EXECUTIVE UPDATE This may seem like a silly question, but what does the term “senior” mean? One example we all recognize relates to school, high school or college senior. How about an example from the world of politics, as in “John Tester is Montana’s senior Senator’ Mike Larson which denotes his tenure. A Executive Director very good friend of mine is the senior Pastor at his church, meaning he is in a leadership position. For most of people reading this article the first thought would be a representation of age, as in senior citizen. So exactly what age do you need to reach to be a senior?

AARP, an organization most view as serving seniors, primarily focuses on those over age 50, although younger folks can join. Medicare benefits start at age 65 for most people. To qualify for full benefits from Social Security the number was 65 for years, but now progressively is moving up to age 67. The “Older Americans Act,” first passed in 1965, targets those 60 and older for programs provided through

Federal funding. This isn’t just an academic discussion.

Access to benefits, eligibility for various programs, and even the application of certain laws designed to protect seniors are all based on someone picking a number. Picking that number can have profound impact. In 1935, the year social security was authorized for those 65 and over, the average life expectancy was 60 years old. Now, some 80 years later, the average life expectancy is 79, but Social Security eligibility is between 65-67 based on your current age.

Ok, so I don’t want to take this discussion too far, but we here at the Adult Resource Alliance have been talking about this in relation to the name of this publication, the Senior News. Yes, the primary audience has been and will be in the 60+ population. But, similar to AARP, many of the topics we hope to cover in upcoming issues are relevant to those in their 50’s, or even younger. So, does the name Senior News keep those younger folks from picking up a copy and reading an article? All of this has led to discussions about changing the name of the publication. Over the next month we will be posting some potential names on our Facebook page. We are hoping to get some input from all of you as we think this through.

Healthy is Wellness Health Coach: Becky Ketterling, Certified Personal Trainer

Nourished BY NATURE Many of us from Big Sky Country grew up on family farms and ranches or in small towns.

As kids, we didn’t know the term ‘green space’ nor Becky Ketterling it meant Certified Personal Trainer, what Health Coach – we just knew Healthy Is Wellness, Inc. our moms were always shoo-ing us out the door saying, “Go outside and play!” And that’s what we did. We walked on grass in our bare feet; we put our fingers in the dirt; we climbed trees, and we ran through sprinklers.

We didn’t need scientific studies to tell us that nature was good for us; we felt it!

We are instinctively drawn to the world outside our windows and deep down, we know why… Nature simply makes us feel better. Even so, it’s easy to lose touch with this simple fact. Consider that Americans spend about 87% of their time indoors and another 6% in vehicles. That adds up to an alarming 93% of our time inside and only 7% spent outside! So maybe we need a reminder of why the humannature connection is so important. From the mountain of research available on the topic, here are just a handful of its benefits on our health and wellbeing.

• Physical benefits: improved heart function, reduced blood pressure,

more balanced hormones, better respiratory function and improved cognitive abilities.

• Psychological benefits: better regulation of emotions and increased stress management, resilience and positive thinking.

• Spiritual benefits: a deeper sense of self, a heightened feeling of gratitude, and greater insight into the positive and negatives of life.

• Social benefits: stronger bonds and attachments with others, a greater sense of empathy, and lessened conflict and aggression.

Some Fun New Vocabulary: Blue Space, Nature Prescriptions & Eco-Therapy?

Let’s start with Blue Space. Chances are you can guess what it is… Water!

Oceans, lakes, waterfalls, rivers, streams even small water fountains count! Studies confirm spaces with the element of water enhance mental health and decrease feelings of depression and anxiety. There is even some indication that blue spaces may be more restorative than green ones.

If you’ve ever heard ocean waves crashing on a shore or seen trees reflected on a mountain lake, you know the soothing

power of water.

Here’s another one - Nature Prescriptions.

Some doctors are prescribing time in nature to increase a patient’s overall health. (2 hours per week seems to be the minimum to see benefits.) Vermont – the healthiest state – is one of 34 states that have an official ‘Park Prescription Program’ as a way to promote healthy lifestyles and prevent chronic disease, without swallowing a pill or spending a dollar!

