ACVOTeamand Boardcollaborate tohelpshapeour strategicdirection

Last month saw the ACVO team and Board convene for a strategic workshop aimed at developing our plans and objectives for the upcoming year.

The workshop provided a platform for discussions around short and long term aims and how we can best work with, and represent the third sector in Aberdeen. The themes discussed, and thoughts which emerged from the morning, underscore the collective commitment of both the ACVO team and Board towards refining our strategic direction. From the dialogue came areas of key focus and we look forward to further developing and implementing some new and innovative actionable strategies around this.

We always welcome discussion with organisations working within the third sector in Aberdeen and would like to hear from you! If you would like to meet with the team, get in touch to start the conversation!

PreparingfortheGeneralElection

It’sanunderstatementtosayithas beenanothertumultuousyearin Britishpolitics.Somedaysithasbeen impossibletopredictwhatwillhappen next,butonethingisacertainty-aUK GeneralElectionwillbeheldbefore theendofJanuary2025

Not another one! I hear you say – echoing the feelings of Brenda from Bristolbut it has been a whole 2

years since the Local Government elections and there are certainly plenty of issues that I know our sector wants elected representatives to take action on. At the same time I know there is a lot of reluctance to get involved in the political process or to be seen to favour one side or another But ask yourself this – if we don’t ask for what we want from our political leaders, how will we ever get it?

Charities can engage in campaigning, but there are limitations It's important to remember that advocating for

specific issues relevant to your mission can be a powerful tool for achieving your goals.

OSCR says a charity can campaign if: (i) It is advancing the charitable purposes; (ii) The governing document does not prevent the activity; (iii) It is not advancing a political party and; (iv) It can show it is acting in the charity’s best interests

Considering the impact on your organisation’s reputation should not be underestimated too

As well as this useful guidance from OSCR, the Electoral Commission has a series of resources to help organisations navigate the issue of electoral law and whether you need to register as a non-party campaigner during an election period They also cover topics such as holding hustings and how to engage the public in the democratic process

If you are thinking about how you engage with elected representatives and candidates in the upcoming General Election, ACVO would be pleased to hear your plans!

Thirdsectorhub forAberdeen?

ACVO is set to carry out a feasibility study into the possibility of creating a Third Sector Hub in Aberdeen, thanks to the UK Government’s Shared Prosperity Fund.

Over the past few months we have heard a growing demand for collaboration and sharing of knowledge and resources.

A dedicated hub in the city could develop a new dynamic and supportive ecosystem that empowers organisations in the third sector to work more efficiently, effectively, and collectively for the benefit of the diverse communities in Aberdeen

The goal of the feasibility study is to equip ACVO and other stakeholders

with the information needed to make informed decisions about the viability and potential outcomes of establishing a Third Sector Hub in Aberdeen. The study will provide a thorough analysis of the project's feasibility from various perspectives to aid our planning and decisionmaking processes, and to provide potential funders with the information required to assess the deliverability and likely impact of the proposal

The work will go out to tender for a delivery partner shortly, with the final report expected by the end of the year

This guide is aimed at organisations who want a basic overview of the Equality Act, what it means, and how

The Scottish Parliament’s Economy and Fair Work Committee has published its report of their inquiry into a just transition for the North East and Moray

ACVO gave evidence to the inquiry when it visited Aberdeen We urged the committee to consider appropriate revenue funding for the third sector as well as capital grants, asked them to consider the wider social impact of third sector projects as well as economic measures, and explained that capacity building in communities was essential to a just transition so that everyone has fair access to funding

The committee made a number of recommendations to the Scottish Government including a recognition of the need for communities to be supported to access more than just the participatory budgeting element of the Just Transition Fund They have asked the Scottish Government to explore how this might be achieved.

Clan Cancer Support has announced it will deliver a new sculpture trail in 2025 which will

see giant BookBenches appearing in the north-east, Moray, Orkney and Shetland

The announcement, made on World Book Day (7th March 2024), marks the charity’s third trail project with Light the North (2021) and The Big Hop Trail (2023) raising a combined total of more than £520,000 for Clan services.

Clan chose the BookBench sculpture, which depicts an open book, because of its lifeline listening support service which enables anyone impacted by a cancer diagnosis to open up and tell their story.

