ETZ Ltd has established a community fund that will support local community projects.
An initial £100,000 will be made available to local community projects in the pilot year with commitment to further funding in future. This is a first of many steps in taking forward ETZ Ltd’s Community & Coast programme; a significant investment programme to improve local green spaces and deliver a comprehensive community benefit. The community fund will be delivered independently by ACVO, who have over 20 years’ experience working in the city as the central hub of knowledge relating to the local third sector and has a strong reputation in fund management and delivery to the third sector The fund will take applications for projects from community groups in Torry and Cove that align with the Community & Coast six pillars
Carole Monnier, ETZ Ltd Community Lead, said, “We recognise that working closely with the community to identify, shape and deliver impactful projects will be the key to delivering a successful pilot year and beyond That’s why we are delighted to be partnering with ACVO who has a proven track record of delivering positive impact for communities
Informational sessions will be held by ACVO leading up to opening for submissions in late September 2024 ACVO will be making more information available on their website as dates draw nearer The recipients of the fund will be decided by a process called Participatory Budgeting (PB). Residents of Torry and Cove will decide which projects will be successful through an online voting process.
Maggie Hepburn, CEO of ACVO said, “Finding funding is very challenging and ACVO are looking forward to being part of delivering this locally focused fund with the ability to develop some exciting projects.”
More information is available directly on the ACVO website.
You are invited to register your interest directly with ACVO, or by emailing community@etzltd.com to receive news about the fund as it becomes available

Colleagues at Disclosure
Scotland are currently considering submissions to its recent consultation on a
proposal to introduce fees for volunteers joining the PVG scheme.
ACVO held an online briefing on the topic with our colleagues in Aberdeenshire to gather the views of our members and the wider third sector, and submitted our thoughts to the Scottish Government body.
Communities in Aberdeen are currently benefitting from an incredible 6 4 million hours of help, positively impacting every aspect of life in the city The overall
Social Return On Investment for volunteering in Aberdeen is substantial. For every £1 invested there is a £14.12 cumulative economic, societal and public health return.
Many community organisations simply don't have the funds to cover these proposed costs The majority of registered charities in Aberdeen City are small organisations with an income below £25,000 and little leeway to raise or spend more. The impact of these costs would be substantial. Our members have made it clear that any additional costs will force them to cut back on their volunteer programmes, which are essential for delivering their services to vulnerable people
What is being proposed is the introduction of substantial recurring costs to communities. The current funding landscape in the sector means that many grant schemes are project based and do not cover core operating costs In addition, funders are under pressure with the need for financial assistance greater than ever There is not enough money in the system, and the thought of additional recurring costs is extremely worrying for our members
Organisations will be unable to pass on the costs to volunteers themselves This would be guaranteed to deter people from volunteering at a time when charities are already struggling to recruit Changing volunteers would lead to an even greater shortage of people, putting vulnerable people at risk The burden for support would then fall on the public sector, which is already facing its own financial pressures. Charging volunteers to give their time goes against the principles of the Volunteer Charter and
the Volunteering Action Plan, which are clear that volunteering should be accessible to everyone regardless of income.
The more complicated and costly the system is made, the more likely is that people fall through cracks and expose people to risk We are extremely concerned that introducing costs could increase non-compliance with the scheme therefore criminalising wellintentioned volunteers unable to afford the fees.
This proposal is nothing short of a tax on volunteering It will undoubtedly reduce the number of volunteers able to give their time, resulting in vulnerable people being put at risk through lack of support Instead of spending time concentrating on delivering services, we and our members are having to dedicate scarce resources to respond to this very unwelcome proposal
Bringing this Tax on Volunteering forward at a time when many third sector organisations are struggling with increased costs is a kick in the teeth to communities and an insult to all those who give their time and talents freely for the benefit of others The warm words from the Scottish Government about their commitment to the third sector and to volunteers must be backed up by concrete actions to support communities Charging volunteers to help vulnerable people will never be acceptable to us or our members. The Scottish Government must fund Disclosure Scotland to an appropriate level, reject this proposal outright, and confirm that it will not be brought forward again

