And even though you’re just flying to Ende on the island of Flores you know that from there you will be making tracks for mysterious Kelimutu, with its three crater lakes; one of the most famous icons of Indonesian travel.

I did say directly from the airport – not exactly … there was a slight problem - the four tyres of the car that was to take us to Moni, had a layer of rubber so thin the rims looked like train wheels – they looked worse than Mark Webber’s treadless sliks at the end of an F1 race!

Penerbangan ke Ende itu sendiri sangatlah menarik. Kami terbang melewati gunung berapi berasap, begitu dekat serasa dapat menyentuhnya. Pendaratan yang berbelok ke kiri sangat tajam dan manuver diantara gunung dan tonjolan batu yang menjorok keluar dari laut yang letaknya di sebelah kiri ujung landasan memperlihatkan kepada Anda bahwa terbang bisa menjadi hal yang menyenangkan. Dan kami berterima kasih atas sabuk pengaman kami yang membuat kami tetap berada di kursi ketika pesawat harus berhenti - runway pendek dan tepat didepannya sebuah bukit. Hanya ada satu cara masuk dan keluar ke Bandar udara H. Hasan Aroeboesman, Ende.

Kami beruntung dengan jadwal penerbangan pagi memungkinkan kami dapat langsung menuju ke sebuah desa bernama Moni, dekat Kelimutu tanpa harus menghabiskan setengah malam di sebuah hotel di Ende dan harus berangkat jam 2 dinihari menuju Kelimutu. Kami memilih untuk berangkat langsung dari bandara ke Moni dan mulai mendaki dari sana.

Saya memang mengatakan langsung dari bandara – itu tidak benar ... ada sedikit masalah - keempat ban mobil yang kami akan gunakan ke Moni, memiliki lapisan karet sangat tipis seperti roda kereta api - lebih buruk dari roda mobil yang dikendarai oleh Mark Webber pada akhir perlombaan F1!

Ya, bule dalam diri saya muncul dan saya menolak untuk melanjutkan perjalanan ke gunung sebelum keempat roda tersebut diganti atau kita akan mencari mobil lain - TETAPI ... hampir semua kendaraan memiliki ban yang sama - ini gila. Dua jam kemudian sopir kami kembali dengan dua ban yang layak di depan dan lagi di bagian belakang. Hal ini membuat kami tidak dapat melihat rumah bekas pengasingan Bung karno dan tempat lain yang terkenal di Ende. Pokoknya saya ingin menikmati sejuknya udara di Moni – dekat dengan Kelimutu - hal lain bisa menunggu.

The flight to Ende itself is exciting – it sets the scene. We flew past a smoking volcano so close you could touch it. The landing that requires a sharp left turn and a manoevre between the base of a mountain and a rocky outcrop that juts out of the ocean on the approach just to the left of the end of the runway, shows you that flying can still be fun. And we were grateful for our safety belts that kept us firmly in our seats as the breaks were applied – the runway is short and runs into a hill – there is only one way in and out of Ende’s H. Hasan Aroeboesman airport.

We had been lucky with our itinerary that enabled us to go straight to a town called Moni, near Kelimutu without having to spend half the night in an Ende hotel before an early 2 a.m. departure direct to the mountain. We amended our schedule opting to depart direct from the airport to Moni and start the climb from there. I did say directly from the airport – not exactly … there was a slight problem - the four tyres of the car that was to take us to Moni, had a layer of rubber so thin the rims looked like train wheels – they looked worse than Mark Webber’s treadless sliks at the end of an F1 race!

Yes, the bule in me emerged and I refused to travel up mountain roads unless said tyres were changed or car changed – BUT and this is an important BUT … all the other transport vehicles had bald tyres – this was crazy but it pays to insist. Two hours later the driver returned with two decent tyres up front and two at the back with a few lines of tread tread as “thick” as a rubber band. This had us behind schedule which

Menjelang sore Kami berkendara ke Moni, kabut yang cukup tebal mulai turun menyelimuti pemandangan pegunungan yang spektakuler. Udara mulai dingin dan kami memasuki pelataran parkir Eco Lodge, merupakan akomodasi paling nyaman yang kami peroleh, dengan fasilitas lengkap dan yang paling penting – air panas! Ada beberapa hotel dan homestay lain disepanjang jalan utama di Moni serta restoran yang menyuguhkan hidangan sederhana. Sekali lagi, saya berterima kasih atas roti isi Starbuck yang kami beli saat kami di Denpasar.

Seperti sebagian besar gunung terkenal di dunia – bahkan Gunung Everest – perlu sebuah dorongan untuk mencapai puncak dan harus rela bangun dipagi buta. Pada pukul empat tiga puluh kami telah siap mobil kami meluncur ketempat pendakian terdekat, Kurang lebih setengah jam perjalanan dari Moni. Beberapa rombongan lain tiba dengan menggunakan mobil dan sepeda motor - semua segera mulai berjalan dalam kegelapan. Beberapa pendaki berpengalaman mengenakan lampu kepala, para pendaki lain yang tidak begitu siap mengikuti orang tersebut dengan sangat berhati-hati menaiki gunung.

Some seasoned climbers attach head lamps, the other more unprepared climbers attach themselves to the tails of these and gingerly move up the mountain meant we weren’t able to see President Sukarnoe’s house of exile or other place of interest for which Ende is famous. Anyway I wanted to get up to the cool of Moni – nearby to Kelimutu – anything else could wait.