How about Ecotherapy? This approach to healing is centered on the strong connection between people and the environment around them, as well as to the earth itself. The use of nature as therapy has been successful in treating addiction, helping troubled children, and assisting Veterans with PTSD – just to name a few. You may have heard of horse therapy, but how about surf therapy? (It’s a real thing!)

A Way of Life Under the Big Sky As Montanans, the great outdoors are right at our fingertips and appreciating the awe-inspiring sights of our state is not just common sense, it’s a part of who we are. We know that nature makes us feel better, yet we can easily get out of the habit and find ourselves spending most of our time inside. So take a moment to think of outdoor activities you enjoy, then make a plan to add them to your routine. Whether you choose camping at Woodbine, enjoying a picnic on the Rims, strolling through your neighborhood or sipping iced tea on your patio, better health is just outside your door.

TALK WITH YOUR DOC TO PREVENT FALLS

When patients mention having fallen, they tend to shrug it off as part of aging or not important because they didn’t get seriously injured. Dr. Ali Brock, a geriatric specialist at RiverStone Health Clinic and the Montana Family Medicine Residency, has heard her patients say: “I’m just getting older.”

“I just tripped; it was my fault.”

“I’m not going to do it again.”

In fact, the results of falling can be severe, even fatal, especially for older adults. Patients working with their healthcare providers can do a lot to reduce the risk of falling. Consider these sobering U.S. statistics:

• Every 20 minutes in the United States, an older adult dies from a fall.

• More than 25% of U.S. adults over age 65 fall every year.

• People who have fallen once double their risk of falling again.

• Every year, falls cause 300,000 hip fractures, hospitalize 800,000 Americans with other injuries and generate 3 million emergency department visits.

Patients often don’t tell their doctors that they have fallen, unless a serious injury results requiring medical attention, Dr. Brock says.

RiverStone Health Clinics have started conversations about fall risks as part of annual checkups with patients age 65 and older. The new fall risk reduction program is a key part of the clinics’ effort to advance as an Age-Friendly Health System. Maintaining patient mobility is a key goal of Age-Friendly Health Systems.

RiverStone Health Clinics became the first Montana healthcare provider to achieve that national designation in December 2020.

Our fall risk prevention initiative began in autumn 2020 with Dr. Brock and Dr. Megan Littlefield, RiverStone Health chief medical officer, incorporating a fall risk prevention program into annual visits with patients age 65 and older. This year, RiverStone Health Clinics have trained more than 130 staff members in fall prevention, including all of our doctors, physician assistants, nurses and other professionals.

Now all RiverStone Health providers do fall risk assessment. Depending on how a patient answers a series of simple questions indicating fall risk, the patient may be asked to complete a “chair stand” test, assessing how many times the patient can stand up and sit down in 30 seconds. Scoring is adjusted for age and gender.

If fall risk is indicated, Dr. Brock will talk to her patient about appropriate interventions tailored to the individual’s needs.

The fall prevention assessment has opened up discussions, Dr. Brock said. Patients who previously didn’t want physical therapy are more open to it. Physical

therapy may be prescribed for improving balance and strength. Therapy can improve walking; for example: helping a person avoiding shuffling, which is riskier than picking up one’s feet while walking.

“The more you practice, the better it gets when it comes to balance, endurance and gait,” Dr. Brock says, adding that prescribed assistive devices, such as the appropriate cane or walker, also reduce fall risk.

“Fear of falling in and of itself increases the risk of falling,” Dr. Brock says. “The whole reason for a cane or a walker is to make the person more confident and not afraid to walk.”

Fall risk may warrant referrals to foot care, vision care or to a clinical pharmacist for consultation on prescriptions that could increase fall risk.

Behavioral healthcare may be needed for patients who are depressed. This illness tends to result in people moving less and taking more medication.