Children’sHearing Systemreform updates
When reflecting on the expected changes effected by the Care and Justice Bill reminds us that it’s a year since The Promise launched its report calling for changes to the Children’s Hearing System.
Quite radical reform was asked for. As we know change can take time and we don’t always get what we ask for straight away...
If you’d like to catch up on the current progress there is an interesting article written by Sherriff David Mackie, a long standing advocate for change in our youth justice system. Finally, just a reminder that we are waiting for the launch on 20th June of the new 24-30 Plan.
I believe this will continue to build on the five foundations of voice, family, care, people and scaffolding
Continuing to work towards improving outcomes for our children, young people and their families.
Siblings Reunited
Many of you may be aware that I shared information recently about the “Community of Practice for Siblings”. There is a very short video available to watch above.
Karen Morrison, founder and CEO of Siblings Reunited talks about the group itself and within the Promise website highlights the role of this group and how anyone can get involved. Meetings are held online and in-person so distance is no barrier.
Have a read of the blog at Siblings Day Blog: Community of Practice for Siblings.
HowtheChildren(Careand Justice)(Scotland)Billwillhelp Scotlandto#KeepThePromise
There is strong feelings about how this links with the aims of The Promise, in particular ending the placements of 16-17 year olds in young offenders institutions and prisons. The belief that a rights based, psychological and trauma-informed response will effect a much stronger opportunity for real change and impact. The bill also recognises the importance of ensuring any placement is age appropriate for best chance of change.
This impact on the children’s hearing system too with the following expected changes: proposing to change the age of referral to a children’s hearing from 16 years old to 18 years old and, removing statutory barriers to 16- and 17-year-olds being referred to the Principal Reporter This change will extend to all under 18s both those on welfare and criminal grounds

Autism&NeurodiversityNorthScotland(A-ND)welcomed backitsannualdinnerforasecondyearonThursday23rd May,announcingafundraisingtotalof£80,000.
The Aberdeen-based support charity welcomed guests to Aberdeen’s Union Kirk
for the sold-out Think Different Dinner, organised and managed by A-ND's event and PR partners ThinkPR Scotland, with all money raised contributing towards the expansion of A-ND's services in the north of Scotland including aims for growth within key locations into the highlands.
A-ND currently provides ongoing ‘life-changing’ care and support services to over 230 individuals and their families throughout Aberdeen,
Aberdeenshire, Moray, and the Highlands, and with continued funding, A-ND has its sights set on increasing this number to more than 500 by 2027. Plans for strategic growth in North Scotland will be strengthened by the opening of a brand-new 200+ sq. ft. Highland Playscheme facility in Dingwall later this year – mirroring A-ND's established Aberdeen Playscheme
The new Highland facility has been made possible by corporate supporter, Envoy Group, who donated to the charity it’s largest corporate investment to date Also standing as a Platinum Sponsor
at the dinner, Envoy Group was joined by ongoing supporters and fellow Platinum Sponsor, Global E&C; Gold Sponsor, Stork; and Silver Sponsor, Serica Energy.
As an added surprise, attendees were joined by special guests, Luke and Tom Stoltman – the ‘World’s Strongest Brothers’ and Highland natives themselves. Diagnosed as autistic at the age of five, 3x World’s Strongest Man winner Tom Stoltman has since become an ambassador for autism and neurodiversity, educating and empowering others like himself on what he describes as his superpower

The annual dinner is the charity’s largest fundraising event, providing the platform to generate support and is crucial in increasing awareness of A-ND's services Since last year’s dinner, A-ND has increased the number of people it supports from 150 to 236 whilst launching its innovative Binky the Sensory Bus initiative: a double-decker bus offering a unique and specialised mobile sensory environment.
Reflecting on what these funds mean for the charity, A-ND CEO Billy Alexander commented: "This is truly a new high for us here at A-ND. The outstanding success of the Think Different Dinner 2024 is a testament to the power of collaboration between the private and third sectors When we work together, the difference we can make in our community is, quite literally, life-
changing - we saw it last year after the success of the inaugural dinner, and we'll see it again now
“Progress is critical for A-ND, with more than 22,000 estimated neurodiverse individuals in Aberdeen City alone and we have seen several major milestones over the last two years This year's event was a fantastic night to reflect on how far we've come and celebrate the beautiful individuals and families we support and our team who make magic every day but also provide us with a platform to set our sights on the future of A-ND. With the network of support that has shown belief in our mission, I know we are in a strong position to keep creating changes throughout Scotland "

