words by Alasdair Ross Policy and Consultations Officer ACVO TSI & AVA
If your organisation works with vulnerable people, you should start preparing for these new ways of working.
The Disclosure (Scotland) Act 2020 strikes a balance between safeguarding the public and enabling individuals to move forward from past offences Developed through extensive stakeholder consultations and parliamentary scrutiny, the Act aims to simplify the disclosure process while upholding robust public safety measures
The Act introduces several key changes to Disclosure Scotland's services affecting disclosure checks,
PVG scheme memberships, and referral powers for relevant authorities.
Changes to Disclosure Checks:
- A streamlined system with two new disclosure levels: Level 1 and Level 2 These will replace the current basic, standard, enhanced, and PVG levels, offering a clearer and more proportionate approach.
- An avenue for independent review of specific disclosure content, ensuring accuracy and fairness
- The ability to explain the context of certain spent or childhood convictions before their disclosure, promoting a more nuanced understanding
Transforming PVG Scheme
Membership:
- Mandatory PVG membership for all roles involving regulated work with children and protected adults, effective April 1st, 2025.
- The phasing out of lifetime PVG memberships from April 1st, 2026 These will be replaced with a renewable five-year membership cycle. This staged rollout allows for a

smooth transition for existing PVG members
Enhanced Powers for Disclosure Scotland:
- The authority to bar individuals from working with vulnerable groups following a thorough investigation.
- The power to impose temporary conditions on individuals while investigations are ongoing These conditions will cease upon reaching a final decision on barring.
Expanded Referral Powers for Local Authorities:
- The Act empowers local councils and integration boards to make referrals to Disclosure Scotland This strengthens safeguards for individuals who arrange their own care and support through selfdirected support or direct employment models
Disclosure Scotland has promised a smooth transition for all stakeholders and ACVO colleagues are here to assist with information where we can. We encourage you to visit Disclosure Scotland’s website for ongoing updates, detailed explanations of the new disclosure levels, and further information regarding the changes outlined above. In particular we advise signing up to their mailing list to ensure you receive updates in a timely manner

ACVO invites qualified and experienced individuals and firms to submit tenders for the Feasibility Study for the Establishment of a Third Sector Hub in Aberdeen This study aims to assess the viability and practicality of creating a centralised space for voluntary organisations to work together, share services and enhance their collective impact on the community.
In establishing a Third Sector Hub, ACVO would seek to develop a dynamic and supportive ecosystem that empowers organisations in the third sector to work more efficiently, effectively, and collectively for the benefit of the diverse communities of people and place in Aberdeen.
The Scottish Government has launched a consultation which could have a significant impact on the budgets of organisations who work with volunteers They are seeking views on whether Disclosure Scotland should introduce fee discounts for certain groups applying for Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) scheme membership and whether they should introduce fees for scheme membership for volunteers. Part of the proposal is that scheme membership for volunteers would

“Some of you may
remember that a few years back I wrote an article
in
ACVO News on the issues being faced by third sector organisations when it came to them setting up bank accounts”
Have your say: charity banking challenges survey 2024
At that time I said that “one of the most frustrating rites of passage any new Third Sector Organisation must endure is opening a bank account. This has never been a bundle of joys but since Covid, the crisis in Third Sector Banking seems to have worsened ”
Unfortunately since then, these issues have prevailed with OSCR and the The Chief Executive Officers of the UK Charity Regulators jointly penning an open letter directed at the UK’s main high street banks in 2023 which highlighted some of the main challenges for charities, including: a reduction in bespoke banking services; experiences of administrative delays; and feedback that online banking is not designed to match with the ways in which charities operate
At that time OSCR Chief Executive Maureen Mallon said “As regulators, we are concerned about the issues some charities face in their banking relationships The difficulties encountered hinder the invaluable work charities do It is imperative that banks take our recommendations forward to streamline processes, educate staff, and ensure an environment that enables charities to focus making a positive impact in society ”
NCVO and the Charity Finance Group recently launched their 2024 survey of charities’ experiences of banking and are inviting all voluntary organisations to complete the survey to have their say By sharing your views and experiences, you’ll help third sector bodies to advocate for better banking services for voluntary organisations
Please take the 10-15 mins needed to complete the survey and submit your response before it closes at 12pm on Wednesday 15 May 2024 - you can find more details via the survey link at https://bit.ly/3ycqrfu

