Swift Response 25 demonstrating allied strength: C-130s deliver US, Spanish paratroopers to Latvia

86th Airlift Wing

The 37th Airlift Squadron conducted airlift operations in Latvia May 13 - 17 as part of Swift Response 25, a multinational exercise aimed at testing NATO’s ability to deploy forces quickly across Europe.

SR25 is one of three major exercises under DEFENDER 25, an annual U.S. Army-led deployment and training event with 29 participating nations conducting exercise response operations and increasing interoperability alongside Allies and partners.

“It was really great to work with our NATO allies in Latvia and from Spain. We were able to work with a lot of the host nation loading and unloading our aircraft and coordination for the ground movements there,” said Capt. Patrick Halloran, 37th Airlift Squadron chief of tactics.

a leading role in commemorating this historic milestone through music, remembrance, and partnership events across the continent.

As Europe marked the 80th anniversary of Victory Day for WWII, the U.S. Air Forces in Europe – Air Forces Africa Band played a leading role in commemorating this historic milestone through music, remembrance, and partnership events across the continent.

The USAFE Band’s ensembles connected with thousands of Europeans in England, France, Germany, and Czechia to honor the legacy of Allied sacrifice and celebrate eight decades of peace and partnership.

“Music has a unique power to bridge cultures, commemorate shared sacrifice, and celebrate enduring alliances,” said Lt. Col. Rafael Toro-Quinones, USAFEAFAFRICA Band commander. “This week’s performances honored our common history and strengthened bonds with partners and communities who continue to uphold the values of freedom and democracy.”

On May 3, the USAFE-AFAFRICA Concert Band delivered an evening concert at Fritz Wunderlich Hall in Kusel, Germany, for the town’s mayor and local community members, celebrating U.S.-German ties.

In Czechia, the USAFE Band’s

rock ensemble, Touch ‘n Go, interacted with audiences on May 2 with a public outreach concert at Tachov Castle and student engagements at Konservator Plzen and Gymnazium Lud’ka Piky.

The visit culminated in Pilsen on May 4, where Touch ‘n Go closed the city’s Liberation Festival with a high-energy concert in Republic Square. More than 3,500 people attended, including 150 descendants of U.S. liberators who freed Pilsen from Nazi occupation.

On May 6, a six-member ensemble performed alongside the Royal Air Force Band at a commemorative street party hosted by the

U.S. chargé d’affaires in London, drawing in guests and passersby to commemorate the end of World War II in Europe through a shared cultural moment.

In Paris, the USAFE Band joined musicians from U.S. Army Europe and Africa and Naval Forces Europe for a multinational military band performance during a May 8 ceremony at the Arc de Triomphe. The ensemble then marched down the Champs-Élysées alongside French children, veterans, and international bands from France, the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, and Cameroon in a jubilant parade reminiscent of the spontaneous celebrations of 1945.

“It’s been an honor to partake in such a historic occasion and represent the United States,” said U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Brad Green, section chief of resources for the USAFE-AFAFRICA Band. “To perform in locations where so much history unfolded is a profound reminder of the sacrifices made — and the responsibility we carry forward.”

Through every performance with Allies and partners, the USAFEAFAFRICA Band serves as a reminder that peace is built not only from military strength, but through the collective commitment to mutual respect and freedom.

SWIFT RESPONSE 25 from Page 1

“We were able to have a joint mixed formation of Airbus A400Ms’ and C-130J Super Hercules. We got to experience the similarities and differences of how our NATO partners operate which was really great to see.”

This exercise involved High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems Rapid Infiltration training, a field hospital exercise, live-fire exercises, and five near-simultaneous airborne insertions across five countries: Latvia, Lithuania, Sweden, Finland and Norway.

The “Blue Tail Flies” focus during SR25 was delivering equipment and approximately 900 paratroopers from the Spanish Airborne Brigade and the U.S. Army’s 173rd Airborne Brigade to training areas in and around Riga to support joint airborne operations in Latvia.

This exercise aimed to demonstrate the U.S. Army’s credible combat power to rapidly deploy and maneuver U.S. and Allied airborne forces across the High North and Baltics, reinforcing the ability to secure key terrain along NATO’s eastern flank through Joint Forceful entry.

“Joint forceful entry is a direct delivery of an airborne army unit to a specific location, usually heavily fortified, to seize territory,” said Halloran. “We also worked with the Latvian nationals to make the airdrops happen, we ended up dropping about 109 total jumpers into a drop zone in Latvia.”

SR25 brought U.S., Allied and partner forces together to improve joint readiness and coordina-

tion, building trust between the nations involved. This not only strengthened partnerships, but also increased readiness for any future contingencies.

