s I begin to compose this message to you for our magazine, I am struck by how fast time flies. It seems like only yesterday that I was preparing the introduction for the previous edition. Looking back at the last few months, I am proud to observe that Hilton Malta has had a truly memorable 2017, not only for the very busy summer season that we enjoyed, but also as a result of the starring role that Malta played on the international stage this year. Malta was privileged to hold the Presidency of the Council of the European Union for the first six months of the year. Our hotel also shared the unprecedented level of activity that this created within the country, as it was the temporary home for many VIPs and dignitaries attending meetings and events hosted by Malta during this period. We provided meeting and social spaces for the European People’s Party conference in March, and again for the EU Tourism Ministers’ Conference in May, and I am delighted to report that on both occasions, the hotel and our team members lavished on these visitors the warm and generous hospitality for which Malta is renowned. No sooner had the hectic summer months drawn to a close, than the Hilton Malta opened its doors to the prestigious Our Ocean conference, which attracted VIPs from all over the world. We hosted royalty, world leaders past and present, and other celebrities as they came together to discuss this most important and vital element of our planet’s environment. The feedback that we received from organisers and participants alike was very gratifying indeed, and it is hugely satisfying to know that we showcased Malta, and the hospitality of the Hilton brand, so successfully over the duration of this conference. If 2017 was a spectacularly exciting year, 2018 promises to be no less interesting, particularly with Valletta boasting the title of European Capital of Culture for the year. Malta, and the hotel, will be the destination for event organisers and culture lovers alike, as they flock to the Island to discover or revisit our intriguing capital city with its countless corners steeped in history, alongside its present-day vibrancy. Our Concierge team is looking forward to sharing updates on exciting events happening in Valletta and all over Malta and Gozo in the coming months.

Chopard Happy Hearts Happy diamonds and hearts: when two House signature elements meet, the result is bound to be delightfully harmonious. The heart is a key symbol of Chopard and it has naturally found its place within the Happy Diamonds collection to become a full-fledged line of its own: Happy Hearts. The dainty jewellery produced in either white or rose gold, is adorned with wide hearts, either cut-out or set with brightly coloured stones mingled with tiny hearts enclosed with moving diamonds. The suppleness of these creations combined with the mobility of the diamonds result in a singularly chic and exquisitely feminine line.

Karen Millen - Knitwear Our distinctive collection captures the essence of the confident woman, living her life with energy, sass and passion. With places to go, people to see and plans to make, the collection creates outfit solutions for her life’s every moment, from immaculate tailoring to the elusive ‘24-hour’ dress and high-octane eveningwear, designed to dazzle. Bold, glamorous and considered, the collection packs a punch, with silhouette-loving shapes, vivacious prints and sumptuous fabrics across two key themes: Come Undone and Feminine Grandeur.

Logomania is back. And bolder than ever! The world’s most beautiful brands are once-again using their coveted logotypes as core-design elements, in stark move away from the minimalism of recent years. Bold in design yet elegant to the core, this trend is clearly reflected in the latest offerings by Dolce&Gabbana, Burberry, Moncler and DSQUARED2 which are yours to discover at SARTO, Malta’s only source for luxury fashion.

Combining Zaha Hadid’s architectural genius and Bulgari’s jewellery-making prowess, B.zero 1 Design Legend jewels honour the shared vision of the two design legends. The new Design Legend ring and pendent collection recall the grandeur of Rome’s Colosseum in their design. Zaha Hadid reinterpreted the original B.zero 1 into a fusion of golds and bold design. The end result is the perfect combination of classic, revolutionary and timeless.

Luminor Due A new case, faithfully inspired by the lines of the classic luminor of the 1950s but subtly redesigned, makes its entrance into the history of officine Panerai. The new luminor due collection is a new chapter in the history of Panerai. It is the result of a challenge successfully overcome by the designers and engineers of the Panerai Manufacture: to offer enthusiasts a new interpretation of the brand’s iconic watch, the Luminor, which is absolutely faithful to the original aesthetic but with more contemporary functionality, achieved by a reduction in the thickness of the case compared to the historic one which is up to 40% for some models.