The charity hopes the sculpture, which is 1.4 metres wide and can seat two adults, will encourage people to take time to reflect on their wellbeing as they enjoy discovering artwork on the trail when its live from July – September next year

Fiona Fernie, Clan’s CEO, said: “Sculpture trails have been hugely important to us over the past few years They raised a significant amount of income as we recovered from the pandemic and helped us engage with our communities across the regions we serve

“The beginning of any client journey at Clan is about opening up and sharing your story, so the BookBench sculpture resonated with us It’s a functional bench which will allow next year’s trailgoers to take a moment for themselves and enjoy the beautiful surroundings we’re so lucky to have on our doorsteps.

“For artists, it’s the ideal canvas to depict the stories connected to our regions, celebrate the tales of our

“We’re beyond excited to announce our next chapter in our trail journey and will now begin to develop the project with key partners across our communities ahead of the BookBenches being unveiled in the wild next summer ”

Delivered in partnership with Wild in Art, the trail will give the public access to a free and immersive art exhibition with local and UK based artists invited to submit their designs for the sculptures later this year.

Charlie Langhorne, managing director and co-founder of Wild in Art said: ““Wild in Art has a long history in Scotland and we are delighted to be partnering with Clan Cancer Support once again on our third trail together.

“I have no doubt that the BookBench sculptures will capture everyone’s imagination and bring artists, young people, communities and businesses together to create something very special next summer ”

The charity is now actively recruiting for a sculpture trail project manager to oversee and deliver the development of the project, leading a dedicated project team to ensure the trail’s success.

A sponsorship brochure is now available which details the various opportunities for businesses of all sizes who would like to support the project. Packages start at £450 and a £500 discount on sculpture sponsorship is currently running until the end of March.

MSPpresentsCamphillSchool Aberdeenwithparliamentarymotion

CamphillSchoolAberdeenhasbeenpresentedwithaparliamentary motioninrecognitionofitsnewprojecttobuildthefirstfullyinclusive OutdoorSensoryAdventureandLearningPlaygroundinAberdeen.

Once open, the playpark will be free at the point of access for all children and young people with sensory disorders who

would benefit from accessing relaxed play sessions.

The motion was presented by Liam Kerr, MSP for the North East Scotland region and received cross-party support from fellow local and national MSPs.

Camphill School Aberdeen provides sector-leading day and residential services to children and young people with learning disabilities and complex additional support needs, empowering them to reach their fullest potential

The playground, which is to be built at the charity’s Camphill Estate campus, near Milltimber, has been designed to reduce sensory overload and engage sensory experiences such as touch, sight, sound and smell The design also

includes a diverse range of colours, natural textures, sounds and interactive features that encourage exploration and play, fostering a holistic approach to child development

A recent survey of Camphill School Aberdeen parents, where around 100 children and young people from across Scotland use its day and residential services, reveals that 78% feel unable to access public parks because of judgement by the public, sensory concerns and challenging behaviours.

When open, the playground will be accessible through a booking system to ensure sessions remain relaxed. This will enable the children and their families to have the space they need to have a positive experience and reduce sensory overload.

Camphill School Aberdeen unveiled plans for the playground project in February having received £250,976

from the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund which is supported by Aberdeen City Council The donation will support the development of one of three zones that will make up the playground Camphill School Aberdeen is still fundraising for the remaining two zones and really needs to secure additional public support to ensure they can create this transformational space.

Alex Busch, Executive Director at Camphill School Aberdeen, said: “It is an honour to have the Scottish Parliament recognise our inclusive Outdoor Sensory Adventure and Learning Playground and we thank Liam Kerr MSP for raising the motion and all parties that supported it.

“The playground will be the first of its kind in Aberdeen and has been codesigned by the young people here at

NEWS 10 ACVO News April 2024

Camphill School Aberdeen to ensure it meets the needs of the children and young people who will use the playground when it opens We are also very proud that it has been endorsed by the National Autistic Society ”

The launch of this project is part of the charity’s wider Building Futures, Transforming Lives campaign which aims to raise £10 million in 10 years

The campaign will allow the charity to open its doors to more young people with learning disabilities and their families who desperately need specialist support, increasing its capacity by 60% over 10 years.

The construction of phase one of this appeal is currently underway. A brand new 11-bedroom residential home and a sustainable social enterprise, Murtle Market, are being built on the charity’s Murtle Estate in Bieldside

Liam Kerr MSP visited Camphill Estate to present the motion to representatives from Camphill School Aberdeen When there, Mr Kerr toured the estate, met some of the young people who benefit from the lifechanging support of Camphill School Aberdeen and was shown the site where the new playground will be situated.