Late in the afternoon the drive to Moni is fog enshrouded and not much is seen of what must be spectacular mountain scenery. It gets cold and as we pulled into Eco Lodge, the most comfortable if slightly pricey accommodation, we were grateful that rooms included Moni’s most scarce commodity – hot water! Plenty of other hotels and home stays line the Moni main road and include restaurants with inexpensive cuisine. For once in my life I was grateful for the rolls bought at Starbuck’s.

As on most of the world’s famous mountains - Mt Everest included – a final “push” for the summit requires an early morning wake-up call. At four thirty a.m. climbers intent on Kelimutu leave for the base of the summit, about half an hour uphill from Moni. Some like us arrive in cars, others more rugged up arrive on the backs of motor bikes – but all soon begin the walk in pitch dark. Some seasoned climbers attach head lamps, the other more unprepared climbers attach themselves to the tails of these and gingerly move up the mountain.

mendaki – napas kami terengah-engah setelah 15-20 menit berjalan mencapai tangga semen dengan rel untuk berpegangan, masih ada beberapa tangga lagi untuk sampai di puncak yang membutuhkan dua puluh menit lagi. Langkah kami mulai melamban. Cahaya, mulai tampak tinggi di kejauhan, dengan susah payah kami tetap berjalan, langit berangsur-angsur terang dan kami dapat melihat lebih jelas bahwa kami akan segera sampai dipuncak.

Bagi orang yang suka berolah raga, ini hal yang mudah- rel tangan, tangga? Apa, tidak ada porter? Yah biarlah kami bersyukur - bukan untuk bantuan yang mereka berikan, tetapi untuk faktor keamanannya. Mendaki pada bukit yang sempit dimana sisinya terdiri dari kerikil dan tanah longsor jika dipijak dengan mudah akan terperosok ke dalam jurang. Tanyakan pada siapa saja yang pernah mendaki Gunung Rinjani, bahkan tidak ada tali yang tersedia untuk bernegosiasi dengan lereng yang longsor dan Anda akan melihat suatu pekerjaan luar biasa yang Kelimutu Nasional Park telah lakukan untuk memastikan jalan ke atas cukup aman bahkan untuk anak - anak.

On a mountain climb where the air is already a little thin it’s very easy to see and hear the unfit (or unaccustomed) climbers – heavy breathing is a give-away and after fifteen to twenty minutes out of breath we reached a nicely cemented stairway with hand rails for the final ‘assault’ on the summit which would take another twenty minutes of slow stepping. A light, high in the distance, it was agreed, was (hopefully) the summit and as we trudged on and the sky got lighter we could see that this was so and that we didn’t have much further to walk.

The fitness fanatics among you may well snigger – hand rails, steps?

What, no porters? Well let it be known how grateful we were – not just for the assistance they rendered but for the safety factor. Towards the top, the climb clings to a narrow ridge whose sides are covered in loose pebbles and volcanic skree with steep, trecherous drops down each side - which could easily place tired climbers at risk. Ask anyone who has climbed Mt Rinjani where not even ropes are available to negotiate its loose slopes and you will see what a great job the Kelimutu national park has done in ensuring the way to the top is safe enough even for small children.

Pergantian dari langit gelap dan berbintang kemudian tampak cahaya garis orange mulai muncul dari balik perbukitan. Perlahan-lahan matahari merangkak di atas cakrawala semakin besar dan lebih besar memberikan warna bagi salah satu panorama Indonesia yang spektakuler. Seperti yang Anda ketahui, Kelimutu terkenal dengan danau tiga warna. Yang terbesar, tampak ketika kita melihat ke arah matahari terbit keduanya saat itu berwarna kehijauan. Sedangkan danau ketiga, berwarna hitam terletak di barat atau di belakang jika Anda menghadap ke dua danau. Oleh karena itu tidak mungkin untuk melihat ketiga danau dari posisi satu.

Merupakan informasi menarik bagi para fotografer yang mungkin mengganggap jika menggunakan lensa wide angle dapat mengambil ketiga danau tersebut – ternyata tidak!

The summit is stunning and for those of you that love a cappuccino, latte or nice espresso, there is no better tasting coffee in the world than the simple cups of hot local coffee made by hardy but enterprising local men wrapped in their traditionally woven blankets.

The transition from the dark and starry sky to light begins as an ever increasing line of deep orange over a jagged mountain range in the distance. The source of the transition, The sun, slowly creeps up over the horizon getting larger and larger until it blasts out providing colour for one of Indonesia’s most spectacular panoramas. As you may know, Kelimutu is famous for its three crater lakes. The largest, when looking towards the rising sun or to the east from the viewing platform gradually becomes visible dead in front, and another similarly turquoise coloured lake in the distance gradually comes into view. The third, which is the last to reveal itself and is black in colour is located to the west or behind if you are facing the large lake directly below. It is therefore impossible to see all three lakes from the one position. An interesting piece of info for photographers who might think a wide angle lense might include all lakes – no.

lainnya mengambil foto berkelompok, disela sela terdengar tawa dan canda para penjual dan pemandu. Suasana bersahabat dan kehangatan dari semua suku yang dapat saya rasakan - menghangatkan puncak Kelimutu.