The Rising Star award marked a double win for Nicole who was also voted by staff as Grampian’s Great Colleague of the Year in 2023, presented annually to the Association’s most inspiring colleague Nicole’s career has seen her working mainly in housing and social work environments Her main highlight has been finding a career where she is able to feel daily job satisfaction, provide support to tenants facing various challenges and to learn and develop every day.
Nicole said: “I have found an organisation I feel privileged and fortunate to be a part of and which works within the same values I look for in a job. What is important is the difference I can make to improve people’s lives by supporting them ”
The varying opportunities Nicole has had and the different people she has been able to support has enabled her to continue to fulfil her passion

Children in Scotland reveals full programme for Annual
Children in Scotland has revealed details of the packed programme for its upcoming Annual Conference 2024, with
keynote speeches and workshops set to address the sector’s most challenging and important issues
Held on Wednesday 29 and Thursday 30 May at Murrayfield Stadium, Edinburgh, the flagship event will bring together delegates, partners and supporters from across the children’s sector, with a range of keynote speakers, exhibitors, workshops and networking sessions available over the two days
One of the highlights of the programme, on the first day of the conference, Jimmy Paul, Head of the Scottish Violence Reduction Unit, will use his keynote to discuss the growing concern of behaviour in schools, while exploring the many challenges faced by young people today
With a varied career managing health and social care services, and having co-chaired the Workforce Group on the Independent Care Review, Jimmy is uniquely placed to examine the factors many experts believe are contributing to behavioural issues, including the fallout from the pandemic, which saw an entire generation of children missing out on crucial years of education, socialisation and connection, the current cost of living crisis, and increased use of social media across all age ranges
As well as offering evidence-based solutions, his speech will outline an emerging vision for the future, providing delegates with an informative and inspirational talk, which will focus on promoting collaboration across the sector.
Jimmy Paul said: “I am delighted to be speaking at the Children in Scotland Annual Conference, where some of the most caring and determined people from across the nation gather At the Scottish Violence
Reduction Unit, we know that improving the lives of children goes hand in hand with making Scotland the safest place in the world to live
“The world has changed drastically in recent years with the pandemic, the cost of living driving more families into poverty, and with changes in social media, which has impacted on experiences of childhood and the landscape of violence in Scotland
“I’m looking forward to exploring this in my keynote address and advocating for compassion and collaboration at the heart of everything we do ”
Also on day one of the programme, which will be co-chaired by Nicola Killean, Children and Young People's Commissioner Scotland, Children in Scotland’s CEO Dr Judith Turbyne will discuss the challenges and opportunities facing the charity sector, encouraging conversation and debate among the audience A panel discussion that day will also look at Artificial Intelligence (AI) in relation to child rights and safeguarding
Led by Steven Sweeney, Chief Executive of Voluntary Action South Lanarkshire and Children in Scotland board convenor, day two of the programme will open with keynote addresses from Minister for Children, Young People and Keeping the Promise, Natalie Don MSP and campaigner and activist Amal Azzudin. Dr Alexia Barrable, lecturer in Psychology and Education at Queen Margaret University, will discuss the impact of nature on health and wellbeing in the afternoon
On both days, workshops will be held by Scottish SPCA, Multi-Cultural Family Base, Aberlour Children’s Charity, Kibble, and many more organisations and charities across the sector, with topics covering everything from transitions for young people with additional support needs to a day in the life of a young carer
Children and young people’s voices will be central to the conference Children in Scotland’s children and young people’s advisory group, Changing our World, have been involved in the planning of the event and will be present on both days, and students from Edinburgh College of Art have been invited to provide their take on what happens Both days will see young people co-chairing, while many of the workshops will have children and young people’s voices embedded in them.
Alongside powerful keynote speeches, informative panel discussions, and engaging workshops, both days of the Annual Conference will provide opportunities for practitioners to network and engage with colleagues
Simon Massey, Children in Scotland’s Head of Engagement & Learning, said: “This year’s conference promises to be one of our best We have got such a varied programme, with contributions from across the whole sector, everyone will find something of interest But the opportunity to connect with colleagues in person is not to be missed in our world of remote working.
“I’m particularly pleased to see how children and young people’s voices are being embedded throughout the programme –from planning to delivery and, afterwards, evaluating its success
“Thanks to our sponsors and exhibitors, we have been able to keep prices low, so I hope to see as many people there as possible – it really will be worth a day or two away from work ”

