Lombok-Sumbawa is situated in the Province of West Nusa Tenggara, two islands that make up part of the vast Indonesian archipelago. Lombok is rapidly becoming one of Indonesia’s most popular tourist destinations, and the Government and people of Lombok are now preparing themselves for “Visit Lombok Sumbawa 2012”. We have formed this E-book as an information tool to give you a full range of information about the two islands. Lombok and Sumbawa are said have everything and anyone who has spent any time there will most definitely agree. Lombok’s location is easily accessible with its new international airport, and offers a bounty of activities from the land and sea. You may find yourself trekking in Rinjani National Park, the home of one of Indonesia’s highest active volcanoes, and Lombok’s icon Mount Rinjani. Swimming and snorkeling on the mainland’s rugged, natural white sand coastlines from the famous tourist beach of Senggigi to Lombok’s Kuta Beach, all equal to the best unspoiled beaches of the world. Legendary surfing breaks like Desert Point, Gerupuk, and Bangko Bangko bring keen surfers from around the world, as do the world class diving sites such as Gili Nanggu – South West of Lombok, and the famous three Gili (islands) of Trawangan, Meno and Air just north of Senggigi. To the east of Lombok lies the less-visited yet equally spectacular island of Sumbawa where volcanic ridges, jungles of rain forest, and rice terraces drop down to secluded, natural white sandy bays. Visitors can enjoy surfing at Lakey beach, climb the historic volcano of Mt Tambora, and explore sleepy backwaters and peaceful villages. Hidden away in the jungles of Pulau Moyo (‘Pulau’ is Indonesian for island), the exclusive Amanwana is a haven for diving and snorkeling enthusiasts.
Talented artisans weave and throw pots of export quality, an interior designers dream. Lombok and Sumbawa are also world famous for their exceptional quality of pearls that can be found in specialist shops where there is something to suit all budgets and tastes. Last but not least, I wish to indulge you in the marvelous cultures of Lombok and Sumbawa. Action and Adventure Trekking Bali’s Mt Agung poked through some clouds into the blood-red heavens above.” “The track down to the lake started by hugging the wall of the crater. There was a steep drop on our right and some tricky bits where the track went over a boulder or was interrupted by a fissure. I was elated by the feeling of using a completely different set of muscles to those that had been pummeled on the way up. It was wonderful relief to give my legs a change – nearly as good as a rest.”
Lombok’s mightly volcano, Mt Rinjani, at 3,726 meters, waits to be climbed as a safe but arduous 3-day trek to view the turquoise waters of its crater lake. Or it can be climbed literally close-to-the-edge for an attack on the high summit. Trekking Rinjani – possibly the most spectacular high country scenery in South East Asia. Rinjani received the World Legacy Award in 2004 from National Geographic traveler and conservation international. Excerpts from a Rinjani climb “Thankfully we kept going for we were treated to a real volcanic spectacle; imagine sunset colors, and directly in front of us Rinjani’s summit like a shark fin thrusting upwards from the vertical, craggy walls of the crater. Behind was a panorama of Lombok’s west coast with her coral island floating in a tranquil sea. Even further away 06
Surfing Powerful Indian ocean swells strike reefs and well up, forming perfect waves that peel off to the left and right, taking their riders with them. Unlike other hot surf locations, crowds are not a problem. Locations such as Bangko - Bangko (Desert Point), Mawi and Ekas head a list of world class breaks. On a good day Bangko - Bangko, is reputed to be the best left breaking wave on the planet. Tubular perfection is what most wave riders seek. On Lombok surfers go deep as they explore perfection in the moving tunnels of the watery realm.
Fishing, Diving and Golf Diving
The Red Sea and Great Barrier Reef may have their coral, but for waters teeming with an astounding variety of marine life it’s hard to beat the translucent waters around Lombok’s three small Gili islands. The mélange and abundance of marine life that finds its home in these waters is among the richest in the world. It’s this sheer profusion of sea life that draws divers from all over the world.
Game-fishing
Says one avid fisherman who fishes from his own traditionally styled outriggers: “ We may not have the latest fish catching technology, but we do have the fish. And while game-fishing is still in its infancy and relatively uncharted, this adds to the excitement. We surely can boast some of the best game-fishing in the world today.”
Golf
Every resort destination needs a golf course. What could be more idyllic than a course gracing the water’s edge or one nestled in the foothills of a mountain range? Lombok’s magnificent courses are professionally maintained with plenty of water and ravines to test one’s golfing skills. No city skylines anywhere and with the cooling sea breezes and mountain air the temperature is just right. 07
The Weave
Woven Cloth
Mataram, Cakranegara, Ampenan and Sweta make up Lombok’s four-part capital, business centre, former port town and market. In a quaint home-spun village called Pringasela, nestled in the cool and quiet mountain foothills beautiful hand-woven cloths are created using only natural plants and primitive tools. Pounded and boiled, striking yellows, blues, and the blacks and reds of Lombok come vibrantly to life. On the flatlands another village called songket. Here the village women dress in traditional black Sasak garb as they operate their looms demonstrating unique skills that are highly prized among the Sasaks.