Awan mulai turun menyeliputi gunung dan puncak Kelimutu. Kami semua mulai bergegas menuruni puncak gunung Kelimutu, perjalan cukup cepat membawa kami tiba dipelataran parkir. Kita semua pasti tahu kita tidak bisa hidup hanya dengan kopi, oleh sebab itu kami memutuskan untuk pergi ke salah satu homestay yang juga memiliki sebuah restoran.

Nasi goreng, banana pancake dan…. Sayup sayup kami mendengar perbincangan dari sekelompok backpacker setelah melihat menu: “Saya ingin roti panggang dengan mentega dan selai.”

“Maaf kami tidak memiliki selai.”

“Ok bagaimana jika roti panggang dengan mentega.”

“Oh maaf kami tidak ada mentega.”

“Oh, jadi apa yang saya taruh di roti panggang saya?”

“Telur!!!”

Some engage in chit chat in a variety of languages while gazing out over the otherworldly scene, other more brave individuals disappear over the safety rails to get closer views of the largest lake. Others set up group picture shots while others laugh and joke with the local guides and coffee makers. The ambience is one of friendship, camaraderie and warmth – and can I say it? Between all races ….

Soon the clouds roll in to hide the lakes and surrounding mountain peaks. The descent takes no time at all but man cannot live on coffee alone and we drive to one of the homestays in Moni for a breakfast of nasi goreng, banana pancakes and ….. overheard coming from a group of backpackers looking at the menu: “I’d like the toast with butter and jam.”

“Sorry we don’t have jam.” “ Ok just toast with butter.”

“Sorry no butter.” “ Oh well what can I have on my toast?”

“Eggs.”

Saya berfikir begitu banyak yang dapat saya peroleh dalam waktu yang cukup singkat. Dari Bali memungkinkan Anda terbang ke Flores untuk mengunjungi Kelimutu dan kembali dalam dua hari. Merupakan hal yang nyaman bagi Anda, tetapi bertemu kembali para backpacker yang melakukan perjalanan berbekal dengan ransell, tinggal di homestay dan menggunakan transportasi local, mengingatkan saya bahwa perjalanan tidak hanya untuk melihat atraksi yang luar biasa, tetapi lebih mengenai perjalanan dan individu yang menjalankannya – berbagi cerita, tertawa, kesulitan yang kita hadapi dan persahabatan yang sekali lagi saya alami dalam waktu yang cukup singkat.

I began reflecting on how much can be achieved in such a short period of time. From Bali if you fly in, it’s possible to do Kelimutu and return in two days and two nights. That’s convenience for you, but rubbing shoulders with travellers living out of their back packs, taking local travel and bunking down in budget lodgings as many do on the overland crossing of Flores, I was reminded that travel is not so much about seeing the outstanding attractions of this world, it’s more about the journey and the individuals you run into – the shared stories, the laughs, the hardships – the camaraderie that I fleetingly once again experienced – if only for a short time.

Ada beberapa cara untuk mengunjungi Kelimutu, salah satunya adalah dari Maumere kemudian diakhiri di Labuan Bajo. Lainnya melakukan yang sebaliknya setelah kembali dari Labuan Bajo

Some experience Kelimutu as one of the many attractions on the overland trail across Flores that often starts in Maumere before heading west to Labuan Bajo. Others do it in reverse beginning in Labuanbajo.

Atau terbangan menuju Maumere atau Ende kemudian berkendara menuju Moni, lalu mendaki ke atas puncak gunung Kelimutu.

How to get there

Some fly into Maumere or Ende and then make the drive to Moni and then up the mountain.

Diangkat dari sebuah komik oleh kartunis asal Belgia, Pierre Culliford alias Peyo, The Smurf menceritakan kehidupan makhluk kecil berwarna biru yang tenteram dan damai di desa mereka. Dua pemuda Inggris berkano dan mengayuh sepeda dari Inggris ke Australia melalui Lombok dan pulau-pulau Gili beberapa tahun lalu, mendengar suara hutan - suara yang melewati Garis Wallace. Kami menulis ulang kisah mereka yang penuh suka cita Two English lads canoed and pedalled from England to Australia via Lombok and The Gili islands a few tears ago and heard a new jungle chorus – the chorus across the Wallace Line.

We continue our ride the next day up to Senggigi beach once again and then onwards towards the famous Gili Islands. The ride takes us along a viciously steep road that repeatedly climbs and shoots back down to the sea once again. Our views of the deep blue seas and breaking surf are nothing short of breathtaking, and yet we can barely appreciate them. We find ourselves pushing up some of the steepest sections and steams of sweat trickle off us.

Just before Bangsal we find a tiny jetty for outrigger canoes out to the Gilis. We hoist our laden bicycles high above our heads to load them aboard our ferry to the island. We’ve chartered our very own own boat – it’s a fantastic way to reach the islands on our very own brightly painted canoe.

All too quickly Andrew and I are riding alone away from the Gilis. Although the team is still six strong the others have decided on a few more days in paradise, and will catch us up further east. Our ride from Bangsal in the midmorning is thirsty work indeed. The road continues to undulate and it seems that the temperature is unusually high today. The usually lush green flora at the roadside has turned today into a sun scorched brown – and we find ourselves entering a new landscape.

