Members of the National Team and the Junior National Team competed in the USA Luge Start Championships Aug. 18 on the refrigerated start track at the team’s headquarters on Church Street, beginning their efforts to compete on the international stage this winter.

Three-time Olympians Tucker West and Summer Britcher won the men’s and women’s singles events, respectively. Zack DiGregorio and Sean Hollander won in men’s doubles, and Chevonne Forgan and Sophie Kirkby won in women’s doubles.

The National Team is expected to start sliding on tracks in late October in Europe before the World Cup season begins on Dec. 8 and 9 at Mount Van Hoevenberg in Lake Placid.

Saranac Lake History In The Making

Alarge crowd gathered on the lawn of Dr. Edward Livingston Trudeau’s former home and office on Aug. 1, as Historic Saranac Lake hosted a groundbreaking ceremony on their way to turning the building on the corner of Main and Church Streets into an expanded museum site for HSL’s bounty of artifacts, ephemera and stories.

Nearly the whole team of people who made

this happen were there, which was appropriate because HSL Executive Director Amy Catania said it’s been a community effort all along, with engineers, donors, volunteers, board members, construction groups, consultants and elected officials contributing. The team turned over some dirt with golden shovels — a symbolic move, but the work is not far away. Project Manager Matt Viskovich said crews

will start on Monday, beginning with some demolition on the inside and outside of the building, and repairing masonry in the foundation.

A crew started cleaning out the inside of the building and restoring the historically accurate windows earlier this summer.

Though the building has been modernized and was used as a medical office until 2019, almost anything added after 1915 will go away. HSL plans to keep anything that was there during Trudeau’s lifetime, while he was using the building — from its construction in 1894 to around 1915.

Catania is especially excited that the building will soon have its original dark red wood clapboards, instead of the powder blue vinyl siding it is currently wrapped in.

Rehabbing a building, especially to historic specifications, is expensive. But HSL has raised $5.4 million to bring the building back to life. That includes almost $2 million through 10 grants from

the state and federal governments, $1.4 million in historic preservation tax credits and includes donations.

But the fundraising hasn’t ended. Catania said they’re still raising funds for new exhibits and increased accessibility at the existing Saranac Laboratory museum next door, what is called “Phase 2” of HSL’s plans.

As journalists snapped photos, Catania remarked on how these images of the people gathered there are now in the public record, becoming part of history in the making.

She hopes that the museum will play a more integral role in the future of the community by presenting it with a more full history of the people who made Saranac Lake what it is today.

Adirondack Land Trust buys scenic land at Loj Road

From, Gwen Neill, Ophelia Bailey, Etta Neill and Sverre Bailey jump for joy on the field located at the corner of State Route 73 and Adirondack Loj Road. The field, now owned by the Adirondack Land Trust, was farme d by their grandparents Ron and Beth Edgley from 1983 to 2012 and was then known as the Windy Mountain Fa rm. The Edgleys sold New York Certified Seed Potatoes up and down the eastern seaboard for more than 30 years.

The Adirondack Land Trust has purchased a scenic vista off of Adirondack Loj Road in Lake Placid with plans to develop the land into a recreation and conservation area. The large, open grassland field on state Route 73 is at the entrance to the Adirondack Loj

Road — not far from one of the most popular trailheads in the High Peaks region, managed by the Adirondack Mountain Club. The land has been owned by the McBurney family for around 60 years. The property is a popular spot for photography because of its scenic views of the High

Peaks. ALT purchased the 187 acres in the summer for $2.365 million.

ALT Executive Director Mike Carr said after years of the family keeping the land open and wild, two brothers in the McBurney family approached the ALT and asked them to buy it and preserve it in perpetuity. Carr said the ALT was honored and agreed.

“They really wanted to see it remain open,” Carr said.

The land has been under the names of Andrew Sloan McBurney Trust and Lane F. McBurney, according to Essex County tax records. ALT will keep the land private while it studies the landscape and prepares for a planning process to broaden access, which they say will include community stakeholder input.

They plan to build an accessible trail network in the wooded area of the property, on the West Branch of the AuSable River. These proposed trails would be wide, durable surfaces on low-grade inclines conducive to wheelchairs, strollers, walking aids and “those who prefer a walk in the woods to an alpine scramble.”

Carr said they’ll likely also build a parking lot, install signage and may need to build bridges.

“This vista provides a first impression and lasting memory for millions of visitors and is a source of

pride and inspiration for local residents,” Carr said in a statement. “In its breathtaking grandeur, the view forms an indelible bond with the Adirondack landscape. The Adirondack Land Trust will ensure the property’s natural and scenic values are forever conserved. ... The location close to town will enhance quality of life in ways that can help attract and retain residents.”

The ALT nonprofit organization plans to continue to raise an additional $2.5 million through donations and grants for “long-term management and stewardship costs.”

The field is a former potato field, which was farmed by the Edgley family from 1983 to 2012 and was known as the Windy Mountain Farm. Now, Carr said it is hay. ALT may turn it into plants for pollinators in the future, he said.

You’ve found a new home, secured a loan and closed on the property. It might seem like the hardest part is over. But moving can be a huge logistical challenge, beginning with how to deal with everything you’ve accumulated over the years. Then there’s booking a moving company, transporting your things to the next place and then getting it all into your new home.

PLAN IT OUT

Begin by deciding how you’ll move everything. Are you going to hire a moving company, or rent a truck and move it yourself? Will family and friends help out? If not, there will be added expense — and that figure can skyrocket, depending on how much and how far you are moving. Moving companies typically require long lead times in order to fit moving jobs into their busy schedules. If you do it yourself, you might save some money, but it can be more difficult to coordinate. You also won’t have access to pros who know how to pack and ship your belongings so they arrive undamaged. There are also insurance options available with moving companies in case the worst happens.

BEFORE THE MOVE

It’s easy to get caught up in the details of your new life as moving day draws near. There are utilities to turn on and home insurance policies to update. You might even be picking out new furniture, drapes or decor. But you’ll also have to get everything packed and ready to go on an abbreviated time frame, since most closings happen over a period of 30 to 45 days. Take stock of everything you have, building an inventory of belongings — including furniture, personal items, clothing and appliances. Contracted moving companies will often base their estimated cost based on how

As you go about packing, consider selling or donating unneeded items, or things that haven’t been used over a lengthy period of time. Next, begin assembling boxes of various sizes, packing tape and bubble wrap so the process goes as smoothly as possible. Running out of these needed items will only lead to frustrating delays.
