as well as a delicious hub for refreshment and relaxation.

With a vision focussed squarely on sustainability and best practice assuring the revitalisation of endangered species, the Gargarro Botanic Gardens is not only an innovative model incorporating a garden nursery, which exclusively sells cultivated natives, but a multifaceted experience that will also include live performances and events, staged from its world class amphitheatre, aptly called the Soundshell.

THE Tatura and District Historical Society, home to a trove of historical treasures, have received a $40,000 grant to be used for the conservation and restoration of items at their museum in Tatura.

The Living Heritage Program grants support the repair and conservation of ‘at risk’ heritage places and objects identified as being of state significance, and are included in the Victorian Heritage Register under the provision of the Heritage Act 2017.

To determine what pieces were deemed to require conservation efforts, Tatura Museum secretary, George Ferguson, explained how the Grimwade Conservation Services of the University of Melbourne examined, and analysed, the vast collection at the museum to identify 15 particular items in need of conservation efforts.

“All the items are a part of the ‘Tatura World

War II Interment & POW Camps Collection’, and the actual work will take up to nine months to complete,” said Mr Ferguson.

Significant items include books, wool and other important textile objects – as identified in the ‘Collection Risk Management Plan’.

“This burgundy wool coat was actually a military coat at first, originally khaki green. This coat and others like it were dyed this dark red shade and given to internees as our winters can be quite cold,” explained Mr Ferguson.

“These items are an important part of our national history; it is vital that we preserve them and can have them displayed for the public to view. The Tatura Internment and P.O.W. Camps Artefact Conservation Program, is supported by the Victorian Government through the Living Heritage Grants Program, and we are grateful to have been recipients of these funds.”

New date and venue for the 2022 White King – Pental Business Excellence Awards

All finalists of the 2021 and 2022 White King – Pental Business Excellence Awards, as well as friends, family and the wider community, will celebrate 25 years of business excellence at a new venue, GV Hotel.

Shepparton Chamber of Commerce and Industry Chamber manager, Tracy Lyle, and the rest of the Chamber are excited to finally celebrate alongside the nominees.

“We appreciate the community’s patience with us as we worked to ensure the gala dinner will go ahead before the year’s end,” said Tracy.

“As a region we have faced some difficult times, but we look forward to this celebration of our resilient business community.”

Breaking down the language barrier in an emergency

THE community of Greater Shepparton is a rich tapestry of diverse culture and language.

With 90 nationalities and 63 languages represented in the municipality, organisations like The Ethnic Council and Point of Difference have worked hard off the back of the pandemic to get translated, key messages out into the multicultural community.

Stating that one’s language should not exclude someone from important information, The Ethnic Council’s manager, Chris Hazelman said, “Learning from Covid we set up an email distribution list with hundreds of people. With bilingual translators we were able to get emergency and government messaging out and across the community.”

With the rapid nature and frequently changing circumstances of the recent floods, however, Chris said, “The volume and complexity of the alerts and messages coming through was not only fast but changing. We would have needed a whole army of

translators to keep ahead of it.”

Despite the conundrum of communication, Chris stated that the immediate response of hundreds of volunteers rushing to assist families and individuals in need was astounding and inspiring, “I can’t acknowledge highly enough the groups and individuals who selflessly volunteered their time and skills to assist our ethnic community. With homes of their own under threat these volunteers worked ceaselessly; delivering food boxes, filling sandbags and rapidly translating emergency warnings.”

Looking to the future, Chris said that the ethnic community’s voice needs to be incorporated in the emergency services planning, coordination and response processes.

With a proposal put forward to government to establish a coordinating role to work alongside emergency services and planning, Chris hopes that a robust relationship between the two will address the diverse needs of the ethnic community when faced with a future crisis.

Stay close, go further.

You don’t have to go far to feel like you’re a whole world away. Just far enough to leave the crowds behind and nd your space. A place where you can reconnect with nature, soak in the scenery and feed your soul. And okay, enjoy some great wine while you’re at it. Go further in Victoria.

Mayor’s message

“Seeing the flooding across the region over these past weeks has been difficult for everyone. Thousands of properties have been affected by floodwaters across Greater Shepparton. While this has been an extremely tough time for us all, residents have remained calm and patient, and the community spirit shown has been unlike no other. I want to say a huge thank you to everyone across the region for helping out in whatever way they can. Whether that was through checking in on family, friends and neighbours, helping out with the massive task of filling sandbags, delivering food and supplies to isolated households or helping out with the huge clean-up task – your efforts have been remarkable. It is through difficult times like this where our community truly shines and we have shown just how resilient we are.”