Aberdeen Science Centre and Vitenfabrikken will work together to develop a range of STEM activities and educational tools to increase awareness of the global climate crisis within schools and communities in both countries
The ‘Platforms of Tomorrow Challenge’, a competition for school pupils in Aberdeen city and shire, and in Rogoland, Norway, will task select classes of P5-P7 and S1-S3 aged children with inventing methods to reuse decommissioned oil platforms for a new and sustainable purpose They will then present their ideas to a panel of judges using Lego models.
The judges will determine the competition winner, who will receive £1,000 for a green initiative within their school or local area

The competition will launch later this year, but teachers who are interested in having their class take part can register their interest with Aberdeen Science Centre now
Alongside the competition, the project partners will also produce a series of educational videos, the first of which will highlight the similarities between Scotland and Norway’s energy sectors, their shared and individual climate-related challenges, and the plans that each country has in place to meet net zero targets
A second video will showcase the journey of a Christmas tree that has been gifted by Aberdeen’s twin city in Norway, Stavanger, to the city centre’s Castlegate area, as part of a tradition that began in 1970 The video will highlight the vast science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) involvement in the tree’s journey to Scotland.
The two centres will also participate in knowledge and resourcing sharing exercises which will include the sharing of staff members for learning and shadowing programmes in each country
Envisioned as a three-year project, Aberdeen Science Centre and Vitenfabrikken have now begun an initial
pilot year for the collaboration
Bryan Snelling, chief executive officer at Aberdeen Science Centre, said: “We are honoured to have partnered with Norway’s Vitenfabrikken for the North Sea Collaboration Project. Through this partnership, and with the support of Equinor, we want to increase awareness of the global climate emergency and allow an audience in two countries to discover more about how we can all play a part in reaching net zero emissions
“With our ‘Platforms of Tomorrow Challenge’, we plan to engage with more than 500 school pupils across Scotland and Norway, and to facilitate open conversations between young people in both countries about the global nature of the climate crisis, as they will truly be the driving force behind our future decarbonisation efforts.”
Arne Gürtner, senior vice president upstream at Equinor UK, said: “We are proud to work in partnership with the Aberdeen Science Centre to build excitement and new capabilities in STEM –and this recent partnership between the centre and Norway’s Vitenfabrikken is a great example of collaboration in action
“As we continue our journey to net zero, encouraging an early interest in STEM subjects is vital, and exposure to new technology and innovation for young people will be crucial as we work towards a low carbon economy.
“Knowledge and resource-sharing between the UK and Norway is key as we continue to develop solutions to decarbonise The North Sea Collaboration Project is a brilliant new alliance for Aberdeen Science Centre which puts that at its heart.”

