In 1983, President Ronald Reagan designated October 6 as German-American Day to commemorate the 300th anniversary of Germantown, Pennsylvania—the first German settlement in the United States. Later, in August 1987, he signed Proclamation No. 5719, encouraging Americans to honor the occasion through fitting ceremonies and activities.
In early October of this year, Minister President of Rheinland-Pfalz, Alexander Schweitzer, traveled to Washington, D.C. for high-level discussions on a range of topics, including meetings at the Pentagon. A key focus of the visit was the presence of U.S. military forces in Rheinland-Pfalz, particularly in locations such as the Kaiserslautern Military Community, Baumholder, and Spangdahlem.
Did you know that Homburg, a small city just down A6 towards Saarbrücken or Zweibrücken, plays a decisive role in GermanAmerican relations and has a chest full of hidden historical treasures?
Homburg is famous for one of the largest breweries in Germany, its caves “Schlossberghöhlen,” and its castle ruins. It hosts the largest flea market in the region and a restructured Roman village can be explored at nearby village Schwarzenacker. However, not many know that former residents, soldiers and influential emigrants from Homburg also shaped the history of the United States centuries ago.
An estimated 17 percent of Americans are descendants of Germans, many of whom were from the Saarland and an estimated 300,000 Palatinates also emigrated to the United States over three centuries. Some of these emigrants became rather famous, such as David Weber a pioneer of the wild west in the late 1800s.
During a stroll you can set out on a discovery tour of Homburg to learn a few fun facts and and gain interesting insights. For example, George Washington’s aide-de-camp
A historical inn (now Homburger Hof) built in 1906 can be the start of the tour at the “Rondell.” At the beginning of March 1945 the inn served as the U.S. Army Thunderbird Division headquarters. Later in July when French troops followed, they also used the inn as their headquarters and officers’ club. Kaiserstrasse, initially built by Napoleon, was used by both armies to liberate Kaiserslautern.
Strolling through Homburg’s old town you can catch a glimpse of the same architecture of first houses in New York when it was still named Nieuw Amsterdam.
The legendary German Royal French Infantry Royal Deux-Ponts regiment is closely connected with Homburg and America’s history. In 1776, the 13 states of North America revolted against the British crown under George Washington’s command. The Royal Deux Ponts regiment recruited soldiers in or near Homburg and was sent overseas in 1780.
During the Battle of Yorktown October 14, 1781, the regiment captured the important entrenchment “Redoute 9” forcing supreme commander Lord Cornwallis to surrender five days later. After the final British surrender in 1783, negotiations held in Yorktown between the enemy parties resulted in the United States finally being granted independence.
As thousands of soldiers returned to Germany in 1783, the Royal Deux-Ponts also brought with them the ideas of the American Revolution with far reaching consequences. Ten years later Louis XVI of France was executed, Karl II August fled from the advancing French revolutionary soldiers and his castle Karlsberg near Homburg went up in flames.
In 1786 John Trumbull visited the region and the impressions that he gained during his journey were written down in his autobiography, also complimenting the delicious potato salad in Saarland.
A further house was inhabited by Johann Georg August Wirth who published the legend-
among them. In 1852 he emigrated to the United States and became a strong supporter of the Republican Party, contributing to Abraham Lincoln winning the election by recruiting Germans to vote for him. Later he fought in the Civil War as Union general, along with thousands of other German soldiers, and was appointed Secretary of the Interior by President Hayes in 1877. When Carl Schurz died in New York in 1906, it was none other than Mark Twain who praised this significant “Forty-Eighter” posthumously.

ary “Deutsche Tribüne,” a democratic newspaper in 1832. Ludwig August Wollenweber who supported him was forced to flee and seek his fortune in the United States as many other democratic minded Germans, and founded the “Liberal,” a daily newspaper in Philadelphia. He later took over “The Democrat” which became the leading German paper of the East coast capital. In addition, he was engaged as correspondent for German newspapers and normally wrote in high German, but occasionally used Westrich dialect, very similar to Pennsylvanian Dutch.
“My home is where freedom is” was the slogan of thousands of emigrants that left Germany and found a new home and political freedom in the United States after the Revolution in 1848 when citizens stood up against Bavarian rule. Hinting at the March Revolution, they were called the “Forty Eighters” with Carl Schurz, who had lived in Homburg, being the most prominent one
Above: Plate marking the place where the Deutsche Tribüne was printed Below: Statues part of Homburg’s Freedom Fountain honoring the printers of one of the first German democratic newspapers.