U.S. and Allied paratroopers conducted integrated jumps, highmobility infiltration training, and rapid airfield seizures enabled by the 37th AS’s aircraft and crews. Their support included low-level tactical flying and airdrop resupply and troop transport. These events highlighted critical capabilities in adverse environments coordinated with NATO and partner units on the ground.

The 37th AS’s participation demonstrated U.S. resolve to deliver combat power with speed and precision, reinforcing the Air Force’s commitment to defend NATO Allies and deter aggression. SR25 proved Allied forces remain lethal, ready and capable in a dynamic security environment.

“It was awesome to represent the 86 Airlift Wing in this large exercise like this and it was really a testament to what happens when we work together as a joint force and how much of a force multiplier working with our allies and partners is,” said Halloran. “Being able to use and grow our NATO relationships to deliver an effect like we did with SR25 and get those practice reps in is crucial so that when it’s game time, we’re ready and all on the same page and same team working together.”

SR25 supports the broader goals of DEFENDER 25, reinforcing NATO’s collective defense and the U.S. commitment to regional security.

U.S. Army paratroopers assigned to 1st Squadron, 91st Cavalry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade receive a jumpmaster parachute inspection during Exercise Swift Response 25 at Riga International Airport, Latvia, May 17. The 173rd Airborne Brigade is the U.S. Army Contingency Response Force in Europe, capable of projecting ready forces anywhere in the U.S. European, Africa or Central Commands’ areas of responsibility. Demonstrating global deterrence and the U.S. Army’s ability to rapidly deploy U.S.-based combat power in Europe and the Arctic region alongside Allies and partners, DEFENDER 25 brings U.S. troops together with forces from 29 Allied and partner nations to build readiness through large-scale combat training from May 11 to June 24. DEFENDER 25 increases the lethality of the NATO alliance through large-scale tactical training maneuvers and long-range fires, builds unit readiness in a complex joint, multinational environment and leverages host nation capabilities to increase the U.S. Army’s operational reach. During three large-scale combat training exercises — Swift Response, Immediate Response, and Saber Guardian — Ally and partner forces integrate and expand multi-domain operations capability, demonstrating combined command and control structures and readiness to respond to crisis and conflict. 435th CRG hosts AFSOC for validation of USAFE-AFAFRICA’s first landing zone surveyor training course

For the first time in the unit’s history, Airmen assigned to the 435th Contingency Response Squadron hosted U.S. Air Forces Special Operations Command to validate their landing zone surveyor course at Ramstein Air Base, May 12-21.

After months of planning and development, the course was officially aligned with AFSOC standards, thus enabling the 435th CRG’s training plan to sync with the lead major command. This course ensures synchronization with Department of the Air Force regulations while bolstering readiness for real-world missions.

“This is a cornerstone capabil-

ity for the 435th CRG,” said Tech. Sgt. Joshua Griffith, 435th CRS lead cadre of training and air traffic controller. “We’re the sole surveyors for U.S. Air Forces in Europe - Air Forces Africa. Without this training, we can’t legitimately execute one of our most critical tasks, which is opening landing zones during contingency environments.”

Students learned to conduct comprehensive landing zone surveys by applying both classroom instruction and hands-on fieldwork over eight days. The curriculum included identification of suitable landing zones, glide slope analysis, obstacle clearance, and terrain assessment to safely accommodate a variety of aircraft.

Once students acquired the necessary skill-set, they applied their knowledge by surveying and establishing a landing zone in response to a simulated earthquake scenario at Spangdahlem Air Base, Germany.

“The hands-on training was definitely my favorite part,” said Staff Sgt. Joseph Nealon, 260th Combat Airfield Operations Squadron radar airfield and weather system technician. “I came into this with zero experience in landing zone operations. Now I have a strong foundational understanding of aircraft require-

ments, ground integrity, and realworld mission application.”

Master Sgt. Cory Dodge, the course administrator and 435th CRS operations flight chief, spearheaded the course development after he recognized and identified a gap in compliance.

“We realized that we had been operating out of compliance with the governing regulation for years,” said Dodge. “Rather than ignore it, we brought it to leadership and AFSOC’s attention. This was about doing things the right way, even if that meant calling ourselves out first.”

Handpicked for their diverse backgrounds, the cadre consisted of engineers, air traffic controllers and airfield managers, each bringing specialized knowledge to the course. Griffith, described by Dodge as “the most tactical air traffic controller in the Air Force,” played a vital role in translating complex airfield operations into digestible training modules.