ThePromiseinAberdeen: SunrisePartnershipmarks10 yearsofsupportforbereaved childrenandyoungpeople
Established in 2014, Sunrise Partnership is a small, local charity that provides holistic support for children and young people up to the age of 18 who have been bereaved and/or affected by significant loss in Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire.
Sunrise Partnership commits to creating a welcoming, caring, and non-judgmental space for individuals, maintaining confidentiality whilst respecting, valuing, and listening to those affected by bereavement and/or significant loss.
The charity’s vision is for all children and young people to receive the support they need, at the time they need it, for them to achieve their full, true potential as life continues despite suffering loss or bereavement
Michelle Southgate, Support Service Manager, sits down with Gette Cobban, ACVO’S Senior Development Officer (The Promise), to discuss the support that Sunrise Partnership offers to young people experiencing loss, plans for marking the 10th anniversary of the charity, and how the organisation follows The Promise, Scotland’s guarantee of ensuring all children grow up safe, loved, and respected
“Over the past decade, Sunrise Partnership has grown from being established by one woman, Eileen Wheeler, to a dynamic team of 10,” says Michelle Eileen identified that there was a gap in support for bereaved young people and those experiencing significant loss or estrangement of a relationship, particularly for care experienced young people through moving to a kinship arrangement or perhaps by adoption Secondary losses such as moving out of the family home or change of school are also prevalent in these situations
“Our two Area Managers, myself and our group of six sessional support workers come from a variety of professional backgrounds, all with extensive children and young people's experience, and an understanding of bereavement and support,” Michelle explains.
“Some of our workers also have lived experience, allowing for a really strong holistic approach to what we do at Sunrise, and giving us lots of insight from different backgrounds to provide the best support possible ”
24 ACVO News May 2024
Sunrise Partnership’s premise is to reduce barriers to essential support The charity’s services are completely free of charge, and the confidential support lasts for as long as the individual may want, until it comes to a natural ending A member of the Sunrise team travels to meet the young person at a place of their choosing, where they will feel most comfortable.
With 1 in every 29 5-16 year olds suffering bereavement of a parent or sibling, an average of one child in every school class, Michelle says: “It is quite sobering to think of the prevalence of childhood bereavement
“Not every young person will need specialist support, but some will and that is what we are here to help with
“Theyoungperson hastowanttohave thesupportandwant toengage.Wewould neverpushthem;we wouldalwaysmake surethattheyareon boardandwewould takeitattheirpace.”
MichelleSouthgate,SupportServicesManager atSunrisePartnership
“In terms of our referral process, we simply ask anyone in need of support to phone us or send an email and tell us a little bit about their situation.
“We then contact them and have a very sensitive, but much fuller, conversation to build a better picture around what support is needed and to assess if we are the best service for them at that time
“We build a picture of the young person ’ s needs to develop a bespoke support programme around their developmental age and stage We also obtain fully informed consent from the parent or carer ”
In addition to their one-to-one, direct support, Sunrise Partnership offer group support, either as a Family Loss Day or an extended ‘Seasons for Growth’ programme in schools
Detailing Sunrise’s Loss Days, Michelle explains this offer of family support which involves a group of siblings and their parents or carers connecting together as a family unit over the course of one day to discuss their feelings and to openly speak about their grief and loss
“Families find our Loss Days really helpful and supportive,” says Michelle
ACVO News 25 May 2024
Brodie Smart was a nominee in the Young Supporter of the Year category at the Celebrate Aberdeen Awards 2023 for promoting Sunrise Partnership after receiving support from the charity
Some of the Sunrise Partnership team at the Aberdeen Kiltwalk 2023
“It is an intensive approach, where we have lunch together, do lots of fun things such as crafts and activities, and just give them as a family a chance to talk together
“They share their experiences about how they are feeling, what their perception is of the situation, and what supports that they need moving forward ”
Michelle shares one parent’s explanation of the positive impact a Loss Day had for her three children: “We are all doing really well and all feel our day with you was extremely helpful and valuable I really can't thank you both enough I feel the children have all really turned a corner in terms of the losses Things have really turned around ”
“Since coming on board in October 2020, I also developed peer support groups, ” Michelle continues
“This is an additional offer of support which complements our one to one support, working in partnership with Urban Uprising and Transition Extreme
“Itissoimportantfor ustoletyoung peoplehavetheir voiceandtobe heard, andto recognisethattheir griefisimportant.”
“This involves our indoor climbing groups, with our third group having started just recently This is a really lovely group of six boys from across the city and Shire, aged eight to 12, all with a common experience of bereavement or significant loss
“The young people for our peer support groups are handpicked so that we get the dynamic right Everybody then gets the best out of the group and the activity, so meeting their individual needs as well.
“We find that this support complements the work that we do by developing resilience, good decision-making, reduces isolation, builds self-esteem and self-confidence with the children ”
One foundation of The Promise details the importance of voice: children must be listened to It is evident that through their support services this is one of Sunrise Partnership’s top priorities
“It is absolutely vital for us at Sunrise that the young person is at the centre,” says Michelle
“The young person has to want to have the support and want to engage We would never push them; we would always make sure that they are on board and we would take it at their pace ”
Michelle continues: “We offer a neutral, safe space, which is all about the young person, where they are at the centre of everything
“It is so important for us to let young people have their voice and to be heard, and to recognise that their grief is important ”
As a whole, Sunrise Partnership uses The Promise as a framework for their support services, something to look at and inspect It gives the charity targets and a guide to work towards, ensuring they are getting things right for the children and young people
In addition to their support for children, Michelle further details family support: “Listening to parents and hearing their story can be really supportive and helpful for the child too