Liam Kerr MSP said: “Camphill School Aberdeen’s Building Futures, Transforming Lives appeal is a wonderful campaign that is truly making a difference. It was great to visit Camphill Estate to see firsthand the impact the charity’s work has on its children and young people.

“I was delighted to raise a parliamentary motion to recognise the launch of the first fully inclusive outdoor sensory adventure playground in Aberdeen. Every child has the right to access play so this project is vital to the lives of local children with sensory disorders ”

The playground will be open to all children and young people in the wider community with sensory disorders,

who would benefit from accessing relaxed play sessions

Alex added: “Once open, the playground will have a far-reaching impact and we cannot wait to welcome Additional Support Needs groups, fellow charities and members of the

community, through a booking system, onto our estate to benefit from this new project

“We hope that the community and local businesses of Aberdeen are able to support us in raising the necessary funds to make this project a reality ”

TheArchieFoundation’s fundraisingtops£1.6millionin2023

LocalcharityTheArchieFoundationraisedmorethan£1.6millionin2023to supportbabies,childrenandfamilies,anincreaseof12%onthepreviousyear.

More than 50,000 children and young people visited one of the three hospitals supported by The Archie Foundation

last year - Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital, Tayside Children’s Hospital in Dundee and the Highland Children’s Unit at Raigmore Hospital in Inverness

The Archie Foundation has released its impact figures for 2023, with a total of £1,667,241 raised through fundraising events, donations and grants between 1 January 2023 until 31 December

In addition, the charity’s services directly helped babies, children and families across North Scotland.

Paula Cormack, chief executive of The Archie Foundation, said: “At a time when many of us have been heavily impacted by the cost-of-living crisis it is

heart-warming that people are continuing to support The Archie Foundation

“We never fail to be amazed by the generosity of our supporters It is incredible that our fundraising total has increased so significantly The money will allow us to continue to support young patients and their families in North Scotland.”

During 2023 the charity awarded more than 300 grants totalling almost £550,000, ranging from support for individual families to funding specialist neonatal equipment (£98,307).

The majority of requests for financial aid were from Grampian, with 79% of applications coming from the region. The remaining requests were split between Tayside (12%), Highlands (7%) and the Northern Isles (2%).

Paula said: “Our financial support is available throughout North Scotland We know that unexpected or urgent hospital admissions can put additional strain on family finances. We want families to know that our support is available to them, whether they are looking for help to buy essential items or to cover travel expenses.

“Our grants are wide ranging, and our aim is that every one of them, irrespective of amount, makes a difference to the recipient. Some of the requests we receive are for things that many of us would take for granted, such as the family that received £10 to enable them to book a taxi to take their child to a hospital appointment ”

Paula added: “Our supporters also selflessly donate their time and energy, whether to make a difference in one of our many volunteer roles or to take on a challenge and raise funds and awareness

“We never fail to be amazed by the lengths our supporters will go to In the last 12 months we have had people scaling mountains at home and abroad as well as adults and children taking part in the Battle of the Badges tournaments with the emergency services. This fun event will return to Grampian later this year and will also be hosted in the Highlands and Tayside for the first time ”

The Archie Foundation’s support includes the vital Archie Child Bereavement Service (ACBS), which extended into Tayside, the Highlands,

and Orkney in 2022 The service recorded record referrals in all three regions in 2023 with almost 500 children referred to ACBS last year for free of charge professional support

Recognising that every child is different, and that their experience of grief will be similarly individual, ACBS supports children who have experienced bereavement and provides them with appropriate support and guidance to help them to manage their grief.

The Archie Foundation also provides family accommodation at the Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital. In 2023 more than 1,000 parents benefitted

from this provision The charity provided 3,603 bed nights to the families of babies and children who were being looked after at the Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital

The beneficiaries were drawn from across the North of Scotland, with more than half of the recipients coming from the Highlands, Tayside, Orkney and Shetland

Paula added: “It’s important that we can offer accommodation to families whose children are being cared for in hospital Having access to a home away from home can make all the difference during what can be an extremely stressful time. It’s also another way The

Archie Foundation can help to ease financial pressures families may face ”

The charity’s fundraising campaign to ‘deliver the difference’ at the new Baird Family Hospital, which is under construction on the Foresterhill site, also continued The Archie Foundation has now raised £1,130,143 towards funding the vital finishing touches and additional specialist equipment which will make a world of difference and will transform the clinically state of the art hospital into a world-class facility.