Where are you originally from and where are you based now? "I was born in London but I moved around a lot. I first came to Byron Shire, Australia in 1999 where I am still based". What first got you interested in street writing and the art scene? "Growing up in an urban environment like London was when I became engaged with street art and graffiti but I didn’t put my own mark on the walls till much later. British culture has informed my satirical wit which plays a big part in the work I do". Is there any particular event in your life that has left an impression on or influenced your art style? "The death of my dog led me to focus on animals as a subject matter and use them as a vehicle to bear witness to human behaviour". Do you have a signature image that you are well known for? "Yes, my Bull Terrier black and white stencils".

Have you been influenced by any other artists? "Many people have influenced me along the way, but mostly it’s been my friends and contemporaries".

2017 - New York ( Pop Up - Solo Show) - Portugal (Art Catto - Exhibition) 2016 - Malta (Lily Agius Gallery - Solo Show)

How did art affect your life growing up? "I think it gave a visual dimension to the hip-hop youth subculture that exploded in my teens, one where rebellion had a creative outlet and vandalism became constructive, where public space was reclaimed by the disenfranchised and a healthy antiestablishment movement was in some given legitimacy".

2015 - Brisbane (Redsea Gallery - 2 Man Show) - London (Graffik Gallery Solo Show) - Los Angeles (Lab Art - Brit Week Group Show) 2014 - Singapore (Redsea Gallery Affordable Arts Fair) - Brisbane (Redsea Gallery Group Show) - Los Angeles (Lab Art - Brit Week Group Show) - Brisbane (Redsea Gallery - Solo Show)

Do you have any formal training and where have you exhibited? "I went to Central Saint Martin’s School of Art in London, which was my first formal training. I work with galleries around the world as well as organising pop-up galleries locally in Byron Bay. Here are some recent ventures:

2012 - Sydney (Upraw Art - Pop Up Gallery) - London (Graffik Gallery - Group Show) What medium do you work in? "I work with spray paint and stencils; especially for street work, but my primary practice is oil and acrylic paintings on canvas". When did you paint your first mural / large-scale piece, and where? "I keep my street work local to Byron Bay and generally don’t do large-scale pieces. I prefer to find a door way or electrical box in a discreet place - something that sits well in the space and is framed but within the surface area". Have you used your art to raise awareness or funds for a cause? "I have teamed up with various animal charities including Australia Zoo Hospital, Let Elephants be Elephants in Singapore, animal shelters in London and Portugal".

“ The death of my dog led me to focus on animals as a subject matter and use them as a vehicle to bear witness to human behaviour ” What are you most passionate about? "My kids, family, animals, my work, and coexistence, nature".

been my most successful to date but the one I am most excited about is the pop up exhibition I have just staged in New York last October". Why do you think street art is important? "I think street art levels the playing field. Its unrestricted communication in public spaces, it's not for profit. Just free expression giving a voice to artists who might otherwise go unnoticed.

H

ilton Malta proudly hosted this year’s edition of Our Ocean, a high profile international conference hosted by the European Union on the 5th and 6th October 2017. Now in its fourth edition, Our Ocean brings together ocean leaders worldwide to commit to change. Oceans cover 71% of our planet, and it is known that humankind relies on these waters for food, air and climate conditions. Human activity has impacted these oceans dramatically over the years and today we face serious issues in areas concerned with marine pollution, protected areas, security, sustainable blue economy, fisheries, and climate change amongst others.

The success of this year’s conference proved unprecedented, resulting in 437 tangible and measurable commitments, 2.5 million square kilometers of additional Marine Protected Areas and €7.2 billion in financial pledges. For this particular event, Hilton Malta welcomed over 700 participants from over 60 countries, including over 50 Heads of State, or Government Officials and Ministers. Here are a couple of highlights from this year’s event.

