rt was therefore not much of a discovery. It was not something he stumbled upon or which had

been impressed in him after a particular event. No, it was more a part of his natural development, like walking or talking was. THE MEDIUM FAVOURED Throughout his life, Joseph Casapinta has dedicated much of his time and effort to honing and perfecting this skill. What started out as sketches in pencil, quickly developed into other forms: Joseph has dabbled with ink, doing illustrations and graphic arts in the 80s and mastering this technique. He has now recently ventured into the world of acrylic, oils and watercolours. This latest journey is already in its eight year, as he continuously strives, and succeeds, to produce new work through experimentation. Joseph expresses his particular fondness for ink. “Ink has a certain versatility and boldness to it. It allows me to express myself in any way with it. Watercolour on the other hand, is a relatively new passion. If truth be told, it was love at first sight. Whether it is a coastal tower, a British pill-box by the sea, a quaint chapel or better yet, street scenes in Valletta or a festa in Balzan, Joseph shows off Malta’s colours in his paintings in their brightest light. You will be hard-pressed to see Malta more beautiful than in Joseph’s orange setting sun. THE MUSE When it comes to inspiration, Joseph is convinced that there is nothing better than to experience things en plein air. Once outside, the artist does not only get to paint what he sees but more importantly, what he feels. “The very moment you decide to step outside your studio, is the moment you’re faced with endless opportunities. You can express yourself better than you could ever hope for in a studio, with an inanimate photo staring back at you.” When outside the studio, the artist is faced with different challenges: the sun, the clouds, the wind and the rain to name just a few, a far cry from the comfort zone of the studio. “You’re at the mercy of it all but if you manage to make the most of it, you can capture beautiful moments on canvas. Modern Alvaro Castagnet and Joseph Zbukvic are artists whose work and techniques Joseph follows to this day, echoes of which are very evident in Joseph’s own paintings. “The passion for watercolours has induced in me a love for experimentation. Although I look to other artists for new styles and ways of painting, I also come up with some of my own. So far, the results have been pretty successful,” Joseph tells us with a humble shrug and a smile. The 1800s, with the rise of Impressionism would definitely have been a time to live in for Joseph. Originating from France but spreading quickly to the rest of the world, impressionist artists left the darkness of their studios and started painting en plein air, each one of them contributing to a new style of painting. “We owe these pioneers any pioneers who are brave enough to venture in new territory - so much. We seat ourselves on one of the comfortable couches as a waiter takes our order. I opt for a rosemary gin infusion, whereas my partner left it in the barman’s hands to mix up something special. Needless to say, it was absolutely delicious. As we watch Damien, the barman on duty at the Quarterdeck work on his alchemy, I find myself being transported into the past, to a time where glamour was the order of the day and the tinkling of champagne glasses and bold jazz tunes where precisely what nights out where all about. Patrons are invited to choose from a large selection of fine champagnes and innovative cocktails, or browse through the extensive International Wine List, all of which perfectly complement the delicious selection of platters, cheeses, and gourmet bar treats. Apart from the stunning atmosphere and stellar service, I cannot of course forget to mention George Curmi known as il-Puse and Godwin Lucas for their fantastic interpretation of classic and contemporary jazz singles ranging from Frank Sinatra to Barry White amongst others. Whether you’re keen on unwinding after a day at work with friends or colleagues, or spending some quality time with those who matter most, this venue comes with nothing but praise from my end. Don’t forget to order a cocktail; they’re really something else! And just because it’s the right season for it, we’ve tried this fantastic cocktail and thought we’d share. Bethlehem f ' Għajnsielem is an animated nativity village spread on 20,000sqm of land. It offers naturalistic reproduction of the environment of Bethlehem and the timeless story of Nativity every December at 'Ta Passi' fields in Għajnsielem. The ‘animated crib' promises to bring the timeless Christmas story to life as never before. The atmosphere will simply be unique... horses turn mills, villagers go about their jobs, shepherds inhabit caves, animals roam in enclosed spaces and a poor unknown couple tend their newly-born in a grotto. Attractions include the carpenter and blacksmith's dwellings, the bakery, a market selling natural fruits, fresh fish and vegetables, a tavern, a local crafts area and a barn. Each dwelling is inhabited and animated by whole families, to remind everyone that Christmas is a celebration of the family. The tavern offers local food and wine. A picnic area will offer the unique surroundings for a family outing on Sundays while oil lamps will be distributed for those who want to visit Bethlehem f'Għajnsielem by night. Fresh water will be flowing along these structures through a small stream with various water features. The main attraction is certainly the grotto, with baby Jesus in the caring hands of Mary assisted by Joseph with a donkey and a cow close by.

Jean began her career in makeup over 11 years ago. Working as a freelance artist she immediately focused on various fashion, beauty and corrective makeup for special occasions, weddings, TV, photo shoots and commercials. For the past 8 years she also held a managerial position for EVAGARDEN makeup with Biocare Company limited, where she is also responsible for any training, education and brand image. Jean has worked on many local and also international personalities, as well as models for various occasions. However she finds it more challenging and rewarding to work on personalities in show biz or media, to help them look their best whilst boosting their confidence.

Carina is a self-taught fashion stylist with over 20 years of experience in the industry. She is the owner and director of Malta’s leading modelling agency called Models M and has organised several fashion related events over the years. She also indulges in buying designer wear and is addicted to online shopping.

His professional ‘no cutting corners’ ethos stems from his fond passion for photography, whereas creativity and non-conventional reasoning generally afford his photos a distinct flavour. Matthew is known for his forward thinking as well as his scrupulous attention to self-improvement. This has allowed him to stand out from the rest and gain momentum throughout past years.

ften referred to as the Silent City, Mdina stands tall over 4,000 years later from when it was first estab-

lished. According to tradition, St Paul is said to have spent some time after being shipwrecked in Malta in 60 A.D. In addition, it Is rumoured that he actually resided inside a grotto known as ‘Fuori le Mura’, which translates to outside the city’s walls – a cavern today known as St Paul’s Grotto located in the adjacent village of Rabat. Mdina went on to be given several different names by its rulers, however I’ve always felt that the medieval name that best describes it is definitely ‘Citta Notabile’ – the city of nobles. Representing one of Europe’s finest examples of ancient walled cities, with its interesting mix of medieval and baroque architecture, it came as no surprised when the city was chosen to be featured as the fictional capital city of King’s Landing, in the vastly popular television series Game of Thrones. Historically, Mdina was just as influential, and was predominantly inhabited by Malta’s noble families, Mdina enjoyed an eclectic mix of descendants of the Sicilian,


Spanish and Norman overlords, who chose to live in Mdina from the 12th century onwards. Today, impressive palaces and elaborate homes line its narrow alleyways – which incidentally are curved in such a way so that the distance between one corner and the other is the flight of an arrow. When Malta was taken over by the Order of St John back in 1530, the residents ceremoniously handed over the keys to Grand Master L’Isle-Adam, but the Order preferred to settle in Birgu due to its strategic harbour area, and Mdina lost its status as the capital. During the Great Siege of 1565, Mdina served as a base for the Order’s cavalry. Today, Mdina is one of Malta’s most popular tourist attraction, and welcomes around 750,000 tourists into its walls every year. No cars other than resident and emergency vehicles, wedding cars and hearses are allowed into the city, which is partly why it is known as the Silent City. The city displays several museums and exhibitions, as well as private homes, restaurants and cafés, and is a definite must-see during your stay in Malta.
