he only way to have missed the spa revolution of the past 10 years would be if you’ve lived on another planet. Spas are the biggest growth sector of the health and beauty business and increasingly, of the travel industry. Where once white-clad beauticians plied their trade in clinical treatment rooms, now, oriental pyjama-wearing therapists operate from interior designed suites featuring tropical showers, natural wood floors and mood lighting. Back then, the most cosmopolitan treatment available was a Swedish massage; now clients can travel the world from the comfort of their treatment couch and experience the beauty and health practices of foreign cultures, from India’s Ayurveda to California’s Hot Stones. Beauty treatments that used to be for the privileged few are now part of our lifestyles. Westerners are beginning to realize that if they don’t slow down and smell the roses, there is a greater risk of serious health problems. What today’s client wants is as many hours as possible of being pampered in a relaxing environment even when they are on holiday. We are providing these treatments in Malta too. Don’t miss my interview with Tanya Bugeja which starts on page 4. She is running The Aqua Marine Spa and Fitness at the recently opened Seabank Resort & Spa in Mellieha. In his article Bridging the Gender Divide which starts on page 16 the popular family therapist, Dr Charlie Azzopardi writes that local research has been consistently showing us how fast the Maltese are shifting from the traditional to the post-traditional whereby gender roles become more neutral and where the distinction between women and men will no longer depend on the work they do or do not do. Times are indeed achanging and we have little choice but to change with them.

Tiffany Pisani is now a big name in fashion. She is our cover girl in this issue. We also feature an interview with her on pages 18 & 19. For a success story to encourage us all read the interview starting on page 26 with accountant Brian Tonna, who over the years, has quietly expanded his business moving from being a sole practitioner to becoming managing partner of what is now Nexia BT, a three partner audit firm employing over 45 employees. Another interview to single out is that with Francesco Bizzocchi, the general manager of evagarden – a company started by his parents in 1979 and which, in spite of the enormous competition in the world of beauty and makeup has not only survived but continues to thrive and expand. He tells us something about himself and the universe in which he lives on pages 30 to 32. Our make-over girl in this issue is Michelle Muscat who did not fear changing her career and even less so her image. Read about her transformation which starts on page 40. In an article starting on page 54 Dr Vincent Cassar writes about Mental Resilience: having stamina, being bold and capable of taking very difficult decisions, of keeping consciously healthy during times that seem very challenging and difficult. This is an article to read and digest. That is not all. There is plenty more to read in this month’s issue. Take it everywhere with you. Simply slip it into your bag!

he v Spa and Fitness at the Seabank Resort & Spa in Mellieha, has been designed to satisfy as many of the five senses as possible. The treatment zone is away from the hustle and bustle of the hotel. The manager, Tania Bugeja originally wanted to be a physiotherapist but while waiting for the course to start, she succeeded in passing the Civil Service exams and joined Maltapost. She was also working part-time at Professional Health and Beauty Services doing accounts and marketing work and instead of becoming a physio she took a course in aromatherapy. This was the start of a number of courses she followed to more than qualify her for her new career in health and beauty. In 2004 Tania started her own business running what was then the Atrium Spa at the Seabank Hotel. “I had very little experience in spa work,”” says Tania, “but my motivation and enthusiasm mixed with the experiences I had had – office work, accounts and marketing – were the right recipe to make the business work.” The Atrium Spa was refurbished and reopened in May this year and following a rebranding exercise it is now known as AquaMarine Spa and Fitness. Tania was very much involved in doing project managerial work to make this transformation possible. “What an experience that was,”” she says. “There I was geared up in a safety helmet and shoes, site plans in hand, giving directions to workers to make sure the spa opened as projected. This was definitely one of the most difficult projects I had ever undertaken!” Tania now manages the Spa for the hotel and her team consists of five therapists and a receptionist. “Our aim is to

make our clients feel good, to pamper them,”” she says with enthusiasm. “Of course, even when things get busy you still have to keep calm as you cannot destress a client and not be calm yourself – or at least appear to be so!”

The products contain trace elements, vitamins, proteins and minerals which strengthen the immune system,

The Hot and Cold stone treatments are also very popular as is the variety of facials, the manicures and pedicures. “Our sauna and steam room are also popular; our clients love escaping there for some peace and relaxation.”

The Thali(sens five treatment destination rituals – Orient, Asia, Polynesia, Amazon and Atlantic – are also offered at the AquaMarine Spa . “Each treatment is based on the luxurious ingredients and techniques imported from far away countries,” says Tania.

In spa design, it is important to create a sensual environment while making sure that everything works properly. These spas should be cultural retreats designed for our peace of mind; a place where we lose all sense of time and relax. “Here, everything is designed for your renewal in both mind and body,”” Tania explains. I want to know what she does in her spare time. “I’m very good at doing nothing! I enjoy reading but this has become a luxury. I mostly read crime stories and autobiographies. My working day starts at 9am and finishes at 9pm so really, there isn’t that much time to sit and read. Before you know it, the evening is over and time to be back here again!” She also enjoys travelling with her husband. “I prefer long trips and have been to Australia, Jamaica, Malaysia, Hawaii, United States… But we also try to fit in long weekends somewhere in Europe – for some retail therapy!”

These spas should be cultural retreats designed for our peace of mind; a place where we lose all sense of time and relax.

There are six tranquil treatment rooms at the AquaMarina Spa, one of which is designed for couples. “Here our mission is to ensure that everyone receives the mind, body and soul experience of a lifetime. The resort is all about relaxation and the days just drift by.”” It begins with the tranquility of the environment and the impact on all the senses as you enter the spa. Each room is deliciously fragrant, each treatment bitingly fresh. Tania has a genuine understanding of the products and treatments being used. “In our thalasso treatments

we use seawater based products from Brittany and both therapists and clients love them. Whether post-work or post sightseeing there are few places better equipped to help you destress and unwind,”” she says showing me round: “Both locals and tourists, come here to recharge their batteries and assault their cellulite over a long weekend. How many of us who work or have a family to look after or both can have all that Me-Me-Me time stretching before us?”” Tania comments. This is a place where you can totally abdicate your responsibilities for a short time at least. “And nothing is more

rewarding then when a client is genuinely happy with the treatments and says ‘Thank you’ and mean it,”” is Tania’s parting shot. z