“This course teaches not just compliance; it teaches precision,” said Griffith. “Whether for humanitarian relief following a disaster or forward-deployed operations in hostile environments, accurate landing zone data ensures aircraft can arrive safely and efficiently. That’s the foundation of our mission.”

Now validated by AFSOC, the landing zone surveyor course represents a pivotal change for the 435th CRG. It will serve as the official training pipeline for members of the USAF’s sole Contingency Response airborne airfield assessment team, responsible for being the first boots on the ground for contingency response airfield opening.

“This isn’t just a checkbox for us,” said Dodge. “This is the difference between being mission capable or not. Now, when our team is called upon to open an airfield in a war zone or a disaster-stricken region, they’ll have the training, validation, and confidence to do it by the book and at the highest standard.”

Looking forward, the 435th CRS plans to keep the course internal to train its replacement personnel but remains open to expanding it to operationally relevant units within the theater for professional development and interoperability.

“This course sets a new standard,” said Dodge. “We’ve invested in the future of this wing and the safety of the missions we support. The validation isn’t the end, but the beginning of a stronger, smarter, and safer way to project airpower anywhere in the world.”

U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Cory Dodge, 435th Contingency Response Squadron operations flight chief, presents Staff Sgt. Caleb Lewis, 424th Air Base Squadron air traffic controller, with a certificate after landing zone surveyor training at Ramstein Air Base, May 21. The course will serve as the official training pipeline for members of the CRG’s airborne airfield assessment team, responsible for being the first boots on the ground in any contingency response.

21st TSC helps recovery efforts physically, emotionally

On March 25, U.S. Army Soldiers piloting an M88A2 heavy vehicle sank into a swampy area six miles outside of Pabrade, Lithuania, which has been a training hub for allied forces for many years.

For more than seven days, hundreds of Soldiers from multiple NATO allied nations converged on the area to help with recovery efforts.

In the midst of the menagerie of moving machinery operated by Soldiers determined to physically recover their brothers in arms, another team mobilized to help with a different specialized type of recovery.

A three-person traumatic event management team assigned to the 254th Combat Operational Stress Control Medical Detachment, a subordinate unit of the 30th Medical Brigade, arrived and immediately began assisting Soldiers who were affected psychologically due to the vehicle incident with team and individual grief counseling.

The 254th COSC is one of four active duty units of its type in the U.S. Army that deploys to augment

behavioral health support as needed. Their mission is to sustain the warfighter and to sustain lethality through medical readiness.

“Primarily, the force health protection mission is to sustain the warfighter and helps everyone remain fit for duty and medically ready to serve,” said Capt. Matthew Camporese, a psychologist and the behavioral health officer in charge of the COSC Det.

“Almost immediately, once we arrived, we were providing two different types of services to the affected Soldiers, to include individual grief counseling and also traumatic event management,” said Camporese.

Traumatic event management is a service that is provided at a unit level and targets all affected unit members. We run a series of groups divided into different ranks. During those events, a forum is provided for Soldiers to discuss the event’s impact on them. They also talk about how they grieve, and they tell us and each other what their needs are. The philosophy behind all of these events is that these group sessions help build unit cohesion and help them help themselves through the event and the grieving process, according to Camporese.

The mission of the COSC is to provide unit resilience when times are tough. Through a self-referral campaign, events can also be viewed as a practice in individual and collective strength as well.

“When an event like the March 25 vehicle incident occurs, the affected unit’s medical providers identify and track who is asking for mental health assistance, and then they will connect those service members with our team,” said Camporese.

A COSC team operates in a team of three: an officer in charge/ behavioral health officer, a noncommissioned officer in charge, and a junior Soldier, who are all behavioral health specialists. Each member of the team has unique individual assigned duties to accomplish.

The NCO and the junior Soldier can operate independently as long as the COSC OIC certifies them to do the specific functions needed.

“Behavioral health specialists function under the provider’s license. So, with us heading out there under Captain Camporese, we are effectively an extension of him. As long as we have been trained on whatever tasks he is going to conduct, then he swears off on us con-

ducting the tasks. That is how our three-man team can cover more ground,” said Sgt. Tristan Jarriel, the COSC team chief and NCOIC.

According to the COSC members, the mission gives them a direct and immediate sense of impact and meaning.

“This job is meaningful on the professional level because we are completing the mission and doing the jobs we are trained to do. On a more personal level, there is a direct impact to providing this mission; it is fulfilling to help Soldiers in such a direct way,” said Camporese.