Flood waste removal from homes

Greater Shepparton City Council is coordinating a FREE service with Disaster Relief Australia (DRA) for removal of waste from flood impacted homes.

DRA can offer assistance in removal of flood damaged home contents such as furniture, appliances and personal items as well as removal of carpets and pressure washing. DRA is unable to remove asbestos.

DRA will coordinate with the kerbside flood waste collection team where possible to ensure waste is placed on nature strips prior to the scheduled collection occurring.

If you require assistance from DRA please register shepp.city/request-help or call 0466 836 257

Kerbside flood affected waste collection Council is working to ensure that household waste from flood affected homes throughout the region is able to be disposed of easily and safely.

There are seven collection zones throughout Greater Shepparton, with each zone being assigned a day of the week for collections for a period of four weeks. This will allow residents to prepare and means there will be multiple opportunities for households to have their waste collected.

We have already commenced with some collections as needed and scheduled collections in each zone will commence from Wednesday 2 November 2022.

152 pages of inspiration and innovation

THE Goulburn Valley business community is full of incredible business stories that keep the gears of industry turning in our towns.

The biggest publication in The Adviser’s history, the eighth edition of Our Goulburn Valley magazine, is being distributed to selected areas over the coming weeks. This special feature encapsulates the stories behind some of the most remarkable businesses and businesspeople of the region.

The 152-page gloss magazine will be letterbox delivered to selected areas and available from The Adviser office’s reception at 38-40 Welsford Street, Shepparton.

A total of 147 businesses and organisations are showcased in the publication, with a total of 953 faces that drive our region’s commerce and industries to deliver exceptional growth, prosperity and resilience across the board.

This year’s theme was ‘Inspiring innovation, resilience and passion in our community’, with our articles capturing the essence of what

makes the heart of Greater Shepparton tick. These stories illustrate the way the people behind businesses have adapted, and in many cases thrived, despite the challenges we have all faced over the past 12 months.

It’s a celebration of the region’s business achievements, with special messages from key dignitaries of the Goulburn Valley and members of both the State and Federal Parliaments, including from Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese.

The publication is a chance to reflect on what has been a memorable and historic year, an inspirational snapshot of our region's outstanding business acumen we can refer to in years to come.

Enjoy reading this record-breaking gloss magazine, compliments of the wider business community, regional organisations, various levels of government, and The Adviser publishing team.

96 years old and wonderful

ON her 96th birthday on Wednesday, October 26, the ebullient and much loved Von Carter was brought to tears of joy and surprise when her friends and family orchestrated a surprise birthday party in her honour at the Senior Citizens Club.

With her daughter and her son-in law, Janice and John Agosta travelling up from Ocean Grove, the surprise celebrations were planned and organised by Von’s dear friend and long-time neighbour, Jenny Carter.

With cheerful banter, a light lunch and tea and coffee aplenty, Von was moved by the warmth and love shown by her nearest and dearest.

As the cake was cut and two huge nine and six balloons bobbled overhead, Von’s family and friends affectionately paid tribute to the vibrant nonagenarian who looked much younger than her years.

“Mum is always happy, easy-going and never forgets a thing,” Janice said with a smile before adding, “The Senior Citizens Club and her

gardening keep her very busy. She is always going out on excursions, and she has lots of friends. For the past 20 years Mum has been a member of the club and it has really been so good for her.”

Gripping her hand tightly before a warm embrace, Jenny said that she enjoyed gardening with her neighbour and friend, and it was a great pleasure to keep a look out for her, as much as it was a pleasure for Von to do the same.

Get to know your candidates

IN the lead up to the state election, to be held on Saturday, November 26, the Committee for Greater Shepparton (C4GS) will host a candidates’ forum for voters to ask questions and learn more about potential representatives.

Voters are encouraged to attend and learn more about issues that affect Northern Victoria and the Shepparton District. It is the ideal time to hear about each candidate’s views and their vision for the electorate.

Independent Suzanna Sheed MP, who currently holds the seat of Shepparton, will be joined on stage at Riverlinks Eastbank by Nationals candidate Kim O’Keeffe, and Liberal candidate Cheryl Hammer for the free public event.

The ballot will be declared November 11, and candidates have until this time to register for election and are invited to

speak at the forum.

Linda Nieuwenhuizen, C4GS CEO, said, “We will be doing our best to track down all the candidates for a diverse and engaging panel.”

Voters must enrol or update their details by Tuesday, November 8 to be able to vote. This includes young people who may be voting for the first time.

