Memorial Book YOM KIPPUR 5781 - 2020

When someone you love becomes a memory, the memory becomes a treasure. Author Unknown

Memorbuch Yizkor 5781

We create memorials to prevent us from forgetting the names of people whose lives were an important part of ours. After the First Crusade in Germany, a tradition was started among Jews whereby pamphlets were compiled of lists of people who were martyred and lists of cities where extensive deaths occurred. The idea took hold throughout Central Europe as local Jewish communities printed their own Memorbuchs from year to year, from Yizkor to Yizkor. These Memorbuchs have been the source of important historical data, but also have opened our eyes and hearts to the yearnings of the people who compiled them. Adath Jeshurun Congregation has compiled a Memorial Booklet based on the model of the traditional Memorbuch described above. May the names of our beloved family members and friends be a blessing for all and may all the good that they did in their lifetimes be multiplied by our remembering them at this time and by the actions which we commit to in their memory.

1

We recall with affection those who no longer walk this earth, grateful to God for the gift of their lives for their sweet companionship, and for the cherished memories which endure. May God comfort all who mourn. May He grant them strength to see beyond their sorrow, and sustain them in their grief. Siddur Sim Shalom

We remember our loved ones who have departed‌

2

To perpetuate the memories of our loved ones, we pledge to honor the ideals important to them. Through such deeds, and prayer and remembrance, are their souls bound up in the bonds of life. May these moments of meditation strengthen the ties that link one generation to another.

TZEDAKAH - TEFILLAH - MA’ASIM TOVIM Charity - Prayer - Good Deeds Ways to remember loved ones and perpetuate their memories: ·Attend daily Minyan: Monday-Friday: 7:20 am, Sunday: 9:30 am, SundayThursday: 5:45 pm The daily prayers are more than a venue for the recitation of Mourner’s Kaddish. Prayer is essential for our personal health and vitality, therefore your attendance provides the opportunity to be in touch with your spirituality. · Volunteer for causes that offer meaning and remembrance. · Give tzedakah in honor of a yahrzeit and/or other occasions.

· Establish a Permanent Memorial Fund Making a permanent memorial gift is a wonderful way to honor and remember those we admired, loved and respected. It is also a beautiful demonstration of your devotion and connection to our congregation, our community and our future. Unveiling Ceremony REFLECTION OF DEATH Existence embraces both life and death, and in a way, death is the test of the meaningful life. If death is devoid of meaning, then life is absurd. Life’s ultimate meaning remains obscure unless it is reflected upon in the face of death. REFLECTION The earth inherits that which is mortal. But only the dust returns to the dust. The soul is not abandoned to the grave, the faithful do not suffer oblivion. For the Lord has shown us the way of life. He has planted eternity in our midst, granting us a share in His unending life. He surrounds us with loving kindness, enabling us to cherish hope and to perform good deeds which time cannot destroy. Goodness, love and faith endure from age to age, helping to hasten the kingdom of God in this world. He redeems our life from the grave. His ways are the source of our hope and our comfort. INDIVIDUAL PRAYERS The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. He gives me repose in green meadows. He leads me beside the still waters, He revives my spirit. He guides me on the right path, for that is His nature. Though I walk in the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no harm, for You are with me. Your staff and Your rod comfort me. You prepare a banquet for me in the presence of my foes. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and kindness shall be my portion all the days of my life. And I shall dwell in the House of the Lord forever. Psalm 23 UNVEILING The Lord heals the broken-hearted, and binds up their wounds. Almighty God, Master of mercy, whose compassion endures forever, let neither death nor sorrow have dominion over us. Grant comfort, strength and consolation to those who mourn _________________, as it is written: “The Lord shall be your enduring light, and the days of your mourning shall come to an end.” The covering is removed. Read the stone. Bless this family with love and peace, that they may serve You with a perfect heart. Accept their act of devotion, O Lord, as they consecrate this monument to the memory of _______________with love and respect. May his/her soul be bound up in the bond of life. Amen The unveiling ceremony concludes with Eil Malei Rahamim and Kaddish.