With its chiffons and tulle’s Carolina Herrera 2012 - 2013 Resort Collection gives the impression that summer is endless. “Resort, for me, is colour, fun, a new silhouette... ” Herrera said. “It should be about making getting dressed simple.”” Herrera’s collection

ticked all three boxes. The colour was straightforwardly pretty – chartreuse, dusky blue, cayenne red, and a slate gray that radiated a warm sensuousness despite its relative sobriety because of the addition of gleaming copper beading. The fun came in the form of her adorable prints. And as for that new silhouette, Herrera had that too, a fluttery, longer line that used to be called tea-length, which looked fresh and new and absolutely right, simply because its point was to be nothing more than effortless and charming to wear. A most wearable collection.

say goodbye to chilblains by mary vella

s ay g o o d b y e t o

CHILBLAINS

C

hilblains are small, red, sore, itchy bumps on the fingers and toes. The cause could be some or all of the following: poor circulation, lack of minerals and vitamins, unbalanced diet, anaemia, smoking, excessive alcohol intake, diabetes, connective tissue disorders, hormonal changes or a history of chilblains in the family and therefore a predisposition for them. Rubbing the fingers and feet to warm them up, soaking them in very hot water or putting them very close to a heater will make them worse as the circulation increases fast, the capillaries rapture, hence the itching, redness, puffiness and blisters. GEHWOL FUSSKRAFT WARMING FOOT BATH contains herbal extracts that warm the feet and increase circulation. Put 10mls in warm water and put in your fingers or toes to soak for 15 minutes.

10

zip beauty magazine issue 06

Dry the feet well and then apply GEHWOL FUSSKRAFT RED WARMING CREAM.

By taking regular exercise, consuming an adequate amount of minerals and vitamins and drinking plenty of water you will aid circulation and increase your body temperature. Thermal socks and gloves also help to keep fingers and toes warm.

shea butter. This cream helps to reinforce the skin’s defences and prepare them for the cold weather ahead. It prevents them from cracking and blistering. A blend of essential oils of black pepper,r cloves, ginger,r rosemaryy and red thyme are mixed with the aromatherapy base cream. This cream encourages circulation, and should be massaged daily to the arms and fingers in the morning and before going to sleep. To prevent chilblains, this cream has to be massaged in autumn as the circulation improves slowly, so when the cold winter days are with us and the temperature goes down, the circulation will be working well and thus chilblains will be prevented. This blend can also be applied on the abdomen twice daily to increase the general circulation all over the body as those who suffer from chilblains usually feel the cold a great deal.

To heal chilblains An aromatherapy base cream with Shea butter, Comfrey, Hypericum and Calendula mixed with a blend of essential oils of Lavender, Frankincense, Lemon and Myrrh, applied at least 3 times daily will help to heal the cracked, blistered itching skin. Start your preventive treatment right away and enjoy a chilblain free winter! z

bridging the gender divide by dr charlie azzopardi

b r i d gi ng the e

dr charlie azzopardi systemic family therapist

ggender divide

dr charlie azzopardi is a systemic family therapist. he obtained his master’s degree in family therapy from the institute of psychiatry in london, and his doctorate in systemic psychotherapy from the university of east london in conjunction with the tavistock clinic. he works privately in his own clinic meeting families and individuals with various difficulties. in this article he points out that as the traditional roles of men and women are gradually overlapping men, too, need as much support as women to change into more androgynous beings.

G

ender stereotypes are often linked with traditional conceptualizations of family structure whereby manhood is conceived of as the provision of financial and structural security for the family and womanhood as the provision of care and other emotional resources. Such an arrangement is one with which many of us are familiar. Many are those who feel somehow threatened at the thought of a different kind of family arrangement. We still hear strong echoes stating that the children need their mother more than their father and that women’s place is at home. Nonetheless the scene is changing. In spite of the ideal worlds in people’s imagination, reality calls for women to leave home and go to work and for men to roll up their sleeves and lend a hand in domestic affairs. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with that, is there? Some people believe that this has brought a shift in values whereby women wear the trousers and men the skirt. It is understandable that this may create some anxiety especially in those women who never worked outside their homes in their lives and for men who gained their pride from providing all the material needs necessary.

14

zip beauty magazine issue 06

It is amazing how often I still hear the sentence ‘the good values are gone’. No, I don’t think so. Values can only shift and change as they are definitely doing. But values have long been changing and as always, humans expect that things only change in their favour. But the course the changes take is guided by much more than ourselves. We kind of set the changes rolling and they obviously roll and snowball all the way down until our little creation gains a life of its own and persecutes us.

We still hear strong echoes stating that the children need their mother more than their father and that women’s place is at home.

The Maltese are going through changes and we should all stand up in chorus to sing Ozzy’s famous old hit. Local research has been consistently showing us how fast the Maltese are shifting from the traditional to the post-traditional whereby

gender roles become more neutral and where the distinction between women and men would surely not depend on the work they do or not do. The late Dr Anthony Abela, to whom we remain grateful for his research on values and family life, showed and explained this shift way back in 2000. Fr Charles Tabone had detected such changes as early as 1987 as expressed in his book The Secularization of the Family in Changing Malta. So, what is changing? A summary of all the changing trends can be summed up in the term Androgyny. With its Greek origins, androgyny is coined from two terms, Andro (man) and gyne (women). It refers to a person who internalises both male and female gender characteristics and overcomes the prevalent

Jung determined that the psyche (mind) contained a masculine component and a feminine component, which he called the animus and anima, respectively. For men, the animus was closely aligned with the outer personality, the persona, whereas the anima was more closely aligned with the hidden portion of the personality, the shadow. Thus, by intention or happenstance, the typical man placed a barrier between his anima and his persona. Better-integrated personalities, however, allowed expression of the anima. According to Jung, similar but inverse dynamics occur among women. For women, the anima was aligned with the persona, and the animus with the shadow. The typical woman prevented expression

cultural dualist idea of separated and dialectical gender identities. Bem originally formulated the idea of psychological androgyny in 1974 and 1975 and, subsequently, argued that androgynous persons (those who have instrumental masculine traits and nurturant feminine traits) have social and psychological advantages compared to sex-typed individuals. This is reminiscent of Jung’s idea of the animus and the anima which he espoused in 1959 and 1960 as part of his theory of personality.

