New Saturday Gentle Yoga Class At Emerson Hospital Come discover why more Americans are going to yoga classes like never before, and why doctors are sending their patients to yoga classes. Did you know that research has shown a yoga practice to be more effective than physical therapy for lower back pain? That there was a 22 percent improvement in aerobic capacity, improving six out of seven measures of respiratory function, according to studies? That new studies show that it significantly improves bone strength in the spine and hips?

GENTLE YOGA at Emerson Hospital IS the perfect way for brand new students to explore the practice of yoga. It is also suitable for those with a tight body, stiffness, injury or in recovery from illness or surgery – or simply in need of some deep relaxation. This class covers all the basics so that your yoga experience is comfortable, beneficial, and therapeutic. Taught by an experienced yoga instructor with over 15 years experience teaching yoga, Laraine Lippincott’s Gentle Yoga class is one of

the most popular classes at the Emerson Wellness Center, and she was featured on WCVB’s Chronicle last fall. With clear and detailed instructions, you will build strength, flexibility, enhance immunity, calm the mind, and enliven and deepen the breath. She always offers modifications to every posture so there is no way that you can’t receive benefits. It’s all about YOU and custom-fitting the yoga to YOUR BODY. In the Gentle Yoga class, students will learn a variety of foundational postures with correct alignment: standing, seated, on all fours, and lying down. We focus on increasing full

There is a new class on Saturdays at 11:30 beginning November 18, so this is a great opportunity to get started. This new Gentle Yoga will begin on Saturday, November 18, 9:30 to 10:45. The session will run for six classes. (Please note that the on-line schedule erroneously lists the class as

beginning on November 11.) Classes are held at the beautiful yoga studio at the Emerson Wellness Center for Mind and Body, 310 Baker Road, Concord, MA (not at the hospital). Also note that because of the cumulative nature of the class, the instructor is not allowing dropins. You can register on-line by going to emersonwellness.org and plug in “Gentle Yoga”.

Donate Blood This Holiday Season The American Red Cross encourages people to share their good health this holiday season by donating blood for patients in need. Mike Healey’s son was born prematurely, weighing 3 pounds, and immediately needed blood. “I gave blood the next day and have done it 56 times since

then,” he said. Though Healey’s son spent his first 49 days of life in the neonatal intensive care unit, he has thrived and is now a healthy, 10-year-old little league baseball player. “I will never forget whoever selflessly gave blood for my son.” A decline in donations occurs from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day when donors are busy with holiday activities and

By giving blood or platelets, donors may give patients more time – and more holidays – with loved ones. Creating A “Spooktacular” Halloween With Flowers (NAPSA)-Whether you are playing host to a swarm of trickor-treaters or are looking for decorating ideas that reflect the colors of the seasons, you can do it with flowers. “Fall is such a great time to add flowers to your home’s decor,” said Jill Slater, flower designer for www. flowerpossibilities.com. “The rich colors and whimsical design options are not only great inspiration, but also create instant pizzazz.” Slater offers the following flower recipe for fall magic: Pirate Pumpkin Materials: • One 7-inch pumpkin (faux or real) • One brick floral foam • One pirate eye patch and hat • One steak knife for pirate’s mouth and sculpting • One large bunch (about 50 stems) bear grass • Two stems orange pincushion protea • Three stems green leucadendron • Two stems orange gerbera daisies • 10 greening pins or three pieces 27-gauge (12-inch long) straight wires • Floral clippers, floral food/ preservative • Knife and spoon for cutting and scooping out pumpkin • Black permanent marker Directions: 1. Soak the floral foam, for at least 30 minutes, in water that has been treated with flower food/preservative. 2. Cut and scoop out the

pumpkin. 3. With permanent marker, draw eye and nose of Pirate Pumpkin. 4. Insert the floral foam into the pumpkin. With steak knife, shape the foam coming out of the pumpkin into a cone/ Christmas tree shape. 5. Begin wrapping the bear grass around the foam, using the greening pins to hold the bear grass in place. (If using straight wire, cut the wire into 3-inch lengths; bend in half and use as bobby pins.) 6. Place and pin (use greening pins or straight wire) pirate patch and hat on pirate and begin inserting flowers, leucadendron to one side and protea and gerbera daisies on the other. 7. Finally, insert the steak knife in the mouth position. To learn more, visit the Web site at www.flowerpossibilities. com.

