ACVO UPDATES

Latest update from The Promise Scotland from Gette Cobban, Senior Development Officer - ACVO TSI

The Promise Aberdeen Third Sector Forum “Another year starting and I’m sure everyone is now full steam ahead. I have a few updates that I am keen to share with you.” writes Gette Cobban, Senior Development Officer - ACVO TSI I highlighted our new third sector forum a couple of month’s ago and I thought readers might welcome an update. The interest in the forum has grown with 46 individuals from 33 third sector organisations linking up on a regular basis. As well as looking at how the group can increase involvement with the Children’s Services Board and through this impact on community planning the group has been looking at wider issues. In October we welcomed Rachel Keenan our Aberdeen Promise Delivery Partner from Promise Scotland and we also shared information around current Young Carer’s activity and support in the city. In December colleagues from Aberlour, Aberdeen Foyer, Action for Children and GREC shared information about their current work with unaccompanied asylum seeking children in the city. We also welcomed James Simpson from Aberdeen City Council to highlight how the third sector could increase involvement in community planning.

The meeting on 5th February will be held at Aberdeen Foyer and we will hear from Dinah Sandoval about their Reboot project currently taking place at Northfield Academy. The forum is an opportunity for this growing number of members to share their own news and get a chance to know each other better. We hope through this networking opportunity that relationships and contacts will continue to build. All topics highlighted at the meetings will be at the request of members and we continue to welcome new members going forward. If anyone would like to talk with me about coming along to the forum just drop me an email georgette.cobban@acvo.org.uk Further meetings will take place in April, May, August, October and December. Finally, a thank you to VSA, Four Pillars and Aberdeen Foyer who have kindly acted as hosts for these first meetings. A comfortable setting with coffee/tea & biscuits provided is greatly appreciated.

ACVO UPDATES

Improving outcomes for children & inspiring Dads & families with Dad’s Rock “I had a lovely meeting in mid-January with Maddy Welsh from Dads Rock... This was a new organisation for me and it was great to hear about the work they are doing supporting Dads at that pre & post-natal time. We all know what a challenge it can be becoming a new parent for the first time with all the excitement yet still moving into the unknown. Maddy told me that the charity started with two local Dads getting together and setting up a Dads and kids playgroup, setting up something that they themselves felt comfortable with and as it grew welcomed new Dads encouraging them to come along. The group grew from that one playgroup and Dads Rock now offers a variety of important projects. Many of their projects are in the central belt area but important for Aberdeen is

that they offer an online peer support service for new Dads and Dads to be. Volunteer peer supporters who are parents themselves, a mix of men & women, are matched with a “new” Dad and they meet online for six, 1hour, 1:1 chats answering any questions, listening to any thoughts, worries or concerns. Someone to talk to who’s “been there” and knows how this new time can feel. Maddy was telling me that she would love to increase the number of referrals from Aberdeen and also the number of volunteers. All volunteers go through a course of preparation with Maddy and have a PVG check. If you would like more information about accessing the service or becoming a volunteer have a look at their website and/or get in touch and have a chat with Maddy at maddy@dadsrock.org.uk

New dad to run from Glasgow to Aberdeen in 36-hour challenge to raise money for charities A new dad is to run from Glasgow to Aberdeen – the equivalent of six non-stop marathons – to raise money for two charities which have supported his premature son, who was born with an extremely rare genetic condition.

A

ndrew Smith (29) is hoping to raise £50,000 for Ronald McDonald House Glasgow and The Archie

Foundation, the start and end points of his epic challenge on June 1. Baby Louie was born on September 9, arriving 12 weeks early and weighing 3lb 7oz, taking his dad and mum Nancie Mead (23) by surprise during a ‘babymoon’ holiday. Louie was cared for in the neonatal unit at the Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital, where he began to have frequent apnoea episodes - a sudden cessation of breathing that lasts for at least 20 seconds. Andrew explained: “Louie had several procedures including an MRI scan, blood tests, CT scans and x-rays, checking for obstructions in his respiratory system. One of his consultants noticed Louie making involuntary movements, which was one of the factors that led to us undergoing genetic testing to see if that could help to explain Louie’s condition. L-R: Paula Cormack, Andrew Smith and Nancie Mead.

