Mike ExecutiveLarsonDirector

I will close with this quote from Benjamin Franklin who knew a few things about aging - “When you are finished changing, you are finished.”

In pondering this question, I referred to a source I have not used before, the website “Tiny Buddha”. I found a wonderful article on staying young. The article defined youth as how you look and youthfulness as how you feel. We spend a tremendous amount of money on strategies to maintain our youth, but none of them can turn back the clock. Maintaining youthfulness is a different story and the article suggested three ways to stay youthful.
I can’t explain, every time I thought about that song my mind went to another aging rock star’s vocals, Roger Daltry of the Who. I kept thinking of the line from My Generation, "I hope I die before I get old." That didn’t work out for Roger, who is 78 years old and still touring. So, maybe both of them were thinking less about staying young, and more about being youthful.

Forever Young
OCTOBER / NOVEMBER 20224
WELLNESS
May you have a strong foundation: Here are four strong foundations for health.1.Prioritize Sleep: Sleep
May your feet always be swift: Much of staying healthy and feeling young is achieved by moving your body. It is recommended to get up and move every hour. Dancing is a great option. (That is unless you add alcohol, a lamp shade for a hat and a table top!!) It can boost your cardiovascular health, build core strength and can help prevent memory loss to name a few. Dancing lessons can be a great option. If being in public or a crowd is not your thing, you can dance alone!
HEALTHY IS WELLNESS
May your hands always be busy: Keeping your hands busy keeps your brain healthy. Neuroscience shows that active hands stimulate your brain to produce chemicals that balance emotions and lower anxiety. We are at our best when we enjoy a healthy dose of activity. My Dad feels his best in the garage working on a project. One of those projects is his 1939 Packard which he has restored to almost perfection. What project are you willing to start or finish today?
Thankfully, we chose Billings Clinic.

- Megan, Mary’s daughter
When we arrived, the team told me that my mom was having a stroke. They immediately got her in for a thrombectomy to remove the clot.
To learn more about Mary’s story, please visit billingsclinic.com/mary.

When the winds of changes shift: Having friends and family you can lean on in times of tough change is important. Having people to celebrate good changes with is important as well! Having support increases our sense of belonging, improves our self-esteem and emotional wellbeing.
5www.allianceyc.org // Adult Resource Alliance

“My mom, Mary, is my biggest supporter and my biggest fan. The morning of her stroke, something felt di erent. God was telling me something was Iwrong.checked
May your heart always be joyful: This line is my favorite. There are many things that make my heart feel joyful. Star gazing, wading in an ice-cold river or lake, making snow angels, being with my dogs, Sharing a good meal with friends and family. Doing yoga (especially with my grandsons. Amazing but rare). What makes your heart sing? Do more of that!
And… May You Stay Forever Young: You can feel young, no matter what your actual age. Being youthful is not just for the young. It’s for everyone! On the days you feel like a million bucks (or at least $100,000) what did you do? What actions can you take to feel your best?
Be willing to stay forever young!
May your song always be sung: Unlike Bob Dylan, most of us do not have a recording contract or people lining up to sing the songs we’ve written. But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t sing!! Put on your favorite song and sing along. Research shows that music can boost memory, lighten your mood, reduce anxiety and depression, and lessen fatigue & pain. It also has the power to connect us.
A nurse came out and called my name, and it was one of the scariest and best parts of my life. I immediately asked, ‘Is my mom okay?’ And she said ‘yes’ with a big smile.

My mom always taught us to give thanks in all things. Now I appreciate how much of a miracle she is and how grateful we are for Billings Clinic.”
improves your brain performance, mood and overall health. 2. Eat well: Enjoy more whole foods and less processed foods. 3.Stay calm: Remaining calm improves heart health, blood pressure and quality of life. Practicing meditation is one method. 4. Find your Rhythm: Look for routines that work for your body to promote healing and regeneration.
on my mom and that’s when she told me she couldn’t move her legs. I rushed over and took her to the Emergency Room at Billings Clinic.
FIND BALANCE
6. Gradually build up to standing up 10 times, rest for one minute and then do 10 more repetitions.
Rain Dow, RiverStone Health Home Care supervisor and physical therapist, recommends cross-body activities, like diagonal arm raises with light 2- or 3-pound weights to help maintain your ability to reach overhead. This is a good exercise to decrease risk for osteoporosis.
STAY STRONG
Rain recommends activities that support strength and balance, such as sit-to-stands without using hands.
Here’s how:
Experts at the National Institutes of Health recommend that adults do strength training for all the major muscle groups, two or more days a week. Use small amounts of weight to start. Stop immediately if you have pain. Add more weight slowly over time. Use smooth, steady movements to lift weights. Keep knees and elbows bent to avoid locking your joints. Don’t hold your breath during strength exercises.
Varied exercise is key to maintaining strength, balance and flexibility so we can keep driving, dancing, carrying groceries and grandkids. RiverStone Health Home Care professionals offer these ideas for combatting agerelated changes.
2. Breathe in slowly. Lean forward and slightly shift your weight to the front of your feet.

