New train line upgrades get services on track

THE newest and fastest models in the VLine fleet, the VLocity trains, will begin their service to and from Shepparton on Sunday, October 23 with a new timetable coming into effect on the day.

Delivering more frequent and reliable services, the newly completed first stage of the line upgrade will provide 10 extra train services a week between Melbourne and Shepparton, with extra stops at Heathcote Junction, Tallarook and Donnybrook.

New VLocity trains will also cater to commuter comfort with mobile signal boosters providing better phone coverage while greater accessibility for people with prams and mobility aids will make train travel more inclusive.

Visiting Shepparton Railway Station to see the line upgrades first-hand and as a part of The Nationals regional listening tour, National Party leader, David Littleproud said, “I know this rail line matters to locals and the improvements will make a huge difference.

“The former Liberals and Nationals Government committed $320M towards the $400M Shepparton rail line upgrade.”

Joining Mr Littleproud on the platform, Nationals shadow minister for infrastructure, transport and regional development, senator Bridget McKenzie called upon the federal Government to commit even more funding and support for regional and rural infrastructure, while Nationals' candidate, Kim O’ Keeffe made an election pledge,

“This [rail upgrade] is one of many of the significant contributions to our region from the National Party. It has supported 900 direct jobs, which is wonderful...If elected [in

Fish swim into their new home

GOULBURN-Murray Water (GMW) and Goulburn Valley Water (GVW) have teamed up to relocate some fish to a place where they will be a perk instead of a pest.

During its Winter Works program, GMW lowers channels across its region so it can desilt them and treat them for weeds. In July, the Number 1 Channel at Leitchville was lowered by GMW.

GMW works closely with the Victorian Fisheries Authority (VFA) to ensure when the channels are lowered the fish can be rescued and relocated. GMW also collaborated with GVW to relocate the fish to a fish hatchery in Shepparton.

The fish hatchery will help stock GVW and the Burnanga Indigenous Fishing Club’s Dunyak Moira project (meaning fishing lake in Yorta Yorta language). The project will transform two decommissioned lagoons at the Merrigum Water Treatment Plant into lakes that will be stocked with native fish.

“When we dewater our channels, we always do what we can to rescue and relocate native fish in them. Often we simply transport them back to nearby creeks, but it is great that in this instance we know we are moving them to somewhere they will be a valuable asset,” said GMW Water Delivery Services general manager, Warren Blyth.

Milestone celebration for important community cause

FOR 50 years, Shepparton Search and Rescue Squad has been protecting the community and providing specialised search and rescue services to the wider Shepparton region. On Saturday, current and past members, emergency service representatives and local dignitaries came together to celebrate the organisation, its impact and its history.

“It was a very good evening, everyone enjoyed the celebrations,” said SSARS president, Nacole Standfield.

“We paid tribute to our founding member Ed Jezewski, who sadly passed away prior to the event, and celebrated all past and present members, their hard work and dedication for over 50 years.”

Jason Kittlety was awarded the 10-year Service Award. Mr Kittlety has volunteered with SSARS for 10 years but prior was a long-term member of the CFA, which he has a national medal for his 35-year-strong contribution to emergency services.

Carl Zabilowicz was awarded the Jezewski Family -

Member of the Year Award, named after the founding brothers of SSARS and awarded by their family members who attended on the night.

The 170 guests in attendance also heard from founding member Frank Gaylard, who talked of the organisation's history, local MPs Suzanna Sheed and Wendy Lovell, and guest speaker, Chrystal Rexter – who spoke about her lived experience being rescued by SSARS at a critical time at Greens Lake.

SSARS is a non-profit, charitable organisation run by volunteers for the Greater Shepparton community. Potential volunteers are invited to come along on a Monday evening at 7.30pm to 15 Dudley Street, Shepparton, where they meet for training and social activities.

Get a flood plan in place

THE Greater Shepparton region has a history of flooding, with recent rainfall prompting the SES to urge people to have a flood plan in place.

Even if your property is not affected by floodwater, you may be impacted indirectly by road closures, isolation and disruption to essential services including telephones, power and sewerage. Flooding from the rivers in this area usually lasts about four to seven days depending on the rainfall. Roads and properties can also flood due to water backing up in the

stormwater drain system.

Flash flooding caused by heavy rainfall can also occur in low-lying areas, especially in the industrial and business areas of Mooroopna and Shepparton East and around the Doyle’s Road- Midland Highway roundabout.

Have an ‘Emergency Plan’ in place, it takes very little time and may save lives and property. The SES has a step-by-step guide and a template to help. Find the template, your local area’s flood guide and more information at www.ses.vic.gov.au.

Make sure you have essential items on hand and a kit including these items ready to go:

• Radio (battery-powered)

• Torches

• A supply of batteries (multiple sizes)

• Device chargers (solar-powered and standard)

• Mobile phone

• Food - basic staples that don’t require heating or cooling

• Bottled water

• Warm, waterproof clothing and comfortable shoes

• Spare medication, prescriptions

• A first aid kit

• Pet essentials

• Cash and a printed copy of your Emergency Plan (RediPlan).