“Nancie, Louie and I all provided samples for genetic testing to find out whether there were changes in any of his genes that could be causing his health problems.” At just seven weeks old, Louie was flown to the Royal Hospital for Children, Glasgow, for surgery on his windpipe to try to reduce his apnoea. The family spent two weeks in the hospital, with Andrew and Nancie being provided with accommodation in Ronald McDonald House Glasgow, an independent Scottish charity with no government funding. While they were in Glasgow, the family were told that Louie has an ultra-rare genetic disorder, thought to affect less than 100 people in the world. Neither parent carries the mutated gene. “We were under the impression that the surgery would be the cure to his apnoea, so the diagnosis was a huge shock, especially as there are thought to be less than 100 people in the world with the same disorder as Louie,” said Andrew. “He will have some additional challenges or require regular visits to the children’s hospital over the coming months and years, but he’s a healthy, thriving wee boy who is alert and gaining weight.” After a move to the Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital from the neonatal unit, Andrew and Nancie hope to be able to take Louie home soon and settle into family life. The new parents have received immeasurable support from both The Archie Foundation and Ronald McDonald House Glasgow. For Andrew, simply making a donation would not be enough to repay the support the couple has received from the charities. Already an ultra-runner - a passion that began during the Covid-19 pandemic - Andrew wanted to take

on a challenge that would combine his love of running and the charities that have done so much to support the Smith family. He will leave Ronald McDonald House Glasgow at 7am on Saturday, June 1 and run the equivalent of six marathons back-to-back, finishing at the Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital around 36 hours later. The journey will be around 165 miles, with a route likely to take in Glasgow, Stirling, Perth, Dundee, Montrose, Arbroath, Stonehaven and Aberdeen. He plans to run it in one go, with food stops on the way and micro naps at the side of the road - but no overnight stops. “I have always had ambitions to push my own limits and my longest run to date is 100 miles of the Moray Way, which I completed in 21 hours 30 minutes. I was absolutely hooked,” said Andrew, who took up running just six years ago and quickly progressed from a 10km race in Aberdeen to taking on an unofficial 41-mile ultra-marathon from Dyce to Fraserburgh during lockdown. He will be supported by his training partner Jamie Pallister and coach Meryl Cooper, as well as family and friends. “We are overwhelmingly grateful to

both The Archie Foundation and Ronald McDonald House Glasgow for all the kindness and care they have given Louie and us. Families rely on the kindness and generosity of the charities. Not once were we asked for anything and both charities gave us a safe space on hospital grounds. “Once we are home from hospital, I devote as much time as possible to raising money and giving back to the charities that have supported us and our amazing boy.” The proceeds from Andrew’s run will be split equally between The Archie Foundation and Ronald McDonald House Glasgow. Paula Cormack, chief executive of The Archie Foundation, said: “We are incredibly grateful to Andrew for taking on such an ambitious and amazing fundraising challenge. Our share of the proceeds will go directly to supporting other babies, children and their families at the Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital and the neonatal unit where Louie has been cared for. We wish Andrew lots of luck with the run in June.” To support Andrew’s challenge, visit his GoFundMe page. To find out more about The Archie Foundation, visit their website at archie.org

Support for small organisations working with children and young people Children in Scotland, the national children’s sector network, has launched a free membership category supporting small organisations to flourish with ‘invaluable’ opportunities for learning, knowledge sharing and collaboration.

A

cutely aware of how challenging the current climate is for organisations working

across children’s services, the introduction of Children in Scotland’s free member category aims to support as many organisations as possible in their pursuit to better the lives of children, young people and their families. Organisations with an annual income below £50,000 have the opportunity to join Children in Scotland membership and utilise benefits including access to training and events, networking opportunities and exclusive member publications. This free category expands on the 12-month free offer that was introduced in 2023 and has already positively impacted small organisations working across Scotland. Highland Action for Little Ones, a charity supporting families and children in poverty and fleeing domestic violence, joined Children in Scotland’s membership in March 2023 and shares how its team has made the most of the benefits: “We are a very small charity with limited income streams, so having the opportunity to engage with Children in Scotland through our free membership has been invaluable. Our membership keeps