16

of the animus, although better-integrated personalities allowed its expression. The critical concept here is that masculinity and femininity were not regarded as opposites but as coexistent structures. Now, the cultural changes the western world is currently going through call for a shift towards greater androgyny. Women are being called to embrace traits traditionally associated with men, and men are being called to embrace traits

bridging the gender divide by dr charlie azzopardi

traditionally associated with women. In practical terms women are being culturally pushed to go out of their homes and work, which is a man’s duty in traditional terms, to appear strong, and so on. Men are being pushed to take on traditional feminine roles such as taking care of the children, domestic work, and expressing emotions. One cannot fail to appreciate the social and cultural underpinnings of such a call, with its multitudes of implications. Until now it was made to appear as if women are fighting a just ‘battle’ against men’s evil

It is definite that men, like women, need to let go of traditional roles and embrace an increasing androgynous stance. Yet, they need encouragement to both let go of the old and embrace the new. They need security as the ground of tradition below their feet tremors. They need reassurance that everything is going to be fine if they let go of the tradition that suffocated their emotional intelligence, their sensitivity, and their ability to express their emotions.

So while women started and advanced in the process of change, men were left stranded, unsupported, and simultaneously challenged, thus creating an antagonist force and creating more resistance.

dominant masculinity: a battle of liberation which will lead to gender equality, with women becoming as powerful as men and so on. All the political support went for such a cause, which in itself is just and fair. Yet, because of this warring stance men were portrayed as evil, insensitive, and incapable of understanding themselves and their female counterparts. This helped alienate men from the scene without considering that men need support to change into more androgynous beings. So while women started and advanced in the process of change, men were left stranded, unsupported, and simultaneously challenged, thus creating an antagonist force and creating more resistance.

Becoming more androgynous has been found to be very beneficial for individuals, and relationships appear to gain strength too. z

in the

Nexte Issu

In the next issue I would like to suggest some ideas about how to strengthen one’s androgynous stance and how one can combine the various components of masculinity and femininity within. Meanwhile, if you have ideas, comments, and useful suggestions in this regard please do voice them through email.

FULL STEAM AHEAD What did our Tiffany Pisani do next Marie Benoît asks? Set up her own brand of swimwear of course.

W

e’ve all heard of Tiffany Pisani and seen photos of this attractive, young 20-year-old who has an older sister and a British mother. We loved her on the Kinnie billboards, too. What brought her so much popularity was winning Britain’s Next Top Model in October 2010. Her hometown is Attard but she is at present renting a flat in Notting Hill. And moreover, there is much coming and going to London and a pied-à-terre there is a must. Will you go to University I ask this very pretty girl? “Maybe,” is her non-committal reply. She has been signed up by Models 1 International which is a huge step and she has already modelled for Olivia Rubin, Richard Sorger and Eliot at London Fashion Week. In London, too, she worked for Nivea, Asos, Harvey Nichols, Schwazkopf and various magazines such as Vogue Italia, Grazia, Cosmopolitan and Fashions Editorials. In Paris she spent her stay there working for the Russian designer, Dilshenko, and rushing to other castings during breaks. At the Haute Couture

18

zip beauty magazine issue 06

Fashion week she walked for Fabien Rozan, Frank Sorbei and Jean Paul Knott. “I shall have to go again and look at some of the sights,”” she chirps. Her enthusiasm is infectious. She has also been very busy preparing for the next British Hair Awards in September. As if that were not enough she has also been working in Milan and Hong Kong where she modelled for Kookai, Chopard, Gucci and Harper’s Bazaar. Tiffany is doing what she has always dreamed of doing which is working as a professional model ‘near the top of the industry’. “There is the excitement of attending castings, travelling around London to get to them, making a good impression. You have to handle yourself properly, work extra hard and arrive on time. So much going on!”” she says a little breathlessly. There is a positive energy that rolls off her. Sometimes she is chosen, sometimes not. It’s all in the game. “I love seeing my work on screen, on a billboard or a magazine. My dream is coming true. It is what I have always wanted to do. Model.”

full steam ahead by marie bonoît

As if that were not enough she has also been working in Milan and Hong Kong where she modelled for Kookai, Chopard, Gucci and Harper’s Bazaar. This summer Tiffany launched her own swimwear collection. Britain’s Next Top Model are also supporting her to launch in several other countries. Tiffany decided to launch in Malta, her home country. “I wanted to show the world how beautiful the Maltese islands are. I felt too, that it makes an excellent backdrop for my swimwear.” Since she has already worked for several prestigious companies and designers on and off the catwalk, this has given her an insight into the fashion industry and fashion trends. Her swimwear collection is a luxury brand. The silhouettes are designed to be timeless yet contemporary. “I hope they will make women feel confident and comfortable. The collection includes flattering briefs, halter neck tops, twisted bandeaux adorned with buckles, beading and vibrant prints. The collection is inspired by that beautiful country, Brazil, which is renowned for its quality swimwear.” This is Tiffany’s debut into fashion design. She is collaborating with an experienced team. Is she

going to stick to just designing swimwear or is she planning to go on to designing clothes and accessories too? “I have many plans for the future,”” she says, quite matter of factly – and I can well believe it. What are her favourite colours? “I like blue, black and white.”” Traditional colours I say to myself. She has already achieved so much. Where would she like to go from here? “I have many dreams and goals in life. I am focusing on my modelling career and swimwear at the moment. They are more than enough to cope with I promise!”” How does she see herself in ten years time; single, married, in Malta, working abroad? “I honestly don’t know,”” she remarks. z

identifying hazards in beauty parlours by john schembri

identifying h aza r ds

in beauty rs parlou john schembri is managing director of shield consultants. he holds a master of science in security and risk management from the university of leicester and a post graduate certificate in occupational health and safety from portsmouth university. he is currently reading for a second msc in safety and the environment. here he takes a closer look at the process of identifying hazards, determining risk and taking the necessary action to reduce and control risks in beauty salons.