Localcouple’scontributiontoSSAFA,theArmed Forcescharity,tops£4000

Saturday 2nd March saw the 9th coffee morning inspired by Jackie and Colin Hughes to raise money for SSAFA. It was

through the charity that the couple met in 1966 in an Army camp in Malaysia Colin was working as a helicopter pilot and Jackie was employed by SSAFA as a health visitor, helping new mothers whose husbands were away for long periods on exercise 45 years later, in 2011, they started raising money for a cause they hold dear to their hearts

SSAFA Grampian Branch Chair Mike Taitt, speaking on 2nd March, said: 'We are very grateful for the support Jackie and Colin have given the branch over the years, raising £4000 through their coffee mornings. We are thrilled to be adding considerably to that total following this morning's turnout and successful raffle, with all money raised here going directly to supporting local people in the region '

This year the coffee morning looked slightly different. With the support of

the Hughes, the SSAFA Grampian branch put on a ‘Big Brew Up’ hosted at Gordon Barracks and saw 75 people stop in over two hours. Teas, coffees and baked goods were all on offer alongside a brilliant raffle with 13 prizes donated

by local businesses Proceeds from the morning topped £500, all of which will go towards supporting veterans, military families, and members of the Armed Forces across the North East.

SSAFA Grampian currently has 13 caseworkers, all volunteers, who conduct visits, assess needs and distribute funding in a range of cases. Information about the branch, its members and those it has helped was available on the day and the coffee morning presented an opportunity for visitors to meet some of the SSAFA Grampian volunteers

New volunteer Constanza, who was attending her first SSAFA event, said of

the coffee morning: ‘Veterans, volunteers, and their families mingled effortlessly as they shared a common purpose - to uplift and support those who've dedicated their lives through their military service. I look forward to volunteering with SSAFA as a caseworker and to further connect with this beautiful community’.

SSAFA are looking for volunteers to take part in the Kiltwalk and raise money for the charity on Sunday 2nd June. Find out more here.

TouchofLovecelebratesmotherhood forBlackMinorityEthnicfamilies

TouchofLoveorganisedaMother’sDayeventwhichprovedaresoundingsuccess, bringingtogetherAberdeen’sBlackMinorityEthnic(BME)mothersandtheir childrenforadayofcelebration,connection,andculturalexploration.

The event fostered a vibrant space for mothers to share personal experiences, career journeys, and the

challenges they’ve overcome on their paths to integration within Aberdeen Mothers enjoyed lively discussions around emotional well-being, strengthening community bonds, and navigating cultural sensitivities Additionally, the day offered practical exercises on stress management, nutrition, and physical health

Recognising the isolation young people often face, Touch of Love actively included them in the festivities. Children participated in art and craft activities, creating handmade cards for their mothers. Engaging karaoke sessions, energetic dances, and fun games provided opportunities for self-expression, cultural integration, and forging new friendships. By equipping young individuals with confidence, skills and social connections, Touch of Love empowers them to break

free from social barriers and thrive

Most often, black minority mothers face unique challenges such as language barriers, lack of foreign qualification recognition impacting employment, and cultural isolation. Touch of Love addressed these issues by providing a space for mothers to connect with those who share similar backgrounds and traditions. Additionally, delicious local delicacies, reminiscent of home, offered a taste of comfort and combated feelings of homesickness

Understanding the burden of childcare responsibilities, Touch of Love offered onsite support to allow mothers to fully enjoy the event This crucial service removed a significant barrier, allowing mothers to relax, reconnect, and participate in fun activities without the worry of childcare

Jane Akadiri, the Chief Executive of Touch of Love, expressed, "I am profoundly moved by the overwhelming success of

this event It was a powerful demonstration of the strength, resilience, and rich cultural heritage within the Black Minority Ethnic (BME) community of mums here in Aberdeen

Through sharing personal experiences, career journeys, and the challenges of integration, we not only fostered a space for emotional wellbeing and community bonding but also laid the groundwork for meaningful cultural dialogue and understanding Seeing children and mothers come together to share, learn, and celebrate their identities reinforces the importance of our work at Touch of Love and the critical role of community in nurturing a sense of belonging and mutual respect "

Touch of Love’s Mother’s Day event served as a beautiful example of fostering community, celebrating cultural heritage, and empowering both BME mothers and children.