As part of its ongoing efforts towards its community, Hilton Malta supported this cause throughout the month of October by launching its own Pink October initiative. Various activities and incentives were planned across the course of three weeks, including serving a number of specialised items that contributed towards raise funds for this worthy cause. These included pink cappuccinos served with a pink macaroon, pink muffins and pink cocktails at the Quaterdeck Bar. directly in the hospitality sector in Malta before this point, there was a steep learning curve ahead in order for me to understand all the different functions and roles involved, however the vast amount of team member events and initiatives allowed me to discover everything I needed to know in a relatively short amount of time. My first day at the office coincided with the Team Member Forum and Hilton Awards for Excellence that are hosted every quarter. During the awards ceremonies, various team members were acknowledged for their outstanding contribution in various areas of the business, whereas long service team members where thanked for their contribution. The Team Member Forum is an opportunity for senior leadership team to share important property milestones and achievements in an interactive and fun way.

M

y name is Wendy Raywood. I have recently joined Hilton Malta as Training and Development Manager. I’ve been working with Hilton for the last four months but the amount of initiatives, projects that I’ve experienced so far makes it feel like I’ve been here here for so much longer than that. I’ve been working in Learning and Development for just under 20 years now. I’m originally from Lancashire, England and I relocated with my husband and two children 10 years ago. My professional journey started from an administrative background in the public sector in the UK, which developed into a managerial role. My role led me to the Human Resources team and this is where I found my passion for training others. My career developed into a strategic learning and development role within the Public Sector and later the private sector here in Malta. Among other qualifications, I hold a BSc in Human Resources Management and a Post

Graduate Certificate in Executive Coaching & Mentoring. I qualified as an Executive Coach a few years ago and I have been actively coaching both senior and developing executives in various organisations in Malta to support them to attain their professional and personal goals. I originally supported Hilton Malta as an external trainer and coach early in 2017 but it didn’t take long to realise that the culture and spirit within the property was something that I wanted to be a part of, and I instinctively felt that I could really contribute to this already extraordinary organisation. My first challenge was to immerse myself in brand-related training in order for me to deliver orientation to all new team members. I truly enjoy the ability to meet all new colleagues so they can connect to our brand and feel supported in their early days at Hilton Malta. Not having worked

A few days later the HR team organised ‘Team Member Appreciation Week’. This included a whole week of activities such as a BBQ at Ġnejna bay, as well as various team-building games that were organised in theme with our Blue Energy culture. This action packed week provided a very real insight into how Hilton Malta values its team members and gave me first-hand experience of the work our HR team and Blue Energy Committee undertake. Since then a number of additional team member recognition weeks have taken place for our “Heroes of Housekeeping” and more recently our “Front Office Champions” with other departments already having had theirs, and others still to come before year end. We’ve also held “Thrive Week” which is a spearheading initiative from Hilton to encourage all our Team Members to consider their well being in relation to Body, Mind and Spirit. A full week of activities took place including medical testing, massages, educational information sessions, and drink water campaigns amongst others. The more recent highlight was Heritage week, where the local Malta culture was celebrated throughout the Heart of House with a number of cultural activities for all team members during ››

BADGER KARTING

My plans for the rest of this year and 2018 are very clear. I’ll be continuing to manage our brand-standard and Safety and Security training and I’ll be launching a full range of leadership programmes to support the whole extended leadership team which includes our developing and existing first line supervisors, middle managers and heads of departments. We will continue to ‘Thrive’ and embed well-being initiatives into all our training and HR projects. I intend to create a real ‘buzz’ around coaching and mentoring in the coming months after having already held a oneday workshop for our Heads of Departments.

their break time. In addition a cultural training tour around Malta was held for expatriate team members. Just this month we’ve seen activities throughout the property for Inspire Charity Team build event, Pink October, a blood donation drive, participation in a charity triathlon, a social gocarting event, partnership with secondary schools for students studying hospitality, partnership with the Prince’s Trust for the employment of youths from disadvantaged backgrounds, and the much awaited full day End of Summer thank you party for all team members and their families. Despite a relatively short time I have had the opportunity to travel to Rome to attend a training programme delivered by colleagues from our regional office for Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA), and more recently in Munich where I attended the EMEA 2017 HR Conference. Both trips have provided valuable connections with my HR and Learning and Development colleagues from our region to share best practice and identify ways we can collaborate more.

With around 700 team members it’s clear that the HR team and myself can only achieve so much. We’ll be working closely with our network of internal ‘Team Coaches’ to ensure that the next few months will be full of more great plans for our team members and guests.