“I think it is a really tough mission set. When you see something on the news, you see it and think that it is sad because it hasn’t personally affected you. When you show up on a scene and you work with the unit and can see the look on everyone’s face when you speak directly to them, it makes everything feel more real because you are living in it,” added Jarriel.

According to Jarriel, the affected Soldiers of the 1st Battalion, 41st Field Artillery Regiment, and the 5th Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment were impressive for their insightfulness and were exceptionally hard working.

The three-man COSC team

learned from the experience and their takeaway lessons are to be prepared for any reaction and the diversity of reactions that Soldiers can have through an event like this.

“This particular mission is unique. It is a tragedy that impacted a lot of people and no one saw coming. What was most challenging for me was hearing and learning that what had befallen the Soldiers was a result of their own dedication to their job,” said Camporese.

According to Camporese, doctrinally when TEM is taught in the Army, this is a textbook example of what it looks like and it’s rare to be presented with this mission. It was an occasion to use those skills in the way they were meant to be used. A typical mission set for a COSC to conduct a TEM mission is a readiness and prevention-based mission set.

“We have a specific program called Holistic Resiliency Training, and the mission set that falls under that is preparing the Soldiers with psychoeducation to take care of themselves under stress, like living in austere environments or combat or operational mission environments,” said Camporese.

Father’s Love

The Landstuhl Regional Medical Center Blood Services Program partnered with the 86th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron at Ramstein Air Base, May 14-15 to provide real and simulated blood products in support of the Defender Europe 25 exercise.

The theater-wide exercise, hosted by U.S. Army Europe and Africa, provided Army and Air Force medical personnel from LRMC and Ramstein Air Base the opportunity to demonstrate their medical expertise and skills.

As the central repository for military blood products and supplies in the European theater, the LRMC Blood Donor Center prepared more than 1,000 real and simulated blood products for transport via U.S. Air Force aircraft. Once loaded, the blood products were then transported to Lithuania for use by U.S.

military medical forces taking part in the Defender Europe 25 exercise.

According to military medical officials, fresh whole blood is a vital component in increasing the survivability of trauma patients in the combat environment. A U.S. military report estimates that 15 to 20 percent of traumatic deaths are preventable, and 66 percent to 80 percent of these deaths occur from hemorrhage.

“Providing both real and simulated blood products is crucial for supporting real-world contingencies and the fighting military force,” said U.S. Army Sgt. 1st Class Raymond Clark, noncommissioned officer-in-charge of the LRMC Blood Services Program.

“Real blood ensures immediate availability for transfusions during combat casualties, addressing critical needs for volume resuscitation and oxygen-carrying capacity.”

“Simulated blood products, on the other hand, play a vital role in

training and preparedness,” added Clark. “They allow medical personnel to practice life-saving procedures in realistic scenarios without depleting limited real blood supplies. This dual approach ensures readiness, improves medical skills, and ultimately enhances the survivability of our Soldiers on the battlefield.”

Military medical officials emphasize that properly equipped and trained medical teams are essential for maintaining a strong and effective fighting force.

Defender 25 is the largest annual U.S. Army deployment into the European Theater consisting of approximately 25,000 U.S Allied and Partner service members, 29 Allied and partner nations, 18 host nations, 14 different aerial ports of embarkation in the U.S., movement of 3,000 pieces of equipment and more than 5,000 U.S. based troops processed into the European Theater.

USAG Rheinland-Pfalz hosts first-ever pre-command course, preps commanders, first sergeants to lead in complex theater

Eighteen soon-to-be company commanders and first sergeants came together to lay the foundations for successful leadership during U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz’ first-ever Company Commander and First Sergeant PreCommand course on Kleber Kaserne, Kaiserslautern, April 28 to May 2.

The weeklong course was designed to prepare incoming company-level commanders and first sergeants for their new roles, with instruction grounded in Army doctrine and information tailored to commanding at one of USAG Rheinland-Pfalz’s 28 geographically separated sites, according to USAG Rheinland-Pfalz Command Sgt. Maj. Raymond Wrensch. Previously, the course was only offered in Bavaria for Europe, prompting USAG Rheinland-Pfalz leaders to develop a localized offering.

The course curriculum is based on Soldier readiness data, research into reoccurring community challenges and commander’s risk assessments, making it tailorable to changing Soldier needs and command priorities, Wrensch said.

Throughout the week, participants learned about command leadership and company operations and management, participated in panels with garrison leaders to discuss leadership development topics and put their leadership skills into practice through practical exercises. They also heard from USAG Rheinland-Pfalz Soldier and family readiness service providers, who detailed the programs and services the garrison offers.