I

n this series we have been looking at health and safety within the beauty industry, with particular attention paid to beauty salons and parlours. In this issue, we shall have a closer look at the process of identifying hazards, determining risk and taking the necessary action to reduce and control the risk. This is a legal requirement and I need to remind readers that failure to do so may result in legal sanction being taken against the employer, including summary fines as contemplated by L.N. 36/2012, which we shall discuss in a later issue. To identify hazards, or dangers, at any workplace does not necessarily have to be a complicated process. It helps when we use our imagination, utilise our good knowledge of the work itself and of course adopt a sensible method for writing down the dangers in a simple, rational classification. The law states that the process needs to satisfy three criteria, namely: that it needs to be suitable, sufficient and systematic. I find it easy to remind myself of the three S'es.

24

zip beauty magazine issue 06

john schembri managing diretor of shield consultants

‘Suitable’ means, in this context, that the process should be fit for its purpose. ‘Sufficient’ means that it must cover all hazards, within reason, while ‘systematic’ means that the method of collecting information and analysing it must be coherent and make sense. In my company we use a simple classification system for identifying hazards, based on possible sources or causes. These are: People; Work Processes; Machinery (including tools); the Work Environment and Dangerous Substances.

The range of personal injury could run from minor to very severe, so a well kitted out first aid box and a trained first aider in the salon are very essential in a modern practice.

identifying hazards in beauty parlours by john schembri

So, by just considering these criteria, some fairly commonplace hazards in beauty salons and parlours might include: People – hygiene must be of a high standard; people may be carrying sickness or personal conditions that are contagious; there may be some risk of violence, admittedly rare, but possible nonetheless; the competence and technical ability of salon workers must be taken into account, including from a safety perspective. Where young workers and

Dangerous substances in beauty work could be many and varied. Basically the employer must take into account all the requirements for managing safely it's inventory of chemicals, in all it's forms. Apart from risk of personal injury and harm, with potential legal liabilities, chemicals also frequently cause severe fire risk, and this topic is very serious. Today we have tried to give you a simple overview of safety hazards at the workplace in a beauty context. Why don't you try doing a similar exercise at your workplace? My late father, Renald, was one of the club’s most respected officials.”” What is more, Mr Tonna is a keen fisherman. He loves wearing an old tracksuit and going fishing for lampuki a skill he acquired from his parents who used to take him fishing in Kalkara all those years ago. So should you spot him on a summer’s day, on

the rocks, smelling of bad shrimps you will now know that he is one of Malta’s most successful accountants and the managing partner of Nexia BT. “Yes,”” he says, his thoughts not on lampuki but on his expanding business, “we believe in giving a value added service to our clients. We like to provide them with a personalized service of the highest order.” And he means it too. Hence the rise and rise of this 20-year-old firm. z

F

rancesco Bizzocchi’s parents founded EVGARDEN in 1979, when he was just three-years-old. “I’m an only child and I have lived in this ambience for all these years,”” he acknowledges with a quick smile. “In fact, I have grown with the company and I have been totally immersed in everything related to beauty, to business and especially to evagarden. Today I consider our company like the little sister I never had. It has to be constantly fed new ideas and given new directions so that it will grow in the best possible way.”

Besides a degree in business administration and different experiences abroad, Francesco has gained valuable knowledge and know-how within the evagarden universe. This has embraced all aspects of the business: from packing which he did as a summer job when he was a teenager to assisting

the department manager in the warehouse and logistics area. He also spent time in the administrative department as well as in the management control and contracts departments. He comments: “In the marketing area, I followed the product, branding and communications development; in the sales area we worked hard on those foreign countries who were interested in our products.”

“I am a big fan of Blues, Jazz and Rock. I have also been a member from 1996 to 2010, of a rock band called WIP or Work in Progress.

From January this year Francesco assumed the role of General Manager. He had this to say: “Together with my team I have been replanning the entire company to make certain that we can face up to future challenges in a market which is in constant evolution. Our goal is to make evagarden a worldwide leading company in the field of beauty. We not only have to keep up with trends but to be proactive in this business. All this within the original parameters we have set for the company: passion, quality, personality and research.” Does he find the time for other interests apart from developing evagarden and making it known worldwide? “There is always time to do what one loves,”” Francesco says with assurance. “I am a big fan of Blues, Jazz and Rock. I have also been a member from 1996 to 2010, of a rock band called WIP or Work in Progress. I enjoyed my role

as their lead vocalist during those years tremendously. In addition to composing our own songs we were considered to be one of the best bands in central Italy which specialized in Led Zeppelin covers.” But his real passion? “U2 which I began to follow live during the Zoo TV tour of 1993.” So, back to beauty trends and evagarden. “The priority of the company has always been the

satisfaction of the consumer. To keep our promises to our faithful clientele we have always focused on quality but also with an eye on the world of fashion. impeccable and summery look for the beach too. And of course it is waterproof as well. An added bonus!” Finally, what about some tips from the expert who breathes make-up every day? “Paradoxically,”” says Francesco, “the most difficult thing to explain to people is what make-up means. I can no longer count the times I have heard protests such as: ‘Oh! No! No! No!… I do not use make-up. I only wear a little foundation, mascara and lip gloss.’ When I get the chance I tell them that make-up is just that. We are not

talking about the heavy make-up used on the catwalk which is absolutely necessary because of all the lighting and so on. Nor about the make-up many brides use on their special day which again is necessary because of all the photography. I believe that with some advice from one of our experts, which are present in Malta too, for they are wherever evagarden is found, together with our high quality products, every single woman can enhance her looks and understand how to use more products properly. The most important thing about make-up is to have fun and not to be afraid to dare. Try and play with it. Experiment! You will be surprised at the results!” z

fish - tasty & healthy by michael diacono

h s ďŹ tasty & healthy

chef-patron michael diacono sings the praises of fish and gives us one of the recipes he prepares for his patrons at giuseppi’s in mellieha.