FRONT OFFICE APPRECIATION WEEK

My jam packed four months has given me a glimpse of what it’s like to work for such a great brand like Hilton… fast paced, dynamic, people focus and fun. I look forward to so much more I still need to experience!

harismatic by nature, and definitely easy on the eye, Mark is a thirty-something ambitious professional who has come a long way. “After finishing secondary school I wasn’t really sure what I wanted to do next,” he recalls. “I took on a summer job at Hilton Malta as a pool boy and was immediately drawn to the industry. My girlfriend at the time, (who coincidentally is my wife today!), convinced me to enrol at the Institute of Tourism Services (ITS) to progress with my studies, and after graduating in Accommodation Operations got my first job in a five-star hotel and have never looked back,” he notes with a smile. He explains how he worked his way up from front desk to Sales Coordinator, and was eventually promoted to Sales Manager within the MICE department. “After about six years into the job I was offered the unique opportunity to relocate to Cannes to work in the role of Sales Manager handling various European markets including Italy, the UK, and Benelux. It was an offer I absolutely couldn’t refuse.” Mark fondly recalls how his Cannes experience was a love at first sight sort of affair. “I experienced the true meaning of luxury accommodation, it was mind-blowing. This experience also allowed me to look at the market from a completely different perspective and made me become much more rate and revenue driven.” Mark recalls how after two years he decided to come back to Malta for personal reasons and was offered a job by a leading catering company as Senior Sales Manager. “It was a little scary at first because this was the first time I had tried to sell anything apart from rooms, but I’m always up for a challenge and thought it might be a good idea to try something different. This role evolved and I was eventually promoted to Assistant Director of Sales for the same catering company, as well as the cluster of hotels it operated.”

He explains how earlier on this year he was approached by Hilton Malta, and following a series of interviews he was offered the role of Director of Sales. Fast-forward a couple of months and here we are today. For someone who’s been so involved in the hotel industry for so long, I'm curious to know what he thinks about its evolution. “Everything’s changed dramatically in a relatively short amount of time,” he notes. “Today running a hotel entails large-scale business models, everything’s become digital and instant and guest expectations have soared though the roof. Nevertheless I also think that it’s an exciting time to be operating in, because we’ve never been so in touch with the guest – and offering a professional service with a professional touch is ultimately what we’re all about.” So what does the Hilton guest want? “Apart from the loyal Hilton guest who benefits from the Hilton Honors scheme, there is no specific Hilton guest. There’s the corporate traveller, the adventurer, the lovers, travellers who enjoy the views, others that are all about the service,

and so on and so forth. Being an industry leader and bearing the Hilton name with pride means that you need to satisfy and exceed expectations, and that’s the beauty of the job really,” he confidently notes. So what might it be like working in your team? “I like to lead by example,” he immediately replies. “I’ve always believed in getting my hands dirty to get the job done. I’m also a firm believer in personal contact, I’ll always choose calling someone or setting up a meeting rather than sending an email most of the time, simple because it feels more real. Having come from a number of other hotels I can strongly assert that I’m at the number one hotel now, but being privileged with a strong brand doesn’t mean that we can ever rest on our laurels, it’s a fast world out there,” he chuckles. Sounds just about right, what about your favourite parts of the job? “I’m a very sociable person so meeting new people and forming

relationships comes natural to me. Apart from that I enjoy travelling, problem solving, and of course coming to work every morning in such a high calibre property – the hotel looks fantastic and enjoys an exceptional location, she’s a proper beauty,” he smiles. “Apart from that, Hilton’s reputation precedes it both on a local and international level, working here is proving a dream come true,” he fondly remarks. On a more personal note, who is Mark Vella when he’s not wearing the Hilton badge? “I’m all about family, friends, food and football,” he laughs. “I play twice a week with a group of friends in an amateur league, and when I'm not doing that you’ll probably always find me on a beach (or a good restaurant for that matter). I’m married to Raffaella, my childhood sweetheart and we’ve got a three-year-old daughter called Kate, who’s the most recent love of my life. Apart from that I’m a lover of chivalry, classic cars, and designer sunglasses – we all have our vices,” he jokingly concludes.