Less movement leads to weaker muscles, which increases fall risk.

Patients also get information to reduce risks at home. Throw rugs, poor lighting, obstacles on the floor, even pets can cause falls. Risk reduction may include double-sided tape to keep rugs in place, better lighting, nonslip bath mats and shower floor stickers, railings in stairwells and grab bars in bathrooms.

Falling – even if you didn’t get hurt this time – is a cautionary signal to visit with your healthcare provider about interventions to prevent another fall.

To keep moving, talk to your healthcare provider about preventing falls that could steal your mobility and independence.

Ken Peterson has been a rock for everyone at Meals on Wheels since 2005! He’s recently had some health issues and has needed to take a break from delivering meals for a while. This is a guy that has driven 5 days a week, changing routes at a moment’s notice when needed! He knows every route, and has many wonderful stories to tell about the people he has met over the years. Ken has trained many a new driver and established friendships, making the whole process a great experience for everyone. He and a few other drivers have even volunteered together for different organizations. They really do have fun serving so many people under our big sky. Please lift prayers and good thoughts for Ken and his lovely wife as they adjust to being the receivers, instead of the givers. Hopefully, he will be back with us very soon making life fun again!

Another driver, Tom Dennis, along with his wife Molly, have driven for Meals on Wheels since 2015. They love to stop and talk to each person. Tom, who does a little woodworking saw a unique but tired old red truck mailbox and asked Joan & Susan if they would let him try to freshen it up a bit.

He took it home and worked on it for several

Our Meals on Wheels Volunteers care about each person they deliver to. Some folks, we never see, as they are very private and don’t wish to have contact, others will just give us a wave from the window, and then there are those who need a little visit. We respect each person and their needs.

Meals on Wheels is interested in helping those who live alone, do not drive and are unable to cook healthy meals for themselves each day. Good nutrition is so very important in staying healthy. So often it is too easy to eat what takes the least amount of preparation and not

think of the nutritional value or importance of a balanced diet. This can take its toll on our health. If we include the fruits, vegetables and proteins needed to keep our body healthy, chances are there would be less hospitalizations.

UNDER THE BIG SKY If you remember the first open-air drive-in theater in Montana that first appeared right here in Billings, then you may have gone to the debut of the Motor-Vu, which was launched May 14, 1948 on what was then far out on the “west end” (near Mullowney Lane) and had room for 645 cars.

By 1954, their “big screen” had stretched to 108 feet for their season opener of “The Robe” and was billed as the first outdoor theater in the Northwest to show CinemaScope with stereophonic sound and second in the nation to equip each car with dual speakers.

Likewise, one of our Community members, seventy-something Andy Pickens of Huntley, recollects when, for their high school graduation night in May 1967, he and three of his best buddies piled into Andy’s Pontiac Bonneville Convertible with 18

its massive fins and round tail lights and headed to the Big Sky Drive-In (also known as the City-Vu, situated where the Target store on Main Street now occupies the spot). Of course, they weren’t going just to watch the movie.

In fact, the main attraction was the girls in the other car parked next to them.

Andy also recalls going to the Sage Drive-In with his folks and his little brother Jim on a summer evening in 1958. Andy was eight years old and remembers the film was The Bravados, a western starring Gregory Peck and Joan Collins.

While the boys ran to the concession stand for a big tub of buttery popcorn and some soda pops, Mom and Dad laid out the sleeping bags and pillows in the back seat for the kids. A picnic basket with the “adult” snacks lay on the floor board near the front seat so Andy’s dad

could have a beer while watching the big screen. Andy said that his parents loved the drive-in movie because his mom didn’t have to shush them to be quiet or chase after them like she did with the indoor theater, and his dad loved it because it was cheaper and he could drink a beer or two. Once the boys got back to their car with their goodies and settled into the back, Dad retrieved the large metal speakers from the posts and positioned them by hooking them on the partly rolled down windows, wires zigzagging from posts to carry the “stereo” sound throughout the car’s interior.

