general information The Maltese archipelago, which consists of Malta, Gozo and Comino, is situated in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, with Malta 93km from Sicily and 290km from N.Africa. The Maltese Islands are only a few hours away from major European cities by air and regular ferry and catamaran service links several Italian and Sicilian ports to Valletta, Malta’s capital city. The official languages are Maltese and English. Banks are normally open between 8.30am to 1pm, from Monday to Friday and up to 12.00pm on Saturdays. Automated Teller Machines (ATM) and Exchange Bureau’s can be found all over the island. Electricity Supply is 230V - 50 Hz. Shopping Hours - All commercial establishments are generally open between 9am and 1pm and between 4pm and 7pm. Shops are normally closed on Sunday’s and Public Holidays. Restaurants & Cafes are usually open from 9am till 1am. Most bars and nightspots remain open till 4am. Night entertainment is at its best

Ramla Bay Ramla is Gozo's largest sandy bay and one of the most beautiful on the Maltese Islands. The beach here is of a deep, reddishgold hue. The bay is surrounded by countryside and nestles below steep copyright© 2010 mta terraced hills and the mythical Calypso's Cave. There are no hotels or tourist developments nearby, but the beach side has several snack bars and cafes. The beach has its own landmark - a white statue of the Virgin Mary.
All roads in Gozo lead to Rabat, also known as Victoria. The village’s Citadel is visible from almost all the Island, rising steeply above copyright© 2010 mta the surrounding countryside. The Citadel in Gozo owes its roots to the late medieval era, but the hill has been settled since Neolithic times. For centuries, the Citadel served as a sanctuary from attack by Barbary corsairs and Saracens. At several times during Gozo’s history, these raiders took its population into slavery.
Marsalforn Marsalforn, meaning bakery port, is Gozo's main seaside town. During the summer, it becomes a bustling, lively resort. Marsalforn is characterised by its harbour-side cafes and restaurants, many serving fresh fish.

Taking home a work of art There is nothing more exhilarating than watching a unique piece of art taking life before your very eyes. This experience is shared by the thousands of tourists and locals who flock to the Mdina Glass factory in Ta’Qali every year. There, visitors have the opportunity to watch local artisans create individual masterpieces from small coloured glass beads, with the crowdpulling technique being that of glass blowing. Although not as old as simpler methods like bead making or cutting and carving shapes from larger pieces of glass, glassblowing has been all the rage since the days of the Roman Empire. Watching glassblowers draw out iron, cobalt and other minerals to produce a deep green, blue and brown palette that reflects the hues of the island, is undoubtedly an experience not to be missed. At the end of your visit to Mdina Glass, you might even decide to take home some of the rich earth and azure colours characteristic of the Mediterranean, represented in a hand-blown unique piece of art from Malta!

Lapsi Feast - Village Festas, Pageantry and Processions , Music, Dance and Theatre (6th June) An activity which used to take place during the time when the Order of St. John was in Malta will take place again in Spinola Bay on the 6th. of June. The promenade and all the surrounding areas will be transformed into one