Eil Malei Rahamim

Mourner’s Kaddish Our Creator, the King of kings, delights in life. Because of His love for us and because we are so few, each of us is important in His kingdom. Though we are flesh and blood, we are irreplaceable. When one of the House of Israel dies, there is a loss of glory in His kingdom, and His grandeur is diminished. Therefore, brethren of the House of Israel, all of you who mourn and all of you who remember on this day, let us fix our hearts on our Father in Heaven, our King and our Redeemer, and let us pray for ourselves, and for Him too, that He and His kingdom be hallowed and enhanced, glorified and celebrated. MOURNERS AND THOSE OBSERVING YAHRZEIT RISE: Yit-gadal ve-yit-kadash shmei raba, b’alma divra khir’utei ve-yamlikh mal-khutei be-hayei-khon uve’yomei-khon uvehayei di-khol beit yisrael ba-agala u-vizman kariv v’imru amen. CONGREGATION AND MOURNER: Ye-hei shmei raba meva-rakh l’alam ul’almei’almaya. Memorial Prayer Exalted, compassionate God, grant perfect peace in Your sheltering Presence, among the holy and the pure who shine with the splendor of the firmament, to the soul of our dear _______________who has gone to his/her eternal home. Master of mercy, remember all his/her worthy deeds in the land of the living. May his/her soul be bound up in the bond of life. May his/her memory always inspire us to attain dignity and holiness in life. May he/she rest in peace. And let us say: Amen. Personal meditation Compassionate God, at this time of remembrance I offer my prayers in behalf of ______________. Keep his/her beloved soul in Your providential care. May his/her memory and the goodness which he/she wrought in his/her life find continuity in my life, and unto all eternity. Personal thoughts may be added. Amen.

The Meaning of Kaddis h

In the presence of death, we extol life—the creative force energizing each of us. In the presence of reality, we speak of mystery, of love stronger than death, of memories that turn each day into precious possibility. For lives gone from our midst, for tears shed in deepest affection, for what we have become and hope yet to be, we give assent. We affirm—and in that affirmation, we join with the fellowship of Israel and all humanity. Their loss is ours; ours is theirs. In seeking peace and understanding for ourselves, we promise our own understanding to bring peace to all we meet. And to this hope and promise, we say, Amen.

Chevra Kavod Hamet Adath Jeshurun’s award-winning Chevra Kavod Hamet (Society to Give Honor to the Deceased) was founded in 1977 to honor the deceased and strengthen and comfort the living in our community. Staffed entirely by volunteers, the Chevra provides a traditional Jewish funeral to any Adath member, upon request and at a modest cost. Through the Chevra, members of our Adath community perform final acts of loving kindness for those we knew and loved. Sometimes families do not think of the Chevra Kavod Hamet until a loved one has died. Frequently the wishes of the deceased have not been recorded before that time and may not be remembered in the family’s time of grief. With this in mind, the Chevra Kavod Hamet has developed a document call the “Expression of Guidance” which is used to request Chevra services. When prepared prior to one’s death, the “Expression of Guidance” can guide surviving family members to the Chevra and, in doing so, simplify decision-making at a time of sadness and grief. Surviving family members can also request Chevra services. To receive further information about the Chevra Kavod Hamet or the Expression of Guidance form, please call the synagogue office at 952.545.2424.

Where Will I Be? Do not come when I am dead To sit beside a low green mound, or bring the first gay daffodils, because I love them so, for I shall not be there. You cannot find me there. Where will I be? I will be reflected from the bright eyes of little children; in the smile of a bride under the chupah; in the flames of Shabbat candles at the family simcha. I will warm your hands through the glow of the winter fire; I will soothe you with the drop of the rain on the roof; I will speak to you out of the wisdom of the sages; and make your heart leap with the rhythm of a hora; I will flood your soul with the flaming radiance of the sunrise, and bring you peace in the tender rose and gold of the after-sunset, all these have made me happy. They are a part of me; I shall become a part of them. Author unknown