Unique Pottery Lombok’s terracotta pottery products now circle the globe. Still utilizing time-tested and traditional methods their uses and unique designs are now anything but traditional. Candleholders, vases, lamps and plates make up just some of the beautiful designs. Three pottery villages betray their own distinct styles and methods. But potting in Lombok is usually the domain of the village women. Men market the products. Clay still arrives by horse-drawn cart. It’s later pounded into a dough but there is no such thing as a potter’s wheel. Instead layers are continually added to the original piece of dough while the maker herself moves around the object pressing it into the desired shape.
Terracotta Hot Pots The pots are again left to dry before they are scraped with a black stone so that the surface becomes shiny and ready for the next drying process. This takes place in the hot sun and takes almost a full day; it even involves a brushing in the streaming hot midday sun which further improves the luster. The pots are then ready to be fired. The final touch is to ensure the right color. If dark red (runtang) color is desired, hot pots are brushed with extract of tamarind seeds which have been prepared beforehand. For another color – called red flick – the hot pots are simply flicked with a husk. Another unique color known as ‘Peter color’ (simply because someone called Peter found the technique of making it) is created by baking the pots with husk inside the oven. And of course for natural color nothing is done apart from the baking itself. 09

WELCOME TO
SENGGIGI BEACH Two glistening bays separated by a thrust of white coral jutting out into the ocean form the centre of an area now known as Senggigi that is a 4-kilometer strip of beachfront, restaurants and luxury resorts. The grand dame of Lombok’s resort areas, Senggigi, with its white sandy beaches and small palm-fringed bays, still boasts the broadest range of accommodation possibilities, restaurants and entertainment facilities on the island. Restaurants and small cafes line the colorful main beach road. The views up and down the coast and stretching out to sea as far as Bali are simply majestic. Swimming off the beach is safe. The reef is also home to a variety of marine life and beautiful coral and is ideal for relaxed snorkeling. Windsurfing in the bay is another activity. Visit the very evocative temple/shrine that sits on the black outcrop of rock that reached out into the sea of Batu Bolong, three kilometers from central Senggigi. It can be particularly enchanting when Hindu devotees make their offerings at dusk, and Senggigi presents one of her crimson sunsets with the silhouette of Bali’s Mt Agung faintly visible in the distance.

EAST LOMBOK The aroma common to most fish markets, the beehive of seaside activity, the colorful play of watery reflections greet you at Tanjung Luar. But this is no covered market. Selling takes place right by the blue sea shore. You’ll see fisherman arriving tired from many days spent on the open ocean. You’ll see arrivals from other island on an inter-island taxi service of small sampans (traditional canoes). You’ll see the salt sellers, kids fishing off the main jetty, moored vessel receiving a new coat of paint. You’ll se barracuda, sword fish, sea bream, snapper and tiny sardines. But most exciting of all, you’ll see sharks. Every morning, in an activity that has been acted out for many years, a shark catch is auctioned in an open room a short distance away from the sea. NORTH LOMBOK Falling light and an ever-changing landscape reveals itself in the form of selected excerpts like the mischievous wink of some Grecian temptress luring unwary sailors. The almost hypnotic chants of the muezzin call the faithful to prayer call the faithful to prayer in the mosques dotted up and down the length of the valley. The echoes and echoes-of-the-echoes from each mosque join in a continuous chorus that flows up and down the valley, bouncing off the sheer walls and gargantuan lava outcrops of the crater walls. And then it strikes you. The high cheekbones, skin reddened by cooler winds; brightly colored woolen shawls draped round shoulders as if in some hitherto unknown Himalayan village. Steaming water cascades with an incredible force – hardly surprising when you consider that it runs straight off one of the highest peaks in South East Asia. Bathe in what must be the cleanest and freshest water in Indonesia. Stroll up the road to one of Lombok’s few remaining Waktu Telu villages with its thatched huts, megalithic appearance and primitively garbed villagers. GILI TRAWANGAN ISLAND It’s true the Gilis do have a lot of coral, that’s why they have so much fish, and their blue coral is famous in its own right. The Gilis also have the odd wreck or two and water of the clear and blue variety – but more than 3,500 species of fish is the real attraction. Most divers want to see sharks. Generally within a day’s diving, the reefs sharks, which have no interest in humans, are spotted. You’ll also see manta ray, barracuda, green turtle, clown fish and Moray eel (not dangerous). The orange and white-striped clown fish, the brightly colored parrot fish and the majestic Moorish idol also form a part of moving, living beauty. Two species of turtle, the Green turtle and the Hawksbill, make their home in these rich waters, and although they are on the endangered species list, both are commonly seen on dive and snorkeling trips. And of course there is the stationary life, the beautiful coral reefs themselves, colonies of living organisms which are continuously growing and building magnificently shaped abodes for the marine life to live among.

GILI AIR ISLAND It’s true the Gilis do have a lot of coral, that’s why they have so much fish, and their blue coral is famous in its own right. The Gilis also have the odd wreck or two and water of the clear and blue variety – but more than 3,500 species of fish is the real attraction. Most divers want to see sharks. Generally within a day’s diving, the reefs sharks, which have no interest in humans, are spotted. You’ll also see manta ray, barracuda, green turtle, clown fish and Moray eel (not dangerous). The orange and white-striped clown fish, the brightly colored parrot fish and the majestic Moorish idol also form a part of moving, living beauty. Two species of turtle, the Green turtle and the Hawksbill, make their home in these rich waters, and although they are on the endangered species list, both are commonly seen on dive and snorkeling trips. And of course there is the stationary life, the beautiful coral reefs themselves, colonies of living organisms which are continuously growing and building magnificently shaped abodes for the marine life to live among.