TheAberdeenStudentShowhasannouncedtherecordbreakingtotalfromthe2024charitiescampaign ‘MounthoolinRouge’.
The fundraising show which took to the stage of His Majesty’s Theatre in April raised a staggering
£156,323 96 for sixty six local charities
Taking to the stage of the city's His Majesty’s Theatre from the 24th - 27th April 2024, the 2024 Aberdeen Student Show has smashed the 103 year old societies fundraising record, set in 2023 with the production of ‘Ayetanic’ by over £31,000.
With support from local businesses, this year’s sell-out production has raised money for sixty six charities based in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire including Save The Belmont Cinema, Camphill School, Rape Crisis Grampian, UCANUrilogical Cancer Support and Bridge of Don Men’s Shed
The Doric parody based on the film and musical Moulin Rouge, followed the
lovable Gregor McEwan and his pals as they tried to save the Mounthoolin Rouge! A brand new club on the Mounthooly Roundabout
The student-led society’s Administrator Meg Stanger is thrilled to have led this record-breaking total, “I am so grateful for the hard work of everyone who was involved in the show and also the support of the community this past year The sponsorship money we received and our fundraising events prior to the show meant that we could cover 100% of the production costs this year This meant that every penny from our ticket sales has gone straight to charity and led to Aberdeen Student Show raising yet another incredible amount of money for local charities.”
This record-breaking amount has contributed to over a hundred years of Aberdeen Student Show’s fundraising
efforts. In the last ten years of productions, the society has raised over one million pounds, all being donated to local charities
The society’s Charities Coordinator, Kat Officer added, “I am absolutely over the moon with the total that we’ve managed to raise this year From fundraising to donations to sponsors and businesses, Aberdeen has been incredibly generous! I want to say a massive thank you to everyone across the North-East who bought a ticket to come and see the show Now more than ever, charities across the North-East need our support, and this money will go a really long way for each and every one of them!”
Aberdeen Student Show will return from the 23rd - 26th April 2025 at His Majesty’s Theatre with another of their distinctly doric productions

In partnership with the NHS Cystic Fibrosis teams at ARI and RACH, The Leanne Fund have been providing specialist support to children and adults
affected by CF across the region since 2016
Founded in 2010, The Leanne Fund is now recognised as the foremost Cystic Fibrosis support organisation in Scotland - bringing hope to those affected by the illness, sharing the burdens that CF brings, and significantly changing the lives of sufferers and their families through a range of social, practical, emotional, and financial support services.
Living with Cystic Fibrosis impacts daily on the lives of sufferers and their families Through a range of support services, The Leanne Fund help those affected by CF to lead a fuller life and their families to cope better as carers.
From their remote office base on the Isle of Lewis, The Leanne Fund has grown and evolved to develop a range of support services which are centred around the needs of the CF Community in Scotland
Through their unique services they are providing support to the family of the newly diagnosed baby, support for frequent emergency hospital admissions, support with fitness equipment and sports club memberships to improve wellbeing, counselling and mindfulness to support mental wellbeing, support with heating and electricity charges, supermarket vouchers to alleviate food shortages, support to provide
the family Christmas meal - they are coming alongside families where the challenge of poverty is an ever present aspect of lifefamilies who simply can't make ends meet as their income or benefits just don't go far enough
The many complex needs resulting from the condition which prove costly for individuals and families are not met by the NHS but supported through their services
The Leanne Fund are putting children's and family’s needs first, ensuring they have access to life's essentials by providing real, tangible support exactly when it is needed
Recent feedback from a CF Nurse Specialist in NHS Grampian indicates the high regard in which The Leanne Fund is held
'I’ve been a nurse for 25 years and in that time had an awareness of the work that charities did and how they supported patients, but I haven’t had the pleasure of working so closely with a charity that does such tangible work, until I started working with the Leanne Fund
The Leanne fund is our go to for practical and emotional support for patients. We think of the Leanne Fund as the charity to call when help is needed, and it makes such a huge difference to patients living with CF in Grampian '
A Leanne Fund ambassador and service user, Eden shares her experience.
‘The Leanne Fund is a brilliant charity that really helps people with cystic fibrosis and their families There are other, bigger charities
that help with research and treatments but the Leanne Fund team are so friendly and helpful they almost feel like family and help with day to day practicalities
When I was in hospital for IV treatment I got a lovely hamper with tasty snacks, toiletries and fun things to do I love that the whole team understand CF and really make a difference every day.
My family and I try to support the Leanne Fund with some kind of fundraising every year. We are very grateful to everyone who supports us to do this and help the Leanne Fund support anyone affected by CF ’

