Ray received his first Meals on Wheels lunch on October 22, 2018. He was living in an apartment in the basement of rundown house on the outskirts of Billings. He was referred to the program by a neighbor who was worried about his health. When Al (the Meals on Wheels Driver) got to his house, the door was unlocked and Ray called for him to come in and down the steep stairway into his small, dark room. Ray was thrilled to both receive the meal and have someone to visit with.
After Al left, he worried about Ray, and wondered if there was something else that could be done to help him. After a few weeks of receiving Meals on Wheels, Al told Ray about the RIDES Program where, if he qualified, he could receive rides from certified program volunteers. Ray isn’t able to drive himself and doesn’t have access to other means of transportation.
Ray became a different person week by week. His nutrition improved with healthy meals, his interest in his community increased, and his feelings of isolation and loneliness decreased as he was able to get out and visit with others.
Through his involvement with the programs, volunteers, and staff at the Adult Resource Alliance, Ray found a new place to call home. It was bright, warm, and most of all safe. Ray’s quality of life improved dramatically. After a month or so, he called and said he was able to pay part of the cost of his meals. In six months, he called and said he was cooking again, and no longer need Meals on Wheels. This is a huge win!
It would be wonderful if Ray’s outcome was the norm. it isn’t. And that is ok. However, in just about every case, a participant’s physical health and social connection is improved, many times, dramatically.
If financially possible, Meals on Wheels participants are asked to consider a $4.00 donation for a meal that costs over $12.00 to prepare. Some can pay but many cannot pay the full amount. Some can’t pay anything at all.
Ray continues to use the RIDES program. He is so full of life. Each and every time he calls, he has a new joke for us.
The Adult Resource Alliance can’t stop the aging process. As Ray aged, he needed help with his basic needs. Meals on Wheels and the RIDES Program provided this help; Ray’s life improved dramatically. There are many other seniors who need YOUR help so they can receive these vital programs and services that improve their health, help them regain some independence, and get back the connection to their community that they thought was gone forever. With gratitude,
Judy Hughes Development Director

P.S. We are facing an increasingly aging population in Yellowstone County. One in three Yellowstone County citizens is over the age of 60. By working together, we can continue to provide Meals on Wheels, RIDES and the many other programs and services essential to seniors in our community.