us updated with legislation, policy, and what's going on in and around Scotland to support children. The membership benefits we value are the Insight magazine, full of interesting articles, our discounts, and access to training and podcasts.” Simon Massey, Head of Engagement and Learning at Children in Scotland said: “We’ve been working hard to keep the activities Children in Scotland charge for as low-cost and accessible as possible, so I’m really pleased that we’ve been able to extend the free Membership offer to a wider group of organisations. This will provide the opportunity for support and connections for smaller organisations across Scotland, who otherwise would not have been able to access our Membership service. Please join us and help us deliver on our vision that all children in Scotland have an equal chance to flourish.” If you are an organisation with an annual income below £50,000 and would like to join Children in Scotland membership, please complete an application form at childreninscotland.org.uk/join-us Alternatively, you can email membership@childreninscotland.org .uk to find out more.

Suicide prevention in your community There are a number of myths out there still and this feeds into fear people may have of telling someone about their suicidal thoughts, and that people have of asking. This is why it’s so important that everyone is supported to feel more confident about these conversations. Guest article from

JUSTINE DUNBAR COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT OFFICER AT SAMH FOR ABERDEEN CITY

I

f you were struggling with suicidal thoughts, or worried about someone, would you know where to turn and how to ask the question?

With one in 20 people in Scotland thinking about suicide at any one time, the North East Suicide Prevention Team firmly believe we all need to be comfortable with asking, ‘Are you feeling suicidal?’. For those living with their thoughts or at crisis, being listened to with compassion and kindness shows them they aren’t alone. The Team, hosted by SAMH, works across Aberdeen City, Aberdeenshire and Moray and has recently expanded to include Community Engagement Officers and a Bereavement Link worker. They aim to reduce the stigma around talking about suicide and to reach as many people as possible with their resources and training We want to raise awareness as far and wide as possible. There are a number of myths out there still and this feeds into fear people may have of telling someone

about their suicidal thoughts, and that people have of asking. This is why it’s so important that everyone is supported to feel more confident about these conversations. I’ve been encouraged by the positive reception I’ve received from a range of third sector, community groups and businesses. There’s been such an appetite for more suicide prevention information and training in the City. I’m looking forward to working with as many people and attending as many events as possible The team believe that suicide is everyone’s business. Through delivering training and resources they want to help our communities be equipped to keep themselves and others safe.

Unlocking Potential

with Aberlour Futures’ Foundation Apprenticeship Programme Aberlour Futures, part of Aberlour Children’s Charity, is an SQA accredited training centre that delivers comprehensive courses and qualifications for the early learning and school-aged childcare workforce in Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire. One notable programme is their Foundation Apprenticeship in Social Services (Children and Young People) SCQF 6, a one-year course designed for S5-6 secondary school students in Aberdeen. Equivalent to a Higher qualification, this programme covers both theoretical and practical elements. Students learn skills suitable for a career working with children and young people, whilst simultaneously gaining real-life experience in a workplace setting. Speaking with ACVO News, Susan Greig, Aberlour Futures Service Manager, Linda Strachan and Hannah Simpson, SQA Assessors and Tutors, discuss the Foundation Apprenticeship (FA) programme and share the benefits of the qualification for students.

ACVO News February 2024

“Working as a tutor for Aberlour’s FA programme involves teaching theory classes twice a week for students within school, as well as visiting them at their work placement setting which they attend once a week,” Hannah says. “The theory that the students learn in class is put it into practice during their work placement, making it a fully beneficial, well-rounded experience. “We develop the course materials in line with SQA standards for the FA programme, and each year we regularly review and refine our approach to ensure the course suits the student’s needs.” Susan expands on this: “What makes Aberlour stand out is our method of delivery. We deliver the programme in schools where they feel more secure. “The students are familiar with a school environment, they have additional support onsite from the school if they need it and of course from our Aberlour tutors.” “It is a challenging but rewarding course that ensures students are well-equipped for starting a career working with children and young people,” Linda adds. “We need to make sure that people who work to support children are the best qualified and experienced.” Students are required to have or be studying at least three National 5 subjects, including English,

for entry to the FA programme. They also need a supporting personal statement from themselves and their guidance teachers to ensure that the course is the right choice for them. “The Foundation Apprenticeship is a great qualification,” Susan says.