Further Germans from the region had a strong influence on pre-civil war history. Thomas Nast emigrated in 1846 and quickly became a prominent political cartoonist and engaged himself in support of the Union. Abraham Lincoln described him as being the best “advertising medium” with his caricatures. Nast became an adamant supporter of civil rights and also created the two political symbols, a donkey for the Democrats and an elephant for the Republicans. The well-known Uncle Sam caricature stems from his pen and during the holiday season he would draw figures and created the first illustration of Santa Claus, inspired by St. Nikolaus from home in Germany.
Another Jewish-German emigrant Levi Strauss from Bavaria designed the first pair of “blue jeans,” initially intended as clothes built to endure anything. The denim pants quickly gained popularity and Strauss created a lifestyle trend for generations to come.
You might also discover a small plaque located at the former parsonage with the inscription “Carl David Weber,” who lived there from 1815 – 1836. In that year he emigrated to America and stayed in New Orleans for a short time. Later he went to St. Louis where he heard about a group of people heading west. After six months and close to starvation, the group reached California which was then still part of Mexico. He changed his name to “Don Carlos Maria Weber” and purchased a huge piece of land in 1847. The houses, stable and rodeo places were meant to attract settlers and in 1848 Mexico was forced to cede California and the gold fever set in. First named Tuleburg, he later renamed the town to Stockton, which later flourished as a significant industrial and cultural capital. Weber died in his own town in 1881 and is remembered to this day.
A further stop on the discovery tour is at the former town hall at the market square. Georg Müller, a soldier born in Homburg and member of the African Corps during World War II was a prisoner of war and transferred to Kentucky, where he discovered a copy of the New York Times Magazine, edition April 15, 1945. He was astonished to see a photo of weary civilians and determined U.S. soldiers standing on the steps of the building in his hometown, claiming “We take over!” He brought back the original magazine that is kept in the Homburg city archives.
There are many more unsung heroes, poets and pioneers that came from Homburg or the region. The Deutsch-Amerikanischer Freundeskreis Saarpfalz holds strong ties with Henrico County, Virginia, and organizes annual German-American events. Use the opportunity to explore and discover American traces for yourself wandering through the town.
As a pet-friendly community, we value the companionship that animals bring to our homes. This article serves as a friendly reminder of important guidelines and best practices for responsible pet ownership within KMC. Ensuring responsible pet ownership helps create a safe, clean, and enjoyable environment for all residents, both with and without pets.
» Registration and Licensing: Please ensure your pet(s) are properly registered with the Base Veterinary Clinic and Housing Office as required by Regulation. Up-to-date licenses and vaccinations are essential for the health and safety of your pet and the community.
» Leash Laws and Control: When outside your residence, all pets must be always kept on a leash and under your control. This is for the safety of your pet, other residents, and other animals. Leashes should be a reasonable length or retractable and used responsibly to prevent pets from approaching others without consent.
» Clean-Up After Your Pet: Cleaning-up after your pet is not only a courtesy to your neighbors, but also a requirement. Always carry waste bags and immediately clean up any feces left by your pet on lawns, sidewalks, common areas, or any other location. Properly dispose of waste in designated receptacles. Failure to do so can result in fines and other penalties.
» Barking and Noise Control: Excessive barking or other disruptive pet noises can be a nuisance to neighbors. Please take steps to manage your pet’s behavior and minimize noise disturbances, especially during early morning and late evening hours. Consider training, enrichment activities, or consulting with a veterinarian or animal behaviorist if you are having difficulty managing your pet’s noise levels.
» Pet Waste Disposal: Dispose of pet waste properly in designated pet waste stations or
trash receptacles. Do not dispose of waste in storm drains or leave it in bags on the ground.
» Pet Safety and Well-being: Ensure your pet has access to adequate food, water, shelter, and veterinary care. Never leave your pet unattended in a vehicle, especially during hot weather. Be aware of potential hazards in the environment, such as poisonous plants or extreme temperatures.
» Restricted Breeds (if applicable): Please be aware that KMC Housing may restrict certain breeds of dogs. If you own a restricted breed, you must comply with all applicable regulations, including muzzling requirements, increased liability insurance, or other restrictions. Breeds (crossbreeds) of dogs that are restricted or prohibited in Germany or are deemed “aggressive” or “potentially aggressive” are Pit Bull, American Staffordshire Bull Terrier, English Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Rottweiler, Doberman Pinscher, Chow, Tosa Inu and wolf hybrids. Therefore, these breeds are prohibited in family housing. Wild, farm or exotic animals are prohibited.
» Pet-Related Damage: You are responsible for any damage caused by your pet to the housing units, common areas, or the property of others. Please take steps to prevent damage and promptly report any incidents to the Housing Office.