taying at the Hilton always comes with that distinctive signature vibe. Some might say it’s all about the views or the property itself, others might contest that it’s all about the food, but most would agree that it’s all about the way you’re treated. Enjoying your stay at the Hilton isn't just about renting a room; it’s about immersing yourself in beautiful surroundings and treating yourself to a little Hilton magic. That’s where the Front Office team comes into play to ensure that your Hilton experience starts off right and sets the tone for the fantastic times ahead. I first meet up with Tito Di Benedetto, Hilton Malta’s Front Office Manager. “My family ran a tour operator company while I was growing up and I helped out from time to time. Ever since I can remember I was always fascinated by the hotel industry,” he explains. After completing his studies he carried out a six-month internship at a five star hotel in his hometown of Catania and immediately knew that this was the career for him. “I’ve been working in hospitality for over ten years, eight of which

have been in Hilton properties in Venice, London, and now Malta,” he details. Next to introduce himself was Tito’s right-hand man, Simone Gargiulo, Hilton Malta’s Deputy Front Office Manager. Simone has been working in hospitality for the past 8 years and has held various roles in a number of five-star hotels in Europe and the Middle East before choosing to relocate to Malta. “After completing my Masters in Business Management I felt lost, as most graduates do. I happened to meet the Front Office Manager of Hilton Molino Stucky by chance and he eventually offered me a job – as they say, the rest is history,” he smiles. Next I have the pleasure of meeting Aline Heinzelmann, Hilton Malta’s Assistant Front Office Manager and most definitely a little lady with a big personality. Currently the hotel’s youngest manager, Aline explains how she relocated to Malta earlier on this year, but her journey with Hilton began a while back in 2013. Taking on an internship at Hilton Florida Fort Lauderdale, Aline fell in love with the industry and pursued her career both in the States as well as in Germany before taking on her current role. “My experience so far has been amazing and I’m

so thankful to the rest of the team for having believed in me. I look forward to many great things to come at Hilton Malta,” she notes. The Team explain how their role extends itself much further than the reception desk. “Our team is responsible for front office telephone operators, our concierge and porters, the executive lounge floor, as well as handling guest feedback both in person as well as online, it’s a round-the-clock job that requires determination and ambition, but we wouldn’t have it any other way,” Tito jokes. It definitely sounds like a commitment, so what makes it worth it’s while? Simone is quick to reply. “Every day is different and that’s definitely the best part, our job can never be boring because no two days are ever the same. Every Hilton guest brings forward a unique set of beliefs and expectations and it’s up to us to ensure that he or she receives the service they expect.” “I also particularly like interacting with guests,” Aline mentions. “Over the years I’ve realised that Hilton guests value the personal touch and it is our responsibility to ensure that they receive it. Sometimes it requires taking a couple of extra steps from our end, but seeing a satisfied guest is ultimately the thing we pride ourselves on the most.” And indeed, guest interaction seemed to ignite a spark in all three, as they explain why this is so important and close at heart. “Guests are what ››

“ Our team is responsible for front office telephone operators, our concierge and porters, the executive lounge floor, as well as handling guest feedback both in person as well as online, it’s a round-the-clock job that requires determination and ambition, but we wouldn’t have it any other way. ” “I am extremely proud to be working for Hilton,” Aline mentions. “From a professional perspective, there are a number of incentives that include training, business trips and of course, the most obvious; there’s a Hilton hotel practically anywhere you go around the world. Apart from that I love how respected and valued I feel here, Hilton Malta really cares about its team members and this has always been really important to me.” In conclusion, what would your favourite thing about the hotel be? “Definitely the view!” they all reply laughing.