“With our support at Aberlour, we can help get that young person to a place where they really engage, really enjoy and even consider other occupations that they had not considered before.” While the FA programme is popular amongst students aspiring to work within the childcare sector, the qualification opens a wide variety of different career pathways for young people. Linda highlights this, saying: “We often see young people who study the course become social workers, teachers, paediatricians, counsellors, even going to work in family law. The FA programme gives them a starting point, helping them understand children’s development and working with others which can help with these types of careers. “The qualification covers a range of skills including communication, health and safety and safeguarding. These are all transferable skills that the young people can carry over to other jobs. “We also cover meta skills which are highly sought by a lot of employers, such as collaboration, problem-solving and critical thinking skills.” “As part of the FA programme, we deliver Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

opportunities where we provide additional training experiences for our students,” says Susan. “This is when we have industry experts come into class to share their expertise with students, such as the art of storytelling and outdoor play, giving them ideas that they can use in their work placements. “We also invite professionals from a range of careers into school to talk and engage with the pupils.” “For example, we recently had a physiotherapist, an occupational therapist and a speech and language therapist come into one of my classes to speak about their roles in the children and young people sector,” Hannah says. “These talks give the students an opportunity to ask these professionals questions and to find out more about a particular career. The professionals share a lot of stories from their role which is nice because it makes it more relatable for the students. “Again, this allows our students to see the possibilities of the FA programme, and to open their eyes to the different career pathways that they can follow with their qualification.” Speaking further about the benefits of the FA qualification, Linda discusses the opportunity for students to work to their own pace: “Although there are still timescales to be met, we accommodate students who need some extra support. “It is also very much a group feel and a nice nurturing environment where the students are treated like young adults.” “This continues into the work placement as well,” Hannah adds. “They are not just treated as a student; they are treated as part of the team. “Whether they are in a nursery or having a one-toone with the teacher who is in their class, the student is respected across the board. “Having the opportunity to work with other professionals as an equal, gaining real-life experience, and seeing what their future could look

like when working with children and young people is a huge benefit of the FA programme.” “At Aberlour Futures we have a great team, we are all so passionate about making a difference to the young people we work with and go above and beyond to make this happen” says Susan. “I feel really proud of the students that I tutor,” says Hannah. “Especially when I go and visit them on placement. I can see they have really taken on board what they have been learning in class by putting theory into practice. “Even little things like making sure they are at the same physical level when talking to a child, rather than speaking down at them. It shows that the students are listening and caring about how they are making that child feel. It is really rewarding to see.”

essentially their story. We see their confidence build throughout the duration of the FA course, and you can’t help but feel absolute pride seeing everything that they achieve.” “We want schools and professionals to understand the worth of a Foundation Apprenticeship,” Linda continues. “It is for students that want to learn something different, by choosing this vocational qualification they can ensure that this is the pathway they want to take.” “We encourage any young person to get in touch, or speak with their guidance teachers, if they believe the FA programme would be of benefit to them and their future in working with children and young people.”

Linda echoes this, saying: “I feel utter pride being able to play a part in their career progression, and

Bank of Scotland Foundation launches new fund strategy:

‘Building a Brighter Future for Scotland’

Edinburgh based charity, Bank of Scotland Foundation, has announced the launch of its new five-year strategy - "Building a Brighter Future for Scotland." The strategy aims to fund, support and champion small and local charities that work towards improving the quality of life for some of Scotland's most vulnerable people.

A

bout the development, Donald MacKechnie, Chair of Bank of Scotland Foundation

said, "As a responsive and flexible funder, we're proud to introduce more unrestricted funding and more multi-year funding through our new strategy. We know from talking to charities that unrestricted funding gives them much greater scope to cover essential costs and deal with challenges quickly and effectively. In addition, multi-year funding encourages a more strategic approach to grant-making and offers security and stability, enabling charities to plan and become more sustainable.” The first multi-year programme under the new strategy, Empower, will launch in early February, offering real security and certainty for charities. This programme will offer a

three-year unrestricted grant of £150,000 (£50,000 per annum) and collaborating with Lloyds Banking Group, the Foundation also aims to identify opportunities to add strategic value for funded charities and help them grow stronger and thrive beyond the lifetime of their grant.

enabling charities to use their grants in the way that helps them best.