» Reporting Concerns: If you have concerns about a neighbor’s pet or suspect animal neglect or abuse, please contact the Base Security/Military Police if you believe a pet poses an immediate threat to safety.
We appreciate your commitment to responsible pet ownership and helping to maintain a pet-friendly and respectful community in our KMC. By working together, we can ensure that our housing area remains a desirable place to live for all residents and their furry companions.

So you grew pumpkins this year. Or maybe you will buy some to decorate the house or yard. Don’t throw them out; use them for baking. With pumpkin puree, you can make great baked goods from bread to pies to muffins. Sure you can buy canned pumpkin from the store but fresh is better, healthier, and you’ll save money.
While we’re biased toward fresh pumpkin, quite frankly, in many recipes we have a hard time telling the difference between fresh and canned. And we often use commercially canned pumpkin for the convenience.
Most recipes call for pumpkin puree but that’s not the only way that you can use fresh pumpkin. You can grate fresh pumpkin and add it to your bread or muffins. It’s even good in a casserole or in a soup. Grated pumpkin will give you attractive flecks of orange in your bread or muffins and a little chewier texture. But since most recipes call for puree, here’s how to prepare it:
1. Cut a sugar or pie pumpkin in half.
(Some thin-walled pumpkins are stringy and not as good for baking.) Remove the seeds. Place the halves in a baking pan, flesh side down with 3/4-inch of water in the pan. Bake for 1 1/2 hours at 350 degrees or until the flesh is tender. (For small quantities, you can cook the pumpkin in the microwave.)
2. After the pumpkin has cooled, scoop the flesh out, place it in a food blender, processor, or your food mill and process it until it is smooth. If stringy filaments remain, strain it.
3. Often, especially from smaller or immature pumpkins, the puree will not be thick enough — a spoon should stand upright in the puree. To thicken, place the puree in a saucepan and cook, stirring often, until the puree becomes thicker. Use as you would canned pumpkin. Extra puree freezes well.
If you are in a hurry, you can cook your pumpkin in the microwave or steam it on the stovetop. Cooked this way, it seems to have
a higher water content than with baked. That’s okay but you will need to cook it down on the stovetop to remove some of the water — at least for some recipes.
In some recipes, it doesn’t matter whether the puree is thin. If you add a thin puree to a yeasted bread recipe, you’ll have to add a little more flour to compensate. That’s not a problem. If you are making pancakes, the thinner puree just means less water or milk to get the same consistency. On the other hand, if you are making cookies or scones or muffins, balance matters. You can add more flour or less liquid and it may turn out okay but you won’t know without trying.
In the following bread recipe, you may use a thinner puree. Just be prepared to adjust the amount of flour that you use to accommodate different moisture contents of the pumpkin purée.
Pumpkin Bread Recipe
This is a great pumpkin bread recipe! It has an attractive orange color, it’s moist, and it’s packed with nutrition and flavor. We usually make it with white bread flour but you can substitute whole wheat flour. (If you use all whole wheat, add several tablespoons of wheat gluten.) The recipe calls for raisins but walnuts make it a great pumpkin bread also.
This bread is not sweet like a dessert bread. You can add more sugar if you like. If you choose, add one cup of chopped walnuts. Incidentally, try this bread toasted with red current jelly. It is terrific!
Ingredients
• 5 1/2 to 6 1/2 cups white bread flour (you can substitute up to 3 cups whole wheat flour)
• 1/4 cup brown sugar
• 1 seven-gram packet of instant yeast
• 1 1/3 cup warm water, 110 degrees
• 1 tablespoon cinnamon
• 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
• 1 teaspoon ground ginger
• 1 cup puréed pumpkin or canned pumpkin
• 1/2 tablespoon salt
• 6 tablespoons melted butter
• 1 1/2 cups raisins, golden raisins, or currents
Directions
1. Place half the bread flour, sugar, and yeast in the bowl of your stand-type mixer. Add the warm water and beat with a dough hook until it is partially mixes. (The purpose of this mix is to hydrate the yeast.)
2. Add the rest of the flour, the spices, the pumpkin, the salt, and the butter. Knead with the dough hook at medium speed for four minutes. When the dough comes together, add the raisins and continue beating for the remainder of the four minutes or until the gluten is developed. You will likely need to adjust the moisture level either by adding flour or water. Place the dough in a greased bowl, turn once, and cover. Set the bowl in a warm place and allow it to double in size.
3. Grease two 9 x 5-inch loaf pans. Form two loaves, cover them, and let them rise until doubled and puffy.
4. Bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes or until done. The internal temperature should be at 190 to 200 degrees. Remove the loaves from the pans and let the bread cool on a wire rack.