“This approach allows leaders to understand and visualize the layers of perspective from the theory of command, down to the readiness of the newest Soldier in their formation,” Wrensch said.

Capt. E. Alexander Perez, Headquarters and Headquarters Company commander for the 44th Expeditionary Signal BattalionEnhanced, said that what made the course so valuable for him was “connecting with people in the garrison who will be essential partners,” during his time commanding in Baumholder.

“Building those relationships with leaders and service providers will be incredibly helpful,” Perez said. “The course connected the big

picture — command — with the realities on the ground, right down to the readiness of each individual Soldier.”

Master Sgt. Josh Matienzo, noncommissioned officer in charge of the Primary Care Division at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, agreed.

“The fact that the pre-command course was hosted here in Rheinland-Pfalz and attended by those that serve in the same community allowed conversations and information to be centric to our purview,” he said, adding that the course participants spent time throughout the week discussing issues that will impact their day-today success as leaders.

Master Sgt. Hermina Fobare, Deployed Warrior Medical Management Center senior enlisted advisor, said that while this wasn’t the first time she attended a first sergeant course, the USAG Rheinland-Pfalz offering stood out by demonstrating how to apply the course information.

“There is only so much you can learn from a regulation. Situations are not always black and white,” she said. “The instructors added their real-world experience to how the Army regulations or processes are to be applied, which gave me insight on how to better handle certain situations as a leader.”

Capt. Bethany Kaseman, Medical Readiness Command Europe occupational therapy lead, said the course gave her the skills she will need to build healthy command processes and workflows as she takes command.

“I walked out of the course confident that I could set my calendar for the first 30, 60, 90 days for success, with the right tools to identify the needs of my unit, and the points of contact that I needed to succeed.”

The next iteration of the Company Commander and First Sergeant Pre-Command course is already in the planning stages for August and will be offered quarterly, serving not only the garrison’s own Soldiers, but leaders from 11 major tenant unit commands and numerous other units across the garrison’s 28 sites.

Hand, foot and mouth disease: What parents need to know

A rash on the palms and soles is a common sign of hand, foot, and mouth disease.

It starts with a fever and a cranky child, and then you notice the skin rash on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet — all tell-tale signs of Hand, foot, and mouth disease. And while unpleasant, officials at Public Health Command Europe want to assure parents that the disease is generally not serious.

Hand, foot, and mouth disease is a common, contagious viral infection, particularly in children under five years old. While cases can occur year-round, they often see an increase in the spring and fall, especially in regions with fluctuating climates like those across Europe. Recent reports indicate a slight uptick in cases across several European countries in the past month.

The virus is characterized by sores in the mouth and a rash on the hands and feet. It’s highly contagious and spreads through direct contact with an infected child’s saliva, sputum, nasal mucus, or even fecal matter. This can happen by touching contaminated surfaces like toys, tabletops, or doorknobs.

HFMD is particularly common in child-care settings where toddlers and young children frequently put their hands in their mouths, and where diaper changes and potty training are common.

Importantly, adults can also carry and spread the virus, sometimes without exhibiting any symptoms themselves. This can contribute to ongoing transmission.

If you suspect your child has Hand, foot, and mouth disease, PHCE generally advises parents to

keep their child home during the initial days of illness to minimize exposure to other children.

“Unless the child has a fever, there’s no strict medical reason to exclude them, as the virus can be spread for weeks and a significant number of those infected show no symptoms, making blanket exclusion ineffective,” said Public Health Nurse Consultant Lt. Col. Simeon Smith from Public Health

Command Europe.

However, individual schools and child care centers may have specific guidelines for return-to-care, particularly if there’s a localized outbreak. Parents should always check with their child’s facility for their specific protocols.

Symptoms of HFMD include:

• Fever

• General feeling of being unwell

• Sore throat and loss of appetite

• Painful, red, blister-like spots on the tongue, gums, and inside of the cheeks

• A red rash, which can blister but doesn’t typically itch, on the palms, soles, and sometimes the buttocks

While completely preventing spread in very young children can be challenging, parents are encour-

aged to reinforce good hygiene practices. Remind children to cover their mouths when coughing or sneezing, and strictly enforce handwashing with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Regularly disinfecting frequently touched items (like toys) and avoiding close contact — such as kissing, hugging, or sharing eating utensils or cups — with infected individuals will help mitigate the spread of the virus.

ABC IN KMC: One hundred

One hundred

One hundred may only be a simple number when it comes to pure math. But, it can also stand for a hundred things you can do or see, experience and discover in Kaiserslautern and beyond. This also gives ample reason to report and write about a hundred different themes. Since the creation of the “ABC in KMC” series in April 2023, we’ve given insight to an array of topics from A to Z that might inspire you to venture out and learn more about your home away from home.