Stay Safe and:

• Never drive, ride or walk through floodwater

• Never allow children to play in or near floodwater

• If evacuated, do not return until it is safe to do so

• Follow the advice of authorities (including any requests for evacuation)

• Leave early before flooding occurs and go to family or friends on higher ground if you can

• Contact family, neighbours and those you know are at risk to ensure they are aware of the situation and know what to do.

Coalition commits to Foodshare’s ‘forever home’

THE future of Shepparton Foodshare has received a positive commitment from the state Liberal-Nationals Coalition, who have promised $1M to build the organisation’s ‘forever home’ if elected in November.

Shepparton Foodshare chair, Jeremy Rensford welcomed the commitment, which he said would be suitable for getting the development underway.

“We’ve been doing our very best to raise money to be ready to go, so there is a healthy amount to get started — but you can’t build something for hundreds of thousands, it has to be millions,” he said.

“To get another step closer is huge for us. We spend considerable energy and time as a board on this issue.”

The $1M funding commitment will help deliver a fit-forpurpose facility that will allow Shepparton Foodshare to continue to distribute over 400,000kg of food to more than 100 registered agencies across six local government areas, ensuring that food relief is provided to the most vulnerable

members of these communities.

Foodshare has relied on community support to stay viable year to year, and the lack of security has been the greatest risk facing the organisation. In April, local philanthropists Jim and Ange Andreadis donated land for its forever home, which helped Foodshare secure $600,000 in funding from the Federal Government.

Member for Northern Victoria, Wendy Lovell was joined by candidates Kim O’Keeffe and Cheryl Hammer who have all been long and passionate advocates for Shepparton Foodshare.

Nation’s foodbowl future uncertain

CONCERNS about the future of irrigation and farming in the Goulburn-Murray Irrigation District (GMID) have been raised by Independent Member for Shepparton District Suzanna Sheed, after the release of an independent report into the impacts of pending buybacks from the basin.

A report by Frontier Economics Social and economic impacts of Basin Plan water recovery in Victoria outlines the socio-economic impacts of water recovery on irrigators and communities in northern Victoria.

The report showed that previous recovery from the region resulted in 50 percent less water use in the GMID, which puts pressure on the viability of irrigation in our district and the industries and communities it supports. It also showed

that water recovery from the consumptive pool caused a price rise of about $72 per ML.

“The figures we see from recovery already carried out is stark, but we know further buybacks and on-farm efficiency programs are on the agenda as the Murray Darling Basin Plan comes to an end and will not meet the water recovery targets required,” Ms Sheed said.

“The report shows us that due to less water being used, our milk production was only half of what it could have been in 2021 and 2022, which has a direct impact on our communities.

“Further buybacks will add even more economic harm to the GMID and will leave farmers uncertain about their

futures. If the Federal Government uses buybacks to recover the shortfall from our unfinished offset projects and the 450GL of upwater, the taxpayer is also going to be slugged with a hefty bill.”

Federal Water Minister Tanya Plibersek and our basin state ministers will meet to discuss major water issues at MinCo (Murray-Darling Basin Council) meeting, and Ms Sheed is eager to hear the outcome.

“I hope this report will demonstrate the impact further buybacks could have on Victoria and I am pleased that the Victorian Government is opposed to further buybacks to reach our recovery targets on time and stands by the socioeconomic test,” Ms Sheed said.

Northern end of the Maude Street Mall opens up

POWER for lighting will not be available until the end of the project, but that temporary lighting will be in place during that time. The finishing touches are now taking place on the shelters.

Residual works will be undertaken at isolated areas throughout the north end, but this will not impact pedestrian movement. Vehicles will not be allowed into the Maude Street Mall area until completion of the overall project in November.

Council has expressed their appreciation of the patience of the community and

retailers during the works. Residents are encouraged to visit the much-anticipated open space whilst continuing to shop local.

The Maude Street Mall Precinct Redevelopment is part of Shepparton’s CBD Revitalisation Project. The project also included works to rejuvenate Vaughan Street (completed) and the Maude Street Bus Interchange and Maude Street between Ashenden and High Streets.

The redevelopment includes modern street furniture, shelters with solar panels, CCTV, audio, lighting, a new playground and the addition of one-way low-speed traffic, southbound from Fryers Street to High Street, with on-street parking.

A man entered a shop on Branditt Avenue and threatened staff with a weapon around 10:45am. The man left the shop with stolen property and was last seen on Malcolm Crescent, Shepparton. If life threatening, call 000.

Guiding comes to Salvation Army church

ON September 11, Girl Guides, leaders and other members of the Guiding fraternity attended a service to dedicate and remember its faith awareness, as part of the promise and law of Guiding.

Shepparton Salvation Army corps officer

Captain Karyn Wishart gave a warm welcome to all. Zoe then ceremoniously brought in the Guiding World Flag that was accepted by Captain Karyn, who then proceeded to explain all the symbols and parts on the flag and their meanings.