NewcoursefromSharedParenting Scotlandtohelpparentscopewith the‘bereavement’ofnotseeinga childafterdivorceorseparation

Shared Parenting Scotland will launch its Love, Loss and Living course in Aberdeen for the first time at the end of April

The four-session course over six weeks is aimed at supporting parents who are not seeing their children for one reason or other, often following divorce or separation, to help them address their feelings of grief and bereavement

The insight that led to the development of the course became apparent through the monthly support group meetings run by Shared Parenting Scotland in cities across Scotland, including Aberdeen Sometimes the pain and distress of the 'non-resident' parent is palpable among parents who may have been 24/7 mothers or fathers until the relationship breakdown but then find themselves cut adrift.

The course is split into three sections:

Love - exploring the love you have for your child, the neuroscience of love, and the ‘loving-kindness’ meditation

Loss – exploring loss, the impact of your emotions, others’ emotions, the culture of loss and psychological models of loss

Living – exploring healthy strategies, the power of self-care, and setting goals for the next 12 months to help you think positively

The group sessions will be held at the Fountainhall Church Centre in Albyn Place, Aberdeen, and will run on the 7th May, 20th May and 3rd June 2024

The Aberdeen Love, Loss and Living training is funded through the Scottish Government’s Communities Mental Health & Wellbeing Fund, distributed in Aberdeen by ACVO.

Course director for Shared Parenting Scotland, Claire Ross, said “Most of us know how to respond and the words to say that acknowledge and comfort someone who has been recently bereaved but there aren’t equivalent words for the grief and turmoil of a parent who has effectively ‘lost’ a child after separation or divorce.

“This course gives a safe space for participants to understand what is happening in their emotions and thinking and begin to build up their mental resilience and wellbeing.”

Any parent who might benefit from taking par in the course should e mail dm@sharedparenting.scot for more information

More information as well as the course website is available to access online at lovelossandliving.uk

ng upnable storm

for Climate Week North East 2024

As part of this years’ Climate Week North East (15th – 24th March), CFINE delivered an interactive community cooking event with a clear focus on zero food waste.

22 ACVO News April 2024
Zero Waste Cooking Day participants began the session by peeling vegetables for their soup.

The Zero Waste Cooking Day, hosted in partnership with Granite City Good Food, saw eager cooks of all abilities set foot in CFINE’s Cook in the ‘Nook kitchen on Wednesday 20th March to test their skills on pickling, pancake-baking and soup-making – all with minimising food waste in mind

Leading an energetic, engaging class was Sean McVeigh, Development Worker at CFINE: “This is my first time back in the kitchen doing a class for several years

“I wanted to have some fun and have a nice day, but at the same time be informative and share my knowledge in the kitchen with the participants ”

Taking role as sous-chef, CFINE volunteer of nearly eight years Liz Boynton also helped deliver the class: “I have worked with Sean many years ago so it was nice to be invited to come along and help out with the session today.”

The day kicked off with a ‘bung-it-all-in’ soup: potatoes, carrots, cauliflower amongst other vegetables were used. The cooks chopped in unison, tipping their veggies into a massive soup pan along with some boiling water, stock cubes and other seasonings.

dlicious. We can only grow so much on our planet – if it has been grown then we should use it to make

s and carrots, normally instead re-purposed into oven-roasted crispy shreds ready to be used as a flavourful garnish.

With the soup bubbling away, Sean then tasked participants to craft their very own jar of pickle. Some cooks got inventive with their concoctions: pear, apple and even cauliflower leaves were used to fill their re-useable jars, as well as vinegar and a choice of herbs and spices to make the perfect pickle.

“A decent jar of pickle from the shop will cost you £2 50, but it won't be exactly what you want,” Sean emphasises

“These homemade jars of pickles costs us no more than 30p each and has every ingredient that you want in it ”

“It’s really great to see this produce being used creatively, especially the cauliflower leaves which, unsurprisingly, has been the first time I have ever seen them pickled! It’s amazing to see how easy it is to find a use for these offcuts, instead of needlessly throwing them away ”

Speaking of her experience in the kitchen, Liz says: “I'm not a fancy cook, I'm a basic cook who absolutely hates waste of any kind Every part of an ingredient can be used – I've even used banana peels to make bolognese!”

zerowastecooking, We are all playing our part by pushing towards sustainability through

She continues, stressing the importance of being climate-considerate when in the kitchen: “There are lots of reasons to think about zero waste when cooking. We can only grow so much on our planet –if it has been grown then we should use it to make something delicious.

“Wasting food also means wasting money, why waste money when you can turn it into something that we can eat?”