-BettyBates,volunteeratChildline
Staff and volunteers marked the occasion with a celebration at the Childline office in Meridian on Union Row, sharing stories of their
time at the NSPCC-run service
Childline Aberdeen has had three bases in the city since 2004 – the first on Poynernook Road before moving to Ruby House in autumn 2008, where counsellors were based for over a decade
The service then moved to its current home last year. The opening of the new office was marked with a visit by Lord Provost David Cameron
Betty Bates, 77, from the Bridge of Don area of the city has been a volunteer at Aberdeen Childline since it opened
Betty, who was a support member of staff at Grampian Police for 30 years, said: “It is satisfying to think that you’re helping someone else and could be preventing a child from being harmed Especially now with
children being online so much – it is hard to get away from online bullying.
“Childline is always there for children and will listen no matter what their worry is It is better to share your concerns with someone, and Childline counsellors will listen without judgement ”
George Brestan has also been volunteering at Aberdeen Childline since it opened. He was taking early retirement when he heard about Childline setting up in the city
He said: “I thought my background as a youth worker might be useful I firmly believe that Childline plays an important part in children and young people’s wellbeing and I’m pleased I have been able to contribute to this vital work.
“The biggest change over the years has been the move from voice-only calls to web-based contacts and the introduction of computers at every desk The availability of the internet has made an enormous change to all of our lives.
“The downside of the web is the way people of all ages use it to vent their own negativity Young people are not immune to this, and it can cause much hurt and mental distress ”
During his 20 years as a volunteer counsellor, one of his highlights has been Childline founder Dame Esther Rantzen’s visits to the base, who brought “abundant enthusiasm” for the service
George added: “I’ve also had the privilege of representing the Aberdeen base at a reception hosted by the then Countess of Wessex (now Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh) at Buckingham Palace.”
The main concerns of young people that Childline counsellors in Aberdeen have been dealing with has changed over the decades For the first five years after the 2004 opening, bullying was the main topic raised by young people.
This then shifted to ‘family relationships’ from 2009/10 until 2014/15 But since 2015/16, low self-esteem and mental health concerns have been the most common issues that young people have contacted the service about
Technology has improved significantly since 2004, when telephone calls were the only way for young people to contact Childline
But the online 1-2-1 chat function is now the most popular method for young people to reach out, with 59% of counselling sessions being carried out in this way from Aberdeen Childline in 2023/24. Children can also email a counsellor through the Childline website

Childline founder Dame Esther Rantzen, was played to volunteers at the celebration In it, she said: “We massively appreciate all the work all the volunteers and staff put into this brilliant charity, which is unfortunately needed now more than ever But what fantastic work. What a fantastic 20 years and here’s to 20 more.”
Rebecca also shared a message on behalf of her mum, which said: “Aberdeen Childline has wonderful volunteers, superb staff and outstanding cake baking A very, very happy birthday to all of you at the Aberdeen base You have helped thousands and thousands of children who had nowhere else to turn to On their behalf, happiest birthday ”
Paul Johnson, Aberdeen Childline Manager, said: “It was great to celebrate such a huge milestone for Childline in Aberdeen Our staff and volunteers have helped hundreds of thousands of young people in our 20 years in the city – knowing that, makes all the hard work worthwhile
“It was a great day having the team get together in our Aberdeen base to mark the occasion and share stories from our time at Childline.
“There has been a lot of change in the two decades we’ve been operating in Aberdeen Technology has moved on, and we are not just a phone service, with children now also able to contact us via 1-2-1 online chat and email and they can also use our message boards and resources on the Childline website It’s important that we remain accessible wherever young people are Our online chat function demonstrates this and is an increasingly common method of contact ”
Children and young people can contact Childline about any worries by calling 0800 1111 or visiting the website Adults concerned about a child can contact the NSPCC Helpline on 0808 800 5000 or via help@nspcc org uk