big traditional folkoristic village where there will be various stands displaying Maltese crafts including filigree, painting, statuaries, wool-work, lace as well as others with local products including goat cheese, capers, and honey. Maltese traditional food will be also served. The shore will also be lit by candlelight which will surely go on to add magic to the already enchanting festive atmosphere. Trania - Music, Dance and Theatre (6th June) The contemporary Maltese ethnic music group Trania is composed of three musicians coming from different musical backgrounds who got together to revive and promote contemporary and traditional Maltese ethnic and folk music by introducing rhythmic styles from the whole Mediterranean basin as well as new forms of European musical expression. On Wednesday 6th of June at 8pm, the band will play a selection of their music from the album along with other original tunes ‘live’ in the courtyard. Ghanafest - Malta Mediterranean Folk Music Festival (8th to 10th June) The Ghanafest is a three-day event focusing on Malta's traditional singing called Ghana pronounced "ana". The programme also features Mediterranean folk groups. The Ghanafest will host a series of workshops on traditional instruments and a special programme for children.
A wonderful event for the whole family, complemented by traditional Maltese food and the marvellous surroundings of the Argotti Botanical Gardens in Floriana, situated within walking distance from Valletta. L-Imnarja - One of the oldest feasts celebrated in Malta & Gozo commemorating two important Saints, St.Peter & St.Paul (29th June) This feast has somewhat moved away from the traditional village ‘festa' style and has developed a different type of merriment which is held in Buskett Garden on the eve of June 29 the day of the feast. The liturgical services are held in the Mdina Cathedral. During the late afternoon hours, numerous horse and donkey races are held in a country lane situated just below and at some distance from Mdina. The gardens that can be found in the Maltese Islands are numerous but relatively small. What they lack in size they make up for in historical and cultural content, which when pieced together, relate the happenings of their inhabitants from the early 15th century to present day. San Anton - Attard
Sa Maison - Valletta
The flagship of all the gardens is beyond any doubt San Anton Gardens in Attard, built by Grand Master Antoine de Paul in 1623.
Sa Maison gardens, which overlook the equally impressive Marsamxetto Harbour, was the work of Grandmaster de Paul (1636), but it was later (1853) revisited by the British Military who used its vantage position for defence purposes and left interesting evidence of their presence by sculpting various coats of arms in the rock face of the bastions.
Upper & Lower Barrakkas Other smaller gardens such as the two Barrakkas in Valletta offer breathtaking views of our Grand Harbour and the fortifications built by the Knights of Malta. Buskett Gardens – Rabat Buskett Gardens in Rabat grew out of a hunting lodge that was built in the mid 1500’s by Grandmaster La Vallette

If you’re after a bargain while shopping in Malta, then going to a Maltese market may very well provide you with some great ones! Markets are the heart of the Maltese week and a cultural tour of their own. Almost every town and village has its version. You’ll find in them a strange assortment of household goods, clothing, music and toys. In all villages except for Valletta, the markets are generally referred to as "Is-Suq". Valletta The market in Valletta is known as Il-Monti - reason being, the flea market in here was once situated in front of the Monte di Pietà (Mount of Piety) building, and the market kept it's name from there on. Merchants Street - Monday to Friday Marsaxlokk For local colour, nothing beats the Marsaxlokk fish market in the South. Here you’ll find wonderful and exotic but also very edible and tasty fish on display. An early start is recommended if you want to see the best of the catch. Victoria (Rabat) Gozo It-Tokk, is the charming, daily market in the main square of Victoria, Gozo at which you’ll find everything from fishing pots to beach towels. Bigilla (Spicy bean dip)
Gbejna (Goco Cheeselet)
Mediterranean recipes are known for their simplicity, and Bigilla is no different. This very popular bean dip recipe is generally made up of dried broad beans, olive oil, lemon, hot red pepper ,garlic , parsley, mint leaves and marjoram. Bigilla is often served as an appetizer with Maltese food or with Mediterranean finger food or you can opt to buy it from practically any super market or corner grocery store.
Gbejna (plural Gbejniet) is a round cheeselet, particularly associated with the island of Gozo, made from goat’s or sheep milk, salt and rennet,The fresh variety (friski) have a smooth texture and a milky flavour and are kept in their own whey. The peppered variety (tal-bzar) are covered in crushed black pepper and cured, after which they may be stored in oil or pickled in vinegar.
In the old days, street vendors used to roam the villages with their horse-drawn carts selling this bean dip. You can still see these vendors in a few villages.
Gbejna is is often added to pasta dishes or soup to enhance flavour, however many wine bars also include Gbejniet as part of some platters.
Pastizzi (CheeseCakes)

Pastizzi are savoury pastries usually having a filling either of ricotta or of mushy peas, and are called pastizzi tal-irkotta, "cheesecakes", or pastizzi tal-pizelli, "peacakes. The pastry is usually made up of filo pastry, although there is also a puff pastry version. They are sold in bars , cafeterias and by street vendors. A visit to Malta would not be complete until you’ve tried these.
Zeppi's Prickly Pear Liqueur is a traditional all time favorite Maltese drink made up of Prickly pear, Pomegranate, Fennel, Almond, Fig, Honey. It is a sweet, delicate drink that tastes very similar to the actual fruit and is usually enjoyed chilled, on ice or neat.