4. Stand and pause for a full breath in and out.
For balance, Corey Bummer, RiverStone Health Home Care physical therapy assistant, often works with patients who are prescribed this standing exercise:
OCTOBER / NOVEMBER 20226
2. Stand with one foot halfway in front of the other.
CHANGE UP YOUR EXERCISES TO feel younger
5. Breathe in as you slowly lower yourself back to the chair.
3. Breathe out as you slowly stand up. Try not to support any weight with your hands.
FOR YOUR HEALTH
1. Sit toward the front edge of a sturdy chair.
1. Stand on a flat, hard surface where you can hold onto something (like a counter) with your feet together. That narrow stance may be harder to maintain than you think. Practice this pose until you can do it for 10 seconds without holding onto anything. Then, you may gradually progress through these other balance stages.
BE FLEXIBLE
• Routinely practice toe and heel raises while standing at the kitchen sink to support ankle mobility.
3. Stand with one foot in front of the other (heel to toe).
7www.allianceyc.org // Adult Resource Alliance
Work regularly on strength, balance and flexibility, so you can enjoy more freedom of movement at every age.
5. Stand on one leg while turning your head to the side.
• Practice seated hamstring stretching to maintain hip flexibility. Gently reach toward your ankle while seated. You should feel a stretch the back of your thigh.
Your goal can be to do each of these exercises for 10 seconds without holding onto anything. Maintaining balance is crucial to being able to step and walk safely, thus preventing falls.

4. Stand on one leg.
• For your posture, stand against a wall with your head, shoulders, hips, and feet touching the wall. Pretend someone is pulling a string from the top of your head, and extend your spine. If you don’t have shoulder pain, bring both arms directly above your head.
Maintaining flexibility keeps us healthy and mobile, says Krista Meier, RiverStone Health Home Care physical therapist. She suggests giving attention to three key areas: spinal mobility and posture, shoulder movements and ankle flexibility.

It really should come as no surprise that volunteering has its health advantages. Who doesn't feel good when they help someone else? So next time you see a chance to volunteer, take it and run with it.

Volunteering Makes You Feel Younger and Healthier, a New Study Suggests. by Ann Cieslik

Commit a few every other week (only 5-6 hours a month) to being a Pantry Pal; a personal grocery shopper who helps a senior by doing their grocery shopping for them.
How can this be possible? The study doesn't provide definitive answers, but the researchers have a few ideas as to why this correlation between health and volunteering exists. First of all, there's the mental health aspect. It's already been proven that volunteering has a positive impact on your mental health and that in turn plays a big role in how you physically feel.

There are times in our lives when we seek adventure, we feel the need to change things up, maybe cure some of the boredom of everyday life. When she was fortysomething, Cheri Chevalier of Billings was drawn to the invigorating sport of whitewater kayaking. She wanted to learn the basics, so she joined the local Beartooth Paddlers Society and took some lessons. From then on, she was hooked. Even though it was mostly a man’s sport at that time in the early 1990’s, she was invited along for the downriver excursions. From surfing the Maytag hole on the Yellowstone to slalom racing in Rock Creek at Red Lodge, Cheri embraced the varied experiences of “dancing with the water.”
of change have shifted, but Cheri’s heart remains joyful. Although the days of whitewater thrills are in the past, it doesn’t stop this amazing woman from hopping into her boat to explore our local lakes and ponds. Cheri’s pure enjoyment of the water always sets off youthful smiles and giggles from her, boosting her boating companions’ spirits, and keeping all of us “forever young.”