makes our job worth its while,” explains Tito. “Whenever I receive guest feedback it always makes me feel as though my career is worth its while. Of course, it’s crucial for us to be on top of everything whilst making sure that the guest is always given top priority in any case – I simply love to see happy guests, ultimately it’s all that matters!” And how is this achieved? “I’ve always felt that the most important part of being part of a front desk team is being proactive rather than reactive. Knowing our guests its an essential part of what we do, in order for us to plan ahead and avoid any unnecessary surprises,” Simone replies. “Having said so, you’ve always got to be a great listener and be very quick at picking up what might be expected of you in order to make it right, it just makes the job a whole lot more interesting really.” What about challenges? I enquire. “Making everyone happy all the time is a challenge in itself,” mentions Aline. “However, it’s been a learning curve which I’ve thoroughly enjoyed from a management perspective. I think it’s very important to establish respect from a very early stage and keeping communication as simple and clear as possible in order to avoid any misunderstandings. Ultimately I like to think of any situation as a challenge which I am able to resolve in the most positive way possible, just the way it should be at the Hilton.” When asked about career development, all three were eager to share their experience with Hilton, and in fact their portfolio is a testament to this. Despite having transferred between properties, Tito, Simone and Aline have always found themselves returning to the Hilton brand – why? “I met my wife at the Hilton and we both work here now, we’ve travelled to various locations and always found a job together, I think that’s what makes the brand so unique to us,” shares Tito. “Hilton offered a career opportunity right as I was fresh out of university and this was a big eye-opener when setting my professional goals ahead,” notes Simone. "To work in this industry means that you’re passionate and committed, to work at Hilton means that you’re ready to go the extra mile to deliver a premium result and the job satisfaction that comes with that.”

he Blue Elephant restaurant forms part of an international Blue Elephant restaurant chain, established with the intention of "bringing the best of Thai cuisine to the world". This particular establishment has been impressing diners with innovative dishes and impeccable service since 1980.

The Hilton outlet displays all the grandeur of an imperial palace complete with riverside views. Rich with ornate woodcarvings, silk cushions and clusters of fresh orchids, the interior is identical to what you’d expect to find in some of Bangkok’s smartest establishments. The food is beautifully presented on a range of bespoke tableware that includes heavy ceramic dishes and intricately weaved bamboo containers. Brass cutlery adorns the lavish tableware and you are interestingly presented with a fork and a spoon. This follows traditional Thai dining etiquette that requires eating with a spoon, and only using the fork to push food onto it. More recently, the restaurant launched its Thai Fest Menu that’s hosted every Wednesday. The menu is varied and allows patrons to savour most of the restaurant’s finest fares at a fixed price of €45 per person including a half bottle of foreign wine and water. The setting is intimate and we seat ourselves on a table right by the koi pond and start off our evening by cheering with a glass of red wine that felt just right mid-week. We were first served with

an eclectic range of starters that included chicken satays, spring rolls, crispy prawn and sweet corn patties known as ‘Sarika’, as well as the most exquisite egg pastry dumplings stuffed with cream cheese and spring onions called ‘Thung Pu’. As for the main course, we were literally served a banquet of authentic Thai culinary delights. These included a selection of seafood curry, stir-fried chicken, Ban Chiang which loosely translates to beef stir-fry, Ped Makarm, which included marinated duck grilled and served on a bed of seaweed, and my personal favourite, the Massaman Lamb that’s a typical southern Thai lamb curry cooked to perfection in coconut milk and spices. Phad Thai, Thai asparagus and steamed jasmine rice accompanied this gastronomic feast. We rounded off the evening with a selection of homemade desserts, including a gorgeous selection of exotic fresh fruit – needless to say, we were convinced to return. If you’re a little bit like myself, making up your mind about what to eat from a delicious menu of the sort might prove slightly problematic. All

I must admit that I was completely blown away by the setup, the outstanding menu as well as the flawless service that displayed a perfect balance of friendliness and non-intrusiveness. Needless to say, I’ll be back.

Valletta2018 year unveils Teatru Manoel’s annual major opera: Mozart’s Don Giovanni. Directed by Jack Furness, with the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Philip Walsh, this new and daring production of the iconic masterpiece is the second of three operas by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Lorenzo Da Ponte that are being produced by Teatru Manoel. Malta’s lavish national theatre frames this definitive portrait of a rake, a young libertine whose racy exploits scandalise all who cross his path - until he meets one who cannot be swayed by charisma. In 2019, audiences can look forward to a third production in the series, 'Così fan tutte, ossia La scuola degli amanti.'