Kicking Off a New Era: Kicking Off a New Era: CruyffCourtWillieMillerinTillydrone CruyffCourtWillieMillerinTillydrone 20 ACVO News June 2024
In May 2024, Tillydrone celebrated a significant milestone with the opening of the city’s third Cruyff Court. The facility, named in honour of Dons legend, Willie Miller, saw it’s namesake, as well as two other Gothenburg Greats – Doug Rougvie and Neil Simpson – attend the opening event of this community driven initiative. The court not only offers a safe space for young people to play but also symbolises the power of partnership working and what can be achieved when residents, decision makers and third sector organisations come together for the betterment of a community.
Hamish Cattanach, Community Development Officer for Aberdeen City Council, recalls the project’s beginnings. "There was formally football pitch within Tillydrone but it was taken away with the new Hillcrest Housing development around 2017-2018. At the time Hillcrest committed to working with the community to implement a replacement and things progressed from there
“We explored several options - a five-a-side pitch, a regular football pitch, or a Cruyff Court The community chose the Cruyff Court which, given the support, funding and buy in from other organisations has proved overwhelmingly that this was the correct choice ”
The journey from idea to reality wasn't straightforward. Initial community consultations identified five potential locations within Tillydrone, and after much deliberation, the current site was chosen. However, just as construction began, the COVID-19 pandemic hit, delaying progress for two years Now, as the Cruyff Court opens for local residents to use, the positive impact it is making can be seen already
"It’s great news for children and young people," Hamish continues "They’ve been using the court regularly since it opened. It’s all about community engagement coming together to find innovative local solutions to issues like youth disturbance and providing opportunities for adults as well."

It's for the community and the kids growing up here in Tillydrone. They needed something like this for a long time. We’re delighted it’s finally here. Especially now, with the cost of living so high, many people can’t afford other activities.
A Hub of Activity
Since its opening, the Cruyff Court has become a bustling hub of activity. Charley, a local youth, shares his excitement: "I think the Cruyff Court is really good. Sometimes I go to my grandma's, and no matter what time I come around, there are always people playing, even at 10 o'clock at night It’s never locked, and every Thursday, they have sessions that are always jam-packed It’s a really nice place to play football "
Charley’s Grandmother, Lorraine, echoes this sentiment "It's for the community and the kids growing up here in Tillydrone. They needed something like this for a long time. We’re delighted it’s finally here. Especially now, with the cost of living so high, many people can’t afford other activities. But we can come here whenever we want without restriction It's amazing "
Building a Better Future
Mark Williams, Chief Operating Officer for the Denis Law Legacy Trust, highlights the project's broader impact "Cruyff Court Willie Miller has been a long project, and we are proud to be associated with it This is the third one we’ve built in conjunction with Aberdeen City Council and the Cruyff Foundation. It's important for Tillydrone because it provides a permanent, safe space for young people to enjoy with their friends."
Mark elaborates on the objectives of Cruyff Courts: "Shortterm, it offers instant opportunities to improve mental and physical wellbeing and friendships Medium-term, it leads to fewer calls to police and fire services We’ve already seen a 50% drop in such calls at the Cruyff Court Neale Cooper in Torry Long-term, we hope these positive opportunities will steer young people away from negative influences like drugs and alcohol "
22 ACVO News June 2024
Partnerships have been key to the project's success. "Everyone brings something different to the table," Mark explains. "We couldn’t do this alone. The City Council’s backing, the Cruyff Foundation’s support, and our commitment to 10 years of provision for the court mean we’re here for the long haul We love making a difference in young people’s lives, and days like this make it all worthwhile "
A Community United
The new Cruyff Court is more than just a sports facility; it's a symbol of what can be achieved through unity and perseverance. Shauny, a local volunteer, reflects on the community's efforts. "There was very little for the kids to do in this area. Tillydrone is often seen as a deprived community, and many youth clubs have closed down. This court gets kids off the streets and gives them something enjoyable to do "
Shauny continues, "We fought tooth and nail for this, and I’m glad it’s finally open The new Cruyff Court is advancing the community I’ve been involved in working with kids and their school football team voluntarily, and I’m sure they’ll appreciate the pitch and look after it I don’t want kids going down the wrong path or getting into trouble with the police. This court is vital for keeping kids engaged with the community."
Looking Ahead
The opening of the Cruyff Court Willie Miller marks a new chapter for Tillydrone and demonstrates the positive change that can come from community-driven projects As residents gather to watch their children play, the court is a testament to the spirit of Tillydrone a community that, despite challenges, continues to strive for a better future for its youth
Hamish Cattanach sums it up perfectly: "If you pull away one partner, this project might not have happened. It’s a teamwork approach. The Cruyff Foundation couldn't have done this on their own. It needed collective agreement from local residents and all the agencies involved It’s heartwarming to see it well-used This court will be a central location for a long time to come It’s absolutely brilliant It’s definitely been a success, no doubt about that "