W

e might live on a small island, with all the problems that come with this, but being smack in the middle of the Mediterranean sea does have some advantages. We can mention the sybaritic breeze in summer, several interesting small rocky coves to discover and also some of the freshest fish in the whole Med. The inclusion of fish in our diet should be as natural to us as eating rice is to the Chinese. I find it a pity that so many people either shun fish or only eat it in restaurants. The excuse is usually that cooking fish is a chore or that fish has too many bones. Both excuses are non starters. The quickest and easiest meals can be prepared with fish, as cooking times are very short and most recipes are simple and straightforward. As for the bones,

36

zip beauty magazine issue 06

asking your fishmonger to fillet your fish solves that problem, whilst some fish, such as monkfish, skate and dogfish do not have any small bones. We must not forget the nutritional value of fish which is generally a great source of protein, low in calories and cholesterol and high in vitamin B and calcium. Oily fish also provides essential omega 3 fatty acids which our bodies do not manufacture and must therefore be introduced into our diets. Oily fish, like sardines and mackerel are also a good source of vitamins A and D. Most fish do not contain saturated fats and is ideal for a low calorie diet. The way we cook fish dictates the amount of calories we consume. Simply grilling or baking a fish

fish - tasty & healthy by michael diacono

fish recipe

Stuffed SARDINES Ingredients

serves 4 persons

800g filleted fresh sardines 100g raisins, softened in warm water 100g pine nuts 80g green olives

80g fresh bread, crust removed

2 garlic cloves

Salt and pepper

80g Pecorino, grated Extra virgin olive oil Red wine vinegar

50g capers

Method with some lemon and herbs does not increase the calorie intake, and more importantly, does not alter the taste of the fish. Another reason why fish is not as popular as it should be is the price. It is true that some fish is very expensive especially the luxury type sold in restaurants such as red snapper, dentex, silver bream and the likes. By using lesser known fish like sardines, barracuda, skate or even parrot fish we can easily enjoy fish which is reasonably priced while at the same time helping to make fishing more sustainable. Some species like tuna, swordfish and grouper are already on the danger list because of overfishing. I wish you a great season full of fresh goodies. A presto. z

Place the sardines in a large dish and soak in vinegar for 10 minutes. Drain and dry the fillets. Sprinkle the bread with some vinegar and squeeze thoroughly . Combine with olive oil, Pecorino, the drained raisins, pine nuts, sliced olives, the capers and chopped garlic. Season well. Place half the sardines flat on a baking tray and fill with the stuffing. Place another fillet on top like a sandwich. Drizzle with a little olive oil and bake in a hot oven at 180 C / mark 6 for 15 minutes max. Serve hot or at room temperature.

let’s give a cheer or two for michelle muscat’s makeover with evagarden makeup and united colors of benetton clothes.

M

editerranean women generally have an attractive combination of olive skin and dark hair and eyes. The model for this make-over, Michelle Muscat, tends to keep her makeup simple. So makeup artist Claire Galea wanted to give her “an intense look inspired by the Neapolitan diva Sophia Lauren. I wanted the make-up to be daring and to give Michelle a sophisticated look,” says Claire.

As a last flourish Claire brushed Rosy Blusher on Michelle’s cheek bones and the final touch: lip pencil and lipstick in a natural/nude to balance the intensity of her eyes.

So, opening her Evagarden trousse, to start off with Claire used a lifting base to fill in open pores and fine wrinkles and to tighten the skin and even out Michelle’s skin tone. "This will not only give her a radiant look but will ensure that the make-up will last too."

Clothes

Since we are in autumn, Claire wanted to achieve a wintery, warm look. She explains: "For a smokey eye effect I applied Evagarden’s brown kajal pencil all over the eyelids, blended it well with my finger tips and set it with brown eye shadow (no 119). I highlighted the brow bone with champagne colour shimmery eyes shadow (no 230). For lash glamour I used Precious Mineral Mascara and darkened the eyebrows with eyebrow pencil."

Hair Charlene Camilleri of ‘Guys ‘n’ Dolls’, Qawra gave Michelle a simple blowdry for a fresh, easy-to-care-for look.

Michelle is wearing pieces from The United Colors of Benetton’s Autumn-Winter 2012-13 collection. This season the classic language of British tailoring and style has been re-invented by their designers through a careful use of colour and new materials and techniques. Our model is always in black or grey although she is essentially very bubbly. So for the makeover, although her first choice was an elegant classic black dress, for the second outfit she was persuaded to opt for colour: a purple pencil skirt and mustard top and coat. To add another bright spark to the outfit Michelle wore a scarf with a floral pattern for a truly new look.

Meet Michelle Muscat

The elder of two sisters, Michelle comes from a closely knit family. “I see my parents every day as they come to my restaurant every evening. My sister Danielle lives in New York. She is five years younger but is my best friend and I share all my thoughts and secrets with her.”” Their relationship is sustained through technology. “We communicate daily by internet or phone so we really are only seconds away from each other.” The love of Michelle’s life “my pride and joy, my pillar of strength”” is her 19-year-old son Zach who has completed his first year in Architecture at the University of Malta. “I have a very special bond with him and we enjoy spending time together as much as possible. Although both of us run an extremely tight schedule our favourite time is having dinner together at home on my day off. Then we spend the evening yapping away and going over the happenings of the week”. She goes on: “Zach is also a very active and keen footballer and plays for the national, ‘under 21’, football team. I’m very proud of him,” says Michelle.

the private sector. “That is, until three years ago when I decided to start my own business. My mother’s family owned several cafés and restaurants in Valletta so I was brought up in the world of catering. It’s in my blood. So, when I was deciding on a new chapter in my life – a new beginning as it were – I thought of running my own restaurant – La Vela in Pietá.”” This has become a passion for Michelle who loves meeting and hosting people and watching them enjoying their meals. Wining and dining to her have become a hobby and not just work. “Wine is my passion,”” says Michelle with enthusiasm. “I love learning about wine and obviously, drinking it too. It’s a way of life and I can think of a different wine for each dish or indeed, every mood!” Another of Michelle’s hobbies is music “especially Italian music, I’m addicted to it”” she says, eyes twinkling. Although she is thankful she has so many friends she insists that she has to have her ME time as well. “I also enjoy being alone and in my own company. But life is short and I am a great believer in the saying carpe diem. Yes, let’s sieze the day and profit from every minute whether in the company of friends or alone.” Travelling is another of her enthusiasms. “When I was younger I used to travel to Munich quite often, it is one of my favourite cities but in the past few years I have discovered some beautiful places in Italy.”” Apart from Italy and Germany she has been a keen traveller to Austria, Poland, Switzerland, England, Canada and America. She is enjoying the momentum her business has brought into her life but guess what, there are other ideas she would like to explore and she will not rest until she has. That’s Michelle for you. z

ease stress with aromatheraphy with christine courney

e a se str ess with

Aromatherapy christine courtney, principle of obus school of healing therapies, is a holistic therapist. she has been teaching holistic courses in malta for six years and will continue to do so at the biocare academy. she writes that aromatherapy is excellent for anyone who is feeling stressed as it fast-forwards you to a state of relaxation.