The road around the north side of the island is in great condition and gives us a perfectly smooth passage, but it certainly doesn’t have the feel of the trodden path. We’re greeted by folk at the roadside with wide eyes and friendly smiles. Few villages interrupt our ride, and so we ride on and on, without reason to stop. We know we have a tough ride today and we gather that our route will take us high into the Rinjani National Park. Quite how high we can’t be sure but it’s going to be a late night.

Sembalun valley Berangkat pagi buta berarti kami baru saja tiba di kaki gunung yang disebut Sembalun sesaat setelah matahari rendah di langit. Cahaya hangat keluar dari bayang-bayang pepohonan kelapa diantara sawah, dan kami tetap mendaki. Akhirnya tibalah saat-saat dimana Andrew dan saya berdua mulai mengurangi kecepatan.

Kami berlumuran keringat kotor dan bertanya-tanya apa yang telah kami lakukan hingga mendapat cobaan sesulit ini. Tanpa alternatif untuk mengatur perjalanan kami dengan Chris dan Dean, dua dari anggota tim kami, kita berjuang ke atas ke hutan lembab. Bahkan sebelum malam tiba, tubuh kami diselimuti rasa lengket, kotor dan berdebu. Tiba-tiba tampak hutan tebal dan gelap, yang datang mengancam. Suara-suara bergema di sekitar kami berbeda dari suara yang biasa didengar. Ini adalah paduan suara hutan - paduan suara di seberang garis Wallace - dan cukup membuat berdiri bulu kuduk. Kami hanya berharap tidak bertemu dengan salah satu reptil yang terkenal pada garis Wallace!

Mt. Rinjani

Setting off in the mid morning means that we’re only just beginning our climb up to a mountain refuge called Sembalun as the sun dips low in the sky. The warm light casts long shadows from the palms between the paddies, and we’re still climbing. The road finally in the last moments of the day begins a drastic gradient and Andrew and I are both reduced to pushing. We’re soaked in a grimy perspiration and we wonder quite what we have done to deserve such a tough ordeal. Without any alternatives and having made arrangements with Chris and Dean, two of our team members, we struggle upwards into the damp forest.

Even before the proper onset of night, were enveloped in a sticky, murky dusk. The forest has suddenly grown thick and dark, and at the same time has come menacingly to life. The noises that echo all around us are unlike any that we have heard on our journey. This is a new jungle chorus – the chorus across the Wallace line – and it sends a shiver down the spine. We just hope we don’t get to meet any of the reptile life that this side of the Wallace line is infamous for! We liberally smear ourselves with 100 concentration diet formula in an effort to keep the mosquitoes away, our eyes soon stinging as it dribble down along with the rivers of sweat that continue to roll from every pore.

In the pitch black we finally reach our target, Sembalun Lawang. We collapse into the guest house to find Dean and Chris swatting flies for all

Kami berlomba menuruni jalan curam dan licin – meluncur pada tikungan tajam melingkar dan berteriak-teriak di sepanjang pepohonan besar. Tanda ‘bahaya, bahaya’ terdengar di setiap putaran - hutan

A beautiful crisp sunny morning greets us the next day – and we breakfast rapidly and get underway early. We’re eager to actually see the famed Sembalun valley rather than ride it at night. The latticework of neatly tended fields is a joy to behold. As we make our final climb up to the pass the vista is a picture postcard. The white cottonwool clouds billowing over the ridge, and cutting a dramatic contrast both to the deep green of velveted valley walls and the perfect pale blue of the sky. We pause for just a few moments atop the pass to drink in the marvelous view before we’re surrounded by mountain mist.

A chill in the air tells us its time to dive down the other side. Our second breakfast stop beckons! We

Sembalun and Mt. Rinjani yang hidup dengan monyet hitam dan abu-abu. Kami melihat wajah mereka yang ingin tahu tetapi takut mengintip diantara cabang dan dedaunan serta menari-nari melintasi kanopi di tempat yang lebih aman.

Hujan mengguyur tubuh kami membawa kami tiba di desa Sapit.

Kami berhenti untuk makan makanan ringan di Hati Suci restoran dan menikmati panorama megah lainnya. Kali ini kami berencana keluar menuju Sumbawa. Setelah hujan mulai reda, kami melaju menuju pantai dimana suhu perlahan lahan mulai naik - pemandangan juga membuat suhu panas meningkat. Kami dapat melihat secara keseluruhan Selat Alas (antara Lombok dan Sumbawa), dan rute kami ke depan terlihat jelas, tampak sangat mudah. Hanya beberapa kilometer dengan mengayuh cepat, tibalah kami di Labuan Lombok, di pantai pesisir timur Lombok.

Kami telah selesai melintasi tanah Sasak. Di tengah hiruk-pikuk sebuah kota pelabuhan di Indonesia, kami menemukan sebuah hotel sederhana dan restoran yang menyuguhkan steak tuna panggang yang lezat.

Malam terasa panas, tetapi kami siap untuk menyeberang besok menuju Sumbawa.

race down the steep and slippery road – flying round hairpin bends and screaming along straight sections between the mighty hardwood trees. Squawks of ‘danger, danger’ are heard at every turn – the jungle is alive with grey and black monkeys. We see their inquisitive but timid faces peering between branches and leaves and they dance off across the canopy to a safer spot.