Volunteers’ Week 2024: Stories from Aberdeen
As Aberdeen celebrates the exciting 40th anniversary of Volunteers’ Week this year, ACVO visited volunteers from Alcohol and Drugs Action and Four Pillars. They tell their stories about being a volunteer, their experiences with giving back their time and how they each make a huge difference in their communities
Alcohol and Drugs Action
“I'm a Peer Support Worker with Aberdeen in Recovery, and I volunteer with Alcohol and Drugs Action My journey with volunteering began many years ago when I started my recovery journey with ADA Despite organisational changes, I continued volunteering because it gave me a sense of purpose, built my confidence, and it’s something I really enjoy From handing out leaflets to co-facilitating groups and training courses, volunteering gives me a sense of focus, and has helped guide me through nine years of selfdiscovery and personal development
“Through volunteering, I’ve gained the confidence to get in to further education and make that transition into employment with Aberdeen in Recovery Today, I find myself doing things I never imagined, like hosting a radio show and speaking publicly about my experiences At Aberdeen in Recovery, we share our stories to show others that recovery is possible My journey from feeling worthless to embracing my potential shows how powerful volunteering can be I think volunteering is great because I believe in giving back and offering hope to others who may be on a similar journey ”

“I lost my brother to addiction and I knew he found recovery before he passed I know how recovery and volunteering helped him so I thought, well, if I can come and volunteer, and I can give back to somebody else, and maybe help them on their road to recovery.
“I'm the Service Manager for recovery services within Alcohol and Drugs Action, and we see volunteering as a fundamental part of what we offer At ADA, we provide various opportunities for volunteers to engage with their local community, helping people feel a sense of wellbeing and fulfilment From running gardening groups to facilitating craft sessions, our volunteers play a vital role in creating positive experiences for both themselves and those they support
“When people start to volunteer, they start to recognise that actually, ‘I can show up when I should show up, and I can be responsible, and I can help somebody else in some small way ’
“We've seen volunteers that have moved on to higher education or employment within the health and social care field and I think those are some of the real success stories that we've seen A lot of volunteers say in undertaking roles with us they have found a purpose again and they are of the mindset that they want to give back in a way to the organisation
“People also discover new passions and interests; the craft group is key example of this with people being able to use talents that have either been long forgotten, or being explored again for the first time ”
“I think with volunteering, sometimes just the simple things can make a huge difference to others – it could be just giving someone a hello, showing you are interested in them, giving them your time Everybody needs support and coming here, even just sitting and having a cup of tea, in, you're here, you're mixing, everyone all talking together Somebody else can just add something to make that person's day so much better
“I've got so much out of volunteering I've met so many people Rhona is an absolute star and I wouldn't have met her if it wasn't through the volunteering I wouldn't know half of the people if it wasn't for the group and it's broadened my knowledge and it makes you appreciate so much more when you know that they're getting something out of it People feel comfortable sharing their experiences here, they leave happy and feeling more connected I do really like volunteering You meet so many different people from so many different walks of life ”