You might be interested in learning about German traditions such as Advent or Allerheiligen. You may wonder why you keep coming across Barbarossa in Kaiserslautern or would want to discover fascinating facts about Germany’s capital Berlin.

Celts, their history and relics in the area could be an exciting topic or possibly activities in colorful fall. Historic events such as the Day of German Unity have deep symbolic meaning in Germany, while the Docu Center in Ramstein is full of history of U.S. presence in the area. Dahnerfelsenland or Donnersberg nearby are well worth visiting for exciting adventures.

E nergetic e lephants may cross your path in Enkenbach-

Alsenborn, or you may stumble across the making of elaborate E aster e ggs. F un-f illed Kaiserslautern wouldn’t be K-town without its fussball (soccer) and its stadium named after its celebrity Fritz Walter. Ever wondered about the fish?

The Gartenschau with dinosaur park and changing exhibitions throughout the seasons is always worth a visit, or you might be inspired to learn more about Gutenberg and his invention of the printing press. If you’re into tracing your roots, the Institute for Palatinate History and Ethnology could be the place to seek valuable information on genealogy. Hildegard von Bingen is a prominent character known to be the founder of scientific natural history and the Hambacher Fest is considered to be the “cradle of German democracy.”

International Women’s Day has a long history of innovative and brave women, while Isidor Straus from Otterberg may have put smiles on the faces of female shoppers at Macy’s Department store. The Japanese Garden is an oasis of solitude and beauty right in the heart of the city, while historic Jewish traces can also be discovered throughout the town. The concept of Kerwe may be new to you, but you may be inspired to join in the fun at one of the many village festivals in summer

and fall. The Kaiserbrunnen, located at the end of the pedestrian zone Steinstrasse in Kaiserslautern, tells a story of its own and might cool you down on a hot summer’s day! Or, would you like to know how Kaiserslautern got its nickname?

Landstuhl’s last knight Franz von Sickingen is an iconic character, but you may also be interested in learning more about the town and castle itself. A visit to Rheinland-Pfalz’s capital Mainz can be quite inspiring, and you may even encounter Anton and his friends, the most prominent TV cartoon figures from the city.

The Mehlinger Heide, one of the largest heather fields in southern Germany, is just down the road and has an interesting background as a maneuver ground.

A road you’ve most likely driven down at one point or another was built by Emperor Napoleon, and once it becomes foggy and gray in late fall, you might appreciate a few cozy November notions.

Discovering a few crazy facts about the infamous October Fest in Munich can be a fun pastime and finding out why it takes place in September. Looking into the Abbey Church in Otterberg, the second largest sacral building in Rheinland-Pfalz, can offer a glimpse into history, also discovering the builders of the picturesque semi-timbered buildings.

According to records, about

300,000 people emigrated from the Palatinate region to the United States, and many of them have preserved their language as Pennsylvania Deitsh, similar to the dialect spoken in the area. You might be surprised that Gutenberg ended up in poverty despite inventing the printing press, promoting literacy and the Protestant Reformation.

A short making of the weekly periodical may also spark your interest, learning all about quality quill and the number of staff it takes to do the chore. Romans in and around Trier shaped the history of the region and the city has a remarkable link to Istanbul. Ramstein-Miesenbach is the union community with the highest number of U.S. residents within the KMC.

Spaghetti ice-cream is a popular and refreshing dish in summer and was invented by an Italian immigrant in Mannheim. But, the creative mixture is also symbolic of a diverse cultural society in Germany. You might be looking for a cool dip in summer taking a nice splish-splash at one of the swimming opportunities in the K-town area. And, did you know that Germany has a whole family of sister cities in the United States? Any time of the year, you might feel the urge to take a walk on the wild side at Betzenberg Wildpark and experience domestic forest

animals. Or, maybe you would rather find out how Teddy went to America? There is a unique Army installation named 23rd Kaserne in Kaiserslautern, which you may have passed by several times without realizing it. Most union communities have a vivid history and a few surprises to go along with it. Valiant violinist Anna played an important role when it comes to a renowned concert hall in Kusel and the Völklinger Hütte, an old ironworks near Saarbrücken, has developed into a UNESCO World Heritage Site with various cultural offerings. Feel “Willkommen in Rheinland-Pfalz” with numerous organizations helping to pave your way. Also, learn why you should beware of witches on April 30. Moving towards the end of the alphabet, there are quite a few things in the area associated with the exotic letter “x.” Curious? Last, but not least, you may be wondering why the town of Yorktown, Virginia has a special historic link to the city of Zweibrücken.