One of those is the Amusement Park Drive-In, located between Billings and Laurel at 7335 Mossmain Lane.

If you have a hankering to go “back to the future” and experience one of our country’s unique inventions the automobile and Hollywood movies - then consider hauling the grandkids to our own local novelty from the past, The Amusement Park Drive-In for an evening of “cinema under the stars.”

The Sage Drive-In opened in August 1950 in a farmer’s field. The majority of the land used for the drive-in is now Wal-Mart and the entrance is where Barnes & Noble sits on 24th Street West. The sixty-foot screen wasn’t as large as the Motor-Vu’s but was quite popular with the Billings residents because it also had a playground for the kids.

You would not think that Montana would be an ideal location for drive-ins. However, at its peak, Montana hosted no less than thirty-nine of them beneath our big star filled sky. Since that time, most have closed and gone www.allianceyc.org // Adult Resource Alliance 19

From Blight to Bright

I am sure that many of you have heard of the Yellowstone County Senior Mill Levy Fund. If you pay property tax you will see on your statement that a small portion is dedicated to support programs serving seniors within the County. Some of those funds help support the programs of the Adult Resource Alliance. The Senior Centers throughout Yellowstone County receive a significant part of their operating budgets through this fund. In addition, a number of non-profit groups that focus to some degree on serving seniors also receive support through the mill levy. Over the next few editions of the Senior News, we will be focuses on those organizations and the great work they do for the seniors of Yellowstone County. The first organization is Community Leadership and Development, Inc. or CLDI. —Mike Larson, Executive Director Community Leadership & Development, Inc. (CLDI) is a faith-based, non-profit organization devoted to serving the South Side neighborhood of Billings, Montana, for the past 40 years. CLDI's mission is to seek transformation through 20

the gospel of Jesus Christ to rebuild lives, restore families, and re-neighbor communities. As a community development organization at our core, we desire to see individuals thrive financially, spiritually, and relationally so that collectively, an entire neighborhood is impacted for the better. The South Side community has been known for being a pocket of poverty in the city of Billings for decades. Despite how others may view the South Side, we believe it is a community of rich history and a proud identity worthy of investment. We have and will continue to invest millions of dollars of resources, and thousands of hours of work, prayer, and effort, to see the South Side redeemed from blight to bright for the glory of God. CLDI has arranged itself to be a multifaceted organization to most effectively reach the needs of its neighborhood's residents. We find joy in finding creative solutions to the challenges marginalized families face.

For instance, those solutions look like the reclamation of blighted areas to create affordable, non-discriminatory housing and employment places. CLDI operates its own property management company and manages over 65 units to serve those who might have difficulty securing affordable housing (i.e., poor credit, rental history, criminal background, etc.), but not at the cost of quality. We use the landlord-tenant relationship to foster meaningful connections and encourage community involvement. We also leverage the business-customer relationship to invest in the lives of many at Rail//Line

CLDI successfully reconstructed a run-down, blighted property to cultivate a job training program, a safe place for community gatherings, and a vehicle to promote economic growth in the neighborhood. We also nurture positive relationships with youth and college-age students through mentorship opportunities, leadership development, and intentional discipleship through our Youth Works department and CLDI Internship program. The same relational emphasis is the foundation of the Hannah House, a CLDI recovery home for women and children with a focus on reunification.

Positive relationships are our top priority through and through. In all our efforts, we feel our neighbors can experience the love of Christ in both word and deed, and we want to continue to expand that same opportunity to the seniors around us. Through CLDI's various programs, we have grown and maintained relationships with the older South Side residents who are deeply rooted in the

community and have identified their desire to stay in the 'their' neighborhood as they age in place. While we are meeting the need for quality, affordable housing, we have not been able to fulfill the many requests from individuals who wish to transition into an accessible apartment suitable for their changing needs. Hence, our newest endeavor: six beautiful, fully ADA-compliant cottage units for low-income seniors who wish to live independently while aging with dignity. We are constructing each unit in a way that encourages independence, peer relationship and social engagement, and safety. Through CLDI's partnership with Adult Resource Alliance of Yellowstone County (ARA), our senior tenants will be able to utilize ARA's services (nutrition programs, transportation services, and more) which will further ensure that South Side seniors enjoy the highest possible quality of life.