A brief rain shower brings us to a halt in Sapit village. We enjoy a quick snack in the Hati Suci restaurant and savour yet another magnificent panorama. This time we’re looking out towards Sumbawa. After the rain relents we cruise down towards the coast to find the temperature rising once again – but the view makes up for the building heat. We can see the whole Alas Strait (between Lombok and Sumbawa), and our route ahead clearly visible, looking tantalizingly easy. Just a few short kilometers of the fast pedaling and we’re pulling into the port of Labuan Lombok, on the east coast.

Our crossing of the land of the Sasak people is complete. Amid the hustle and bustle of a busy Indonesian port town we find a simple hotel and restaurant that serve us delicious grilled tuna steak. The night is a hot and clammy one, but we’re ready for our crossing tomorrow; tomorrow we head for Sumbawa.

If you head east on the island of Flores from the town of Maumere, the alluring art of traditional textile awaits you at Watublapi, a small community of Sikka well known for its fine traditional ikat weaving.

Whereas many local weaving communities have switched to industrially spun yarn and chemical dyes for the sake of saving time and money, the weavers of Watublapi still use the traditional hand spun yarn made out of local cotton, as well as local natural dyes.

Visitors to Watublapi who register in advance can be sure of a warm welcome from the members of Bliran Sina with traditional dance and music performances. If you dare, you can even taste and chew the famous sirih pinang, betel nut, which is part of the Sikkanese tradition for welcoming guests. Thought to strengthen teeth while having a stimulating effect, it is very popular among elderly women. Don’ worry though - the red stain on your teeth will disappear within a few hours!

In the 1980s, the villagers of Watublapi, along with the assistance of a German Priest, Pater Bollen, established a cultural cooperative called Sanggar Bliran Sina to preserve and promote local dance, music, ikat weaving and other handicrafts. Under the enthusiastic leadership of Daniel David, a young man from Watublapi, Bliran Sina has become a well-established cooperative of more than 40 members, who support each other in financial, educational and health issues. Furthermore, Bliran Sina’s outside orientation and collaboration with fair-trade organizations, such as ‘Threads of Life,’ has made it possible for Watublapi ikats to find their way to collectors all over the world.

The sanggar (studio) in Watublapi also gives you the opportunity of observing all the different steps of the ikat weaving process, starting from dyeing the threads to the final product. The tools used for weaving, as well as the process itself, have not changed much over the years.

All the cotton used for ikat production in Watublapi is grown in the gardens surrounding the village and most cotton processing activities take place in the dry season. Using a special cotton gin, the weavers remove seeds from the cotton. Then, the cotton balls are further refined with a taut wire. This fluffy cotton pile is then rolled into separate parts of equal size to be spun into thread with a spinning wheel.

As well as the cotton, all the dyes used in Watublapi are hand made and come from plants in the villagers’ own gardens to give the ikat its distinct local touch of blue, yellow, red, brown and green. The weavers will eagerly show you the source of these natural ingredients in the form of turmeric roots, morinda, mango and jackfruit trees, directly in their gardens during a demonstration of the complex processes to produce the dyes.

The distinct design of Watublapi cloth is based on the ikat technique where small bundles of thread are tied tightly together with dried palm leafs to create meaningful and symbolic motifs such as lizards, horses, birds, plants and geometrical patterns. After dyeing the threads and removing the tied palm leafs, the design is revealed in white. For the weaving, Watublapi weavers use a back strap loom. While the warps featuring lengthwise threads are under tension, a horizontal thread is passed between those warps.

Considering the time-and resource-intense process of making a traditional ikat with all natural ingredients, Watublapi ikats are sold at a higher price than the other mass produced products in the Maumere market.

If you are interested in ikat weaving there is the opportunity to join an ikat workshop in Watublapi. The Bliran Sina weavers will teach you the skills

of this handicraft, from the spinning of the cotton, preparing the dyes, designing the motif, to the weaving on the loom. How to get there Watublapi village is located east of Maumere. You can reach the village easily by car or motorbike since the road is in good condition. About 7 km from Maumere, pass the Geliting market. About 100 m from the market on the right, there is a sign to St. Gabriel Hospital. Follow the road, which passes through several villages. After about 13 km you will arrive in Watublapi with its bamboo entrance gate on the left.

So don’t let it be said you went to Bali and didn’t drive up to The Bukit, an area of Bali so thrilling it can compete with any of the seven wonders of the world. It has to be Bali’s most spectacular real estate area – why else would the world’s finest hotels be converging there and real estate that was not long ago virgin brush now becoming prime – welcome to The Bukit, an area of Bali so thrilling it can compete with any of the seven natural wonders of the world.

Many festivals

It ‘s about 200 metres in height, covers an area the size of Darwin and is flat on top making it, in fact, a plateau and not a hill. No other comparisons with Darwin come to mind!

“Bukit” means “hill” and remember not to pronounce it like that thing you put water into to put out fires. It’s closer to how someone from England’s north-east might pronounce it, or as you would say “book it to my account, my good man”.

It’s south of Kuta. It’s the foot on the chickenshaped map of Bali. It ‘s about 200 metres in height, covers an area the size of Darwin and is flat on top making it, in fact, a plateau and not a hill.

No other comparisons with Darwin come to mind!