I

recently heard stress being compared to a violin string – too much tension and the string will snap, too little and it will not produce any music. However, just the right amount of tension produces vibrant energy and sweet music. Therein lies the difficulty in recognising stress in our lives. Add to this the fact that each individual is able to cope with different amounts of stress in life and different situations cause different levels of stress, how can we know when we are heading towards being stressed-out? The key to a happy and healthy life is knowing how stress affects you and taking action before it becomes a threat to your health.

46

zip beauty magazine issue 06

It is important to realise that the body reacts in the same way to fear and excitement. So you can become stressed if you work in a job you hate (fear) if you do not try to counter the effects of this emotional state. Likewise if you are in a goal orientated job and you are always working towards targets and living for the buzz this gives (excitement), but do not take time to relax, this too has an adverse effect on your body.

There are three stages to stress In the first stage, hormones in the form of adrenaline and corticosteroids are pumped into the bloodstream. The heart rate increases. The lungs take in more oxygen to fuel the muscles and the brain

in preparation for strenuous action or emotional strength. Digestion slows down and energy is released quickly from stored fats and sugars. The immune system shuts down.

- For sudden stress -

and recurrent infections such as sore throats and cold sores.

Put 3-4 drops of lavender oil on a tissue and inhale deeply

In the second stage the extra oxygen, energy, adrenaline and corticosteroids are brought into action to enable the body to cope with this stressful situation. If the stressful situation is resolved, the stress symptoms vanish and the body returns to normal. However, if the situation is prolonged or continues the body enters stage three.

Because stress effects almost every system of our body it can manifest in a huge variety of symptoms. Long term or prolonged stress can lead to insomnia, depression, high blood pressure, hair loss, skin problems, allergies, digestive disorders, menstrual problems and respiratory problems.

Aromatherapy is an excellent therapy for anyone who is feeling stressed as it helps the body to relax, it boosts the immune system and aids sleep. If you

1 Stress-related anxiety Lifestyle changes - It is important to take plenty of walks outdoors preferably in the daylight. This should be a relaxing walk. Take time to see your surroundings and enjoy the weather, even a walk in the rain can be very relaxing. > Consider taking up yoga or meditation. Diet changes -Watch your diet during this time as the fluctuating blood sugars caused by the stress could have you craving sweets and alcohol or tea and coffee, all of which are stimulants. Include oats in your diet as they contain thiamine and pantothenic acid, which act as a gentle nerve tonic. Aromatherapyy - Have regular aromatherapy baths, at least two a week. Make sure to burn oils, every day, in a vaporiser in the room you relax in.

Relaxing Bath 15mls of grapeseed oil, 2 drops of geranium, 2 drops of lavender, 2 drops of sandalwood& 1 drop of Ylang Ylang. Fill the bath and add the above mix just before you get in and relax for 10 minutes. Allow yourself to enjoy!

oils to burn in a vaporiser with water are: 2 drops of Lavender, 1 drop of Sandalwood and 2 drops of Bergamot.

Relaxing Bath Half a cup of Epson Salts Add: 3 drops Lavender oil, 3 drops Roman Chamomile oil & 1 drop Ylang Ylang. Fill the bath and add the above mix (agitate well to dissolve) just before you get in and relax for 10 minutes. other sleep aids

Add three drops of lavender to a tissue and inhale deeply then place the tissue under your pillow.

Regular aromatherapy massage with a qualified aromatherapist will be of great benefit. * Do not ignore prolonged insomnia, as it can sometimes be a sign of depression.

Tension Headaches Headaches, which result from overwork or stress, are very common. The symptoms usually include muscular tension in the neck and shoulders, or I have had people describe them to me as feeling like a tight band around their head. Lifestyle – Self-massage is an excellent remedy here. A simple 5-minute self-massage of the neck, shoulders and scalp can be wonderful. Aromatherapyy – rub in a mix of oils into your shoulders and neck.

Relaxing Message 2 Insomnia Stress and anxiety can lead to disturbed sleep. Lifestyle changes – Take regular exercise, preferably outdoors. Diet – Avoid stimulating drinks such as tea, coffee and cola late in the evening. Aromatherapyy – Have a relaxing bath every night before bedtime.

walking and your feet with ivan farrugia

wal k i ng and your

feet podiatrist ivan farrugia gives some advice on how to buy the proper shoes if you take your walking seriously

L

ast week I was walking on the Sliema front and noticed that most of those who were doing exercise were not wearing the ideal walking or running shoes. The ideal walking shoe should be stable from side to side, well-cushioned, and it should enable you to walk smoothly. Many running shoes fit all of these criteria well. But again are you sure you are walking in running shoes and not tennis shoes? Are you aware of the difference between walking shoes and normal shoes? It doesn’t matter whether it is walking shoes or running shoes unless you are aiming for a marathon; either type of shoe is acceptable if it works well with your foot mechanics, providing cushioning

52

zip beauty magazine issue 06

and stability. But it does matter when going for a long walk with tennis or normal shoes. Both are not adequate to give shock absorbing affect and stability. Shoes should always feel comfortable and fit well at the time of buying. Don't cut corners on your shoe budget; buying shoes is the only real expenditure necessary to start walking, so treat your feet well. Look for sport shops and ask for walking or running shoes. It is of utmost importance to visit the shoe store late in the afternoon, when your feet are slightly swollen. Wear the same socks to the store that you will wear while walking. Try on at least four or five pairs of shoes. Put on and lace up both shoes

walking and your feet with ivan farrugia

of each pair and walk around in them for a minute or two.

The ideal walking shoe should be stable from side to side, wellcushioned, and it should enable you to walk smoothly. You should be able to wiggle your toes in the shoe, and there should be one half to a full thumb's width between the end of the longest toe on your longer foot and the end of the shoe's toe box

Remember that every shoe manufacturer uses a different basic shoe shape, or "last." Some lasts are shorter or longer than others of the same size; some fit a wide foot perfectly, while others are cut for a slimmer foot. Before buying, check the shoe's quality with the vertical heel test. Place the shoe on the store's counter and make sure the heel is straight up when looking at it from the back. Is the midsole well-connected to the upper? Is the stitching complete? Check inside the shoe for any irregular bumps. This is of utmost importance mostly for those who suffer from Diabetes.