Sunrise Partnership’s peer support indoor climbing group for young people develops their resilience and builds their confidence
“The family know that they are all in safe hands and that we are going to be with them every step of the way through the process ”
“We also offer quite a lot of scaffolding,” says Michelle, another crucial foundation of The Promise
“We give them the space, the permission and the tools to be able to talk about feelings and to not feel embarrassed, scared, or ashamed

The Sunrise Partnership team will be taking part again in this years ’ Kiltwalk in June to celebrate their 10th anniversary
“WithThePromiseinmind,andasa framework,Sunrisewillcontinueto ensurethatthefocusisonthechild, ontheirneeds,andtheirjourneyas theygrowbiggeraroundtheirgrief.”
Michelle Southgate, Support Services Manager at Sunrise Partnership
Michelle feels strongly about matching the young person with their original support worker in these instances to continue the therapeutic relationship and avoid having to re-tell their story
Sunrise Partnership has found that 90% of young people feel supported, respected and valued when they undertake their support work with a sessional worker This gives unconditional regard and increases the young person ’ s selfesteem which in turn impacts positively on family relationships
Michelle explains: “Parents often comment on the difference in their children's behaviour, their countenance and communication at home Their overall outlook on life becomes more positive, they begin to look forward again and engage with the things that they enjoy
“We receive positive feedback from the referrers and the schools, saying that the individual is much more settled Negative impacts of childhood bereavement can show as poor school attendance and poor attainment, both of which are being prevented through our support at Sunrise ”
After a decade of offering support to bereaved children and young people, the team at Sunrise Partnership is gearing up for big plans to mark their special milestone It is certainly an exciting time for the charity, as Michelle eagerly says: “There’s lots of ideas, enthusiasm, and buzz around Sunrise at the moment as we begin to celebrate our 10th birthday.
“We will be doing some exciting events this year to mark the occasion, including the Aberdeen Kiltwalk in June, and a sunrise hike up Bennachie on the summer solstice with the whole Sunrise team
“We also have plans for some fundraising events, as well as a ‘10 for Sunrise’ challenge for people to take part in This will get folks to think creatively, fundraise for us and create a real buzz for our anniversary
Michelle adds that this is a fantastic opportunity to promote the quality and consistency of Sunrise’s services: “We will be
celebrating where we have come from, where we are going, and how we want to develop things as we look ahead.
“At Sunrise, we will continue to commit to our vision of offering a safe space for individuals, to allow the young person to receive the support they need as they suffer bereavement or a significant loss
“With The Promise in mind, and as a framework, Sunrise will continue to ensure that the focus is on the child, on their needs, and their journey as they grow bigger around their grief
“There is a difference between listening to young people and hearing young people We are listening to understand, not to respond We really pride ourselves in allowing the child to open up about their experience with grief, when they are ready to do so, and supporting their next steps in their journey
“Being a little link in the chain in their life story at a really difficult time is such a privilege, and I look forward to see where Sunrise goes in the future as we continue to support more children, young people and families in their bereavement ”

Jackie Weir, the Development Worker at St. Machar Credit Union, has been a driving force behind the organisation's success for many years.
Her dedication and passion for serving the community have been instrumental in shaping the credit union's journey Reflecting on the challenges and triumphs, Jackie recalls the early days of the credit union and its evolution over the years
"When we started out, there was a lot of scepticism from some quarters about whether a credit union could thrive in our community," says Jackie "But we proved them wrong We showed that when people come together with a common purpose, amazing things can happen."
Jackie highlights the importance of community ownership and engagement in the success of St Machar Credit Union. "We're not just a financial institution; we're a community-led organisation," she explains "Our members have a say in how we operate, and their input shapes our decisions That's what sets us apart from traditional banks."
Over the years, St Machar Credit Union has expanded its reach, serving a wide area encompassing neighbourhoods such as Seaton, Woodside, Tillydrone, and beyond. Its inclusive membership policy welcomes anyone who lives or works in the area, ensuring that no one is left behind
"We're proud to be a local institution, deeply rooted in the fabric of our community," says Jackie "We're here for everyone, from cradle to grave, offering support and guidance every step of the way."