Baker’s Note: The pumpkin in this bread makes it very moist. Pumpkin has a very mild flavor and acts as background for the spices and this has a mild bread combination of spices. Add more spices if you prefer.

Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe Public Affairs Office
MONS, BELGIUM — NATO and nations deployed additional multi-domain capabilities on the land, in the air and on the sea to defend the sky during the European Union and European Political Community summits in Copenhagen, Denmark, Oct. 1-2, following recent drone incursions.
“We have to keep our skies safe,” said NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in a press statement together with the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen ahead of a meeting of the College of European Commissioners in Brussels, Sep. 30, and ahead
of the EPC, which he attended.
The two-day gatherings in Denmark brought together EU leaders and more than 40 European heads of state or government to discuss a variety of pressing subjects, including those on security and defence, and support to Ukraine.
Denmark requested the additional support to secure the events, prompting immediate deployments from NATO’s Allied Air Command and Maritime Command.
On land, NATO dispatched a small team of ground forces and counter unmanned aircraft system capabilities from the U.S. to serve alongside troops and similar capabilities deployed bilaterally from other nations,
including France, Germany and Sweden.
In the air, U.S. Navy P-8 Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft surveilled the area.
Finally, between the North and Baltic Seas, NATO’s Standing Maritime Group 1 ship, FGS Hamburg (F220), a German Sachsen-class frigate, and the USS Bulkeley (DDG 84), a U.S. Arleigh Burke–class destroyer, both operating under NATO’s Baltic Sentry, a maritime monitoring activity, patrolled the Danish Straits along with Danish maritime units to defend the area from the sea.
“The USS Bulkeley represents a fraction of U.S. involvement in Baltic Sentry as Europeans continue to shoulder more of the burden for their own security,” said U.S. Army Col. Martin
L. O’Donnell, NATO’s Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe spokesperson. “More than 95 percent of the ships that have supported Baltic Sentry since it began in January are European.”
Several other Allies provided other support to Denmark in a national capacity.
While most of the capabilities returned to the control of their nations upon completion of the summits, FGS Hamburg remains in the area to support Baltic Sentry. That activity, alongside Eastern Sentry, continues to deliver even more focused deterrence and defence along NATO’s Eastern Flank, from the High North and Baltic Sea to the Black Sea, and beyond.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte arrived in Denmark on Oct. 1. His visit began with a meeting with Prime Minister Keir Starmer of the United Kingdom. In the evening, Mr. Rutte was received by Their Majesties King Frederik X and Queen Mary.
Mr. Rutte praised U.K.’s armed forces for “providing the hard power, not only for the defence of the U.K., but for the whole of NATO.” He also commended Prime Minister Starmer for his
leadership on Ukraine and for “making sure that Ukraine has all the weapons they need to stay in the fight, but also be in the strongest possible position whenever peace talks start.”
The following day, the Secretary General joined the European Political Community meeting in Copenhagen. He participated the plenary as well as a roundtable discussion with European leaders and the President of Ukraine Mr. Volodymyr Zelenskyy on security and resilience. He empha-
sised the pressing dangers from Russia, China, North Korea, and Iran, noting their efforts “to undermine us and tear up the rules-based order.” He urged greater support for Ukraine and enhanced defence production to counter escalation risks and deter aggression.
The Secretary General also held several bilateral meetings while at the EPC with Allies as well as partners, including the President of Moldova Ms. Maia Sandu and President Zelenskyy of Ukraine.

more efficient and timely refueling capabilities.”
POWIDZ, POLAND – Brig. Gen. John Stanley, deputy commanding general for the 21st Theater Support Command, and Maj. Gen. Dariusz Mendrala, inspectorate general for Polish Armed Forces Support officially opened a 1.5-million-gallon bulk fuel storage facility in Powidz, Poland, during a ribbon cutting ceremony, Sept. 25.
The ribbon cutting commemorated a key milestone in the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement between the United States and Poland, part of an expanding network of military infrastructure designed to bolster readiness for U.S., Polish, and NATO forces in the region. The new facility will enable U.S. and Polish Soldiers to rapidly process, stage, and project combat power.
“This is the first and largest of three bulk fuel storage facilities in the Polish Provided Logistics System spelled out in the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement between the U.S. and Poland,” Stanley said. “This is also the farthest eastward of the planned facilities. It will significantly increase flexibility of refueling options for sustainment personnel to provide combatant commanders with
Stanley also highlighted how the facility directly improves operational efficiency.
“The opening of this facility here on Powidz reduces our refuel supply lines by around 500 kilometers and reduces refueling timelines by multiple days. This also increases efficiencies by reducing cross-border paperwork delays and reducing the amount troops and hours driving in convoys on highways to deliver fuel,” he said.