If we’ve spiked your curiosity and you’re interested in learning more about any topics mentioned above and more, such as German traditions, heritage, a little history about your town and cultural specialties, check out any of the other 99 articles at: www. kaiserslauternamerican.com, and search “ABC in KMC.” Happy reading and exploring!

UNTERWEGS

ESCAPE EVASION AND REMEMBRANCE

MARCH, JUNE 6, 6 P.M., WALDSEE-KASEMATTE/ETSCH

A must-experience 24-hour and 100-kilometer march for those interested in history. The start will be in Waldsee (about 1 hour from Ramstein AB) with the finish at the Maginot Lines at Kasematte Esch in France. There you will find a bunker complex with museum where the U.S. Army fought a hard battle in the last days of WWII. The march, in the style of a 100-kilometer escape and evasion march, is in remembrance of all soldiers, regardless of their nationality, for the sacrifices made, during the 80th anniversary of the end of WWII.

German service members will walk side-by-side with civilians in this 24-hour challenge. The German Landeskommando of the Bundeswehr advertised the march and many have already registered.

They cordially invite American service members and civilians of the Kaiserslautern Military Community to participate in the name of international understanding. If 100-kilometers are too long, shorter routes are also possible. Marching together in remembrance is the main pillar of this project/challenge.

Four paratroopers will jump at the start and the mayor of Waldsee will also join and release 12 white “Pigeons of Peace.” Further information and registration at: erik.wieman@gmail.com (English speaking).

39th Transportation Battalion Change of Command, Change of Responsibility

The 39th Transportation Battalion held a change of responsibility and command ceremony at the NCO Field on Daenner Kaserne, Kaiserslautern, on May 16.

Soldiers, families, and friends honored Command Sergeant Major Kenyon Brown and Lieutenant Colonel Sean Donahoe as they relinquished their responsibilities and command of the 39th Transportation Battalion to Command Sergeant Major Teneka Stephens and Lieutenant Colonel Michael Watkins, respectively.

Master Sergeant Emmanuel Bour passed the colors to Command Sgt. Maj. Brown, who then passed them to Lt. Col. Donahoe, symbolizing the relinquishment of his responsibility and authority. Lt. Col. Donahoe then passed the colors to Command Sgt. Maj. Stephens, entrusting her with the responsibility and authority for the soldiers’ and families’ health, welfare, and readiness.

Command Sgt. Maj. Stephens returned the colors to Master Sgt. Bour. Lt. Col. Donahoe and Command Sgt. Maj. Brown gave departing remarks, followed by welcoming remarks from Command Sgt. Maj. Stephens.

Command Sgt. Maj. Kenyon L. Brown, a Detroit native who enlisted in 2000, holds a bachelor’s degree and numerous military qualifications. His assignments include XVIII

Airborne Corps and 593rd Expeditionary Sustainment Command. A veteran of three Iraq and two Afghanistan tours, his awards include multiple Bronze Stars and Meritorious Service Medals, along with foreign decorations and the Order of Saint Christopher.

“This battalion doesn’t just move materials; you move USAREUR-AF forward,” said Command Sgt. Maj. Brown. “You make the impossible happen, and you do it day in and day out, without fanfare. Just boots on the ground, hearts in the fight, and engines running.”

Command Sgt. Maj. Teneka S. Stephens enlisted in 1999 as a motor transport operator. Her recent roles include 19th Expeditionary Sustainment Command Distribution Management Center Sergeant Major and United States Transportation Command Senior Enlistment Advisor. Her assignments encompass various transportation units and staff positions, with three combat tours to Iraq, one to Afghanistan, and a peacekeeping tour in Kosovo. Her numerous awards include multiple Meritorious Service and Army Commendation Medals as a Sergeant Audie Murphy Club member. She holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees.

In a separate part of the ceremony, Command Sgt. Maj. Stephens passed the colors to Lt. Col. Donahoe, who then passed

them to Colonel Matthew Alexander, 16th Sustainment Brigade Commander, symbolizing the relinquishment of authority. Col. Alexander then passed the colors to Lt. Col. Watkins, charging him with the authority to command. Lt. Col. Watkins returned the colors to Command Sgt. Maj. Stephens. Col. Alexander and Lt. Col. Donahoe gave remarks, followed by welcoming remarks from Lt. Col. Watkins.