Jodie Sim, an admin staff member at St. Machar Credit Union, shares her journey of personal and professional growth within the organisation.
"I joined St Machar Credit Union 10 years ago after undertaking the shmu employability programme When I first started I had no idea what a credit union was but thanks to the training and support I received here, I've grown into my role and gained valuable skills that have shaped my career "
“As well as working here I use the services of the credit union so from personal experience I can see the benefits it brings For example, for me, using the services here paid for my first ever holiday, my car when I passed my test ”
“My father had an account here and unfortunately, he passed away If it wasn't for the free life assurance available with our accounts - because he had COPD and cancer, so not a lot of places would have taken him on - then we would have had no way to pay the £7000 funeral bill.
“It was a terrifying time for my mum who's got vascular dementia She's got an account here so she's also covered under the life assurance It gives us a little bit of peace of mind, because you don't know when things are going to happen. With the Credit Union, I always say if you take care of it in life, it will treat your family well when you pass ”
For Jodie, working at St Machar Credit Union is more than just a job; it's a source of pride and fulfilment. "I feel like I'm making a difference in people's lives every day," she explains. "I see it first hand, the difference it makes I know that I'm contributing to something meaningful "
Jodie emphasises the importance of face-to-face interaction in fostering strong relationships with members "In an increasingly digital world, there's something special about meeting people in person and building trust," she says

Michelle, an admin staff member at St. Machar Credit Union, reflects on the profound impact the credit union has had on her life and the lives of others
"As well as working here more recently, I've been a member of St. Machar Credit Union for over 30 years, and it's been a lifeline for me," says Michelle "From saving for holidays to helping out my grandchildren, the credit union has been there every step of the way."
Michelle highlights the role of the credit union in promoting financial resilience and security among its members "For many people, especially those on low incomes, the credit union is something that gives them hope," she explains. "It offers them a safe and affordable alternative to high-interest lenders, giving them the tools they need to manage their finances effectively."
“People are always surprised when they see how much they have managed to save up They always thank us but I make a point of saying that it’s them that has put all the work in, their saving success is all down to themselves. It’s important to emphasise that because I think it’s empowering to remind people they are responsible for managing to save for a family holiday or for their kids’ Christmas.”
Looking to the future, Michelle remains optimistic about the credit union's continued success and impact "As long as there are people in need of support, St. Machar Credit Union will be here to lend a helping hand," she says.
Empowering the local community
Nicola, a loyal customer of St. Machar Credit Union, shares her reasons for choosing the credit union over traditional banks "I use this place because it's better for paying back loans," says Nicola "You can walk in any morning, and there's no anxiety or intimidation. It's like visiting family."
For Nicola, St Machar Credit Union represents more than just a financial institution; it's a place of trust and reliability. "I feel comfortable here, knowing that I'll be treated with respect and understanding," she explains
In times when financial insecurity is all too common, St. Machar Credit Union facilitates empowerment for the North Aberdeen community Through its commitment to serving the needs of its members and fostering a sense of belonging, the credit union has transformed countless lives and empowered individuals to take control of their financial futures
From its humble beginnings to its current status as a pillar of the community, St. Machar Credit Union remains dedicated to its mission of promoting financial inclusion and stability With passionate staff members like Jackie, Jodie, Michelle, and regular customers like Nicola, the credit union continues to make a positive impact on the lives of those it serves
St Machar Credit Union is one of the many organisations in the city which benefits from support from the Fairer Aberdeen Fund Jackie, emphasised the importance of the Fund in sustaining the institution's operations, explaining that it plays a crucial role in covering part of the staff wages, ensuring the continued functioning of essential services provided by the credit union
Acknowledging the ongoing challenges, Jackie mentioned the uncertainty surrounding the Fund's availability each year adds to the apprehension among staff members about the security of their jobs. Despite these concerns, she remains committed to navigating the financial landscape, adjusting operations as needed to maintain stability and uphold the credit union's mission of serving the community.
However, as we look to the future, one thing is certainSt Machar Credit Union will continue to be a source of support, guidance, and hope for generations to come.
Where all to often, financial institutions prioritise profits over people, St Machar Credit Union stands out as a shining example of what can be achieved when communities come together for the greater good