Dinah Reeve then gave an overview of Guiding, its origins and founding that Guiding Australia began in 1927 and currently has 19,000 members. Guides have always taken part in these services,

and after some hymn singing, Ruby read a passage from the Bible and The Captain’s address was mainly centered around young people.

the service end, the flag was handed back to Zoe who walked it out with much dignity. A lovely lunch was served, and all congregation mingled with Guiding members.

Our water stories

GOULBURN Valley residents are encouraged to learn about the world of water this month, with two of Goulburn Valley Water’s sites open to the public for the first time since the pandemic.

The tours are being held as part of National Water Week, which begins on Monday, October 17. The theme this year is ‘Our Water Stories’, encouraging people to explore their own stories around water and its importance in their lives every day.

Students across the Goulburn Valley have also been creating water-themed works of art during Term 3, challenging them to create a jigsaw puzzle artwork sharing their water story.

Finalists will be announced during

National Water Week. Goulburn Valley Water managing director, Steve Capewell said the tours during National Water Week were a great opportunity for a rare insight behind the scenes at two of GVW’s water treatment plants.

“National Water Week is a great opportunity to learn more about where your water comes from, and the process we go through to filter and treat it to high standards to ensure it’s safe to drink,” Dr Capewell said.

‘It’s also a great reminder of how important it is to be waterwise to conserve water for future generations to enjoy and how much we rely on water in our daily lives, from drinking and cooking to hygiene,

cleaning and recreation.”

An upgrade was completed at Tatura during the past couple of years, expanding the plant’s capacity to treat 12 megalitres of water per day to 18ML, which will help meet future demand as the town grows. A new dissolved air floatation and filtration plant was also installed. Shepparton’s treatment plant also received upgrades on its filter systems in the past year to help improve the treatment process.

Tour spots are limited, and registrations are essential – they close at 3pm on Friday, October 14. To book your spot or for more information, visit gvwater.vic.gov.au/ community/national-waterweek.

Timely documentary showing in Shepparton

PREMIERING this October, the new documentary How to Thrive: a practical guide to happiness, is a heartfelt, hopeful journey which tracks the successful transformation of seven participants with mental health issues, guided by a positive psychotherapist, Marie McLeod.

How to Thrive asks: ‘If we offer the science of happiness to people experiencing struggle, what difference would it make?’ Throughout the film, McLeod sets out to create change by offering participants interventions that focus

less on their issues, problems and disorders –and instead on the things that are going well in their lives.

Its goal? To offer actionable tools and strategies for audiences to adopt towards lifelong wellbeing and happiness regardless of where they are on the mental health continuum.

A first documentary from Beyondedge directed by Duy Huynh, How to Thrive launches to coincide with Mental Health Week and is a direct response to the growing mental health crisis.

Dr Peggy Kern, a positive psychologist researcher at the University of Melbourne and an expert on measuring wellbeing and its impact on life trajectory oversaw the program and its impact through tracked data.

“Throughout the program, participants developed skills and resources to support their

wellbeing, and felt increasingly able to take care of themselves well. Importantly, psychological distress, feelings of struggle, and loneliness decreased across the program, with decreases sustained two years later, with a nearly 150 percent increase in confidence around wellbeing skills.”

Cashprizedraw

How to Thrive will screen at Village Cinemas Shepparton on Sunday, October 16 at 4pm, and Wednesday, October 26 at 6.30pm with a special Q&A with Duy Huynh and Marie McLeod.

Excitement at Shepparton City Sports City for

Asian Cup qualifiers

THE Australia U-17 soccer team made a spectacular start to its campaign in the AFC U-17 Asian Cup 2023 Qualifiers at Shepparton Sports City with an emphatic 23-0 win against the Northern Mariana Islands in the Group G competition on Wednesday, October 5.

With inclement weather not diminishing the excitement of the 700 strong crowd, player of the match, Nestory Irankunda wowed spectators by scoring four goals, the first within 70 seconds of kick-off. The ‘wonderkid’ from Adelaide United FC left little scope for defence for the Blue Ayuyu with his devasting mix of speed and skill.

The Subway Joeys continued their dominance on the field on match-day two to secure a 10 – 0 win over Cambodia on Friday, October 7.

After making some alterations to the team after the decisive win in the opening match, head coach, Brad Maloney proudly saw his team take the lead after less than

five minutes against the Angkor Warriors, going on to score a 3-0 cushion at half time.

Nestroy Irankuda again made his mark early in the second half and from there piled on the goals in front of a 703 strong crowd.

Player of the match, however, went to Sydney Wanderers FC star, Max Hately, who bagged a brace.

Meeting the mighty China PR on Sunday 9, in front of an elated 1,117 strong crowd, the Joey’s secured a 3-1 win to clinch the top spot of Group G and with it an automatic qualification to next year’s AFC U-17 Asian cup.

With 36 goals bagged and with Nestory Irankunda again taking player of the match, the undefeated Australians are certain to make a formidable presence on the world stage in next year’s Herculean Asian Cup tournament.