Good Friday and Easter are celebrated in Malta in a liturgical and ceremonially prominent manner. On Palm Sunday, one may assist to the liturgical rites that usher in Holy Week. On Thursday evening and Friday morning, churches have their paintings draped over in purple or black velvet. The Maltese folk turn out in their thousands to visit and pray in seven different churches as traditionally observed. On Good Friday, late afternoon, some 17 different towns and villages commemorate the Passion of the Christ by an organised and very solemn procession of statues. ›

In April 2018 the European Foundation for Support of Culture (EUFSC) in collaboration with the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra will be presenting the Malta International Music Festival 2018, being held as part of Valletta 2018 European Capital of Culture. Patrons will have the opportunity to attend a two weeks' intense and varied programme of events, marking this festival as one of the most important classical music festival. The Malta International Music Festival 2018 promotes classical music in various forms, from solo recitals, to chamber concerts and grand orchestral concerts featuring new talents, rising stars and very renowned and world acclaimed artists to a very broad audience, aiming at maintaining culture at the highest levels within our society.

Bellini’s opera Norma, the beautiful operatic masterpiece featuring a tragic love triangle in Roman-occupied Gaul over 2,000 years ago – and one of the most challenging roles ever written for a soprano - will be the highlight of the 12th edition of Gaulitana: A Festival of Music. Enrico Castiglione will return to direct this bel canto masterpiece, with costumes designed by Sonia Cammarata. Colin Attard will conduct the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra and the Gaulitanus Choir. Norma will be part of the OPERA+ Weekend, which shall bring to an end Gozo’s main classical music festival. › W W W .T E A T R U A U R O R A . C O M ‹

LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION! From Game of Thrones, to Troy, and back to Disney musicals, Malta has seen it all. Here’s a handy guide to Malta’s secret film locations.

FORT RICASOLI

POPEYE'S VILLAGE

Kalkara

Anchor bay, Mellieħa

Originally built to serve as a defence to the mouth of Valletta’s Grand Harbour, today Fort Ricasoli has been abandoned and today lies partly derelict and is mostly used for filming purposes. Featuring prominently in the production of several films including Julius Caesar, Gladiator, Troy, and popular TV series Agora, this film location has been consistently transformed and redesigned to recreate the ancient cities of Rome, Troy and Alexandria amongst others, with their unique bastions, ravines and corridors.

Sometimes referred to as Sweethaven Village, this group of quirky wooden buildings were built to act as a film set for Popeye, a 1980s live-action Disney musical starring the late Robin Williams. Apart from offering a mini tour of the film set, and the opportunity to walk through the pathways that snake along the colourful houses, today Popeye Village also doubles as a seaside resort during the summer, and a Christmas Village during December.

GOZO

VALLETTA

BLUE LAGOON

Various locations

Various locations

Comino

Despite its diminutive size, Gozo has seen its fair share of movie action along the past decades. The medieval hilltop citadel located at the heart of the capital of Rabat was featured in a documentary about the life of Lord Byron, whereas the secluded Mġarr ix-Xini featured more recently in Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s 2015 Hollywood movie By the Sea. The Azure Window in Dwejra, which has now sadly collapsed since, served as the majestic backdrop for Daenerys and Khal Drogo’s wedding in Season 1 of Game of Thrones amongst others.

Apart from being a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and inscribed as the European Capital of Culture for 2018, Valletta is Malta’s capital city built around the 16th century by the Knights of St. John.

Malta’s smallest island is known for its rural landscape, and crystalline waters, as well as for having served as an idyllic film location in a number of productions including Guy Ritchie’s 2002 romantic comedy Swept Away as well as Kevin Reynold’s adventure drama The Count of Monte Cristo that is film adaptation of the book that goes by the same name.

It’s long, straight roads, rich baroque architecture and traditional overhanging wooden balconies have acted as a backdrop to several international movie productions such as Steven Spielberg’s Munich, 1978’s Midnight Express inside the impressive Fort St Elmo, and more recently the highly anticipated action movie Assassin’s Creed.

OSS, the leader in men’s fashion, avidly supports an active lifestyle – a fact clearly translated by way of the style and fabrics used in its collections, be it business, casual or “athleisure”. It is little wonder that world-class racer Alex Thomson was chosen to represent the BOSS brand in the competitive and gruelling world of yachting.