When the shoes are on your feet, the heel should be snug. If it slides in the store, it will slide while you are walking. You should be able to wiggle your toes in the shoe, and there should be one half to a full thumb's width between the end of the longest toe on your longer foot and the end of the shoe's toe box. Make sure your ankles don't roll in the shoes. Nowadays most running shoes have an anti-pronation or antisupination affect. Again, if you have bunions or other special considerations, consult your podiatrist about the best shoe for you. If you have prescription orthotics, substitute your orthotics for the existing one (most shoes have a removable insole) to make sure it will fit properly, if possible. z

mental resilience with dr vincent cassar

MENTAL

resilience dr vincent cassar is an organisational psychologist chartered with the british psychological society. he is a senior associate with delegate management services and an honorary teaching fellow at birkbeck college, university of london, where he teaches work and well-being. dr cassar is a founding member and current president of the malta association of work and organisational psychology. in this article he comments on that essential quality: resilience

“Being resilient” or “having stamina” is akin to being bold, courageous, capable of taking very difficult decisions, withstanding extreme forms of pressure and possessing the energy to move forward in spite of the challenges and constraints one may face. Resilience is indeed an important topic and has important implications in several domains including at work and the workplace. But further from the colloquial usage of the term “resilience”, what is it exactly and what effects does it have on our well-being and performance? These two issues are the subject of this short article. Interestingly, early research about resiliency is embedded in the studies of children prone to high risk of delinquency due to severe social problems and psychopathology. Indeed, in these early studies, such children were described as “invulnerable”, “stress-resistant” or simply “resilient”. The details surrounding these studies are beyond the scope of this short article but

54

zip beauty magazine issue 06

in essence they demonstrated that resilience evolved gradually and is considered generally a malleable trait (so-called state). Masten and Reed (2010) argue that resilience generally refers to a class of phenomena characterized by patterns of positive adaptation in the context of significant adversity or risk. Let me explain a little better these three salient points: 1. Patterns of positive adaptation: resilience is not a specific behaviour at a specific point in time but a way of being (behaviour), thinking (cognition) and feeling (emotions). In addition, it is directed towards constant homeostasis; meaning that the person engages actively to find balance that retains one’s sense of mastery over the environment. And mastery over the environment is an undisputable quality of well-being. Thus, resilience is not about being bold at all costs but keeping consciously healthy during times that seem very challenging and difficult.

mental resilience with dr vincent cassar

2. The role of context: Resilience is context specific; at least its origins. In other words, people are resilient in specific contexts. Some may evolve resiliency during periods of ill-health, poverty or severe business climates. Having said this, behaviours are generalizable through a process of conditional learning and eventually people expand their contexts where they can exhibit a sense of resiliency. 3. Significant adversity: Those instances where resiliency kicks in are instances of extreme difficulty; instances which challenge our resources in the midst of high demands. Hence people who have had it too good throughout their life are often less adaptable to extreme life conditions and hence less likely to develop high resilience! And what about resilience in the context of work? Entrepreneurs and business owners know all too well how often they have had to take very difficult decisions in view of adverse business situations. They also know all too well the accompanying negative feeling of such experiences stretching their human thresholds to the extreme limits! These are occasions which reveal the degree of internal resiliency and the need to be resilient.

56

zip beauty magazine issue 06

Sutcliffe and Vogus (2007), two authors writing on resilience at work, define it as “the maintenance of positive adjustment under challenging conditions”. According to them, resilience is

and changing in transaction with specific circumstances and challenges. Finally, it is important to state that the little research there is on resilience at work, indicates that resilience

Hence people who have had it too good throughout their life are often less adaptable to extreme life conditions and hence less likely to develop high resilience!

inferred from two judgments: (1) an entity is “doing OK” BUT also (2) that an entity has faced circumstances that threaten its survival. Real entrepreneurs and business leaders are known to be endowed with a high potential for being resilient compared to the general population and this evolves in a pattern of behaviours described as being resilient, quite observable when the going gets tough; really a too-often familiar situation in successful businesses. In addition, in the context of business, resilience is not a discrete mechanism: it is not as if it is ‘off’ at one moment in time and ‘on’ at another but it is relative, emerging,

demonstrated in one situation may not necessarily be sustained over time or transferred to other circumstances or challenges although experience helps adapting to new circumstances. This means that business leaders are humans like anybody else with perhaps higher demand thresholds; but these thresholds, once reached, can strain the specific individuals,

mental resilience with dr vincent cassar

damaging severely well-being and performance. Hence, being resilient is not enough but it requires people to keep healthy, focused and in shape both physically and psychologically!

The lesson we learn from these studies is primarily that resilience in entrepreneurial activities, business life, work contexts and other non-work scenarios, simply cannot nott be accompanied by other positive

states and experiences like support, self-efficacy, and need for achievement. And, why not, when success visits and we feel so positive, it is worth celebrating it with our significant others,

employees, colleagues and friends! It is these instances that help us re-generate our power to act in a resilient fashion in the future‌ when the going gets tough again. z

Hence, being resilient is not enough but it requires people to keep healthy, focused and in shape both physically and psychologically!

Art & Beauty the brain child of sharon scerri, art ‘n’ chic was launched about one year ago with the sole purpose of bringing together people from all walks of life and helping them to develop and express their artistic talents.

T

hrough her work with different kinds of people Sharon, a graduate in marketing, realised that different persons from various backgrounds have hidden talents but lack a place where to develop their gifts. It is not rare to find that artistic people do not always recognise the talents they possess. One member of the group is Dr Dorothy Zammit, a medical doctor, who was introduced to make-up artistry through a basic make-up course. In her own words: “I decided to follow this with the intention of learning some basic tips for every day use. I enjoyed it and went on to the Advanced course which led

60

to the pre-professional courses. I discovered that I had a natural aptitude with brushes and make-up. Together with the other course students and photographers, I found it exhilarating to create something new and artistic with make-up. Session after session we improved our skills and the results were evident in the final photos. This led to my involving myself in various shows and fashion shoots.” Through her hobby she met different people with a variety of ideas and talents. The seeds of friendship blossomed and a ‘family’ of creative persons came into being and hence the setting up of Art ‘n’ Chic.