One breakfast staple that is often wasted or thought to have no further use is porridge However, in the final part of the class, Sean challenged the cooks to bake ‘leftover porridge’ pancakes

This rightly attracted confused remarks and comments amongst the group, however the doubtful thoughts soon vanished as they mixed, flipped and cooked a lovely batch of fresh pancakes, topped with fresh fruit, syrup and homemade berry compote

Stacks of porridge pancakes were made, topped with fresh fruit, syrup and homemade berry compote.

Sitting down with the cooks as they eat their wellearned, zero waste lunch, Martin confesses: “Making a pot of porridge go as far as it can beyond just breakfast, which is what I'm guilty of viewing it as, is a great way to contribute to zero waste cooking.

“By doing so, this helps alleviate food waste in many ways whilst also making us become a bit more climate friendly in our actions.”

As part of his role at CFINE, Martin coordinates Granite City Good Food and works with organisations and communities in Aberdeen to advocate a sustainable and fair food system.

“It's about everything we have seen here today at the cooking session,” says Martin, “where food is accessible, healthy, affordable and good for the climate and the local economy

“We are all playing our part by pushing towards sustainability through zero waste cooking, which is so important ”

There’s a sense of achievement amongst the group of cooks as the day comes to an end Mother and son duo Karen and Frazer are returnees after attending last years’ cooking event at CFINE

s a boost in confidence with ticipant, Sadique, says: “It onment to cook alongside

ning confidence and building their self-esteem whilst cooking Being around people motivates me so I really enjoyed my time today

“It has also been very useful to learn from Sean and Liz how to use usually unwanted ingredients, I will definitely be more mindful about wasting food when cooking after today ”

Liz shares her thoughts on seeing the confidence grow in participants like Sadique: “I love being in the kitchen, cooking and seeing what people can do and come up with. People are so pleased when they have made something to be proud of. It gives them the confidence when they have achieved something as simple as making a soup or pancakes.

“Some of the participants today weren't initially confident about cooking. After showing them what to do and offering a hand if they need, they did a great job. Giving people the confidence and seeing how proud they are of what they have achieved is such a rewarding feeling.”

“It's been really eye-opening to learn how to use things that you didn't think you could use and usually throw away,” says Frazer.

“Such as making too much porridge and what you can do with the leftovers, or when you have got leftover peelings from tatties and what to do with them instead of wasting them.

“Today has definitely inspired me to go home and actually think about the ingredients I am using and whether they can be re-purposed, rather than just going in the bin ”

“I do a wee bit of cooking at home but I am now inspired to do more,” Karen says

“I often make soup but not like how we have made it today where we just bung everything in and hope for the best I will definitely try it the way I have learned today because it was delicious!

“It has been a great experience and it was brilliant to see our cooking not waste anything It just shows you what you can do with the extra peelings or food scraps, and it makes you think about what you are normally throwing away.”

Today has definitely inspired me to go home and actually think about the ingredients I am using and whether they can be
re-purposed,

“Our Zero Waste Cooking Day event very much fits into the ethos of CFINE and what we are doing around the city in Aberdeen,” says Martin

“There has been something new to learn for everyone in the session, making everyone think about potential ways to be more sustainable and to prevent food waste

“Participants have been able to pick up something new that they're going to continue when they go home to cook and also share with their friends and family ”

“This ripple effect is why I share my knowledge,” Sean adds.

Martin Carle (right) recommending spices to participants.
26 ACVO News April 2024

“I want participants to share it on too I want other people to be making things that I have learned and now know how to make ”

“It’s been a great opportunity for everyone to think about food waste in a different way, and about the food that we might have otherwise thrown out,” Martin continues

“It has been a really wonderful session today I am optimistic that we have inspired people to actively address food waste, empowering them in their actions to become a bit more sustainable when cooking delicious food ”

Transforming lives with the Alcohol & Drugs Action Garden Project: Meet the volunteers cultivating hope in the heart of Aberdeen.

Nestled in Aberdeen’s Grove Nursery lies the Alcohol & Drugs Action Garden Project; a sanctuary where seeds are sown, connections are made, and lives are transformed.

Every Wednesday throughout the year, a diverse group of volunteers, each with their own story and motivation, come together to tend to the garden while developing meaningful and supportive social connections.