LIFE’S Observations…

Montana has been called Big Sky Country for a long time. Maybe not since the first immigrants came across the Bering Land Bridge from Asia more than 16,000 years ago, but then it was covered with ice and it may have been overcast a lot.

clearest of winter nights, it was still challenging to find the North Star and the Big Dipper. The Milky Way was kind of a smudge of dim light. That was hard on this Montana boy.

Occasionally, we'd take the kids to Lake Erie where they could play on the beach and swim in the water, but I would stay on a park bench high above the water where I could rest my eyes, looking at anything far away. With a blue sky, the air might be clear enough to see bits of the Canadian shoreline, 25 or more miles away, though it wasn't as rewarding as seeing the breaks along the Yellowstone or Missouri Rivers at twice that distance.

We take it for granted here that we can count cows a mile away but once you get into “East Dakota” and beyond, you'll see flatter land, taller crops and a wetter climate that make long views increasingly less likely.

Last week we were in Minnesota visiting grandchildren (and their parents). On the way there and back I always do a lot of “rubber necking” according to my wife, but I need to know – How are the crops looking?

Are they putting up a lot of hay? Are the store parking lots indicating a robust amount of business? Are the morning “coffee tables” in small town cafes filled with old farmers retelling old stories? Are the highways populated with hundreds of orange cones AND workers at the same time? The answer is generally YES. We saw a healthy amount of optimism.

I love to take a road trip every so often to reaffirm my faith in humanity and what we can do, but even more, I am grateful to come home again. Even though it may soon be interrupted, I love the feeling of peace and contentment of once again being under vastness of the Big Sky.

The Annual Enrollment Period for Medicare Part D in 2021 will be:

October 15th to December 7th

Resource Center Staff can assist you to evaluate your Medicare D plans for 2022.

• Call the Resource Center at 259-5212 and request to be put on our Medicare D Worksheet mailing list. The worksheets will be mailed out on 9/15/21. After 9/15/21 requests will be mailed or emailed upon request.

• Fill out the worksheet completely and return it to The Resource Center. If there is missing information or an unsigned release, we won’t be able to complete the evaluation.

• Once we receive the worksheet, we will use the information provided to assess your current plan to see if it is a good choice for 2022 or if you should change to another plan. We will begin reviewing plan options after October 1st.

• If a new plan is a better choice, we will offer an appointment to assist you with enrollment if you like.

Remember that each year the prescription plans can change dramatically, so it is important to check your plan every year.

Not Everyone Likes Pink Pants: A LESSON LEARNED IN CAREGIVING

Everyone wants to feel heard, especially when they feel helpless. I learned this as a caregiver, trying to dress Mary Ann in a pair of pink pants.

One of my first full-time jobs right out of high school was caregiving at the assisted living facility where Mary Ann lived. Admittedly, I was not fully aware of what I was getting myself into. In fact, I strongly considered quitting after my very first shift. Not because of Mary Ann (or anyone else for that matter), but rather due to the surprisingly personal nature of job duties required, which of course involved personal hygiene care for complete strangers.

I entertained the idea of quitting well beyond my third and fourth shift, until I eventually stopped counting shifts, as they turned into a nearly four-year career. So I don’t know what shift number I was on the morning I peeked inside Mary Ann’s bedroom door to find her sitting on the edge of her bed.

As I helped her grab onto her walker, she weakly stood and walked toward the bathroom, not saying a word as her feet softly shuffled beneath her.

Once settled, I went to her closet where I found several pairs of blue pants, which Mary Ann wore most every day. Then I spotted a pair of pink pants, hanging in the very back, that appeared to be 28

hardly worn. I routinely chose Mary Ann’s outfits for her. Mary Ann had dementia, and she rarely spoke, so my outfit selections were never met with any previous objection – until this particular morning.