Two further multi-year programmes will be launched later in the year. Energise is a multi-year grants programme supporting small and local charities that are closest to the real issues facing our communities. Available to new (and more established) charities this programme offers a two-year unrestricted grant of £20,000 (£10,000 per annum), enabling charities to use their grants in the way that helps them best.

The third programme, Enable, is an innovative, joint grants programme with the Foundation’s sole funder, Lloyds Banking Group, aimed at boosting community volunteering. Funding will be provided to charities to support projects delivered through volunteers, with Lloyds Banking Group’s colleagues across Scotland volunteering their time and skills to help deliver the projects and support the charities. This programme offers a grant of £30,000 - £90,000 over three years (£10k-£30k per annum) for volunteering projects/costs/initiatives.

The third programme, Enable, is an innovative, joint grants programme of £20,000 (£10,000 per annum),

Community Planning

Your Neighbourhood, Your City, Your Plans: What matters to you?

You spoke, we’re listening

I

n October and November 2023, residents of Aberdeen were asked to tell

Community Planning Aberdeen “what matters to you” to help inform the refreshed Citywide Local Outcome Improvement Plan and Locality Plans ( LOIP ). At the end of January 2024, there were 5 thematic stakeholder sessions on economy, children and young people, adults, place and community empowerment, to bring together Community Planning Aberdeen, the Locality Empowerment Groups and Priority Neighbourhood Partnerships members to hear the proposals from the Groups and to discuss whether the proposed improvement aims are being targeted on the right issues and the action we need to take and to ensure the delivery of our ambitions by 2026. The Outcome Improvement Groups and Locality Empowerment Group and Priority Neighbourhood

Partnerships are using the outcome of the engagement to inform and develop the refreshed Plans. There will be a final overall consultation on the draft Plans in February/March 2024. This will be the last chance to have your final say, so please do so – your opinions are wanted and your input will be invaluable. In the meantime, you can read the outcome of the engagement and keep up to date on the LOIP refresh, on the Community Planning Aberdeen website

Update from Susan Morrison, Development Officer (Community Planning Partnership) at ACVO TSI susan.morrison@acvo.org.uk

And just like that - it’s February already. I know that for a lot of us, this month has been particularly busy and full-on. I’ve had the pleasure of being at the three Priority Neighbourhood Partnerships (PNPs) meetings in the North, Central & Torry areas, as well as the three Locality Empowerment Groups (LEGs) meetings in the North, Central & South Localities. Whilst these are facilitated by Aberdeen City Council and Aberdeen City Health & Social Care Partnership, community members are very welcome and encouraged to come along and take part. Please contact me to find out more about how to become involved. In addition to valuable discussion about the Locality Outcome Improvement Plan (LOIP) refresh, it’s also been inspiring and humbling to hear about the amazing local people and third sector organisations working and supporting at the frontline in their communities. I’m now more than ever hopeful and optimistic about what we can achieve in 2024.

Community Heat Development Programme Local Energy Scotland The Scottish Government’s Community and Renewable Energy Scheme (CARES) supports communities to engage with, participate in, and benefit from the energy transition to net zero emissions. Local Energy Scotland has launched the Community Heat Development Programme to work with eligible community organisations and groups of householders to help develop their ideas for locally-generated, low and zero carbon heat project ideas. Successful applicants will receive technical support to appraise the feasibility of their project. The programme will support community led approaches to decarbonise heat. The programme won’t pay to install renewable technologies or energy efficiency measures in your homes. Instead, expert advisors will work with successful applicants to consider the feasibility of your community heat project idea and will give you advice on next steps, including any potential routes for further funding. Who can apply Local Energy Scotland will accept applications from both: groups of householders constituted community organisations. Groups of householders and community organisations will need to evidence good levels of interest from their local community/neighbours. Community organisations must be constituted, non-profit distributing community organisations, including organisations with charitable status.