It’s a piece of Bali magic. It’s views, it’s panaoramas, it’s wide angle lenses and more. On a clear day looking down you can see the cultural and artistic heights of Ubud and Bedugul and Kintamani. It is perhaps one of the most spectacular areas of Bali – perhaps the whole of Indonesia. And it’s located no more than a stone’s throw from everything else that has made Bali popular.

If you’re not already staying in the many accommodation possibilities on The Bukit, you won’t need exhaustive preparations, nor the fanaticism of an attack on Everest to see this piece of Bali magic. You won’t have to give up the luxury of your pool-side cocktail bar for more than a few hours. Don’t fret about missing that Kuta sunset or surfing the Kuta crowds – The Bukit is the Bali sunset viewing platform.

Rising above the surrounding countryside and ocean, views from The Bukit of almost the entire island of Bali and Indian Ocean from where you can almost see the coast of Australia, (said one euphoric local) are sensational. Leaving the Nusa Dua bypass at Jimbaran, and following the road through the village, you soon meet the steep incline that takes you up The Bukit and away from the fertile lowlands. Soon the rest of Bali lies beneath you and you are rewarded with a panorama of immense dimension. To the north you gaze on the mountain range extending from west to east that includes the crater of Mt. Batur and the huge mass of Mt. Agung poking up into the clouds. Sometimes you can actually see the peaks of Java far in the distance. To the south-east look out onto the table topped shape of Nusa Penida sitting in the straits that divide Bali from Lombok. Further out to sea might be Lombok’s Mt. Rinjani, one of Indonesia’s giants only slightly lower than Mt. Fuji.

Unlike the rest of Bali, this area is not volcanic in origin. The Bukit, which is joined to the mainland of Bali by a narrow isthmus, (some might say by the speedway called the by-pass), is a huge mound of

Impossibles, Dreamland dan Balangan yang telah membuat Bali menjadi salah satu pusat berselancar dunia. Pura Uluwatu dianggap salah satu yang paling suci dan paling penting di Bali. Ada blok vulkanik yang besar di dalam pura yang sebagian menghalangi pintu masuk ke halaman dalam di mana tembok rendah mengelilingi beberapa pura, pada awalnya tidak mengesankan, tetapi ketika Anda mendekati dinding luar tampak pemandangan yang sangat menakjubkan. Samudera Hindia membentang ke cakrawala, tebing besar pada tiga sisi di mana gelombang pecah berbusa putih dan pirus yang kemudian surut, memperlihatkan terumbu karang merah muda. Sebuah penjaga yang bersifat komersial muncul di Bukit. Dengan hanya sebagian kepalanya saja yang selesai, lereng sebelah utara Bukit akan menjadi tempat untuk patung Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK). Seperti Sphinx atau piramida, yang menjadi sebuah pengharapan seseorang untuk keabadian - skala proyek tersebut

pure white limestone which was once a coral reef when the seas of this world were much higher. The link with the ocean has never been broken, it’s still almost entirely surrounded by water. Huge swells terminate their unimpeded journey from Antarctica by battering The Bukit’s shores, playing sculptor to towering cliffs and, beneath them, creating beaches of soft powdery sand curling their way along the water’s edge.

It’s off these beaches that surfers enjoy some of the best waves on the planet.

Legendary breaks such as Padang-Padang, Impossibles, Dreamland and Balangan that have made Bali one of the Meccas of the world surfing. The most famous break of all, Uluwatu, gets its name from the small temple perched on the edge of a cliff that, like a quiet sentinel, gazes out into the sea. Just watching the surfers push those envelopes of tubing power is worth driving to the edge.

Uluwatu temple is considered one of the holiest and most important in Bali.

There are large volcanic blocks inside the temple which partially obstruct the entrance to the inner courtyard where a low wall encloses several shrines. The temple is not at first impressive, but as you approach the outer wall the full impact of the scene strikes you. Here the Indian Ocean stretches to the horizon; here great cliffs drop on three sides to where the waves break in a smother of white and turquoise foam and recede, exposing pink coral reefs. It is easy to understand why Uluwatu is holy, why it is one of the guardian temples of the island of Bali.

Bukit adalah rumah bagi yang ekstrim. Kurang lebih begitu, hotel yang terhitung sebagian besar merupakan hotel terbaik di Bali. Sulit menjadi hotel biasa karena situasi dan lokasinya yang spektakuler. Misalnya Nikko, seperti merpati pos Himalaya yang hilang, bertengger sendiri di tepi jurang dengan pemandangan langsung keluar ke Samudra Hindia. Bulgari tidak begitu dekat dengan tepi tebing, tetapi kolam renangnya berada diambang tebing. Anda bahkan benar-benar dapat bersandar pada sisi tebing sambil menikmati cocktail kesukaan Anda.

Kini bukan hanya peselancar yang telah mengunjungi Bukit. Pe-golf sekarang menemukan bahwa Bali memiliki lapangan golf yang baru New Kuta Golf yang berada dalam kawasan Pecatu Indah Resort, dilengkapi dengan hotel, villa dan taman air yang semuanya memiliki pemandangan laut dan dataran rendah Bali.

provided by a male choir and not the traditional gamelan orchestra. The dancers’ movements acted out to the “kecak kecak” chants and surrounded by the swaying handwaving chorus, with the sun dipping below the horizon in the distance, all contribute to a spectacular and magical scene.