Mendrala highlighted Poland’s growing interest in national defense.
“Our country has started an ambitious program of permanent modernization and the development of the Polish Armed Forces,” said Mendrala. “Today, we spend almost five percent of the gross domestic product on defense.”
According to Chief Warrant Officer 4 Larry Lyons, senior petroleum and water advisor for the 21st TSC, the EDCA outlines 19 facilities planned across Poland, each designed to strengthen modernization, readiness, and bilateral interoperability. The Powidz Bulk Fuel Facility is a major boost in the fuel sustainment piece that will give combatant commanders more options in peace or wartime
environments.
Following the ribbon-cutting, senior leaders from both nations toured the Powidz military installation and shared a lunch to celebrate their continued partnership.
“From the U.S. perspective, this is a huge partnership for us. The Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement has resulted in great things. Of course, this being one of the biggest facilities that we built today out of three planned only improves our planning and preparedness. We appreciate the longstanding partnership with Poland’s Armed Forces and this ribbon cutting is just a symbol of dedication to that partnership,” said Stanley.
According to the U.S. Department of State, roughly 10,000 U.S. troops are currently stationed in Poland. This increased American presence follows the signing of the EDCA on Aug. 15, 2020, which strengthened the permanent U.S. footprint in the country.
The EDCA’s primary goal is to create the conditions for defense capability development, defense planning, and joint military training. It defines three main areas of effort to improve Poland’s security, including infrastructure expansion and logistical support for U.S. troops stationed on Polish soil.

To give the figures their colorful appearance, a variety of pumpkins were used. The colors ranged from white to classic orange decorative pumpkins to blue pumpkins.

NOV. 12, 9.45 A.M. UNTIL EVENING, QUIRNBACH, KUSEL COUNTY
A festival for horse lovers and tradition enthusiasts – the Quirnbach Horse Market. Every year on the second Wednesday in November, the tranquil town in the West Palatinate region transforms into a lively meeting place. This is when the 500-person village literally gets its hooves churning. In the middle of the week, animal lovers, market visitors, and revelers from near and far flock to the town. The traditional Quirnbach Horse Market has a long history – since 1876, it has attracted around 15,000 visitors annually, making it one of the most important horse markets in Rhineland-Palatinate. The market begins early in the morning with the main attraction: the horse awards ceremony. Here, owners present their magnificent horses – donkeys are also welcome – to a jury of experienced judges. This event is particularly interesting for recreational riders. In addition, the awards ceremony is complemented by show acts to make the program as diverse as possible. Numerous stalls at the flea market invite you to stroll, discover, and enjoy everything from regional products to handicrafts to culinary specialties. Another highlight of the market is the traditional lottery, where attractive prizes can be won. The large festival tent provides a cozy atmosphere, where people celebrate together with music, Palatinate specialties, and drinks. The mornings are more traditional. Then, with brass music playing, the tent becomes a brunch-like affair. In the evening, there’s a lively party atmosphere. The Horse Market is more than just a market – it’s a place of living traditions where history, conviviality, and rural culture come together. The event is ideal for families, nature lovers, and culture enthusiasts who enjoy authentic Palatinate experiences in a rural atmosphere. It’s worth a visit – not just for equestrian fans!

Most of us associate pumpkins with colorful foliage, the arrival of autumn, Halloween celebrations and jack-o’lanterns, or even delicious pumpkinbased dishes. And, most of us will have some sort of a “pumpkin pal” during the colorful season.
Nowadays, pumpkins come in all shapes and sizes, from very small to enormous, round, orange or yellow, in the shape of large pears or tiny figures used for fall decorations. The world’s largest pumpkin weighed 2,749 pounds!
But, did you know that pumpkins have been around for thousands of years, but didn’t find their way across the seas to Europe until a few centuries ago?
Cucurbitaceae
Pumpkins belong to the Cucurbitaceae family and were among the first crops domesticated by indigenous peoples in what is now Mexico. Archaeological evidence places early pumpkin cultivation between 7,500 and 5,000 BC, with initial varieties being smaller and more bitter than today’s sweet orange types. Early Native Americans valued pumpkins for their nutrient-rich seeds and versatile flesh, roasting slices, drying and grinding the pulp into flour, and even weaving the dried rinds into mats or using hollowed shells as containers.
Pumpkins go abroad
European explorers in the late 15th century, most notably Columbus, encountered these New World gourds and carried seeds back home, maybe along with a friendly potato or a bright red tomato. While pumpkins struggled in cooler climates like
England, they thrived in warmer parts of continental Europe. The name “pumpkin” evolved from the Greek pepon (“large melon”) through French “pompon” and English “pumpion,” eventually settling into the pumpkin of American colonies by the 17th century. Initially viewed as a curiosity, the orange and yellow lopsided spheres transitioned from garden ornaments to valued food crops as colonists experimented with cooking and animal feed.