“With floods and everything going on lately, including VCE Year 12 exams, it is important the community know the key dates in the lead up to the election. To enrol or to update your details, go online to the VEC website,” said Linda.

The forum will start at 5.30pm on Tuesday, November 15. To register, visit sheppartonforum.eventbrite.com. au. Questions for candidates are to be submitted via Eventbite, or emailed to jodie.flemming@c4gs.com.au

Council resolved to provide complimentary on-street car parking in the Shepparton CBD for the months of December and January each year.

Council also resolved to maintain the current position of providing year-round complimentary off-street car parking in Council-owned car parks.

2021-2022 Annual Report

Council endorsed the 2021-2022 Annual Report which outlines Council’s achievements and activities throughout the year.

While Greater Shepparton faced a tough 12 months, there were plenty of highs for the region including major events Illuminate and White Night, and celebrating the planting of 100,000 trees as part of the One Tree Per Child program.

Grant funding awarded

Close to $50,000 will be injected back into local sporting clubs and organisations as part of the 2022/2023 Our Sporting Future Funding Program.

Council noted the awarding of this funding to eight local sporting clubs to help fund development projects, programs, facility updates and the purchase of equipment.

Council also noted the awarding of $3,000 to six local community groups as part of Round Two of the 2022 Greater Shepparton Seniors Festival Grants Program.

Calder Woodburn Memorial Avenue Advisory Committee

Council appointed five community representatives to the Advisory Committee for a three-year term.

The Calder Woodburn Memorial Avenue consists of four rows of mature native eucalypt trees running for nearly 20km along the Goulburn Valley Highway.

Local HR extraordinaire launches new book

LAST Thursday saw local business owner Michael Milburn officially launch his book on leadership at the Shepparton Brewery.

The book titled ‘Hey Guess What? You’re in HR – Becoming a People Leader’ examines the skills required to be developed for a new team leader, supervisor or manager, beyond the scope of their technical skills.

The book is based on Michael’s career in Human Resources spanning more than 25 years.

“In many companies that I have worked for, both large and small, you always get an

employee manual on your first day of work, but no one ever gives you a management manual once you get promoted. You are just expected to know things, in most cases things you have never dealt with or experienced before,” explained Michael.

Through Michael’s expertise in developing new leaders, the book covers the key areas that a person needs to develop their leadership skills. There are tips and tricks, but like any new skill, it takes practice.

Michael is passionate about education and developing others, giving everyone a chance

to grow regardless of their background.

From every book sold, $5 will be donated

Reform movement captured in satirical cartoons

A SERIES of Punch Cartoons satirizing the fall of the Victorian Peacock Government, as a result of the Kyabram Reform movement, are currently on display at the Kyabram Town Hall Gallery until November 26th.

The 121st anniversary of the first meeting

of local people dissatisfied with injustices and government corruption, which inspired the works on display, will be commemorated on Sunday, November 13 at the hall.

Kyabram Town Hall Gallery & Information Centre is open Monday through Saturday from 10am until 4pm. It is located at 199-209 Allen Street, and they can be contacted via email at info@kyabramtownhall.com.au or via phone on 5852 1546.

THE slot car racing fraternity is composed of collectors, racers and modellers. Michael ‘Mike’ Barrow boasts what he calls a “small collection” of around 300-400 cars and describes himself as a bit of everything – a collector, creator and racer of miniature vehicles.

At his home in Kialla, Mike has constructed an impressive four-lane slot car track where a group of passionate locals meet on Monday evenings to show off their cars and racing talent.

With a price-point of $80-$90 for a basic, entry-level model, slot car racing has unparalleled appeal for car enthusiasts, the

creatively minded and the nostalgic.

“Slot cars can be very emotional for a lot of people. When you mention the brand name Scalextric to someone it can bring back a lot of memories, they have stories from when they were kids of their first model or cars they grew up with,” said Mike.

“There are females in the sport that show a lot of talent but right now, slot car racing is predominantly male. It’s a chance for men to get together and be social, talk about what is going on in their lives. I’ve made friends all over the country and the world through slot racing.”

Mike has been involved in the slot car scene since he was a teenager living in New Zealand.

He moved to Shepparton six years ago where he started with a track that he bought at a local swap meet and met fellow enthusiasts.

In September, Mike competed in the NSR National Championships held in Western Australia, where he placed fourth overall.

“I’m very keen to help anyone who might be interested. We make sure everyone gets a chance to win, and I’m happy to mentor others to show them how they can win.”