Cheri went on to master the sport and passed on her skills to many students over the course of three decades. Even today, as a septuagenarian (“seventy-something”), she is always ready to share her passion for paddling with anyone who asks her to help them learn how to

My own father's concession to understanding the thoughts and struggles of his son was to install a radio in the cab of our International tractor. I could listen to the music and chatter of my youth and make up my own mind, while “working summer fallow” on our dry land Montana farm. As I look back, I have an even greater appreciation for what my “tractor seat time” taught me about work and life in general.
light summer reading I'm working my way through an English translation of Adolf Hitler's “Mein Kampf”. Our friend Patty operates the Bookmobile and she found it for me. She didn't even look over the tops of her glasses when I asked for it.
Montana has been a State since 1889 and there have been a number of times when the voters here have shocked the Nation with our clarity of thought and conviction of purpose that is as clear as the Big Sky itself. Maybe it's time to set Washington on its ear once again with a refreshing approach to their stale old "lather, rinse, repeat" disfunctionality. Don't forget to vote in November!
Are there similarities in this book to our world today? Certainly. Young Adolph perfected the nastiness of name calling and denigrating everyone who isn't “one of us”. He capitalized on appealing to the firestorm of emotions we ALL came through in Jr. High. Those months, and maybe years of puberty were when we all felt picked on, we all thought we were singled out by our so-called friends and we all yearned for an advocate. Almost all of us quickly adapted the tools necessary to comfortably move on through life, but for some that sting of rejection can still be felt years later, whether real or imagined. It seems to me that the current trend in politics is to haul the junk out of our own musty, moldy basements and throw it on the neighbor's front porch. One political party is just as guilty as the other and it only leads to everyone having a smelly front porch. Fortunately, that's not really the kind of neighbors we aspire to be, so there must be a reasonable solution.

Our theme for this issue is Bob Dylan's Forever Young. Dylan's music has roots in the Folk Music of the late '50's and early '60's, but he really caught a toe hold in the evolution of the Folk-Rock music that shaped (and divided) a generation during the Vietnam Era. Forever Young was a lullaby written for Dylan's oldest son, who was seven years old in 1973. The first line is reminiscent of an Old Testament blessing, familiar to many. The next is a derivation of the Golden Rule, which is a cornerstone of all the world's major religions. The chorus ends with a lament and Dylan's implicit wish for something better for his son.

Tending the summer fallow and keeping the weeds out was directly correlated to how next year's crop would fare. Do the work now and next year could be incrementally better but conversely, don't do it now and next year would be worse. So, I went around and around, day after day and thought about where my life might take me. It was akin to making sun tea in a gallon jar. You couldn't pick the moment when it was done, but it was ready when you

That being said, I do not know why some people experience a long life while other lives are too short. I do not know why some must endure disease or disability, and others do not. I do not know why aging, or the passing of time, seems to be so heartbreakingly difficult for some, while others seem to enjoy inexplicable good fortune. While I do know that all of us walk in darkness from time to time, I do not know the reasons for suffering – except for that it must mean something.

THE VALUE OF CHANGE
CAREGIVER SUPPORT PROGRAM
Change AND THE UNLIVED LIFE
“Look around you. There’s stream and life. Flowers and trees, and frogs. It’s all part of the wheel. It’s always changin’, it’s always growin’. Like you, Winnie. Your life is never the same… One day you’ll grow up, you’ll do somethin’ important… And then, one day, you will go out – just like the flame of a candle. You’ll make way for new life. That’s a certainty. That’s the natural way of things. And then, there’s us. What we Tucks have, you can’t call it livin’. We just… are… we’re like rocks, stuck at the side of the stream. Listen to me, Winnie. You know a dangerous secret. If people find out about the spring, they’ll trample all over each other to get to that water. There’s one thing I’ve learned about people. Many will do anything – anything – not to die. And they’ll do anything to keep from livin’ their life… Don’t be afraid of death, Winnie. Be afraid of the unlived life.”
What does Angus mean by the unlived life? What does it mean to really live? I believe he means to be willing to live and embrace life in all of its forms. To not be afraid of the change or uncertainty it will surely bring. And through it all, to find meaning in what you do and how you live your life.
LIFE, IN ALL FORMS, MEANS SOMETHING
desirable. During that time, I began to seriously consider what aging meant, and the value of the decades that (presumably) stood between me and those I cared for. I realized that being young meant something, or at least it seemed to. I remember some of my residents who could sit for hours in a recliner by the window in their rooms. I often wondered if the past was what they were staring at, even if their memory was weak. I wondered if they would still consider their lives to be meaningful. If diminished capacity and lost independence was the kind of future any of us had to look forward to, then what was the point? Why was it necessary to experience this part of life, in this way?
I still cannot answer that question entirely, but on the way to work this morning I saw a beautiful sunrise and was reminded of something. I wouldn’t know the beauty of that sunrise unless I also knew of the darkness that preceded it. I would not recognize the warmth of the sun without the cool of night. I would not see the stars as clearly without the darkness, and I wouldn’t know to savor the mere minutes of that early-morning pink sky if it was meant to last all day. Life is like a day, everchanging and meant to be appreciated and admired in each moment, even as the light fades.
When I consider the meaning of “forever young,” I am reminded of the movie “Tuck Everlasting” (based on the children’s novel by Natalie Babbitt). It tells the story of the Tuck family, who unknowingly drink from a spring that gives them eternal life. Immune to age, disease, injury and death, the Tucks find themselves in a reality where time simply doesn’t exist. Eventually, their paths cross with Winnie Foster, who becomes the only other (living) person with whom the Tucks entrust their secret. When this happens, the family patriarch, Angus, issues a warning to Winnie. The following excerpt is from the 2002 film adaptation:
I admit I didn’t always see the meaning of age in my time as a caregiver, or a kind of life that Angus Tuck implied was worth living, but I do see it differently now.