No Halloween without pumpkins
The carving of jack-o’-lanterns stems from an Irish legend about “Stingy Jack,” who tricked the Devil and was condemned to roam with only a coal-lit turnip for light. In medieval Ireland and Scotland, people hollowed turnips or beets to ward off haunted souls during Samhain, the Celtic harvest festival marking the end of summer. When Irish immigrants arrived in North America, they found pumpkins more plentiful and easier to carve, bringing about the classic pumpkin jack-o’-lantern. Over time, Halloween absorbed these customs — costume-wearing to confuse spirits, bonfires, and later trick-or-treating, where children in disguise visited homes for treats or pranks.
Nutritious, delicious and auspicious?
Pumpkin’s mild sweetness and creamy texture make it ideal for both savory and sweet dishes throughout autumn. All-time favorites include:
• Pumpkin soup: a silky starter spiced with nutmeg, cumin, or curry, finished with roasted pumpkin seeds for crunch.
• Pumpkin pie: the Thanksgiving classic combining a rich spiced custard in a flaky pastry shell.
• Pumpkin curry with chickpeas: a vegan main featuring coconut milk and Thai-
style yellow curry paste.
• Vegan pumpkin muffins: tender, plantbased muffins sweetened with canned pumpkin and warm spices.
• Pumpkin desserts: over 30 recipes including cookies, cakes, cheesecakes, and hand pies to satisfy every pumpkin craving. For inspiration, visit: https:// www.onceuponapumpkinrd.com/category/pumpkin-dinner/
Beyond these, pumpkin purée enriches breads, pancakes, hummus, lasagnas, and even smoothies. Roasted pumpkin seeds tossed in olive oil and sea salt make a nutritious snack, while pumpkin spice lattes and homemade creamers bring that signature flavor to your morning cup.
In Turkey, a sweet pumpkin candy is called kabak tatlısı, literally “pumpkin dessert.” It is made by coating peeled pumpkin pieces in sugar and letting them macerate — often overnight — so they release their juices. The pumpkin is then cooked or baked until tender and syrupy. It is traditionally served cold, garnished with tahini, clotted cream (kaymak), walnuts, or pistachios.
Germans also enjoy dishes with pumpkins, and aside from soup, some preserve pumpkins in jars as “Süß-sauer eingelegter Kürbis” (sweet-and-sour pickled pumpkin), which makes a tangy side dish or snack.
A popular variety is hokkaido, which originates from Japan’s northernmost island, Hokkaido. There it is called “kuri kabocha” in reference to its chestnut-like flavor. As it spread worldwide, cooks in the U.S. began calling it red kuri squash.
Hokkaido pumpkins show off a striking red-orange rind and a deep golden flesh. Unlike many winter squashes, their skin softens when cooked and can be eaten whole. The flesh offers a naturally sweet,
nutty taste that caramelizes beautifully under heat and is ideal for pumpkin soup, without having to peel the skin.
Let’s go pumpkin picking
If you are interested in harvesting your own pumpkin, two sites near Kaiserslautern offer great opportunities. Sunshine Pumpkin Farm (Bauernhof Guhl) in Gerhardsbrunn lets you select and harvest your own pumpkin directly from the field and has a special event day on Oct. 12. Hitscherhof in Maßweiler has a “Hofladen” where you can buy fresh produce, including pumpkins, and even try a variety of dishes made with pumpkins throughout the season. In addition, most farmers’ markets around the area also have a wide selection of pumpkins and pumpkin-based dishes to spice up the season.
The 2025 Pumpkin Exhibition at the Baroque Castle in Ludwigsburg (near Stuttgart) will take place until Nov. 2. This year’s theme is “Grand Cinema.” Visitors can look forward to a magical world with over 450,000 pumpkins depicting famous movie characters.
Last, but not least: If you still haven’t had enough of pumpkins, stop by the Gartenschau in Kaiserslautern and visit this year’s exhibition. It has over 45,000 pumpkins under the theme “fire.” A variety of pumpkins were used to give the figures their colorful appearance with colors ranging from white to classic orange decorative pumpkins to blue pumpkins.
Whatever you do, whether it’s carving, spicing up your roast, munching on a delicious cake, or sipping a pumpkin latte, enjoy your favorite pumpkin along with the colorful season!
from the C-130Js arrives at the shop for a complete teardown. The team deflates, dismantles, inspects and cleans every component before determining whether it can be safely reused.