Hairdressers, photographers, makers of props and models, all put their heads together to organise events which were not only visually beautiful but also of a professional standard. Art ‘n’ Chic was promoted as a group of persons with the aim of working in the world of beauty and fashion. But not only. Sharon Scerri’s brain child is constantly tackling new challenges in all that is artistic. At the same time its members keep growing together in character and talent. Each individual person is finding his particular niche and his/her individual way to help the rest. The results are seen in all that is Art ‘n’ Chic and what it produces and organises. Indeed Art ‘n’ Chic has left its mark upon various modelling shows and fashion shoots. More and

more are joining the group and its activities. This is because the commitment shown by members of the group to what they are doing has been appreciated. The next objective of Art ‘n’ Chic is to present the group as a whole package of creativity to showcase creators, photographers, model agencies, entrepreneurs and the media. Art ‘n’ Chic is working to produce events which are different, and original whilst at the same time reflecting the group’s aims. Art ‘n’ Chic wants to stand out from the rest. z

ong hair is in this season. It brings with it style and softness and therefore feminity. If you cannot manage to grow your own hair fast enough then use extensions of which there are several types on the market. There are naturally wavy 100% real hair extensions now in Malta which can make the wearer look like a screen siren. The present day glamour although inspired by the Fifties has a modern edge. These extensions are of better quality than the normal straight extensions which used to be available. Not only is the quality better but most Maltese have wavy hair therefore these extensions are better suited. I have some available at Village Gossip. Of course many would prefer to stick to their short hair styles but for the colder winter days, long hair is the thing and long fringes are in too. On the catwalks the models wore a long central parting as opposed to a side one. I wish to emphasise how important it is not be allow your hair to be blow dried dead straight. Many local girls seem to like it that way but on the whole it is not suited to the features of the Mediterranean face. Blow dry it with curls. Let them cool with big

64

rollers on then when removed the hair has a nice loose wave, a lift. Volume should be concentrated on the side and back. The top area should be flat and with a central parting. Hair Colouring Dip Dyes are the ‘in thing’ for 2013. This is a combination of two colours which contrast. Start off with a dark shade on top until mid length then go to a lighter shade from mid length to the ends. It might sound a trifle too edgy for some but if the right depth and tones of colours are chosen than even a sophisticated woman can opt for this style. If the right consultation is carried out with the hairstylist for the colour tones and the style mentioned above I'm sure girls will feel much better after this change than reading the whole three volumes of 50 Shades of Gray. This season enjoy carefree, effortless glamour and you’ll be right on trend.

he Mercedes-Benz Malta Fashion Week has become a seven day festa celebrating Malta’s fashion scene – the style, the glamour, the people and the industry. As we all know it is the brainchild of Adrian J. Mizzi who has been organising The Malta Fashion Awards for more than a decade. During this time The Awards have become a catalyst for an industry that has developed and evolved and now celebrates this success during the Malta Fashion Week.

This year evagarden make-up sponsored the Mercedes-Benz Malta Fashion Week and the Trussardi Jeans Malta Fashion Awards. The evagarden make-up team took up the challenge of applying make-up backstage on the models for most of the shows. This experience gave them the opportunity to work for top designers in Malta as well as foreign ones, throughout Fashion Week and on the night of the awards. To mention but a few of shows: Charles and Ron, Pronovias – Bridal Wear,

the Maltese and Russian designer show and the Periodic Costume show. Despite the hustle and bustle behind the scenes, all the make-up artists worked exceptionally well and still delivered under pressure. Without the final make-up touches the whole event would not have been as glamorous as it turned out to be. During the opening party evagarden make-up gave away 50 exclusive goodie bags to the lucky winners of a competition which was launched during the event. The happy receivers were nearly falling

over with excitement and some were trying on the lipstick then and there as, tethering on fierce heels, they chatted about their plans for a new makeover thanks to the bounty of evagarden. On the night of the Fashion Awards the evagarden promo girls went around with lipstick tags and photos were taken at the evagarden stand and later uploaded on facebook. It was all very hectic but most enjoyable and inevitably – exceedingly glamorous! z

A

n old saying goes that we learn something new every day. How much of what we learn is useful and interesting is another matter, and choosing what we learn can be the difference between enjoying the experience or not. What if you could follow a short course on an interesting subject where you get to ask an expert as many questions as you like? What if you could share this experience with other people like you over the space of a few hours? What if you didn't need previous qualifications to participate?

These are the principles established by "Plus Foundation: A new way of learning" when creating their first set of courses. A conventional classroom environment can sometimes be too formal for exploring and learning about some subjects. For example, as a parent you might want to find out how to best help your child with their homework and discover new ways of making learning fun for them. Having an expert at hand to let you know what the best advice is and listening to the experiences of others is a great way to enjoy learning about something new. Bags of style

bags are everywhere women are always purchasing bags - to match a dress, a pair of shoes, evening bags, office bags, designer bags; but what they really crave is a bag which is different to the ones everyone else is wearing.

aniela Priehyba Camilleri is a freelance bag designer and designs and makes bags under the label By Dali. She is just 33 years old and although her passion for fashion started in early childhood her fascination in the art of handbag design emerged just a few years ago. She is busy slowly building up a successful business through her creativity. Each bag she creates is unique. “They are a self-expression of inspiration derived from Nature

and Art,”” she says. They are characterized by a creative blend of quality fabrics and trimmings. The designs vary in shape, style and size and are essentially romantic, elegant, chic, retro or vintage. These bags are made for different types of personalities and occasions. “They reflect a part of me in terms of personality and character."" Daniela also accepts commissions and produces custom-made designs on clients’ requests. And of course these reflect the personality of the wearer. “According to my philosophy a handbag should represent a woman

and when I am making a custom-made bag that is what I try to achieve,”” she explains. Her favourite designer is Coco Chanel who had very humble beginnings but became a symbol of traditional elegance. “She introduced one novel and controversial fashion idea after another,” Daniela remarks in admiration of this fashion icon.

Daniela’s most rewarding experience? “I was invited to show the bags I had designed for Autumn/ Winter 2012 on the catwalk at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week this year and I was one of the new designers who was nominated for the Trussardi Jeans Malta Fashion Awards 2012. It is very flattering to have been invited to showcase my creations and be recognized as a fashion accessory designer at an event of such magnitude.” z