A guardian of a more commercial nature is appearing on The Bukit. With only its head finished but nevertheless now on view, the northern slopes of The Bukit are soon to be the location for the Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK) statue. Like the Sphinx, or pyramids, it’s possibly someone’s wish for immortality – the scale of the project would seem so – when completed it will stand higher than The Statue of Liberty. To be painted in gold it depicts the Hindu God Wishnu riding the fabled Garuda bird. For the moment drive and and gaze in awe at how a limestone hill is being carved up and wonder why … then think of the pharaohs.

The Bukit is home to the extreme. No less so, the hotels that are counted as some of the best in Bali. It’s hard to be ordinary in such a setting. The Nikko, for example, like a lost Himalayan homing pigeon, perches itself on the edge of a cliff with uninterrupted views out into the Indian ocean. Bulgari is not as close to the cliff’s edge, though its pool is. You can actually lean on the edge of the cliff while sipping on your favourite cocktail, contemplating how long it would take your maraschino cherry to hit the sands below.

It’s not only the surfers who have taken to The Bukit. Golfers are now discovering that Bali has a new golf course and what’s its name? The new Kuta Golf Course – that resides within the Pecatu Indah (estate) of hotels, villas and waterparks that all have speactacular views of the ocean and Bali below.

Akan tetapi, semua hal tersebut akan terlupakan saat upacara adat. Ketika Anda berkendara di jalan, melewati desa kecil, hal yang tidak biasa untuk menemukan prosesi penduduk desa dengan pakaian adat mereka yang terang dan spektakuler.

Hal yang cukup sering adalah upacara atau perayaan untuk menandai tahap-tahap dalam kehidupan anak muda. Persembahan buah, bunga dan makanan untuk pesta terlihat di sekitar pura desa. Pria mengenakan pakaian tradisional. Gadis muda mengenakan pakaian bermotif daun emas dan hiasan kepala megah berbunga dan anting-anting emas. Pendeta memercikkan air suci dan bunga. Inilah Bali, sama seperti tempat lain di sekitar pulau ini.

Tetapi jika Anda suka berada jauh dari keramaian dan tidak menyukai perjalanan panjang, Bukit adalah pilihan yang sangat dianjurkan. Mudah diakses dari Kuta atau Sanur dan hanya selemparan batu dari Nusa Dua. Dan dari ketinggian, di hari yang cerah, Anda hampir bisa melihat Bali secara keseluruhan.

But we haven’t spoken about the people who inhabit The Bukit, and it’s they who also contribute to the colour and charm of the place. We have to remember that The Bukit is different to rest of Bali – not blessed with the rich soil and water of the island proper. Water seeps through limestone, making it impossible to grow crops in all but the wet season. There are no rice fields; for centuries the inhabitants have depended on dry cultivation techniques and the sea to eke out a difficult livelihood. Life was hard and bred a rugged bunch.

But that is all forgotten at festival time. If you drive along the roads of The Bukit, through the many small villages – almost like hamlets – it’s not unusual to come across processions of villagers in their bright and spectacular festival attire or even witness a ceremony.

A fairly frequent occurrence are ceremonies or celebrations to mark the stages in the life of the young. Offerings of fruit and flowers and foods for a feast are seen in the vicinity of the village temples. Men are dressed in ceremonial robes.

Young maidens wear magnificent robes of cloths patterned in gold leaf, with gold earrings and gold headdresses of flowers. Priests sprinkle holy water and flowers.

Here is Bali as it is elsewhere on the island.

But if you fancy getting away from the crowds and can’t face a long drive, The Bukit is an easy and highly recommended accommodation option. It’s easily accessible from Kuta or Sanur and is just a stone’s throw from Nusa Dua. And from the height of those stones, on a clear day, you can almost see all of Bali.

Beberapa tahun lalu Pariwisata Queensland meluncurkan sebuah kampanye iklan untuk Gold Coast di bawah bendera “Very Chic - Very GC “; mungkin tepat untuk Melbourne tetapi bagaimana dengan daerah utara Byron Bay, lagi pula siapa yang ingin chic saat Anda dapat bersenang-senang.

A few years ago Queensland Tourism launched an advertising campaign for the Gold Coast under the banner ‘Very Chic – Very GC’; apt for Melbourne maybe but questionable for areas north of Byron Bay, and anyway who wants chic when you’re having a good time.

Surfers Paradise (atau para Surfer seperti pada umumnya lebih dikenal) merupakan central hub dari Gold Coast, garis tipis pantai yang dikelilingi oleh gedung tinggi apartemen, bar dan tempat-tempat wisata bertema, serta hanya satu jam berkendara ke sebelah selatan Brisbane. Para surfer telah menjadikan Goald Coast sebagai salah satu pilihan tujuan wisata keluarga di Australia yang diperuntukan bagi semua generasi dengan sejumlah atraksi menarik seperti Sea world, Dream world, Warner Brothers Movie World dan tempat iconic Currumbin wildlife.

Surfers Paradise (or Surfers as it is commonly known) is the central hub of the Gold Coast, a thin strip of beachfront high-rise apartment buildings, bars and tourist attractions about an hour’s drive south of Brisbane. The Gold Coast, with Surfers as its capital, has been the Australian family holiday destination of choice for generations with attractions including a host of theme parks (Sea world, Dream world, Warner Brothers Movie world) and the iconic Currumbin wildlife Sanctuary.