From running gardening groups to facilitating craft sessions, our volunteers play a vital role in creating positive experiences for both themselves and those they support.
“I volunteer as part of the ADA craft group on Fridays and the knit and natter group at the Citadel on Tuesdays I've been with the craft group since August 2019 and honestly I've loved every minute of it. It's such a laid-back atmosphere, and I get to help folks in recovery, as well as their friends and family, who sometimes join us It's like a little community here, you know?
“For me, volunteering isn't just about helping others; it's been a real lifeline during tough times in my own life The camaraderie of the group helped me through some rough patches at work Being part of the group puts me in a good frame of mind and I come away from here a lot happier It's amazing to see how much everyone enjoys themselves here We've created a space where people can come as they are, chat if they feel like it, or just sit back and relax Seeing others flourish in their recovery journey, or just enjoying the company, it's incredibly rewarding Loneliness can be tough, especially during recovery, but here it's different We're all just here to support each other and have a good time. It's pretty special, if you ask me ”

“My journey with ADA began as a volunteer just before lockdown. Witnessing the struggles of many in Aberdeen with addiction, I felt drawn to ADA's values and mission Volunteering not only offered me invaluable experience but also paved the way for my transition into a health and social care course at college The support and mentorship I received were huge in building my confidence and interpersonal skills, ultimately leading me to become a sessional worker with ADA.
“For me, volunteering is about giving back and finding purpose It's an opportunity to explore different passions and break down barriers, fostering a sense of equality and community Through volunteering, I've formed meaningful friendships, like with Alan at Aberdeen in Recovery Having experienced family loss, I find solace in supporting others on their recovery journey It's been a really positive experience, allowing me to both grow personally and make a difference in the lives of others I think having as many diverse people in your life as possible, it just breaks down those barriers and breaks down social inequality as well
“I think volunteering can help people have a sense of purpose I find that a lot of people really don't know what they want in life, especially younger people, and they find volunteering is really good for them Trying different things, experiencing working within different organisations, working with different people, discovering new passions, feeling a sense of purpose; it can only be good for people, can’t it?”

Four Pillars
“I've been volunteering at Four Pillars for about a year and a half now, having started volunteering in general back in 2017 Initially, I was introduced to Four Pillars by my employability support worker, and from the moment I walked in, I felt an overwhelming sense of comfort and community Meeting Linda, our volunteer coordinator, and starting hub shifts were pivotal moments for me Volunteering here has been a way to reconnect with the community and work towards improving my mental health The flexibility and support we get as volunteers are incredible If you're struggling, you can step back, but the environment also encourages you to contribute as much as you can I've made numerous friends, both volunteers and service users, and I cherish the connections I've built One of my favourite aspects of volunteering is getting to know people and helping them in any way I can, which has always been a passion of mine
“In the past six months, I've expanded my role to include working with the teen group every other Friday. Despite initial nerves, I've grown to love working with these teens, offering them a safe space to be themselves Hosting Dungeons & Dragons as a Game Master has been particularly rewarding, attracting more teens to the group and enriching their experience Living in Peterhead, the isolation I felt before discovering Four Pillars in Aberdeen was profound This place is a lifeline, providing a safe, welcoming space for the queer community to connect The transformation I’ve seen in myself
Amber-SenseofBelonging
and others, like a quiet service user who became a vibrant volunteer, highlights the positive impact of volunteering Joining Four Pillars might be the change someone needs, offering a sense of belonging and a way to give back It’s more than just a boost to your CV; it’s a way to find a family and support within your community ”
“For about three years now, I’ve been coming along to Four Pillars and it really has been my sanctuary When I lost my job due to my multiple sclerosis during the lockdowns, this place became a lifeline Before finding Four Pillars, I used to travel down south to find places where I felt welcomed But now, Aberdeen has become my refuge
“Even with the challenges I face, I'm committed to giving back Volunteering one day a week and supporting events like Pride allows me to contribute, even in small ways I like to give something back, even if it's just a little Drawing from my own experiences, I understand the struggles many face From Section 28 to the fear of physical abuse, I get it For me, Four Pillars isn't just a place it's a lifeline for those who feel isolated and a beacon of hope for those in need of guidance and understanding
“Without places like this, people don't know where to turn Here, they can find advice, support, and a safe space to be themselves, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity ”