Through it all, we are taught to be a different person. Difficulty allows our very natures to be changed, and to reach a place beyond ourselves that we didn’t know was possible, and then to share our light with others. If we weren’t capable of change, like the Tucks, maybe we would still value life, but probably not in the same way.

CONCLUSION
I remember significance in many small moments. I remember it in the pride Lucy took wearing lipstick every day, or jewelry that matched her blouse – even though she wasn’t going anywhere. I remember Gloria’s love of cats, and sitting with her as she anxiously waited to see if the mailman would deliver a letter from her “boyfriend.”
All I can figure is that my life is somehow enriched by these small moments, shared with these people, as a result of the change their lives endured – the life they lived, the light they shared. I can’t quite articulate it, but I feel it. They are a part of me. I recognize it just as I do the shifting light of day. They shine brighter at certain times, but they are always there, even in the darkness. They have given me light.
I remember feeling her disappointment on the days she didn’t receive one, and the excitement on the rare days she did. I remember it when I gave Rebecca her rosary every night after helping her into bed, and in Annie’s love of the color pink. For some reason, I remember all of these things.
The Tuck family knew what it was like to live free of the restrictions of time, or the uncertainty of change. While none of us have access to a spring of eternal life, I imagine that if such a thing did exist, most of us would at the very least consider drinking from it. There is something within each of us that desires certainty –an assurance that our life will have as little suffering or inconvenience as possible, and yet still mean something. It’s as if we’re willing to believe this is possible. But to believe this, as Angus Tuck knew too well, would be to deny the truth. It would be to deny the existence of light and darkness – things that we rely on to intricately experience every moment life has to offer.
So for you, what does it mean to really live?

Here it is October. Summer has come to an end and it’s time to enjoy all that fall has to offer. Remember, when you were younger, raking leaves and then running to jump into the pile? From the cooler temperatures to the leaves changing and dropping, fall is a glorious time. It’s also time to get those flu shots. We have scheduled a flu and COVID clinic with RiverStone Health. It will be held October 6th from 11:00-12:00. If you’re coming in for a vaccination, why not stay for lunch? Come join Linda, Nu, and the regulars for a delicious home cooked meal. Lunch is served at noon.

On Tuesdays, we have a nice turn out for chair yoga at 1:00. Don’t forget Pinochle on Thursday afternoon. Friday is our biggest day of the week, and we play bingo after lunch. Please remember to sign up the day before for a meal.
Have a wonderful fall! It is my favorite season…no more Inmosquitos!closing, I am including a stanza from Bob Dylan’s Forever “MayYoung.God bless and keep you always May your wishes all come true May you always do for others and let others do for you” Mary

MEAL SITE UPDATES
We had the pleasure of a session with a personal trainer, which we enjoyed very much. Hopefully, we can follow through with the exercises that he left with us.
We try to stay joyful with lots of activities. In September we had a carnival with fun games, great prizes, and special treats. We would love to have you join us for lunch and conversation, as well as enjoyable song in your heart!

We at the Worden meal site try to stay forever young, at least at heart. Our monthly visit from the nurses at Riverstone help us to stay healthy and alert.