Take the Latin American influence out of South Beach Florida, add a lot of XXXX (a local beer pronounced fourex) and you’ve got something pretty close to Australia’s Gold Coast.

Usually you can be forgiven for assuming anywhere that has to spell out precisely how chic it is, is going to be about as elegant as Courtney Love after a three-day bender. To be fair, the Gold Coast is somewhere in between, not quite ass but not quite class either.

The Gold Coast is the only place in the world where I have seen an ‘investment firm’ advertising its services by using a dog in suit as a mascot. However, as the dog was pictured using a cell phone and smoking a cigarette it’s possible he was a smarter investment advisor than you would immediately assume.

Surfers is definitely an eating, drinking and lazing holiday destination.

The beach itself is wide and clean. The best time to hit the beach is the morning due to the sea breeze that usually starts up in the early afternoon. Afternoons are best spent by the pool or in a bar close to the beach.

Sundays can best be spent doing what many of the locals do: Carrara markets have everything from fresh and cheap fruit and veggies straight from the farm to trinkets, souvenirs and garments that cater to an eclectic rather than aesthetic taste. Equally as entertaining is a walk through the Surfers heartland of Cavill Avenue with its buskers, foodies and international sightseers – many of whom are from the middle east and Asia.

Eating out is generally more expensive than in Sydney. There are hundreds of restaurants in Surfers ranging from dodgy kebab shops to $150 a head joints. You’ll find ‘family favourites’ like Hooters, Sizzlers

Surfers is (some would say thankfully) a unique place. As you can now fly there from almost anywhere in Australia (now has its own international airport located at Coolangatta), and accommodation is plentiful and cheap in the off season, it makes an excellent place to escape Sydney and Melbourne winters to hang out on the beach and even get a tan.

If you’re looking for somewhere to laze about in the sun for a few days, drink and eat just a little too much and delve into a few good books, then the Gold Coast is an excellent destination for anyone, local or international.

Two new members of TransNusa management team,

Bayu Susanto & Mike Benen Sebelum keterlibatannya dalam industri penerbangan, Bayu Sutanto adalah seorang bankir di beberapa bank terkemuka. Kemudian bergabung dengan TransNusa sebagai Managing Director pada Januari 2011, juga pernah menjabat sebagai Managing Director maskapai penerbangan swasta terkemuka selama tiga tahun. Visinya adalah menjadika TransNusa memiliki ijin operator udara (AOC - air operator certificate) dan sebuah maskapai penerbangan regional di Bali dan Nusa Tenggara. Dengan ijin angkutan udara komersial dan AOC, TransNusa menjadi maskapai penerbangan yang sangat mengutamakan keselamatan, keamanan, pelayanan serta memperhatikan kepuasan pelanggan. Dengan gelar MBA dari Washington State University pada tahun 1995, Bayu Susanto telah mengikuti banyak pelatihan kepemimpinan dan manajemen di luar negeri serta aktif terlibat dalam INACA (Indonesia Air Carriers Association) sebagai Ketua Air Charter.

Mike Benen bergabung dengan TransNusa sebagai Technical Direktur pada bulan Juli 2011 yang memiliki banyak pengalaman dalam pemeliharaan pesawat terutama armada Fokker di Indonesia maupun di luar negeri. Dengan keahliannya, Mike Benen akan bertanggung jawab atas armada TransNusa ke tingkat keselamatan yang lebih tinggi dan handal. Dia tinggal di Indonesia lebih dari 12 tahun dan dapat berbicara bahasa Indonesia dan Jawa. Ia lahir di Brisbane dan dibesarkan di Belanda. Dengan pengalaman global dan keahlian profesional, TransNusa akan terus membuat langkah maju dengan fokus utama regional player dalam tujuannya menjadi maskapai paling handal serta mengutamakan keselamatan penerbangan.

Before joining TransNusa as Managing Director on January 2011, Bayu Sutanto was the Managing Director of a leading private airline for three years, and before that he was a banker in some prominent banks. His vision is to transform TransNusa into an AOC (air operator certificate) holder and a regional airline in Bali and Nusa Tenggara.

Starting with the air transport commercial license and an AOC soon, his mission is to transform TransNusa into an airline that highly promotes safety, security, service with a dedication to a high level of customer satisfaction.

Mike Benen joinied TransNusa as Technical Director in July 2011 even though he had previously indirectly worked with TransNusa in preparing the new fleet that is currently in operation. He has a wealth of experience in aircraft maintenance, especially Fokker, for fleets in Indonesia as well as abroad. With his experience and expertise his will be the task of maintaining the TransNusa fleet to a high level of safety and reliability. With his global experience and professional expertise, TransNusa will continue to make giant strides in its objective of becoming the region’s most reliable and safety conscious airline.

Pada saat soft opening mendatang, rencananya kami akan mengoperasikan lantai dasar dan lantai 2 terlebih dahulu ujar Bpk Suratman Kurdi selaku Gendral Manager T-More Hotel & Lounge. Beliau juga berharap semoga T-More Hotel & Lounge menjadi leading hotel berbintang di Kupang, guna mendukung pembangunan kepariwisataan di NTT, serta membuka lahan pekerjaan bagi masyarakat Nusa Tenggara Timur.