Shepparton has a thriving slot car scene well supported by car enthusiasts and hobby shops. If you would like to get involved, you may contact Michael Barrow via email at m.b.r103@hotmail.com or find him on Facebook.

WITH SUZANNA

ROB PRIESTLY Shepparton

We have three good people as viable candidates for this election, all with good intentions. Unfortunately, in the current climate in Victoria, only one of them can follow through with action. Like it or not, pundits predict we face a 90 per chance of a Labor government again in Victoria, and electing a local Liberal or National candidate won’t change that. As a community, we know how important it is to have a representative that can work with government. We can’t afford to have our local members at both Federal and State levels of government sitting in opposition with no influence.

Is there another community anywhere in regional Victoria that has had more investment than Shepparton in the past 8 years? I guarantee, there are no safe seats that have seen the investment Shepparton has had. This stream of investment is not an accident, flowing regardless of who we elect locally. It flows because of who we elect. We change the local member, we stop the flow. In Suzanna, we have someone committed to their community first. Not a party. Not their career. Committed to us.

If we elect a local member who chooses a party first and sits in opposition, we lose our influence as a community, and the investment tap will be turned off.

Suzanna Sheed has worked hard, delivered, and been committed. For some of us electing a Liberal or a National local member might feel good for a moment, but as a community, we will come to regret it. With an independent that will work with either side of politics, and puts our community first, we can’t lose. There is so much more we can achieve.

BELLA AINSWORTH Shepparton

“I support Suzanna because I have seen her work to get a good understanding of the issues we face and she works to advocate for results. Suzanna seems to be able to get in front of the right people and stand up and be counted when it counts in Parliament. I feel she is the strongest voice to represent our region.”

JAMIE LEA Shepparton

“I stand with Suzanna because I believe in the power of momentum. Suzanna is authentic, she listens, and she is dedicated to doing the very best she can for our region. She has achieved so much for Shepparton and our future. We need to keep the momentum going.”

NEHA SAMAR

“I support Suzanna because I can see the difference she is making. Suzanna understands the issues our communities face and provides strong consistent advocacy to all types and levels of government to advocate for the support our region needs. With her, I feel we are well represented. Vote 1 Suzanna Sheed to help our region.”

“Suzanna and I have been strong advocates for this community for decades and will continue to do so. Suzanna is a strong representative and has the capacity to understand and address the needs of our district’s residents. She is truly independent and therefore able to advocate freely for us without being told what to do by a political party. We will continue to do this good work, and I will stand by and support her when she is re-elected”.

ANGE AND JIM ANDREADIS Toolamba

“We have both enjoyed a longstanding association with Shepparton Foodshare in various roles, from its inception to board involvement and hands-on warehouse volunteer work and we remain passionate supporters.

Suzanna has advocated tirelessly on Foodshare’s behalf and has yet again brought results rather than promises to our region.

We were delighted with the state and federal governments’ contribution towards the building of Foodshare’s new permanent home on the land we donated in Mooroopna.

The State Government funding was secured principally through Suzanna’s quiet but persistent lobbying.

We extend our grateful thanks to Suzanna.”

DENNIS “PATTO” PATTERSON Mooroopna

“At last, our Shepparton and district community is receiving the funding we have sadly missed out on for so many years. $1.5 billion over the last eight years for trains, hospitals, schools, and a motherbaby unit, is a figure we could only dream of in previous years. Like Dan Andrews or not, he is a red hot favourite to form government for another term. If the Liberals or Nationals take the seat of Shepparton we would be back to the bad old days of being represented from the cross bench with no chance of attracting funds for the area. We can’t afford to turn the funding tap off. Vote for Shepparton. Vote Suzanna Sheed.”

KEVIN “GUNNA” RYAN Tatura

“You just have to look at the development that is going on, hundreds of millions of dollars in the region. I stood with Suzanna last time and I stand with her again. I believe Suzanna has worked very hard to achieve change for the district. Why would you go back?”

NIGEL PARSONS Shepparton

“I wholeheartedly support Suzanna Sheed MP and hope for her re-election for the continued prosperity of the Shepparton District. Apart from the investment Suzanna has been instrumental in securing, I’ve worked closely with Suzanna for a number of years. Her genuine care and hard work to promote not only this area’s voice, but those of minority and even opposition in the state parliament is unwavering. We MUST have Suzanna representingus for the good of this amazing region!”

SIMONE GALE Shepparton

“Suzanna has continued to raise issues that affect our community, Education at all levels, water, and rail to name a few. She is passionate about the Goulburn Valley and its people, and I am happy to continue to support her given her knowledge, understanding and continued passion she brings to this position.”