Lt. Col. Donahoe’s early career involved transportation roles in Germany, followed by command and staff positions as a captain and a Joint Chiefs of Staff internship. He subsequently served with the 7th Special Forces Group and at United States European Command, specializing in NATO and nuclear planning. A veteran of two deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, his awards include the Bronze Star and Meritorious Service Medals, the Saint Christopher’s Medal, the

Nijmegen Cross, and the Order of Saint Maurice.

“Command Sgt. Maj. Stephens, you were selected by the Army through decades of growth, maturity, and sacrifice to get here. Make it count,” said Lt. Col. Donahoe.

“You make the impossible happen, and you do it day in and day out, without fanfare.
Just boots on the ground, hearts in the fight, and engines running.”

Lt. Col. Michael Watkins, a Virginia State graduate commissioned in 2007, holds two master’s degrees. His early service included a deployment to Iraq. He commanded the 295th Quartermaster Company and served at the National Training Center and Army Logistics University. Later assignments included the 21st Theater Sustainment Command and the 39th Transportation Battalion. From 2022 to 2025, he served at USEUCOM in Stuttgart. His awards include the Bronze Star Medal and multiple Meritorious Service Medals. He is a recipient of the Order of Saint Christopher.

Built as a villa for residents by the architect Paul Schultze-Naumburg, the Schloss Freudenberg (https://www. schlossfreudenberg.de/) is rich with Wiesbaden history.

During World War I, the villa was used as an Officers Club for the French Army. Around 1920 the city acquired the castle and then closed it in 1931. After World War II it was acquired by the U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden and then later served as the Rod and Gun Club for U.S. Military personnel. The castle was turned over to the United Pentecostal Church in the 1970s, then fell into disrepair due to vandalism and fire after the church left in 1984.

Thanks to the Society of Nature and Art in 1993, the castle was restored to as it is known today. This group of artists and educators had a vision to help visitors develop the senses and the mind through art and culture.

Some describe the castle as a laboratory where you can experiment and be involved. I agree with that description, because walking into the castle was like walking into another world where you can touch, explore and connect with your senses. I have been to science museums in the States. The difference is that this one is more homemade and has a strong ‘think outside of the box’ mentality.

Things to do outside

There is so much to do on the beautiful park grounds even before going inside. There are hands-on stations, an amazing playground, a climbing wall and a barefoot path. The first station we stopped at we were able to paint a special wish on a ‘wishing stone.’

Then to explore and give a great lesson to children about the power of the sun, there was a magnifying glass that actually burned wood!

Around the corner there is a huge playground area with balance games, stilts, swings and climbing logs. (Note to self: stilts are much harder than they look!)

Things to do inside

After embarrassing myself enough with the stilts, it was time to go inside. When first walking into the castle, you will see curious minds of all ages exploring the area. Children were making their own candles, adults were playing with chimes and we were making waves from the friction of our hands. This was all happening in one room!

The café and gift shop were also on the first floor. Serving delicious homemade treats and coffee, the café had unique charm with fake (hopefully) giant ants coming out from a corner on the ceiling.

Absolutely loving the gift shop, I was able to buy some very cool items for good prices.

Visitors can also touch and try out each instrument, puzzle and gemstone in the gift store.

The top floors had so many amazing and creative stations

to explore, including pendulums used in so many ingenious ways.

Also upstairs we exercised our olfactory (relating to smell) memory. We covered up cards and tested whether we were able to recognize the scent. I was very surprised how uncanny the scents were. Some of the scents will trigger a memory, just like when you smell a certain perfume and are immediately reminded of someone you know now or from your past.

Downstairs visitors are able to explore experiments with light and dark, including playing with shadows and more. You can also go into a completely blacked out hallway and then enter the “Dunkel Bar” (Dark Bar) as if you are blind. Sorry there are no image of the Dark Bar… just close your eyes! The Dark Bar can be booked for groups, team events, etc. I would enjoy a work meeting in here,

because then no one can see me nodding off!

There are more stations involving touching and vibrations. To me more like a trust exercise, you can put your hands in the clay pots and try to guess what is inside. After watching so many episodes of Fear Factor, I was a little reluctant to put my hand inside. Of course it turned out that I was fine!

Near that station there was a room filled with sand and a couple of metal circles on poles. By stroking a bow, designs are created from the sound waves that are made.

The grand finale of our visit to Schloss Freudenberg was the ice room, in which we found a good place to cuddle. For my 4-year-old, we were going into the “Elsa” room (in reference to the Disney movie “Frozen”)!

In this chilly -22°C room, you can look at a magnified snowflake garden as well as see an ice creation where only one drop of water is added each day. The staff member who conducted the class without a coat, and like Elsa, said that ‘the cold never bothered her anyway’!