Judith – Cultivating Growth and Community

As well as being a Sessional Worker with ADA, Judith gives her time as a volunteer at the garden. Her journey began eight years ago when Judith, at the time working as a self employed gardener, was approached by a friend who mentioned that ADA were in the process of establishing a community garden and were looking for some advice on how to get it going Little did she know that this initial step would lead her down a path of personal fulfilment

"I just enjoyed meeting the guys, just doing something different, meeting people that I wouldn't normally meet," she reflects For Judith, the garden is more than just a place to grow fruits and vegetables; it's a space where hope can take root and relationships can flourish

"There’s kind of two sides to the garden and our motivations behind it" Judith explains "On the one hand, there's growing something from scratch from seed, it's quite a hopeful thing to do It's difficult to know what's

ACVO News 28 April 2024

going to be successful with gardening sometimes but I think that’s part of the appeal – there’s that element of personal growth that comes with learning and first hand experience of trial and error when growing plants "

Beyond the horticultural aspect, Judith emphasises the social dimension of the garden, highlighting its role in combating loneliness and fostering connections among individuals in recovery. "Helping people in their recovery, and being part of that process is a big part of the appeal of volunteering for me. You can really see the growth and positive difference it makes to peoples lives" she shares.

"Also, you just meet a lot of really nice people, good people, great characters and have a lot of fun "

Reflecting on her experience, Judith affirms, "It's been one of the best things I've ever done. I've met a lot of really good people, made a lot of really good friends, had a lot of experiences that I wouldn't have had otherwise." For her, the garden is not just a place; it's a testament to the transformative power of community and connection. But sustaining the garden requires more than just soil and seeds; it demands dedicated volunteers like Judith who bring commitment, reliability, and enthusiasm to the project

Neil – Taking Root with New Beginnings

Neil's journey to the ADA garden began with a simple referral from his support worker, Adele, and an invitation to discover the benefits volunteering can offer “Adele, she knew I liked gardening and suggested that I come along and give it ago” he reflects “If I’m honest it was to save me from sitting around all day but now I’ve started to come along I think it’s magic I’ve not missed a week since”

For Neil, the garden is a source of stability in the face of personal transition. "It gets me up and out of my bed in the morning," he shares. "I’m going through a bit of a challenging time at the minute and this has really helped me; it’s given me a focus and a bit of a routine”.

“My dad had two allotment plots in Tullos when I was young We grew all our vegetables there so it’s something I learned about from an early age and have always enjoyed doing I’ve met a lot of lovely people here too, having the chance to get to know them all has been great for me ”

Reflecting on the transformative power of gardening, Neil emphasises its universal appeal. "The reason I like gardening? It's life itself, isn't it?" he muses. “You put a little wee tiny seed in and then five months later, you're eating something off of it. It's pretty amazing isn't it really?”

ACVO News 29 April 2024

Carol – Nurturing Growth, One Seed at a Time

Carol recently joined the Recovery Garden as a volunteer after retiring from her job of 17 years as an Outreach Worker at ADA Her motivation for volunteering came from the want to maintain connections with others within the community.

"I really miss helping other people," she admits. "It's also a way of having company on a Wednesday morning and getting to chat, as well as having the chance to get out the house and stay active ”

Echoing Judith's sentiments, Carol underscores the value of gardening with regard to mental wellbeing, describing it as a grounding experience that offers respite from the monotony of daily routines "I find gardening is a therapeutic thing," she reflects "You often forget what day it is when you're not working, it gives you a purpose, a reason to get out the house and to keep fit."

But beyond the personal benefits, Carol recognises the garden's wider impact on the community. "It's nice that there is this green space that people can come to and have a sense of ownership over while doing something for the community at the same time ”

Terry – Planting Seeds of Change

By this September, Terry can boast being nine-year veteran of the ADA garden For, him volunteering is not just about tending to plants; it's about being part of a community "I like being up here and working with other folk," he reflects "But at the same time, if you want to take some time to yourself you are left just to get on with it There’s no pressure here, you can do what you are in the mood for doing, everyone pitches in and does their bit

"It was one of my chums who said to me first of all that I should come along and give it a go, and I’ve never looked back" he recalls. For Terry, the garden represents a second chance. "It's good to give something back," he affirms. "I've done a lot of wrong things in my life but I appreciate the opportunity to contribute to the community with my volunteering”.

Terry’s job for the day is planting potatoes for harvest later in the year "In about three months, they start flowering at the top, and that's when they are ready," he explains

“Getting to eat what you have grown is one of the bonuses of volunteering here although in summer you can get a bit fed up of eating strawberries all the time but I suppose it’s nae a bad problem to have!”

ACVO News 30 April 2024
“The reason I like gardening? It's life itself, isn't it? You put a wee tiny seed in and then five months later, you're eating something off of it. It's pretty amazing really.”