Preserving Heritage, Building Community: The Woodside Gateway Feature
The Woodside Fountain has been re-instated to its original location as part of the new Woodside Gateway Feature, which was officially opened on April 19th by Aberdeen’s Lord Provost in a ceremony attended by local residents and others who played an integral role in the project.
ACVO News 34 May 2024
The Gateway is a mini-park that prioritises walking, cycling, and wheeling, and serves to welcome people to the Woodside neighbourhood with landscaping features reflecting a sea-to-shore theme with native planting, and the old site of the fountain at the heart of the scheme
The creation of the new gateway feature is part of the Tilly-Wood Street Design Project and was led by The Street Design Steering Group, Sustrans and Aberdeen City Council Community Planning along with several local community groups via a series of engagement events
Hamish Cattanach, Community Development Officer at Aberdeen City Council, played a pivotal role in the inception and execution of the project.
With the grant from Sustrans, Community Planning Aberdeen were able to engage with the local community to create a space that not only enhances safety but also celebrates the area's heritage.
"The Woodside Gateway Feature you see here is one element of a bigger community engagement project which started a few years ago and saw us engage with around 3000 local residents through 38 different events and activities At its core, the Woodside Gateway Feature is an aesthetically designed mini-park connecting the Woodside community with Tillydrone. It's also a community engagement exercise; we've built an object that's got a local identity at its heart.
“One of the primary motivations behind installing the feature is to remind drivers that they are entering a residential area, so it has that community safety element. Another part of the work was aimed towards contributing towards an increase in walking, cycling and wheeling in the area, but there’s also a lot more to it in terms of celebrating the local area and it’s heritage ”
Expressing gratitude for the collaborative effort, Hamish concludes, "I just wanted to say a huge thank you to everyone that contributed to this project, I've been absolutely thrilled to see it take shape from an initial idea. Research demonstrates that aesthetic improvements in local communities can be good for people's impression of an area, as well as their general wellbeing and safety We hope that local residents will embrace the project and it helps to foster a sense of ownership for the area ”

Hamish Bigg, of Bigg Design, lent his artistic vision and coordination to the Woodside Gateway Feature. His involvement since late 2018 has focused on integrating art, heritage, and community narratives into the project.
Reflecting on the historical significance of the fountain, he remarks, "During the process, we found out that the Woodside Fountain here used to be very much the focal point of the community so we thought it was important to acknowledge and reinstate it as a significant area for Woodside
HamishBigg,ofBiggDesign,leadengagementartistfortheproject
“There is a great benefit in humanising our streets. We’ve managed to create a sense of colour on arrival to Woodside and have hopefully made this area a bit more inspiring and uplifting to be in”
“We held a series of workshops with schools, the general public and with local organisations such as the Fersands Art Group We looked at the heritage of the area and these amazing stories emerged of the history of Woodside with the mills, cotton works, printing and of course the world famous Crombie Cloth, which clothed First World War Heroes, The Royal Family and the Beatles There’s also the history of the railways and canals in the area, this would have been a bustling place of industry so it was important to remind people of that and embrace the past.
“We also wanted to bring some of the amazing natural surroundings of the countryside into the urban environment At the art group, we settled on themes of representing the salmon and the otter from the River Don; the beehives and the red squirrels from the woodlands We have been trying to bring a sense of nature into this quite harsh urban environment on the main road.”
Hamish underscores the collaborative nature of the project, stating, “I think community art projects are really important because there is a great benefit in humanising our streets We’ve managed to create a sense of colour on arrival to Woodside and have hopefully made this area a bit more inspiring and uplifting to be in.”

