A note from our Clergy
Throughout the past year and especially the past 6 months we have felt immense gratitude to our congregants in their flexibility and understanding and willingness to learn new technologies. We feel immense gratitude for our volunteers who are helping us ensure our programs are still happening. We are thankful to our staff for adapting to new methods of programming and technology, and to our board (both Executive and Foundation) and our COVID-19 Advisory Committee for their leadership and guidance in this unprecedented time.
Nothing can replicate being together in person, but we're determined to create a new kind of shared experience. One that will lift our hopes, our prayers and our bonds to one another. We adapt now as our tradition has always adapted, facing wilderness in Torah to wilderness in exile with resilience. As we prepare to gather virtually, we pray that this new year finds us and the world in good health and peace. L’Shanah Tovah,
Harold J. Kravitz

“The Annual Recognition of Community supports the reality that you belong not just to a synagogue, but a sacred community that celebrates your joys, supports you in difficult times as these and is always here for you whenever you feel the need to be in community.
When you read all the names in this book, please try to feel the heartfelt connection of all the people listed who have given time and resources to our community with a whole and loving heart. May you have a healthy and sweet New Year, Miranda Weisbuch

In 5781, we celebrate One Adath, one kehillah , our sacred community. Whether virtual or in-person there are always many opportunities to engage in learning, spirituality and community. As you will read, gemilut chasadim - acts of kindness - lift up the entire Adath community. Thousands of volunteer hours and gifts of tzedakah honor and create the legacy of our members’ values, including education, inclusion, innovation, leadership, brick and mortar needs, and scholarship support. As a result, we are Many People, Many Moments, One Community, One Adath; a vibrant, spiritual and caring community that we can celebrate and be proud of.

“Kindness” was the overall theme at Gan Shelanu during the past year. Every month families were encouraged to participate in a “tzedakah project” with their children. School supplies were collected for needy students; 500 pounds of peanut butter and jelly was dropped off at a local food shelf; hundreds of stuffed animals were delivered to Hennepin County Medical Center’s “Hug an Animal” Program; over 100 pounds of candy was sent to U.S. military personnel overseas as part of “Operation Gratitude”; and Gan families delivered dozens of decorated Hanukkah cookies to homebound congregants.

The Shem Tov Award
was established in 1959 to honor a congregant who had voluntarily provided extraordinary service to the Adath Jeshurun Congregation. Each year, the past Award recipients of this honor select a recipient for the current year’s Shem Tov Award. In some years, no award was given. As we all know too well, we are living in a unique time. Even though we cannot physically be together, our Adath community continues to thrive because of the hard work and commitment of our clergy, staff, lay leadership and volunteers. Our congregation is meeting this challenge with compassion, thoughtfulness, wisdom and creativity to maintain Adath as our spiritual home and provide support for all. In this unprecedented year, the Shem Tov Committee will not be selecting an individual to receive the award. Instead, the Committee chooses to extend our recognition, honor and appreciation to everyone at Adath and in our broader community who are working to fight the COVID-19 pandemic, to keep us safe and healthy. Also, the Shem Tov Committee members provided donations for a one time contribution to Adath to be used to address COVID-19 needs of the congregation.

In Recognition of Directed Giving Your gift to the Annual L’Chaim Campaign provides essential funding to every part of Adath. It is the single most important gift you can make to lift up our Adath community. Directed gifts go even further to strengthen the work of Adath that is most important to you.
L’Chaim, our Annual Giving Campaign supports many projects, services, offerings, and initiatives, including:
B’nai Mitzvah students preparation
Quality educational programming
Gan Shelanu Preschool, where children develop a strong Jewish identity.
Spiritual leaders that make our lives more meaningful
Above and beyond your participation in L’Chaim, donating to a specific area of our Adath community can be a meaningful and rewarding gift. Thank you to everyone who supported our community this past year with your directed gifts. 16
At Minyan we gather in prayer and begin or end the day with tradition and devotion, enveloped in community. As some of us face the challenges of life or a loved one’s passing, morning prayers provide comfort and give us strength. Weekday minyan at 7:20 am and 5:45 pm.

“ZOOM” GALI GALI Before March 13, “zoom” was a term used at the Gan by kids playing with cars and trucks. After that date, “zoom” took on a whole new meaning! When in-person classes were cancelled, zoom class meetings were held three times a week. In addition to class meetings, Shabbat with Hazzan Joanna and Challah Monster was livestreamed and Milk and Cookies story time with Rabbi Weininger occurred weekly on Facebook Live. There were scavenger hunts, pizza parties, felt board stories and guessing games. Staff stepped outside their comfort zones and posted videos—how to make a lava lamp, how to bake bread and matzoh, how to paint rocks, how to create an erupting volcano, and so much more! Every day there were “events” for families to enjoy.

CHESED: LOVING KINDNESS It was with Love and Kindness that the Women of Adath celebrated 101 years of dedication to the Adath Jeshurun Congregation through our affiliation with the Women’s League for Conservative Judaism. We began our year with plans for innovative programming and exceptional speakers. However, Minnesota weather and a microscopic bug interfered with those plans. Instead of meetings in the Adult Lounge or the Social Hall, we met via ZOOM. Not quite the same, but at least we were able to see each other! LOVING KINDNESS: Even though all of our plans were cancelled as of January 1st, we recognized our financial commitment to programs within Adath Jeshurun – GAN, USY, Bar/Bat Mitzvah gifts; plus, donations to the Masorti/ Conservative Movement and of course, Torah Fund. LOVING KINDNESS: Special thanks to the clergy and staff of Adath Jeshurun. You have been there for us in ways too numerous to mention. LOVING KINDNESS: Love and kindness – two things we were lucky to have received from our members and the congregation. Thank you for sharing both – we hope you received our feelings in exchange. Love one another – help build a world of kindness. Ruth Harris, Ardis Wexler and Judy Goldstein Co-Presidents

On his last day before retirement, Bernie Goldblatt shared his fondest memories from 20 years as Adath’s Executive Director: “The weddings of my daughters. I think those are my greatest moments. What Adath really means to people is emotional connection, and to see your child start to build her own life – everything we did was leading to that moment – all the things we taught her and the places we took her and the activities she participated in, school and camp and everything. As much as there were many moments professionally, when budgets where balanced and when benefits happened – but my daughters’ weddings. Those were the best."