Pumpkin Pie Is Even More Pleasing When You Add Corn Syrup (NAPSA)-If pumpkin pie is an important part of your holiday meals, then you may be interested in ways to make this perennial favorite even better. With the right ingredients, you can achieve a richer, deeper flavor for the filling and serve your guests their own personal single serving. Pumpkin pie perfection requires striking a delicate balance between sweetness and spice. The unique flavor combination of sweet pureed pumpkin, cinnamon, ginger and cloves can be overpowered by too much sugar. To complement the pumpkin and spices and help achieve a deeper, more complex taste, use a combination of corn syrup and

sugar to add sweetness to your pumpkin pie. Dark corn syrup was an essential ingredient in homemade pumpkin pies 60, 80 and 100 years ago and remains an excellent ingredient choice. This new, improved recipe, Individual Classic Karo Pumpkin Pies, has a smooth but dense, and not overly-fluffy texture. It may well become your new pie tradition. After the main course, anyone for whom portion-control is paramount will appreciate this recipe for single-serve “pumpkin pie-lets.” Try flavoring real whipped cream with any of the following: vanilla, finely chopped crystallized ginger, cinnamon and freshly-grated nutmeg or ground cardamom and cinnamon to serve along the pies. Mix sugar, salt and spices in a bowl. Add eggs and beat slightly. Add remaining ingredients; blend well. Roll pastry on a lightly floured surface. Cut six circles of pastry about 6 to 12 inches in diameter. Note: if using a purchased refrigerated pie crust, roll each crust into an oval, about 16 x 13 inches. Cut 3 circles from each oval. Place each pastry circle in a 10-ounce custard cup. Fold top edge of pastry towards the inside; flute or crimp edges by pressing pastry against cup at even intervals. Place an equal amount of pumpkin filling (about 3⁄4 cup) into each prepared crust. Bake 50 to 60 minutes or until knife inserted in pie center comes out clean. Include an Eye Exam on Your Back-toSchool Checklist (NewsUSA) - Books, pencils, paper -- all common educational tools one would find on the back-to-school list. Good vision, perhaps one of the most important tools needed to be successful in school, is often left off the list. The American Optometric Association (AOA) encourages scheduling a comprehensive eye exam for your child before school starts. Why get your child’s vision checked? Good vision is a critical part of learning. Most experts believe that 80 percent of what a child learns is done through their eyes. Reading, computer usage and chalkboard work are all visual tasks students perform. A child’s eyes are always in use in the classroom. Therefore, when a child’s vision is not working properly, learning and class participation will suffer. When children have undetected vision problems, school can be a struggle. Signs that your child may be experiencing vision difficulties in the classroom include: * Trouble finishing written assignments

* Losing their place when reading * Holding reading material closer than normal * Having a short attention span when doing close work * Skipping words when reading * Turning or tilting their head to use one eye only * Rubbing their eyes * Frequently complaining of headaches * Consistently performing below potential The AOA recommends that a child receive a comprehensive eye exam at six months, three years, upon entering school, and every two years thereafter. While helpful, a school vision test or pediatrician’s screening is not a substitute for a thorough eye exam. An examination evaluates how well the eyes see. It also measures the eyes’ ability to work together, to focus properly and to move together in activities such as reading a page of print or following a ball. A visit to the optometrist could be one of the most important steps taken in helping your child make the most of his education. To learn more about children’s vision, or to find an optometrist in your area, visit www.aoa.org.