Charlene Kilpatrick, Chair of Woodside Community Council, sheds light on the importance of community projects like the Woodside Gateway Feature in fostering resilience and engagement within the community.
"I think this project has reignited interest in the local area, Woodside sometimes is seen as a place with a bit of a negative reputation but I think projects like this help bring people together celebrate what’s good in the community”
Highlighting the historical significance of Woodside, she explains, "Woodside is built on The Freedom Lands which were gifted to the people of Aberdeen from Robert the Bruce – people sometimes forget how important this area of the city is and it was fantastic that with this project we could help showcase to everyone, both locally and city wide, the rich history of the area ”
Charlene reflects on the community's response to the project, noting, "The children seeing it for the first time was absolutely brilliant, their faces when seeing all the colours, it lit them up It brings a real vibrance to the community "
Aberdeen Lord Provost, Dr David Cameron who opened the Woodside Gateway Feature said “Returning the historic Woodside Fountain to its original location is great to see as it’s an important and prominent part of Woodside’s heritage and history I’m delighted to see it returning to the heart of the community area.”
A time capsule was also buried in the mini park area by the Lord Provost and community representatives The capsule was organised by Woodside Community Council and contains a variety of items including photographs, artworks and community information
The success of the Woodside Gateway Feature demonstrates what can be done when a community led project facilitates engagement and interest within an area Through collaboration, creativity, and a shared commitment to positive change, the story of a community can be celebrated while making positive steps towards meeting improvement aims

Thanks to a £7,500 donation from Aberdeenbased Infinity, the Lads Club has laid artificial
grass throughout its pre-school nursery outdoor space, enabling its youngsters to play, run and explore, safely.
Infinity made the donation to coincide with a major renovation project which saw the Lads Club’s Tillydrone facility undergo significant modernisation.
Aberdeen Lads Club manager, Angie Johnston said: “Outdoor play is so important for children, as it not only helps with their overall physical
development and wellbeing, but also lets them build essential life skills, such as problem-solving, teamwork and risk management.
“It also means that they get plenty of natural light and fresh air, which as we all know helps them sleep better at night and in turn can improve their concentration levels
“Plus playing outside is great fun and gives the youngsters the opportunity to explore and learn in a way that’s different to their indoor environment ”
Infinity Partnership managing director, Simon Cowie said: “Aberdeen Lads Club is such a fantastic organisation,
providing vital services for families in Tillydrone and beyond
“We were aware that the charity’s Dill Road building had recently benefited from a significant upgrade, and so wanted to do something for the children that would enhance their nursery experience
“The weather in the North-east of Scotland isn’t always the kindest and we know how quickly real grass can turn into a bit of a muddy mess We therefore wanted to provide funds for the artificial grass so that the nursery kids can play outside throughout the year.
“We also wanted to provide the Lads Club team with something that required much less maintenance, making life so much easier.”
As well as its pre-school nursery, Aberdeen Lads Club runs an afterschool club, junior and senior youth clubs, and a number of holiday clubs. It also offers a range of family support initiatives.
Infinity is recognised for its accountancy, research and development tax relief, mergers and acquisitions and corporate finance expertise As a practice, Infinity is a five-time winner at the British Accountancy Awards Its offices are based at Carden Place in the West End of the city

Asylum and Refugee Care (AARC) was founded in October 2022 and formally registered as a SCIO – Scottish Charity in April 2023. AARC predominantly supports people seeking asylum who are living in the North-East who have No Recourse to Public Funds. We ensure that for this group basic needs are met when people first arrive; this includes clothing, digital needs and welcome packs which give individuals some basic essentials to help with their integration
AARC also promotes volunteering opportunities, as this helps individuals to integrate into their new communities, while developing their knowledge of the English language. We continue to support individuals as they receive a decision on their asylum claim and provide any ongoing support as required
AARC is a small charity, run by one of its founders and a small number of volunteers This is an exciting opportunity to join the Board of Trustees of this relatively new charity. Trustee meetings take place approximately every 2-3 months, as well as the AGM At trustee meetings, you will be updated on the activities of the charity including its challenges and contribute to the direction of the charity Training will be provided, giving an overview of what the trustee role involves
We would love Trustees from a diverse range of backgrounds who can use their experiences to contribute to decisions. Please do not hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions.