As I returned to the bathroom with pink pants in hand, I thoughtlessly began dressing Mary Ann. As I started sliding her legs through her pants, Mary Ann immediately declared, “Wow, those are loud.” Startled by this unfamiliar declaration of opinion, I looked up at her and smiled, mentally noting it was almost time to get Delores (who lived down the hall) in the shower. I quickly proceeded with the task at hand, not considering that Mary Ann didn’t like the pants I was dressing her in, even though I hadn’t bothered to ask.

Dishes could be heard clanking, and the smell of bacon growing stronger as we made our way down the hallway to breakfast. I kept my hand steadied on Mary Ann’s back as I gently guided her toward the dining room. Halfway there, she stopped in her tracks, leaned over her walker where her hands were tightly gripped, and stared down at those pink pants. “I don’t like these,” she said, “these are too loud.” Preoccupied with the list of tasks running through my mind, I again smiled and said, “I think you look nice.” I gave a slight tug of

her walker, signaling her to resume walking and we again commenced down the hall.

I assumed she would forget about her outfit at some point that morning and the day would go on as usual. The day did go on, except she didn’t forget about the pants, and there were at least a couple more remarks made by Mary Ann before I finally took her back to her room and changed her into her more comfortably familiar blue pants. This time upon leaving her room, she turned to look at me. Her ordinarily “lost” eyes made direct contact with mine. Her soft voice shook as she uttered, “thank you,” in a way that pierced my heart so permanently that I can picture the moment with unusual clarity to this day.

It’s true, not everyone likes pink pants. But what these pants actually represent to me is the irreplaceable gift of taking the time to listen to someone when they don’t feel heard. To slow down, be present, and pay attention – even if I think there’s no time. I learned from Mary Ann that compassion is essential. It is void of convenience and intrusion of opinion, and it never involves assumption about someone else’s ability to have a say in their own life – particularly in those aged years when, for many who experience dementia, memories flee and confusion thrives. That moment in life when independence may gradually fade and sudden inability take its place – without warning or permission. Nothing says vulnerable quite like living in an unfamiliar “home” not of your choosing, where complete strangers are given the responsibility for nearly every aspect of your personal care.

This story isn’t about feeling sorry for someone like Mary Ann, but rather having respect for those who, for whatever reason, may no longer be able to take care of themselves.

Mary Ann taught me that helping someone does not mean making them feel helpless. It is communicating their worth, especially at their most vulnerable. It is restoring a spark of confidence that perhaps the outside world has assumed doesn’t matter to them anymore. The confidence that comes from wearing the blue pants of your own choosing.

You may have heard that it’s important to take the emotions out of investing. But is this true for all emotions?

pursuing your hobbies or taking part in whatever activities you’ve envisioned for your retirement lifestyle? If you can keep this happy picture in mind, you may find it easier to maintain the discipline needed to consistently invest.

Certainly, some emotions can potentially harm your investment success.

Consider fear. If the financial markets are going through

Another motivating force is the most powerful emotion of all – love. If you have loved ones who depend on you, such as a spouse and children, you need to protect their future. One key element of this protection is the life insurance necessary to take care of your family’s needs – housing, education and so on – should something happen to you.

Greed is another negative emotion. When the financial markets are rising, you might be so motivated to “cash in” on some big gains that you will keep purchasing investments that might already be overpriced – and since these investments are already expensive, your dollars will buy fewer shares.

In short, the combination of fear and greed could cause you trouble.

But other emotions may prove useful. For example, if you can channel the joy you’ll feel upon achieving your investment goals, you may be more motivated to stay on track toward achieving them. To illustrate: You may want to see your children graduate from college someday.