“It’s busy, nonstop work,” said Senior Airman Jack Mueller, 86th MXS repair and reclamation journeyman. “The wheels come in dirty, covered in oil, mud and rubber, so we make them spotless before paint or rebuild happens. It’s dirty work, but we take pride in keeping the shop itself clean and organized. It’s a ‘clean as you go’ shop.”
If a wheel passes inspection, it is reassembled and pressure-tested overnight to ensure integrity and returned back to the U.S. Air Force supply system. Assemblies that fail inspection are removed from circulation, ensuring that unsafe parts never reach an aircraft.
Last year alone, the Wheel and Tire shop restored 67 wheel assemblies, valued at more that $1.5 million to the supply system. The team also identified 30 unserviceable wheels during inspection, preventing potentially dangerous components from returning to flight.
“We’re the filter that ensures only safe, airworthy assets make it back onto the aircraft,” Smith said. “It’s our responsibility to make old parts new again while maintaining the highest safety standards.”
The C-130J relies on both main and nose wheel assemblies for operations, each one must meet precise standards before returning to service. Through coordination with other maintenance sections such as nondestructive inspection, sheet metal and metals technology, the team ensures each part is fully mission-capable.
Their efforts also save the U.S. Air Force significant time and resources. Without Ramstein’s in-house capabilities, the wing would have to source wheel assemblies from other bases delaying missions by increasing transportation time and costs.
“We minimize downtime by keeping the process here on station,” Smith said. “ That means aircraft get what they need faster and the mission keeps moving.”
Each wheel the team restores supports not only the 86th Airlift Wing’s mission but also the readiness of USAFE-AFAFRICA operations across Europe and Africa.
U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Christopher Smith, 86th Maintenance Squadron noncommissioned officer in charge of the Wheel and Tire Shop, inspects a C-130J Super Hercules main wheel at Ramstein Air Base, Oct. 1. The precise work of the Wheel and Tire Shop supports the 86th Airlift Wing’s ability to launch aircraft safely and on time.

I am often asked exactly how to calculate ones housing allowance when purchasing a home overseas. Generally along with this question comes the misunderstandings of what they have been told by others. Some have said that your Living Quarters Allowance is based on how much your actual mortgage is.
Others note it is based solely on what your allowance is for your pay grade.
Maximum OHA: €1400/month
Utility allowance: €703€/month
At the time of this writing the maximum allowance for an E-7 in the Kaiserslautern area of Germany was €1400 per month for housing plus an automatic payment of €703 per month for utilities. This amount may have changed.
When someone buys a home for €240,000, the military will pay the mortgage via their OHA for 10 years. The easiest way to calculate this is to know that there are 120 months in 10 years. With that being said, you can simply divide the purchase price of €240,000 by 120.
you will see that she will take €1375 per month.
This less than her cap of €1670. If her goal was to maximize her OHA, she would need to buy a more expensive home.
Example 3
GS 11 with 1 dependent
Purchase Price: €300,000
Maximum LQA: $49,000 per year or $4,083 per month
for this example.
€300,000 / .732 = $409,836
Once we have the dollar figure for this purchase, we are able to calculate the monthly allowance in the same manner as for military members, but in USD. $409,836 / 120 = $3415 per month
This leaves him with $668 per month remaining in his LQA to cover utilities. These calculations have nothing whatsoever to do with the financing amount of your home or the monthly loan payment. You could pay cash for your home and you would still receive this allowance based on these calculations.
Hopefully, I can explain how your allowances are calculated which will clarify the rumors.
Keep in mind the base of these calculations is the same for both Active Duty Military and Civilian Employees. The difference between the two is that the military member’s OHA is left in the foreign currency and converted for each pay period based on that period’s exchange rate and the Civilian’s LQA is converted back to U.S. Dollars at the time of the purchase. This means the military member’s USD payment will fluctuate with the currency exchange while the civilian’s USD payment will be fixed on their exchange rate at the time of purchase. So a military member will always get paid just the right amount to cover their calculation each month while some months a civilian may make extra money with other months coming up short. Historically this has balanced out to where the civilian does not notice these ups and downs through their course of ownership.
Example 1
Active Duty E-7 with dependents
Purchase Price: €240,000
€240,000 / 120 = €2000
This member would be allowed to take €2000 per month for the purchase of the home. Since the allowance is €1400, the allowance will be maxed out and pay €1400 per month for 10 years. As the military member progresses in rank, the monthly OHA can increase up to the calculated maximum of €2000 per month.
In addition to this €1400 per month, the member will automatically take the €703 per month utility allowance.