With their dedication, commitment, and compassion, volunteers like Judith, Carol, Neil, and Terry are sowing the seeds of change, one plant at a time. As the garden blossoms and thrives, so too do the spirits of those who tend to it every Wednesday at their volunteering sessions.

"We are always on the lookout for volunteers and need people who are quite down to earth and approachable," Judith notes, emphasising the importance of creating a welcoming environment at the garden. In return, volunteers are offered not only the chance to hone their gardening skills but also opportunities for personal development through training programs and community engagement initiatives

PVG-ProtectionofVulnerableGroupsSchemeProposedChangestoFeesConsultation

Disclosure Scotland are seeking views to enable them to consider fee discounts for certain

groups applying for Protection of Vulnerable Groups (PVG) scheme membership and also views on the fees applied to organisations acting as accredited bodies

Along with local voluntary groups, our third sector interface colleagues, Volunteer Scotland and many others ACVO are concerned and very disappointed by the proposal as part of this to possibly remove the current Protection of Vulnerable Groups Scheme membership fee waiver for volunteers/move to a ‘fee discount structure for volunteers’ instead.

Alan Stevenson, CEO of Volunteer Scotland said: “We are very disappointed that Disclosure Scotland are considering removing the fee waiver for volunteers who require PVG membership for their roles “Volunteers give their time to provide

essential support to some of the most vulnerable people in Scottish society. Given the significant demand for such services, we urge Disclosure Scotland to reconsider or the Scottish Government to intervene.”

Mike Melvin, Volunteering Services Manager at ACVO added: “Disclosure Scotland state that ‘no decision has been made on this proposal and retaining the fee waiver continues to be an active option’

“We therefore have a good opportunity to make our views known and ensure that this misguided proposal, which would have many implications for volunteers/volunteer involving organisations, people and our communities, does not go ahead ”

ACVO, along with our third sector interface colleagues, will be formally responding to the consultation and have arranged a special ACVO/AVA online briefing to discuss this and other changes to the Protection of Vulnerable Groups and Disclosure

schemes – please find link for details: ACVO & AVA: Changes to Disclosures and Protection of Vulnerable Groups Scheme

We will keep you updated and please feel welcome to email any views you have regarding the consultation to Mike.Melvin@acvo.org.uk or alasdair.ross@avashire.org.uk and we will be happy to take them into account/include in our response

We further encourage organisations to likewise respond to the consultation as well if you wish at Disclosure Scotland fees: discounting, waivers and accredited bodies consultation and Disclosure (Scotland) Act 2020 - accredited body fees and proposals for discounting: PVG scheme consultation.

Aberdeen Science Centre has been awarded more than £37,000 in funding to install rooftop solar panels, which will see the centre benefit from improved energy efficiency and a reduction in its energy bills

A total of 48 solar panels, which have been donated to Aberdeen Science Centre, are set to be fitted to the centre’s roof shortly The donation was facilitated by global renewable energy producer Sonnedix

Responsible finance provider Social

The Baring Foundation Arts Programme - Mental health support for men

The Baring Foundation is an independent funder which promotes human rights and inclusion in all our work.

Since 2020, our arts programme has focused on offering creative opportunities to people living with mental health problems Since then, it has become our view that it is likely men are less engaged in participatory arts activities.

Grants of £20k to £50k are available for either of the following approaches, or a combination of the two: Work which finds ways to achieve equal representation (or a significant increase) of men in mixed gender creative activities; Men-only creative activities

We are looking for projects which provide new and attractive creative opportunities for men who are not already taking part, and target those men who are least likely otherwise to take part.

Projects should take place over at least one year, and preferably two or more years. To be eligible, you must: be an established arts organisation of any kind (including museums) operating in the UK; have delivered creative opportunities to people with mental health problems for at least two years; have had an annual income of over £75,000 for the last two years

Silver City Surfers Volunteers

Could you support an older person struggling online?

Aberdeen charity Silver City Surfers are looking for additional volunteers as they work to support more and more older people who are being left behind.

Silver City Surfers Find

A recent study by the charity Age UK warns “legions of older people are not able to do ordinary things like book a medical appointment, organise a blue badge for their car, or pay to park it” due to the “rush” to move services online

Silver City Surfers Coordinator Nelly Jaka comments further- “About 50% of our learners come to us for help because they are unable to access essential services such as GP appointments, paying utility bills, and getting access to benefit payments The alarming speed of moving services online is excluding older people and leaving them in a vulnerable position”

Learner Graeme Findlay who recently attended one of the charity’s drop-in sessions says “You are very disadvantaged now if you can’t use a laptop or other device”