Can you visualize them walking across the stage, diplomas in hand? If so, to help realize this goal, you might find yourself ready and willing to contribute to a college savings vehicle, such as a 529 plan. Or consider your own retirement: Can you see yourself traveling or 30

Furthermore, you may need to protect your loved ones from another threat – your own vulnerability to the need for long-term care. Someone turning age 65 today has almost a 70% chance of eventually needing some type of long-term care, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. This type of care, such as an extended nursing home stay or the help of a home health aide, is extremely expensive, and, for the most part, is outside the reach of Medicare. So, to pay for long-term care, you might have to drain a good part of your resources – or depend on your grown children for financial help.

To keep your financial independence and avoid possibly burdening your family, you may want to consult with a financial professional who can recommend a strategy and appropriate solutions to cover long-term care costs.

By drawing on positive emotions, you can empower yourself to make the right financial moves throughout your life.

Have you enjoyed the hot summer? I have seen beautiful flowers, great gardens, and farmer ’s markets. There have been days for camping, boat trips, RVing, and ice cream socials. We have had Homesteader Days, family reunions, and threshing bees.

Maybe you had a quiet day at home, mowing or watering your lawn, BBQing, or just sitting in a chair and counting the beautiful stars. If you have enjoyed any of these things, then you know why we live “Under the Big Sky”. ENJOY!

After 16 months of not meeting because of the Pandemic it is wonderful to get together again at the Shepherd Community Center. So far, our attendance for meals is down, but I expect it to begin to pick up as more folks get out and about.

We meet at the Shepherd Community Center every Wednesday at noon. Please call Lynette to make a reservation. Also, remember if you are unable to attend, call her @ 671-8413 by 11:30 on Mondays.

Sadly, we have lost one of our group and we miss her very much. She volunteered her services and skills at the school as well as other places. She also worked at changing printing to Braille for the blind. Bless You Mary.

The Seniors are meeting on Tuesday and Thursday for exercise sessions at 9:00 AM. Come and get in shape, or if you are already in shape, stay that way.

Attention Huntley Seniors: We have election of officers and board members at our August 19th meeting. We begin two monthly meetings in September, the 2nd and 16th. Please be sure to volunteer. Remember, it is your senior center.

Our group is delighted to be back to almost normal. It’s the little things like having the salt & pepper shakers back on the tables. Getting to sit closer together so we’re not shouting is also a plus.

I am retiring my position with Adult Resource Alliance due to health reasons. These past 13 years were rewarding and I have many special memories and lots of good friends.

TOPIC: SPECIAL FRAUD WATCH DURABLE MEDICAL EQUIPMENT – BEWARE OF SCAMS

Please note that diabetic supplies or durable medical equipment (DME) telemarketing scam calls will be coming to your phone if they haven’t already.

That’s because scammers are contacting Medicare beneficiaries to offer “free or low-cost” orthotic braces or other supplies. These fraudsters bill Medicare for medically unnecessary equipment using your information.

People on Medicare should be aware that DME sent by a supplier needs to be prescribed by their doctor. According to CMS, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, fraudulent telemarketing and DME supplies contribute to the estimated $60 billion in fraudulent Medicare payments each year. Though it may end up being no cost to the person immediately, it is costing Medicare (taxpayers) and your health insurance company (increasing premium costs), and until you report it, they will get away with it.

A good rule of thumb is do not pick up the phone unless you know who is calling. Otherwise, let your 38

voicemail do its job. The phone is not the same one we grew up with. If you don’t pick up, you can’t become a victim. Also, when you pick up a phone it marks you as a live line to the telemarketers and you will stay on their call rotation. If you not only pick up the phone, but spend any time talking to them, regardless of whether you give them information, you also become more likely to be sold to another telemarketing outfit, because they track the time spent. The longer you spend, the more likely a new telemarketer thinks they can get you. Eventually, through blocking numbers and not picking up, you will slow the unsolicited calls you receive.

If you received items in the mail you didn’t order, refuse the delivery or send them back and report it to your local SMP office at 259-5212.

Until someone else figures out how to stop these unsolicited calls from reaching out to you in the first place, we’ll stop the fraud one case at a time thanks to your help.