Example 2
Active Duty O-4 with dependents
Purchase Price: €165,000
Maximum OHA: €1670 month
For this example we will use a civilian that receives LQA. He is a GS-11 with 1 dependent that receives $49,000 per year. This is different than a military member because his allowance is offered in USD rather than Euro.
Utility Allowance: €703 month
€ 165,000 / 120 = €1375 per month
An O-4 with dependents buys a home for €165,000. She has a cap of €1670 per month plus €703 for her utilities.
By using the same formula as in example 1 (purchase price / 120)
The first thing that is done is his purchase price is converted from USD to Euro based on the date of the purchase. The conversion of .732 will be used
There are many other aspects to be discussed regarding the OHA/LQA regulations and what costs can be included. This article is meant simply to show the basis on which these calculations are made.

What does GACO has to offer?
Lots and lots of useful and free advice!
Whether you need assistance to navigate through German bureaucracy, waste separation or traffic issues — the
bilingual staff of GACO will help you in every way possible. There is no issue too small or too big for us.
The GACO is also an official cooperation partner of the “Welcome to Rheinland-Pfalz” (WIR!) initiative. The program is sponsored by the RheinlandPfalz state government to provide information in English about regional events and services in the participating villages to help you get settled quickly in your local area and enjoy everything fun that is waiting for you out there!
Beside supporting military and civilian members of the Kaiserslautern Military Community, the GACO-team
provides information to high-ranking visitors from Ramstein Air Base, the U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz, the Kaiserslautern city and county administration as well as Rheinland-Pfalz state government representatives. It serves as an important linking point for the German and U.S. side. This makes the GACO the only facility of its kind worldwide. The staff has developed an extensive network of contacts within the local administration, businesses and associations.
GACO wants you to feel at home in the KMC - let us help you settle in!
attractions. Being located right next to Germany’s underrated Harz Mountains, it also offers plenty of outdoor activities – and some incredible leaf-peeping in the autumn. Best of all, the town feels kind of like a secret. Which makes it ideal for travelers, whether you’re new to Germany or you’ve been here a while.
There is a lot to love about Halberstadt’s Old Town. For starters, it offers some of the most beautifully preserved half-timbered houses and winding alleys in Germany – which is saying something, especially since so much of the city was destroyed during the second world war. Compared to larger cities, there are fewer shops, cafés, and restaurants: there are also fewer tourists.
Halberstadt also offers an excellent farmer’s market, which is held Tuesdays and Fridays (with the occasional Thursday tossed in) through the beginning of November. Never fear, though. Halberstadt’s incredibly charming Christmas market begins in late November (the 25th this year) and runs through December 23.
The Old Town also holds Halberstadt’s cant-miss Cathedral, which is (rightfully) considered one of the most beautiful Gothic churches in the country. Simply touring the interior of this nearly 800-year-old cathedral offers a humbling and sublime experience. A visit to the cathedral’s treasury, which holds more than a thousand mostly medieval relics, tapestries, and other treasures, is highly recommended.
Halberstadt’s Great Outdoor Opportunities
One of Halberstadt’s claims to fame is as a gateway to the Harz Mountains. Often overlooked in favor of the Alps, the Harz is a heavily wooded, ancient mountain range that offers some incredible exploring opportunities, as well as some of Germany’s most gorgeous autumn scenery. Plenty of beautiful routes are available in the forested hills just south of Halberstadt. Many trails are accessible by foot from the city.
One of the coolest outdoor adventures involves a trip to the Sandhölen, which are kind of what they sound like — sand caves. The Große Sandhöhle (which is the big sand cave) is not to be missed. It is like a giant outdoor wonderland for basically everyone. Sand to play in, rocks to scramble on, caves to explore — and all set in the middle of a lovely forest. As a bonus, the sand caves are just a quick hike away from Regenstein Castle, which is imposing, explorable, and overall worth a visit.
A Fun Bonus: Oldest Giant Wine Barrel in the World
Okay, so Germany is no stranger to wine barrels, or even to giant wine barrels (see Bad Dürkheim or Heidelberg Castle, for example). But, man, if you have the chance to see a giant wine barrel, you shouldn’t miss it!
Halberstadt’s version does not disappoint: It holds 144,000 liters, which is the equivalent to 192,000 bottles of normal wine. And it is old, having been brought to life in 1594. Despite its massive size, finding the barrel requires a bit of an adventure. It lives in the cellar of the restaurant Jagdschloss, which is located in Halberstadt’s lovely Spiegelsberge Landscape Park.
Getting to Halberstadt
By car, Halberstadt is 4.5 hours from Kaiserslautern, 3.5 hours from Wiesbaden, and 5 hours from Stuttgart. Check with Deutsche Bahn for train options.