Volunteering here has been a way to reconnect with the community and work towards improving my mental health. The flexibility and support we get as volunteers are incredible. If you're struggling, you can step back, but the environment also encourages you to contribute as much as you can.
Before becoming a Support and Development Worker t Four Pillars, I was a volunteer here Volunteering elped me regain confidence and develop skills after eing out of work for six and a half years due to mental ealth challenges I had originally been a service user at our Pillars, and as I started to build up confidence, I realised I wanted to get back to work and give a little bit back So, I began volunteering to be more supportive and helpful rather than just sitting about in the hub all day It was about being there for others and also getting back into the habit of working after such a long break
“As a volunteer, I supported people in the hub and joined outreach projects, offering a listening ear and a helping hand wherever needed. Whether it was cleaning or assisting with events like Pride, I found fulfilment in contributing to the community Volunteering was not only about giving back but also about reestablishing a routine and preparing myself for employment again When a job opportunity opened up at Four Pillars, I took the leap, and it's been an incredibly positive journey ever since I'm now grateful to support other volunteers who, like me, are on a path to self-development and empowerment
“When I first came out, there wasn't anything like Four Pillars It was a confusing and isolating experience, which took a toll on my mental health Now, being part of this organisation allows me to ensure that others have the support I wished I had Seeing people’s growth and transformation here is one of the most rewarding aspects of my job While volunteering might seem daunting at first, Four Pillars is a welcoming place for everyone, and I encourage others to join us in making a difference It's not just about volunteering; it's about becoming part of a supportive community where everyone's welcome and valued ”

Funding
TheNeighbourhoodEcosystemFundlaunchedWednesday22ndMay 2024toenablecommunity-ledprojectgroupsinScotlandtodesignand deliverlocalnaturerestorationprojects.
The aim of the Neighbourhood Ecosystem Fund is to help communities
develop their ideas for nature restoration into a pipeline of deliverable projects with a whole ecosystem approach Funding will be administered by Inspiring Scotland and supported by the Carman Family Foundation, the Scottish Government’s Nature Restoration Fund (managed by NatureScot) and other funders.
Erica Judge, Director of Funds at Inspiring Scotland said: “We know from previous work at Inspiring Scotland that there is a desire for community–led projects to further local development.
“The fund’s goal is to inspire, encourage and enable communities to explore and deliver ambitious ecosystem restoration projects locally.”
Bill Carman said: “We need to restore Scotland’s nature – to revive damaged, degraded or destroyed ecosystems. Rising temperatures and extreme weather are hampering this revival.
“A more sustainable world where nature thrives and people can enjoy it, can only be achieved through multiple and widespread community-led effort. We aim to help raise awareness and address barriers faced by community-led efforts.”
NatureScot’s Head of Funding Iain Sim said: “It is great to see initiatives like the Neighbourhood Ecosystem Fund tackling the unprecedented nature-climate crisis within local communities, helping us to bring about the nature transformation Scotland desperately needs Our local communities across Scotland are
vital for steering and helping achieve positive and sustained change that benefits people and nature.”
Community groups can apply for up to £13,500 which can contribute to nature development activities, specialist consultancy, new staff posts and core costs. They will also receive £1,500 in professional fundraising support in addition to their grant.
The deadline for applications is 12pm Wednesday 3rd July 2024. For more information and how to apply, please visit inspiringscotland.org.uk/fund/ neighbourhood-ecosystem-fund
